A $40,000 toilet custom-built for a Thai princess visiting Cambodia went unused during her brief stay, the BBC reported. The toilet, housed in an air-conditioned hut, was built for Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn ahead of her visit to Yeak Lom Lake, in northeast Cambodia, on Monday. While the princess didn’t use the toilet, she reportedly did take pictures of it. The commode has been removed and the hut will be used for a tourist office. (EXPRESS)

A Washington state woman who bit down on something unexpected in her linguine and clams while dining out with her husband isn’t about to complain. What Lindsay Hasz of Issaquah chomped on turned out to be a rare, gem-quality quahog pearl worth about $600. Sick girl makes a robo-pitch MARYLAND Peyton Walton went to see the governor of Maryland recently and brought along her 4-foot robot, known as PAVS — Peyton’s Awesome Virtual Self.

The 10-year-old, who is battling cancer, uses the rolling robot to connect with her Poolesville school when she can’t be there.

Her family wants other children with illnesses to have the same chance at the latest technology. So they made a pitch to Gov. Larry Hogan, who also is a cancer survivor.

They say they were encouraged by Hogan’s interest and that the governor and the fifthgrader hit it off. “The two of them just got each other,� said Lynn Schaeber, Peyton’s mother, recalling that her daughter and the state’s top elected leader compared notes about their hair beginning to return after chemotherapy.

The idea was front and center Friday as assistant superintendents from across Maryland gathered for a monthly meeting that included a panel of speakers describing children’s experiences. Officials from two companies — Double Robotics and Cisco Systems — made presentations, as did Schaeber.

Peyton used her robot — which resembles a small Segway with a rolling base and an iPad at the top — to remotely attend classes last fall at Poolesville Elementary while she received radiation therapy in New York City.

By connecting from afar, she could join in student discussions, talk to teachers, see friends and navigate her classroom.

Schaeber is hoping to help make robots and other technology available to homebound children facing medical crises in every Maryland county. She said she knows of just one other Maryland child using a robot: a sixth-grader at Monsignor Slade Catholic School in Glen Burnie.

Kelly Kolenda said her family heard about Peyton’s robot and within a week had one for her daughter Emily, a sixth-grader who has battled a neurological autoimmune disorder since 2012 and is in and out of the hospital. “When a child has missed this much time in school, just being there and getting to see her friends and her teacher and her classroom is the most important thing,� Kolenda said. “It connects her to the life she’s been away from for so long.� DONNA ST. Wallace wouldn’t say whether the results were a surprise. But he did say the formula doesn’t take into account the tale of woe that Metro has been dealing with in the past few years and instead focused just on the data. And the data doesn’t lie, especially on some key criteria.

“The metrics that D.C. really rated well for [were] average commute time in minutes and the percentage difference in commute time between public transportation users and drivers,” Wallace said. “On those metrics it beat almost every other city in the country.”

According to the study, “The typical transit commuter in D.C. spends 36 minutes traveling to work each day. That is 10 minutes below the average for the 136 cities in SmartAsset’s study.”

One drawback SmartAsset saw with D.C.’s public transportation system was the cost.

The firm considered five metrics in particular in the ranking: The average commute time for transit users and the percentage difference between average commute times of car commuters and transit users were used to measure the system’s efficiency.

The percentage of commuters who use public transit and the total number of commuters who use public transit were used to measure the availability of transit. And the difference between the citywide median income and the median income of transit users measured the quality of the system. The firm said, “A smaller income gap reflects a

In an interview, Nick Wallace, SmartAsset’s data editor, said this is the first time the firm has done this study, and it plans to do it again in the future.

Foxx on Metro safety: This really can’t wait TRANSPORTATION The top U.S. transportation official on Wednesday said he will not allow efforts to create a new safety agency to oversee Metro lag, repeating his threat to withhold millions in funding from D.C., Maryland and Virginia if they don’t act soon.

“This is one that really can’t wait,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said. “You would think that if you have thousands of people traveling on this system every day, from all these jurisdictions, that safety would be something that nobody would let fall off the table. And yet it has.”

