A Mega Month In Store

As our cover story intro says, there’s so much going on in Qatar in October, it was hard to know where to start. And, I have to say, I absolutely love this month’s magazine.

For our main feature, we’ve concentrated on the Big Three – the F1, Geneva International Motor Show Qatar and Expo 2023. The fact that so many incredible international events are heading to our shores is a testament to the country’s growth and extraordinary ability in grabbing these wonderful opportunities with both hands and doing a great job. We’ve got loads to tell you. While we’re on the subject of the Grand Prix, I have to confess a little bias. I know it’s very likely that Max Verstappen will clinch the drivers’ championship at Lusail, but I’d dearly love to see a return to winning form for Lewis Hamilton, so I’ll definitely be rooting for the Brit. Who’s your favourite? Elsewhere, we’ve got details of another big name visit in the form of comedian Ahmed Ahmed. I saw him years ago in The Axis of Evil Comedy Tour and can tell you he’s a very funny man. So, if you get the chance to go see him, I’d highly recommend it. As usual, we’ve been eating our way around Doha and, with the arrival of the new season, we’ve extended the Dining Deals section as lots of the hotels and restaurants have new offers to tempt your taste buds – I was hungry just reading about them. And, in the Travel section, we go Leaf Peeping across the USA – oh to be where there are real seasons!

There’s plenty of news from the worlds of motoring, tech, fashion and entertainment as well as info on a new book that I’m particularly excited about in the Arts & Culture section. I really hope you enjoy reading this month's mag as much as I’ve enjoyed putting it together. See you at the racetrack?

GET YOUR GIGGLE ON!

Egyptian-American funnyman, Ahmed Ahmed, is a comic with a lot to say, particularly on his journey through life as a Middle Eastern comedian in the US.

Born in Egypt, Ahmed’s family headed Stateside when he was just a month old. He was raised in Riverside, California and moved to Hollywood at the age of 19 to try his hand as an actor and stand-up comic. He’s been making people laugh for almost 35 years with his sharp observations on race relations, Islamophobia and Arab and Egyptian culture.

In 2005 he formed The Axis of Evil Comedy Tour with the aim of wielding jokes as weapons and combatting post-9/11 prejudice in the United States. He also performed at Axis of Justice, a predominantly rock and heavy metal concert which fights for social justice.

He is the first Arab-American to star in his own stand-up comedy special, which aired on Showtime. He’s also made several TV appearances, including The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,

The Late Show with David Letterman and The View

And his film and television credits include Executive Decision, Swingers, Tracey Takes On..., Roseanne, JAG, Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn and MTV's Punk'd with Ashton Kutcher.

A regular at the famed Comedy Store in Hollywood, Ahmed tours all across the US and Europe. He was the winner of the first annual Richard Pryor Award for ethnic comedy at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland.

You can catch his very individual form of comedy at Qube at Radisson Blu Hotel, Doha as part of the Hollywood Pop-Up Comedy Club on October 20. Tickets are priced from QR100 for early bird general admission.

The organisers promise: “You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll definitely think twice about the world around you!” ✤

ARTISTS’ CALL OUT

Qatar-based artists have the chance to share their talents with the world on the D’reesha stage.

Qatar Foundation is inviting local creatives to join in its annual celebration of art and cultural exchange – the D’reesha Performing Arts Festival 2023 – which takes place from December 1 to 5 at Oxygen Park and Al Khater House in Education City.

It aims to showcase how culture connects nations and peoples, endures across generations, and unites humanity, through immersive performances, captivating costumes and shared culinary experiences. D’reesha performances will take place in both English and Arabic, and can feature either individuals or groups.

Since its first edition in 2021, D’reesha has become an annual highlight in Qatar’s cultural and community calendar, with around 15,000 people attending last year’s event.

“At this year’s inclusive celebration of cultural diversity and the performing arts on the D’reesha stage – where traditions, customs, and stories converge to celebrate the continuation of culture – we are excited to invite local creatives to be part of an extraordinary journey,” said Hend Al Thawadi, Engagement and Activation Lead, Qatar Foundation.

“The latest edition of the festival aims to highlight how cultures intertwine through performing arts to create a world of unity and understanding, encouraging us to reflect on the essence of the human experiences that define our world, who we are and what we share, regardless of our differences.

“D’reesha is a diverse platform where local creative talent is placed in the spotlight and we hope artists from across Qatar will take the opportunity to be part of this festival as it weaves the threads of our different cultures into a tapestry of unity and creativity."

The variety of shows and activities at D’reesha will feature something for people of all ages, from performances and storytelling sessions to social spaces, digital and audio activations, and elements that illustrate how discoveries and knowledge that emerged from the Arab world have influenced and connected with other cultures and societies around the globe.

The 2023 edition will include activations held in collaboration with university and school students from across Qatar, with the aim of empowering children and young people to express themselves through arts and creativity. The festival will also collaborate with key cultural organisations and individuals, including Qatar National Library, Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra and Dana Al Fardan. The opportunity to register as a D’reesha artist and performer is open until October 15.✤ GO:

MINIMALLY SPEAKING

Groundbreaking exhibition featuring the founders of minimalism to launch in Qatar.

This month Qatar Museums will open the largest museum exhibition outside of the United States — and the first in-depth presentation worldwide in nearly two decades — of the work of the closely linked American artists Dan Flavin (1933–1996) and Donald Judd (1928–1994). The exhibition will also be the first major presentation of the pair’s works in the MENA region.

The artists were considered two of the founders of minimalism, the widely influential art movement that broke free from traditional notions of painting and sculpture to focus on experiencing real space and materials. Flavin and Judd met in 1962 in New York, and quickly became central figures among a cohort of artists including Lee Bontecou, John Chamberlain, Yayoi Kusama, Sol Lewitt, Claes Oldenburg and Frank Stella, who were charting the new terrain between painting and sculpture.

Opening to the public on October 25 at QM Gallery Al Riwaq, the exhibition – Dan Flavin | Donald Judd: Doha – is organised by Qatar Museums in cooperation with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and features 34 works by Flavin and 25 by Judd.

It focuses on the artists’ shared engagement with material, colour and form. Spanning the 1960s through to the 1990s, the exhibition will highlight works from Qatar Museums’ collection, as well as important loans from other museums, private collections, the Dan Flavin Estate and the Judd Foundation.

“We are grateful to Michael Govan and our partners at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for working with us to bring this landmark exhibition to Qatar, where we are introducing the works of two icons of contemporary art, Dan Flavin and Donald Judd, not just to Qatar but to the entire region,” said Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums. “The lasting influence of these artists is not limited to the visual arts. Their work continues to be a touchstone in fields as diverse as architecture, design and furniture. It is especially fitting that this exhibition opens during Qatar Creates Week, when we celebrate all artistic disciplines and consider how art has the power to transcend boundaries.”

The exhibition is organised with works by both the artists installed in the three central galleries, demonstrating their intersecting concerns and practices. The galleries flanking this central section are dedicated to each artist separately. A robust public programme will accompany the exhibition, which runs until February 2024, and include in-person and digital panel conversations and lectures, special tours and more.

THE BALLERS ARE COMING

The countdown is on to the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027, which will be staged in Qatar for the first time.

In a special ceremony, which took place during halftime at the showpiece FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Final in Manila, Manual V Pangilinan the Chair of the Philippines Local Organising Committee passed the ball to FIBA President Hamane Niang.

It was then handed over to those responsible for overseeing what promises to be another memorable event in four years’ time – Mohammed Saad Almeghaiseeb, the President of the Qatar Basketball Federation and Sheikha Asma Al Thani, the Director of Marketing and Communications for the Qatar Olympic Committee. Qatar was announced as the next host earlier this year, with the tournament destined for success due to the many qualities identified in the bid. These included its compact geographical nature, unique flexibility with tournament venue scheduling to better serve the fans, as well as a strong emphasis on sustainability.

“We are very proud to receive the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 as the next hosts of this fantastic event", said Mohammed Almeghaiseeb. "We are grateful to our colleagues in FIBA and the Philippines for giving us the opportunity to see closely the organisational delivery of the World Cup. Hosting such a huge event

for one of the most popular sports in the world in is a huge honour for Qatar. It is another step in our sports vision, and we are committed to taking advantage of this opportunity to organise an exceptional experience for the teams and fans.”

One of the best-connected destinations in the world, Qatar's capital city, Doha, has direct flights from most of the potential participating countries, while the recently upgraded subway and public transportation network connects all venues, providing a top-class service for all visitors.

