Getting In Shape

Without The Gym

by Ava Gardner

very summer many of us aim to get a “HSB”. That is, a “Hot Summer Body”, but unfortunately, we sometimes fall short. It seems ideal to join a gym to work on the body we so desire, but going to the gym not only involves toil, sweat and tears, gym membership fees also affect pockets big time. Don’t sweat that though, here are some less expensive ways of achieving a leaner body this summer.

3. Water.

Water is the key to life. We always hear that we should drink eight glasses of water each day, but the benefits of drinking water to lose weight are sometimes overlooked. Water hydrates the body and helps it work efficiently. Drinking water boosts one’s metabolic rate, and helps to burn calories.

1. Keep Active.

Even though the summer holiday is meant to be free time, you can find ways to occupy yourself throughout the days. Yes, read a book, volunteer, work, take up a hobby or play a sport; all of these require a lot of primary energy, so you’ll be able to burn off the pounds. When you’re watching television, you can also exercise. Do some crunches on the couch, lift some dumbbells or do some lunges during commercials. You can use your free time to exercise.

4. Dance.

Dancing is a fantastic form of exercise. Not only does it raise the heart rate through movement, dancing also tones and tightens the major muscle groups of the body. So have fun and dance when you go out or try belly-dancing. With belly dancing, you’ll learn a new talent and reduce stress, which can cause weight gain, and burn calories, all at the same time.

2. Eat right.

In summer, we tend to have cravings for fast food. We can satisfy these cravings while still being weight conscious. For example, you can get vegetables into your burgers, salads with Jerk Chicken, and ice-cream with fruits. Eating a lot of vegetables, legumes and fruits, can help you lose weight. They will fill you up, without loading you up with fat and calories. Also, no late night eating. Eating at late hours has been proven to have a greater effect on the waistline. Having spicy food is also recommended, since it increases one’s metabolism causing you to again burn off pounds.

5. Sleep

Instead of “beauty sleep”, you’ll have “diet sleep”. Sleep has a large influence on whether one gains or loses fat. During your summer holiday, there should be no excuse why you don’t get adequate sleep, so shut those eyes and get some Z’s. teen spirit eZine

Fashionably Eco-Friendly

by Ava Gardner

here are many ways to be friendly to the environment. Teen Spirit, your favourite electronic magazine for teens, is one example of a product that’s eco-friendly. As a generally paperless office, Teen Spirit ensures that we save trees. A student at the Edna Manley College for the Visual and Performing Arts, however, has taken it one step further, deciding to produce eco-friendly clothing, through the conservation of natural fibers. On June 4th, an exhibition called Shift was held on the campus. It was one of many exhibitions held that evening. The Shift Ecofashion exhibit was created by final year student, Lauren Watkis, a 21 year old who has acquired a Bachelor Of Fine Arts (BFA) majoring in Visual Communication. The exhibit was done not only as part of her final assignment, but was also geared at encouraging eco-awareness and recycling. The eco-friendly showcase consisted of fashion pieces made from objects considered to be waste materials or otherwise trash. Pieces on display were actually more interesting than typical clothes produced under regular conditions. This reinforced the exhibition’s message, “More Art; Less Waste.” It promoted the notion that the production of more fashion was possible without increasing the use and waste of natural resources. Articles of clothing on display were solely dresses, all from waste material. The pieces were presented on mannequins which Lauren described individually. One piece was called The Shower Dress, which was strapless with a mint belt at the waist and made from shower curtain. Brownin was another strapless dress made from brown paper packaging. Garbage Trashion was again, a strapless dress, but was made from garbage bags. The ruching on the bottom of the Garbage Trashion dress was a delight, so Teen Spirit was happy to hear that all the dresses were surprisingly wearable. Pieces that were really breathtaking were, Call Girl and Queen Of Pop. Call Girl was a multi-strapped dress with a frilled bottom made from car lining and directory pages. Queen Of Pop consisted of a

dress and jacket both made from bubble wrap, however, it had a newspaper inset in its middle, which gave the translucent dress a bit of colour. When asked about why she chose Ecofashion out of an array of art assignment options, Lauren responded that it was something that was very conducive to what she had hoped to accomplish.

