Police in Leicestershire, England, have tried an odd way to save money: sending officers to investigate attempted burglaries at only even-numbered houses, the BBC reported. Tourney: No girls allowed VIRGINIA No, this absurd bit of sexism did not happen in 1963. This happened last weekend.

Ten young basketball players returned home to Charlottesville, Va., feeling pretty low after their five-game winning streak at a national tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C., was cut short when they were disqualified.

Because one of their players, Kymora Johnson, is a girl.

The Charlottesville Cavaliers were on fire at the National Travel Basketball Association’s annual tournament last weekend. Then, as they headed to the finals, tournament officials suddenly invoked a new rule. In the age of Katie Ledecky, Ronda Rousey, Serena Williams and Carli Lloyd, the officials said Kymora was not eligible to play. “ I wa s , l i ke , sh o cke d ,” said Kymora, who’s 10. “And disappointed.”

Kymora, who plays point guard and shooting guard, loves basketball. Whenever she’s on the court, she feels “motivated and excited.”

When she was 5, she wanted to play on a team. And because there were no girls’ teams for that age, her mom, Jessica ThomasJohnson, signed her up for the boys’ team, the Cavaliers.

Kymora has never felt excluded or picked on or singled out. The boy Cavs played ball with the girl Cav, and no one gave it a second thought. She had joined them at the national tournament for the past two years. No big deal.

But apparently, this year, the association wrote a new rule

that says girls can play in league games and scrimmages. But when it comes to the big, national tourney? No girls allowed.

“I can’t believe this is 2015, and my daughter isn’t allowed to play with boys,” Thomas-Johnson said. “What message does this send to other girls? What message does it send to boys?”

John Whitley, NTBA president, told the Daily Progress in Charlottesville that the association made its new, no-girl rule clear.

And he said tournament officials didn’t make an issue with Kymora because they only saw her on the bench, even though she played and scored a few points.

“We have no problem with the girls sitting on the bench,” Whitley told the newspaper. “We don’t care who sits on the bench with the teams, that goes for anybody … to sit on the bench.”

It would’ve been easy to go back to Charlottesville and forget about all of it. But not only does Kymora want to play with her Cavs next year, she wants to send the message to girls everywhere that they shouldn’t back down.

“You have to fight for your freedom,” she said. “You have to fight for the right to do it.”

Ads featuring Rudd aim to help find missing kids THE DISTRICT Relisha Rudd and Jacob and Sarah Hoggle — the faces that have become icons of lost innocence in the D.C. area — will soon be gracing 50 bus shelters around the city and another 14 billboards in the Baltimore area as part of a national campaign to bring home missing youth.

Officials with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children announced the initiative Wednesday, saying Clear Channel Outdoor Americas had agreed to use its digital ad spaces in the region to help publicize the cases

of missing kids. For four minutes every hour, until early September, Clear Channel will put pictures of Relisha and the Hoggle kids — and other missing children — on the shelters and billboards in hopes someone sees and recognizes them, officials said.

Officials said they are planning similar efforts in Chicago, Minneapolis and Los Angeles.

“Missing children do come home,” said Michelle Collins, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s chief operating officer.

In the cases of Relisha, Jacob

and Sarah, the outlook is bleak.

Relisha disappeared in early 2014. The janitor with whom Relisha was last seen, Kahlil Tatum, killed his wife and himself as authorities were probing Relisha’s whereabouts.

Montgomery County investigators also worry that Jacob, 2, and Sarah, 3, are dead, and they are building a homicide case against the pair’s schizophrenic mother.

Montgomery County police identified the couple who died in a murder-suicide at a Germantown gas station Tuesday as Shakina Marie Perkins-Moody and Johnnie Perkins. Authorities say Perkins, 42, shot Perkins-Moody, 34, then killed himself. Authorities said Perkins had been sentenced to at least eight years in prison for narcotics distribution in 2012, yet was released and arrested in recent months, the latest in July.

