Er trok een vreemde tinteling van spanning door mijn lichaam. Daar stond ik naast mijn vader vlak bij de ingang van het Binnenhof. Zo dadelijk zou de Gouden Koets langskomen met koningin Juliana. We hadden het op school gehad over de troonrede, maar ik was gefascineerd door de Koets. Mijn vader had een dag vrij genomen en nam me mee naar Den Haag. De koets kwam de hoek om. Je voelde de spanning groter worden bij de duizenden mensen langs de route. De koningin zwaaide naar me, maar ik had alleen oog voor het koninklijk glinsterende Rijtuig. Je vergeet gewoon dat het beschilderd hout is, beplakt met bladgoud. De binnenkant is bekleed met zijde en op het plafond staat een dankwoord van de bewoners van Amsterdam die Koningin Wilhelmina de koets in 1898 cadeau gaven. De koets is alweer voorbij, maar dit jochie van acht is een enerverende ervaring rijker.

A strange tingle of excitement floated through my body. I stood beside my father near the entrance of ‘Het Binnenhof’. In a few moments, the ‘Gouden Koets’, the Golden Coach, would be passing by with Queen Juliana in it. At school we’d talked about the throne speech, but I was fascinated by the ‘Koets’. My father had taken a day off and took me to The Hague. The carriage came round the corner. You could feel the tension increase in the thousands of people along the route. The Queen waved at me, but I was only interested in the glittering Royal coach. You forget that it is painted wood, covered with gold leaf. The inside is lined with silk and on the upper surface are words of thanks from the inhabitants of Amsterdam, who gave the coach as a gift to Queen Wilhelmina in 1898. The coach had already passed, but this eight year old kid had had an exciting new experience.
