A funeral home meets its end THE DISTRICT The thick, dusty ledgers were scattered about the cluttered office, 18 of them, their pages filled with neat script documenting the deaths of thousands of black Washingtonians over the course of a half-century. The volumes belong to the Hall Brothers Funeral Home, whose owner was shutting down the business after nearly 80 years and preparing to sell its Florida Avenue headquarters, a Victorian rowhouse across from the Howard Theatre. The demise of Hall Brothers — the last of a half-dozen blackowned funeral parlors along the U Street-Florida Avenue NW corridor — is another marker in the evolution of a neighborhood once at the core of African American life in Washington. Now the strip embodies the demographic and economic shifts that have redefined the city, with young professionals, a preponderance of them white, replacing black families. At its peak, from the 1950s through the 1980s, Hall Brothers

performed as many as 140 funerals a year. In 2018, it handled four. “They moved out or died out,” the owner, Richard Ables, 77, whose uncles founded the funeral home in 1941, said of his lost clientele. “I’m sitting in here dying with the business.

It’s time to go.” Last Wednesday, Ables sold the property for about $2 million, more than twice the assessed value. Land records show that his uncle Ocy D. Hall paid $10,000 for the rowhouse near Seventh Street and Florida Avenue. The real estate agent who

negotiated the sale, Amy Harasz, said she was unable to divulge details about the sale or plans for the property. Earlier this year, Derek Gray, a D.C. Public Library archivist, went to Hall Brothers to inspect its registries of the dead. Gray declared them a “gem for genealogists.” The library system took the registries, along with assorted memorabilia — samples of hand fans, funeral programs and the brass-coated “Hall Brothers” nameplate that was in the side window of its hearse. Ables shared stories about the neighborhood and performers he saw at the Howard Theatre, and Gray said, “We knew we needed to pull out a tape recorder.” The archivist hopes Ables will make himself available for an oral history. It’s something he may have time for in retirement, when he’s not contemplating the future, including, as it happens, his own burial. “Don’t want to be buried in a suit,” Ables said on a recent afternoon, relaxing in Hall Brothers’ parlor. “I want a nice pair of silk pajamas and a smoking jacket. A jazz trio playing at the service. A solid wood mahogany casket. Something that will last.” PAUL SCHWARTZMAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Md. arrests fuel ICE debate

MONTGOMERY COUNTY Montgomery County’s top elected official, Marc Elrich, stood before a bank of TV cameras this summer to praise the county’s diversity and promise the most limited of cooperation with federal immigration agents. “I’d say we’ve learned how to manage immigration pretty well,” he said, “without a lot of drama and nonsense.” Since then, there’s been plenty of both — at least according to the opposing sides of a roiling political debate centered on the leftleaning Maryland jurisdiction. National attention has fallen on Montgomery in large part because over the five-week stretch since the county executive’s pronouncement, seven undocumented immigrants living in the county were arrested on sex assault charges. Two were accused of raping an 11-year-old girl. Another reportedly tried to kill his victim by choking her in a hallway of her apartment building. By Friday, Ken Cuccinelli, the acting director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, tweeted a debate challenge to Elrich, D, over the merits of what Cuccinelli described as the county’s sanctuary protection policies for undocumented immigrants. “It’s a stunt,” Elrich shot back in an interview Friday. At the heart of the sharp political clash is a policy debate about how local jails respond

to federal “detainer” requests, which Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents use to try to have jails alert them when a criminal suspect whom federal officials suspect is in the country illegally is about to be released from custody. Some jurisdictions have robust cooperating agreements. Local officials not only alert federal agents of pending releases, they give the federal agents up to 48 hours to get there to pick up a suspect with a detainer. Other areas don’t honor detainer requests, thinking that avoiding the process completely

assures their residents that local officials aren’t communicating at any level with ICE and assisting in deportation efforts. Elrich, who took office last

