I am Fabrizio, I’m 27 years old and I am one of the many italian Architects. My father is a renovation company director and my mother is a nursery teacher. Being curious by nature, I have always tried to learn as much as possible from those realities that have always surrounded me: the Architecture and the Childhood. When the school finished, every summer since I was 14, I always enjoyed going and observing the different constructions sites, working with plumbers, eletricians and bricklayers. When I finished my surveying studies at 19, I realised that the surveyor life didn’t belong to me. My dad’s work could wait. Year by year I had been looking at so many different houses with their different problems and their characteristics, but there was a special one, that changed everything. It was in Arena street. It had been designed with so much precision and care, that I still remember it: it is deeply impressed on my mind. I decided to study Architecture. Wonderful years with great people, lecturers and fellows. In this period I learnt to look at the architecture as an essential art. It is able to express itself in the most disparate ways and embrace so many disciplines, linking them together. I like to think of the archictect as a wizard who connects all the dots and create a liveable place, suitable for the customer’s needs. Once I graduated, after an Erasmus in Alicante and a thesis on a Montessori kindergarten, I was excited at the idea of being able to build something real from sketch, so I started working with my father. Time passed and project after project I realized I was missing something ... I wanted to expand my knowledge, not to relegate myself to the interior Architecture. After finding a job as a baby sitter for self-support, I continued my studies with a master’s degree in civil architecture in which I was able to design modular buildings for the troubled populations of Mozambique. Looking back to my academic years, I recognise that the most beautiful thing about architecture training is the universal approach, that is applicable in every fields of life. The continuous research and development in the most disparate areas of interest lead me inevitably towards the search of new experiences, from graphic to photography, throught programming and design and even cooking, thanks to contamination between arts.

ISOLACHENONCE’ THE NURSERY

Isolachenoncè Milano is a nursery born in 1994, which has changed several locations since its opening date. The latest in chronological order required the conversion from an office space to a playgroung for children up to 7 years old. The functional program provided - A playground - A multifunctional area - An office - An adult bath - An external play space. - A flat serving dish The idea was to create a child-friendly space where everything was conceived for them. It was immediately thought to divide the space in two: a service block and a playground, maintaining a direct relationship between the parties. The game space with a plastic balls pool has been combined with the multifunctional space to optimize its use. Choice that has been highly appreciated by the parties later. The softened service block has been kept in relation to the remaining space through adult doors and passages for children’s exclusive use. It is also decided to maintain a constant visual contact between the zones thanks to the opening of two windows (one at adult height and one at child height), which are particularly useful in the insertion stages of infants inside the nest.

Isolachenoncè became a reference for the citizen, following the families at all the stages of child grow. The association start collaborate with the municipality of Milan in the organization of events for citizenship in the city with theatrical and musical performances, creative and artistic workshop and games.

FIDENZA A HISTORIC RELATION

Fidenza is a Emilian common whose fate could be taken as an example for many Italian towns. He touched his golden age in the Middle Ages as it was positioned along the Franchigena Street, traveled by pilgrims traveling from western Europe to Rome. Numerous buildings arose in the city of Emilia from the Middle Ages to the present, with more or less troubled stories. At present, however, the village has no longer the modern appeal of a time and the city is increasingly attracted by older people. Young people are forced to emigrate elsewhere. In contrast to this growing trend, it was decided to create spaces for a younger audience. Next to the historic building of the Orsoline mothers, it was decided to build a building that could interact with the past, while maintaining the existing structure unaltered.

The backbone of the project is the central big wall, which link the various parts of the building. In addition to connecting the old to the new, the diaphragm function also functions between the north and the south. Perpendicular to the septum, there is the secondary glazed distribution on the whole length, which separates the blocks of buildings between them, ensuring a clear separation of spaces while maintaining an internal lightness, given by the perimeters of galvanized and perforated sheet metal almost to float in the air to serve the spaces.

The septum seems to indicate a path between what it is and what it was, starting from the historic building of the orsoline whose functions remain those of the library, metaphorically what it was. The central building, diaphragmed in the spaces, through which it is passed for the discovery of the arts in practice. The final cube, the arrival of the trip, in which the works of emerging artists are regularly displayed, on a continuous spiral journey towards the exit at the foot of the cube, towards the amphitheater.

AFRICA: LEARNING BY ITSELF SELF CONSTRUCTION PROJECT FOR RURAL SETTLEMENTS.

