Dear Readers

In this issue

Welcome to the first issue of the new school year and a big ’Hello’ to all our new readers. You will (hopefully!) be seeing us just before each school holiday full of ideas of places to go and things to see and do.

I have to make my annual apology for the frightful amount of spookily creepy made up words that always appear this time of year - I wonder what could be the cause! You may be pleased to know (or you may not) we’ve found lots of Hallowe’en events - they seem to almost be back in full force.

Not to worry, there are many less gruesome events to enjoy as well, and you’ll notice ones relating to a certain ‘man in red’ beginning to creep in.

Some pantos start in November and we’ve mentioned all the others as well - we’ll have more details in the next issue.

Unfortunately things are still a bit up in the air which means changes could occur at short notice, with cancellations and additions. Most things still need to be booked in advance and where spaces are limited it is best to book as early as possible but don’t go anywhere without checking it is still going to happen.

Have fun and we will see you again at the end of November.

Making the most of pumpkins The tradition of Hallowe’en dates back to 2,000 years ago when the Celts used to celebrate the festival of Samhain.

Costumes would be worn, bonfires lit and they used to carve faces into pumpkins and vegetables to ward off evil spirits. Although the original name may have died off the traditional activities haven’t. Hallowe’en is bigger than ever and carving a pumpkin is just one of the ways to have some frightfully good fun with it.

Whether you have gone out to pick your own or are just selecting from a shop it’s important to know what you are looking for when choosing your spooky squash plant.

Picking the right jack o’ lantern for the 31 October is important to ensure it will withstand carving. An old crumbling, greying one won’t be any good for carving or cooking.

Here are some important checking tips to get the most pumpkin for your money.

Inspect for Damage and soft spots Before buying, make sure you inspect the pumpkin for nicks, scratches and soft spots. The more damaged the skin is the weaker the pumpkin will be so it may not withstand carving - or taste good. Keep searching for a freshlooking pumpkin with smooth skin.

Go for an even shape A wonky pumpkin may look interesting, but when it comes to carving, it will be less symmetrical and areas will vary in thickness making it difficult to slice.

The more rounded and even shaped the pumpkin is, the easier it will be to create a good design on it.

How can we avoid this? The obvious answer is eat it. Roasted seeds are very tasty and there are really good recipes around (for example pumpkin soup, pie, bread, brownies or cookies).

But there are many other ways of using the fruit and the shell when Hallowe’en is over. Here are some ideas: Bright Bird Feeder Once Hallowe’en is over, why not make your pumpkin into a bird feeder. Add holes to it for string, and to hold twigs for perches, put bird seed in the bottom and hang it in the garden. You can put pumpkin seeds in for birds to eat as well.

Look for a solid stem Look for a stem that’s attached solidly when you buy – it means it is still fresh and isn’t old or withered and weak. A green stem is a sign that a pumpkin has just been picked, which is a good indicator of freshness.

Aim for a smaller pumpkin if baking If baking, a small to medium pumpkin known as a ‘golden nugget’ is best for making roasted pumpkin soups. The smaller squash plant is sweet and finely textured with a deep orange skin on the outside and light golden flesh on the inside.

Budding artists can use the firm part of the pumpkin to make stamps. They can dip them in paint and create their own masterpieces by stamping them onto paper to make patterns.

Brighten up the garden Leftover pumpkins make great planters. Cut a drainage hole in the bottom and place plants or flowers inside before surrounding them with soil. You could line it with newspaper.

Back to Earth Cut your used pumpkin up in pieces and leave it out for wildlife to eat. Don’t do this if there are hedgehogs around as eating pumpkin can upset their stomachs and even kill them.

When they are finished put what is left on the compost heap to make compost out of it to help the garden thrive. You can also try planting the seeds to see if you can grow your own pumpkin for next year.

The Artist’s Apprentice Trail Take part in this arty trail at Hestercombe Gardens where young artists will colour in a masterpiece of their own as they follow in the footsteps of the great Coplestone Warre Bampfylde, designer of Hestercombe’s landscape gardens.

When their masterpiece is complete, they will graduate as a Master Artist and have a certificate to prove it. Later in the year all of the drawings will be used to recreate one huge version of Coplestone’s painting and display it at Hestercombe. There will be a new trail every school holiday. When you go take your Artist’s Apprentice Trail booklet to the Ticket Office to receive a stamp - Collect all the stamps to win a special prize.

Palace 800 - The Story of a Palace and a Home Go on a journey through the 800 years of history introducing you to the people and events that have shaped this special place. Discover how the Bishop’s Palace’s residents have connected the building to major events throughout history, from Magna Carta to the Second World War, and see how the site has evolved over its 800 years.

Alice Kettle: Thread Bearing Witness Exhibition of the works of the highly-regarded textile artist whose large-scale narrative embroideries are inspired by contemporary issues and ideas. The works on display in Somerset Rural Life Museum will explore the theme of migration, including cultural heritage, journeys and displacement.