The National Zoo says it humanely euthanized a 10-year-old male cheetah Wednesday. The cheetah, Zabini, had weakness in his hind legs, which is a possible symptom of a neurological disorder, as well as fast-declining liver and kidneys, according to the zoo. Veterinarians were treating his legs Monday and discovered signs of suspected liver disease. In a follow-up exam, they discovered that his kidneys and liver were worsening and decided to euthanize him. (TWP)

A coalition of preservation groups wants to buy and maintain the historic Reeves farmhouse at Arlington’s Bluemont Park, even as the county prepares to sell the property. Karl VanNewkirk, president of the Arlington Historical Society, said his organization, the Boulevard Manor Civic Association, and Preservation Arlington are forming a nonprofit group with the intent of buying the 116-year-old structure, which was the last working farm in the county. A Christmas-tree-fueled fire in January consumed a $6 million Annapolis mansion and killed four children and their grandparents.

Report: Christmas tree sparked blaze MARYLAND The 15-foot Fraser fir that twinkled with Christmas lights was showing its age. After six weeks on display in the castle-like mansion overlooking the water in Annapolis, its branches were drooping and its needles were dropping.

The tree was supposed to come down Jan. 20. But the night before it was to be removed, it became the tinder fueling a blaze that consumed Don and Sandra Pyle’s home, leaving the couple and their four grandchildren dead.

That the tree was slated to be removed the day after the blaze was yet another devastating detail that emerged from a report released Wednesday investigating one of the deadliest fires Maryland has seen in decades.

“That was one of the worst pieces of information that came

out of this,” said Dave Cheplak, a spokesman and special agent for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives field division in Baltimore.

The report also detailed work ATF researchers conducted in the aftermath of the fire. Investigators ordered three trees similar to the one displayed in the Pyle home and conducted controlled burns at their lab in Beltsville, Md. The trees watered weekly ignited in anywhere from five to 30 seconds, according to the report. But a tree watered daily took about seven minutes to catch. The two trees watered weekly were consumed in less than a minute, while the tree watered daily extinguished on its own. The tree in the Pyle home was watered about once a week, officials said.

Experts confirm wing debris is from MH370 The fragment found on Reunion Island last week may unlock clues KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA The wing fragment that washed ashore last week on a remote Indian Ocean beach is a piece of the Malaysia Airlines jetliner that disappeared under mysterious circumstances more than 16 months ago, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said Wednesday.

“The international team of experts have conclusively confirmed that the aircraft debris found on Reunion Island is indeed from MH370,” Najib said in a statement.

The piece was being examined in a French laboratory, and investigators there are expected to render a definitive

judgment this week.

Confirmation that the wing fragment, known as a flaperon, came from the missing Boeing 777 jetliner establishes that Flight 370 crashed somewhere in the Indian Ocean, laying to rest conspiracy theories that it had been diverted by hijackers or spirited off to a foreign country.

“We now have physical evidence that … flight MH370 tragically ended in the southern Indian Ocean,” Najib said, according to The Associated Press.

It does not, however, provide much help to those who are searching for the rest of the airplane and the remains of the 239 people who were on board.

In addition to confirming the provenance of the 777 flap, investigators will examine the metal

with high-powered microscopes to gain insight into what caused the plane to go down, AP reports.

Its condition may provide hints of whether the plan crashed because of a fire, explosion or hit the water after running out of fuel.

The wing piece was found last week by a crew cleaning debris from a rocky, little used beach on Reunion Island, a French possession that is closer to Africa than the search area off Australia.

Sea life that has attached itself to the wing section may provide some clues as to the path it took during more than 500 days floating about the Indian Ocean. A new SEC rule could reveal the hug gap between CEO and worker compensation

BUSINESS The Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday made it official: Public companies will soon have to say exactly how their chief executives’ payday compares with a typical employee’s.