With all of the teams playing in the same city, fans can plan everything far in advance and enjoy a unique experience since all venues are within 30 minutes of each other.

Additionally, all venues to be used for FIBA's flagship men’s event are already constructed, while widely used green technologies will help in delivering the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 as a carbon-neutral event. ✤

THE BIG RACE

Qatar’s been waiting for Formula 1 for a very long time and, after the impromptu staging of the race in 2021 due to Covid restrictions at other venues, the country is more than ready to officially welcome the F1 Circus.

Racing 101

Practice and qualifying, in which grid positions are decided, take place on Friday, October 6. The Sprint Shootout and Sprint races – a much shorter distance over around 100km of the track – take place on Saturday, October 7. This is an exciting addition to the programme, which only began in 2021, and Qatar is one of only six venues to host Sprint racing this season. The big F1 race, running at 57 laps (303.8km) around the 5.418-kilometre Lusail International Circuit, takes place on Sunday, October 8.

Track Facts

● Lusail International Circuit – the home of motorsport in Qatar – was built in just under a year by 1,000 workers at a cost of USD58 million.

● The track launched in 2004 with the staging of the Qatar Motorcycle Grand Prix (MotoGP) – it now proudly hosts both bikes and cars.

● Thanks to the installation of a revolutionary 3,600-bulb lighting system in 2008, Lusail hosted the first night race in MotoGP history.

fact magazine 26
Max Verstappen in action

The turns to watch out for are 12, 13, 14 and 15 according to Lusail Circuit CEO Amro Al Hamad, himself a former endurance race driver. He told motorsport.com: “Turns 12, 13, 14 and 15 are very high-speed corners that require a lot of downforce. I don’t think there is any other track that has that feature of consecutive very high-speed corners. During the time I was racing and competing on the circuit, there was a little bit of lift off and I thought ‘Oh there’ll be some really high-speed corners and they’re really fun to go through’, but I found out that I was not fast enough through these corners. Seeing all the data from F1 teams, they go there really flat out and it’s really interesting to see.”

Kicking off at 8pm, the Formula 1 Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix 2023, will also be a night race, one of only five in the calendar.

● The current F1 track lap record of one minute 23.196 seconds was recorded by Max Verstappen at the 2021 race, which was won by Lewis Hamilton.

● Since the 2021 race, Lusail International Circuit has undergone a complete facelift with the capacity increased from 8,000 to more than 50,000. According to circuit CEO, Amro Al Hamad, even the asphalt was replaced, even though it was not necessary.

● The track now houses an 85,000sq/m concert venue – turn the page to find out what’s happening there. There’s also a dedicated Fan Zone with entertainment and interactive F1themed activities.

● Beginning in 2024, the FIA World Endurance Championship will host its season opener at Lusail, the Qatar 1812 km, in addition to the Prologue, the championship's pre-season testing sessions.

Tickets start at QR600 for three-day general admission with access to the Fan Zone and concerts. These ticket holders catch all the race action from Lusail Hill.

ALL THE GOSS

Who’s up to what, at the circuit and beyond. We’ve got all the whispers as we head into race weekend.

Max Verstappen could clinch the drivers’ championship in Qatar and, in fact, short of disaster, is highly likely to do so. It’s just a question of which day. Going into the weekend with 400 points, 177 clear of his nearest rival, Sergio Perez, Verstappen only needs to win the Sprint Race on Saturday to take the crown. And, if he doesn’t do that, well, there’s always the big race on Sunday in which he can secure his place at the top of the podium.

Daniel Ricciardo’s participation at Qatar is in doubt with the Aussie favourite still recovering from the broken hand he sustained in practice at the Dutch Grand Prix. Ricciardo, who replaced Nyck de Vries at Scuderia Alpha Tauri mid-way through the season, sustained a broken metacarpal when he hit a wall to avoid a possible collision with Oscar Piastri. Having undergone surgery at the end of August, Ricciardo was expected to be back at the wheel in time for the Qatar race but that now looks unlikely, and it seems his stand-in, Liam Lawson, will continue to drive in his place. Get well soon Daniel.

Meanwhile Nyck de Vries, having been sacked by Scuderia Alpha Tauri, is rumoured to be making a return to motorsport next season with the German-based Toyota WEC Team, for which he was a reserve driver in 2022.

Four-time world champ Sebastian Vettel, who retired last year, rejoined his former colleagues at the Suzuka Circuit ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix and the whole grid turned out to support him as he unveiled a set of bee hotels aiming to raise awareness on the importance of biodiversity. The kerb at the track’s turn two, where the structures are sited, was painted yellow and black for the occasion and the passionate environmentalist told reporters: “Hopefully this is just the beginning of an initiative and projects around the world… standing up for biodiversity, which is not just insects, it’s all types of animals.”

And, in more Vettel news, after watching the pre-Tokyo practice session, the former Red Bull and Ferrari driver, told Timo Glock for Sky Germany: “I knew it would be hard to be here, but here it is extremely hard. It is… I mean it was my favourite track. I said last year my comeback would be here. Well, now I‘m standing here.” The 36-year-old went on to hint that he’d be up for a substitute drive at Suzuka in the future, should the opportunity arise.

Look out for Lewis Hamilton’s helmet on the track at Lusail. At the Japanese Grand Prix, the star showed off his collaboration with Japanese illustrator Hajime Sorayama to debut a gorgeous, futuristic head cover that would not look out of place in a futuristic movie or a Daft Punk video. We don’t know if it was a one-off showing, just for Japan, but we hope he’ll give us a look at it here in Qatar too.

Will there be a ‘track invasion’ in Qatar – where ticket holders are allowed access to the track after the races to see the podium? At the time of going to press, we still don’t know. But rest assured, if we hear anything, we’ll definitely pass it on.

GREENING THE DESERT

Running over 179 days, until March 28 next year, and expected to attract around three million local, regional and international visitors, the theme of the Expo is ‘Green Desert, Better Environment’, its aims being to educate and inspire while showcasing cuttingedge methods and technology to lessen desertification. Desertification is the process by which vegetation in drylands, that is arid and semi-arid lands, such as grasslands or shrublands, decreases and eventually disappears.

The event covers more than 1.7 million square metres at Al Bidda Park and more than 2,500 volunteers will be on hand over the sixmonth running period, to make sure everything goes smoothly. As a collaboration between the Bureau International Des Expositions (BIE) and the International Association for Horticultural Producers (AIPH), Expo Doha 2023 will host pavilions from more than 80 countries, as well as NGOs (NonGovernmental Organisations) and others. As well as amazing and informative displays and shows, it will provide an international forum for discussion on the global issue of desertification. Many of the countries taking part face the challenge of desertification and the Expo is working with universities and private companies to develop a sustainable agriculture system for combating the problem. Some universities will launch their research at the Expo and a report based on the results will be prepared and shared.

What We Can Do – Areas of Exploration

The way we grow our food has a great impact on the planet’s desertification, that’s why finding better, more efficient and environmentally friendly methods of food production is so crucial.

Expo 2023 Doha aims to create a convergence of people and ideas to accelerate innovation, research and scientific advancements that will utilise technology alongside traditional farming methods to increase sustainability.

Technology and innovation are key drivers in the advancement of solutions for balancing and enhancing farming productivity and environmental sustainability.

The tech section will specially focus on four topics: handson experience – getting the tech to the farmers; rainwater harvesting; alternative energy solutions; and urban greenery/ urban farming which helps control air pollution and reduces the transport carbon footprint of produce.

An Environmental Awareness section will highlight the fragility of the physical environment, looking at affiliation – joining together – as well as education.

There will be a section looking at access to healthy food; ways to encourage healthier eating; reduction of food waste and a ‘Start Your Own Garden’ programme. And also, an area looking at community gardening.

TECHNOLOGY ON WHEELS

The 2024 Hyundai Azera is a premium full-sized saloon with an impressive array of high-end features.

Thanks to the team at Skyline Automotive, FACT was recently invited to inspect and test drive the top-of-the-range Calligraphy model of the all-new Azera, the seventh generation of the brand’s iconic flagship saloon.

Dynamic Exterior Design

From head-on, the 2024 Azera displays a front end that we felt to be a little boxier than its predecessor. This does not, however, equate to a dated-looking design. Instead, we recognised the rectangular shape of this full-sized luxury saloon’s forefront to bestow it with a unique yet refined presence.

