Summer’s here and the time is right… to be somewhere else. Much as I love Qatar, I have to admit that the hotter months in our region present something of a challenge. So, at this time each year, we take a look at some of the best travel options for the summer holidays. Add to that the coming break for Eid al-Adha, and there’s even more reason to start scanning the atlas and that’s just what we’ve done to bring you a range of destinations where you’ll find everything from eco-tourism to foodie breaks. I’d love to hear what you think and your tips for your own favourite destinations.

Among our interviews this month, I got the chance to put some questions to Malu Marsault of This Mama Invests. I was blown away by her take on the world of finance and how we can all make better use of our cash – particularly since this in an area in which I could certainly do with some help. I’ll be checking out her free masterclass.

In our dining section, lucky Luke got to try out the gloriously Greek OPA – a cuisine and country for which I have a massive soft spot – and we also scoped out some seriously social venues.

And, of course, we held the much-anticipated Fact Dining Awards Qatar 2023 – a fab, red-carpet gala event at which we celebrated and awarded the Best and Favourite winners from our country’s amazing dining sector. There’s lots happening across Qatar in the coming weeks and you’ll find details of some of the hottest events in our Listen Up pages and, as usual, we have our regular roundups of news from the worlds of tech, motors, entertainment and fashion.

Happy reading everyone.

QATAR’S GOLDEN BOY ON SCREEN

An exclusive docuseries about Olympic high-jump Gold Medal winner Mutaz Barshim has been released on streaming platform TOD.

Mutaz Barshim: Defying Gravity goes beyond the Olympic high-jump champion’s gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 games. The three-part series highlights Barshim’s greatest sporting moments and follows his journey as he prepares for another high-jump season.

The docuseries highlights his ascent from humble beginnings in Doha to becoming one of the most recognisable athletes across the world. Mutaz’s 2.43m jump in 2014 is the highest of the century and the second highest in humankind’s history, being two centimetres short of the world record.

With three consecutive world high jump titles, he is also an Olympic Gold medallist (2020) and two-time silver medallist (2012 and 2016). In his own words from the series: “I’m currently at a level where I can’t get enough of one goal. Now, I am trying to pull off every possible achievement.

When I hang up my boots, I will have time to celebrate my achievements. But now, I enjoy wins for a couple of days, then I set my eyes on the next goal. Today, I have a goal of becoming the best jumper in history. When Mutaz retires, I want them to remember my name.”

For young athletes from the region, Mutaz has one message: “Dream big, and take all the support you can get. Get a good coach and listen to them. Be prepared to make personal sacrifices and be patient. Achieve for yourself, the fans, and your country.”

John Paul Mckerlie, VP Marketing and Sales at TOD, said:

“Mutaz Barshim’s ambition and determination are the reason behind his successful championship-winning career. With our new and exclusive series, Defying Gravity, we share the story and never-before-seen footage of this Arab athlete and are confident that the sports docuseries will serve as an inspiration to all the budding athletes from the region.”

ICONIC WATCH BRAND GOES HOLLYWOOD

Swiss luxury watch maker TAG Heuer’s much-loved Carrera turns 60 this year and to mark the occasion, the manufacturer has launched a Hollywood action-comedy.

Starring TAG Heuer brand ambassador Ryan Gosling and Vanessa Bayer, the offbeat chase thriller sees Gosling on the run from Bayer’s Prop Master as she attempts to take his beloved TAG Heuer Carrera off his wrist – something he doesn’t plan on letting her do.

Produced by David Leitch’s 87 North – responsible for some of the most iconic action films of the last decade, from John Wick to Deadpool 2 – and directed by Nash Edgerton (Mr Inbetween), Gosling shot The Chase for Carrera while working with Leitch on feature The Fall Guy in Australia. The film sees Gosling and Bayer battle it out in high-octane style, as everything from iconic sports cars to heavyduty trucks to electric production buggies are raced through various movie sets in a spectacle of blockbuster proportions. In a knowing nod to its film-within-a-film setup, Leitch plays himself as the on-screen director. It’s a fitting celebration of an iconic timepiece that was born of the racetrack when it was first created in 1963 by TAG Heuer’s legendary former CEO Jack Heuer.

Named after the notoriously dangerous Carrera Panamericana race, it was designed with readability and simplicity in mind, vital for drivers navigating high-speed bends. The result was an icon – elegant and uncluttered, sporty and daring – that spoke to Heuer’s love of midcentury design yet remains timeless six decades on. What better way, then, to celebrate its 60th year than with a world-first action extravaganza that few would even think possible? The film even comes with its own Hollywood

posters and timeless taglines. ‘How bad does he want that watch?’ reads one. Answer: badly!

Just as the word Carrera itself doesn’t have a single meaning – along with race, it can also be translated as career or simply path, the perfect name not just for the daring, but simply for those with independent spirits – so the film, too, contains multitudes.

Not only does it manage to be many movies in one – going from adrenaline-fuelled chase film to slapstick comedy to mob drama to Western parody and back again – this mini blockbuster contains a range of easter eggs, each one a nod to the Carrera’s illustrious past – catch the movie for yourself to see if you can spot them.

The iteration of the Carrera that Gosling is desperate to keep hold of is the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph. Topped with a ‘glassbox’, a sapphire crystal dome that flows seamlessly over the tachymeter scale that runs around the dial edge and into the case, it comes in a stunning signature blue dial on a blue calfskin leather strap. An icon never looked so modern – and no wonder Gosling is not about to give it up easily. This is one timepiece worth putting your foot down for – literally. Bayer’s Prop Master, meanwhile, is wearing the new TAG Heuer Carrera 36mm in pink. ✤ GO: VISIT HTTPS://ALMAJEDJEWELLERY.ME/ FOR MORE

AN ART ERUPTION

An exhibition aimed at exciting debate and reflection is taking place at Msheireb Downtown.

The expo, titled Eruption, which runs at Anima Gallery until June 10, features selective creations by artists from around the world, including emerging talents and established masters.

Visitors will be able to view pieces by: Amal Al Aathem, Anachar Basbous, Anastasia Nysten, Clara Carvajal, Houmam Al Sayyed, Jean Boghossian, Jumanah Abbas, Mahmoud Obaidi, Maryam Al Homaid, Morrison Pierce, Nadim Karam, Nicolas Panayotou, Nourbanu Hijazi, Peter Zimmermann, Said Baalbaki, Tamara Haddad, Yasmina Nysten and Zheng Lu.