Earlier this month, federal officials learned that the jurisdictions don’t expect to pursue legislation this year to establish a new safety oversight body for Metro. Foxx told them that was unacceptable and has given them a year to create the panel or risk losing millions in federal transportation funding.

At a meeting with reporters Wednesday, Foxx underscored the need for the jurisdictions to accelerate their efforts.

“I don’t agree with the premise that we can’t make progress this year,” he said. “We fully expect the governors and the mayor and their legislatures to figure out a path forward.”

The topic is expected to be on the agenda today, when D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan and Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe are scheduled to meet in Annapolis.

Wait … Metro’s No. 1?

TRANSPORTATION Here’s what’s so great about D.C.’s Metro system: You can have a trendline of declining ridership; you can have a safety record that’s so scary the Feds have to step in; you can be so down on your luck that it takes a year to hire a new general manager to run the thing; you can even have a series of high-profile crimes, including Tuesday’s midday shooting on the Green Line — and yet still rank as the No. 1 transit system in the U.S. Who knew?

Metro begins major project to improve radio, cell phone coverage

Amplify community is expanding

Metro has begun a massive capital improvement project to install special radio cable along 100 miles of tunnel walls, allowing cell phone service between underground stations and better radio communication for Metro workers and emergency responders.

Amplify is the newest way that Metro is engaging customers by bringing together riders, transit advocates and experts in an ongoing digital forum. Metro has just expanded participation in the Amplify community to enable participation from beyond the transit zone. Residents in the following counties are encouraged to register today:

Thanks to a new agreement with the major wireless carriers, the project will be advanced using Metro-managed workers which will yield cost and efficiency benefits.

As each segment of tunnel is wired, Metro will notify the wireless carriers of the completed segments.

An outside expert was engaged this week to review Metro’s design and implementation plan to maximize the delivery of benefits and to accelerate the project schedule. To date, all 91 Metrorail stations, including 47 underground stations have been equipped with cell phone service.

Va. mulls bill to withhold names of all law officers Civil rights groups call the legislation an attack on transparency

VIRGINIA It started with a reporter’s attempt to learn whether problem police officers were moving from department to department. It resulted in legislation that is again bringing national scrutiny to the Virginia General Assembly: a bill that could keep secret all Virginia police officers’ names.

In a climate in which the actions of police nationwide are under scrutiny as never before, supporters say a law is needed to keep officers safe from those who may harass or harm them.

But the effort has drawn the

attention of civil rights groups and others who say police should be moving toward more transparency — not less — to ensure that troubled officers are found and removed.

If it ultimately is made law, experts say the restriction would be unprecedented nationwide.

The Virginia Senate has already approved Senate Bill 552, which would classify the names of all police officers and fire marshals as “personnel records,” and exempt them from mandatory disclosure under the state’s freedom of information law. The Republican-dominated Virginia House will consider the bill in hearings starting today.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat, has not yet taken a position

on the bill, his spokesman said.

State Sen. John Cosgrov, RChesapeake, said he knew many police officers and their families, and “the culture is not one of respect for law enforcement anymore. … Police officers are much more in jeopardy. There’s no nefarious intent behind the bill.”

Pushback has been strong. “To say every officer’s name ought to be confidential,” said Virginia ACLU executive director Claire Gastanaga, “is just a step too far in government secrecy. Apple, and users, could add to iPhone security TECHNOLOGY Suppose the FBI wins its court battle and forces Apple to help unlock an iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino killers.

That could open up all iPhones to potential government scrutiny.

Turns out there’s a fair bit both individuals and Apple could do to FBI-proof their phones and shield private information from investigators and cybercriminals alike. Those measures include multiple pass codes and longer, more complex ones.

Of course, increased security typically comes at the expense

of convenience. Most efforts to improve phone security would make the devices harder to use, perhaps by requiring you to remember more passwords.