In a 3-to-2 vote, the commission backed a long-delayed rule demanding that companies publicly share their “pay ratio,” how the chief executive’s pay compares to the median pay of workers.

Soon, millions of workers will know how their top boss’s payday compares with their own, revealing a potentially embarrassing disparity in corporate riches that many companies have long fought to keep hidden.

Calling it “one of the most controversial rules” to arise out of the sweeping Dodd-Frank reform following the financial crisis, the rule’s approving members, including SEC chair Mary Jo White, called it a thoughtful and reasonable measure that would help investors and workers better understand how companies

reward their workforces.

But the SEC’s two Republican commissioners belittled the rule as an easily misconstrued burden built to embarrass big businesses. Commissioner Dan Gallagher decried it as a “lowquality” number that was “likely to be useless for anything but naming and shaming” well-paid corporate execs. He added, “Addressing income inequality is not the province of the SEC.” While the average American’s pay and benefits have been growing at the slowest pace in 33 years, executive wages have soared. Fifty years ago, the typical chief executive made $20 for every dollar a worker made; now, that gap is more than $300 to $1, and it’s growing.

The pay ratio, at the center of years of corporate arm-wrestling, could ratchet up the pressure on big companies to bring runaway executive pay under control.

Companies will have to share the ratio starting in 2017, seven years after Congress first mandated the rule go into effect. Supporters of the rule — including Congressional Democrats, workers’ unions and some institutional investors — have questioned what took so long, with Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton saying last month, “There is no excuse for taking five years to get this done.”

After the SEC’s vote, business groups again voiced their disapproval for the rule, and some are expected to sue the agency.

Ross’ poise has paid off for Nationals NATIONALS Nationals first baseman Tyler Moore didn’t know much about right-hander Joe Ross before the two spent a month together as housemates in spring training.

It was then, Moore says, that he discovered that the pitching prospect was “a 22-year-old kid with a 30-year-old’s mind.”

Five months later, the consensus in the clubhouse is that Ross, who was called up from Class AAA Syracuse on June 6 and made his major-league debut that day, shows poise and maturity rarely seen in rookie pitchers.

“He’s going to be around this game for a long time. He’s got some serious composure,” shortstop Ian Desmond told reporters in New York after Ross allowed just two runs in 61/3 innings Saturday at sold-out Citi Field.

Added Moore: “That’s a huge tool, being so cool in [high-pressure] situations. … He seems to love those moments.”

As the Nationals battle the Mets for first place in the NL East, Ross (2-3, 3.0 0 ERA) will make his seventh bigleague start at 4:05 p.m. today (MASN) against the visiting Diamondbacks.

With right-hander Stephen Strasburg nearing a return from the disabled list, Ross might be making his final start for a while.

He is coming off his fifth consecutive quality start and has taken advantage of an effective slider while striking out 40 and walking just four in 39 innings this season.

“Everybody can hit the fastball here,” said Ross, who has thrown his slider 36 percent of the time, according to fangraphs.com.

“I feel like the slider has been a big pitch for me on strikeouts — being able to throw it for strikes in a fastball count.”

Wall keeps chance alive for Olympics

Gold-plated versatility Bethesda’s Ledecky gets third victory and takes aim at two more SWIMMING Katie Ledecky is unbeatable in the distance races. Turns out she’s awfully good going shorter, too.

The 18-year-old from Bethesda rallied to win the 200-meter freestyle at the world championships Wednesday, beating a stellar field that included teammate Missy Franklin, the defending champion, and two-time winner Federica Pellegrini of Italy.

She has won 13 times in a row in major international competition dating back to her breakout at the London Olympics in 2012.

Wednesday, Ledecky had a good view of the competition from lane 7. Breathing to her right, she saw all but one of her rivals and halfway through she knew another victory was hers.

She rallied from fourth after the first two laps to touch first in 1 minute, 55.16 seconds for her third gold medal of the championships in Kazan, Russia. She already had won the 400 free and the 1,500 free.