Doha Corniche is now home to a striking monument which marks the city’s recognition as Arab Tourism Capital 2023.

The impressive title was awarded by the Arab Ministerial Council earlier this year and the marker, which reflects the official Doha Arab Tourism Capital 2023 logo, is positioned in a photogenic location on the Corniche. The logo and monument design reflect the city of Doha as a modern centre for tourism rooted in its rich cultural heritage.

Since Doha received the prestigious award, Qatar’s tourism sector has welcomed an incredible start to the year. With more than a million visitors in the first quarter of 2023, Qatar registered its highest ever first quarter of international arrivals.

Italy has many tourist hubs but is also home to hidden gems such as Pitigliano. A picture-postcard town on the southern tip of Tuscany, it has a history rooted in the Etruscan era. Walk through the old town, featuring Mediaeval walls fitted with centuries-old gateways and an aqueduct with impressive archways, all signs of a rich past. Head to Piazza della Repubblica, a public square dotted with cafés, where you can enjoy sfratti, a short-crust pastry with a chewy toffee, honey, walnut and nutmeg filling. Piazza S. Gregorio VII also has restaurants and local handicraft shops. Sip on local grape varieties paired with rustic, home-style ragù and bread gnocchi. Cattedrale dei Santi Pietro e Paolo, in the same vicinity, exhibits baroque architecture, artistic interiors and a Mediaeval bell tower. The Palazzo Orsini or Orsini Palace houses an archeological museum, a museum of religious art, as well as paintings and sculptures.

Characterised by Mediaeval buildings, rustic canals and cobbled-stone streets, this picturesque city is thronged by tourists – a testament to its many offerings. Bruges is home to several historic buildings with splendid architecture; the Church of Our Lady exhibits an impressive Gothic-style façade. Admire the glorious sunrise from the morning deck, soak into a Huon Pine bath tub out on the evening deck or spend your day at the art studio drawing, painting, sculpting, knitting and reading.

It’s springtime in Cappadocia, which means pleasant weather. The region is home to stunning volcanic rock formations, ‘fairy chimneys’, that seem to change colour at sunset – surreal! These were carved into underground cities centuries ago to home Christian refugees and have since been restored by hoteliers. Book a cave hotel such as Artemis Cave Suites, which has uniquely designed rooms and offers stunning views of the Göreme valleys. You’ll often spot colourful hot air balloons gliding across blue skies, which can be meditative in a way. You can even book your own hot air balloon experience, which will be taken care of by the hotel. Escape for an hour or so as you float, taking in the mesmerising bird’s-eye view of the valleys. THE RISE OF HONGQI

FACT spent the day in the all-new Ousado, a creation sure to make its mark in the luxury sedan segment.

This month, thanks to the team at Al Mana Motors, FACT magazine got behind the wheel of the allnew HONGQI Ousado. Having already experienced the opulent HONGQI H9 and the hugely capable HONGQI H5 on previous test drives, we had high expectations for the brand’s latest lavish offering.

Exterior

Our first impression was that the designers applied the now familiar design concept of the HONGQI family DNA while managing to endow the four-door luxury saloon with a personality all its own. At the front end, a bold chrome grille with 12 vertical rods announces the car’s arrival, with the striking red line HONGQI logo running from halfway down the bonnet, to the centre point of the prominent grille. This feature is flanked by angular LED headlights and sleek, vertically stacked fog lamps. At the sides, the considerable length of the Ousado is underscored by the flawlessly sculptured body lines. Measuring no less than five metres and with a wheelbase close to three metres – this is no small saloon. Further adding to the luxurious appeal exuded by this first-class car are the 18-inch HONGQI customised alloy wheels, the shark fin radio antenna, the high-quality door handles and the red HONGQI badges near the front doors. Shifting our attention to the back end, we instantly noticed the cross-through rear light that bestows this model with

a real sporty feel. This undertone of athleticism is further enhanced by the chromed dual-exhaust pipes neatly integrated into the rear apron.

Interior

Upon keyless entry, we were welcomed by a perfect blend of space, comfort, aesthetics and technology. The supportive, Active Motion front seats with lumbar control and memory function provided the perfect vantage point from which we could fully appreciate the effort put into creating a luxury vehicle of this standard.

During the day, the panoramic sunroof provides plenty of natural light while at night, the ambient interior lighting helps to create a relaxing yet lavish environment – both revealing the mastery of the cabin’s design.

No matter where we looked, our eyes were met by high-quality materials, finishes, and trims. All seating throughout the vehicle features temperature control, along with bespoke thread-work that looks to be hand sewn. Thanks to the ample length of the vehicle, rear-seat passengers can enjoy almost a full metre of leg space. Adding to the comfortable and convenient nature of the Ousado are the multi-zone climate control and power windows. The Ousado’s largest-in-class luggage compartment features a power rear liftgate and provides 573-litres of storage, a capacity that can be greatly increased with the rear seats folded down.

Infotainment & Technology

This latest offering from HONGQI is not just a pretty face, it has been fully equipped with the latest technology to set it above its would-be competitors.

The responsive infotainment system is operated through a 12.6-inch, tablet-like display mounted on the centre console and a clean-looking digital cluster. This system is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Ousado is also fitted with wi-fi, AUX, hands-free, an SD Card, a USB connection and Bluetooth.

Further aiding the driver is the state-of-the-art Head-Up Display that provides information without eyes needing to be taken off the road.

Additional noteworthy features include the premium Dynaudio, 12-speaker sound system complete with subwoofer and the convenient wireless charging pad.

Performance & Safety

The all-new Ousado houses a high-performance, aluminium, 2.0-litre turbocharged engine coupled with an Aisin eight-speed automatic transmission. The potent powertrain produces 224hp and a maximum torque of 340Nm. We managed to push the new saloon from 0-100km/h in a respectable 7.8 seconds. Despite the power on offer, the Ousado delivers a fuel-efficient performance of 6.6-litres per 100km in Eco mode.

With four modes to select from – Eco, Comfort, Sport and Custom – the Ousado offers a versatile on-road driving experience. As we effortlessly cruised around Qatar, we appreciated the car’s acoustic technology that blocks out almost all exterior sounds, providing a relaxing environment to watch the miles soundlessly roll by.

HONGQI have included a full suite of driver assistance and safety features in their all-new offering. These include, but are not limited to, lane departure warning, blind spot sensor, tyre pressure monitor, a hill assist system, intelligent cruise control, collision avoidance, stability control, park assist, ABS brakes, brake assist, ISOFIX points, a built-in 360° camera and nine airbags.