How can be seen by many reports, Africa will be in the next years in a severe demographic crisis. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s population will increase of about 1 billion people by 2050, one of the most impressive in the world. The problem of Africa, however, are due to the scarcity of information that the population itself is not able to obtain. Misinformation that leads to a poor life quality and to a difficult access to a working world even more internationalised. Starting from the analysis of local customs and habits, a possible sustainable development of a hypothetical future village was also conceived, trying to combine traditional vernacular growth with a light planning that dictated some rules for continued growth and would lead to community creation familiar, able to communicate with each other. It has therefore been tried to form an alternative to the city that increasingly engages poor workers by forcing them to abandon their traditional lifestyle.

A new future from the past Until relatively recently, much of Africa has been among the economically least developed and least densely populated places on earth, replete with villages and rural communities. But Africa is changing rapidly, in its economy, trade and investment; in climate change; in conflict and stability; in urbanization, migration patterns and most of all in demographics. Demographics are key to Africa’s increasing centrality to the global development and growth agenda. In particular, the demographics of Africa’s children are experiencing a shift on a scale perhaps unprecedented in human history. Consider this: on current trends, almost 2 billion babies will be born in Africa in the next 35 years. Over the same period Africa’s under-18 population will increase by two thirds, reaching almost 1 billion by mid-century; and close to

half of the world population of children will be African by the end of the 21st century. Apparently the local authorities can’t deal with the present, letting alone the future urban popoulation that continuing to increase, and to the need for Africa to prepare for new urban configurations very different from the traditional concepts that see a city as an urban area within a clearly defined boundary and governed by a single municipal authority. Africa is different from what we know. We have the opportunity to learn from the mistakes of our modernity, creating the possibility of a future shaped on the african past.

TOTAL Nowadays, the population of the district of Caia, familiar to a low population density and a wide availability of fertile land, is experiencing a very rapid urbanization. This process sees a growing concentration of people in the rural town of Caia, Sena and Murraรงa. The rural town is defined as a hybrid

settlement pattern in which persisting elements of the rural world melt together with emerging urban characteristics. Vilas rurales, in fact, are traditionally rural contexts characterized by a dominance of vernacular settlement patterns and architectures. (

The District of Caia is located in the central region of Mozambique, Africa, in a strategic location at the crossroads between the EN1, the main infrastructure of the country, and the Tete-Caia axis running parallel to the railroad to Beira and Marromeu, the ER213 road and the Zambezi River. Capital of the district, la Vila de Caia (18.233ab, 20071), is located 400 km away from the city of Beira, capital of Sofala Province. Thanks to its position Caia lived full advantage of all the economic and social transformation processes that took place in Mozambique during the past recent years. With an area of 3.542km2 and a population of 115,612 inhabitants (2007) Caia is one of the most densely populated rural districts of Mozambique (33ab/ km2). The Caia district covers an extensive area located on the West bank of the Zambezi River. This surface consists of a floodplain that keeps mainly at an altitude between 0 and 100 m above sea level, rising when moving from East to SouthWest. Caia and Sena, the two major towns, are located at the top of the north-south route and have a fundamental role in relations between the interior of the district, characterized by rural life, and the urban character of the Caia-Sena axis. With reference to the total area of the district, settlements and infrastructure occupy approximately 3000 hectares, meaning about 0.85% of the surface. About 233,200 hectares (63.3% of the total) of the district is characterized mainly by herbaceous formation with scattered trees and is used for various activities such as hunting of small animals, chopping wood for domestic consumption and harvesting.

This vernacular housing typology, the traditional mudzi, consists of different small buildings, called palhotas, settled around a wide, circular open space. The settlement grows up progressively together with the family. In the case of a monogamous family structure, the palhota principal is reserved to the head of the family, his wife and little children. When children grow up, they move to their own palhotas, one for the women and one for men. Generally, at the age of fourteen, the now adult son builds his own guero, the palhota where he will receive his wife once

married. In the case of a polygamous family structure, the head of the household must equitably provide each wife with her own palhota. Indoor spaces are very intimate ones, used just for sleeping and for shielding themselves from sunlight or rain during the day. Moreover, indoor spaces are also used to store agricultural products. All daily activities are conducted outdoors, in the central open space where rewood to cook is placed, cereals and straw dry over a mesa alta, guests are received, domestic selling takes place, animals scratch about or are locked inside fences, and children play.