year, moved Montgomery closer to the second group. Under him, jail officials only notify ICE of a pending release of someone with a detainer who has been charged with serious crimes such as murders, sex assaults and violent assaults. Elrich also recently directed county jail officials not to allow ICE agents into the secure, locked portions of jails, a shift made as part of a broader executive order restricting the agents from any “nonpublic space within a government facility.” That approach seems correct, said Gustavo Torres, executive director of Casa de Maryland, an immigrant rights group, who said Elrich’s policy gives ICE a chance to pick up the most violent suspects, but not detain anyone longer than necessary and not engage in any kind of immigration enforcement. “It’s a tragedy when crimes committed by anyone get politicized,” he said. “We need to let the judiciary process play out for the suspects and focus on the victims of these terrible crimes and their families.” Critics within Montgomery say tepid compliance with detainer requests is a draw for people apt to commit local crimes. “That makes the county less safe,” said Alexander Bush, chairman of the Montgomery County Republican Party. Wait, wait, sorry: Metro woes cause NPR host to blow DC Rider. Which wasn’t quite enough. When he got off at Tysons later, with a half-hour to get ready to leave for Wolf Trap, he tapped his SmarTrip on the machine and wondered why the gate didn’t open. It began, “a series of events and increasing frustration,” he said. “The sun was in an angle so you couldn’t read the display,” he said. He cupped his hand to shield the sun and saw he was 25 cents short. “25 cents!” he said. Metro announced plans last April to debut a mobile app this year that will let riders out of the gate with the tap of a smartphone. If you’re in a predicament like Sagal’s, you’ll be able to add money to the app with a credit card. But there’s no app yet, so he went to the “ExitFare” machine before the gates, where riders with insufficient funds can add to their fare cards. “Of course it doesn’t take credit cards,” he said, “even though the machine where I bought the card does take credit cards.” He hadn’t noticed that the machine says, “$1, $5, $10,” so he slid in one of the $20 bills he had on him, then watched the machine spit it out. He slid it back in and saw it slide out. Back in again … and back out. Sagal grew up spending summers in Cambridge, Mass., where his grandparents owned a corner grocery store. He used to work there sometimes. “So I know what it’s like to

The radio show host was running late, but he was trapped on the Metro. On the airwaves, and during an interview last week, Peter Sagal, the host of NPR’s comedic current affairs quiz show “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me!”, comes across as an affable guy — not the type to rant at the manager of the Tysons Corner station. Sagal gets paid, after all, to make people laugh. The night before, he’d introduced José Andrés, the renowned D.C. chef, during a live taping of the Chicago-based show at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts. Andrés “is known for recently going to Puerto Rico and giving out thousands of meals to hurricane survivors for free,” Sagal had said, “prompting everyone back home in D.C. to say, ‘Hey, the Metro flooded that one time, where’s our food?’ ” But Metro can get the best of you sometimes, and you find yourself acting in a way that makes you need to apologize — though few do. Sagal had one of those moments, as he hurried back from D.C. to his hotel in Tysons Corner on the Silver Line. Earlier, as he was leaving for D.C., he’d puzzled at the array of prices on the chart above the fare machine at Tysons, unsure how much to load on his SmarTrip card. “Finally I said, ‘The hell with it,’ and picked some round number like $4,” Sagal told

stand there in an apron and get yelled at,” he said. But seeing the $20 bill come back out broke him. “I was having that particular emotional break that only happens when a trivial situation gradually escalates,” he said. He approached the station manager’s booth and knocked. Out spewed his frustrations: about the sun’s glare, the machine that wouldn’t take credit cards or cash either. He just wanted to get out. “Not any one of those things would spur entitled white-guy rage,” he said, “but cumulatively I completely lost my cool and I’m completely embarrassed.” The station manager just looked back and said nothing. “I could tell he’d dealt with this before,” Sagal said. The manager instead handed Sagal a quarter. Sagal wants to send him a note to say thanks, maybe offer some “Wait Wait” paraphernalia. And a quarter. But he didn’t catch his name. The manager wasn’t available to

comment last week, a Metro spokeswoman said. Sagal has been thinking about his privilege. He’d been on his way to his “cushy job,” and ranted at a man in a booth who has his own problems. “I just felt bad some poor guy had to deal with it, and how in a small measure I’d contributed to that guy’s bad day,” he said. He tweeted an apology. “Thank you to the Washington Metro employee at [Tysons] Corner who responded to my panicked, angry rant about not being able to get out of the damn station because I was $.25 short and all I had was a twenty and the machine wouldn’t take it and … by silently handing me a quarter.” “The toughest thing in any service industry must be handling panicked white guys who are just not used to any difficulty at all,” Sagal wrote. “He did it well.” Reach Kery Murakami at kery.murakami@washpost.com. TRANSPORTATION Metro’s inspector general said problems with track work and concrete structures on the troubled Silver Line rail project could create significant cost and operational issues and is urging the transit agency not to accept control of the line until the concerns are resolved. In management alerts issued Friday, Metro Inspector General Geoffrey A. Cherrington said a sealant being applied to prevent water from seeping into hundreds of defective concrete panels may not be working. A sampling of sealant already in place found it was not working in all cases, leaving some panels vulnerable to cracking. Unless the panels are replaced or the contractor comes up with another solution, Metro should not accept the work, he advised. Cherrington’s team also identified problems at the rail yard that is being built concurrently with the rail line. He said Metro’s consultants found too many small pieces of rock in the ballast for track beds that could cause drainage issues and lead to the rocks shifting. That movement, unless fixed, could cause the track to shift as trains travel on it. Both issues, if not properly addressed, “will create extraordinary cost, maintenance and operational issues early once WMATA take ownership and control of this project,” Cherrington wrote. Sister duo first to become Army generals

U.S. Customs officials on Monday said “confusion” over U.S. policy led ferry operator to order refugees’ removal.

