A City Of Art

“To send light into the darkness of men’s hearts – such is the duty of the artist.” – Schumman “

Art means different things to different people. I have to admit that high art and abstract, much like scat jazz, are sometimes baffling to me and I pretty much think of art in terms of, if I like it, then it’s good in my eyes. But there’s no doubt that art is important. Whether a picture on a wall, a beautiful poem or piece of music, a thought-provoking film or maybe even an eye-catching piece of graffiti, art can soothe the soul, make us think or simply take us away from the stress of everyday living for a few minutes.

The art scene in Qatar is amazing. The Government is super supportive – just look at the diversity of public art scattered around the country – and the population, both Qataris and expats alike, is hugely engaged. In this month’s cover story, we take a look at just a fraction of what’s on offer and chat to some of those involved.

Our second big feature is for those who are staying in Qatar with kids over the school holidays. We’ve done a huge roundup of summer camps offering everything from taekwondo to ballet and from art to coding. Facing summer in the city? We’ve got you covered.

In our Dining Section, we check out a fabulous afternoon tea at The Courtyard, feast on delicious Indian fare at Qalamkarri and sample sumptuous Thai cuisine at Benjarong. We’ve also got plenty of dining deals for you to try. And make sure to read about our mini-break at Millennium Place, a fun time in the heart of the city.

This month’s test drive was a bit of a treat, behind the wheel of the Porsche Panamera Manufacturer Edition, a thing of great beauty of which I was more than a little jealous. But I was happy to have the chance to chat with musician Kayyca, which kinda made up for it.

We also have our usual roundups of news from the worlds of motoring, tech and fashion as well as lots of happenings around town.

Whatever you do this summer, stay cool.

LAST CHANCE TO CATCH LATIN AMERICAN ART EXPO

In partnership with the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (Malba), Qatar Museums is showcasing the first large-scale exhibition of Latin American art in the WANA (West Africa and North Asia) region at the National Museum of Qatar.

Featuring paintings, photographs, films, sculptures, installations, textiles and elements of popular culture, LATINOAMERICANO | Modern and Contemporary Art from the Malba and Eduardo F. Costantini Collections presents a compelling overview of Latin America’s artistic production from 1900 to the present.

Through more than 170 artworks drawn from the collections of the Museum of Latin American Art Buenos Aires (Malba) and its founder, Eduardo F. Costantini, the exhibition captures the continent’s creative evolution while re-examining its art within critical and regional art historical frameworks.

Rather than following a chronological or geographical order, the exhibition is organised into six thematic sections. These explore Latin America’s shared natural landscapes, plural identities, urban development, moments of societal change and the processes of artistic emancipation that have emerged over time.

This structure invites visitors to reflect on the key ideas, debates and preoccupations that have shaped the region’s modern and contemporary art.

By synthesising the connections between regional movements

while preserving their distinct characteristics, the showcase highlights diverse thematic, formal, material and conceptual approaches across the continent.

Highlights include a stunning self portrait by artist Alice Rahon from 1951, El circo más lindo del mundo (The Most Beautiful Circus in the World) by Rafael Barradas, a watercolour painted in 1918, and the atmospheric rendering of George Gershwin, An American in Paris painted by Miguel Covarrubias in 1929.

The exhibition is curated by María Amalia García and Issa Al Shirawi.

This exhibition is presented as part of the Qatar-Argentina-Chile 2025 Year of Culture, with special thanks to the Years of Culture National Committee and the many private and institutional lenders for their generous support.

The exhibition runs until July 19 and entry is free. ✤

Space Tribe features Qatar’s largest ball pit, with more than 500,000 vibrant balls. Imagine diving in for sensory fun and free play for both adults and youngsters. Not surprisingly, this immersive playground has quickly become a favourite for visitors of all ages.

Crayons & Bricks delivers an equally engaging experience. Designed especially for children aged two to 12, the space combines creative play with interactive learning. Highlights include art stations with thousands of crayons and stencils, a climbing tower with a ball pit, brick building areas, clay workshops, edible art activities, face painting,

live caricature artists, digital graffiti walls and even claw machines with fun prizes.

These summer activations align with Doha Mall’s mission to be a community-focused hub where every family feels welcome. By offering dynamic entertainment options for children while parents shop or dine, the mall wants to ensure everyone feels a sense of belonging.

Families looking for the perfect weekend or holiday outing can now enjoy these new experiences alongside Doha Mall’s growing retail and dining offerings. ✤

ART FOR ART’S SAKE

"Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." – Pablo Picasso

Art touches the soul in a way few other things can. Catching sight of a beautiful painting or hearing a haunting piece of music can stop us in our tracks. Art can transform a tough day, imparting a sense of wonder or awe and making us think – taking us out of our own, often crowded, headspace, even if for a few moments.

Bearing that in mind, those lucky enough to live in Qatar should really have some of the most untroubled souls around, since the country is a veritable mine of amazing art and artists, from largescale public installations to those producing films, music and theatre. Read on to learn more.

Art On Arrival

There’s nothing like setting out your artistic credentials from the get-go and Qatar certainly does that, welcoming travellers to Hamad International Airport (HIA) with numerous fun pieces as if to say ‘hello, you’ve arrived, we’ve been expecting you’. Of course, everyone knows Urs Fischer’s Teddy Bear, the 23-foottall, yellow teddy bear sitting inside a lamp, which has become a world-famous symbol of HIA. But now there’s a new fun

installation to keep your eyes open for.

Wildlife Wonderscapes is a permanent collection of interactive sculptures by renowned artists Gillie and Marc, featuring a whole group of bronze animals engaged in various activities.

Including native species and threatened animals, the pieces reflect Qatar Airways Group’s dedication to wildlife conservation and highlight the importance of protecting endangered species – art with a message.

Hamad Ali Al-Khater, Chief Operating Officer at HIA, said: “Airports are places of movement, connection and reflection. Wildlife Wonderscapes encourages engagement with our passengers making every journey memorable and greatly adds to the diverse iconic art curated across Hamad International Airport.”

Among the exhibition highlights is the 3.5m x 10.5m Wild Table of Love in Doha, which is made of six tonnes of bronze featuring a scene of native and endangered animals gathered around one table – a symbol of shared space and coexistence. Other works include a 10m sculpture named They Were on Wild Ride in Doha, on a multi-creature bicycle!

Look out for them in The Orchard next time you’re passing through.

CINESCENE

You’ve heard of Bollywood and Nollywood, but can we say Qollywood? OK, maybe that’s pushing it a bit but there’s not doubt Qatar’s movie makers are thriving. There are several world-class studios, as well as plenty of smaller independents. We take a look behind the scenes.

About Cinema

This series on Al Jazeera Arabic features local actors and film makers and celebrates the art of filmmaking and the craftspeople both in front of and behind the cameras. It gives an insider’s view of what it’s like filming on the streets of the capital and elsewhere and has received several awards.

Abood Afro, one of the show’s stars, told us more: “The show started in 2019. The idea came from the producer and creator, Emadiddine Elsayed. He directed a lot of the episodes too. We filmed four seasons and won multiple international awards – the latest season has also just won an award.

“Filming on the street is difficult anywhere you go in the world. From getting permissions and paperwork to controlling the public and interferences. Filming on the street in Qatar in the earlier seasons was fun and not as challenging when it comes to public interference. Filming on the street in Istanbul was harder. People parking their cars in the middle of the set, construction starting randomly, people everywhere!”

Doha Film Institute (DFI)

The driving force behind much of the film making in the country, Doha Film Institute is an independent, not-for-profit cultural organisation. Founded in 2010, it’s all about powerful storytelling and meaningful creative exchange.

DFI supports filmmakers at every stage of their journey – offering funding, training and mentorship that helps bring bold, original voices to life. And there’re year-round programmes, connecting talent with the tools, knowledge and networks.

DFI hosts two major film festivals, Ajyal Film Festival and Qumra, and this year will see the launch of the first Doha Film Festival in November, with participation expected from across the globe.

The Independent

Maysaa Almumin is an architect and independent filmmaker. Her film work spans countries such as Kuwait, Italy, Egypt and Qatar, where she has developed a close creative relationship with the filmmaking community and with the Doha Film Institute. An awardee of the Arab Fund for Art and Culture and the Doha Film Institute, her film BintWerdan was in the official selection at the Malmo Arab Film Festival in Sweden and also at the Ajyal Film Festival in Qatar.

She told us: “It’s been incredible to watch the film scene in Qatar flourish and evolve simultaneously. The growth has taken shape in a few different spaces, from producing small films at grass roots level to institutionally supported larger budget feature films. Local independent filmmaking has grown with the support of major institutions and universities and, while the scene continues to be nurtured by these, it is not uncommon to find production houses eager to back independent filmmakers alongside their commercial projects. This means that the motivation and ambition of many filmmakers becomes very attainable.