In the current fight, the FBI aims to make Apple help it guess the pass code on the work phone used by Syed Farook before he and his wife killed 14 people at an office party in December.

The FBI wants Apple to create special software to disable security features that render the iPhone unreadable after 10 incorrect guesses. Apple has resisted, maintaining that software that

POLITICS Sheila Covert is worried about Donald Trump.

A loyal Republican voter from swing state Virginia, Covert calls the businessman “bombastic” and says there’s “just no substance” in his boastful campaign rhetoric.

But if Trump does become the GOP presidential nominee?

“Well, I’d definitely vote for him,” said Covert, an 81-yearold from the Richmond suburb of Powhatan. After a pause, she added, “But I hope and pray it doesn’t come to that.”

Covert is part of a legion of skeptical Republican voters across the United States coming to grips with the prospect that Trump may end up being their party’s best chance for retaking the White House. He has scored three commanding primary wins in a row, including Tuesday in Nevada, and enters next week’s delegate-rich Super Tuesday elections in strong position.

Interviews with about two dozen frequent Republican voters in Virginia — an important general election battleground and one of several states with a primary next week — reveal the complex mix of emotions Trump evokes within his own party.

Among those who don’t plan to vote for Trump in the primary, there’s shock, confusion and anxiety over his candidacy.

But there’s also a grudging acceptance of his political staying power and a feeling that despite his many flaws, he’d be better than another four years with a Democrat in the White House — particularly if that Democrat is Hillary Clinton.

Democratic officials are betting that Trump’s over-the-top rhetoric would turn off independents and some Republicans in battleground states like Virginia.

Some anxious GOP leaders share that concern, contributing to the sudden rush of party officials rallying around Florida Sen. Marco Rubio as an alternative.

Bill Ginther, a 69-year-old retiree from Midlothian who plans to vote for Rubio in Tuesday’s primary, says he’s “honestly shocked” that Trump has come as far as he has.

Former New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg is contemplating a thirdparty bid for the White House, but first he would need to sell himself to a public that is largely unaware of him. A Quinnipiac poll this month found that 56 percent of American voters had not heard of Bloomberg, the owner of the media company that bears his name. And a new poll this week from The Associated Press showed that a majority of voters of both parties would not even consider voting for him.

“This is the first time in my 68 years that I have truly been scared of what is going to happen in this election,” Bradner said.

A recent AP-GfK poll, however, suggests far more Republicans than not say they’d vote for Trump in the general election, and 86 percent of GOP voters think he can win in November — giving him a 15 percentage point advantage over anyone else.

For Cumberland County resident Tina Shumaker, 66, the prospect of voting for Trump is deeply unappealing. But her concerns about him pale in comparison to her dislike of Clinton.

“If it would have to come between him and Hillary, I’m afraid he’d get my vote,” Shumaker said. “I hope it doesn’t turn out that way. But it’s beginning to look that way.” JULIE PACE (AP)

Only in America would calling someone “low energy” — the way Donald Trump branded Jeb Bush last fall — do so much damage to a political campaign.

Bush’s campaign, which ended on Saturday, faced a number of obstacles. One was Trump’s insult. While the charge of being “low energy” initially might have seemed silly, it clung to Bush, highlighting the disconnect between his slightly stiff, oldschool demeanor and the intense anger of the Republican base.

In the U.S., candidates are penalized for not having big enough smiles and rousing commentary. The U.S. has become “a nation of extroverts” that rewards enthusiasm, friendliness and charm, as Susan Cain, the author of a book about introversion, writes.

But not every country thinks the same way. A new study by researchers at Stanford and other universities suggests that Western cultures value excitement and enthusiasm more than some Eastern ones, and that these values carry over into the behavior of political leaders in those countries.

The researchers say it’s not clear whether politicians make a conscious decision to take on an enthusiastic demeanor. But the study suggests that leaders do present themselves in a way that syncs with their culture’s values — or, like Jeb Bush, they suffer the consequences. ANA SWANSON

Their thumbs-up acknowledges that they have seen it, but that they couldn’t really be bothered to work up much of an emotional reaction.