Dorian survivors kicked off Florida-bound ferry Officials say move was error, Bahamians in peril are welcome in the U.S. FREEPORT, BAHAMAS Hundreds of Hurricane Dorian survivors crowded into a ferry anchored in Freeport, Bahamas, on Sunday evening, after days on the sweltering islands with limited food, water and power. Just 2½ hours across the ocean, safety and relief waited in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Then, an announcement blared from the boat’s intercom speakers. “Please, all passengers that don’t have a U.S. visa, please proceed to disembark,” a crew member said in a video.

Since Dorian devastated the islands earlier this month, killing at least 44 people, hundreds of Bahamian refugees have reportedly come to the U.S. after going through a screening process with only a passport and proof of no criminal record. The more than 100 refugees forced to disembark Sunday night were baffled about why they were turned away. U.S. Customs and Border Protection, however, says no rules have changed and laid the blame on the ferry operator, identified by local reporters as Balearia Caribbean, for not properly coordinating with government officials. Balearia Caribbean did not immediately return a request for comment.

A CBP official in Florida told Miami TV station WSVN that it was a “business decision” by Balearia to remove the refugees without visas. At a news conference Monday, acting CPB Commissioner Mark Morgan said there was “confusion” around the issue, but that the agency’s policy hadn’t changed: People fleeing the hurricane zone are welcome in the U.S. “This is a humanitarian mission,” Morgan said. “If your life is in jeopardy and you’re in the Bahamas ... you’re going to be allowed to come to the United States, whether you have travel documents or not.”

Two siblings marked a milestone for the U.S. Army this summer: Maj. Gen. Maria Barrett and Brig. Gen. Paula Lodi are believed to be the first pair of sisters to become generals, the military branch’s highest category of rank. Lodi, 51, was promoted to general July 12 and is the director of health care operations for the Army’s surgeon general. Barrett, 53, is the commanding general of NETCOM, which runs the Army’s cyber networks, and became a general in 2015. At Lodi’s promotion ceremony, Barrett presented her a beret with one-star rank insignia, symbolizing the history of women in the Army and the sisters serving together as generals. (TWP)

Scientist: NOAA likely violated integrity rules WEATHER The acting chief scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said his agency likely violated its scientific integrity rules last week when it publicly chastised a weather office that contradicted President Trump’s claim that Hurricane Dorian threatened Alabama. Two top NOAA civil servants not so quietly revolted against an unsigned agency press release issued late Friday rebuking the Birmingham weather office for saying Alabama was safe. The agency’s top scientist called Friday’s release “political” and the head of the National Weather Service said the office “did what any office would do to protect the public.” “My understanding is that this intervention to contradict the forecaster was not based on science but on external factors including reputation and appearance, or simply put, political,” acting chief scientist Craig McLean wrote to staffers Sunday night. Meanwhile, National Weather Service Director Louis Uccellini said forecasters in Birmingham did the right thing Sept. 1 when they tried to combat public panic that Dorian posed a threat. The NOAA policy says employees should not “intimidate or coerce employees, contractors, recipients of financial assistance awards, or others to alter or censor scientific findings.” JAY REEVES AND SETH BORENSTEIN (AP)

PM Johnson faces fresh challenges; law aims to delay any no-deal split LONDON British lawmakers demanded Monday that Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government release officials’ private correspondence about plans for Brexit, as the government prepared to suspend Parliament and send rebellious lawmakers home until two weeks

before the country is supposed to leave the European Union. Lawmakers used the remaining hours before the session of Parliament ended to deliver new blows to Johnson’s authority. A measure designed to stop Britain from crashing out of the EU without a deal became law after receiving the formal assent of Queen Elizabeth II. Legislators also demanded the government release, by Wednesday, emails and text messages

among aides and officials relating to suspending Parliament and planning for Brexit amid allegations that the suspension is being used to circumvent democracy. “It is blindingly obvious why we

Meanwhile, Speaker John Bercow, whose control of business in the House of Commons has made him a central player in the Brexit drama, announced he would step down after a decade in the job. Britain is due to leave the EU on Oct. 31, and Johnson says the country’s delayed exit must happen then, with or without a divorce agreement. But many lawmakers fear a no-deal Brexit would be economically devastating and are determined to stop him. McConnell’s legislative ‘graveyard’ Congress returned Monday with pressure mounting on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to address gun violence. But he has promised a “Grim Reaper” strategy focused on burying House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s legislative priorities, leaving big-ticket wins highly unlikely: Pelosi’s Democratic House churns out bills, the Republican Senate takes a pass, and the legislative calendar folds into campaign season. Democrats call it McConnell’s legislative “graveyard.” McConnell said he won’t make any moves without the president’s commitment to sign the bills into law. (AP)

