Summer is a great time to get lost in a good book, they are so portable!

They help you while away the hours lazing in the sun — or sheltering from the rain — and can be so relaxing. Here are some I’ve been lost in, some funny, others more hair raising, but all good fun.

George the wombat had lots of friends and one day they asked him out to play. His parents said it was OK, but warned him to be careful as there were animals out there that would want to eat him. George practised a few moves he thought would put an enemy off and went to play in the dark woods. They played hide and seek and George shut his eyes when it was his turn to seek, only to open them and see Wilma the Fox standing in front of him. She demanded he show her where he lived so she could eat his family. But The Wizards’ George had other ideas and chose one of his moves — he ran. He couldn’t outrun her Banquet Vivian French for ever so thought of a cunning plan using (Walker, £6.99) his strongest part. You will have to read this laugh out loud story with even funnier Out looking for a job, pictures to find out what that is.

Pippin finds Wizard

The Invention - Julia Hubery / James Munro (Graffeg, £7.99)

Abacus in need of an assistant to help win a race to a magical wizards’ banquet and a new life of luxury.

To say Abacus is vague and forgetful is an understatement, but Pippin has the help of Latterly, a talking cooking pot, and finds a magical invitation which shows him the way. They have to be very careful when they arrive — only the 100th wizard to enter will win and the 99th will be turned into a tortoise. There are many obstacles to overcome, some created by the deceitful wizard Bolways and his elf assistant Kitty, who secretly want to use them to get to the banquet and plan to trick Abacus out of the prize. Will Pippin discover the deceit in time? Will Kitty see the error of her ways? This is a very funny, warm hearted story full of magic and adventure. It has really entertaining characters, especially Latterly and Mavis the bat.

Fili and her dad live in a flat in a big building which they look after.

There are lots of homes in the building full of people, but most of them don’t answer when she talks to them, which makes her sad, wondering if they might need looking after as well. So she starts to make something she calls an invention.

People begin talking to her to ask how it works and what it does, and her honest answer is she doesn’t know. It grows and grows until one day Fili invites everyone to an invention party. They are all eager to see what it is, but it needs them all to help it work. They all talk to each other as they pull together to get it working, could that be Fili’s plan all along? A simple, touching story with the illustrations adding details.

Latest in the ‘Diamond Brothers Detectives For Hire’ series sees them down to their last cornflake, not having had a case for months. This isn’t surprising as Tim must be the worst detective there is, rarely aware of what is going on around him. Luckily his young brother, Nick, is the opposite. When a woman offers them a lot of money to find her kidnapped father, they jump at the chance, even though something doesn’t quite add up. They wonder if they have made the right decision when faced with leather clad, gun toting motor cyclists.

Reluctantly accepting an offer by MI6 to help stop an evil plot for world dominance seems to be their only option. This involves more dangerous escapades and nothing is as it seems, even people, which makes things very difficult. Will Nick be able to solve the case and keep them both alive, despite his brother’s ‘help’? This is an hilarious story full of dare devil escapades, plot twists and laugh out loud moments. It will keep you gripped throughout.

Keep Dancing, Lizzie Chu Maisie Chan (Piccadilly, £6.99) Lizzie lives with her granddad, Wai Gong, who has been very low since the death of his wife, Kam. His sometimes strange behaviour worries Lizzie who has to take on more and more responsibility.

One thing that cheers him up is watching Strictly on television, he and Kam had been keen ballroom dancers. When Lizzie gets tickets to tea dance at the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool Kam has left her she is sure the trip will bring Wai Gong back to his old self. Getting there from Glasgow isn’t going to be easy, not least of all convincing Wai Gong he deserves to go, but with the help of good friends a plan is hatched. You could say things don’t go quite as planned — with car break downs, dangerous looking bikers, missing money and a monumental error, everything is against them...... or is it? This lovely story about friendship, caring for others and overcoming obstacles to achieve your dreams really pulls at your heart strings. You live all the highs and lows with the characters, it can even have you shouting advice at them — they won’t listen!

Rex: Dinosaur in Disguise Elys Dolan (Walker, £6.99)

Having been frozen in ice for millions of years, Rex is totally bewildered by the world he wakes up in. He doesn’t recognise anything he sees, or see anything he remembers, until a poster of dinosaurs points him on the direction of a Natural History Museum exhibition. Sadly all he finds there are dinosaur skeletons. Luckily the frightened dinosaur is spotted by Bigfoot who has spent years successfully living among humans disguised as one, as have Dodo and Nessy, afraid what would happen to them if they were found out.

Bigfoot takes Rex home and teaches him how to look, talk and behave as a human. He gets Rex a job, but there is a lot to learn and poor old Rex keeps making mistakes and getting fired. Things get worse when Sandra, a young neighbour who loves solving mysteries, sees through Rex’s disguise. Far from a disaster, she and her friend, Anish, are thrilled to meet a dinosaur and Yeti and offer to help. They find Rex a job he is good at, but not everyone is willing to give him a chance, preferring to believe daft videos they have seen online. Things turn very nasty for Rex and Bigfoot, is help at hand? See what happens in this very funny story with adorable characters and plenty of food for thought, first in a new series. Full of gorgeous pictures it is a great bridge from picture book to novel, but enjoyable for all abilities. I love it!