Pellegrini (1:55.32) was second and Franklin (1:55.49) third.

“I knew it was going to be a really competitive field and that was something that was really special for me,” Ledecky said.

“It was an honor to be in a heat like that.”

At the world championships

two years ago in Barcelona, she won four golds and set two world records. She has a chance for five golds this time, with the 400 and 800 freestyles remaining in the event that ends Sunday.

“I never really feel pressure,” said Ledecky, who burst onto the world stage with a gold in the 800 free at the 2012 Games. “Going into London I didn’t and since then I’ve just tried to maintain that same mentality.”

With a year until the start of the 2016 Games, Ledecky could try to add the 100 free. That would give her a chance for six medals in Brazil.

Ledecky’s successes have been the lone bright spot for the U.S. team halfway through the meet.

The Wizards’ John Wall, who broke his left hand in the playoffs, will participate in the Team USA minicamp Aug. 11-13 in Las Vegas, keeping alive his chance to play in the 2016 Olympics. Wall was hesitant about joining the camp after being cut last summer from the U.S. team prepping for the FIBA World Cup, but Team USA is requiring attendance to remain eligible for the Summer Games. TOURING AS A SOLO ACT, Radiohead drummer Philip Selway has returned to the kinds of venues

the iconic rock band left behind long ago. “With Radiohead, we’re playing places like sheds and arenas, which is very suited to what we’ve been doing musically, and they’re great venues to play, but there’s an audience connection that you miss from smaller clubs,” Selway says. “And I suppose because I’m approaching this from a different angle onstage — being out in front of the stage — it is a completely different experience for me anyway.” That’s right: You won’t find Selway behind the kit when the 48-year-old and his three-piece backing band headline the intimate Rock and Roll Hotel on Sunday. Instead, he’ll strum the acoustic guitar, play piano and, sometimes, just sing. Selway is touring behind his second solo album, last year’s “Weatherhouse,” which takes the sparse, acoustic nature of his 2010 debut, “Familial,” to fuller, more experimental and occasionally Radiohead-like places. RUDI GREENBERG (EXPRESS) How has the transition to becoming a frontman been for someone who has spent most of his career behind a drum kit?

It was absolutely petrifying at first, a very unnatural place to be. But it’s like with anything, any kind of skill that you learn — you need to build up the experience with it and find a spot where you feel comfortable in your own skin and where you feel that you bring something of value, you hope, to that place.

The aim of it is for people to take something away from that evening, whether that be a bit of escapism, or just to be lost in that moment of the show. Those are my favorite shows when I go to see other people.

How did you approach “Weatherhouse” differently than your first album?

For the first record, there was a lot that I felt that I needed to learn: I had to find a singing voice, I was really getting my chops together as a songwriter, and I wasn’t hearing drum patterns on that record. I didn’t have the headspace, I think, for finding my way into the drumming on that record, and I had the very good fortune of working with [drummer] Glenn Kotche from Wilco on that record, so that was marvelous. I learned a lot of lessons from “Familial.” I had those worries about whether I could see that process through of writing a whole album myself, and finding a

singing voice. Going into “Weatherhouse,” I knew I could do that, so that frees up a bit of headspace in terms of turning my attention toward drumming again.

How does songwriting start for you?

The songwriting process starts with the musical side. That can come together very quickly, actually. I’ll write on guitar and I will put ideas down on my phone as they come up and then return to them a little further down the line and develop the ideas a bit more. For this record, lyrically I had one complete lyric going into recording. Going through the process of arranging and recording the musical side, and

then really sitting down with those instrumental tracks and writing the lyrics, that was quite a long process. But it was a nice way of doing things because then you could actually respond [lyrically] to what was happening musically and arrangement-wise within the songs.

Do you want to continue making solo albums?

Oh, definitely.

and start working on the ninth Radiohead album?

We’ve been [recording] a little bit. It’s been pockets of it, for eight or nine months, but we start in earnest in September.