While Americans overwhelming support these measures, Trump is exploring a more controversial option. According to The Post, the White House is considering a proposal to study whether mass shootings could be prevented by monitoring mentally ill people for small changes that might foretell violence. Former NBC Chairman Bob Wright, a longtime friend and associate of Trump’s, has briefed top officials on a proposal to create a new research agency called HARPA to come up with out-ofthe-box ways to tackle health problems, much like DARPA does for the military, said several people who have been briefed. Wright has presented a proposal that calls for exploring whether technology like phones

and smartwatches can be used to detect when mentally ill people are about to turn violent. Marisa Randazzo, former chief research psychologist for the U.S. Secret Service, raised some major concerns with the idea. Beyond the civil liberty concerns about monitoring people through their gadgets, she said, there’s the problem of false positives. Even if the technology could be developed, such a program would likely flag tens or hundreds of thousands — more possible suspects than actual shooters. Most concerning, she said, is that the plan is based on the flawed premise that mental illness is directly linked to mass shootings. “Everything we know from research tells us it’s a weak link at best.” (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

POLITICS Americans across party and demographic lines overwhelmingly support expanded background checks for gun buyers and allowing law enforcement to temporarily seize weapons from troubled individuals, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll, as President Trump and Republicans face fresh pressure to act. Although the poll found a continued partisan divide on more far-reaching gun-control proposals, public opinion was firmly behind Democrats’ push for action as Congress returned to Washington on Monday. Democrats and allied activists have been trying to kick-start a national push for new federal gun restrictions for weeks, since mass shootings last month in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. Urgency dissipated as a six-week congressional recess wore on, but a deadly rampage in West Texas on Aug. 31 has reignited the issue. In a letter to Trump released Monday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer urged the president to take the lead on gun violence legislation. “Your urgent, personal intervention is needed to stem the endless massacres of our fellow Americans by gunfire,” the top Democrats wrote to Trump. The Post-ABC poll found 86% of Americans support “red flag” provisions, which allow guns to be taken from people judged to be a danger to themselves or others. And 89% support expanding federal background checks to cover private sales and gun-show transactions. Both measures are supported by at least 8 in 10 Republicans, white evangelical Christians, members of gunowning households and other traditionally conservative groups.

TECHNOLOGY Attorneys general for 50 U.S. states and territories on Monday officially announced an antitrust investigation of Google, embarking on a wide-ranging review of a tech giant that Democrats and Republicans said may threaten competition, consumers and the continued growth of the web. Appearing on the steps of the Supreme Court, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton charged that Google “dominates all aspects of advertising on the Internet and searching on the Internet,” though he cautioned that despite his criticism the states had launched an investigation for now and not a lawsuit. Paxton said the probe’s initial focus is online advertising. Google is expected to rake in more than $48 billion in U.S. digital ad revenue year, far rivaling its peers, while capturing 75% of all spending on U.S. search ads, according to eMarketer. Some attorneys general appeared to raise additional complaints about Google, ranging from the way the company processes and ranks search results to the extent to which it may not fully protect users’ personal information. Paxton promised the probe would go wherever the facts lead. Every state except Alabama and California, the home of Silicon Valley, so far has signed onto the bipartisan effort, as have Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. TONY ROMM (TWP)

Rescuers pull 4th and final crewman alive from cargo ship Coast Guard rescuers pulled four trapped men alive from a capsized cargo ship Monday, drilling into the hull to extract the crew members more than a day after their vessel overturned while leaving a Georgia port. All four were reported as being alert and in relatively good condition and were taken to a hospital for further evaluation. The rescues followed nearly 36 hours of work after the Golden Ray, a giant ship that carries automobiles, rolled onto its side Sunday as it was leaving Brunswick, bound for Baltimore. ”All crew members are accounted for,” Coast Guard Southeast wrote on Twitter. Netanyahu shares claim of new Iranian nuclear site

Judge reinstates broad halt on Trump’s asylum policy

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday unveiled what he said was a previously undisclosed Iranian nuclear weapons site. Netanyahu claimed that experiments were conducted at the facility, located in the central Iranian town of Abadeh, but did not provide any evidence. In one satellite image he shared, parts of the building had been destroyed. Also Monday, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N. nuclear watchdog, confirmed that Iran is preparing to use more advanced centrifuges. Iran had already announced the step, which is a breach of limits set in the country’s unraveling nuclear deal. (AP)