“It’s a wonderful time to be a filmmaker in Qatar, as the small community comes together professionally and socially, the network grows and we become very involved in each other’s work. The growth is palpable and it is fast. We’re seeing a rise in various cultural and professional entities inviting filmmakers to give lectures and workshops, which is very encouraging, knowing that the scene is adjusting, finding its own roots and building an organic ecosystem of filmmaking activities.”

GREAT GALLERIES

Though the word ‘arts’ encompasses many mediums and genres, from music and dance to sculpture, when we say art, what many of us are actually thinking of is galleries displaying the creative output of those who put pencil to paper and paint to canvas. And, if that’s your bag, you’re in the right place because Qatar’s got more than its fair share of places to see everything from contemporary and modern to experimental, classical and Islamic art. These are our top three.

Fire Station

Housed, unsurprisingly, in a former working fire station, this is Doha’s leading contemporary art space and supporter of creative residencies. The building includes extensive studios and workspaces, a woodshop and a fabrication lab, alongside the Fire Station Cinema and gallery spaces housing local and international art exhibitions. Workshops and events here are always funky and fun.

Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art

Mathaf houses a unique world-class collection of modern and contemporary art from the Arab world and its cultural and historical connections. Co-owned by Qatar Museums and Qatar Foundation, the collection comprises more than 9,000 artworks, making it the world’s largest specialised collection of its kind.

As well as the regular collections, it hosts numerous visiting exhibitions, with three currently running through to August 9, and several weekly workshops.

Museum of Islamic Art (MIA)

Housed in one of Qatar’s most iconic buildings, MIA features masterpieces of Islamic art, including manuscripts, metalwork, ceramics, jewellery, woodwork, textiles, coins, precious stones and glass which are considered one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of Islamic arts. Exhibitions run throughout the year as well as workshops and a children’s summer camp.

The National Museum of Qatar also deserves a visit, not just for the displays but also the stunning architecture.

Education

And, if you fancy learning how to make your own art, you’re in the right place with organisations such as Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts, the Arab International Academy and IAID, right on the doorstep.

Michael B. Fajardo is a visual artist from the Philippines and the Head of Visual Arts at IAID (International Academy for Intercultural Development) in Qatar. With more than 12 years of experience teaching art to children, teens and adults in the country, he continues to play an active role in nurturing the local art community through education and practice.

He told us: "Qatar's art scene has grown tremendously in the past decade – fuelled by a deep respect for culture and a strong commitment to creative development. Institutions such as the Qatar National Museum, Katara Cultural Village, M7, Fire Station gallery and Mathaf, among others, provide valuable resources, platforms and opportunities for artists from various disciplines. As an educator and visual artist, I've seen firsthand how art empowers

individuals and connects communities. It's not just about aesthetics – it's a vital language of expression that encourages dialogue, identity and imagination in a rapidly evolving society."

MUSIC MAESTRO PLEASE

If there’s one thing we can, pretty much, all agree on arts-wise, it’s that live music gladdens the soul and, in Qatar, there’s no shortage of it.

Big-name visitors, such as Ed Sheeran, Michael Bublé and Travis Scott have made Doha a regular stopping off point on their concert schedules. And, from the east, we’ll be welcoming Filipino artists TJ Monterde and KZ Tandingan just this month while December Avenue will be making an appearance at World Music Festival alongside Indian singer Adnan Sami Events like the Formula 1 Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix and other major sporting competitions form great showcases for both local and international talent – who could forget that showstopping opening ceremony at the Qatar World Cup?

There are also regular happenings, such as 25N 51E Music Festival (electronic), The Backyard all dayers (live and loud) and the much-loved Rockaway Beach and RPM.

For lovers of classical and instrumental music, the ongoing series of orchestral Candlelight Concerts is a real treat as well as being a magical introduction to the genre for the uninitiated. Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra has its own cultural ambassador in the shape of Dana Al Fardan, who’s representing the country on the world stage and played a sold-out show at Katara Opera House earlier this year. And you’ll spot performances of traditional Arabic music at just about every public event.

Of course, none of these artists would be where they are today without support at the beginning of their careers and that’s where Music Lab from Qatar Museums comes in. Established in 2022, nurturing young local talent is its mission under the directorship of Dana Al Meer, who lent her voice to that amazing World Cup opener and who’ll be representing Qatar at Intervision, the international song contest, in Moscow later in the year.

Music Lab organises a variety of events, from stage musicals to concerts as well as collaborating with producers and composers

to get young talents into a space where they can create and workshops to develop their talents. Its members also take part in Ajyal Tunes, which runs alongside the Ajyal Film Festival.

Stuart Hart, of the band Under Construction, has been making music in Qatar for many years. He told us: “The music scene has developed a huge amount over the years I’ve been here. There were a few recognised venues that the expat bands would play at, but now there are a host of new venues and the number of expat bands has exploded. A lot of the bars have their own ‘house’ bands and many of the brunches have live music.

“A lot of bands are formed, have a burst of activity, and then fizzle out as members inevitably move away, but they’re soon replaced by another. A handful of bands have managed to survive through multiple line-up changes, Under Construction being one, and the other notable one being The Exiles. Both have been playing consistently for over 10 years. There is a well-developed Open Mic group now, and often that’s where musicians meet and make musical connections and bands are born.

“Nowadays you can find live music every night of the week if you just look around. Take a look at the Shamrock for starters. And the latest bar on the block that is really starting to develop a following is Bricks Bar in the New Blue Rose Hotel. Run by three brothers, who are themselves brilliant musicians aided and abetted by regular contributors whose talent is off the charts, leaning more towards the rock scene.

“In addition to all this there have been music festivals, starting with Rockaway Beach, and now RPM Festival. These have been staged over a weekend on an outdoor stage consisting of upwards of a dozen bands. So, music in Qatar, is very much alive and well!”

Music Lab Under Construction

THE WORLD’S A STAGE

From William Shakespeare to Tom Stoppard, and everything in between and beyond, can there be any of us who can’t think of at least one stage play – even if it’s in the form of a ‘film based on’?

Where would we be without the small of the greasepaint, the roar of the crowd?

In truth, there’s not a great deal of live English language theatre performance in Qatar, aside from Doha Theatrical Festival and the large-scale travelling shows that come to the big international venues we all love such as the Katara Amphitheatre and Qatar National Convention Center.

But, with 70 years of history, there’s one group that’s determined to change that. The Doha Players is a community theatre group that stages numerous shows throughout the year – with 83 productions, from comedy to panto, confirmed for 2026!

Representative Jonathan Tulip told us: “To be honest its challenging for both the public and visitors looking for live culture and for performers and creatives who want to make theatre and performance art.

“We have a huge range of performance spaces from 100 seats to 2,300 seats in Doha, but mostly these venues are not hosting performances.

“Before the doors can be opened for a few thousand people to watch a show, the show must be born, and this takes investment, time, space and creativity. An important goal that I’m working hard toward is to build a performing arts ecosystem here.

“We are also losing talent abroad which could be retained in-

country but is unable to find work in the arts. This being said, I wish all the best to everyone who has performed with us in the past and now finds themselves doing television or other performing arts abroad.

“Investment in the arts isn't a luxury – it's a growth strategy! Funding for performing arts creates jobs, builds culture, inspires people and contributes, in many cases significantly, to the growth of the economy.

“The artistic talent and innovative ideas we nurture act as rocket fuel for our creative industries.

“Every show produced, long before it gets to the theatre starts with a stage, a studio, a rehearsal room – and a belief that culture is worth investing in. I believe in the next few years we can create works that enable a performing arts sector and allow unique and authentic high-quality productions to be home grown in Qatar and not imported and even exported.

“THIS theatre in Al Thumama [home of Doha Players] has become the de-facto theatrical heart of Doha with the vast majority of public theatrical performances taking place there. We have some 83 performances scheduled for 2026. THIS theatre – is becoming Doha's West End!”

Doha Players is always on the lookout for new members.

ART FOR THE PEOPLE

From mega installations to Urs Fischer’s bear at Hamad International Airport, Qatar has an impressive collection of public art, much of which comes with a story. Check out these pieces that you might not have spotted yet or have maybe even walked right past without knowing their backgrounds.

Perceval

We know that Gulf Arabs, and particularly Qataris, love their horses – particularly the fine-boned Arabians with their slender faces and showy gait. So, it comes as a bit of a surprise to find the nation paying artistic tribute to a decidedly heavy horse. The gorgeous Perceval is a draft horse leading a cart containing giant marrows. He’s cast in cement to contrast with the finish of painted bronze and is creator Sarah Lucas’s only piece of public art. Said to be a tribute to British culture, Perceval is a replica of an ornament that once adorned many a mantelpiece in the UK, though his like is less common nowadays.

Head to Aspire Park and give his nose a rub but hold off on the sugar lumps.