Fashionably Eco-Friendly It was indeed a very informative exhibition. Good energy filled the room as onlookers were entertained by pieces and conversed with one another. Those present were also able to interact and share their opinions with the designer. The showcase was just that excellent. Hopefully, in the future, we’ll hear and see more of Lauren Watkis, and more events like this will take place. Knowledge is key for advancing our country, and even though it may be impossible to change our shopping habits overnight, gradually firms can research and develop ways to be more eco-friendly in their production so that, we can begin to use clothing and other items that are more eco-friendly, in an effort to improve the condition of our environment.

Party Promoters and Underaged Drinking

H

by Kandice Moncrieffe

ow many times have you been to an alcohol inclusive party or a club and seen a baby walking around in diapers? If you’re an avid partygoer like me, then way too many times. The legal age for drinking in Jamaica is 18 years old, so why are so many young persons being exposed to a potentially harmful substance? Teen Spirit decided to do some research and asked event planners what they do to ensure that under aged drinking does not happen. One promoter said, “I would think that parents wouldn’t allow their young kids to go out to parties, because back in the day I wasn’t allowed to party till I was 18.” Another had this to say: “I don’t at all try to stop under aged drinking,” he said, while not providing a reason. These replies are worrying. It seems promoters don’t care about the patron’s health or the laws; they expect persons to be responsible and mature. However, they cannot abscond themselves from some level of responsibility to prevent under aged drinking. Afterall, they are citizens of this country and have a responsibility to respect the laws. When interviewed, the views of some under aged teenagers are certainly cause for concern. “It was very easy, I looked mature and they didn’t care. The promoter even liked me,” a 15 year

Movie X-Men: Class Review First PG-13 by Alana Gardner

-Men: First Class is an action-adventure film from director, Matthew Vaughn, Marvel Studios and 20th Century Fox Studios starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Rose Byrne, January Jones, Oliver Platt and Kevin Bacon. It unveils the epic beginning of the X-Men saga and the secret history behind the Cold War and our world at the brink of nuclear Armageddon. X-Men: First Class earns itself full five stars. Marvel has once again succeeded in converting one of their many legendary franchises into an extraordinary blockbuster film. I have to say go-

old said. One 16 year old said: “It was pretty easy; they didn’t check I.D or anything just collect money and put on the band.” A 17 year old actually told Teen Spirit about a personal experience where she went to a club and was asked for identification and because she didn’t have it, he turned her down. She said she made a call to the event planner and he immediately let her in. For another 17 year old with whom we spoke, getting into parties was never a real issue. “I never had problems getting alcohol and I’ve been partying from age 13. I never started drinking till roun’ 15 though. With regards to entering parties, I’ve only had problems getting into Fiction night club.” Many teenagers over the age of 18 are annoyed with seeing young teens at parties. Many believe that the party promoters should be charged a fine as much as $3 million, or be put on a break from being allowed to plan parties for a year or two, if they don’t enforce the age regulation for drinking. Nobody is saying persons shouldn’t have fun. Yes, there are parties for persons under the age of 18, but event planners should enforce the laws of the land and ensure that persons who are not at the legal age aren’t given any form of alcohol. What’s wrong with some soda or some orange juice or even red bull?

ing into this movie as a fan of the X-Men universe, I had high expectations and I am glad to tell you that they were fulfilled to the highest standard. McAvoy and Fassbender were absolutely fantastic at playing the younger versions of the legendary Professor X and Magneto. Not that Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen didn’t shine in their roles in the previous films, but I can confidently say that McAvoy and Fassbender really detached themselves from the shadows of these great actors, making this movie a definite must see. teen spirit eZine

Lebron Gets Blamed After Mavs’ NBA Championship Win by Najique Gayle

The Heats’ Big 3: Chris Bosh, LeBron James and Dwayne Wade.