A federal judge in California on Monday reinstated a nationwide halt on the Trump administration’s plan to prevent most migrants from seeking asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border. U.S. District Judge Jon Tigar ruled in Oakland that an injunction blocking the administration’s policy from taking effect should apply nationwide. In his ruling, Tigar stressed a “need to maintain uniform immigration policy.” President Trump called the ruling “unfair,” and a White House statement said that a sole judge shouldn’t have the ability to exert such a broad impact on immigration policy. CHANGING ROLE

Orpik takes new position with Capitals

JOHN McDONNELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

RB situation just got more complicated Guice could miss games with knee injury after Peterson held out as healthy scratch REDSKINS Redskins running back Derrius Guice was being evaluated Monday for a possible right knee injury, though it is unclear exactly how serious that ailment may be. Two people with knowledge of the situation said the injury could keep Guice out for multiple games, though coach Jay Gruden said the MRI that Guice had Monday was to look at “knee soreness” and suggested that the second-year pro might miss little, if any, time. When asked if there is a chance Guice could still play Sunday against the Cowboys, Gruden said: “For sure.” Guice’s potential absence would add another layer to the team’s complicated running back situation, which was in the spotlight after Sunday’s season-opening loss to the Eagles, during which Guice started and Adrian Peterson, the club’s leading rusher last season, was held out as a healthy scratch for the first time in his career.

The news of Guice’s injury seemed to surprise many in the organization, after he took several hits in Sunday’s game and then moved around the locker room afterward as if everything was fine. Guice went into the sideline medical tent briefly during the second quarter but later said he simply needed a place to urinate. Gruden said Monday that Guice was actually being looked at by doctors when he was in the tent and that the doctors had cleared him to play. He finished with 10 carries for 18 yards. The injured knee is not the one doctors surgically repaired in the summer of 2018 when Guice tore his ACL in his first preseason game, causing him to miss all of last season, but the fact he is hurt again is a big concern for an organization that desperately wants him to be its featured back. Though Peterson signed late last summer to replace Guice and several other injured running

Derrius Guice contends he went to the medical tent for a bathroom break Sunday, but coach Jay Gruden said he was having his knee examined.

Redskins injury updates Coach Jay Gruden said DL Jonathan Allen, who sprained his knee in Sunday’s game, is “day-to-day.” Gruden also said he was hopeful TE Jordan Reed would be cleared to play in Sunday’s home opener, more than three weeks after a concussion. Backup DL Caleb Brantley aggravated a lingering foot injury Sunday and is also day-to-day. (TWP)

backs, he quickly became the team’s top offensive player, rushing for 1,042 yards and seven TDs. Peterson, 34, signed a two-year deal with the Redskins this offseason and expected to split time with Guice. But last week, Gruden named Guice the team’s primary

running back and didn’t even dress Peterson on Sunday, saying it was more important to carry an extra special teams player than Peterson, whose potential carries could be handled by Guice. After Sunday’s game, Gruden went so far as to say he would play Peterson only if they have a game “where we run the ball 55 times a game in the I formation.” His criticism of Peterson seemed to upset some players, who respect the former league MVP. Right tackle Morgan Moses called the fact Peterson didn’t dress “a slap in the face.” Striking a more conciliatory tone Monday, Gruden said: “Adrian is well-liked in the locker room.” LES CARPENTER AND

Less than three months after he announced his NHL retirement, former Capitals defenseman Brooks Orpik has rejoined the organization. The team announced Monday that Orpik will work in player development, primarily with defenseman prospects, with the Capitals’ American Hockey League affiliate in Hershey, Pa. After a 12-year tenure in Pittsburgh that included a Stanley Cup, Orpik signed with Washington in 2014, wearing an “A” as an alternate captain for all five seasons with the Capitals. With his contract up after last season, Orpik announced his retirement at 38, calling it a “pretty easy decision” after a new injury forced him to play through immense pain for most of the season. Nats’ goal: Keep grip on wild card

NO MISSED BATHS

Next 9 games include series with Minnesota, Atlanta and St. Louis

DON’T WAIT! Cut out to use at your consultation.