Our Verdict

HONGQI are improving every year with their premium car offerings, and if the brand’s current trajectory is maintained, it will soon establish itself a global reputation of producing cars that are amongst the finest on the roads today. ✤

A NEW ERA OF FOLDABLE SMARTPHONE INNOVATION

FACT continues its quest to uncover the very latest and greatest gadgets, this time with the new Huawei Mate X3.

Design

The X3 boasts an elegant yet durable design, complete with an aluminium frame. It comes in two colourways – dark green vegan leather and black Feather-Sand Glass. This model is not only compact but ultra-light and ultra-thin. At 5.3mm unfolded, it’s the thinnest smartphone we’ve ever encountered.

Screens

When opened, the new X3 unfolded flat without a noticeable centre gap between the two symmetrical halves or an unsightly crease on the foldable panel. This is thanks to Huawei’s new advanced hinge mechanism allowing opening to various degrees for different situations and uses. The 6.4-inch 3D OLED exterior screen has a 1080p resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Although smaller than the previous generation, it features Kunlun Glass exterior protection and IPX8-rated water resistance – the first Huawei smartphone to boast this quality. The X3 also features an impact-resistant, 7.85-inch foldable OLED screen. It provides an ultra-high resolution of 2496 x 2224, along with the highest pixel density in the industry at 426 PPI. This model also delivers a 120Hz refresh rate – 30Hz more than last year’s model. We appreciated the split screen feature of the X3, which allows the user to select between a vertical or a horizontal split.

Functionality

The international version of the Huawei Mate X3 runs EMUI 13.1 and features Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 hardware. We found the operating system fast and exceptionally responsive, experiencing no problem with lagging or picture quality. The stereo speakers at both ends add to the appeal with ample volume and pure sound. The X3 also comes with an impressive 256GB or 512GB of storage. The X3 supports Huawei mobile services. These include

Petal Search, Petal Maps and the App Gallery Store. You can still search for certain Google apps and download them through an app repository or a developer website. Huawei still has no access to 5G networks.

Cameras

Lovers of photography will appreciate the X3’s Ultra Vision XMAGE Camera system. This impressive setup includes a 50MP Ultra Vision Main Camera, a 13MP Ultra-Wide Angle Camera and a 12MP Periscope Telephoto Camera that supports 5x optical zoom. We found them all to capture excellent detail and trueto-life colours. For selfies, the 8MP front-facing camera in both the cover and inner screen proved more than capable. This smartphone also allowed us to take selfies with the rear cameras using the cover display as a viewfinder. The X3’s main camera, however, proved a cut above the rest in this area and can also record video in up to 4k resolution at 30fps, providing superb quality, fine detailing and vivid colours.

Battery

The sizable 4800mAh battery supports 66W wired Huawei SuperCharge and 50W wireless Huawei SuperCharge. This means ample power to last throughout the day. We managed to recharge the X3 from 0–70% in just half an hour.

Our Verdict

The new Huawei Mate X3 is a beautifully designed, capable smartphone proving to be a game-changer in the premium flip phone segment. ✤ GO: VISIT HTTPS://CONSUMER.HUAWEI.COM/QA/ FOR MORE INFORMATION.

Before moving to Banyan Tree Doha, your career had been in Central and South America and the Caribbean. Why did you decide to come to the Middle East?

As a Venezuelan with a deep appreciation for the region, I thoroughly enjoyed my time working in those extraordinary locations. However, after over 20 years in the hospitality industry in Mexico, I yearned for a new and exhilarating challenge. When the opportunity arose to bring my experience with Banyan Tree to another level in the fast-growing city of Doha, I couldn't resist. The timing was particularly exciting as I took over the role shortly before the World Cup.

Being able to contribute to the development of the first Banyan Tree property to open in the Middle East is an incredible privilege. The opportunity to be at the forefront of the brand's expansion into the region is both a professional milestone and a personal source of pride. I am thrilled to be working alongside a passionate and talented team, dedicated to showcasing the best of Banyan Tree's renowned service and creating unforgettable moments for our guests in this rapidly evolving destination.

THE MONEY MAMA

Malu Marsault is the founder of female-focused financial movement This Mama Invests, the first company in the GCC to help women create generational wealth. We decided to find out more.

Please tell us a bit about This Mama Invests – what is it and how did it come about?

In March of 2020 I found out I was pregnant, just a couple of days after the hotel I was working for was closing to the public as it became a facility for Covid positive cases.

When I announced this unplanned pregnancy to my husband, he freaked out saying: “How did this happen?” “Is this true?” “What are we gonna do? We have no money!”

I hid in the toilet to cry it out. But then I realised I had two options. Do nothing and accept that money will be a source of anxiety and stress. Or take things into my own hands, understand how to improve my finances and start creating wealth. My husband and I don’t come from rich families. Quite the opposite, we both grew up with financial struggles and I had the feeling we were about to repeat history. That was exactly the moment when I said to myself: “Enough is enough. I’m gonna do whatever it takes to break this cycle.” At first, all I wanted was to make more money and not worry financially.

I started digging down and indulged on self-education and coaching programmes to learn all I could about wealth building. It was (and still is) a transformational journey because I quickly realised we were handling our money wrong. But at the same time, I realised most of us struggle financially because nobody teaches us about money. We grow up conditioned to follow the traditional path of going to university, finding a job, working for 30-40 years, saving our money in the bank and then retiring at 60. At school we don’t learn how to actually build wealth, all we know about money is learned from our parents or caregivers and so there are many financial struggles and money-limiting beliefs that are passed from generation to generation.

I was so in shock with all what I was learning that I decided to go to social media (especially TikTok) and started sharing what I was learning and this is how This Mama Invests was born. I felt it would be too selfish to keep this knowledge just to myself.

How did you educate yourself in this sector and become a certified ‘Money Coach’ – and what is a money coach?

I tapped into the power of self-education. I joined an investing course followed by a 12-month accelerator programme from Invest Diva that had a money coach certification. I also travel once a year to Florida to attend Funnel Hackers Live, the biggest digital marketing conference for entrepreneurs that have or are building their seven- or eight-figure business, to learn from world-class speakers and to network with high-net-worth individuals. Something really powerful I learned is that to achieve any results fast, you need to find a mentor that has already done it and learn the shortcuts. So, I started learning from multi-millionaire mentors like Kiana Danial, Kim Constable and took additional business coaching programmes from Dean Graziosi and Tony Robbins. Trying to figure everything out by yourself is literally a waste of time..