Are you looking forward to getting back to Radiohead?

Oh, yeah, we’ve got a pretty full schedule coming up. We’re poised to just really immerse ourselves in it now.

What do you get out of making these albums and performing with your band that you don’t get out of the day job?

I have quite a defined role within [Radiohead], which is drumming and percussion, which is great.

That’s a big thing for me musically. But I do have other strings to my musical bows, if I can mix my metaphors for a moment. Doing the solo work allows me to dive into those and find out what I’m capable of and, I suppose, it allows you to develop something that is identifiably you, as well.

You get a greater sense of what your own creative voice is.

So you’ve sketched out some stuff and now you try to figure out what, exactly, these songs are?

Yeah, absolutely, that’s a good way of putting it.

You’re wrapping up your solo tour in D.C. Is the plan to then go

Touring as a frontman, have you gained more of an appreciation for what Thom Yorke does every night on a Radiohead tour?

Oh, I think being the drummer is much harder — he’s got an easy life!

The Newseum tips its cap to the first decade of Nationals baseball EXHIBITS Over the span of 10 years, the Washington Nationals have gone from a struggling team taking the field at the decrepit RFK Stadium to preseason World Series favorites led by Bryce Harper and Max Scherzer.

The key moments of the team’s remarkable transformation are explored in “Nationals at 10: Baseball Makes News,” a small exhibit of 10 artifacts and pieces of baseball history, which opened last week on the second floor of the Newseum.

The show, arranged chronologically, is a whistle-stop tour of the Nationals’ greatest moments, and it plays out just like the game footage that screens on a loop above the display. There are lineup cards from the first Nationals game, in Philadelphia, and from the last game at RFK Stadium; the jacket and jersey President Barack Obama wore

while throwing out the first pitch at Nationals Park; items related to the mega-hyped debuts of Harper and Stephen Strasburg; a champagne bottle popped in the locker room after the team clinched the 2012 NL East title; and the home plate from Jordan Zimmermann’s no-hitter on the final day of the 2014 season.

That home plate is Item No. 10 on the list of the “10 memorable media moments” selected

by Newseum curators for the exhibit, but it’s not the end. An extra case displays the cover of Sports Illustrated’s 2015 MLB preview issue, featuring a grinning Harper and Scherzer, and a photo from Scherzer’s June 20 no-hitter against the Pirates. (“We’re a museum of news, so we have to be up to date,” says

Newseum exhibits writer John Powell. “We’ll update [the exhibit] if they go to the World Series.”)

Baseball purists may roll their eyes at the inclusion of the Presidents Race — images of the racing presidents (minus newcomer Calvin Coolidge) are projected on the floor, and a glass case holds the golden sneakers Teddy Roosevelt wore when he finally won his first race in October 2012. That nod to Teddy seems to sum up the feel-good vibe of the exhibit. You might think the Nationals have always been perennial postseason favorites.

Those difficult early years, with six seasons under the .500 mark, are mostly glossed over.

In keeping with the Newseum’s mission, “Nationals at 10” also explores the team’s relationship

“There were over 200 reporters at Strasburg’s debut,” Powell says. “These were hugely hyped moments. We wanted to talk about how journalists have covered the team over the last 10 years.”

A wall panel examines the birth of the Nats Insider blog and how the Nationals became one of the first teams to allow bloggers in the press box. An interactive area next to the exhibit allows visitors to report on a Nationals game in front of a green screen.

For Nats fans, this exhibit is less educational and more like a hyper-local Hall of Fame, offering a rare chance to peer at Harper’s jersey up close or marvel at the piece of lumber Ryan Zimmerman swung to hit the walk-off home run that won the first regularseason game at Nationals Park.