Immediately drawing our attention was the distinctive parametric pattern grille in dark chrome, underscored by the futuristically designed continuous horizontal LED lamp that stretches the full width of the front face. This feature is also present at the back end, with both front and rear horizontal LED lamps displaying rhythmic light capabilities, accentuating the novel nature of the car’s exterior makeup.

Shifting our focus to the flanks, we acknowledged the dynamic flair of the car with its elongated bonnet, sloping shoulder line, split C-pillar and classic opera-glass. We noticed how the frameless doors, complete with auto-flush door handles, provide a further touch of class, as do the novel 19-inch alloy wheels which are fitted as standard on all Calligraphy trim models.

Luxurious Interior

Once inside, we noticed the absence of Hyundai’s conventional logo on the steering wheel, having been replaced by four sequential dots.

Looking around the cabin, we were impressed by the wraparound design of the interior and recognised the use of premium materials, including genuine wood and aluminium trimmings, along with the inclusion of ventilated Nappa leather seats with specially designed mono-post headrests.

We discovered both the front and rear to offer sufficient head, shoulder and leg room, with up to five occupants able to sit comfortably on longer journeys. The welcoming nature of the rear seating was amplified by its exclusive reclining capabilities, a first-in-class feature. We loved the inclusion of the panoramic sunroof that amplified the feeling of space and ensured the entire cabin had plenty of natural light. To further enhance the practical nature of the vehicle, Hyundai has included a sizeable, hands-free Smart Power Trunk in its design.

High-End Infotainment & Tech

The all-new Azera contains Hyundai’s Connected Car Digital Cockpit, a feature we found to provide an intuitive and innovative driving experience. This advanced configuration of screens and hardware is powered by high-speed processors and a cuttingedge computing system.

fact magazine 43
CITY RIDES •

This digital setup includes a 12.3-inch full TFT LCD infotainment display, a 12.3-inch fully virtual flatscreen instrument cluster and a 12-inch Head-up Display. This modern configuration combines touch elements with physical buttons, enabling us to control multiple features and functions without removing our hands from the steering wheel.

Perhaps our favourite feature of the new Azera’s interior was the novel turn signals. When indicating left, the speedometer became a separate display on which we could see the same view as the left side-view mirror. The rev counter provided the same function for the right side.

Another must-mention feature is the outstanding 10-speaker Bose sound system that provides a high-quality soundtrack for any journey. In fact, we agreed the high-end tech and features fitted in the all-new Azera are of a quality usually reserved for vehicles with considerably higher price tags. Furthermore, the 2024 model features Hyundai’s advanced driver assistance system, SmartSense. Highlights of this extensive range of features include blind spot monitoring and detection, lane keep assist and lane departure warning, front and back collision avoidance assist and rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist.

Imposing Power & Performance

As is always the case, our favourite part of the day was heading out onto the roads. The latest Azera houses a capable 3.5-litre GDi V6 engine coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

This Smartstream engine produces an impressive maximum power output of up to 300hp at 6,400rpm and a peak torque of up to 360Nm at 5,000rpm.

Navigating our way along Qatar’s roads, certain performance features stood out.

Firstly, the Electronically Controlled Suspension with Road Preview (Preview-ECS). This cutting-edge suspension system analyses the road conditions ahead and automatically adjusts the damping force accordingly, ensuring we had one smooth ride.

Secondly, the Road-noise Active Noise Control (RANC). This fascinating feature uses an acceleration sensor to calculate the vibration from the road to the car and analyses the road noise through a microphone. It then emits inverted sound waves near the occupants’ ears to neutralise the incoming road noise. The result was a tranquil travelling environment from which we watched the kilometres roll silently by.

Thirdly, the Predictive Gear-shift System (PGS). This state-of-theart system improves driving safety and comfort by predicting the acceleration and deceleration conditions of the road ahead. It automatically shifts to the optimal gear, working in tandem with ADAS navigation and radar signals. Pretty impressive to say the least.

Our Verdict

The all-new Hyundai Azera is a capable, classy, full-sized luxury saloon, offering an abundance of cutting-edge tech and a safe and comfortable travelling environment. ✤

Active Assistance

The new model features a whole range of driver assistance options such as Traffic Sign Assist, which links the camera and map data, Active Parking Assist and 360° camera, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active Tailback Assist and Active Brake Assist, among others.

Safety and Choice

The GLE SUV has plenty of outstanding features including PRE-SAFE Impulse Side, which can prepare you and your front passenger for a side impact by moving you sideways, and side airbags in the rear protect the chest area of passengers together with the standard window bags. With DYNAMIC SELECT, you can easily determine driving modes Eco, Comfort, Sport, Offroad and Individual at the touch of a button and the 4MATIC all-wheel drive applies the power delivered by the muscular engines to impressive effect. ✤

QATAR TECHNICIANS TRIUMPH IN SKILLS CONTEST

Francis David and Saminda Gurusinha were among the chosen few crowned as ‘The Elite’ when Nissan Middle East announced the return of its highly anticipated Regional Skills Contest. The competition recognises and rewards employees for their outstanding talent and customer service over the past year. Part of a larger global initiative, the regional contest underscores Nissan's commitment to fostering customer centricity in its workforce and that of its partner network across the Middle East. Just 50 out of more than 820 employees from the eight regional markets in Qatar, Abu Dhabi, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Dubai, Jordan, Kuwait and Lebanon qualified for the regional award ceremony, where they were presented the title of ‘The Elite’. In a true display of harmonious synergy, the event also brought together both Nissan and INFINITI brands to co-host the annual competition for the first time. Honoring the best-performing employees across four categories, the 2023 Regional Skills Contest rewarded an ‘Elite’ group of Sales Consultants, Service Advisors, Parts Executives and Service Technicians.

The top three participants were recognised with prizes and trophies for their exceptional performance, with one ‘Elite’ winner per category. Two of the highest performing Service Technicians and Service Advisors from Nissan, and one from INFINITI in each category, also secured a trip to Japan to attend the Global Skills Contest Award in November.

Nassim Mourani, General Manager Automotive Group at Saleh Al

Hamad Al Mana Company, said: “Nissan and INFINITI take great pride in announcing the highly anticipated comeback of the Regional Skills Contest, a platform that honours a distinguished group of individuals showcasing the brands' unwavering commitment to customer contentment. We are thrilled by the exceptional participants and victors hailing from Qatar, who truly embody the steadfast dedication displayed by our frontline talents throughout the Middle East. Through their efforts, customer experiences are elevated and a strong and enduring brand loyalty is nurtured.”

Competition entrants were evaluated on a comprehensive set of conditions that encompassed tangible and intangible skills, knowledge and processes. Each participant faced real-world scenarios, similar to those encountered in showrooms and service centres, and was required to complete a variety of tasks within a set time frame. From Qatar, the recipients of the honour were both technicians within the service department.

The Skills Contest, which is a global initiative and a test of competence, a measure of knowledge and a race against the clock, has been hosted by Nissan in the Middle East since 1997. Eligibility is based on successfully completing the entire training curriculum and accumulating a minimum of one year's work experience at a dealership within the partner network. Technicians are also required to possess a minimum of NSTEP 2 qualifications. ✤

PEAK PERFORMANCE

Apple has updated its high-end flagship iPhones with the release of the new iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

It’s that time of the year again and Apple has made a few notable changes to its latest top-tier handsets warranting them the ‘Pro’ moniker.

For starters, the new smartphones have been designed using aerospace-grade titanium that’s strong yet lightweight, making them Apple’s lightest Pro lineup yet. Both models also feature a new, refined brush texture, contoured edges and the thinnest borders on an iPhone.

The models come in 6.1-inch (15 Pro) and 6.7-inch (15 Pro Max) sizes that flawlessly showcase the Super Retina XDR display with Always-On and ProMotion technologies that provide an exceptional viewing experience.

Among the latest upgrades, the all-new Action button replaces the previous single-function switch that was used solely to toggle between ring and silent. The Action button now lets users assign additional options such as quick access to the camera or flashlight, activating Voice Memos, or other accessibility features.

Making life a lot more convenient for iPhone owners is the introduction of the USB-C port. A universally accepted standard for charging and transferring data, it now allows the same cable

to charge iPhone, Mac, iPad, etc. Both models are powered by the A17 Pro chip that brings top performance and capabilities.