A money coach is basically someone that helps you get better with your money; helps you grow wealth and achieve your financial goals. I created my signature Wealth Creation System which focuses on six pillars (investing is only one of them). This system helped me create exponential growth and it's the system I use for myself and teach to my students. You can learn the exact breakdown of this system when you attend my free masterclass (www.thismamainvests.com/masterclass).

Your website says you built a USD100K investment portfolio in three years, is this really something anyone can do? Surely there must be restrictions?

Yes, I did it by applying my Wealth Creation System.

I started by investing in myself, I took a loan from the bank and invested over USD30,000 in high-level coaching programmes to learn about financial markets, digital marketing and building an automated digital business. I started increasing my income by doing affiliate marketing. We acquired two rental properties, started investing in the stock market making monthly contributions and re-investing my profits. I started tracking our expenses, understanding where our money was going and being mindful of our expenses. We established a will and recently have moved the registration of my company from France to a free zone in Dubai in order to pay less taxes. I work on my mindset every day, morning and evening and this is exactly how I think anyone can achieve any goal.

What would you say is the minimum amount a would-be investor needs to get started?

Most brokers nowadays don’t have a minimum amount to get started. Did you know that if you start investing only USD50 per month when your baby is born, by age 60 she will have USD1.8M by investing in a low-risk index like the S&P500? And what’s crazy is that the total contribution is only $36,050. Mind blowing, isn’t it? This is the power of compounding. Most people think that you need to be rich to start investing. This is a myth. Investing is not for the rich, it’s literally how you get rich, as long as you know what you’re doing. It is a must to build a strategy and only invest in assets that are in line with your risk tolerance and financial goals.

This is something I go into in further detail with in my free online masterclass How To Start Creating Wealth & Make Your Money Work For You.

You are particularly focussed on educating and empowering women around money – why do you believe this is so important? We women face a disadvantage when it comes to finances and investing. Over a lifetime, women tend to earn less than men, if we consider the wage gap as well as the fact that women tend to take more career breaks (motherhood, ailing parent, etc) which reduces our capacity to earn money. We also live longer than men which means we need more money in our retirement fund. So, we make less, we need more, and therefore we need to catch up. Taking control of our finances also gives us freedom to say yes to things we want to do and to say no to situations that aren’t serving us. The tricky part is that we tend to believe that we’re bad with money. Most of us grow up with a culture of shame around discussing money. A T. Rowe Price survey revealed that parents would rather talk about drugs than bring up finances with their kids and a BECU Finance and Parents survey found that the majority of parents aren’t talking with kids about money, 82% of them cite fear as a barrier to having the conversation. Other studies show that when money is discussed, the topics are usually different depending on the gender of the kid. Girls are taught to save their money and boys are taught to build wealth. This difference is also seen in the media. Starling bank in the UK did linguistic research analysing over 300 articles in magazines, and they uncovered huge discrepancies in the way that men and women are spoken to about money by the media. In women’s magazines, 65% of money articles define women as excessive spenders and advise them to limit, restrict and take better control of shopping ‘splurges’, and they’re then encouraged to maximise

their economic contributions through forms of thrift like saving small sums, earning small amounts or finding a means of financial support, like a parent. Or a husband.

On the other hand, men's articles talk more about being the breadwinner, increasing their income, investing and creating wealth. The financial confidence gap is real. Not being taught about money in the same proportion as men and not being educated on it is a disadvantage. This is the reason why, for instance, most women only apply to jobs when they feel they are 100% qualified while men apply when they feel they are 60% qualified. Or that married women take control of major financial decisions (like investing) only 27% of the time. Or that 60% of women don't negotiate their salaries.

Another shocking fact is the amount of research showing that women are actually better investors than men! And the reason lies at a biochemical level because testosterone is the hormone of overconfidence, which plays AGAINST you when it comes to investing because overconfident people take more risk than they can afford. We [women] tend to hold our assets for a longer period of time, and do more diligent research about a potential investment because we are more driven by building safe and solid, long-term financial security.

The moment I learned this I was mind blown. Because this means we women, really do have an unfair advantage and a huge untapped potential when it comes to money and investing.

The financial and investing space is male dominated and this is something that affects the likelihood of women towards investing. If you grow up seeing someone that looks like you doing a certain activity, you are more likely to think ‘maybe I can do that too’ whereas if you never see someone like you doing that certain activity, somehow, somewhere you might think ‘maybe that’s not for me’. Representation matters. And this is why I’m here! ✤

ITALIAN INSPIRATION

• CHEF IN FOCUS
We met with Enrico Crippa, Chef of the three-Michelin-starred Piazza Duomo in Italy, to find out more about his culinary journey and his new restaurant at Raffles Doha – ALBA by Enrico Crippa.

When did you first realise that you wanted to become a chef?

When I was a child, my grandfather was the person in the family who cooked the most. He always went to the local market, brought ingredients home and would always try something different. All the time he was showing me new ways of cooking. So, I realised I wanted to be a chef, like him. He was my hero.

You launched Gualtiero Marchesi’s restaurant in Japan. Your three-Michelin-starred restaurant Piazza Duomo – one of the 50 best restaurants in the world – is in Italy. Why did you choose Qatar for your next culinary adventure?

We – Head Chef Antonino D'Alessi and I – didn't choose Qatar. Qatar chose us. And it was the right moment. We always receive a lot of requests to open restaurants outside Italy. But we haven't felt comfortable with this before now. Then I turned 50 a couple of years ago, Piazza Duomo was going really well and we were ready to do something new, to explore something different and to take on a new challenge. We were sure that opening a new restaurant in Doha with an incredible hotel – Raffles Doha – was the right thing to do and a great challenge for us.

What inspired the restaurant’s name?

First of all, Alba is the home of Piazza Duomo. Secondly, alba means ‘sunrise’, but also ‘new beginning’, which is what we are doing here at Alba. And then there are the truffles. The town of Alba is in the foothills of northern Italy and is the home of the tartufo bianco d’Alba – a rare white truffle that’s one of the most sought-after delicacies in the world. Our menu includes a truffle-inspired section – I seriously recommend the Uovo al Tartufo. It’s a sunny-side-up egg with truffle, hazelnuts, anchovies and asparagus sauce. Finally, Alba is easy to say and easy to remember. [Enrico chuckles.]