Buzz and new friend, Mari, are surprised to find a missing weather woman tied to a tree in the forest. A bigger shock comes from the strange things that happen when they try to free her and she tells them she is Sunna the Norse goddess of the sun possessing the weather woman’s body. You might think having a Professor of Mythology as a father would make Buzz knowledgeable on the subject, but it has actually put him off.

Mari on the other hand has a keen interest. Sunna tells them the god Loki has unlocked the curse that imprisoned him and returned to take his revenge. They must collect the Runes of Valhalla before Loki does and awaken the other day guardians to stop him. Buzz doesn’t want anything to do with it until he wakes the next day and finds it is a repeat — the Call Me Lion- Camilla Chester (Firefly, £7.99) Unmorrow Curse means time can’t move Leo has a secret he can’t hide. His selective mutism leaves him unable to talk to anyone except his on. Without a choice the friends set off immediate family. Dear Readers

In this issue

Summer’s here, (someone tell the weather!) and with it comes lots of festivals, fairs, fetes and outdoor shows.

Thankfully, there are plenty of indoor shows and events as well, our Roundabout, holiday and theatre pages are bursting at the seams.

It is nice to see some of them are free. Talking of money, giving children an appreciation of the value of money and how to save it is a good idea and we have some advice on how to do that.

We take a look at the work of ADD International, a local charity who help disability organisations across the world, and some people that have been helped.

We also introduce the new Children’s Laureate and see how he plans to spend his time in office.

We’d like to wish good luck to everyone who is going up to ‘big school’ next term, not that you will need it. And thank all the schools who give out our magazine, enjoy your break!

100% Homegrown Appeal In Uganda, a group of disabled people have set up their own kitchen gardens with support from Frome based charity ADD International. This means that they can grow their own food, like tomatoes, aubergine, greens and onions, in ways that are easy for them to manage. Here we look at just three of their stories.

Fazira

During lockdown, Lydia was unable to access food and ran out of money. She set up a small garden using sacks and tins that she could access easily from her wheelchair.

“Some people think they can’t grow because they are renting. But during covid I grew onions in tins. I have some sacks for a garden. I can reach them easily and where I need help I ask. I grow for eating. I find it interesting and it saves money to grow your own.”

She explains that gardening is also very good for your mental health.

Fazira set up her garden by planting seeds in sacks and tins just outside of her home, which she can easily reach to water and harvest. She is visually impaired and says setting up her garden in this way makes it accessible to her. Now, she wants to support young disabled people to set up their own kitchen gardens, and be independent.

“I am where I am because I was supported by other people with disabilities. They have been there for me.

In the same spirit I also want to share and support.

Young people need to be supported to start a small kitchen garden.”

Homegrown Leaders Because people like Fazira and Justine know what is it like to be disabled, and to live in Uganda, they, along with other disability rights activists (people who are campaigning for disabled people to have equal rights) are designing and leading the project. ADD International is supporting them by raising money and helping to run the project.

“Covid was tough. I ran out of money. Then food ran out. So I concentrated on my garden. I was stressed and I needed to see green. That’s when I planted so many peas. For two reasons, one, I wanted to see green, and I wanted to eat peas. My favourite meal is matooke (a kind of banana that is steamed and mashed ) and peas and I like my food with a lot of onions so I grow onions and tomatoes too. In that time we were also advised to eat a lot of fruit and vegetables to stay healthy so my garden helped me do that.”

Justine (left) lost her job because of being disabled, which is an example of discrimination. She started a kitchen garden to grow vegetables and earn money.

In Uganda school isn’t free. She said: “Farming has enabled me to provide for my children, for their school fees, and also for my own needs.”

Join in the summer holiday challenge and start your own tin-garden. Reuse an old tin, fill it with soil and plant your seeds. ADD International would love you to share what you’ve grown with them, or ask an adult to do this on your behalf.

‘Wed in the Westcountry’ Wedding Dress exhibition in the house at Forde Abbey from 1940’s through to the present day. The exhibition explores how gown styles and materials have changed over the decades, including those borrowed and adapted in wartime.

Poetic Laureate Joseph Coelho, the award winning performance poet, playwright and children’s author, has been crowned the twelfth Children’s Laureate. He was appointed with a bespoke silver medal by Cressida Cowell MBE, the outgoing Laureate, at a ceremony in the Unicorn Theatre in London on 4 July.

The Children’s Laureate is awarded biannually to a renowned writer or illustrator in recognition of exceptional talent. Managed by Booktrust and sponsored by Waterstones the role celebrates creativity and storytelling, promotes the vital importance of reading and children’s literature and champions the right of every child to enjoy a lifetime enriched with books and stories. Each Laureate brings their own passion and creativity with areas they want to focus on.

