When I think of art, I’m reminded of the dialogue from a Bollywood musical where a dance teacher tells his student that it’s not creativity that needs the city but the other way round (translated). What he means is, it’s we, as a community, who need art to survive and thrive.

We’re well into autumn – a season with an artistic aesthetic – leaves in hues of yellow, orange, red and brown, pink skies… Bahrain might not experience autumn (we have summer all year round!) but it’s definitely home to art – a lot of it! In our cover story, we talk to creative souls on the island about what inspires them, their thoughts, their journeys…

In nature, life’s getting ready to hibernate at this time but we, in Bahrain, are only getting busier. There’s a wide range of exciting events, from concerts and comedy shows to musical festivals – check out our Listen Up pages!

If you’re feeling consumed by wanderlust, read about our experience at The Dolder Grand Zurich – it’s the only antidote you’ll need.

Those who prefer Bahrain-bound adventures can enjoy a culinary journey through some of the Kingdom’s top dining spaces.

Our motoring section includes new launches you must not miss. We also take the all-new Hyundai Azera for a spin.

Our entertainment pages bring you your monthly dose of movies, music, books, beauty, fashion and gadgets.

Have fun reading this issue! I’ll see you in a bit.

THE FUN CONTINUES

Al Dana Amphitheatre has announced new, globally-renowned artists set to perform in Bahrain.

Jo Koy, a well-known name among stand-up enthusiasts, will be taking the stage on October 27 at Al Dana Amphitheatre as part of his world tour. Having modest beginnings, performing at a Las Vegas coffee house, the popular comic artist draws his inspiration from his family, specifically his son – watch Comin’ In Hot on Netflix where you will see Koy on a mission to educate the masses on how to raise a millennial, the intricacies of Filipino traditions, and more. Live From Seattle, also available on Netflix, reached number one on the Billboard Charts in 2019. In 2017, Koy broke a record for the most tickets sold by a single artist at 23,000 tickets and 11 sold-out shows at the Neal S. Blaisdell concert hall in Honolulu. In response, the mayor’s office proclaimed November 24 as Jo Koy Day! The comedian continued his record-breaking streak and recently, became the only stand-up artist to sell more than 17,000 tickets over 30 shows in one year at the Brea Improv. The rib tickler has even appeared on television – The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Late Show with James Corden, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Last Call with Carson Daly, among many others. Known for its curated mix of regional and international artists,

Al Dana Amphitheatre will host Bahraini singer and composer, Ahmed Al Jumairi, on December 21. The musician will showcase Arabic tunes – Bahraini Nights – with a group of talented artists from the Kingdom.

Music enthusiasts can also expect a scintillating performance by André Rieu on February 23 next year. The Dutch violinist and conductor, along with the Johann Strauss Orchestra, will be back to serenade fans. On his last visit earlier this year, His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa presented the musical powerhouse with the Order of Bahrain-First Class in recognition of his artistic contributions to the world. Rieu created the Johann Strauss Orchestra in 1987 and began with 12 members. Since then, he has sold over 40 million CDs and DVDs around the world and has been awarded more than 500 Platinum and 270 Gold awards for his unrivalled success. ✤

IN THE WORDS OF JULIANA OAKLEY

Artistic Style: Illustration

Please share your creative journey with us.

I always loved to draw since I was I child, I guess pretty much like every other child in the world, but I never grew out of it. However, professionally, I joined the illustrator's world rather late, only about three years ago. I mostly work on children's books. My art is inspired by daily life observations, my travels and, of course, fellow artists. Being an illustrator is very rewarding in terms of fulfilling one's passion and creativity. It also has potential to be financially rewarding, but like any other job it requires a lot of hard work, investment in your skills (courses, workshops, etc.) and time to establish your name – your brand essentially.

What’s your artistic process?

My process usually starts with gathering information on the subject and loads of references for inspiration, and it's during this time that ideas are beginning to form in my head. Next, I might start scribbling on a piece of paper, just to catch some of these ideas. But my main tool is an iPad. I proceed to sketching and later, finishing illustrations digitally in Procreate and/or Photoshop. Also, I am very much a bright colour palette person. I love rich and vivid combinations.

Tell us about your best illustration.

One of the most challenging was for a book (top right) about Hungarian scientist Katalin Karikó, who is a pioneer in mRNA [vaccine] technology. Not an easy topic for a children’s book but I am quite happy with how it turned out and it was very educational to work on it.

Any projects planned for the coming months?

There are a couple of books coming out soon. One of them

is about the enormous pineapple – a wonderful remake of a classical tale with the idea of people coming together for the greater good. The other is a beautiful story of a violin that survived through WW2 and, after years of neglect, found its way back to the loving and talented hands of the musician. Most of my work is available on Amazon, some of my books are in Waterstones in the U.K.

IN THE WORDS OF EJLAL ALKHUZAEI

Artistic Style: Photo Manipulation

Take us through your artistic journey.

I've always had a deep passion for various forms of artistic expression, from drawing and painting to handicrafts. My discovery of the power of computers and digital art, experimenting with software such as Paint on Windows, ignited my curiosity and passion for digital media. I persistently explore new techniques, merging technical expertise with artistic vision. Photo manipulation is a hobby, which allows me to unleash creativity and explore limitless possibilities.

What is photo manipulation?

My process centres on photo manipulation and digital techniques. It starts with conceptualisation and drawing inspiration from diverse sources. Using different software, I layer, mask and blend photographs and textures [tools to create illusions, merge images and the like]. I then refine the artwork, experimenting with effects to enhance the desired mood, after which I add the final touches.

What inspires your work?

I find inspiration in music, poems, movies, TV shows, books and fellow artists on platforms such as deviantart.com, art forums and social media.

A creation that stands out for you?

One piece that stands out for me is Between the Ebb and The Flow (centre right). Inspired by various sources, including the Arabic song Ejrofni Jamaet Khair Ft. Esra Alaseil, and a line from the novel It Ends with Us [by Colleen Hoover], the piece portrays a woman gracefully navigating the dynamic waves of the ocean symbolising the ups and downs of life. It represents resilience and moving forward despite challenges. This artwork has two versions: a pure photo manipulation piece and another version with mixed media elements such as foil, acrylic paint and shells. I cherish both for their unique qualities.

IN THE WORDS OF MARWA ALI AHMED

Artistic Style: Thread And Bead Art

When did you discover your craft?

I have loved art and craft since childhood. I still remember going to a sewing shop with my sister where we got to fashion bracelets for ourselves and admire the blingy beads. I first started embroidery at age 10 but it was a hobby, I never took it seriously until 2020 when I took a leap and discovered my style as a thread architect.

What or who influences your ideas?

Most of my creations are inspired by the Holy Quran, Bahraini culture, nature and Islamic architecture. I'm also influenced by many Russian and Japanese fibre artists.