Getting the full picture Robert Frank’s iconic 1950s work “The Americans” proved that photobooks can be more than just books of photos — they’re a way to experience the world through a photographer’s eyes. “The way the photographs are ordered, with motifs and figures recurring throughout, creates an overall experience,” says Yuri Long, rare book librarian at the National Gallery of Art. Robert Frank, ‘The Americans’ First published in France in 1958, “The Americans” is a series of 83 photographs Swiss-born photographer Robert Frank took on a road trip through the U.S. in 1955. His camera captured all kinds of Americans, including fancy old ladies in New York and cowboys in New Mexico. “It’s a picture of America in the 1950s,” says Yuri Long, “but a darker side that we don’t usually associate with the pop culture of the ’50s.” One of the many iconic images in “The Americans”— and the cover of this 1969 edition — shows New Orleans under Jim Crow laws, with white passengers at the front of a bus and African-Americans in the back.

Containing 100 shots of the same person’s face in close-up, Roni Horn’s 2011 book documents the subtle changes in an Icelandic friend’s expression as she comes out of the water. “It almost looks like the same picture,” Long says, “but when you look closely, you see that her lips are a bit more parted, for example.” These tiny details create a strangely personal connection with the woman in the photographs, and her minute reactions to the water sliding down her face are “a meditation of how humans are formed by their surroundings,” Long says.

One of Long’s favorite photobooks in the show, Danny Lyon’s “The Bikeriders” tells a visual story of the everyday lives of members of the Chicago Outlaws motorcycle club in the 1960s. After college, Lyon decided the best way to document any subculture was to join its ranks, so he became a member and rode around the country for four years. In addition to his photographs, Lyon included interviews with members, providing a seldom-seen glimpse into their lives.

One of the newest books on display, Doug Rickard’s 2012 work is a collection of images the photographer found on Google Street View, bringing “the idea of the American road trip to the 21st century,” Long says. Rather than taking screen shots, Rickard used his film camera to take photos of his screen. “It’s amazing how some of these photographs have such formal compositions, even though Rickard found them amongst the chance captures of the Google car,” Long says.

The widening world of Preservation Hall Thanks to Ben Jaffe, New Orleans’ historic jazz band is thriving MUSIC Ben Jaffe was born into Preservation Hall.

The musician’s parents, Allan and Sandra Jaffe, founded the now-historic New Orleans jazz venue — and its namesake band — in 1961.

“They were just a young 20-something couple who were looking for themselves, maybe, and found it in New Orleans,” Jaffe says. “They never really had the ambition of creating a full-blown institution.”

Jaffe’s dad played in the band, and, though he didn’t have a title, he ran the place. Jaffe took over day-to-day operations at 22, right after he finished college.

Now 44, Jaffe runs the organization as its creative director and plays bass and tuba in the touring Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Annually, the venue (an intimate, unamplified space in the

French Quarter) hosts nearly 400 performances, the band plays about 100 gigs on the road and the Preservation Hall Foundation organizes hundreds of events through its youth outreach programs. (The band headlines the Birchmere on Aug. 13.)

“Just keeping up a spreadsheet of all of that is a full-time job,” Jaffe says. “When I look at myself in the mirror, I see a musician. That’s how I approach business — as a musician. But it’s been interesting for me to walk that very narrow tightrope between business and the creative world.”

Under Jaffe’s leadership, Preservation Hall has crossed over into the pop and rock world, hitting the festival circuit and collaborating with such bands as My Morning Jacket, Foo Fighters and Arcade Fire.

The band, which has a rotating cast of players that range in age from 30 to 90, continues to make new music (My Morning Jacket’s Jim James produced the group’s 2013 album, “That’s It!”) and Jaffe, for his part, works tirelessly to keep the spirit of his family’s business alive.

“Preservation Hall is not a bar and it’s not a nightclub,” Jaffe says. “It’s a music venue, it’s a salon and it’s a gallery. It’s a place where the community gathers.

It’s a model that people can learn a lot from — far beyond the music that takes place there. The music is like the little cherry on top of this beautiful experience.”