At the ceremony, Joseph said he wants to celebrate the power of poetry, showcase new authors and illustrators to diversify bookshelves and inspire bookmakers of the future and champion public libraries and the role they play in communities. He also performed a new poem written to mark the occasion called ‘The Power of a Poem’.

Major Projects To deliver his ambitions, Joseph’s Laureateship will focus on three major projects: Bookmaker Like You will showcase new talent within the industry and spotlight their work, so that children are introduced to a range of creatves that reflect everyone in our diverse society and ensure every child can see themselves as a bookmaker.

Library Marathon Joseph wants to champion local libraries, highlighting the vital role they play and inspiring a love of reading in young people. He aims to join a library in every local authority in the UK and encourage more people to register with their local library.

Life and Influences Joseph grew up in a Tower Block in Roehampton in London in the 1980s with his mother and sister. He didn’t think of being a writer as a child, it didn’t occur to him he could be - writers were special people who existed in far off places.

He has memories of copying the pictures from a copy of Fungus The Bogey Man by Raymond Briggs and writing his own story under them. His first memory of writing a poem was in year eight in secondary school when he entered a poetry competition. He didn’t win, but he kept writing poems about how he was feeling and what was going on in his life.

Sometimes he would share them in drama class. In one class he was inspired by a visit from the poet Jean Binta Breeze reading her poems, the first time he realised being a poet could be a paid job.

Joseph studied archaeology at university

and had a variety of jobs after, whilst still writing for pleasure. He joined a performance poetry course at Battersea Arts Centre writing poems and sharing them on stage. People enjoyed them and asked him to share his poems in schools.

After some years of running creative writing workshops in schools, writing plays for theatres and performing his poems wherever he could, he began to dream of being a published writer.

A few of his poems had been included in anthologies when he met a publisher at the London Book Fair who agreed to publish his poems. His first collection: ‘Werewolf Club Rules’ was published in 2014 and he has been writing and performing ever since. He writes for children of all ages from the Luna Loves series of picture books to middle grade Fairytales Gone Bad series and Young Adult book The Boy Lost in the Maze as well as non-fiction titles and, of course, his poetry.

As Laureate, Joseph hopes to “connect with my younger self - a self unable to imagine a future writing and publishing books. Through this work, through the young people and families I am lucky enough to interact with, I’m trying to reach down through time and tell little Joe “ You can write, you can be a writer, your voice is valid, your words are waiting to be heard.” Because I know that when the youth of today hear that message, he’ll hear it too.”

Teaching children about money With the cost of living increasing, now is a better time than ever to help chidren gain an understanding of the value of money and teach them the importance of saving effectively. With that in mind, financial experts from money.co.uk have compiled a list of their top 10 tips for teaching your children about money.

Start with the basics of money and finance

Try simple games with younger children

How you introduce money to your children will partly depend on their age.

A good place to start is getting children comfortable handling cash and coins.

Explain to them how money is used to buy things and that it must be earned before it can be spent.

Creating easy monetary games such as counting pennies can help your child understand the value of different denominations of money. Try using a pile of 1p coins and asking your child to match the number of coins to the price of a higher value coin, such as 10p or 50p.

Speak openly about small financial decisions

Set a good example with your own finances

Start getting your child involved with minor financial decisions, such as which brands and items to buy when shopping. This way they can understand the decisions you make while also feeling in control of certain financial choices.

There are no two ways about it, children learn money habits from their parents.

Showing them small activities, such as checking the receipt after your shop or putting money into savings can start developing positive habits from a young age.

Older children could also help with budgeting while shopping if you ask them to keep a running total of the items you buy. Not only will this help their maths skills, but it can also help them to understand how small items can still add up in price and not everything is affordable on a budget.

Use pocket money to teach children how to save Alongside teaching children the relationship between work and money, household chores and pocket money is also a great opportunity to show children how to save. If your child has shown interest in a more expensive purchase, you could set them up with an old-fashioned piggy bank where they can ‘deposit’ their earnings or create a chart for them to fill out so they can track how much money they have.

Use trips to the shop to learn about saving vs. spending Another practical way to teach a child about the benefits of saving is by visiting shops. Allow them full control of their own money on the understanding that if they don’t have enough, they won’t be able to borrow any more. The more they feel in control of their own finances, the more they will be able to make sensible decisions when it comes to spending or saving.

Teach older children about selling old toys for extra money If you don’t want to give your child pocket money, teaching them about ways to earn money for themselves is a helpful alternative. When they’re old enough, you could ask them to go through their old toys, books and clothes and set aside which ones they’d like to sell.

You can then sell these on their behalf through online auction sites such as eBay or Facebook Marketplace. Not only is this a great way for your child to feel independent in earning their own money, it presents an opportunity to discuss how to use the internet safely.