Taunton Carnival Day Events take place in the pedestrianised High Street leading south from the Market House in the town centre. Family learning festival play, imagine, learn is the theme of this year’s Family Learning Festival which runs from 16 to 31 October. The festival, run by the Campaign for Learning, aims to promote a love of learning for life.

Organisers run activities for different generations to learn together. The Festival is for all the family, children and their parents, carers, grandparents, uncles, aunts and friends take part. It is a perfect opportunity to share resources, ideas and skills and promote learning in fun and creative ways.

New learning environment for Taunton school Taunton based Minerva Primary School and Owlets Nursery started the term in a new nursery building and expanded and refurbished classrooms. The nursery capacity has doubled and they now have a huge outdoor area with two large shelters allowing outside play in all weathers.

The pupils have been busy utilising the new space and there are plans for them to add their own artistic touch to the new entrance lobby which has been decorated by a local artist.

A spokesperson said “The new spaces are light and bright and offer fantastic learning and playing environments. We cannot wait to see the pupil’s flourish and enjoy their improved settings.”

They are looking forward to offering support for parent and carers by hosting coffee mornings and settling in sessions and opening a library in the reception area.

Artistic Children contribute to new development Artistic school children from Northgate Primary School have created designs for a 20-metre section of hoarding around the new Northgate Yard and Brewery Field development site.

26 designs from talented pupils were selected in a competition run by Sedgemoor District Council and site contractors Willmott Dixon to decorate the section directly opposite the school. The children were asked to create hoarding designs showing the new Northgate Yard development and what they are most looking forward to when it opens.

The winning and runner up designs from each class are now on the hoardings where they will remain throughout the construction process which is due to be completed by October of next year.

Each class winner also received a family cinema voucher from Scotts Cinema for use in its current location before it moves to its 7-screen cinema in the new development.

The winners are: Xintong Y, age 5; Faith R, age 6; Sarah P, age 7; Pedro AS, age 8; Jake P, age 9; Latisha H, age 9 and Lily W, age 11.

Northgate Yard will feature a 7-screen cinema, 8-lane bowling alley and multiple restaurants. The adjacent green space, Brewery Field, will be enhanced to include an outdoor children’s play area and parkland with a pond and landscaped planting.

Hallowe’en Superstitions Hallowe’en is an ancient Celtic festival held on 31 October. Hundreds of years ago it was called the Festival of the Dead when people believed spirits of the dead and ghosts came alive to frighten them and witches, hobgoblins, warlocks and other evil spirits walked abroad devoting themselves to wicked revels. When the Christian festival of All Saints, or All Hallows, started on 1 November the original festival on 31 October remained becoming All Hallow’s Eve, or Hallowe’en.

Over the centuries there have been many superstitions connected to Hallowe’en. We have gathered together some unusual ones, just for your enjoyment, of course... or is it? If you want to be really safe you might want to take heed!!

At Hallowe’en A person born on Hallowe’en can see and talk to spirits.

People believed the Devil was a nut gatherer.

At Hallowe’en nuts were used as magic.

Walk around your home three times backwards and counterclockwise before sunset on Hallowe’en, or ring a bell, to ward off evil spirits.

If you see a spider on Hallowe’en it could be the spirit of a dead loved one who is watching you.

A burning candle inside a jack-o-lantern on Hallowe’en keeps evil spirits and demons at bay.

If you go to a crossroads at Hallowe’en and listen to the wind you will learn all the most important things that will befall you in the next twelve months.

Light a new orange coloured candle at midnight on Hallowe’en and let it burn until sunrise and you will be the recipient of good luck.

Never slam a door. You might hurt a ghost who will haunt you for the rest of your life.

In the meantime she meets Hazel. She is very friendly, but there’s something a bit odd about her. She turns up without any warning and goes away so quickly it’s as if she just disappears. Another slightly odd character is Alice, the local vicar. Hazel says she is a witch so should Aveline to take any notice of her warnings to be wary of Hazel? As their friendship develops Aveline finds herself doing whatever Hazel tells her, even when she leaves Harold in a dreamlike state. Aveline is shocked when she discovers who Hazel really is and what she wants of her. Is she strong enough to resist Hazel’s powers? This is an entertaining, mystical story full of intrigue with heart stopping moments that really draw the reader in. Full length novel, first in a new series.

The police are sure she is guilty and aren’t looking for any one else, so it is up to the family to track down the real thief to get gran released, not an easy task. Could a suspicious family they keep bumping in to be the culprits? A lot of detective work is needed and help comes from an unexpected source. There are plenty of laughs and surprises in this highly enjoyable adventure story, latest in the ‘Anisha Accidental Detective’ series.

This gives a more personal view making the reader feel more involved. It is all told in an easy to read, flowing style making it a really absorbing read. It’s the time of year arachnophobes look forward to ....spider season!

But there are many reasons these little visitors should be made welcome

S

piders reach maturity in the autumn and like to settle in nice cosy homes to meet other spiders and make more spiders.