Please describe your style and creative process.

I use bold, vibrant colours contrasted with neutrals to make the pieces stand out. I’m drawn to the artistic styles of Expressionism [distorted reality that expresses the artist's inner feelings] and Realism [an accurate, unembellished depiction]. I use a wide range of Japanese glass beads and experiment with luxurious materials such as semi-precious stones, natural pearls and mother of pearl. For instance, the Fig brooch (centre right) has gold-plated beads and semi-precious stones. My creative process starts with hand sketching the idea onto a fabric after which I gradually stitch the outlines and inner parts based on the complexity of the piece. Finally, I transform it into wearable art – brooches – or framed wall art.

Do you have a favourite?

The Sakura [Japanese cherry blossom] brooch that I'm wearing. The piece features 14-carat gold-plated Japanese beads and semi-precious stones. My work is displayed at Bahrain Authority for Culture & Antiquities’ shop ‘Made in Bahrain’ (@culture_ madeinbahrain on Instagram)

What surprises can we expect in the coming months?

Currently, I'm working on new portraits beside developing a casual and affordable range of brooches.

IN THE WORDS OF FAWAZ ALALAIWAT AKA FAWAZO

Artistic Style: Digital Art

You’ve been creating art for 35 years – 20 years in digital art! How did it all begin?

I got into art very early in my life, having a creative family was a great influence. My late father had one of the first bookshops in Bahrain – AlAlaiwat Bookshop – near Bab Al Bahrain. So, my playground was a library with more than 2,000 books. I was very interested in an old Arabic encyclopedia where page after page was illustrated, this was before they could print photos. I won my first art award at 11 years, I was in a UNICEF international schools’ competition and got second place, and the journey continues.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

I’m inspired by the beauty in everything natural or man-made, by my culture – past and present; by sci-fi movies and anime; by my family and friends. I see the world through a different lens. The influence list is way too big but I would say the classics Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí. I’m drawn to colours such as hot red, teal and purple.

How do you go about creating a piece?

I’m a multidisciplinary designer, artist and consultant. I specialise in digital art, and I love typography and creating my own fashion. I usually work on a theme so I come up with the concept and execution style, then I plan a few pieces and start working on them by looking for the images I need to create the artwork and then I move to Photoshop and Illustrator to put the collage together, after which I layer, fine-tune and clean. To finish things up, some colour magic [playing around with colour combinations] and that's one of my favourite parts.

Talk to us about the best piece you’ve created so far?

That's a very hard question to answer, most of the time it’s my latest artwork. My message usually is how my art affects people or touches someone deeply. My latest theme is Arab Futurism (below right) and I'm in love with exploring the future of the Arab world, from architecture to fashion to technology, and this has given me a new understanding of my culture and the times.

What surprises can we expect in the future?

During the pandemic, I completed 365 days of art and that was a transformational journey for me. In one year, I learned more than I did in my whole career! I’m planning an exhibition for that project. One-man Army is another exhibition to watch out for. I also plan to launch my online store soon.

Artistic Style: Painting

In the last decade or so, you’ve painted more than 500 artworks. How has the journey been?

I showed great interest in painting and drawing right from my childhood, which my parents noticed and encouraged. At the age of 10, I started attending art school. Over the years, I’ve gained profound knowledge of different styles and techniques. I started learning more about realism – my favourite artistic style. During 14 years in Bahrain, I have organised several exhibitions and created an educational art material book among other things.

What guides your artistic pursuits?

As a Russian in Bahrain, I find inspiration in the intriguing blend of cultures and landscapes that surround me. The vibrant colours and patterns found in traditional Bahraini architecture, along with the dynamic energy of the bustling markets and the serene beauty of the desert. I am also inspired by my Russian heritage; the folklore, the ethereal landscapes and the passion and emotion conveyed by Russian artists throughout history.

What does your colour palette look like?

I am drawn to a rich palette; the warm and earthy tones of ochre, burnt sienna and deep blues, reminiscent of the desert sands and the shimmering waters of the Arabian Gulf. My artworks serve as a visual narrative of my own personal journey.

Please tell us how you go about creating a piece. My artistic style is characterised by a harmonious blend of traditional techniques with contemporary elements. I predominantly work with oil and acrylic, as they allow me to explore the interplay of colours, textures and depth. When it comes to my creative process, it begins with a spark of inspiration. The next step involves sketching and planning. I use pencil or charcoal to translate my initial vision onto canvas, carefully considering composition, proportion and balance. Then, I transition to applying layers of paint. I build up the colours and

textures gradually, using various brushes and tools to achieve the desired effects. Throughout, I continuously evaluate and make artistic choices based on my intuition and the desired emotional impact. Finally, any final adjustments or enhancements.

Is there a creation that’s close to your heart?

One of the best pieces I've created so far is Glimmering Reflection (top right). This artwork is a zoomed-in portrait of a girl with a strikingly large eye, reflecting a sense of glamour and intrigue. The composition focuses on capturing the viewer's attention through the intense gaze and mesmerising allure of the subject. The exaggerated size of the eye serves as a metaphor, symbolising the depth of perception and the power of observation.

IN THE WORDS OF IRINA KOTOVA

Artistic Style: Painting

Please tell us a bit about your artistic background. My passion for painting started with buildings, cityscapes and perspectives, reflecting my architectural background. Later, I expanded my artistic range to include seascapes, abstracts, portraits and flowers. Now, I explore other aspects of art such as graphics, sculpture and conceptual art, striving to make each of my works emotional and unique.

What inspires your art?

I draw inspiration from the beauty and power of nature. My paintings of seascapes, landscapes, flowers and other natural elements capture the essence of hope and the human spirit. Through my art, I aim to convey a sense of optimism and resilience, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, there is always hope.

What colours set your artistic soul on fire?

In my paintings, I use a vibrant colour palette to bring nature to life. The blues and greens of the ocean contrast with the warm yellows and oranges of the setting sun. The bright colours of the flowers stand out against the deep shadows of the garden. These work together to create a sense of harmony and balance, reflecting the hope and optimism that I strive to convey through my art.

How would you describe your technique?

I use a variety of techniques in my paintings to capture the movement and energy of nature. I use loose brushstrokes to create a sense of motion in the water or the wind movement through the leaves, while finer details are added with a smaller brush to capture the richness of the textures. I also use layering and glazing techniques to build up depth and luminosity in my paintings.

Do you have a favourite creation?

I love my Arabian Voyager collection, which featured in my solo exhibition at Downtown Rotana earlier this year. Reflections

in Reflections in Yellow (below right), one of the pieces in this capsule, is an example of impressionistic art that captures the beauty and tranquillity of nature. I used a vibrant colour palette to create a contrast between the warm and cool tones of the sky and the water. I used light, colour and movement to translate an emotion of hope and freedom to the canvas.