Gandhi’s Three Monkeys

Gandhi’s Three Monkeys by Subodh Gupta captures attention in the heart of Katara. Tackling the challenging themes of war and peace, the three-part sculpture consists of three giant heads –one in a gas mask, one a soldier, another in a terrorist’s hood. They’re made of cooking utensils, used pails, traditional Indian lunch boxes and glass bowls and, though the terrorist could be somewhat confusing, they’re intended to represent Gandhi's famous visual metaphor – the three wise monkeys that 'see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil' in the proverb. Oversized and very impressive, they’re thought provoking and worthy of a visit.

The Challenge

If you head to Lusail Multipurpose Hall, you’ll spot a series of large bronze sculptures depicting larger-than-life hands reaching for the sky. Appropriate, since The Challenge, as they are named, was commissioned in 2015 to celebrate Qatar's hosting of the Men's Handball World Championships.

They’re by Iraqi artist Ahmed Al Bahrani who’s internationally famed for provocative large-scale sculptures, such as a guntoting Mother Teresa. His Qatar piece was certainly a challenge, against time. It was created and installed in just five months.

Qatar Museums has a comprehensive and regularly updated list of public artworks around the country and there’s even a map, should you fancy a tour.

HAUTE COUTURE ON WHEELS

fact spent a day in the Porsche Panamera Manufacturer Edition, a luxury saloon that embodies craftsmanship in tactile form.

They say you can’t have it all but the 2025 Porsche Panamera Manufacturer Edition certainly comes close. Collecting the keys to this hand-finished, hyperpersonalised machine, we expected Porsche refinement. What we didn’t expect was for it to charm us like a charismatic villain in a Bond film. From the moment we stood in its presence, we knew this wasn’t going to be just a drive, it was going to be a mind-altering experience.

Styled to Stand Out

To call the Panamera handsome would be an understatement. In this Manufacturer Exclusive Edition, it’s more like haute couture on wheels. The SportDesign Package painted in stealthy black highgloss reshapes the fascia and adds a sharper, more aggressive attitude. The Exclusive Design taillights and tinted HD Matrix LED headlights keep things distinctively Porsche but with an edge that’s all about craftsmanship. From the model designation in black to the side window trims and door handle inlays painted in body colour, the detailing is meticulous and undeniably bespoke. The 21-inch Panamera Exclusive Design wheels, painted in black with highly polished surfaces, are both aggressive and elegant, like a tailored suit with racing gloves. Paired with Exclusive Design taillights and silver sports exhaust tailpipes, this car looks ready to launch even while parked at valet.

Luxury Up Close

Stepping inside, we were immediately greeted by a sensory hug of Barrique Club leather – soft, deep and unlike anything in the standard lineup. This isn’t just leather, it’s craftsmanship in tactile form.

The interior presented an effortless blend of German precision and Gulf-style luxury – rich, detailed and built to impress. Thanks to the carbon matt interior package, every surface we touched, from the leather wrapped GT sports steering wheel, to the illuminated door sill guards, felt deliberate and indulgent. Even the air vent surrounds have been thoughtfully upgraded. The overall cabin layout is driver-focussed, but not lacking character. To us, it felt more like a first-class cockpit, suited for everything from fast-track straights to downtown traffic. We loved the Porsche crest on the headrests, a small but powerful reminder of the marque’s DNA, sitting right behind our perfectly positioned heads. The adaptive sports front seats are 18-way adjustable and offer the kind of support that says, “Take the long way home”.

Effortless Innovation

Whilst admiring the interior artistry, we noticed the Exclusive Edition model quietly flexing its tech muscles. The passenger display was a particular talking point, giving our designated co-pilot full command of media, navigation and much more. The true showstopper? The Burmester 3D High-End Surround Sound System that wrapped us in audio so immersive, it was like having our own private symphony on four wheels. It felt like we were listening to our favourite driving anthems for the first time. Of course, Porsche has equipped, as standard on all models, wireless smartphone integration, seamless connectivity, a

head-up display and a central display that feels more like a top-of-the-range tablet than a dashboard.

Pure Porsche Power

Now, let’s get down to business (Cue Tiësto).

Porsche has added a layer of focussed urgency to the Exclusive Edition’s drive, by including the Sports Chrome Package. It has paired this with Porsche Active Suspension Management and adaptive air suspension and, let us tell you, the power and precision are almost unbelievable!

We found the eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) gearbox as sharp as ever, responding with such finesse that we began to think it was reading our minds. Add the sports exhaust tailpipes into the equation and it sounds as fast as it feels, without ever being brash.

Despite revelling in the Panamera’s grand touring comfort, make no mistake, we found nothing soft about this car’s performance. It corners like it’s on rails and hit highway speeds with astonishing grace. Yet somehow, it never seemed to take any strain whatsoever. A truly otherworldly driving experience.

From the moment we stood in its presence, we knew this wasn’t going to be just a drive, it was going to be a mind-altering experience.”

Peace of Mind

Performance may be Porsche’s love language, but it also speaks fluent safety. Lane Change Assist, Surround View Active Parking Support and soft-close doors all come as standard, making city driving feel less like a chore and more like a mini privilege. More of a convenience than a safety feature is the 90-litre fuel tank that gives you range for days, even if those days include high-speed runs through open desert highways.

Final Thoughts

Now, don’t get us wrong, the standard 2025 Porsche Panamera is already a phenomenal car. With its sleek design, cutting-edge tech and signature Porsche performance, it easily holds its own in the upper echelons of the luxury saloon league. However, once you’ve experienced the Manufacturer Exclusive Edition, there’s simply no going back. It takes everything that’s great about the Panamera and elevates it into something far more personal, more indulgent and, frankly, more irresistible .✤

OPPORTUNITY TO OWN A MOTORING ICON

McLaren Automotive and McLaren Racing have announced an historic opportunity to own a 2027 McLaren Le Mans Hypercar.

In what could realistically be described as the chance of a lifetime, McLaren Automotive and McLaren Racing are collaborating to deliver the exhilaration of driving an authentic Le Mans Hypercar – a sensation that few will ever experience – to a select few, as part of the unique Project: Endurance customer partnership programme.

“In addition to owning the very latest LMDh race car, customers will enjoy unique, wholly immersive access to the development and racing programme that will underpin our 2027 FIA World Endurance Championship contender," said Nick Collins, CEO of McLaren Group Holdings. "Together with the associated track driving programme curated for Project: Endurance, this incredible opportunity delivers a new dimension in McLaren customer partnership.”

Like the World Endurance Championship LMDh Hypercar run by McLaren United AS, Project: Endurance will be powered by a race-built V6 twin turbo hybrid powertrain driving the rear wheels, and built in partnership with renowned race car constructor, Dallara, which is also the exclusive partner to the NTT INDYCAR Series.

Taking the customer Le Mans Hypercar ownership experience to a new level, McLaren brings Project: Endurance purchasers to the very heart of an elite motorsport development and testing programme. Customers will have full behind-the-scenes access to the upcoming McLaren Racing LMDh programme, key team personnel and drivers – and become a part of McLaren Endurance Racing’s story.

As well as owning the Project: Endurance car, the customers will be at the heart of the development programme for the McLaren Hypercar that will challenge for victory in the 2027 FIA World

Endurance Championship (WEC). They will also experience the euphoria of the 24 Hours of Le Mans that year, as part of McLaren’s campaign to again win the Triple Crown of motorsport (Le Mans, Indianapolis 500 and Monaco Grand Prix) – this time in a single season.

Inclusive to the Project: Endurance ownership experience, customers will enjoy a two-year McLaren customer track programme that encompasses some of the world’s best race circuits. They will benefit from support at track events each season, participating on an arrive-and-drive basis. Each owner will receive driver coaching from a race professional, with individual pit crew and race engineers supporting throughout. Further information about this unique collaboration between McLaren Automotive and McLaren Racing will be shared as the programme matures. ✤

DOGGONE IT

Fi Series 3+, the third generation GPS smart collar, is what your dog would choose if he could get his paws on a smart watch.

Described as ‘like an Apple Watch for your hound’, it can track your pet’s location, putting a curb to Fido’s potential wanderings. It also monitors health, sleep and steps – they say that if your dog’s fat, you’re not getting enough exercise, and now there’s no excuse.

Helpfully though, this new version of the gadget is integrated with AI features for more advanced habit tracking that can alert to issues such as licking, barking and scratching. It will let you know if your pooch is driving the neighbours nuts

with howling while you’re out and could potentially warn of unspotted health issues. Seriously waterproof, it’s designed with style and comfort in mind. And it’s the first Fi dog collar that fully supports the Apple Watch, so you can check your dog’s location – the company claims to have found almost 270,000 lost dogs – and activity right from your wrist. ✤

In Conversation with… Petr Pisecky

The General Manager of Hilton Salwa Beach Resort & Villas, Qatar, talks lessons learned and passions pursued.

You have almost 30 years’ experience in the hospitality industry – from waiter-apprentice to General Manager. What first attracted you to this sector?