What’s the concept behind your menu?

The idea behind the menu is to bring Italy here, from north to south, all of it. [Head chef Antonino D'Alessi tells us more.] Chef [Enirco] comes from the north, I'm from the south. The menu represents Italy, with all of its tradition, while keeping Chef’s clear and defined style and vision.

There are so many seating options for diners at ALBA by Enrico Crippa. If you were a guest, where would you sit?

There is no right answer to this, because it depends on the occasion. I love the main dining area, because it’s inspired by the arcades in Italian cities. [These beautiful arched, covered walkways are usually built in northern Italian cities, where it rains more. There are 53km of arcades in Bologna alone – Ed.] Arcades are where Italians can promenade, visit boutiques, bars and restaurants without getting wet! So, I love the atmosphere in this part of the restaurant. But if I wanted to eat a romantic meal, it would be the Romeo-and-Juliet balcony. And if I wanted to have fun with some friends or share secrets over a business lunch, I’d choose the Cellar. It’s private and quiet. Perfect. Personally, I don't eat in the kitchen at the Chef's Table, because I'm in the kitchen all day! [He laughs] But many people like to eat where the guys prepare, stress… They might see us create something new. It’s a fascinating place to eat!

Finally, if you could choose just one ingredient to cook with for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Rice! That’s my favourite ingredient. I’d either cook it in the Oriental way or in the risotto way or in salad… I love everything to do with rice. Our Risotto allo Zafferano e Ossobuco is a beautiful risotto with saffron and veal shank. I adore it. ✤

THE CULINARY COMMANDER

Sami Selmi, Chef De Cuisine at Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels, on kitchen discipline and his joy at producing fabulous food.

When did you first know you wanted to be a chef and what was it that drew you to this profession?

When I finished my university studies in tourism management, I could have gone for any area of hospitality, and I chose the field of food and beverage. I chose the kitchen because I felt my personality was suited to show my talent as a chef and to lead the team. I started cooking when I did three-month trainings in the kitchen when I finished my exams after each year of university.

I worked very hard in both hot and cold kitchens with big-name chefs like chef Alain Ducasse, who had two Michelin stars at that time, 2002-2003, at his restaurant Spoon. It was my first opening of a restaurant in the high-quality food and beverage sector. I learned many skills in the kitchen at that time and I was thirsty to learn more and more about the basics such as the mother sauces, butchery, different styles of cutting and knife work. I worked side by side with strong chefs from Italy, France and

• VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN

Germany; they helped me to love food preparation and to be patient to learn more about the culinary arts. The first thing that attracted me to being a professional chef is being able to prepare a beautiful meal with love and serve it to a guest. I see the happiness of the customer when he tries it and at that time you cannot believe how proud I feel. Another thing that drew me to this profession is the discipline. To be strong in the kitchen, the chef is the commander, like in the army.

The good chef needs to be always the first employee to arrive in the kitchen, to make sure everything is under control and there are no hazards from which mistakes can be made. The chef must always focus in the kitchen, teach the team and guide them. In that way the chef can create the consistency in his kitchen to achieve results which lead to the satisfaction of customers, bring awards and profit his company.

What is your role at Souq Waqif – are you involved in menu development and so forth and what is the most interesting part of your job?

I am in charge of all activities related to the kitchens for La Piazza, Shurfa and Argan restaurants, which usually includes creating menus, managing kitchen staff, ordering and purchasing stock and equipment, plating design, enforcing nutrition, safety and sanitation and ensuring the quality of the meals that are served in the restaurants.

I am involved in menu development as I work side by side with my executive chef to create and change the concept of the menus of the restaurants, adding new dishes and developing new cuisines to attract more customers and creating promotions like our business lunch. I also receive the feedback of guests to implement improvements.

After 20 years of experience in the kitchen, the best part of my job is teaching other chefs what I have learned from my knowledge of food production to HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) and kitchen management. I feel as if I have a message to pass to the next generation.

What three tools do you always have in your kitchens?

Actual material tools: knife, cutting board and pan. Non-material tools: focus – it’s very important to focus in the kitchen to avoid mistakes; discipline – respect for the kitchen hierarchy; and spices – the basics of good flavour.

What is your signature dish and what makes it special/ popular?

My signature dish is the mixed grill for two prepared with charcoal smoke and special marination. It is our best-selling dish and is popular as people like to see the smoke coming out from the special grill pot which produces a great flavour. Customers have even started to take videos of the cooking to share on social media. ✤

A CULINARY ADVENTURE

Luke Bennett discovered authentic Greek flavours and hospitality at OPA.

Visiting OPA, at The St. Regis Doha, isn’t just another high-end dining experience: it’s a complete immersion in Greek culture. From food to hospitality, entertainment to décor, guests will be joyfully whisked off to the Mediterranean to revel in the wonders of Greek life.

The journey starts with the cleverly designed pathway to the restaurant, where diners are met with the iconic image of tiled floors, walls draped in vibrant foliage and a scattering of symbolic statues. Turning the final corner, reveals a breathtaking, angelic mural adorning the ceiling that runs alongside the stylish, open bar – a truly remarkable feature depicting the antiquity of Greece. The impressive décor was matched by the warm, friendly greetings from all staff members as we took our seats. The passionate General Manager, Anastasios, joined us to enthusiastically explain the concept of OPA: to welcome diners into their ‘home’, providing a holistic Greek experience.

As we rejoiced in the upbeat ambience, the cold appetisers arrived. Food isn’t just delivered to your table; it’s celebrated and served by skilled waiters. Apostolos, the cooking showman, exuded a true sense of pride for both Greek food and his craft. With a beaming smile, he prepared OPA hummus. Starting off as a normal bowl of hummus, he weaved in many ingredients to add the ‘OPA’ touch. Harissa paste and feta (sourced from Greece) added a pleasurable depth of flavour while sprinkles of pine nuts and dried lamb provided a wonderful textural element. We are big hummus fans (who isn’t?), yet we were pleasantly surprised by these unique and elevated twists.