What future projects are you excited for?

I’ve been co-mentoring fellow artists whose work will be on display at Downtown Rotana until October 22 (follow @Workart_ workshop Studio for more info). I’m also honoured to participate in Confluence 2023, the Bahrain Writers’ Circle’s annual exhibition, where artworks are displayed together with poems (follow @bahrainwriterscirclebwc for more info). TECHNOLOGY ON WHEELS

The 2024 Hyundai Azera is a premium full-sized saloon with an impressive array of high-end features.
• ISLAND RIDES
ISLAND RIDES •

Thanks to the team at First Motors, FACT was recently invited to inspect and test drive the top-of-the-range Calligraphy model of the all-new Azera, the seventh generation of the brand’s iconic flagship saloon.

Dynamic Exterior Design

From head-on, the 2024 Azera displays a front end that we felt to be a little boxier than its predecessor. This does not, however, equate to a dated-looking design. Instead, we recognised the rectangular shape of this full-sized luxury saloon’s forefront to bestow it with a unique yet refined presence.

Immediately drawing our attention was the distinctive parametric pattern grille in dark chrome, underscored by the futuristically designed continuous horizontal LED lamp that stretches the full width of the front face. This feature is also present at the back end, with both front and rear horizontal LED lamps displaying rhythmic light capabilities, accentuating the novel nature of the car’s exterior makeup.

Shifting our focus to the flanks, we acknowledged the dynamic flair of the car with its elongated bonnet, sloping shoulder line, split C-pillar and classic opera-glass. We noticed how the frameless doors, complete with auto-flush door handles, provide a further touch of class, as do the novel 19-inch alloy wheels which are fitted as standard on all Calligraphy trim models.

Luxurious Interior

Once inside, we noticed the absence of Hyundai’s conventional logo on the steering wheel, having been replaced by four sequential dots.

Looking around the cabin, we were impressed by the wraparound design of the interior and recognised the use of premium materials, including genuine wood and aluminium trimmings, along with the inclusion of ventilated Nappa leather seats with specially designed mono-post headrests.

We discovered both the front and rear to offer sufficient head, shoulder and leg room, with up to five occupants able to sit comfortably on longer journeys. The welcoming nature of the rear seating was amplified by its exclusive reclining capabilities, a first-in-class feature.

We loved the inclusion of the panoramic sunroof that amplified the feeling of space and ensured the entire cabin had plenty of natural light. To further enhance the practical nature of the vehicle, Hyundai has included a sizeable, hands-free Smart Power Trunk in its design.

High-End Infotainment & Tech

The all-new Azera contains Hyundai’s Connected Car Digital Cockpit, a feature we found to provide an intuitive and innovative driving experience. This advanced configuration of screens and hardware is powered by high-speed processors and a cuttingedge computing system.

This digital setup includes a 12.3-inch full TFT LCD infotainment display, a 12.3-inch fully virtual flatscreen instrument cluster and a 12-inch Head-up Display. This modern configuration combines touch elements with physical buttons, enabling us to control multiple features and functions without removing our hands

from the steering wheel.

Perhaps our favourite feature of the new Azera’s interior was the novel turn signals. When indicating left, the speedometer became a separate display on which we could see the same view as the left side-view mirror. The rev counter provided the same function for the right side.

Another must-mention feature is the outstanding 10-speaker Bose sound system that provides a high-quality soundtrack for any journey. In fact, we agreed the high-end tech and features fitted in the all-new Azera are of a quality usually reserved for vehicles with considerably higher price tags. Furthermore, the 2024 model features Hyundai’s advanced driver assistance system, SmartSense. Highlights of this extensive range of features include blind spot monitoring and detection, lane keep assist and lane departure warning, front and back collision avoidance assist and rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist.

Imposing Power & Performance

As is always the case, our favourite part of the day was heading out onto the roads. The latest Azera houses a capable 3.5-litre GDi V6 engine coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This Smartstream engine produces an impressive maximum power output of up to 300hp at 6,400rpm and a peak torque of up to 360Nm at 5,000rpm.

Navigating our way around the Kingdom, certain performance features stood out. Firstly, the Electronically Controlled Suspension with Road Preview (Preview-ECS). This cutting-edge suspension system analyses the road conditions ahead and automatically adjusts the damping force accordingly, ensuring we had one smooth ride.

Secondly, the Road-noise Active Noise Control (RANC). This fascinating feature uses an acceleration sensor to calculate the vibration from the road to the car and analyses the road noise through a microphone. It then emits inverted sound waves

near the occupants’ ears to neutralise the incoming road noise. The result was a tranquil travelling environment from which we watched the kilometres roll silently by.

Thirdly, the Predictive Gear-shift System (PGS). This state-of-theart system improves driving safety and comfort by predicting the acceleration and deceleration conditions of the road ahead. It automatically shifts to the optimal gear, working in tandem with ADAS navigation and radar signals. Pretty impressive to say the least.

Our Verdict

The all-new Hyundai Azera is a capable, classy, full-sized luxury saloon, offering an abundance of cutting-edge tech and a safe and comfortable travelling environment. ✤

CAR CAROUSEL

Looking to upgrade or buy a new car? National Motor Company, the sole distributor of Honda vehicles in Bahrain, have launched the all-new Honda Pilot and Accord variants.

The largest and most powerful SUV in Honda history, the 2023 Pilot is the ultimate family drive with rugged new styling, more passenger and cargo space and a class-leading combination of off-road capability and sporty on-road dynamics. It adopts 18inch alloy wheels on the EX and EX-L grades and 20-inch alloys on the Sport grade.

The Pilot can accommodate seven or eight passengers, depending on the grade, with an adjustable middle seat. Intuitive technology has been smartly integrated with a focus on the driver, including a new nine-inch, touchscreen audio display. A must-have feature is the PA system that allows the driver/front passenger to communicate with rear occupants. The electric parking brake features brake hold during stop-start in heavy traffic.

The all-new 24-valve QUAD CAM 3.5-litre V6 engine produces 285hp at 6,100rpm and 355Nm torque at 5,000rpm. Paired to this is the 10-speed automatic transmission. Normal, Sport, Econ, Trail, Sand and TOW are the drive modes available for all your adventures.

The Honda Sensing suite offers a range of active safety and driver-assistive technologies.

New colour options include Radiant Red Metallic for the exterior and Mineral Brown for the interior.

The all-new Accord’s advanced premium hybrid, e:HEV, has been introduced to the region for the first time. It’s equipped with a 2.0-litre direct injection Atkinson cycle engine that produces a total system power output of 204hp and 355Nm torque. Paddle shifters control deceleration during one-pedal mode. In this way more energy can be recovered and smoother drivability is maintained. As a self-charging hybrid that makes its own

electricity, you’ll never need to connect to the mains – this really is the driver’s hybrid.

