Advanced Farm Technologies Advanced Farm Technology was founded in 1991 and has been a JEA member since then. It produces “the world’s sweetest papaya” under the Martha’s Best label. The strawberry papayas are verified NON-GMO, and the company prides itself on offering the only tree-ripened papayas available in North America and the UK that is reaped, packed, and air shipped within 24 hours. The company continues to expand, adding 50 permanent and 10 temporary workers over the past three years. The company also has a vibrant outreach programme, supporting basic schools in the communities surrounding its facilities in Trelawny. ‘UNBOXING’ JAMAICA’S EXPORT POTENTIAL The Jamaica Exporters’ Association (JEA) began in 1966 under the aegis of the Jamaica Industrial Development Corporation (JIDC). The Association’s role was to provide its members with a forum to exchange export ideas, disseminate market and trade-related information, conduct market investigations for members, and advocate on behalf of the export sector. Although the motto has changed from ‘Helping Each Other in International Trade’ to ‘Committed to National Development through Exports,’ the Association’s roles remain the same. This year, in recognition of its 50th anniversary of service to the exporting community, the Association will recognise fifty companies, currently in business, that have made significant contributions to Jamaica’s export performance. This year’s honourees are a diverse group, featuring manufacturers large and small, ‘seasoned’ and new, in food processing, mining and energy; as well as companies that offer various export-related services such as shipping and logistics, standards and quality analysis, and financing. The companies also represent different geographic locations, which augurs well for the continued expansion of the industry locally. The export markets are also diverse. The traditional locales of the USA, the UK, Canada and the Caribbean region, where large pockets of the Jamaican Diaspora reside and hunger for a taste of home, make up the bulk; however, new markets have emerged in other parts of Europe, Latin America, and parts of Asia as more and more people around the world catch on the power of Brand Jamaica. In addition to their successes both here and abroad, the awardees also demonstrate a deep commitment to corporate social responsibility, each giving back to the through acts of philanthropy or dedicated foundations, particularly in the areas of education and youth development. The Jamaica Exporters’ Association is an important national association working towards realising Jamaica’s success, economic growth and prosperity and we take that responsibility seriously. The Fantastic 50 Exporters Award ceremony to be held on July 2, 2016 will honor 50 companies nominated for their significant contribution in manufacturing, services and support to exporters and to Jamaica’s growth. Achieving the national export goal will require an aggressive approach to meet ambitious targets. Meeting these goals will require a greater understanding of global trends with regards to global standards for each industry. It will require that we hone in on our competitive nature and that the foundation for doing business is linked to formalising the economy and simplifying processes of doing business. We recognise the difficulties the exporting fraternity face and it is the task of government, through public and private partnerships, to pull these plugs. We will see partnerships becoming the continuity between political party changes because the private sector will take more responsibility and government will provide the infrastructure and policy.
Ag Chem Plant Limited Ag Chem Plant Limited (ACP) is a Jamaican company incorporated in September 2014 to take over the operations of the Agricultural Chemicals Plant division of J. Wray and Nephew Limited. The new company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Caribbean Chemicals and Agencies Limited, incorporated in Trinidad and Tobago. The operations have been up and running since 1978, primarily focused on the formulation of herbicides, insecticides and veterinary products for the agriculture sector. ACP also produces household insecticides such as the VAPE line of mosquito repellents. The company has been exporting to the Caribbean region for the last 17 years. It employs 65 people, and over the years, has won several awards for operational efficiency and product innovation. Socially conscious, ACP has been a longstanding partner with the Jamaica 4 H Club and proudly supports the Cromarty Lands Basic School neighbouring its plant facility in Spanish Town.

B&D Trawling Limited is a family-owned business whose principal activities are the fishing, purchasing and processing of seafood for export. The company began operations 31 years ago and has been a member of the JEA since its inception.
The 49-year-old company has been a JEA member for 24 years. AML currently employs 110 people and produces more than 20 innovative and traditional products under the Walkerswood label and 18 for Busha Browne. The Walkerswood farm and factory are located in the village of the same name in rural St Ann, while Busha Browne’s farms are located in different areas across the country, with factory operations in Kingston. In addition to the local market, products are exported to Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and other CARICOM countries, as well as the USA, UK, Canada and Latin America.
B&D’s seafood of choice are conch and lobster, which are processed and packaged for export to large seafood distributors based in France, USA and China. The company also contracts processes, markets and exports conch and lobster for other licensed fishers. Thirty-one years after spearheading the fishing of queen conch in Jamaica, the company is again pioneering another significant fishery locally: the sea cucumber, which is actually not a marine vegetable but a tube-shaped echinoderm found on the ocean floor. B&D has been researching and developing this product for 15 years and has been successfully harvesting and processing it for export to China, Malaysia and Korea since 2014.

The 34-year-old company has taken a sweet bite into the local food processing sector with its line of baked snacks, including donuts, raisin and cheese breads, buns, cinnamon rolls, cupcakes, bread pudding and more. The Honey Bun line is the most popular of its products, but the company also manufactures Buccaneer Jamaica rum cakes and Island Bites, which includes cookies and brownies.
Industrial Chemicals Company, established in 1969 by late businessman Alexander Barclay Ewart, is the only manufacturer of salt and associated products in Jamaica. The company started out manufacturing sulphuric acid, an important material used in the bauxite mining and processing operations in Jamaica and the Caribbean. It is still the only large-scale provider of sulphuric acid in Jamaica.

Jamaican Teas Limited Jamaican Teas Limited was initially operated as Tetley Tea Company (Ja) Limited from 1967 until 1995, when it was acquired by the father-and-son team of Adeeb and John Mahfood. They launched the Caribbean Dreams herbal teas brand and expanded its offerings. Today, it is the largest producer of teas in the Caribbean, with more than 40 flavours. The Pickapeppa Company was established in 1945, but its trademark Pickapeppa Sauce had its beginnings in the kitchen of Norman Nash, who started the process as a hobby in 1921. Lacking the necessary investment to perfect it, Nash sold the rights and business to Joseph Lyn Kee Chow 24 years later.
Petrojam is Jamaica’s only petroleum refinery, jointly owned by PDVCaribe, a subsidiary of Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) and the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ). The company supplies domestic, transportation and industrial petroleum products, including diesel oil, heavy fuel oil, kerosene, jet fuel, liquid petroleum gas (LPG), asphalt and gasoline.
The original Pickapeppa sauce, along with Hot Pepper Sauce, Hot Mango Sauce, Spicy Mango Sauce and Gingery Mango Sauce, are exported to several markets around the world, including the USA, Canada, the UK and the Cayman Islands, as well as leading gourmet stores in Sweden, Norway Germany, France, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
Petrojam traces its roots to March 1964. Canadian oil company ESSO built and operated the refinery for 18 years before selling it to the government of Jamaica. Twenty-two years later, the government sold 49 per cent of its shares to PDVCaribe. Petrojam also operates a laboratory which provides quality control and certification services for petroleum products manufactured and imported by the refinery. Laboratory services are also provided to local businesses and the scientific community.
The company employs 44 staff members and provides income for many farmers in the Shooters Hill area. It also offers tours to tourists, schools and residents. The Pickapeppa Company gives back by sponsoring several schools and service clubs, and providing financial support to community projects.