When I first started my career as a waiter-apprentice, I was immediately drawn to the fast-paced nature of the hospitality industry and the opportunity to make a real difference in people’s experiences. I enjoy the sense of fulfillment that comes from providing exceptional service and creating memorable moments for guests.

Over time, I realised that the diversity and global scope of the industry offered endless opportunities for personal and professional growth. The chance to work in various countries and cultures, each with its unique challenges and rewards, made this sector feel like the perfect fit for me.

What would you say are the three most important lessons or pieces of advice you have learned or received over your long career?

Firstly, I’ve learned the importance of adaptability. The hospitality industry is ever-evolving, and being able to pivot and respond to

change is key to staying ahead.

Secondly, building a strong team is essential. Leadership is not just about giving direction but also about empowering people, supporting their growth and fostering a culture of collaboration. Lastly, always remain guest-centric. The foundation of our industry is providing exceptional service, and everything we do should be focused on enhancing the guest experience.

You have spent the majority of your career with Hilton Hotels. What is it about the brand that has kept you loyal and allowed you to progress within the company?

Hilton has always felt like home for me. The brand’s commitment to quality, innovation and guest satisfaction aligns with my own values and vision for hospitality. Throughout my career, I’ve been supported in my growth by Hilton’s strong focus on leadership development and its global presence, which has given me the opportunity to work across continents and cultures. Hilton’s emphasis on creating an inclusive and empowering work environment has been fundamental in fostering my growth. That,

combined with the company’s strong ethical values and forwardthinking approach, has made it an ideal place for me to continue my journey. I am a true believer in Conrad Hilton's vision to ‘Fill the earth with the light and warmth of hospitality’.

What makes Hilton Salwa Beach Resort & Villas stand out from the competition – what are you most proud of about the property?

Hilton Salwa Beach Resort & Villas is truly a destination within a destination. What sets us apart is the scale and variety of experiences we offer. From our 3.5-kilometre private beach to 361 unique accommodations that suit every type of guest, the resort is designed to cater to families, couples and groups alike. Guests can choose from well-appointed rooms and suites, charming Arabian-style townhouses and apartments, or luxurious beachfront villas with private pools.

We also offer an incredible mix of leisure and recreation. The award-winning eforea Spa provides a peaceful retreat for those looking to relax and unwind. For adventure seekers and families, Desert Falls Water & Adventure Park is a major highlight and one of the largest attractions of its kind in the region. Our sports academy and fitness facilities allow guests to stay active and make the most of their time with us.

Another key highlight is our diverse culinary offering. With over 10 restaurants spread across the resort and Desert Falls, along with additional food kiosks, guests are truly spoilt for choice. From Italian and Asian flavours to local and international favourites, there’s something to satisfy every palate. Dining with us becomes part of the experience, whether it’s a casual family meal or a more refined evening out.

But what I’m most proud of is the team. The genuine warmth, dedication and passion they bring to work every day are what

truly make a difference. They go above and beyond to create memorable experiences for our guests. I often hear feedback about how our team members made someone’s stay extra special and that, to me, is the greatest achievement. At Hilton Salwa Beach Resort & Villas, we’re not just offering a place to stay. We’re creating moments that guests will remember long after they leave. That’s what makes us stand out.

On a more personal note, can you share a secret talent or bucket list ambition that our readers would be surprised to know about you?

People who know me well know that I’m a huge sports fan, especially when it comes to football and rugby. I love both playing and watching them but I’ve also been actively involved in youth sports development in the destinations I’ve previously lived in; particularly Riyadh and Dubai.

I’ve always found it incredibly rewarding to see young kids grow and develop not only in their athletic abilities but also in their maturity, sense of responsibility and character. Through sport, they learn to respect the values and ethics of their teams and clubs; gaining invaluable lessons in teamwork and discipline.

One of my ambitions is to host regular youth sports tournaments and family days at our resort, which is perfectly suited for such events. Our sports facilities, combined with the wide range of leisure amenities available for both kids and families, make it an ideal setting.

As for my personal bucket list, one of my goals is to visit as many countries across all continents as possible and experience a wide variety of local cuisines. I believe food is a powerful gateway to understanding different cultures, and it’s something I’m deeply passionate about. That should keep me busy for many years to come! ✤

DEVELOPING THE HOSPITALITY STAFF OF THE FUTURE

Radek Cais, Multi-Property General Manager of Le Royal Méridien Place Vendôme and Agora Autograph Collection, speaks about a recent prestigious award and his pride in his associates.

You were recently awarded the title General Manager of the Year – Qatar at the Hotelier Middle East GM Awards, which recognises the leaders who are shaping the region’s hospitality sector. Please tell us what it means for you to receive this accolade.

This award belongs to our associates; it was an honour to bring it home to them.

Does this recognition impart a sense of responsibility in regard to your position in the industry and how are you building on this?

I have a sense of responsibility to help aspiring associates to grow their dreams and goals. My aim is that those individuals I help develop will be best-in-class. Strong leaders in our industry will help the sector directly.

I am also a part of the American Chamber’s Tourism Committee, supporting the further development of tourism to Qatar.

Le Royal Méridien Place Vendôme Lusail was also named among the Top 100 Luxury Hotels & Resorts in the World by Luxury Lifestyle Awards 2024 and both it and Agora have emerged as top performing properties. What is it about your leadership style that has precipitated this change?

Living Marriott International’s core values to the best of my ability: Put People First, Pursue Excellence, Act with Integrity, Embrace Change, Serve our World.

What can we look forward to from your properties in the future?

We have embarked on a journey of authenticated excellence; I will share when we get there.

If you had to pick one standout feature from each of the hotels, what would they be and why?

The key standout feature for both properties is the proximity to Place Vendôme Qatar. Le Royal Méridien Place Vendôme Lusail is connected to this seven-star mall and Agora, Doha, Autograph Collection Hotel is just across the street. The other standout for both properties has to be our esteemed associates.

On a more personal note, your career has spanned decades and continents, are there any funny or strange stories you can share with us from your experiences?

A story that spans the years and continents is one of learning. When I first moved to China from Canada, I relied on decision making based on the experience that I had, which was narrow as I had knowledge of working in just one country. Over my journey, I discovered the importance of adjusting or adapting to the styles and customs of the countries I reside in. For example, in Sweden, there is a cultural process to get consensus from all before moving forward with an initiative. It is not easy to get consensus and it takes time. Nevertheless, over the entire span of time for any given initiative, that investment in time to gain consensus is very powerful.

As a seasoned traveller, what’s one thing you never leave home without?

Passport and credit card, the rest can be solved.

What’s your dream bucket list destination?

Probably Mauritius. I have been to Rome several times, it is one destination that I would want to visit over and over again. ✤

PAYING HOMAGE TO GREEK HERITAGE

Chef Georgios Anachorlis Executive Sous Chef at Mandarin Oriental, Doha, explains the flavours and traditions he brings to the kitchen.

You’re known for bringing Mediterranean soul and Greek flavours to your kitchen. How do you mix the traditional with the more contemporary to keep things fresh and innovative –can you give some examples?

I have always believed that tradition is not something to be altered simply to appear modern. It is a cultural legacy, built over generations, and it deserves to be preserved with care. If we distance ourselves too much from it, we risk losing the very essence that gives our cuisine its soul. For me, tradition serves as

a source of inspiration. It guides us to create new dishes, tell new stories and, over time, shape new traditions of our own. My aim is not to reinvent what has already stood the test of time but rather to refine and enrich the experience that surrounds it.

A meaningful example of this philosophy is reflected in our pastry and bakery offering. We have embraced ingredients that honour culinary heritage, incorporating extra virgin olive oil in place of butter and sweetening our desserts with Malika Honey, the hotel’s own harvest of premium Sidr honey. In Greek culture,

both honey and olive oil are far more than ingredients. Honey, once considered the food of the gods, symbolises purity, vitality and healing. Olive oil is the soul of our cuisine, deeply rooted in family, balance and nourishment. By weaving these ingredients into modern preparations, we honour the past while offering our guests something authentic, comforting and quietly luxurious.

Until your promotion to Executive Sous Chef in 2023, your career had always been on the sweeter side as a pastry chef. How have you adjusted that experience to the wider kitchen role you now have?

Pastry instilled in me a deep appreciation for discipline, precision and balance. These principles continue to shape my approach across every section of the kitchen. The shift into a wider culinary role extended beyond technique. It marked a meaningful evolution in how I connect with people and lead with purpose. It gave me the opportunity to connect with chefs beyond the pastry and bakery and to foster a team culture grounded in generosity, humility and trust.

Kindness has always been at the heart of how I lead and who I am. It is not a strategy, but a core value. I believe in respecting people, their emotions, the craft we represent and the integrity of each ingredient we touch. This respect creates an environment where creativity can thrive and where excellence is achieved through inspiration rather than pressure.

Moving from pastry to an executive role did not mean leaving anything behind. It allowed me to broaden my influence while staying true to what I value most. Creating beauty, supporting others and honouring the stories we tell through food.

What three ingredients would you take to a desert island and why?