The 1.5-litre VTEC Turbo petrol variant produces 194hp and 260Nm torque.

Longer and sleeker, with a low horizontal beltline and a long, powerful front end, the saloon backs up its new looks with more confident and refined dynamics, improved responsiveness and a more fun-to-drive personality.

The new Accord uses premium materials throughout the cabin, especially on touchpoints, with close attention paid to the operation of all switchgear and controls for a premium feel. The uncluttered and beautifully simple design provides maximum room and total comfort in which to enjoy the premium Bose centrepoint sound system. Memory seats are a great addition that can be set to the individual remote key fobs, so you never have to adjust your seat again.

The massive 12.3-inch Display Audio with a full-colour, touchscreen interface splits into two zones: A zone is the main, and B zone can be swiped up or down to view different menu options and information.

The Accord is the first Honda model to incorporate Google built in. You can communicate with your Accord remotely from your smartphone via the Honda CONNECT app.

The Honda Sensing suite features active safety and driverassistive technologies. The Driver Attention Monitor continually monitors and assesses – if the driver is becoming inattentive, it encourages taking a break.

PEAK PERFORMANCE

Apple has updated its high-end flagship iPhones with the release of the new iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

It’s that time of the year again and Apple has made a few notable changes to its latest top-tier handsets warranting them the ‘Pro’ moniker.

For starters, the new smartphones have been designed using aerospace-grade titanium that’s strong yet lightweight, making them Apple’s lightest Pro lineup yet. Both models also feature a new, refined brush texture, contoured edges and the thinnest borders on an iPhone.

The models come in 6.1-inch (15 Pro) and 6.7-inch (15 Pro Max) sizes that flawlessly showcase the Super Retina XDR display with Always-On and ProMotion technologies that provide an exceptional viewing experience.

Among the latest upgrades, the all-new Action button replaces the previous single-function switch that was used solely to toggle between ring and silent. The Action button now lets users assign additional options such as quick access to the camera or flashlight, activating Voice Memos, or other accessibility features.

Making life a lot more convenient for iPhone owners is the introduction of the USB-C port. A universally accepted standard for charging and transferring data, it now allows the same cable

to charge iPhone, Mac, iPad, etc. Both models are powered by the A17 Pro chip that brings top performance and capabilities.

Impressive camera upgrades enable the equivalent of seven pro lenses with incredible image quality. These include a more advanced 48MP Main camera system that now supports the new super-high-resolution 24MP default. Improvements have been made to portraits with Focus and Depth Control, Night mode and Smart HDR. Also, an all-new 5x Telephoto camera has been added exclusively on iPhone 15 Pro Max.

A TIMELY UPGRADE

Apple has unveiled the advanced new Apple Watch Series 9 – which also achieves a significant environmental milestone.

Since its launch eight years ago, the Apple Watch has become the favoured choice in the wearable technology sector. Building on that strong foundation is the Series 9, the first-ever carbonneutral Apple product and part of the Apple 2030 strategy. With a clear focus on optimised performance, Apple continues to take the reins for the processing power of its products into its own hands and that is showcased in the all-new custom Apple silicon S9 SiP – its most superior watch chip yet. Stepping up the level of functionality is a new four-core Neural Engine that can process machine learning tasks up to twice as fast, in comparison to the Series 8. The chip’s power efficiency allows the watch to maintain an allday 18-hour battery life, which can be extremely helpful on days that you might be unable to easily access a charging point.

A new standout feature introduced with this model is the double tap gesture. It allows users to easily control the watch using just one hand and without touching the display. Users can now tap the index finger and thumb of their watch hand together twice to quickly and conveniently perform common actions. The maximum brightness of the watch’s display is up to 2,000 nits, making it much easier to read text in bright sunlight.

For the first time on Apple Watch, Siri can now process requests that do not require information from the internet, such as starting a workout or setting a timer.

The Series 9 is available in 41mm and 45mm sizes. Starlight, Midnight, silver, Product Red and a new pink in aluminium, as well as a stainless-steel case in gold, silver and graphite. ✤

In Conversation with… Richard Paul Gough

The new Group General Manager of Euro Motors talks 25 years of success, the future ofAI and electric vehicles and his dream car journey.

fact magazine 58 • 5 OVER 5

In your opinion, what do buyers look for when purchasing a vehicle? How does Euro Motors cater to these requirements?

First off, it's got to be the car. We're really, really lucky at Euro Motors. We've got a tremendous selection of cars from Jaguar Land Rover to BMW to Ferrari, Maserati right up to Rolls-Royce. There are some beautiful cars to select. Secondly, it's down to the customer service. Customers want someone they can trust, someone they know will be there, someone that's going to be able to support them in their journey of actually buying this car.

So how do Euro Motors actually cater for this? Well, one of the tremendous things about Euro Motors is that we've been here for 25 years, so we've got a real legacy of customer service and trust. We're a well-known brand that can actually look after customers. More than that, we're very, very well known for innovation. Some of the next stages of innovation relate to AI and the introduction of AI to improve our customer experience, our customer journey and our responses to customer inquiries.

Many are switching to hybrid and electric cars these days. How prepared are car manufacturers and dealers for the electric revolution?

BMW are unique in the Kingdom of Bahrain in the fact that we offer ConnectedDrive on all our BMW products. This is also something that we're going to bring to Bahrain for Jaguar Land Rover in 2024. ConnectedDrive has tremendous features and one of the top features is a display of our very own BMW charging network that we're implementing across the Kingdom. It offers a number of other top features as well, so we will soon be uniquely placed, if anybody is looking for a hybrid or electric vehicle, to provide these services.

Are there any developments coming at Euro Motors that our readers must watch out for?

It's really important to talk about some of the innovations that we're going to bring to Euro Motors over the next 12 months. It will really give us a competitive advantage over other car dealers in the Kingdom. Some of the technology that we're bringing, not just around AI but around our customer journey, is going to be fantastic. One area where we’re really great at Euro Motors is the team, the people across every department. We've got some real, real superstars in every area of our business. It's fantastic to be a part of this team, they're one of the things that guarantee our innovation, our brilliant customer service – they all cater to our customers’ needs and match the products that we look after.

Are there any new vehicles coming that you’re particularly excited about?

We've got some amazing new products coming in. So, it's very important to reference the new cars that we've got coming, from the new Range Rover SVR to the Rolls-Royce Spectre to the BMW 5 Series and i5, fantastic car, to the Ferrari Purosangue and the Maserati GT, all coming over the next few months.

What is your dream car and where in the world would you want to drive it?