‘Daily’ by ‘Daily,’ he taught us staff perfected a lightning-quick ability to fashion a retort out of the day’s news. Their video clip collages — supercuts — were a way for a politician or a pundit to be lampooned simply by his or her own words.

The supercut has a remarkable power to reduce partisan talking points to the repetitive ravings of apparent lunatics. After a particularly effective one, Stewart wouldn’t even need a punchline.

His deadpan reaction would be enough, a “really?” or “seriously?” indicating both disgust and rejection of what was being said by the powers that be. It’s a way of telling the world that this sort of nonsense (the obfuscation, the doublespeak, the lies) just isn’t going to fly anymore.

Journalists eventually learned not to feel threatened; over time, their work even began to echo some of “The Daily Show’s” techniques. Formerly staid news organizations eased up on a stultifying obligation to always air “both sides” of an issue ad infinitum, and even dropped in a wry observation here and there.

TELEVISION Nothing comes to an end in television without a silly but also meaningful grieving process.

The longer the run and more devoted the fan base, the louder the wails. Tonight’s end of Jon Stewart’s run as the host of Comedy Central’s “Daily Show” cuts deeper than the usual sign-off.

Even though the 52-year-old host announced his departure nearly six months ago, his devotees still speak the language of denial: How can he leave us?

That’s especially because we’re coming up on the season in which he thrives: a presidential campaign. Stewart took over hosting the show from Craig Kilborn in 1999, but he and “The Daily Show” became indispensable in the bizarre aftermath of the neck-’n’-neck 2000 presidential election — “Indecision 2000,” as “The Daily Show” dubbed it. His skewering of political convention and old-school media made Stewart this generation’s Edward R. Murrow and its Mark Twain.

By the time the 2004 campaign came around, Stewart’s viewers relied on the show as heavily as the antiwar movement of the 1960s and ’70s leaned on its music. Stewart and his writing

Stewart and “Colbert Report” host Stephen Colbert staged “The Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear” on the National Mall as a goofy, star-studded variety show with a message: Americans aren’t as divided as the media portray them. “The image of Americans that is reflected back to us … is false,” Stewart declared.

became a reliable way to project confidence. Ultimately, though, no matter how much the media or the politicos were hip to Stewart’s style, they would almost always be the losers in this equation — old school, old ways, hopelessly unhip to the plain truth.

For a long time now, there have been signs that Stewart himself was fed up with being fed up.

Could you blame him? The world never got better, no matter how many times he rolled his eyes or shook his head in sarcastic disgust. The horrors became more horrific — a mass shooting occurs nearly every day; a gross violation of civil rights spreads across the Internet; foreign policy crises morph and become more hopeless.

Although it is difficult for his fans to imagine a world without Stewart (or to readily welcome his much younger and entirely different replacement, Trevor Noah), I would suggest that Stewart’s work is essentially finished.

Unfurl that “Mission Accomplished” banner — we now live in a world of viewers and voters who, thanks in no small part to “The Daily Show,” are smarter, more skeptical and more able to react to news with equal measures of outrage and sophisticated wit.

Anyone with spare time and a search engine can assemble a supercut or some spot-on sketch that is devastating and insightful. Follow the right people on Twitter and you will never lack for wickedly funny dissections of the news, in real time. The language and verbal style of “The Daily Show” saturates writing everywhere, in print, online and in status updates. Look at how fast this tribe can move on issues, whether it’s about the senseless death of a woman under police custody or the senseless death of a lion in Zimbabwe.

It may be a sappy way to send “The Daily Show” off but that’s how it feels: You had the power all along. You are your own Jon Stewart now. HANK STUEVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A former musician for electronica act Owl City has been charged with criminal sexual contact and attempting to lure a 14-year-old girl to his hotel room in Atlantic City in 2013.