I would take extra virgin olive oil, lemons and honey. These three ingredients are deeply personal and speak to the culinary values I grew up with. Extra virgin olive oil is the foundation of Mediterranean cuisine, which shaped my upbringing both in the kitchen and at the table. It brings richness, harmony and depth to even the most humble preparation. Lemons contribute brightness and clarity, offering a natural elegance that enhances balance in both sweet and savoury dishes. And honey is much more than a sweetener. It embodies nourishment, memory and cultural identity. With these three elements, I could create not only sustenance, but a sense of comfort, beauty and belonging, even in the most remote place.

What is your signature dish at Mandarin Oriental, Doha and what makes it popular?

Our artisanal gelato, crafted daily in our in-house gelato shop, has become a signature element of the guest experience. It is made with uncompromising attention to quality, using only natural ingredients and traditional Italian techniques. No artificial flavours or shortcuts. The result is gelato that is pure, velvety and deeply satisfying. One flavour that resonates most with our guests and with me personally, is our Madagascar vanilla gelato. It may seem simple, but it is anything but ordinary. Real Madagascar vanilla is one of the most prized ingredients in the world. It is fragrant, nuanced and remarkably elegant. Its rarity and cost make it uncommon in most ice cream shops, but we choose to honour it without compromise. ✤

A TASTE OF TRADITION

surroundings and an impeccable balance of tradition and modernity

a

Laura Morris discovered stunning
on
trip to The Courtyard at The Plaza Doha, LXR Hotels & Resorts.

Just off the main lobby of The Plaza Doha, we stepped into The Courtyard, a space so bathed in natural light and understated opulence, it instantly felt like entering an orangery in a grand European estate. Towering ceilings, draped in sweeping burnt-orange velvet curtains, created a sense of occasion. The room itself was vast, yet it managed to remain intimate, thanks to careful attention to décor – stone columns and lavish chandeliers balanced by pockets of greenery and floral arrangements that softened the regal structure.

As we headed to our seats, there was a calm sophistication in the air. Light piano music floated through the space, paired with the gentle murmur of conversation. Despite the grandeur, the atmosphere was serene. Guests were relaxed, clearly in no rush to leave. many lingering over tea long after plates had been cleared. The tables, elegantly spaced, were dressed with goldentrimmed crockery, each piece stamped with The Plaza’s initials. It felt like a promise: here, even the smallest details mattered. Today, we had come for the signature afternoon tea and the menu delivered an impeccable balance of traditional favourites and modern refinements. On being seated, we perused the menus and were offered a wide selection of drinks; everything from fragrant loose-leaf teas to coffees and fresh juices. The attentive staff talked us through the offering giving insight into its many highlights. After no time at all our spectacular afternoon tea arrived, on an elegant tiered stand worthy of some quick social media snaps!

The savoury selection arrived warm, each bite-sized piece presented like a miniature artwork. We began with the Wild Mushroom Croquette, its crisp exterior giving way to an earthy, rich filling. Creamy and herb-flecked, it was as indulgent as it was comforting. Next, the Caramelised Onion Tart impressed with its buttery shortcrust base, topped with deeply sweet, slowcooked onions and a generous shaving of Parmesan. The contrast between the sugary caramelisation and the salty cheese hit just the right note. The Crispy Beef Slider stood out visually, the vivid red bun enveloping a golden-breaded patty, topped with melted Emmental. A dollop of spicy tomato sauce added heat and zing, while the herby undertone in the beef made it instantly memorable. Equally delightful was the Truffle Chicken Troutlet. The soft sousvide chicken was luxuriously tender, and the creamy truffle sauce that accompanied it was fragrant without overpowering. Encased in a delicate tart, this morsel begged to be eaten in one bite –each element melting together in rich harmony.

Of course, no afternoon tea is complete without finger sandwiches, and The Courtyard’s version was refined and elegant. The Smoked Turkey Breast, served with crisp baby gem and tomato in rye toast, offered a wholesome, lightly smoky profile. The Egg Mimosa and Cress, finely chopped and nestled between whole wheat slices, had a creamy texture and mild pepperiness that made it an instant personal favourite. The classic Cucumber and Cream Cheese, smooth and subtle, added a cooling contrast that rounded out the trio beautifully.

After a brief pause, our attention turned to the desserts: an eye-catching array that looked almost too beautiful to eat. The precision and artistry in their presentation was unmistakable; each petit four was a work of skilled patisserie.

The Raspberry Tartelette was bright and tangy, its crisp shell filled with raspberry financier and confit, topped with fresh berries. The flavours were as vibrant as the colours, the tartness cut with just enough sweetness to keep it balanced. We next tried the Salted Caramel and Coffee Choux which was an indulgent highlight. The light choux pastry was filled with silky coffee cream and finished with a rich salted caramel. The combination of bitterness, salt and sweetness was addictive (had the tray been full of these alone, we wouldn’t have complained!). Equally intriguing was the Exotic Baba, soaked through with tropical fruit syrup and resting on a buttery shortbread base. The sponge was sticky and fragrant, its flavour deepened by the syrup’s intensity, while the biscuit beneath gave a welcome crunch. For the finale of the dessert tier, a decadent Double Chocolate Tart with Hazelnut Sponge and Praline Feuilletine provided a satisfying contrast in texture. The crisp base, soft sponge and rich ganache were dusted in cocoa, a stylish finish to the sweet selection. And then, of course, came the scones! These were served warm, wrapped and already garnering high praise from our server before we even began. As a Brit in Doha, I approached with mild scepticism (too often they’re either dry or overly doughy) but these, were perfection! Light yet substantial, delicately sweet, some plain and some dotted with fruit. With clotted cream and a trio of jams, it was a fitting nod to the tradition of afternoon tea. As we sipped the last of our hot drinks and admired the surrounding elegance, it was clear why The Courtyard had earned such a loyal following. From the impeccable setting to the thoughtful service and outstanding food, this was more than a light afternoon treat, it was a luxurious experience. Refined but never fussy, indulgent yet inviting, The Courtyard at The Plaza offers an afternoon tea that celebrates both elegance and enjoyment. We left already planning our return. ✤

SPICE ABOVE THE CITY IN DOHA

At Qalamkarri in Banyan Tree Doha at La Cigale Mushaireb, Amica Sicilia samples modern Indian cuisine with one of the city’s most spectacular views.

Named for the ancient textile art of kalamkari –hand-painted or block-printed cloth once crafted in India and Iran using natural dyes – Qalamkarri in Banyan Tree Doha is a restaurant steeped in tradition, reimagined with contemporary elegance. It starts with the view. Through wraparound windows, Doha stretches out in every direction – the towers of West Bay, the soft lights of Mushaireb, the gentle curve of the bay. At night, the city shimmers below like a jewellery box tipped open. Inside, the restaurant is elegant and ornate, divided into more private dining spaces by arches inspired by Mughal palaces. Walls are patterned with peacocks inlaid in silver inspired by the intricate, romantic designs of kalamkari fabrics and the palette is deep and rich: dark pinks, charcoal, gold. It feels both grand and intimate, like stepping into a private salon high above the city.

Qalamkarri’s aim is clear from the start: to take the depth and complexity of Indian cuisine and present it with precision, restraint and a touch of playfulness. There’s tradition here, but it’s reimagined – each dish anchored in the familiar but executed with a modern lightness.

Dinner begins with a theatrical flourish of surprise and delight: our amuse-bouche arrives on the back of a custom-made silver elephant, its long legs inspired by Salvador Dalí. It carries, along with wishes for prosperity and good fortune, a single perfect dahi puri chaat. Its golden puff is filled with spiced potato and three kinds of yoghurt and topped with a feather-light crisp quinoa cracker crowned with a beetroot reduction and vegan caviar. Each glowing ‘pearl’ is flavoured with cumin or mint.

Next comes a shining mango and cucumber salad – a sort of vegan tartare of the king of fruits with fresh sweetcorn and pomegranate – tart, bright and cooling. The charcoal aloo avocado chaat is a clever invention: smooth potato encased in a dark but delicate activated charcoal crust on a bed of creamy avocado. Among the hot starters, the black pepper chicken is simple and tender, with just enough peppery heat to linger. The paneer tikka is marinated in red masala spices and fired in the tandoor, holding its shape before crumbling into creamy deliciousness. A Kashmiri seekh kebab, made with finely minced and spiced lamb, is soft and aromatic with subtle sweet-sour notes.