Impressive camera upgrades enable the equivalent of seven pro lenses with incredible image quality. These include a more advanced 48MP Main camera system that now supports the new super-high-resolution 24MP default. Improvements have been made to portraits with Focus and Depth Control, Night mode and Smart HDR. Also, an all-new 5x Telephoto camera has been added exclusively on iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The models are available in Black Titanium, White Titanium, Blue Titanium and Natural Titanium. ✤

A TIMELY UPGRADE

Apple has unveiled the advanced new Apple Watch Series 9 – which also achieves a significant environmental milestone.

Since its launch eight years ago, the Apple Watch has become the favoured choice in the wearable technology sector. Building on that strong foundation is the Series 9, the first-ever carbonneutral Apple product and part of the Apple 2030 strategy. With a clear focus on optimised performance, Apple continues to take the reins for the processing power of its products into its own hands and that is showcased in the all-new custom Apple silicon S9 SiP – its most superior watch chip yet. Stepping up the level of functionality is a new four-core Neural Engine that can process machine learning tasks up to twice as fast, in comparison to the Series 8. The chip’s power efficiency allows the watch to maintain an allday 18-hour battery life, which can be extremely helpful on days that you might be unable to easily access a charging point.

A new standout feature introduced with this model is the double tap gesture. It allows users to easily control the watch using just one hand and without touching the display. Users can now tap the index finger and thumb of their watch hand together twice to quickly and conveniently perform common actions. The maximum brightness of the watch’s display is up to 2,000 nits, making it much easier to read text in bright sunlight.

For the first time on Apple Watch, Siri can now process requests that do not require information from the internet, such as starting a workout or setting a timer.

The Series 9 is available in 41mm and 45mm sizes. Starlight, Midnight, silver, Product Red and a new pink in aluminium, as well as a stainless-steel case in gold, silver and graphite. ✤

Please give our readers a little background on ARTIC, the company`s history and what it does.

Al Rayyan Tourism Investment Company (ARTIC) is one of the leading hospitality investment companies in Qatar and the region with operations spread across Europe, the United States and MENA region. The company was established in 2003 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Al Faisal Holding, and its current diversified portfolio comprises over 35 hotels, more than 1,500 branded

residences and multiple shopping centres with total assets valued at USD5bn. In addition, ARTIC also owns and operates, The Modern Central Laundry in Doha, a state-of-the-art industrial laundry service facility.

How does your current role differ from what you have done previously as a hotel GM?

In my previous roles as a hotel or cluster General Manager as

fact magazine 56 • 5 OVER 5
The General Manager of ARTIC group talks teamwork, accolades and the future of hospitality.

well as Regional General Manager, the work, approach and focus was more on the day-to-day aspects of the operation, while, at my current role, I more assist each hotel`s GM and their respective teams on the different projects they are having, as well as assisting them on the different initiatives to always elevate the services and products.

Another very important aspect is the communication and coordination with the different operators and their regional brands` teams as well as the different stakeholders for the smooth implementation of all these new projects and initiatives.

You look after a wide range of different properties. How do you differentiate and separate them while ensuring each receives optimum care and attention?

Our wide portfolio comprises carefully chosen operators, which represent different brands that specifically embrace each of these hotel`s specificities, characteristics and ‘soul’, hence, it is important to create and keep the right synergies within each hotel in order to always remain relevant in terms of services and products to ultimately and continuously exceed guests’ expectations.

You`ve won various awards throughout your career. Which are most proud of?

My past awards in my previous postings, whether in Qatar or as a regional head in the MENA region or in Southeast Asia in Indonesia, are the fruit of a lot of hard work, innovation, creativity and teamwork and it is actually a recognition to the entire hotel team's dedication that they strove to always excel and provide

the finest level of services to our guests.

One award I am particularly proud of is the Mustang Award, that I received while posted in Indonesia, as this coveted award recognises young general managers who have excelled under extreme circumstances.

On a personal level, awards are a great recognition to the entire team indeed but, once celebrated, I always look forward and strive to steer our teams to the next achievement so as to always remain, as a team/hotel/brand etc, relevant, hungry to learn and grow and to stay innovative, while pushing the boundaries to create the next benchmark in the industry.

As well as Qatar, you are currently working in the Saudi market which is experiencing huge growth. What are your predictions for the short- and medium-term prospects in these two regional powerhouses?

Qatar, especially in the past 10 years or so, has experienced phenomenal growth especially in the hospitality industry culminating with successfully hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup event at the end of last year, which put the entire region on the global map.

Saudi Arabia – or the sleeping giant, as I liked to call it in the past – used to have a lot of restrictions. However, with its new vision and development goals and with the numerous projects in the pipeline, it will undoubtedly be experiencing exponential growth, especially in the hospitality sector. It will also become a centre for major global events such as football, golf, F1, tennis, boxing, E-sports and gaming and, in fact, sports events in general as well as concerts etc, hence, becoming a catalyst and benefiting the entire region positioning it as a major worldwide tourist hub. ✤

• VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN
Shaiful Kassim, Executive Chef at Hilton Salwa Beach Resort & Villas, explains his inspiration and plans for the future.

What made you decide on a career in the culinary profession?

It was not a mere happenstance for me; it was a deliberate choice born out of a profound and abiding passion for cooking. The culinary arts offer me a unique canvas on which I can express my creativity. The gratification it brings is unparalleled. My journey into the world of cooking finds its roots in the heartwarming memories of my childhood, where my mother's culinary prowess shone brightly. She would prepare our family meals with unwavering love and care, infusing each dish with flavours that told stories of tradition, comfort and connection. These early experiences instilled in me an appreciation for the art of cooking that would become the cornerstone of my career.

Over the years, I've come to realise that the culinary profession is more than just cooking; it's about creating memorable experiences for people. It's about bringing joy, comfort and satisfaction to those who savour the fruits of my labour. It's about the thrill of discovering new flavours, techniques and ingredients. My culinary journey is a never-ending adventure.

You’re quite a new arrival at Hilton Salwa. What attracted you to the property?

It was a choice inspired by the extraordinary nature of this property. What sets Hilton Salwa apart is its impressive portfolio of 20 food and beverage venues with seven being signature restaurants, each with its own unique charm and character. It is not just a resort; it is a destination, a culinary wonderland where gastronomic experiences await around every corner. What enticed me most about managing Hilton Salwa was the challenge it presented. To oversee such a multifaceted and dynamic property is a dream come true for any professional in the hospitality and culinary industry. It's an opportunity to not

only showcase my skills but also to collaborate with a team of talented individuals.

It's a place where I can experiment with new concepts, explore global cuisines and push the boundaries of traditional cooking.

What are your future plans for the dining offering at Hilton Salwa?

Our vision involves elevating the culinary scene to new heights. We plan to introduce innovative concepts that will keep our restaurants not only up to date but also at the forefront of culinary trends. Moreover, we are committed to sustainability and responsible sourcing. We plan to work closely with local producers and artisans to showcase the best of regional ingredients and flavours. In addition, we will invest in staff training and development to ensure that our service matches the excellence of our cuisine.

What is your signature dish, how was it developed and what makes it popular?

Our signature dish, the Pure Blood Black Angus Striploin, is a true culinary masterpiece. Its concept was born out of meticulous research and feedback from our cherished guests, drawing inspiration from the award-winning restaurant Dante. What makes it truly remarkable is its fusion of premium ingredients and the bold influence of Middle Eastern spices. This harmonious blend of flavours creates a sensory experience that is nothing short of extraordinary. Each bite is a journey through layers of taste, from the rich, succulent Angus beef to the complex and aromatic spices that dance on the palate.

As a chef, my greatest joy lies in the ability to take ordinary ingredients and transform them into something truly exceptional. The Pure Blood Black Angus Striploin exemplifies this philosophy. ✤

Hannah Nesbitt discovered a culinary showpiece on a visit to Japanese restaurant, Sakura.

Sakura is a traditional teppanyaki and sushi bar in the heart of Old Doha. Located in the Radisson Blu Hotel, tucked away behind traditional Japanese wall hangings adorned with the iconic pink cherry blossom trees, the restaurant offers an impressive and immersive culinary surprise.

As you make your way from the main hotel through a serene walkway, featuring koi carp and water fountains, you'll arrive at the central focal point of the restaurant, consisting of four teppanyaki counters. Here, seating is strategically arranged around the perimeter to provide the best views of the talented chefs in action.

If you prefer a more private dining experience, there are also additional tables and the option of cosy dining booths too. The neatly folded kimono shaped napkins, welcome you to your seat, as the friendly staff explain the restaurant’s concept and menu.