T

he NBA final championship series between the Miami Heat and the Dallas Mavericks was considered to be a clash between two players, LeBron James and Dirk Nowitzki, both with something to prove. Dallas took the best of seven series 4-2 winning games two, four, five and six to deny the former Cleveland Cavaliers and current Miami Heat star, LeBron James, yet another taste of championship glory. James unexpectedly left his hometown team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, last year and took his talents to Miami with the anticipation of winning more games along with the coveted NBA championship. LeBron, whose nickname is King James, is still seen as a king without a crown or championship ring, for that matter. Subsequent to the Miami Heat’s loss, a great extent of the analysis was centered on LeBron James’ failures in the fourth quarter throughout the series. Whenever I listened to some Miami Heat fans or analysts comment on the games, I find it a bit unfair. It appears that there is a bias towards Dwyane Wade. Whenever the team loses, James becomes the scapegoat for blame while whenever they do well Wade is praised. Maybe it wasn’t the wisest of decisions for LeBron to leave Cleveland and join the South Florida team.

no clear cut looks at the basket. This allowed for his teammates to step up to the plate and pick up the slack. I must give Jason Terry a great deal of credit for the Mavs’ Win. He came off the bench to outplay arguably the two best players in the NBA, James and Wade. As a result of this team play, the Dallas Mavericks were crowned NBA champions for the first time in the franchise’s history, winning Game six 105-95 in Miami on June 12th. Veteran NBA star Jason Kidd won his title at the age of 38, along with Terry and Nowitzki, who scored 21 points and was named Finals MVP. Many believe this was a well-deserved win. Nowitzki and Kidd have spent 13 and 17 years respectively in the NBA to get where they are today and win a championship. For Mavericks’ dynamic duo, Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry, this victory was definitely the sweetest. With over 20 years of combined playing time for Dallas, these two were ready for their chance at glory.

German superstar Dirk Nowitzki, is clearly a problem for teams. He is second in the playoffs in scoring, averaging 28.4 points per game. Whenever there is a shot on, you just expect to hear that ‘swish’ sound from the basket. The Heat recognized Nowitzki as a threat and because of this he was double teamed and given

Five Ways to Get

The Perfect Summer Job

by Francine Derby

E

very year, teens are faced with the task of deciding what to do with all their free time in the long summer months. A job is an excellent option because it will occupy a few hours of your day, while allowing you to earn some extra cash. Summer jobs have a reputation of being elusive and difficult to come by, but Teen Spirit has a few tips to make your job search easier and more profitable.

Start early

If you don’t already have a job this year, it is more than likely too late to start looking for one at this point. But, go ahead and try, you might just get lucky. It’s best to start your search in March or April when employers are already thinking about upcoming staffing issues. Applying early ensures that you will be ahead of the competition. Consider this when looking for a job next year.

Get Help

Quite often, teens need the help of an older person to secure a summer job. Ask your parents, teachers, parents’ friends, parents’ coworkers or any other older person who may be in a position to assist you in your search. Older persons who are already in the world of work will know of any vacancies and can also provide a great recommendation for you to their employers.

The Resume

At this age, most teens don’t have many qualifications or work experiences to speak of, so they shy away from writing a resume. This should not be the case. Every potential employer

www.ezineslimited.com

will wish to see a resume. Include any special skills you have computer skills, interpersonal skills or communication skills - as these are important assets that may impress employers and get you a job. Include any special awards that you have won, classes that you have attended and past experiences.

Applications and Interviews

Ensure that your application letter is properly formatted and without errors. (Refer to issue on April 12). If you are called for an interview, your attire should be fit for the workplace - always dress professionally, not casually. Carry documents such as your resume, transcripts and letters of recommendation along with you. Be friendly but not overbearing, and confident without being vain. Making a good first impression on your employers is the most important thing to consider in the acquisition of a job.

Work for Free

That’s right, offer to work without pay. The number one benefit of this is, of course, experience. If a company accepts your offer and you’re excelling in the workplace, you may be offered a stipend and you’ll stand a good chance of being employed at the same institution next year. After you have started to work, complete every task to the best of your ability and continue to be courteous to your employers and coworkers. Impressing employers will work to your benefit as they will be able to write great recommendations for you or help you with job searches in the future. teen spirit eZine