Mains arrive in a flourish of colour and scent, offering a tabletop tour of the nation. The butter chicken, from North India, is a deep umber, its surface swirled with cream like contour lines on a map – the flavour rich with tomato and smoky spice. A South Indian seafood curry offers contrast: prawns, scallops and delicately flaky sea bass are barbecued and then bathed in a toasted and fragrant coconut-based curry. We scoop it up greedily with simple roti flatbread and a contemporary fusion twist on naan with local za’atar herbs – it is a beautifully flaky and layered bake and, unexpectedly, one of the meal’s highlights. Then, the showstopper: whole lamb shank biryani sealed beneath a golden dome of bread, baked in a clay pot. The lid is cracked open at the table, releasing a fragrant rush of steam and the treasures beneath of saffron-stained rice studded with cashews, raisins and fried onions. The lamb is rich, falling from the bone

and the dish feels gloriously celebratory – a real centrepiece. Throughout, tall glasses of refreshing mocktails arrive, layered with tamarind, lemon, black masala salt and lively soda. The sharp, salty, bright combination is a high-end twist on a streetfood staple.

A palate cleanser of paan ice cream arrives served over dry ice, a perfumed interlude to usher in the dessert course, underlining Qalamkarri’s ability to pair precision flavour choices with theatrical flair.

Dessert continues the same thread of thoughtful reinvention. Carrot cake is layered with halwa and carrot jam, served warm with vanilla ice cream and a crumble of malted biscuit. A final scoop of mango ice cream arrives topped with a whisper of gold leaf – a quiet flourish, just enough.

There’s a quiet narrative to Qalamkarri: a story told in flavour, texture and design. It offers a clear, contemporary take on Indian fine dining that doesn’t lose touch with its heritage, framed by one of the most breathtaking views in Doha. The flavours are authentic and thoughtful, the presentation stylish without pretence and the setting – high above the city, surrounded by quiet luxury – is unforgettable. ✤

THAI FLAVOURS ON THE MENU IN DOHA

Authentic tastes of Thailand are always in season as AMS discovered on a return visit to Benjarong.

Wherever you go, Thai food has become a global favourite. In Doha, Benjarong has established itself as the place you visit when you want ‘the real thing’. The Dusit Doha Hotel’s signature Thai restaurant serves up tasty food and welcome reminders of the Land of Smiles.

A Warm Welcome

The restaurant itself is filled with Thai murals throughout that depict scenes from the country’s history and culture. The staff also wear traditional dress and are unfailingly polite and smiley, always recognising us. The soft lighting and hypnotic music also add to the overall atmosphere. It's not bold and brash but comforting and relaxing.

To start our weekday dinner, we were greeted with genuine smiles and warm scented towels. Not long after sitting down, we were offered sparkling or still water and left to soak up the ambience. Chef Somruethai – better known as Chef Ninja – also came out from the kitchen with a bright smile to wish us an enjoyable meal.

A Feast Of Favourites

We started with two classics: the Tom Yum Goong and the Yum Som O Nakornchaisri Hoi Shell. The Tom Yum was as punchy and aromatic as you’d expect. The broth was infused with lemongrass, kaffir lime and galangal that literally filled our area like a perfume. There was a generous helping of prawns, while cherry tomatoes and mushrooms added a sharpness that cut through the heat. Every spoonful was a flavourful mix of sour, spicy and savoury, with just enough fire to waken up our taste buds.

Next, we got to sample the refreshing pomelo salad. The small segments of fruit burst with every bite, balanced beautifully by roasted peanuts and tender scallops. Desiccated coconut and fried shallots added depth and texture, making the dish a vibrant start to the meal.

Our mains took things up a notch. The 24-hour braised beef rib arrived glistening on the plate. It was so ridiculously tender that it required no more than the gentlest nudge of a fork. The fivespice blend and Thai-style sour sauce gave it complexity, while the side of young kale added just the right amount of bitterness to balance the dish.

Next came the Pad Thai Goong Benjarong, a crowd-pleaser done right. The noodles were glossy and just the right level of chewy, tangled up with prawns, egg and green chives. The house tamarind sauce had a mellow tang, elevated by a topping of crushed peanuts and lime. Thankfully, Chef Ninja didn’t try to reinvent a classic. She stuck to tried and tested methods and everything about it worked so well.

No Thai meal would be complete without the famous green curry with chicken. And we were not disappointed. The arrival of a bowl of fragrant and creamy sauce, with generous pieces of grilled marinated chicken, aubergines and sweet basil was met with a sharp intake of air from both of us. It had a slow, creeping heat that built gently. Each bite was warming but never overwhelming. The balance of sweet and spicy was masterfully handled, and the hint of char from the chicken was another welcome touch.

But the absolute winner was the lamb shank mussaman curry. The whole thing had been gently braised for 48 hours until the meat was falling off in long, satisfying strands. Underneath it, was a rich and indulgent sauce laced with cinnamon, star anise and the sweetness of coconut cream. If you’d served me the sauce as a dish on its own, I probably would have been none the wiser. It was moreish without being heavy, comforting without being cloying. The whole thing was a triumph and only good manners prevented me from licking the plate.

After all the rich food, we needed a light palate-cleansing dessert. The solution? Chilled fruit salad served over crushed ice. Simple yet elegant. We enjoyed ripe slices of dragon fruit, mango and strawberry alongside rambutan. Light, clean and colourful, exactly what the doctor ordered.

Each time we return to Benjarong, we never fail to feel like we've stepped back into Thailand. It’s become a place where we’ve celebrated family milestones and enjoyed many laidback evenings. Although we chose to dine inside, the outdoor terrace is just as inviting, with fairy lights and the gentle hum of the city setting a relaxed tone. Thanks to Benjarong’s cosy atmosphere, warm service and consistently authentic flavours, it’s an easy choice for anyone looking for genuine Thai cuisine in the heart of Doha. ✤

CITY SUNSETS AND STANDOUT BITES IN THE HEART OF DOHA

We arrived at Millennium Place Doha, in Rawdat Al Khail, just as the sun was setting behind the city skyline. Perfect timing. The lobby immediately impressed – high ceilings, huge windows and plenty of space to breathe. It felt modern but welcoming. Some hotels try too hard. This one didn't need to. There was a large chandelier overhead and smart wood panelling on the walls, but nothing felt overdone. People were scattered around the seating areas, chatting over coffee or waiting for friends, obviously feeling relaxed and comfortable. A large flower arrangement in the centre caught our attention and pointed us toward reception. The staff were professional and helpful, hospitality without overstatement. The whole space felt lively without being overwhelming.

Our Suite

Our second-floor suite was a real treat. Floor-to-ceiling windows filled the living room with natural light, looking out over Doha's cityscape. We had a private balcony too – perfect for morning coffee or watching the city wind down at night.

The space felt clean and uncluttered. Soft grey carpets, a deep blue sofa and simple touches like fresh fruit on the dining table. The round dining table worked well for snacks or laptop work, while the kitchenette had everything you'd need for tea or quick meals.

The bedroom was equally comfortable – big windows, thick curtains, great for blocking out the harsh summer sunlight if you fancy a lazy morning in bed, and two comfy armchairs for reading that encouraged us to sit back and relax. The bed was generous and comfortable with crisp white sheets and proper pillows.

The bathroom impressed us the most. Clean lines, modern fixtures and genuine luxury. The rainfall shower felt like a spa experience – so enjoyable that it was kind of hard to step out of. The Jacuzzi bath was a bonus and we had an abundance of thick towels.

Rooftop Pool and Sunset

After settling in, we made our way to the rooftop as daylight began to fade. The pool area offered something increasingly rare in city hotels: genuine tranquillity. The water lay still and inviting, while views stretched across Doha's impressive skyline in every direction.

Evening light has a particular quality in this part of the world – golden and warm, softening the city's sharp edges. A gentle breeze provided relief from the day's heat, creating an atmosphere that felt removed from everyday pressures while remaining part of the city's rhythm.

The neighbouring Italian-style eatery, with its stucco walls, quaint ironmongery and abundant plant pots gave the space a gentle Mediterranean feel – a real escape in the heart of the city.

Dinner at Mario e Mario

The hotel's Italian restaurant, Mario e Mario, overlooked the pool we had just enjoyed. The décor managed to feel both lively and comfortable, all exposed brick and soft lighting, with the pool sparkling outside. Service was efficient and friendly, setting high expectations for our meal.

The pasta course gave an air of genuine theatre: fresh noodles tossed in a wheel of melting cheese. Servers also walked around with fresh pizza on offer. It arrived with the kind of properly charred, chewy crust that speaks of skilled technique and experience. The barbecue meats were generous and flavourful, but it was the seabass that lingered in memory – impeccably fresh, simply prepared and brightened with lemon and herbs in a way that showcased the kitchen's understanding of modern Italian cuisine. Dessert brought playful elegance: crepes sliced into delicate ribbons and dressed with Nutella, managing to be both sophisticated and genuinely fun. Throughout the evening, staff demonstrated that rare combination of attentiveness and intuition, offering recommendations without presumption and maintaining just the right level of presence.

Morning Pursuits

Breakfast at Tawlet Yvonne

Breakfast was served at Tawlet Yvonne, where the buffet showcased Lebanese influences alongside international staples. Classic favourites appeared throughout: creamy hummus, smoky muhammara, warm manakeesh fresh from the oven. The labneh was tangy and rich, while pickles added brightness to the spread. A live egg station handled individual orders, alongside an impressive selection of fresh breads, cakes, cheeses and other goodies. The coffee was strong and hot, and the atmosphere was relaxed, with staff checking in to make sure everything was just so.