There is a fish counter for guests to select from and the vast menu provides an array of hot and cold appetisers designed to tantalise your taste buds. Choosing a lighter option to begin with, we were served two piping-hot bowls of delicious and steamy, miso goodness. Miso Shuri is a classic Japanese soybean soup topped with crunchy spring onions and diced tofu, which adds depth and texture to the simple yet delicious dish. In addition, the Sakura speciality, Osuimono, is a clear broth brimming with mushrooms, seafood and greens. Both dishes perfectly primed our appetites for what was still to come.

The large selection of makimono (a roll made from rice or seaweed, vegetables and fish) and sashimi (bite-sized pieces of raw fish) were exquisitely presented on a platter with intricately carved vegetables atop a bed of ice with, of course, the customary wasabi and pickled ginger. As per our request, crab, prawn and fresh fish were crafted carefully to combine flavours from the ocean. The volcano maki provided a combination of vivid flavours and spices that were enhanced with the finishing touch of a crunchy exterior.

The tempura Moriawase – a deep friend combination of shrimps, fish and vegetables – provided a lightly coloured, crispy tempura batter coating the generously sized shrimp and straw mushrooms accompanied by a traditional tempura dipping sauce. This course was a true work of art with flavours to match.

The highlight of the evening undoubtedly centred around the captivating teppanyaki grill presentation. The word teppanyaki historically comes from two Japanese words – teppan, meaning iron plate, and yaki, which means grilled or cooked.

To contrast the fish from our previous courses, we selected the ribeye steak, to be prepared in front of us at the grill. Our skilled chef introduced himself and offered a brief introduction to the ingredients arranged before him. This marked the commencement of the real spectacle. He yielded his razorsharp utensils, dramatically juggling them in the air and even behind his back, setting the teppanyaki grill ablaze with dramatic, billowing flames. Diners nearby watched in amazement, whilst we participated in tricks such as catching the eggs from the chef. This theatrical performance not only showcased his undeniable culinary expertise but also his engaging and playful personality, as he serenaded us with songs and shared lighthearted jokes throughout.

Mountains of diced garlic were piled onto the sizzling grill to give a tasty foundation to our meal, the aromas filled the air and left us excited for more. Handfuls of crunchy, gardenfresh vegetables, including cabbage, onion, pepper and carrot were sautéed on the grill alongside the sizzling steak. As the chef extended his juggling skills to the raw egg, he meticulously cracked it to present a flower shape on the grill, the rice was combined to create our final side dish, vegetable fried rice. The succulent ribeye steak was cooked to a medium temperature with an indulgent richness of melting butter and generous lashings of soy sauce. To serve, the meat was sliced into bite sized pieces and garnished with yet more eye-catching spring onion. To set off the dish further two side sauces were added, in the form of the uniquely flavoured peanut and fragrant ginger. This restaurant brings alive the spirit of traditional Japanese cuisine. Whether you're dining with family, friends or as a couple, everyone can partake in this culinary masterpiece, whilst sharing the delightful flavours. The cooking was elevated into a true evening of entertainment and exquisite food. ✤

THE ESSENCE OF ITALIAN HOSPITALITY

Laura Morris discovers food like Nonna used to make at Cucina in Marriott Marquis City Center Doha Hotel.

Transporting you into the heart-warming ambience of an Italian home, Cucina encapsulates the essence of authenticity and warmth that defines Italian cuisine. It's akin to a visit to a grandmother's rustic countryside kitchen, where each dish is a labour of love. Here, the emphasis is on simplicity, with highquality ingredients taking centre stage.

The restaurant's charm is evident in every detail, with ‘family photos’ adorning the walls, offering a warm glimpse into what lies at the core of its essence. Entering, it's as if you've wandered onto the cobbled streets of an Italian town, with a bustling atmosphere. Giant candles cast a gentle glow, that bathes cosy booths in a comforting warmth. The air is filled with the soothing sounds of chilled jazz, brought to life by a talented singer. And to add to the immersive experience, an open kitchen allows you to witness the culinary magic as it unfolds right before your eyes.

Leading at this rustic gem is the charismatic Chef Claudio, boasting two decades of culinary mastery, eight of those in Cucina. He artfully creates classic Italian dishes with unparalleled expertise. Chef Claudio is spearheading an exciting venture at Cucina, with the creation of a signature Recipe Book concept menu. This innovative addition, complementary to the existing à la carte offerings, will feature a curated selection of signature dishes. Diners will have the opportunity to experience this premium menu, which expands the restaurant's repertoire beyond its beloved ‘home-cooked’ classics. Chef Claudio's vision blends the comfort of tradition with an extended range of flavours, allowing guests to savour unique and enticing creations while still enjoying the familiar atmosphere they've come to cherish.

DINING DELIGHT •

First to arrive, Insalata di Mare al Gazpacho di Limone. In a tribute to Sicilian traditions, it includes seafood reminiscent of a bustling Sicilian market. What sets this dish apart is the dedication to preserving individual flavours. By skilfully presenting each element separately, the dish allows the true essence of the seafood to shine. To accentuate the natural flavours, a touch of acidity from orange slices and a hint of zesty lemon juice are added. This thoughtful approach lets the seafood's inherent character take centre stage. With a harmonious combination of octopus, mussels, calamari, clams, prawns, salmon and cherry tomatoes, all elevated by a simple yet exquisite olive oil and chilli dressing, this dish is journey of flavours.

Next, Ravioli agli Spinaci e Funghi, featuring delicate parcels meticulously crafted from two distinct types of pasta. The first, elegantly plain, lets the pasta's pure essence shine. The second, a vibrant blend of basil and spinach, rests atop a velvety truffle, parmesan and mushroom creamy sauce, delivering an unmistakable truffle aroma and flavour. What's more, the thoughtful sequencing of dishes ensures this plate offers a delightful contrast to the preceding acidity, creating a harmonious symphony of flavours that lingers on the palate.

Rolle di Branzino Gratinato is expertly rolled seabass stuffed with a paste of prawns, mussels, fennel, olives and capers and full of flavour, cooked to perfection and served like a sculpted work of art, alongside a delectable side of La Nostra Caponata. This Sicilian side-dish speciality mirrors the essence of a ratatouille, featuring a medley of aubergine, bell peppers, zucchini and tomatoes, sprinkled with basil to bring the flavours together. What sets it apart is the sweetness of the agrodolce sauce, artfully elevated with a reduction of black vinegar, which imparts a delightful acidity to complement the delicate flavours of the sea bass.

On to the chef's favourite creation: Guancia di Manzo. A culinary delight that marries the robust flavours of beef with the richness of chocolate. This dish draws inspiration from Modica, known for producing some of the world's finest cooking chocolate that’s uniquely bitter. Chef tells of the tradition of combining chocolate with slow-cooked meat dating back to the late 1800s when ladies would savour a piece of chocolate while waiting for their meals to cook, eventually incorporating it into the preparation to avoid unwanted attention. A masterpiece of perfection, the beef cheek is served with a spoon and melts effortlessly in your mouth: a harmonious blend of savoury and sweet flavours.

La Pizza al Pistacchio defies convention, offering a unique and delightful twist: it is double cooked! The result? A crisp, golden crust, stuffed with velvety ricotta and layers of mascarpone to blanket the base. Adorned with circles of colourful vegetables and peppers, it's a visual jewel that bursts with vibrancy. The combination of creamy and smooth textures is mouth-wateringly good and unlike anything I’d sampled!

We also taste Filetto Wellington all'Italiana, Cucina’s take on a Beef Wellington, with a mushroom paste between perfectly cooked beef tenderloin and flaky pastry, it’s a dish that speaks for itself. To end the meal, a generously portioned Tiramisu, showcasing its rich and creamy layers. The flavours are a harmonious symphony of mascarpone, coffee-soaked sponge and a hint of cocoa, providing a delightful contrast of textures and a perfect balance

of sweetness and bitterness.

From this month, guests can look forward to this enriching experience at Cucina. A recipe book to take home explains cooking methods, temperatures, ingredient stories. Additionally, from October, Cucina will host Mozzarella Masterclasses, offering a chance to learn, share, try and taste various cheeses: an engaging evening with expert speakers.

For us it’s evident that Cucina seamlessly blends Chef Claudio's unwavering passion for hearty Italian fare with an inviting, cosy dining atmosphere. Each bite of his creations offers a tantalising glimpse into the delightful experience of dining at Chef Claudio's own home, where genuine Italian recipes come to life with passion and flair. ✤

ISLAND LIFE

Authentic Indian cuisine tempted Sanaa Choudry on a trip to Banana Island.