We're really, really spoiled for choice. It would probably have to be some kind of classic, like a classic Maserati 3500 GT, maybe a 1958 or a 1960 version, or a nice Ferrari, a 355. In terms of the journey, it'd probably be through Italy, either Milan up to Lake Como and around the lakes or down the Amalfi Coast or in the south around Sicily. There are some great car journeys to be had across Italy and what a brilliant brand to do it with – Maserati! ✤

The operational process was a labour of love, involving meticulous attention to detail, sourcing the finest ingredients and creating an enchanting atmosphere. We encountered challenges in capturing the essence of Italian cuisine while infusing it with local influences, but with the hands-on involvement of Italian Chef Simona from Tuscany, we made it. We will create and stay focussed on quality, and aim for guest satisfaction, ensuring that the new restaurant becomes a memorable and sought-after dining destination at The Domain Hotel and Spa.

What can diners expect at Le Domain?

Diners can expect to be transported to the heart of Italy. The food is a symphony of flavours, crafted with passion and using only the freshest, highest quality ingredients. From handmade pastas to succulent meats and decadent desserts, every dish is a work of art. The ambience is a fusion of elegance and warmth, with soft lighting, rustic accents and a welcoming atmosphere that invites guests to savour every moment and feel as if they are dining in the middle of Tuscany.

The Domain Hotel and Spa has shifted from being a familyfriendly to an adults-only destination. How has this been

reflected in the culinary offering? Also, can you tell us more about the Romance menu?

The transformation of The Domain Hotel and Spa into an adultsonly destination has allowed us to elevate our menu to new heights. We have embraced a more refined and sophisticated approach, carefully curating dishes that cater to discerning adult palates. The Romance menu (a romantic three-course dinner offer) is a celebration of love and indulgence, featuring exquisite dishes infused with passion and sensuality. From aphrodisiac ingredients to intimate table settings, every detail is designed to create an enchanting and unforgettable dining experience.

What is your signature dish?

I am thrilled and honoured to present my newly crafted signature menu, inspired by the exquisite tastes and flavours of Tuscany. As a chef who’s had the opportunity to have Michelin-star experience, I have meticulously curated this culinary experience to showcase the essence of this magnificent region. Our menu highlights the freshest and highest quality ingredients, expertly combined to create dishes that pay homage to Tuscan traditions. Each plate is a harmonious symphony of taste. Just like our homemade Ravioli, garnished with grated parmesan cheese, fresh herbs and tomato sauce with a drizzle of olive oil. The beauty of homemade ravioli is that you can get creative with different fillings, sauces and shapes to create a very unique and delicious dish. Our aim is to transport our guests to the rolling hills and rustic charm of Tuscany, enveloping them in warmth and elegance. We invite you to join us on this gastronomic journey. ✤

AN ASIAN AFFAIR

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT
A flawless balance between flavour, texture and ambience is what Fernanda Langhammer found when she dined at re/Asian Cuisine by Wolfgang Puck.
CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

The song On Top of the World by Imagine Dragons started playing in my head as soon as we entered the elevator at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay on our way to re/Asian Cuisine by Wolfgang Puck. The restaurant is located on the 50th floor (the trigger for the music popping in my head). The elevator ride was smooth, and we reached 'the top of the world' in a few seconds. As soon as we entered the eatery, the stunning view of Bahrain's skyline, many floors below, was breathtaking – we took a moment to absorb such beautiful scenery. We were lucky to be seated right next to the glass wall, allowing us to enjoy the stunning cityscape with its shimmering night lights. The décor follows an art-deco-inspired design with a minimalist, modern twist. Magnificent crystal chandeliers and the large wooden sushi counter caught my attention. You can sit by the counter or enter deeper into the room where you have dimly lit areas offering privacy. The vibe is a definite perk at this place – the resident DJ keeps the music at the right volume with perfectly tailored beats for a lounge/fine-dining atmosphere.

Regional Executive Chef Brian Becher and Chef Kiyoshi Udagawa are the maestros of the dishes that re/Asian offers in an innovative menu that gives a modern spin to traditional Asian recipes. That night, we also had the pleasure of meeting Rumena Begum, the restaurant's director, who is very passionate about re/Asian's menu (and knows it intimately) and helped us choose our dishes. The dining experience started with Priya stopping by our table with her beverage stroller (or, in her words, her moving bar). She offered us two new signature drinks: Goldtini, made with bubbles and edible gold, and Hot and Numbing, with spicy orangey hints. The first was quite sophisticated, while the other hit like a liquid punch; they were delicious!

A selection of palate teasers appeared on our table. Kimchi with crunchy Chinese cabbage bathed in peanut sauce kicked off our taste buds' journey. The Jackfruit Bao had a delicate filling in a super soft dough. When dipped in the accompanying sweet and tangy sauce, it became one of the best bites of the entire night (there were many) – comforting and adventurous. The Trio of Veggies was a selection of vegetables such as lotus root, radish and carrot infused with citrus juices – the presentation was super cute with a lovely rabbit-shaped beetroot. The Edamame Tofu, another strong contender as best bite, was a creamy green delight that was soft but firm with a gorgeous edamame flavour –I love tofu and edamame, so this was a marriage made in heaven for me. We also had the Crispy Rice Vegetable, a combination of five crispy rice squares topped with different toppings such as asparagus and eggplant – they were crunchy, and each had a completely different texture and flavour, yum!

It was time for the mains. With so many options and the possibility of having most of the dishes transformed for my vegetarian preference, Rumena was a star when she took care of my order. My dining companion is a raw-fish enthusiast, so he opted for the Sea Bream Ceviche, beautifully created with ginger, lime, carrot and yuzu, and Hamachi Sashimi. The ceviche was citrusy and the Hamachi was fresh with the expected allusion of oceanic flavour. He also had the Braised Beef Short Ribs cooked for several hours in Rendang style (when the meat is cooked and braised in a

fact magazine 66 • CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

herb and spice mixture until the liquid evaporates). The beef was tender, rich in flavours and melted in his mouth.

I had the Thai Green Curry with Tofu. Well, I already mentioned my love for tofu, but I haven't said how much I adore Thai cuisine – so this was the perfect dish Rumena could have chosen. It had the right amount of spiciness combined with crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside tofu, teamed with sugar snaps, green beans, spinach, coriander leaves and peanuts in a lush green sauce – I finished every last bite of it! I guess that says it all. We also had two sides: Crispy Miso Artichoke and Hunan Eggplant & Snow Pea Pods (a must-try if you like eggplants and even if you don't!). We finished our feast with the refreshing Halo Halo dessert made with coconut tapioca pearls, mango sorbet and crispy rice. Chef Brian came to talk to us right when it arrived at our table, and said that even when someone tells him they don't have space for dessert, there is always room for Halo Halo – he was absolutely right! It was the perfect end to a magnificent display of culinary artistry with dishes made with many hidden details to make them memorable. If you are looking for an eatery with extraordinary food and a fantastic ambience, re/Asian Cuisine by Wolfgang Puck is the place to go! The restaurant can be booked for private events such as corporate lunch or dinner, family gatherings, ladies' lunch, etc. and offers customised menus. ✤

THE PLACE TO ‘GO’

Go Bistro by La Table Krug is the slightly bigger, definitely bolder version of The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain’s bijou restaurant. Liz O’Reilly heads to the property’s latest pop-up to find out what it’s all about.