A more traditional bowl of refreshing Tzatziki proved a perfect accompaniment to smother across warm, crispy segments of pita. Bringing vivid colour to the table was a Greek Salad – a fresh

mix of vegetables permeated with olives, capers and smooth, generous chunks of feta, harmonised with an oregano vinaigrette. The final cold starter was an elegant mound of Tuna Tartare. Diminutive cubes of blue fin tuna encompassed the palatepleasing, intriguing flavour of black truffle, paired with a fresh ‘hit’ of yoghurt and a satisfying snap of small koulouri discs. All of which made for a mouthful of remarkable tastes and textures. Onto the hot appetisers and first up was a refined Homemade Pie - an elongated parcel of thin, flaky filo encasing a flavoursome filling of leeks and spinach. This tasty dish was enhanced further with a topping of delightfully smooth feta mash and fresh sprigs of dill. The final appetiser, Prawn Saganaki, demonstrated the skilful art of balancing flavours and mouth feel. The voluptuous prawns were expertly prepared, juicy and firm, and crispy crotons gifted a pleasurable crunch. However, the sumptuous sauce ‘stole the show’ with a sensational depth of flavour, combining the sweetness of tomatoes with a pleasant level of spice and a touch of creaminess from crumbled feta.

Still spooning the remains of the Saganaki sauce, stacks of empty plates were placed before us. They hadn’t run out of food; instead, it was time to rejoice in the tradition of plate smashing. Jubilant cries of ‘Opa’ reverberated around the restaurant as guests and waiters joyfully tossed their plates in the air. The music ramped up bringing further energy while the staff put on an enjoyable show of the customary Zorba dancing. The dancing isn’t just for the staff; diners are also encouraged to join in the celebrations. This isn’t just a tokenistic act, but evidence of OPA’s vision to provide every guest with the authentic Greek experience. Get involved – it was a lot of fun!

Having worked up more of an appetite, we returned to indulge in yet more delectable dishes. Firstly, Wagyu Souvlaki was a stylish arrangement of thinly sliced, succulent Australian beef sat on a

bed of smooth cauliflower puree. Expertly grilled, the fibres of this exceptional meat were so tender they hardly needed chewing, and a delightful tang was offered by the scattering of capers. Another example of the extraordinary preparation of meat was Kleftiko. After being slowly braised, the lamb shoulder is pulled and pressed into a terrine-like shape then lightly fried, resulting in a moist interior and a delicious, crispy exterior. The flavoursome lamb, creamy feta mash and pungent olive jus created a forkful of mouth-watering food. The final main course - OPA Mousakawas a surprising take on the classic dish. A base of silky potato terrine, lightly wrapped in crumbly filo made for a flavourful case for the gooey filling. A rich blend of braised beef short-rib, spiced aubergine and kasseri cheese oozed from the centre and was elevated with a complex, burnt onion jus.

Why not end your evening with yet more smashing? The OPA Sundae is a dish that delivers in both amusement and taste! Take your spoons and blissfully demolish the filo shell to reveal an assortment of velvety ice creams and sweet, crunchy chunks of baklava. The cool, creamy sensation of the ice cream perfectly complements the flaky, crumbling textures of the pastry.

OPA’s attention to detail and desire to showcase Greek culture at its finest provides a truly unique offering in Doha’s every-growing gastronomic scene. The food is exceptional. The hospitality is dynamic and friendly and the memorable experience is a reminder that dining is more than just great food; it is a celebratory event to be enjoyed with family and friends. We certainly felt like part of the OPA family! ✤

SPORTS, ATMOSPHERE AND GREAT FOOD

Hannah Nesbitt found that Champions Sports Bar ticked all the boxes.

If you’re looking for a lively hotspot in Doha that will meet all your needs for an entertaining night out, look no further than Champions Sports Bar at the Marriott Marquis City Center Doha Hotel. This is the ultimate destination for sports enthusiasts and socialites alike. With a recent menu re-launch, get ready to be blown away by the unbeatable food deals, live entertainment and quiz nights, which will give you something to look forward to, all week long. Located in the heart of West Bay, this is the ideal spot to kick back, relax and enjoy the company of friends whilst indulging in some top-quality food and drinks.

Sports shirts and paraphernalia are on show to give that real, sports bar feel. And, with numerous TV screens dispersed throughout the venue, you will get the best possible view and never miss a moment of your favourite sporting event. The seating is organised to give an optimum view of the screens, whether that be within the cosy booths, perched on high stools or taking in the action at the raised table areas. The down-to-earth, friendly staff are welcoming, fostering a truly laid-back ambience. Popcorn was offered in individual snacksized boxes, while we perused the vast menu. The food on offer is a combination of high-end, gourmet bar food using top quality, fresh ingredients as described by Chef Syed. Kicking off with a sharing starter of dynamite prawns and the classic Cobb Salad. Each element of the carefully sliced salad offered unique and powerful flavours, none overpowering the other. The flame grilled, gem lettuce was the perfect bed for the expertly poached egg, which had been cooked using the sous vide technique. The combination of crispy bacon, juicy tomatoes

and punchy blue cheese, topped with a ranch sauce was simply delicious. The dynamite prawns were stacked carefully in a serving glass. The crunchy tempura batter covered the large, succulent prawns, whilst the sweet, yet spicy sauce added another dimension to the dish. The starter was neither too heavy nor filling, allowing plenty of room for the sizeable mains to follow.

To cleanse the palate between courses a frozen berry smoothie was wonderfully refreshing and crisp, topped with fresh raspberries.

The main courses packed plenty of punch and were any meat eater’s dream. The half rack Angus Beef ribs was an impressive sight to behold. The meat had been slow cooked to perfection and came away from the bone at the touch of the fork, falling away to display the chunks of marbling. To further complement the dish was a homemade, tangy barbecue sauce. The rich meaty flavours, crunchy coleslaw salad and salty fries made for a hearty and satisfying meal.

Another staple in any pub grub menu is the Surf and Turf. A quality cut, ribeye steak and six shell on jumbo prawns garnished with delicate pink flowers and coriander were presented in their simplistic glory on one plate. The wellseasoned steak was tender and had been cooked, upon request, to a medium level, which showed in the charred exterior and pink, juicy inner. The prawns provided the most mouth-watering, garlicky goodness. This simple yet luxurious

meal was skilfully executed with its distinct and bold flavours. Should these dishes not pique your interest, the menu also features a range of other options including sharing platters, wings, sliders, nachos, sandwiches and burgers. With such a diverse selection, you’re sure to find something that caters for your taste preferences.