Thirty-year-old Daniel Jorgensen was indicted Tuesday by a grand jury in New Jersey. Authorities say he committed criminal sexual contact on the beach and then tried to lure the girl to his hotel room to have sex. (AP)

Making us cry was a tough call for Shonda

How to become DFW It took Jason Segel a lot of research to star in ‘End of the Tour’ FILM When reading David Foster Wallace’s 1,079-page “Infinite Jest” is only part of your preparation for a role, you know you have a challenge ahead. That’s what Jason Segel faced to play Wallace in James Ponsoldt’s drama “The End of the Tour.”

Not quite a biopic, the film is based on interviews conducted

by Rolling Stone journalist David Lipsky on the last four days of the “Jest” press tour in 1996.

As Lipsky, Jesse Eisenberg is both skeptical and desperately jealous of his more-successful subject. As the awkward and brilliant Wallace, Segel is defensive and still uncomfortable with his newfound fame.

It was a stretch for Segel, best known as one of Judd Apatow’s class pets, which is why he turned to Wallace’s writing, videos of his speeches and tapes from Lipsky’s interview.

“You can’t paraphrase this dialogue — David Foster Wallace is just so much smarter than I am,” said Segel, 35. “Any of the old tricks I get to use in improv- type

movies, they don’t apply.”

On this press tour, Segel spoke about becoming Wallace.

What did you find was the best way to get in Wallace’s head?

It was definitely reading “Infinite Jest.” It’s perhaps his most personal work. The other reason [I chose] to focus on it is because I’ve done a lot of press tours. All of these things we’re talking about right now are at the front of my brain because, for the past few weeks, this is what I’ve been talking about. So what occurred to me is that what [Wallace] is thinking about actively, what is at the front of his mind, is what he’s been thinking and talking about every day: the themes of “Infinite Jest.”

How did you embody Wallace physically?

As a big guy, which I am, and David Foster Wallace is a big guy, there’s this thing I do that I could imagine he might do. When you’re big you sort of subjugate yourself to other people, there’s a hunch, you talk quietly. It’s an effort to take away the fact that if I stand up straight to you and I speak confidently … … you think you look terrifying?

Yeah. There are moments, especially given the size difference between me and Jesse, when James [Ponsoldt] would tell me to move my hands less. He’d say, “It looks like you’re going to attack him.”

For a movie that’s about David Foster Wallace, he felt at arm’s length the whole time.

I think the movie is through the lens of David Lipsky’s experience. You see a guy, David Foster Wallace, who is ready to have a real discussion because he is going through some stuff, but Lipsky comes through with such an agenda that he walks away missing the real story.

I liked that this movie is a fable of what happens when your hero turns out to be just a normal guy.

There’s some part of us that needs our idol to be something other than us. If your idol is something other than you, then you’re able to justify why you haven’t achieved stuff yet. If you meet your idol and find out, “Oh, he’s just me, but he sat in that room with more focus and more dedication,” that’s tough to deal with. It’s a little like when you find out that being in shape is just being healthy and exercising. LORI McCUE (EXPRESS)

Hollywood Reporter: Colin Farrell joins Harry Potter spinoff “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”

Shonda Rhimes says it “wasn’t easy or fun” to kill Patrick Dempsey’s character off of ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Dempsey played Dr. Derek Shepherd, aka “McDreamy,” who was Ellen Pompeo’s love interest for 11 seasons on the drama. Speaking to TV critics Tuesday, the “Grey’s” creator said she was faced with either having Shepherd leave Pompeo’s Meredith Grey and taint their love story, or be killed off, keeping it intact. “The only way to preserve what felt true to me was that Derek was gonna have to die,” she said. Rhimes teased that season 12 will be “lighter in tone” and shows Pompeo’s Grey in a position she never thought she’d be in, as a widowed mother. (AP)

Movies aren’t getting much more equal The University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism examined the 700 top-grossing films between 2007 and 2014 for a study that gives more evidence of inequality in Hollywood, on-screen and off. The results, researchers said, reveal “a complete picture of Hollywood’s indisputable bias against featuring females, people of color and LGBT characters on screen.” JAKE COYLE (AP)