And, it’s worth mentioning that this venue is seriously pretty – its huge windows, wall murals and garden-style roof give a terrace-like feel but protected from the blistering Doha heat. It would be the perfect place for snacks, tea or meals at any time of the day and made for a great morning wake-up.

Bright and early the next morning, we headed down to the gym in the basement. It was much bigger than we’d expected, with a full range of resistance machines, treadmills and bikes, plus a matted area for stretching or yoga. There was also a sauna and steam room tucked away and a large indoor pool shimmering quietly under soft lights. We didn’t make it to the spa this time, but it’s on our list for our next visit.

Lasting Impressions

Millennium Place Doha delivered genuine respite in the heart of the city. The spacious suite, rooftop pool and exceptional Italian dinner created a stay that lingers in our memories for all the right reasons.

It's the details that matter: friendly reception, quality linens, that balcony view, service that anticipates without fuss. For comfort, excellent food and urban peace, this hotel simply delivers. ✤

HOTLIST: 2025 TRENDING DESTINATIONS!

Craving somewhere new? This year’s biggest travel trends are all about the unexpected – from remote escapes to reinvented cities and surreal natural wonders. Check out these four hot trending destinations of 2025. And the best part? You’ll get bragging rights for going before everyone else.

From far-flung frontiers to culture-packed cities, the travel scene this year is all about the unexpected. Whether it’s chasing the Aurora Borealis or tucking into midnight ramen under glowing lanterns, these trending destinations offer something fresh, exciting and just the right side of cool.

GREENLAND

Long considered one of the last true wildernesses, Greenland is suddenly a lot easier to get to – and people are starting to take notice. Nuuk, the capital, now has a brand-new international airport, with two more set

to open by 2026, giving this vast, icy land a new kind of accessibility. What hasn’t changed is Greenland itself –and that’s the magic. The world’s largest island still feels totally untouched. Nuuk itself is a small but colourful city that blends tradition with a growing creative scene – expect Inuit art, smart design and restaurants serving up popular musk ox, Arctic char (a common fish) and seaweed broth. But the real attraction lies beyond. From its towering icebergs and glassy fjords to its tundra plains and polar wildlife, Greenland has a front-row seat to some pretty epic landscapes. Whether you’re kayaking past blue glaciers, sailing through ice-choked bays, whale watching during the midnight sun or enjoying some of the best

heli-skiing in the world, Greenland has plenty to offer the adventurous traveller. Unlike Iceland, its better-known neighbour, Greenland remains refreshingly crowd-free. It still feels like a place few have really explored – and that’s exactly why it’s trending. So go now, before the rest of the world catches on!

OSAKA, JAPAN

If you’ve been looking for a reason to book that Japan trip, this is it. Expo 2025 kicked off in Osaka this April and runs right through to October, transforming Yumeshima Island into a futuristic wonderland of ideas, tech and international culture. But even without the expo buzz, Osaka’s always been a bit of a vibe with those in the know. It’s gritty, loud and endlessly fun – the kind of place where food is practically a religion and street life never sleeps. Try takoyaki (octopus balls) hot off the grill, okonomiyaki (a savoury pancake) or deep-fried, bite-sized meats and vegetable skewers at local kushikatsu joints. Neighbourhood-wise, Dotonbori is the heart of the action with neon signs, canal views and a sense of organised chaos that somehow works, while Shinsekai’s unique streetscapes and nostalgic atmosphere give off retro-cool, old-world Showa-era charm. Here, the iconic Tsutenkaku Tower is a must-see. Fancy something quieter? The trendy streets around the bohemian neighbourhood of Nakazakicho are made for slow strolls, vintage shopping and a visit to one of the many indie stores and organic cafés. Or head to Osaka Castle Park for a breather and a bento under the trees. Day trips to Kyoto or Nara are easy, but really, many end up ditching the itinerary altogether and staying local – thanks to Osaka’s infectious energy. With Expo 2025 shining a spotlight on its creative and cultural edge, Osaka’s set to be 2025’s mustvisit Japanese city. So come for the culture and stay for the midnight noodle runs (restaurants stay open late, some until early morning hours) and the people who’ll make you feel instantly at home.

TROMSØ, NORWAY

It doesn’t get more otherworldly than this! Sitting well above the Arctic Circle (and known as the Arctic Capital), this small but lively city is the place to be this year if the Northern Lights are on your bucket list – and let’s be honest, they probably are. The solar activity is meant to be especially strong through 2025 and the best time to see the lights in Tromsø in July is during the darker hours of the night, despite the midnight sun (although, the most optimal time to see the surreal green-pink light show is September to March). But there’s more to this tiny Arctic city than just chasing the Aurora Borealis. With its snow-covered peaks and icy fjords, Tromsø has a quietly cool vibe that makes it a popular destination. Explore its compact and charming city centre filled with colourful wooden houses, cool little museums and a rich food scene offering sustainably sourced treats like boknafisk (semi-dried cod) and reindeer sirloin. Don’t forget to pop

into the stunningly modern Arctic Cathedral or warm up with locally roasted coffee and the famous cinnamon buns. There are plenty of ways to experience the beautiful wilderness too. You can try snowshoe hikes through silent forests, dog sledding, snowmobiling or just bundle up in a traditional Sami tent (called lavvu) with reinsdyr gryte (reindeer stew) by the fire. It’s also worth catching the views from the Fjellheisen cable car or booking a cosy cabin for some fireside stargazing. And if you're up for a winter dip (followed by a sauna, obviously), locals will tell you it’s the best way to feel properly alive. Despite its remote location, Tromsø feels open and welcoming and is easily accessible via direct flights from Oslo.

VANUATU

If you’re after a proper island escape and looking to switch off completely, Vanuatu should be on your 2025 travel radar. It's made Lonely Planet’s list of best places to travel in 2025 and once you land, you’ll get why. This beautiful South Pacific island nation is all unspoilt tropical forest, coral reefs

Greenland,

and that castaway feeling (in the best way). The vibe here is refreshingly simple: think palm-fringed beaches, junglecovered volcanoes, traditional villages and snorkelling spots, where you might be the only one in the water. On Efate, Vanuatu’s main island, you can explore blue holes at the popular Blue Lagoon, visit fresh produce markets and take in the laid-back capital, Port Vila. On Tanna, hike up to the edge of Mount Yasur, one of the world’s most accessible active volcanoes, and watch it spit lava into the night sky. There's also a big focus on sustainability – communities still live by traditional customs (referred to by the pidgin word kastom) and eco-tourism is thoughtfully woven into local life in a push to keep development low-impact. Forget crowded beaches or all-inclusive buffets – Vanuatu isn’t about five-star flash, it’s about raw experience and a gentler way of life. Accommodation ranges from simple thatched bungalows to off-grid eco-lodges, where the seafood is fresh and the wi-fi optional. For travellers tired of overdone hotspots, Vanuatu is the kind of place where time slows and your biggest decision is beach or waterfall. ✤

A PIECE OF KAYYCA

We caught up with Amanda López Moreno, AKA Kayyca, the multi-talented performer you may have seen at St. Regis Doha and the voice of Autistic Love by EDrien the Nakameleon, to find out about her musical journey and much more.

First of all, tell us about the name change. What prompted that?

My family is the heart of my life – my anchor, my safe space and the foundation of everything I believe in: love, protection, unity, strength and deep connection. The name ‘Kayyca’ is something I chose early on, not as a stage name, but as a tribute. It’s built from the initials of my siblings and myself: Ketrin, Alicia, Yoan, Yana, Carolina and Amanda. Together, we are Kayyca and, in that name, I carry all of them with me. It reminds me of where I come from and gives me incredible strength – on stage and in life. Kayyca isn’t just a name; it’s my essence, my power and a reminder that I am never alone.

You’re of Bolivian-Albanian heritage – quite an unusual mix –how did you come to be raised in Germany?

My parents met in Germany under very different circumstances – my father came from Bolivia at the age of 17 on an engineering scholarship, and my mother arrived as a refugee from Albania. They found each other in a small town, fell in love and built a life together. I’m the youngest of six children and I was born and raised in Germany. That mix shaped every part of who I am today. I always say my family is my nationality because the way I was raised is so special. It taught me strength, adaptability and the power of family.

You started your artistic career at just four years old, so you’ve pretty much grown up in the spotlight. Please tell us about those early years and how they shaped your journey. I was born into a very musical family. My mother studied violin and later completed a master’s degree in music therapy, while my father was an artist at heart – he played guitar, wrote songs and poetry and painted. That artistic spirit was in my cradle from the very beginning. I was always singing and dancing – it just came naturally. My childhood was deeply shaped by classical music, dance, theatre and the stage. I performed in various opera productions at the Staatsoper Stuttgart and trained at the John Cranko Ballet Academy, where I received a classical ballet education. Performing never felt like a performance to me – it was simply how I expressed myself. Singing and dancing have always come straight from my heart, and I’m deeply grateful I had the support to live out my passion from such a young age.