Upon the recommendation of Johnson, the everaccommodating bar manager, we sampled the newest menu additions. What better way to get into that sports bar vibe, than with a beloved American favourite, New York Cheesecake, and an apple cobbler. With their own take on the traditional, comforting, apple cobbler, this dish, served warm, was both gooey and delicious. The smooth apple filling was topped with a golden brown, buttery crust. The firm yet wonderfully creamy cheesecake, with a crumbly crust was carefully decorated with colourful summer fruits, including strawberries, blackberries and blueberries. Whether you’re a die-hard sports fan or just looking for a fun and sociable place to chill after a day at work, Champions certainly meets all these requirements and more. ✤

TOTALLY TASTY AND SUPERBLY SOCIAL

• FOODIE CORNER
Laura Morris discovered the perfect combination at Brewskis and Grub.

Wandering in, it was immediately evident that Brewskis and Grub, at Crowne Plaza Doha West Bay, was a warm and inviting place. A one-stop destination for eating, chilling, socialising, partying or watching a sports match, and a great social space to catch up with friends. Perhaps you could even do all of these things here in one night!

Not dissimilar to a bustling American bar, the extensive weekly events lineup includes live music, theme nights and, of course, regular and popular Happy Hours with special offers and bargain prices.

Ambient lighting created a cosy atmosphere and it was clear that everyone was enjoying themselves after a busy day. We perched ourselves in a corner, on a long, high table, perfect for a larger group, and could see how this casual social setting was ideal for meeting new people.

As we waited for our food, chilled music played an eclectic mix of favourite hits, bringing an air of familiarity to our visit. The whole place felt homely: the exposed brickwork brought an element of rustic charm, as did the mixed collections of memorabilia and modern artworks that adorned the walls. This casual vibe was perfect for a relaxed evening out and the chilled dress code meant that you could dress up or down, depending on your mood. Our first sample from the menu was the Fresh Guacamole and Roasted Salsa, which arrived very promptly. The guacamole was creamy and flavourful, with a perfect balance of avocado, tomatoes, onions and cilantro. The roasted salsa was smoky with a nice kick of heat. The accompaniment was homemade tortilla chips – perfect for scooping up every last drop of the dips!

FOODIE CORNER •

We quickly realised that the menu was both vast and varied, with something to suit every palate or mood. Brewskis’ offerings are generally a mix of Mexican and Californian dishes, with some modern twists and family favourites. They also have a wide selection of vegan options, proving they adapt to the everchanging demographic of people here in Doha. During our visit, we sampled a range of popular dishes, each of which was a personal recommendation from the chatty and knowledgeable staff. When our food began to arrive, we quickly learned that it was designed to be shared: the portions are super generous, so arrive hungry! With so many dishes to try, I've included some popular choices and our favourites from the night. Setting the tone for things to come, was the Brewskis Salad. A refreshing and healthy option, with fresh greens, roasted red peppers, spiced feta cheese, kalamata olives, sundried tomatoes, pine nuts and dried cranberries, all dressed with a sweet honey vinaigrette. My perfect kind of salad, the creaminess of the cheese balanced the sweetness of the peppers and oozed freshness. Served up alongside was the Buffalo Chicken Dip. Imad, Brewskis' American-born owner, told us this dish is inspired by one of his favourite dishes to share with friends. A real crowd pleaser, the dip is creamy from the cheese and packs a warm kick of heat from the buffalo sauce.

The biggest surprise of the evening was the Smoked Avo Tuna Tartare. Served elegantly, this dish has both style and substance. The tuna was fresh and flavourful, and the smoky aroma it arrives with adds a pleasing touch. The avocado base was creamy and rich and the tostadas provided a contrasting crunch with every scoop. This dish is sure to please even the most sophisticated of palates and would not be out of place in the finest of establishments.

Next to sample was the El Diablo Shrimp Tacos. These are crafted with cabbage slaw, cubed avocados and sour cream served inside a soft tortilla with, of course, the main ingredient, fresh shrimp. The shrimp was cooked to perfection, still soft and packed full of flavour. Chunky salsa is served on the side but, take it from me, pour the whole lot on as it really brings some freshness and heat to a dish that we really enjoyed.

Our favourite dish of the night? Without a doubt, the Asian Chicken Wings. The menu warns you that they’ll take 20 minutes as they’re prepared to order. All I can say is, it's worth the wait! Imad let us in on the secret to their crispy coating: these wings are not fried, but rather baked and then grilled! Not only does this make them a healthier choice, but it’s clear this technique adds a whole new level of deliciousness. We picked them up and ate them with our hands, they were too moreish to worry about sticky fingers! The sweet and viscous Asian-style marinade had a satisfying tang and we gnawed the bones dry. As full as we were, there's always room for something sweet, and the Brewskis Cookie Monster did not disappoint. This dish is worthy of the hype! A delicious and decadent dessert: the cookie dough is baked until crisp in a mini skillet pan and served with lashings of ice cream, chantilly, chocolate and caramel sauces and crushed nuts. The cookie itself was sweet and crisp, while the rich, indulgent ice cream is the perfect way to cool things down. This dessert is sure to satisfy even the sweetest of teeth! If that wasn't enough, we paired this with a Mexican classic: churros. Mouth-wateringly crisp and sprinkled with a generous dusting of

sugar and cinnamon, these churros were the perfect end to our evening, and we left full and excited to come back for more. Our visit taught us that Brewskis and Grub is a great place to not only enjoy a meal with friends or family, but somewhere to be social and join in on the action. There was a buzz in the air: a warm and inviting atmosphere, delicious food and excellent service. I would definitely recommend a visit to anyone looking for somewhere to hang out with friends and sample some of the best bistro grub Doha has to offer. ✤

Beef John Wick: Chapter 4

Need to Know:

Beef is a dark comedy-drama miniseries on Netflix that begins with a road rage incident between two strangers, a failing contractor and an unfulfilled entrepreneur. This sparks a tit-for-tat feud that leads to escalating acts of revenge that brings out their darkest impulses.

Director: Lee Sung Jin

Cast : Steven Yeun, Ali Wong, Joseph Lee, Young Mazino, Ashley Park, Justin H. Min

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Danny Cho (Yeun) is a failing contractor, who’s down on his luck, trying to get his business up and running, saving up to buy a plot of land for his elderly Korean parents, and, in the midst of all that, is also supporting his younger brother who’s obsessed with crypto and making fast money but doesn’t help Danny in any way.