• DINING DELIGHT
DINING DELIGHT •

Inside the hotel, La Table Krug seats up to 16 guests and is available for private bookings. So, to make its gorgeous European-style menu more widely available, Go Bistro was born and I am excited to learn more. Found at the Nikmati location, gone are the Perspex sheets, which allowed a view of the beach, to be replaced by deep sage walls adorned with decorative moulding boasting artistic flourishes. Numerous pictures, some arty, some amusing, evoke the atmosphere of an old-fashioned Paris bistro and hardwood flooring scattered with thick rugs adds to the sense of luxury. Gentle music plays in the background and crystal lamps illuminate the tables. The seating is velvet covered and comfortable, inviting us to settle in and relax, a suggestion for which we need no second bidding.

First to arrive at the table, alongside a basket of crunchy bread hot from the kitchen, is a pretty and oh-so flavoursome amuse bouche. A small, perfect sphere of mashed avocado topped with milk skim (the froth from boiling milk) and Beluga caviar and a crisp, earthy squid ink tuile. The caviar adds a certain je ne sais quoi and I am very happy for an excuse to tuck into the delicious bread. Our starters are two of the restaurant’s signature dishes. White asparagus with a delicious, creamy Hollandaise sauce and salmon tartare.

The fat, juicy asparagus – a personal favourite – is cooked to a perfect sweet state, its earthy goodness tempered by the creamy decadence of the sauce. Topped with fried capers and croutons, this is a typically French appetiser that perfectly whets the appetite for what’s to come.

The salmon tartare sits on a bed of creamy avocado and is topped

• DINING DELIGHT

with perfect pearls of salmon roe – I love the delicious pop as they burst on your tongue. The high-quality, Scottish salmon weaves a tale of distant, mist-shrouded lochs while a citrussy dill dressing makes the flavour dance and I keep going back for more.

The classic bistro dish of Steak-Frites is, in my opinion, possibly one of the world’s greatest creations, so I am delighted to see a 250g Wagyu ribeye with Béarnaise sauce and French fries heading my way. The meat is beautifully marbled and, cooked medium-rare, literally melts in the mouth, the abundant juices rendering the flesh buttery and an absolute delight. Here I must confess that, much as I enjoy Béarnaise and know that connoisseurs consider it the perfect accompaniment to this dish, such is the quality of the steak that I forego the embellishment and just revel in the meaty flavour and texture.

We also try the Supreme de Poulet au Foie Gras – chicken supreme with duck liver and mushroom tartine served with potato purée and Albufera sauce. The mixed mushrooms lend the dish an air of the forest and the gorgeously creamy sauce accentuates the fatty richness of the pâté and the succulence of the chicken. Risotto Aux Champignons – arborio risotto, field mushrooms, truffle scent and mascarpone cheese – is, for me, the star dish of the evening. The rice is perfectly rendered – al dente and fluffy but at the same time creamy and, with the delicate mascarpone tang, almost like a thick, comforting broth. The delightful scent of the truffles reaches my nose before I even see the dish, causing my taste buds to perk up in anticipation. This dish is true decadence and comfort food at the same time and would certainly be my Go Bistro 'go to'.

With the table cleared, we sit a while to let our food settle and take in our surroundings with the signature mocktail, the Bistronomic

– a tangy and refreshing combination of orange, grapefruit and caramel syrup that I would happily recommend if you decide not to indulge in the venue’s sparkling namesake. I wander outside to enjoy the perfect evening view of the beach, the waves gently rushing up onto the soft white sand, before heading back inside to see what the dessert menu holds.

No meal is complete without a sweet ending and Go Bistro has a selection of classics as well as an impressive cheese board. The crème brûlée with its telltale black flecks of fresh vanilla pods is delicious, its burnt sugar top emitting that satisfying crack as I smash my way through to the custardy goodness beneath. A liberal garnish of almond pistachio biscotti and fruits, including big, juicy blackberries, renders the dish extra special and myself and my dining companion are ready to do battle for the last spoonful. And the chocolate mousse – oh the chocolate mousse! At 70% it is so rich, so flavourful, so absolutely decadently delicious, made all the more impressive by the addition of sweet raspberries and strawberries and a super-crunchy, nutty biscuit. Who could resist? Not me, that’s for sure.

If you’re looking for a treat, and make no mistake Go Bistro by La Table Krug is definitely that, then this is the place for classic cuisine in a beautiful setting and what’s even better, the prices are really reasonable.✤

IT TAKES A VILLAGE

A lavish buffet, spirited entertainment and zesty vibes are what Melissa Nazareth experienced at The Village Brunch.

ON THE MENU

Downtown Rotana’s new brunch has all the trappings of a perfect weekend activity. On a late Friday morning, I drove to this city-centre hotel located in Manama. As I stepped into the lobby, I first noticed the collection of eye-catching artworks. I took a moment to admire them before heading to the eighth floor, where The Village Brunch is hosted.

Al Maha Ballroom was transformed into a charming little village. A fountain adorned with decorative flamingos welcomed me. The space was beautifully designed, with cute illustrated wall hangings and an arrow signpost, all replicating a village square –‘Downtown Square’. The hustle and bustle of guests and servers complemented the concept.

The Game Zone, located at the far end, had a foosball table, giant Jenga and tic-tac-toe. Usually, brunches have kids’ corners, but I love the way Downtown thinks – why shouldn’t the adults have some fun of their own? There’s also a dedicated space for smaller kids on the other side, with a big TV playing cartoons and some toys. The buffet area leads onto the hall, where you can sit and dine. It has just the right number of chairs and tables (covered in cute red-checkered tablecloths) to offer a lavish yet intimate and exclusive experience. I walked in to find the live band setting the stage on fire with their sparks of talent. They were accompanied by a DJ who also had an excellent selection of music to match the vibe. The two alternated their sets throughout the brunch, so the energy never dipped.

fact magazine 73 ON THE MENU •

My companions had arrived by this time and we were ready to begin the feast-ivities. You will be spoiled for choice at The Village Brunch, which features all your staples from sushi, salads and antipasti to live counters, carving stations and much more, as well as a wide selection of desserts. Those who prefer to start with something breakfast-ish – after all, it’s a brunch – can go for eggs cooked in various ways – Benedict, on toast, devilled and more.