• FOODIE FIESTA

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve stepped off a boat to escape the hubbub of Doha, but an outing to the idyllic retreat that we know as Banana Island is always a welcome delight. Visits to Qatar’s own crescent of golden beach, azure skies and scorching rays are typically accompanied by a stay in one of their luxurious villas or to partake in the many water sports on offer. But this time, I’m here for an afternoon of exquisite lunchtime dining and where better to indulge my taste buds than to take a seat at the Q Lounge and Restaurant. With wide offerings both indoors and on the terrace by the pool deck, it’s easy to be swiftly raptured by the panoramic views of the West Bay skyline.

Promising a delectable fusion of Asian Clay Pot Cuisine that simmers with authentic Indian aromas, this island favourite is unveiling a revamped menu this season to elevate the already delicious flavours on offer. Bringing the beachy outdoors in, sandy tones scattered with subtle hues of turquoise have carefully been selected for the indoor furnishings – so, no matter where you’re seated, you’ll have the genuine island experience.

Excited to sample their new tasting menu, Shakeel – the restaurant manager – explains that this culinary cruise has been crafted by Executive Chef Ian Minnis and Executive Sous Chef Kishore Rout.

To wet the appetite, a sumptuous avocado amuse-bouche is offered and promptly followed by an array of summery starters to tackle the sizzling weather. First up, the Quinoa and Prawn Salad. Juicy morsels of the sea, accompanied by fresh cherry tomatoes and lightly decorated with caviar sit on a bed of seasoned quinoa. Yet, the most enticing element of this dish is the sporadic chunks of sharp strawberry that can be found hidden. The marrying of intercontinental flavours is unlike anything I’ve tasted before and (although not intending to), I polish off the plate. Continuing the summer spread, I am presented with an Avocado Caprese Salad and Stuffed Eggplant and Halloumi dish. As expected, the creamy burrata of the Caprese Salad immediately melts in the mouth as the sharpness of the balsamic reduction adds a subtle tang. Adding in a sprinkling of crunchy yet sweet pine nuts ensures that a symphony of textures is sampled in every mouthful. With a quick need to cleanse the palate, the elevated menu boasts a trio of tropical mocktails: Q Tiki, Pina Colada and the Tropical Punch. The citrusy blend of passion fruit with orange, topped with crisp apple slices does the trick – I’m ready to tackle the main courses.

Renowned for rich and diverse flavours, which are a result of centuries of culinary traditions, the three main courses showcase more of the classic Indian flavours that we all know and I, at the very least, love. It’s only fitting that the first main is a Tandoori Crusted Salmon, which pays homage to the gentle lapping of the blue waters just up ahead. Smoky, juicy and succulent to the very core, flakes of fresh fish sizzle on the tongue, whilst the crisp accompaniment of a carrot topping and tandoori crust offer a much-needed bite. I’m not expecting to enjoy this as much as I do, but again find that the plate has been cleaned up in a matter of mere minutes. As they say, the heart wants what the heart wants! While the Royal Vegetarian Kebab celebrates the variety of seasonal vegetables available at this time of year, it is the Lamb Shank Biryani that steals the show. I

fact magazine 69
FOODIE FIESTA •

am delighted to find its meat fork-tender. When done wrong, lamb shanks can be tough and gamey, yet every strand of the meat in this dish is succulent and tender with just the right amount of chew, leaving a smoky savouriness swirling on the tongue. Shakeel had mentioned that this dish would transport me to the heart of India, and he is a man of his word!

Just an hour earlier I had been told to anticipate a stunning finale to the main courses – the Chef’s Special. What I do not anticipate is the visually striking Bamboo Biryani turning up at my table. Originating in Southern India, this flavourful rice dish continues to be made with the fragrant spices of the traditional biryani that we all know and yearn for but, rather than simmering away in a clay pot, it is cooked inside of a bamboo shoot. When compared to the Lamb Shank Biryani, the flavours are much more subtle and sweet: an ode to the innovation of the Q Lounge and Restaurant and the creativity of the chefs at hand.

All of these delicious bites have certainly rendered me full, but I am a firm believer that there is indeed a separate stomach for desserts, and the Coconut Meringue Tube is a sweet and sour reverie that breaks away from the traditional Indian sweets I’ve grown up with. When broken into, the crisp meringue exterior falls apart and reveals a coconutty creamy centre, laced with mixed berries. A perfect ending to the perfect meal you might say.

Whether you choose to observe the idyllic bounteous views with friends in the shade or opt for a romantic dinner under a cabana on the deck, you can be certain that a sumptuous meal will be savoured at the Q Lounge and Restaurant. ✤

PLOTTING AN EXCEPTIONAL COURSE

Laura Morris discovered the perfect location for a mini vacay in the heart of the city.

• STAYCATION
STAYCATION •

Fairly new to the Doha hotel scene and working hard to chisel itself into the calendar of every socialite in the city, Le Méridien City Center, Doha is a welcome addition to the ‘staycation’ market. The name is a reference to the coordinate lines that span the globe and affirms the brand's international focus. You’ll soon spot the location coordinates subtlety in and around the hotel: N°25 32’ E 51° 53’.

Our first impressions are what those of us living in Doha have come to expect from a five-star establishment –glamorously elegant, grand and meticulously clean. But this lobby has cleverly curated stylish art pieces that elevate the overall look. Its close proximity to the city centre and easy access to many local amenities mean Le Méridien is situated perfectly, the only problem is, you won’t want to leave the hotel!

The stylish, simple hotel room provides the perfect accommodation for a weekend getaway. The space is generously proportioned, offering a sense of openness and tranquillity, and boasts floor-to-ceiling windows that frame captivating views of the city below. The focal point is a sumptuous bed positioned to take full advantage of the Doha city skyline. The décor is tastefully understated, creating a soothing atmosphere. A large bed, adorned with oversized pillows invites you to sink in and unwind. Thoughtfully well equipped, this room includes everything you might need for a relaxing stay. Notably, Le Méridien embraces an eco-conscious approach, evident in the use of refillable coffee pods and toiletries, making it a destination that's not only stylish but also environmentally mindful.

DESTINATION EATERIES

Café Rouge

This café, located on the ground floor, serves sweet and savoury bites: bagels, juices, coffees and cakes. Our choice today? Afternoon tea! We give our coffee orders and tuck in to the range of delights placed before us. The perfectly presented pastries that we sample would not be out of place in even the finest of French patisseries. Touches of gold leaf lift the delicacies to the next level of opulence. Everyone knows that no afternoon tea would be complete without the addition of freshly baked scones, don’t they? Café Rouge certainly share my enthusiasm for this indulgence. Included are some miniature scones, served with generous portions of jam and clotted cream. Attached to the café is Bar Rouge, an intimate setting of refinement and sophistication. This bar serves as the stage for a captivating array of masterclasses and themed events, featuring esteemed experts who share their knowledge and passion with willing participants.

to stand out from the crowd in the hotel breakfast market and this place does! With dishes to suit every style from around the globe, including a vast selection of hot dishes, cold cuts and fresh fruits, it boasts enough variation to keep every guest satisfied, but it’s the extra touches that make this an event and not your average breakfast buffet! Where it’s usual to find some honey of course, La Gourmandise boasts six kinds, this is also true of the butter selection. Cranberry butter, whipped and spreadable, is a new and delightful addition to my freshly toasted sourdough slice, but I could have opted for cinnamon, date or even white chocolate butter! Everything on offer is superbly fresh and presented impeccably. Waiters personally deliver a ‘Bite of the day’. A table to the left of the main buffet area offers a selection of juices and cold drinks. My attention is drawn to the basket of ‘eye-openers’, a fruity boost shot, designed to jolt your senses awake with a vibrant burst of flavour. Once you have gathered your breakfast choices, you can gaze out across the city. La Gourmandise’s vantage point offers a panoramic view that is captivating, a bustling cityscape in motion.

Caza

Transport yourself to the heart of Morocco at Caza, with the Maghreb Moroccan feast, an enchanting culinary experience offered every Friday. Dining as the sun gracefully sets, offers a truly authentic ambiance. The dishes served here are not only exquisitely presented but also meticulously garnished to enhance both presentation and flavour. The feast commences with a tantalising cold mezze plate, each item bursting with distinct flavours. This delightful spread is accompanied by warm bread and an array of traditional dips. The pièce de résistance is the Lamb Tajine, a masterpiece of soft, melt-in-your-mouth meat that effortlessly falls off the bone. Served with warm bread, to help savour every last drop of the rich, flavourful sauce.