On the other hand, there’s Amy (Wong) – a successful entrepreneur on the verge of closing a major deal and with a seemingly picture-perfect family. But she shares a strained and disconnected relationship with her husband George (Lee) who stays at home taking care of their daughter while indulging in pottery and meditation. Amy is caught up furthering her career and, in turn, sacrifices family time. One afternoon, as they’re both barely keeping it together, Danny and Amy unexpectedly nearly crash into each other in a parking lot. The butterfly effect of events that follow the disastrous encounter makes for some great television. The show boasts sharp writing and compelling character arcs that explore the various complex aspects of human nature in relation to issues such as unresolved anger, pride and vengeance, and how a nudge in the wrong direction could take your life down unforeseen paths.

Need to Know:

Everybody’s favourite hitman returns to the cinemas with the latest instalment in the John Wick franchise and this time it pulls no punches and leaves no ammo unspent. Still excommunicado but even more determined to take back his freedom regardless of the obstacles in his path, Wick is finally ready to exact his revenge against the High Table governing the underworld.

Director: Chad Stahelski

Cast : Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Ian McShane, Hiroyuki Sanada, Donnie Yen, Clancy Brown, Lance Reddick

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Initially planned as a one-off movie by director Chad Stahelski, previously Keanu Reeves’ stunt double on the Matrix movies, the John Wick series has come a long way from its humble cinematic start. The latest picks up from where John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum left off. After somehow surviving the massive fall off the Continental New York’s roof, John Wick has recovered while hiding underground and has been preparing to exact revenge against the High Table. He travels to Morocco and kills the Elder, the ‘one who sits above the Table’, setting in motion the events of this movie, which, like the previous one, is brimming with non-stop action — fun and entertaining. But this time around, the film manages to do more as it captures some standout cinematography on several occasions as Wick finds himself in breathtaking scenes set in Tokyo, Berlin, Paris and New York. Four movies in and despite all the carnage, the underlying message has stayed the same – don’t be terrible to people – you never know the difficult time they could be going through, and, most importantly, be nice to dogs.

ON THE RECORD

ALTERNATIVE/INDIE, FOLK Everything Harmony

The Lemon Twigs are an American rock band formed by brothers Brian and Michael D'Addario. Everything Harmony is their fourth studio album released via Captured Tracks.

The LP offers a variety with slow-paced, melodious numbers and faster beats. However, there’s a certain softness to all the songs, partly rendered by the quality of the vocalists’ voices and partly by the acoustic guitar – a major element; drums and cymbals, tambourines, the electric guitar also feature.

Songs such as Corner of My Eye and Any Time of Day showcase the artists’ vocal range with parts alternating between high and even higher pitches. The opening track When Winter Comes Around features bass vocals – just brilliant!

Exploring a wide range of emotions –melancholia, nostalgia, desire, yearning, hopefulness, love, disbelief, confusion… the lyrics signal possible vulnerability, something listeners can effortlessly resonate with.

On Every Day Is the Worst Day of My Life, the title repeats in a loop, creating a meditative mood. As such it stands out from the other songs.

The title track Everything Harmony features the piano, giving church-choir vibes. Elevated on sections by the crisp and complex violin and the rich and vibrant cello, it’s quite different to the rest of the album. Every creation offers something distinct to enjoy, making it a pleasure to listen to.

DANCE/ELECTRONIC

The Love Invention

Alison Goldfrapp is an English musician and record producer. She is popular as the vocalist of Goldfrapp, the English electronic music duo, and has also collaborated with other artists. Now, she has released her solo album The Love Intention – at the age of 56, proving that age is no bar – through Bertelsmann Music Group. She describes it as her tribute to the dancefloor.

It’s difficult to marry a genre like electronic dance, which is futuristic sounding, even robotic, with the concept of love – an emotion. However, this artist does it with ease and panache. The opener Never Stop, a catchy, foot-tapping number is a repeated reminder to ‘Never stop love, never stop loving’.

Love Invention explores an unprecedented experience. She wonders ‘Is this real or not?/ And I've never had a love/ That felt so good’.

On Digging Deeper Now, she peels off layers to understand the feeling called love, which has changed everything and breathed ‘life back into’ her; she knows she’ll ‘find a way to the heart’.

The album unravels many such nuances of the emotion. It’s worth mentioning that it’s not just the lyrics but also Alison’s voice that lends a dreamy feel to the songs. She is rightly known for her versatile vocals; on this LP, featuring synthpop, trance tunes, drum and bass and electronic elements of all kinds, it shines through.

SATIRE/HUMOROUS FICTION Girlfriend On Mars

A novel very much of our age, this debut offering provides futuristic fun with a satirical look at humanity’s pursuit of fame in the face of environmental crisis, and we love the premise.

Amber Kivinen leaves her humdrum boyfriend of 14 years, Kevin, and joins a reality show where, among an assortment of science nerds, would-be influencers and others, she is competing for the chance to join the first human mission to Mars. Meanwhile Kevin is glued to the telly trying to work out why his one true love is so determined to leave the planet.

CRIME THRILLER Zero Days

Described by the New York Times as the ‘new Agatha Christie’ we’re very excited about this latest offering from Ruth Ware. Security experts Jack and husband Gabe are hired by companies to break into buildings and hack security systems. But after a routine assignment goes horribly wrong, Jack arrives home to find her husband dead and she’s the prime suspect. A heart-pounding mystery unfolds as she goes on the run and tries to clear her name while drawing ever closer to the real killer – with all the danger that implies.

Digital Dilemma Sassy Seagulls You Cannes Not Be Serious!

Kate Winslet, the Leading Actress award winner, teared up during her BAFTA acceptance speech as she dedicated her victory to her real-life daughter, Mia Threapleton, who also plays her reel-life teenaged kid in I Am Ruth , a stand-alone drama for which Kate was nominated. to help her daughter deal with the effects of social media. Kate implored the ‘people in power’ to criminalise harmful content. She also encouraged young people to ask for help, stressing that there’s no shame in it. third European Seagull Screeching Championship. Around 50 participants were judged for their renditions of the bird’s cry, with 15 points allotted for the cry itself and five points for behaviour –of the participant not the seagulls. The event aimed at getting more sympathy for the birds as they are, after all, part of the coast. We agree! Humans don't have any more right to be on earth than other species do.

herself attending past festivals where she is elegantly dressed, fitting for an event of such a scale but nothing over the top or attention-seeking. Quick research on Cannes in the ‘90s or even the 2000s shows things were saner back then. While we can begin to understand the Met Gala’s fashion atrocities, we believe it's important to preserve the sanctity of the Cannes festival and honour it for what it is – a tribute to films and filmmaking.