Before we raided the buffet, we got ourselves some drinks. The bar serves soft and selected beverages. There’s also a grass wall (counter), so to speak. You ring the bell, which we did and voilà! A flap opened and out came a hand with a glass of sparkling grape! The Village Brunch is all about such fun, interactive elements – at one point, we spotted a server moving around the tables, distributing mini popcorn cones from a stand he had hoisted on his back. I started with my favourite – sushi. Maki rolls, salmon and shrimp nigiri, tuna and salmon sashimi and more. The fish was really fresh and had an umami flavour. Even my vegan companions enjoyed the veggie options. Next, I raided the taco station or ‘Tex Mex Shop’ – the counters are named to resemble shops in a village square. One after the other, I demolished the crunchy taco shells loaded with flavorful beef and topped with creamy, refreshing guacamole. There was a chicken option too. These were hands down my favourite food, which is saying something because there was so much on offer and it was all so good. I can’t remember how many nachos I must have had. Drizzled with warm, salty cheese, this was such a hit that I dropped a green token in the bowl – every station had green and red coins to elicit guest feedback.

Ready for mains, I visited the meat station. Oh, the wonders that awaited! I piled my plate with tender beef brisket and ribs. They were cooked to perfection and the flavourful juices still intact flooded my mouth as I ate. I particularly enjoyed the chicken, which was cooked to the right temperature with a crispy skin that was coated with a subtly sweet marinade. My companion went in for a beef slider and was all praises. Ribeye and tenderloin steaks were being cooked just outside on the balcony; the seating area also has an outdoor extension that might be great to explore in the cooler months. Not a big meat eater? Try the seabass, moist, flaky and well-seasoned.

As we tucked in, we grooved to the phenomenal music that matched our feast. I discovered on scanning the hall that the energy was contagious. Families, couples and groups of friends, all swaying, foot tapping and finger clicking. There came a moment when our enthusiastic servers invited us to join them on the dance floor. Even the introverts at our table willingly obliged. The band knew well how to read the room. One moment on stage and the next among the crowd. They even humoured the karaoke heads in the house.

The fun continued, intensified with drinks and bites, this time from the antipasti and salad stations. From moreish cheeses, such as brie, blue and cranberry, to a charcuterie extravaganza. I particularly enjoyed the Caprese Salad that was made with the creamiest mozzarella ever. My daring foodie friend made trips to the raw bar, which featured a selection of fresh seafood such as clams, oysters and crab. He was ecstatic to feed us the unique seafood pasta he created at the live station. You can choose from a variety of ingredients, and the chef will cook it to your

preference. We all loved his rendition!

The Village Brunch runs every Friday from 12.30pm to 5pm, with food available until 4pm and drinks thereafter, which gives guests sufficient time to try out the lavish display while taking muchneeded breaks to unwind and savour the experience.

Remember the fountain? So, as we drew close to the end of this enjoyable feast, a member of the staff came to our table with numbered tokens. We had to pick one per head and then, drop it into the fountain as we made a wish. Make sure you wish well because there’s a raffle draw based on this. Three winners took home fabulous prizes that day.

Before we said goodbye, we toured the buffet one last time, this round for desserts. I felt like I’d stepped into the cottage made of sweeties from Hansel And Gretel . The variety, from ice creams and cakes to mousses, puddings and crumbles, was mind-blowing. Crêpes, made-to-order, with a range of exciting toppings such as fruit compotes, Nutella, caramel and nuts, beckoned. Colourful meringues, mini cakes, fresh fruit, date pudding for that traditional Gulf touch… it was endless, as was our happiness when we drove home that evening. If you’re seeking a great time with amazing food and drinks – which is what brunch is all about – head to The Village Brunch.

When I learned the identity of some of this prestigious property’s previous guests, I couldn’t help but be excited. Everyone who’s anyone, from the Rolling Stones to Elizabeth Taylor and even Nelson Mandela, have passed through the elegant doors since The Dolder Grand opened in 1899. From the outside The Dolder Grand presents contradictions, the 124-year-old main building resembles a fairytale castle, while two later wing extensions, added during the 20042008 renovation by renowned architect Sir Norman Foster, display a modern design that somehow doesn’t jar but rather blends with the history.

Inside, you’ll find a renowned art collection that is worth a visit all by itself and, on checking in, guests can access an iPad art tour giving information about the pieces and their creators.

Accommodation

My arrival and check in went smoothly and soon I was headed for my home for the next three days. The Junior Suite at The Dolder Grand Zurich provides an immersive experience that seamlessly combines comfort and sophistication. The suite features a lavish king-size bed adorned with exquisite linens, offering an oasis of tranquillity. Adding to the sense of modern indulgence, electric curtains allow for effortless adjustment of natural light, enhancing the atmosphere with a touch of technological elegance.

The suite's windows frame a captivating forest view, where the lush panorama of verdant woods invites you to unwind in the embrace of nature. The interplay of sunlight filtering through the trees created an ambience of serenity, providing a breathtaking backdrop to my stay.

A Bang & Olufsen TV graced the space, offering a superior audiovisual experience. Its sleek design and impeccable sound quality added a touch of luxury, inviting me to unwind in style.

In the generously appointed bathroom, a selection of curated toiletries from the renowned Dr Burgener brand pampered my senses, ensuring a lavish bathing experience, which was made all the more special by the fabulous woodland view from the Jacuzzi. symphony of flavours and textures, showcasing the finest Swiss ingredients. The amuse-bouches, with options such as egg salad with seaweed and mustard, and tofu-fresh cheese with sesame, shoos and chilli, were small bites of pure delight that left me longing for more.

The highlight was undoubtedly the lobster dish. The delicate balance of the crustacean’s sweetness with the refreshing notes of melon, the aromatic touch of bronze fennel and the subtle heat of green curry created a harmonious dance on my palate. Equally memorable was the veal with chanterelles – my favourite mushroom – accompanied by Emmentaler cheese, lettuce and horseradish. Each plate was a canvas of creativity, a culinary masterpiece that spoke volumes about the chef's skill and dedication. The ever-evolving menu ensured that every meal was a unique adventure. Knowing that the offerings would change added an element of anticipation to every dining experience, making each meal a cherished memory.

At blooms, the second restaurant at The Dolder Grand, a different kind of culinary magic awaited. Set amidst the hotel's enchanting gardens, the restaurant's concept revolves around seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. The garden itself is a testament to the dedication and passion of the culinary team, as they hand-pick the freshest ingredients to craft their dishes.