The finale is a cherished tea ritual, coupled with the delicate Arabic sweet selection. Presented on a silver plate, this age-old tradition is nothing short of spectacular. The tea is poured with the utmost reverence, served piping hot and steeped in the customs of Morocco. Moroccan tea leaves are boiled before the addition of sugar, ensuring a perfect blend of flavours. To top it off, they graciously leave the teapot in your care, encouraging you to indulge in a second helping, which of course, we do! It’s a fitting conclusion to an exquisite Moroccan feast.

In room breakfast.

Having heard the hype about the in-room breakfast experience, we are highly anticipating its arrival, and it is nothing short of exceptional. Our order, thoughtfully taken the previous day, arrives promptly as promised, setting the tone for a seamless and delightful meal. As the trolley is wheeled into our room, we are greeted by

a display of artistry, a vibrant feast. The menu was vast, featuring sumptuous fresh raspberry waffles drizzled with warm syrup, a vibrant fruit platter bursting with colour and an exquisite combination of caviar on toast. The star dish, Eggs Royale served on a large slice of sourdough bread, who could resist? To wash it all down, we enjoy fresh orange juice and a perfectly brewed coffee. Every bite is a harmonious blend of flavours, and the meticulous presentation only adds to the overall sensory delight, making our morning truly extraordinary.

HOTEL FACILITIES

Outside Pool & L’apero

L’apero: a cosy pool area with a refreshment bar that sits between the inside and outside spaces. Large canopies provide much desired shaded areas over both the pool and the central bubbling Jacuzzi. A selection of refreshing drinks served alongside chilled beats sets the tone for relaxation. Attentive staff are on hand to help with your every desire. Anyone that’s been in Doha during the summer months will know the benefit of regular deliveries of cool towels to beat the heat! Dappled sunlight hits the pool from around 12pm and maintains its blessings until late afternoon. A perfect place for an afternoon snooze!

Spa

Would any staycation experience be complete without a stop by at the hotel spa? For me, an indulgent treatment and a chance to really unwind is the cherry on top of a weekend trip. From the moment I step inside, the space envelopes me in a soothing embrace, with the fragrant notes of lemongrass oil elevating the environment to a new level of comfort and warmth. My hour of total bliss begins with an aromatherapy massage which is a revelation, my therapist’s hands as soft and supple as the fragrant rose and eucalyptus leaves cradled in a bamboo bowl beneath my face. Leah, the Balinese masseuse, works her magic, and I emerge from the treatment room feeling completely relaxed and rejuvenated. Beyond the spa, on the 43rd floor, the indoor pool boasts uninterrupted views of the corniche: all the way from Doha Port right round to West Bay and everything in between. We soon find ourselves relaxing into the reclined seats just looking out and watching the world go by.

THE COLOURS OF AUTUMN

Though we might not be seeing much a cooling in the weather yet here in the Middle East, around the world, the seasons are changing with dramatic effect. Now’s the time to hop on a plane and witness some of the most gorgeous autumn scenery across North America.

• TRAVEL Shenandoah National Park
TRAVEL •

Stowe, Vermont

New England is famed for its fall foliage (please excuse the Americanism but fall and leaves just go together). And Stowe is known as the ‘Fall Colour Capital’. This charming alpine town is sandwiched between Mount Mansfield State Forest and Putnam State Forest and, though it’s a year-round destination that’s particularly known for its great skiing, it’s also one of the most popular places for leaf peepers – those who make special journeys to witness the splendour of the autumn leaves changing colour. Head there in mid-October to witness the spectacle while hiking at Smugglers Notch or on the Mansfield Mountain – Sunset Ridge trail loop or during a boat trip on the Waterbury Reservoir. There are plenty of things to do in the town, many of them foliage related, such as forest zip-lining and guided tours. And, thanks to its outstanding surroundings, the area is a big hit with artists – local, national and international –with gostowe.com noting: “While fall will paint the outdoor landscapes in vibrant colours and winter will drape hillsides with pristine snow, you can find unique works of art at a local gallery anytime of the year.”

Having been named by Fodor’s Travel as the number one ski town for foodies in the US, it’s no great surprise that Stowe has plenty to offer in the way of great restaurants. You won’t go wrong with a trip to Spruce Peak ski resort where you’ll find two great eateries. Both relatively new and much anticipated, Alpine Hall and Tipsy Trout fall under the watchful eye of Chef Sean Blomgren and offer thoughtful dishes with a very specific flavour thanks to partnerships with a range of local producers.

Or check the breakfast-only restaurant Butler’s Pantry where you’ll find crowd-drawing pancakes. Book early and you could even stay in one of the cute rooms and suites upstairs – the Butler House was built around 1830 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

The namesake of perhaps one of America’s most recognisable folk songs, the Shenandoah National Park extends across 792sq/km along the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Skyline Drive runs its length. The best time to see the changing foliage is from mid-September to mid-November and, this month, there’s the chance to do something a little different during your leaf peeping journey. The Shenandoah Fall Foliage Bike Festival runs from October 20 to 22. The event attracts up to 750 cyclists from across the country and there is a range of rides – from 10 miles up to 100 – to take part in for everyone from seasoned riders to novices and kids. You’ll cycle through breathtakingly beautiful countryside and, new for this year, there’s a big after-ride meal and live music to enjoy. Sounds perfect.

The national park is just 75 miles from Washington DC and is doable in a (long) daytrip but, if you’re a nature lover, plan a longer stay to take in the stunning scenery of a land bursting with waterfalls, wildflowers and quiet

wooded hollows and wildlife from deer to black bears and a multitude of songbirds. There are several campsites within the park but, if you don’t fancy roughing it under canvas, there are also cabins, yurts – with your own hot tub – and hotels such as the sweetly named, four-star Sugar Hill Inn with its heritage-themed accommodation and on-site massage treatments – perfect after a long day of hiking.

Laurel Highlands, Pennsylvania

Perhaps one of our favourite options because there’s just so much going on in this area, which spans 7,770sq/km made up of Fayette, Somerset and Westmoreland Counties. There’s something for everyone in terms of recreation with trail, river and mountain activities sure to please any outdoor enthusiast. Conquer the rapids in a whitewater raft. Soar across the treetops via zip line. Bike the famous Great Allegheny Passage through the highlands from Pittsburgh to D.C. or hike the 70-mile Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail.

Or, if you want to take things a bit easier, you can still enjoy the amazing foliage and surroundings at a slower pace while visiting numerous theatres and galleries. And make sure to stop by Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob, where you’ll discover grounds littered with sculptures by the likes of Anthony Caro and Claes Oldenburg.

Festival when more than 400 artists and craftspeople line the streets and Square in Bedford and Fort Bedford Park. There’s live musical entertainment, parades, including an antique car show, the Fall Foliage Queen contest and much more. And, of course, no street festival would be complete without an array of traditional foods from apple dumplings to hot sausage sandwiches. And October 7 and 8 also boasts the Delmont Apple ‘N Arts Festival which promises fun for all ages and raises money for non-profit organisations.

Since the area is so huge, there are multiple accommodation options available from cosy cabins and cottages to friendly B&Bs where you can sit on the porch and enjoy the scenery and stunning sunsets. We like the look of the Nemacolin resort which offers golf and a field club as well as a huge array of wildlife and, later in the year, skiing, snowboarding and tubing at Mystic Mountain. The resort is home to the Falling Rock boutique hotel and The Grand Lodge which has been completely refurbished and is due to open this autumn.

Wherever you choose to witness the changing seasons, you’ll find lots of pumpkin-based Halloween activities towards the end of the month and, if you stay a bit longer, you’ll be running into snow season, something that’s really special for us desert dwellers.

If you decide to go leaf peeping this autumn, we’d love to see your pics on our social media pages. ✤

THE DARK SIDE

Qatar will take another step to establish itself on the literary stage with tales of crime and crookedness in a book conceived by two former residents and featuring current Doha-ites among a regional cast of crime writers.

Now, let’s be clear, we’re not talking about real crimes, but rather the type many frustrated writers conjure in their heads day in and day out, as they scrabble for plots with twists and turns followed by triumphs and justice. Living in Doha, this was a scenario Michael Lynes and Alex Shaw, themselves both successful authors and members of the Crime Writers’ Association (CWA), became all too aware of as they got to know their fellow scribes.