You’ve been involved with music and performance across multiple genres, from opera to classical ballet. What are you doing now?

Alongside classical music, I was also deeply influenced by soul, jazz and R&B from a young age. I began writing my own songs early on, often accompanying myself on the piano – always emotional, always from the soul. Today, I perform mostly soul and jazz, but I truly enjoy experimenting with different genres. I love blending styles and breaking boundaries. In my own music, I’m especially drawn to experimental R&B – it gives me the freedom to explore both softness and intensity in sound and emotion.

What brought you to Doha? How long have you been here and how are you liking it?

After completing my bachelor’s degree in music production in

Berlin, I felt a strong desire to explore something new. I had been carrying the feeling for a while that it was time to leave Germany and step into a new chapter. My older sister Ketrin (ketmetics) who is one of the top hair and make-up artists in Doha, has been living in Doha for several years, and her presence here gave me a sense of grounding. I decided to come and continue my journey as a singer. I’ve now been in Doha for a year and a half, and it has truly become home. From the very beginning, I was welcomed with open arms. Doha has given me peace, protection and a sense of belonging that I was deeply searching for.

You gained recognition through your collaboration with EDrien the Nakameleon on Autistic Love. How did you become involved with this project? Please tell us a bit about the music and the process.

EDrien and I are very close friends and, when he told me about this project, he asked if I could imagine lending my voice to it. We sat down together, and within just two sessions, we had created the entire song. It flowed so naturally – it was meant to be. Autistic Love is a very special and personal project, created to raise awareness and compassion for people on the autism spectrum. The idea for the chorus – ‘feel the love’ – came from EDrien, and I just started writing from the heart. I’m truly grateful to have been part of something so meaningful. EDrien created something beautiful and important with this project, and I’m proud to have added my voice to it.

You’ve also released music in your native German. Is this something that is getting much traction in Doha? Do you write as well as perform?

Yes, I released my German EP Zurück zu mir this past May. The songs were written and produced back in 2023 in Berlin. It tells the story of my emotional healing, of finding my way to Doha and the peace I discovered here. One of the most meaningful moments was shooting the music video for my song Alleine sein here in Doha, produced by Abdullah Khan. It felt like I was connecting two worlds – letting go of the past while stepping into something new. I’ve been writing songs since I was about 12 or 13, mostly in English. But during the COVID years, I started experimenting with writing in German and finding my sound in it.

What or who would you say are your musical influences and passions, and why?

I grew up listening to so many different genres, and my favourite artists inspire me on different levels – emotionally, vocally and artistically. My biggest influences have definitely been legends like Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. In more recent years, I’ve been especially drawn to artists like James Blake, Jessie J, Jhené Aiko and Nathy Peluso – each of them speaks to a different part of me, and I admire how they blend vulnerability, power and experimentation in their work. But above all, my greatest inspiration is my sister, Carolina Lopez Moreno. She’s one of the most celebrated young sopranos in the world, and she’s also my anchor, my teacher and my biggest

supporter. I’ve learned so much from her – and I’m still learning. Her discipline, strength and passion deeply influence me as both an artist and a woman.

What do you like to do in Doha when you’re not entertaining your fans at St. Regis Doha?

Doha fascinates me with its beauty and sense of calm. I love going for walks, enjoying good food and simply taking in the views – it’s a city that allows you to breathe. I’m also a passionate dancer and I train in Muay Thai. In fact, I had my very first amateur kickboxing fight here in Doha, which was an unforgettable experience. Waking up and seeing the sea every morning fills me with happiness. It’s the little moments of peace and strength in this city that inspire me every day.

Lastly, can you share something about yourself that not many people would know – a secret talent or surprising bucket list item?

I’m quite an open book, but if there’s one thing people might not expect, it’s that I haven’t had much time to travel in my life – and I would absolutely love to. Seeing the world, exploring new cultures and collecting moments is definitely high on my bucket list. Also, fun fact: I’m actually highly allergic to animals – especially dogs, cats and horses. But since December, I’ve become a Husky mom to my dog, Ragnar, and I haven’t had a single allergic reaction to him. It truly feels like we were meant to find each other. He’s brought so much joy, peace, and love into my life – I honestly can’t imagine my days without him anymore. ✤

Director: Joseph Kosinski

Cast: Brad Pitt, Kerry Condon, Damson Idris, Javier Bardem, Simone Ashley, Lewis Hamilton

A re-release to mark the 41st Anniversary of the ultimate metal-rock parody that’s rightly gained a cult following. Prime Video

Some great new sounds for you to check out this month.

PHANTOMISLAND

Almost unbelievably, this June release is the 27th studio album from the ridiculously prolific Aussie rockers – they put out five albums a year in both 2017 and 2022! Known for psychedelic rock rhythms and microtonal (betweenthe-keys) sounds, Phantom Island promises a new vulnerable reflection but we’re also treated to multiple genres from ‘70s-style soft rock to jazzy crooning. And the orchestral nature of some tracks is no surprise when you consider Chad Kelly, a Baroque specialist, was part of the project.

IDOLS

Released to coincide with the Brit singer’s self-organised Blud Fest – described as not ‘just a festival’ – it's a movement, a family and a space where individuality thrives – this fourth album from the Doncaster-born rocker is described by Kerrang! as ‘a go-getter of a record that pays homage to the greats whilst still feeling brand new’. The singer himself describes it as an attempt to make something classic and timeless – ‘wanting to build a world that would allow you to go on an adventure that would question the fundamentals of humanity, time, change, life, death and comprehend immortality. All I want to do is make people feel something!’ Big ambitions!

RASPBERRYMOON

Born from the solo project of frontman Will Anderson, who created previous albums entirely alone, Raspberry Moon marks the collective’s first outing as a full band. More positive on the subjects of love and romance than Will Anderson’s earlier offerings, the man himself says it’s a product of the happiest relationship he’s had so far in his life. That’s demonstrated by the move away from the shoegaze feel of earlier releases to include some fizzing power-pop tracks and plenty of guitar-hero moments to keep the rockers happy.

Sly! Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)

A memoir from the legendary Sly Stone never seemed to be on the cards. Having created some of the most memorable anthems of the 1960s and 1970s (Everyday People, Family Affair), he spent decades in the throes of addiction.

Finally clean, he was able to relate the ups and downs and ins and outs of his amazing life before his death last month.

Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) is a vivid, gripping, sometimes terrifying and ultimately affirming tour through Sly’s life and career.

What We’re (Still) Talking About

Scooby Dooby Doo, Where Are You!

In a plot twist straight out of children’s cartoons, a burglar in full Scooby-Doo costume broke into a convenience store in Duncanville, Alabama. Yes, Scooby himself — ears, tail and the works. The canine-clad culprit triggered the alarm at 3.45am but fled the scene before police could arrive. According to the Tuscaloosa Police Department, he ran off with cash and coins… but took no snacks. Not even a Scooby Snack!

CCTV footage of the burglar has left the internet in stitches, with commenters asking whether Fred, Velma and the gang were waiting outside in the Mystery Machine. Others predicted the inevitable, that when they catch him, he’s going to say, ‘And I would’ve gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for you meddling kids!’. The investigation is ongoing. Police are asking anyone who can help unmask the villain to come forward, presumably before he changes his outfit.

Sweet Escape

Mish and Lucy, two four-year-old brown bears living at Wildwood Devon wildlife park in the UK, decided Monday was the perfect day for adventure and honey. The pair somehow escaped their enclosure and made a direct dash for the park’s food store, where they polished off a full seven-day supply of honey, plus various treats, before falling fast asleep. No danger to the public was reported, though visitors were quickly moved to a secure building ‘just in case’. The

pair were monitored by CCTV and staff throughout the hour-long escapade and eventually coaxed back using recall training. No tranquiliser needed. Wildwood later confirmed that an ‘operational error’ had led to the breakout. Police are investigating, while the park has promised stricter safety checks. It’s hard to stay mad though. The little ones were last seen snoozing peacefully, looking like they’d just pulled off the sweetest heist in history.

PB&J Chronicles

Zoom court hearings are already strange enough but things reached new heights in Detroit, USA, when a woman was booted from a live session for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Asja Outerbridge was attending a virtual hearing for a minor offence when she decided it was the right time to prepare lunch. With her robe on, the bread in hand and her sick three-year-old in the back, the multitasking mum was caught

mid-swipe of peanut butter on live stream. Judge Sean Perkins was not amused and promptly removed her from the call. The now-viral moment made its way to Instagram, where Asja discovered her unexpected courtroom cameo. She later admitted she could’ve handled things better, saying, ‘I was having a mommy day’. Poor woman, maybe the court will understand. After all, parenting waits for no-one.