For some of us — me included — they make a fascinating study, just look at the wonderfully intricate webs for a start, but others wouldn’t agree.

Native spiders are comparatively tiny and only

Spiders Good 4 Killing Bad 6 a dozen or so of the 670 species have jaws powerful enough to break human skin, but they are not aggressive and will only attempt to bite as a last resort. Even then the bites produce little or no reaction.

Despite the fact no spider in this country can kill us many people cower in fear at the sight of them, including members of my family! This can give people the urge to kill them, but unlike some insects, far from harming us they help us.

As a deterrent to spidercide I’d like to point out the essential role they play within our ecosystem.

Assets Spiders eat flies, fleas, mosquitos and other pests.

Now flies are not good — they really are a nuisance and

spread germs, while we know the nasty effects fleas and mosquitos have on us and other pests destroy edible plants in the garden.

Therefore spiders help prevent the spread of disease and hinder the number of pests invading our homes and gardens.

It’s not just at home, they are helpful to farmers in keeping crops pest free and have been known to reduce insect numbers making them a much welcome alternative to environment harming pesticides.

Pesticide use is one of the main reasons our bee and hedgehog populations are declining, so letting our natural pest control experts breed helps these and other creatures survive.

Spiders also provide food for numerous other

organisms; their venom is being investigated as a source of natural insecticides and their silk can be used in medicine, for example as the scaffolding for artificial joints.

If you really can’t bear to share your home with a spider, please don’t kill it. The best way to remove it is to put a tumbler over it, slide a piece of card between the surface and the tumbler to trap it inside and release it some distance from the house.

There are also harmless commercial spider removers on the market.

Sealing any cracks or crevices around doors and windows can reduce the number of eight legged unwanted guests gaining access.

Remember, they are our allies, not our enemy!

Helping wildlife in winter Winter can be a hard time for wildlife. Weakened shelter, dwindling food supplies and frozen ponds are things many creatures face when temperatures plummet.

A lack of food and shelter can leave animals and insects cold and hungry throughout winter, unless action is taken to prepare for the cold weather.

Here are some tips to make sure your garden is wildlife friendly this winter.

Let your garden go wild Don’t cut your bushes, trees or plants and leave fallen leaves and twigs on the garden floor. An overgrown patch in your garden can provide much needed shelter and food for animals and insects.

You could also collect fallen leaves and branches or build a shelter for small animals and insects.

Feed your visitors Food supplies can become scarce in cold weather. You can help by setting up a bird feeder filled with nuts, seeds and berries to make sure your feathered friends don’t go hungry. Leaving out pots of food and water will help keep other visitors, such as hedgehogs, fed and hydrated as well. Fill the pots with hedgehog food, leftover meat or tinned dog or cat food.

Maintain your pond If your garden pond freezes over in winter gasses can build up and harm frogs and fish living there. Allow these gasses to escape by melting a hole in a section of the pond using a hot saucepan. Don’t smash the ice or pour boiling water on it as this could harm wildlife as well.

You may be able to avoid a frozen pond

by putting a tennis ball in it. The ball’s movement can prevent ice from forming.

Grow winter flowering plants Pollen and nectar are essential foods for a range of insects including bees and butterflies. However these plants are often in short supply during the colder months.

You can give insects the chance of living through winter by planting some winter flowering nectar and pollen rich plants in your garden such as primrose, aconite, oregon, grape, willow and evergreen clematis.

Aren’t we dogs wonderful? I don’t know what you would do without us, and these Guide Dogs really prove it. I think I would make a really good Guide Dog, after all I ‘guide’ my sheep around all the time — how much easier must it be to just have one human to organise? AND we get to attach them to us so they can’t even wander off. I know all the best places to go. There’s nothing better than running across a field and jumping over hedges. I could really show them a good time! I mentioned this to Pud and she said something about ‘patience’ and couldn’t stop laughing, can’t think what was so amusing. This October Guide Dogs for the Blind are celebrating 90 years since the first four dogs changed those first four lives and they would like your help by supporting their 90 appeal.

In October 1931, Flash, Folly, Meta and Judy were sent to live with and guide veterans of the First World War who had lost their sight (pictured below). It all started with two amazing British pioneers, Muriel Crooke and Rosamund Bond.

These remarkable women organised the training of the first four British guide dogs, German Shepherds, from a humble lock up garage in Wallasey, Merseyside.

Three years later Guide Dogs for the Blind Association was formed and since then fundraisers have helped transform thousands of lives.

It started getting really noticed in the 1950s when they began to recruit puppy walkers to help simplify the selection. In the 1960s they began their own breeding programme to improve the quality of the pups.

They also became

a household name when Honey, a Guide Dog puppy in training joined Blue Peter, the first of many. Pups have also become short term members of the This Morning team.

From a small beginning it has slowly expanded and now has eight regional centres and is the world’s largest breeder and trainer of working dogs. Blind Children UK integrated with them in 2017, becoming one charity.