To highlight the crime writing talent in the region, they decided to put together a book – the tentatively titled Arabian Noir, a short story crime anthology – from the birthplace of storytelling – the Middle East. The anthology – will be a first, not just in the region but globally, to be produced by members of a CWA Chapter and it will be showcased at The Emirates Literature Festival in Dubai in 2024.

Alex and Michael are long-time admirers of the Middle East, previously based in Doha and now in Dubai, and keen

to support and promote writing in the region.

Michael is a historical crime author, Emirates Literature Festival prize winner, and CWA Gulf Chapter convenor, while Alex is the best-selling author of the Jack Tate, Aidan Snow and Sophie Racine thrillers and a member of The International Thriller Writers organisation and the CWA. Both were in Doha as, what they term, ‘trailing spouses’ while their wives worked full-time. Alex says: “I was writing in my spare time (in-between the school runs and shopping). Whilst I was in Doha, I secured a publishing contract with HarperCollins to republish my existing thriller series and wrote my shortlisted bestseller Total Blackout. When the Jaipur Literary Festival Doha was staged in 2019, I was honoured to be a panellist.

“On my first meeting with Michael, we discussed what we could do to push crime and thriller writing in the Gulf and publishing an anthology of stories written by those based in the region, seemed to be a good way to do so.”

Michael continues: “I met Alex through the Crime Writers’

Association, of which we are both members of the Gulf chapter. He had the idea to put together an anthology in early 2023 and we’ve been hard at work putting it together since then.”

The anthology has taken around six months to curate and edit and, including Alex and Michael, features 12 writers who are either formerly or currently based in the region. The Doha contributors are Greig Parker and Mohana Rajakumar, both self-published authors.

Grieg told us: “My story is about an old man returning to Qatar to reclaim a pearl necklace he won in an illegal card game 55 years earlier, when he was a young merchant seaman.

“I wrote a lot of technical and academic literature during my career as an archaeologist, which is why I use the pen name S.G. Parker to distinguish my creative writing from my academic publications. It was only after moving to Qatar about eight years ago that I fell in love with writing fiction. Since then, I have been focused on learning the craft.

“I write from a desire to understand how other people understand and experience the world. Inspiration for particular stories often comes from small incidents I witness or hear about, incidents that make me wonder ‘what if…?’

For example, my story Jack in the Box is inspired by my late uncle, who, like the main character, visited Qatar when he was a young merchant seaman in the 1960s – although, I hasten to add, he never took part in an illegal card game! Sadly, he never got the chance to visit the country again in later life, despite his wish to.

“I am in Qatar because my wife is a professor at Weill Cornell Medicine - Qatar. We moved from the UK in 2014 and love life here.”

Mohana has lived in Doha for 18 years and is currently the director of a film lab she founded for teen girls, called Shorts by Shorties. She previously served as a professor of writing and taught history as a schoolteacher. She has written several novels.

“I’ve been writing for 20-plus years if you count grad school; longer if you count short stories penned in childhood,” she says. “I love telling stories in unique settings with diverse characters that readers might not otherwise get a chance to meet/know.”

Her contribution to the anthology tells of Maryam and Ali, a married couple – she a journalist, he a criminal investigator – who disagree about the real cause of death in a recent murder. They are characters from a crime novel series Mohana has written and adapted into a feature film script. To quote the book blurb: “Through crowded souqs to the shores of countries far away, readers will uncover hidden secrets and untold truths while painting their own vivid pictures of the crimes. Offering nuanced portrayals of people, traditions and differing landscapes, readers will meet detectives on the hunt, amateur sleuths navigating knotty crimes and ordinary people pursuing extraordinary paths in the name of justice.”

We’ll let you know where the book will be available as soon as we hear. We can’t wait! ✤

ON THE RECORD

POP/INDIE ROCK GUTS

American singer and songwriter, Oliva Rodrigo, has come out with her second studio album, via Geffen Records. A high school musical-style creation, it touches on your typical teenage themes, from boyfriends and breakups to identity crises.

Olivia’s voice has a young quality, with opinionated and angsty undertones, which complements the vibe of the album. Ballad Of A Homeschooled Girl features an unbridled drum set coupled with Olivia’s shouty tone that matches the frustration behind not fitting in.

All tracks have a catchy, addictive vibe. In fact, the singles Vampire and Bad Idea Right? debuted atop the Billboard charts and have taken YouTubers and TikTokers by storm, as popular background scores. Get Him Back! , another single, also stands out.

Lacy , a slow-paced song, offers variety, with the acoustic guitar matching its easy-going energy. However, it’s in keeping with the overall theme – you sense self-restraint in the singer’s voice, underpinned by what can only be teenage passion.

Whether you’re young and in love or seeking a flash back to the days when you were, GUTS is the rollercoaster to ride.

DANCE MUSIC/ EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC

Playing Robots Into Heaven

If you’re someone who enjoys exploring unique approaches to music, then you must listen to this sixth studio album by English singer and songwriter James Blake. The deliberate choices on textures, from scratchy percussion and liquid synths to background choirs and electronic elements, all point toward the experimental nature of this release via Republic and Polydor Records. Tell Me is such a club anthem, with foottapping beats and techno tunes that will have you throwing shapes on the dance floor from the get-go.

Fall Back will liven up the mood of any lounge in seconds. The clicking like that of wooden tools being hit together, electronic sets and echoing vocals, all conjure up a trance-like mood.

He’s Been Wonderful is reminiscent of the quirky keyboard creations by Ross in the popular sitcom Friends – but, of course, in a good way – it’s futuristic. The title track numbs the listener and is in keeping with the overall acoustics of the album.

Blake dips into his dubstep background on this album, bringing in elements of techno, house and ambient. However, he doesn’t stray away from his signature pensiveness, causing the listener to mentally levitate.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY Making It So: A Memoir

Beloved actor Sir Patrick Stewart finally puts pen to paper for a memoir that promises to delve into his life from his humble beginnings, in a home environment that led him to become a vocal advocate against domestic abuse, to mega stardom on stage and screen. Along the way, the Shakespearean great has garnered multiple awards, appeared in seriously diverse settings from X Men to Sesame Street , and temporarily gained a much-loved rescue dog, Ginger Girl. We can’t wait to find out more.

CRIME DRAMA Judgment Prey

The New York Times #1 bestselling author is back with another case for Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers. The seemingly senseless shooting of a judge and his two young sons has local police and FBI stumped. There could be a monetary motive but, after a life on the bench, Judge Alex Sand had plenty of enemies. As each lead proves flawed, Davenport and Flowers are tasked with doing what no-one else seems able to, chasing down the killer despite some puzzling obstruction.

CLASSICAL INSPIRATION MEETS HOLLYWOOD STYLE

The BALLY Fall/Winter 2023 collection celebrates a modern take on the masterful Swiss craftsmanship of leather goods and accessories that stretches back to the mid-19th century.

Astrong, elevated silhouette for women and men merges tropes of Hollywood past and present.

Ready-to-wear statements for day and night reflect the bygone grandeur of Da Vinci’s Casa degli Atellani, as its dark wood balustrades, scrolled ironwork, mosaic floors and opulent marble fireplaces create a rich dialogue with the season’s autumnal palette. Elusive characters embody a cinematic allure, as a duality of comfort and modern elegance abounds: structured leather coats and sophisticated tailoring is layered with fine-gauge ribbed knitwear and silk pyjama separates to create contemporary expressions of effortless luxury.

In a subtle play of depth, decoration and trompe l’oeil, both the women’s and men’s wardrobes combine the rigour of smart tailoring with sleek leather separates, the gold BALLY emblem and bevelled Bally Spell, and the nostalgic touch of archival prints. San Crispino, the patron saint of shoemakers, appears illustrated on satin in an archival scarf print from the 1920s, as a singular graphic statement amongst sleek moments of ‘corduroy’ suede, embossed python and lizard-effect leathers, plush shearling, quilted patent and velvet. Stonewashed denim and pinstriped English wools add elements of contrasting casual and formalwear, lifted by harmonious accessories in jewel tones of burgundy, ochre and deep ocean blue.

The BALLY Fall/Winter 2023 accessories collection creates a bold counterpart to the silhouette, fusing classical European and Western influences in tactile finishes from velvet and suede thigh-high boots in soft earth tones, to bright embossed ‘croc’ and patent handbags and weekender styles.