The Gamba-Deve/Licoma axis is configured as a large arboreal savannah, substantially flat, from which emerge isolated mountainous bodies of typical conical shape. The terrain retain a valley pattern with high peaks to the west, on the bottom of this wide valley flows the Mepuze river, 36.7 km long only in the Caia district, it has a sinuous course, from Licoma to Gamba-Deve, west-east direction. The Mepuze River is one of the five major rivers of the district and the second largest river basin. The presence of water is inconsistent throughout the year, concentrated in the rainy season. 22

In general, the vegetation cover is that of Zambesiane Forests, characterized by a low forest diversity. This forest is open or half open with the presence of isolated trees and bushes. As for the infrastructure network of the project area it is substantially the same with the network of road infrastructure such as the decreases in practice at two levels: the ED1 or the roadway between Gamba-Deve/Licoma, and the dense network of trails, that the population has created, it maintains and uses for domestic travel to Povoado. As for public services, schools and health centers, the policy

Palhotas have generally very small dimensions (2x3 m, 3x3 m, 3x4 m, 3,5x4,5 m) and the indoor space consists of just one room, without any articulation of the inner space. Sometimes it is possible to nd porches surrounding the palhotas completely or just on one side. These porches, which can also be closed in by wooden estacas or vegetable reeds, provide one of the most-used areas of the compound and it is usual to nd householders, eating or resting in the shade provided.

The state has had among its main aims of schooling of the population and the delivery of health services in rural districts. The state administration, however, does not have a detailed knowledge of the interior of the district, and does not the means to be able to acquire or maintain it. In fact, as at the time did the Portuguese, for the knowledge and management of rural territory, the state relies on traditional authorities. The choice of opening a new service takes place through the col-

laboration between traditional authorities and public administration. The district administration is therefore not in a position to be able to address independently the use of funds allocated from the outside and aimed at specific projects. As a result, public services are often understaffed or, when the staff is available, in the complete absence of quali ed personnel. Another relevant problem is the lack of material resources and inadequate facilities for teaching or exercising the health profession.

will increase the quantity and the quality of the services in the rural territory and require a less use of resources.

Regarding the location of the services on the territory, it should be reiterated how, the location, except for a few cases, actually corresponds to the presence of the population allowing the covering of the citizensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; needs for an average period. The two major problems with the well functioning of the services are those of the quality of the services themselves as well as internal and external axis connectivity. Furthermore, in regard of protected water sources, besides their location, it is also important to underline an additional aspect, such as the time required both to reach the source and to realize the supply. The water supply is a commitment that rural families perform every day and, given the long time necessary for this purpose, there is often a family member entirely occupied for this, most of the time a child or a young woman. The access to the various services takes place most often cycling or on foot. Only a very small proportion of the population owns a motorcycle and almost no one owns a car. The reference distances should therefore be understood as traveled on foot since is the most common way of moving. The idea is to build in each povados a basic multifunctional module that can be expanded in the future as needed. This basic module, coupled with a carrier carrying the various functions, could fill in the lack of services in the various villages. We have already said that one of the main problems in the area is the lack or low level of education of workers for shortage of funds. The network, ideally, could greatly reduce the number of jobseekers in the various areas and could help utilize the economic resources available to train more trained staff.

THE (self-built) MODULE has been designed starting from some guidelines inspired by the context that defines the shape and the function of the structure and also by the idea that a base module, previously planned, can be costumized and increased depending on the needs and personal wishes. According to the surveys on the African populatoin, in Mozambique, population has an outdoors lifestyle, mainly caracterized by the presence of big trees under that people gather around.

The big tree provide a natural protection from the incessant african sun; the basic module was designed to use the same principle: create a sun-protected environment where you can carry out the various activities of the day with a minimal cash expense. Therefore the main idea was to recreate a sort of tha rammed earth podium, covered by a two pitched roof, susteined by wood pillars. The podium is born to differentiate the

In the connection between the foundation and the pillar, it is necessary to use a steel joint to prevent the wood from penetrating water. Just like in the cover that was designed in sheet metal thinking about its durability over time. Wall mounting has been conceived as a lightweight structure in wood and bamboo strips, joined to the faรงade beams, with the possibility of being opened as needed, and with a folding opening to allow space ventilation.

structure from the surrounding territory with a material that is easier reacheable and that has an important value in the African culture: the earth. Using the autoctony rammed earth method, 3/4 m long wood boards, and simple joints, almost everithing could be made autonomously. The foundation of the structure consists of

cement, clay and aggregates blocks supporting the double-warp wood structure that will form the pavement. Everything is raised from the ground by 30 cm, so that the fresh air can circulate in the various areas. The dimension of the whole module is 8,45 m x 5,30 m with an interaxe between the columns of 3,15 m, that thanks to the vertical closure, can allow different composition, such as resi-