Likers are cool, distant, dispossessed.

Love Deploy the heart when you really like something — this is the “like,” but with feeling. In instances of tragedy, the “love” button will also double as a signal of empathy and support. But in general, expect this to be the high-pitched “omg, love it” of reaction emoji.

Wow Applicable to fake news articles and overshare-y personal rants, the wow will become Facebook’s much-needed wordless expression of muted disdain and skepticism. This is “wow” in the “… are you serious?” sense, signaling your disapproval for something.

Haha Use this reaction when something has made you laugh, whether out loud or in your head. But the “haha” occupies a difficult space: Many of the things you find funny also provoke amazement (wow) and appreciation (love). Keep your audience in mind for this.

Sad It’s difficult to imagine too many scenarios where the “sad” will be needed. You could try it on those personal announcements — deaths, divorces — that have seemed historically inappropriate to “like.”

But the heart goes a lot further in telling someone you care.

Angry The angry face is ideal for expressing righteous solidarity — as in, “I am EQUALLY outraged by this ridiculous news article/political gaffe.” Use it when you agree with the poster, not when you yourself are angered by what he/she posted, or you’ll come off as passive-aggressive.

Putin plays mediator in Syrian war MOSCOW Russian President Vladimir Putin worked Wednesday to place himself in the center of efforts to secure a Syrian cease-fire, speaking by phone to the leaders of Syria, Saudi Arabia and Iran and drawing promises of cooperation, according to the Kremlin.

In a rapid-fire series of conversations, Putin bridged both sides of the conflict — Iran and Russia back Syrian President Bashar Assad and Saudi Arabia sides with the rebels — and portrayed himself as bolstering the chances of a ceasefire, scheduled to take effect at midnight Friday. Leading Syrian opposition groups have not yet committed to the deal.

Assad “confirmed the government’s readiness to facilitate the cease-fire’s implementation,” the Kremlin said.

Putin seized on the ceasefire deal as a diplomatic victory for Russia and one that places Russia on the same bargaining level as the U.S. Putin spoke to Saudi Arabia’s King Salman. The Kremlin said Salman welcomed the agreement and expressed his readiness to work together with Russia to implement the plan. Putin also spoke to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, the Kremlin said.

Gruden has optimism Coach expects Cousins and top WRs to return; no desperation in draft REDSKINS Though he’s not intimately involved in contract talks and salary-cap machinations, Redskins coach Jay Gruden said Wednesday that he feels “pretty good” about keeping quarterback Kirk Cousins in the fold.

Whether that’s with a franchise tag or through a long-term contract, Gruden added that he’s confident that the more Cousins plays, the better he’s going to get.

Gruden, speaking at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, also made clear that he fully expects both featured wide receivers, DeSean Jackson and

Pierre Garcon, to return despite a combined salary cap hit of roughly $16 million.

Gruden brushed off a suggestion that the return of running back Alfred Morris was “a long shot,” but was noncommittal about the likelihood of striking a deal with Morris, who soon will be a free agent.

“There’s not one negative thing I can say about Alfred Morris, as a player or a man,” Gruden said.

“We wish him well if we don’t get [a contract] done.”

The Redskins also have running back Matt Jones, a rookie last season.

On the defensive side, the coach acknowledged that upgrading and adding depth to the line will be a priority heading into the draft April 28-30.

Pressure on Matt Jones Although the Redskins drafted Florida’s Matt Jones in the third round last year with every expectation he would be a “lead dog” at running back, coach Jay Gruden said Wednesday that Jones must work on ball security and durability before he’s ready to fill that role. Jones played in 13 of 17 games and fumbled five times. (TWP)

The defense gave up 4.83 yards per rush last season. Only one of 32 NFL teams was worse.

But the Redskins, who pick 21st overall, will take the best player available regardless of position, the coach said, because the club isn’t in “panic mode” over any position.