TAMI CHAPPELL (AP)

ANALYSIS The Nationals began last week still pushing for a serious chance at the division title. Win or sweep their three-game series with the Mets and split with the Braves, and the Nats could have been as close as 3½ games out of first, with three matchups left with the division-leading Braves. But the week was a missed opportunity. The Nationals won once against the Braves and once against the Mets. Catcher Yan Gomes, though, pumped the brakes on the postseason implications of a 2-5 stretch. “I don’t think we need to get too far ahead of ourselves,” he said Sunday in Atlanta. “We came in here and wanted to gain ground on them. It didn’t happen. We have to move on.” Washington’s likeliest path to the postseason with 20 games left is the wild card. Five teams began Monday within seven games of the Nationals, who start this stretch atop the NL wild-card standings. The Cubs currently occupy the second wild-card position, three games behind Washington before their game Monday

night at San Diego. Next were the Diamondbacks, Brewers, Phillies and Mets. With the division title out of the picture, the Nats will be reframed as the leader, not the chaser, of this playoff race. They now must maintain their grip on the top wildcard spot with the second-hardest remaining schedule among playoff competitors, according to weighted opponent winning percentage (WOWP). The slate starts today: Three games at AL Central-leading Minnesota; three at home against Atlanta; and three at St. Louis. Then there’s an off day and a three-game set in Miami against the last-place Marlins before an eight-game homestand to end the season: five with the Phillies and three with the Indians.

NUTRITION ADVICE

Choosing your cheese

Don’t harsh their zen

Cheese has long gotten a bad rap because of its high saturated fat content, but the issue may be more complex. Here’s a rough ranking of cheese varieties, from least to most healthful.

Americans take yoga classes for a variety of reasons. For some, the priority is mindfulness or stress relief; for others, it’s maintaining flexibility. Many view yoga mostly as a workout. But whatever the goal, yoga students are choosing to pursue it in a quiet, tranquil, breath-focused atmosphere, with minimal distraction. Everyone attending a yoga class, then, should follow etiquette rules that help maintain an aura of calm, concentrated effort. Here are some most studios and teachers agree on. ELIZABETH CHANG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

JENNA BIRCH (FOR TWP)

3 Processed cheeses

Arrive early, especially if it’s your first class.

Leave your shoes and cell phone outside.

Bring water, a towel, and, if possible, your own mat.

Wear clothing appropriate for the class.

This allows time to find a space, unroll your mat and collect your props without disturbing anyone. It also gives you an opportunity to get into the right mindset. If you are late, wait until after the teacher’s opening ritual — it could be a reading, a breathing exercise, a meditation, a sequence of oms — before entering; otherwise you are interrupting the class while it is trying to get grounded.

Most studios have a shoe rack; use it. There are cultural, practical and spiritual reasons for this rule. Yoga is practiced on the floor, and tracking in dirt makes the studio unclean. And it’s simply easier to ground yourself if your feet are making direct contact with the floor. As for your phone, it should be silenced and put away so that you can fully disconnect and others won’t be disturbed.

Many gyms and studios recommend students bring water, though in traditional yoga it’s often avoided. Either way, it’s wise to be wellhydrated before class. A towel is useful for wiping sweat and can serve as a prop to keep your head level during savasana or as a clean layer over a communal yoga mat, though many people prefer to bring their own mats to yoga for hygienic reasons.

You want something comfortable that you can move in: think stretchy, breathable fabrics. Dress codes vary. In hot yoga classes, for example, it’s not unusual to see shirtless men and women in sports bras. In other classes, teachers might expect students to be more circumspect. Dressing in a way that won’t distract anyone or make them uncomfortable is a kindness to your fellow students.

Better avoided completely are the processed types, such as American cheese singles, Velveeta, spray can varieties or shredded cheeses in plastic bags.

2 Harder cheeses Varieties such as cheddar, Swiss and Parmesan tend to be good sources of vitamins and minerals such as calcium and vitamin A. They also have a modest amount of fat.

1

Tell the instructor about any issues or preferences.

Be compassionate to others, and focus on yourself.

Try to maintain a friendly, positive attitude .

Plan to stay for the entire duration of the class.

If you have a physical problem or injury such as a bad back or a frozen shoulder, or if you prefer not to receive any hands-on assists (this is when a teacher touches a student to improve their alignment or make them more comfortable), let the instructor know before class. After numerous accusations of sexual assault leveled against prominent gurus, yoga is moving toward a culture of consent.

During yoga, your focus should be inward. “The gaze is supposed to be soft; you’re really not supposed to be staring at anything or anyone,” says yoga therapist Carol Krukoff. “I like to encourage my students to pretend each mat is your own little yoga island, and all the other islands are friendly. They love you, you love them. It doesn’t matter what they’re doing; just be on your own little island and do your practice.”

“I think it’s important to keep the tenor of your interactions with other people in the studio as one that’s positive, so that it’s a place of positivity for people,” says Brandon Copeland, a yoga instructor and the owner of Khepera Wellness in D.C. “It can be a place where a lot of people are dealing with a lot of different emotions. Be aware of your presence and how you interact with other people.”