The menu at blooms is a celebration of nature's bounty, featuring dishes that are not only visually stunning but also bursting with flavours. The attention to detail in every presentation is remarkable, and the freshness of the ingredients shines through in every bite. Dining in the midst of the gardens added an ethereal touch to the experience, connecting me with nature as I savoured every delectable morsel.

Mornings at The Dolder Grand started with a trip to Saltz restaurant, designed by artist Rolf Sachs, where a sumptuous breakfast spread awaited. The wide selection of freshly baked bread, pastries, fruits, cheeses and cold cuts ensured that every breakfast was a wholesome and delightful affair. The attentive service and serene atmosphere set the perfect tone for a leisurely start to the day.

However, the true star at Saltz, and a dish I won’t forget in a hurry, was the iconic Veal à la Zurichoise. A quintessential Swiss comfort food, it was executed to perfection, with tender veal in a creamy mushroom and white grape sauce. The flavours were rich and comforting, a true homage to Swiss culinary heritage.

Relaxation and Rejuvenation

A stay at The Dolder Grand would be incomplete without a visit to its renowned spa, which is a sanctuary of luxury and rejuvenation, designed to envelop guests in a world of serenity. Its opulent rooms are exquisitely appointed, offering a tranquil ambience that sets the tone for relaxation. Upon entering, the soft and lavish bathrobe they offered immediately added to the sense of comfort and indulgence, setting the stage for a truly

The therapists are true professionals, possessing a wealth of expertise that ensures every treatment is tailored to perfection. During my visit, I was treated to a caviar facial by La Prairie, an experience that transcended mere pampering. The therapist was exceptional – not only did she administer a sumptuous facial, but also provided personalised skincare advice and meticulously analysed my skin's needs.

From the plush bathrobe to the skilful therapists, every element of The Dolder Grand Zurich's spa contributes to a journey of relaxation and self-care. The caviar facial, coupled with the therapist's insights, elevated the experience to a whole new level of luxury and rejuvenation, leaving me feeling pampered and radiant.

The seamless glide through the picturesque surroundings of Zurich was an unforgettable experience, allowing me to effortlessly traverse the enchanting, forested landscapes and take in the stunning vistas. CLASSICAL INSPIRATION MEETS HOLLYWOOD STYLE

The BALLY Fall/Winter 2023 collection celebrates a modern take on the masterful Swiss craftsmanship of leather goods and accessories that stretches back to the mid-19th century.

• FASHION FOCUS

Astrong, elevated silhouette for women and men merges tropes of Hollywood past and present. Ready-to-wear statements for day and night reflect the bygone grandeur of Da Vinci’s Casa degli Atellani, as its dark wood balustrades, scrolled ironwork, mosaic floors and opulent marble fireplaces create a rich dialogue with the season’s autumnal palette. Elusive characters embody a cinematic allure, as a duality of comfort and modern elegance abounds: structured leather coats and sophisticated tailoring is layered with fine-gauge ribbed knitwear and silk pyjama separates to create contemporary expressions of effortless luxury.

In a subtle play of depth, decoration and trompe l’oeil, both the women’s and men’s wardrobes combine the rigour of smart tailoring with sleek leather separates, the gold BALLY emblem and bevelled Bally Spell, and the nostalgic touch of archival prints. San Crispino, the patron saint of shoemakers, appears illustrated on satin in an archival scarf print from the 1920s, as a singular graphic statement amongst sleek moments of ‘corduroy’ suede, embossed python and lizard-effect leathers, plush shearling, quilted patent and velvet. Stonewashed denim and pinstriped English wools add elements of contrasting casual and formalwear, lifted by harmonious accessories in jewel tones of burgundy, ochre and deep ocean blue.

The BALLY Fall/Winter 2023 accessories collection creates a bold counterpart to the silhouette, fusing classical European and Western influences in tactile finishes from velvet and suede thigh-high boots in soft earth tones, to bright embossed ‘croc’ and patent handbags and weekender styles.

ON THE RECORD

POP/INDIE ROCK GUTS

American singer and songwriter, Oliva Rodrigo, has come out with her second studio album, via Geffen Records. A high school musical-style creation, it touches on your typical teenage themes, from boyfriends and breakups to identity crises.

Olivia’s voice has a young quality, with opinionated and angsty undertones, which complements the vibe of the album. Ballad Of A Homeschooled Girl features an unbridled drum set coupled with Olivia’s shouty tone that matches the frustration behind not fitting in.

All tracks have a catchy, addictive vibe. In fact, the singles Vampire and Bad Idea Right? debuted atop the Billboard charts and have taken YouTubers and TikTokers by storm, as popular background scores. Get Him Back! , another single, also stands out.

Lacy , a slow-paced song, offers variety, with the acoustic guitar matching its easy-going energy. However, it’s in keeping with the overall theme – you sense self-restraint in the singer’s voice, underpinned by what can only be teenage passion.

Whether you’re young and in love or seeking a flash back to the days when you were, GUTS is the rollercoaster to ride.

DANCE MUSIC/ EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC

Playing Robots Into Heaven

If you’re someone who enjoys exploring unique approaches to music, then you must listen to this sixth studio album by English singer and songwriter James Blake. The deliberate choices on textures, from scratchy percussion and liquid synths to background choirs and electronic elements, all point toward the experimental nature of this release via Republic and Polydor Records. Tell Me is such a club anthem, with foottapping beats and techno tunes that will have you throwing shapes on the dance floor from the get-go.

Fall Back will liven up the mood of any lounge in seconds. The clicking like that of wooden tools being hit together, electronic sets and echoing vocals, all conjure up a trance-like mood.

He’s Been Wonderful is reminiscent of the quirky keyboard creations by Ross in the popular sitcom Friends – but, of course, in a good way – it’s futuristic. The title track numbs the listener and is in keeping with the overall acoustics of the album.

Blake dips into his dubstep background on this album, bringing in elements of techno, house and ambient. However, he doesn’t stray away from his signature pensiveness, causing the listener to mentally levitate.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY Making It So: A Memoir

Beloved actor Sir Patrick Stewart finally puts pen to paper for a memoir that promises to delve into his life from his humble beginnings, in a home environment that led him to become a vocal advocate against domestic abuse, to mega stardom on stage and screen. Along the way, the Shakespearean great has garnered multiple awards, appeared in seriously diverse settings from X Men to Sesame Street , and temporarily gained a much-loved rescue dog, Ginger Girl. We can’t wait to find out more.

CRIME DRAMA Judgment Prey

The New York Times #1 bestselling author is back with another case for Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers. The seemingly senseless shooting of a judge and his two young sons has local police and FBI stumped. There could be a monetary motive but, after a life on the bench, Judge Alex Sand had plenty of enemies. As each lead proves flawed, Davenport and Flowers are tasked with doing what no-one else seems able to, chasing down the killer despite some puzzling obstruction.