If you must leave early, let the teacher know, and do it before savasana, the period of final relaxation at the end of class. Again, this is to avoid disturbing your classmates during a key part of class — experts often say savasana is the most important and challenging pose in yoga. And, whether you’re coming or going, always try not to step on anyone else’s mat.

Shred415 offers free pop-up workout 6 p.m. Friday at Athleta Reston; bring mat, water

Fresh cheeses Your best bet is fresh cheese, such as goat cheese, feta, ricotta and cottage cheese. They have a healthy dose of protein, and tend to be lower in calories.

DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK

She keeps sharing our personal stuff Q. My partner (together since 1998) is not able to retain personal things that I’ve shared with her (including general things like finances, just about everything) and keep them to herself. She shares this information with people she’s only known for a little while (like colleagues at a new job). I find this to be very destructive to us, and she is nonresponsive to me when I tell her how to correct the behavior or keep her mouth shut. I find it to be really aggressive behavior on her part. It’s funny you use the word “aggressive,” because I was feeling super warm and simpatico with you until you started to sound like a drill sergeant. You won’t get far in convincing her of anything if you don’t at least attempt to adopt an empathetic tone. She’s prone to sharing these things for a reason: Do you have any idea what it is, and have you even asked? Is she trying to connect? Does

she have no filter? Is she an impulsive blurter-outer? Does she, deep down, not share your opinion about what should be kept private and why? Might your standards be too strict about what should be taboo with co-workers? You’ll need to do more listening than commanding as you better identify the problem. Only then can you work together toward a plan for you each to respect the other’s needs.

about a recent conversation where her father exploded with violence and threw furniture and hit her mother. She insists what he did “wasn’t so bad” and she “can handle it.” I’d be friends with her if she had a realistic view of her family’s behavior. Most people would just be “too busy” to get together, but that’s cowardly. Should I be honest and say, “Making excuses for your father’s behavior is a deal-breaker for me”? I agree that she deserves the truth. Ghosting people is rarely justifiable from a do-untoothers standpoint, and being honest could plant the seed that she and her mother are in an objectively dangerous situation that shouldn’t be condoned by anyone. So, use your discomfort to help her. There are no magic words, but try to make it less about whether her behavior measures up to some yardstick (so I’d ditch the “dealbreaker” part, which — though it makes sense — could put her on the defensive about not being ‘good enough’ to earn your companionship). Instead, focus on your concern about the situation. “I understand your stance about your family, and how hard the situation must be. But the fact that you are accepting the status quo makes me worried for you, and honestly, I would take on so much stress about the situation that I don’t think I can be the kind of friend that you would want.”

Yes, they can go home again HGTV’s ‘A Very Brady Renovation’ is a curious exercise in nostalgia

‘Fly Already’ boldly soars into darkness

HGTV

TV REVIEW Unlike others in their boomer and Generation X cohort — who every day wage the epic family battle of what to do with Mom and Dad’s old house, while splitlevel suburban ramblers are sold as teardowns — the original actors who played the six stepsiblings on the ultimate ’70s sitcom “The Brady Bunch” have returned to TV to perform this emotional ritual in reverse. On the irresistibly nostalgic four-episode miniseries “A Very Brady Renovation,” which premiered Monday on HGTV, the Brady kids reunite to assist some of the network’s stars with a massive, six-month remodeling of the famed Brady house on Dilling Street in North Hollywood. To put it back precisely as the audience perceived it. The original “Brady Bunch” ran for five seasons. Those kid actors are now in their late 50s to mid-60s. Without having to explicitly say so, “A Very Brady Renovation” works as a curious form of closure, which is slightly more interesting than its more obvious acts of groovy restoration. Cheerful and inviting as the show might be, its mission is to put everything back the way it was, the way Mom and Dad had it — a final attempt to see if we can Make Brady America Great Again, down to finding the right rig

In the new miniseries “A Very Brady Renovation,” a collection of “Brady Bunch” cast members and HGTV stars unite to renovate the famed Brady house in North Hollywood to reflect how the home looked in the ‘70s sitcom.

pattern for the tastefully garish living room sofa, or using 3-D printing technology to restore the horse statuette that sits on a credenza. To bring up the fact that none of it was ever real — that “A Very Brady Renovation” is indeed a costly and pointless attempt to put a layer of new fake on top of the old fake — is to look for logic where it need not exist. As the house comes together, the Brady cast’s faces reflect an almost profound wonder at the passage of time. The show is covertly speaking to us about mortality. It tells us something about the surprising degree to

which the past can be retrieved, to say nothing of the lengths that 21st-century TV producers will go to retrieve it. A grand plan emerges to make the inside of the house conform precisely to “The Brady Bunch” stage interiors — including the Jack-and-Jill bathroom shared by the six kids and the attic that Greg Brady (Barry Williams) claimed for his own, to the resentment of his stepsister Marcia (Maureen McCormick). Shepherded by HGTV’s favorite camera hogs, “The Property Brothers” (Jonathan and Drew Scott), and with help from the stars of “Restored by the Fords,”

“Hidden Potential,” “Flea Market Flip” and “Good Bones,” the project involves turning the one-story house into a two-story house and add some 2,000 square feet of new living space. Over the years, many of these “Brady Bunch” stars worked hard to get beyond Bradyness. Others used it for what it was. While “A Very Brady Renovation” succeeds as a metaphorical exercise in the ersatz, the real fascination lies in that other story, about six people who spent their lives being Brady and Not Brady, and the preservation of one’s truest self. HANK STUEVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

“I think we’ve watched the guys do it for the last 40 years. Get out of the way, guys, and put a woman up there.” PIERCE BROSNAN, telling The Hollywood Reporter that he thinks the next James Bond actor should be a woman.

“I think it would be exhilarating,” added Brosnan, who played Bond in four movies from 1995 to 2002.

BOOK REVIEW Mastering the short story is no easy feat. An engaging one shines with the lyricism of poetry and the deliberate action of a play shuttling from scene to scene. Every line is critical. Israeli author Etgar Keret doesn’t just produce memorable short stories but short, short stories. Some are no longer than 500 words, and five or six pages is typical. As he’s done in past collections, “Fly Already,” which came out last week, applies magical realism to the angst that claws at the insides of his characters. But this collection features some of the darkest imagery that Keret, who won Israel’s prestigious Sapir Prize for this book, has brought to print to date. In one story, an old man positions a compressed block of metal — once the car his father drove when he fatally crashed — in his living room. A rich lonely man “buys” the birthdays of strangers in order to feel loved and appreciated. The last story, “The Evolution of a Breakup,” is a beautiful dissection of a culture lost in the whirlwind of heady expectations. A thread running through most of the stories is loss. Divorced fathers struggle to appease their children, love fades from relationships. Some stories end with a sharp sting, and others with a more elliptical brushstroke resembling a fade into the sunset. DAVID SILVERBERG (TWP)

“For as young as she is her hearing doesn’t seem to be the best.” @ROBERT__33, criticizing Sen. Kamala

Harris’ apology for laughing after a supporter called President Trump’s actions “mentally retarded.” Harris, 54, tweeted Saturday that she “didn’t hear the words the man used.” Harris has used that excuse before: In June, she said she misheard a question at the Democratic debate.

“Currently reading the 4 positive reviews of ‘The Goldfinch’ and ignoring the rest.” @STRANGERJOYCES, reacting to the film’s overwhelmingly negative reviews from the Toronto International Film Festival. IndieWire’s David Ehrlich declared “The Goldfinch” — based on Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel — “lifeless” and a “gauzy, bloated slab of Oscar bait.” Despite numerous poor reviews, many critics praised the film’s cinematography.

“We are big Kentucky fans but will be wearing this Tennessee shirt with pride.” @JMCHRISTOPHER71, praising the

University of Tennessee for supporting a bullied fan. Last week, Florida teacher Laura Snyder said a student was mocked for wearing an orange T-shirt with a handdrawn “U.T.” for the elementary school’s college colors day. Snyder’s Facebook post got Tennessee’s attention, and it made the kid’s design into an official T-shirt.

@GABETHEWP, joking about the Jets’ 17-16 loss to the Bills in Sunday’s season opener. New York fans were especially upset that rookie kicker Kaare Vedvik missed an extra point try and a 45-yard field goal attempt. As a result, the Jets fans urged the team to replace Vedvik with soccer star Carli Lloyd, above, who recently made a 55-yard field goal at an Eagles practice.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You will have to face certain dangers today, but nothing you’re unprepared for — and nothing that should last long. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) The good and the bad are liberally mixed throughout the day, but you should be able to focus on the good to the exclusion of almost all else. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You may be asking for trouble if you continue along your current course today. Two friends know what lies in store. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) It might be time for you to reach out to someone who has been “on the outs” for quite some time. There are a few fences to mend today. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You understand what is going on, but you’re not quite ready to do something about it. Be sure to take time to explore all of your options.

may find yourself moving back and forth over the same ground today without resolving anything. You get an important message, however.

TODAY: Increasing sunshine and a little warmer. Highs should climb into the low 80s, and there’s a touch of mugginess in the air (dew points in the mid-60s). Winds are light and variable. Partly cloudy and mild as lows fall back only into the mid- to upper 60s. July-like weather returns Wednesday and Thursday.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) If you’re not going to follow the rules, then you’d better play a different game altogether — one that allows you greater personal freedom.