Gruden also said that defensive end Jason Hatcher, 33, is having second thoughts about retiring, now that he has had a chance to recover from the pounding of the season.

The pass rush generated by Redskins ends and outside linebackers wasn’t nearly good enough in 2015, exposed grievously in the first-round playoff loss by Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who romped against the unit by switching to hurry-up mode after the first quarter.

Part of the solution may lie in Junior Galette. Gruden said he was optimistic about re-signing the outside linebacker, who has yet to play a down for the team after tearing an Achilles tendon before the 2015 season opener.

Finding his basketball niche After bouncing around for years, Temple earns stable role with Wizards

WIZARDS After years of bouncing around the NBA, D-League and overseas, Garrett Temple will always remember the day his basketball life took a turn for the better.

It was Dec. 23, 2012. Temple got a call from Tommy Sheppard, the Wizards’ senior vice president of basketball operations, “and that changed everything,” Temple recalled.

When the Wizards signed him two days later, the move wasn’t seen as anything more than adding a healthy body. But in the last three-plus years, Temple has proven his worth time and again.

“Temp is one of the best teammates you can ever have because he is always working hard,” guard John Wall said. “Always one of the first and last guys here and never makes excuses if he is not playing, but when his number is called, he is ready and he is going to give you 110 percent.”

This year, Temple’s value increased when shooting guard Bradley Beal was hurt, giving the undrafted player out of LSU his first extended time in the starting lineup.

Wizards guard Garrett Temple is having his best season. Bradley Beal’s injury has made Temple a frequent starter.

“I’m just trying to show people that I can be a real productive player in this league, hopefully for years to come,” said Temple, 29.

Entering Wednesday’s game at Chicago, he was averaging career highs of 7.8 points and 2.6 rebounds in 53 games and 33 starts.

Temple is expected to be a free agent after the season. He said that even if the Wizards don’t re-sign him, he is thankful that his peripatetic journey made an extended stop here.

MUSIC In 2010, blues rocker Susan Tedeschi’s “Back to the River” was up for a Grammy for best contemporary blues album. Tedeschi lost, but the trophy still came home with her: Guitarist Derek Trucks, her husband, won the award for his eponymous band’s “Already Free.”

Three months later, the couple played their first show together with a new joint project dubbed Tedeschi Trucks Band.

“Derek was at a point in his life where he just wanted to focus on one band,” Tedeschi says of her husband, who was simultaneously juggling the Derek Trucks Band with his role as a guitarist in the Allman Brothers Band.

The decision to put both their solo groups on hiatus and start with a clean slate was difficult, but it made sense professionally and personally. Since their marriage in 2001, the couple (who have two kids) had spent much of their time

on the road — often apart.

“Now I see him every day,” she says. “When we do separate, it’s kind of nice. We miss each other.”

Though the couple had united for a couple of brief tours as Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi’s Soul Stew Revival in 2007 and 2008, it wasn’t until Tedeschi Trucks Band that they focused on making music together. (After the Allman Brothers dissolved in 2014, Trucks finally got to concentrate solely on Tedeschi Trucks Band.)

As a live act, the 12-person group, which features horns, two drummers and a handful of players from Tedeschi’s and

Trucks’ solo bands, is a powerful force that can play blues, jazz, rock and more — driven in equal parts by his virtuosic leads and her soulful vocals.

Last month, Tedeschi Trucks Band released its third album, “Let Me Get By,” arguably the group’s most cohesive and focused work yet. Produced by Trucks, the record is a true collaborative effort, with every member of the band contributing to the songwriting and some of the songs evolving out of improvised soundcheck and studio jams.

“It was definitely set up to sound like a record,” Tedeschi says, “but

with more of what you’re going to get live. Derek really wanted people to be able to get a feel for what the band is like live.”

Tedeschi and Trucks’ musical union has proven to be as strong as their marriage. In 2012 the two were nominated for best blues album at the Grammys, but this time they didn’t have to compete.

For a break from the norm, try one of these out-ofthe-ordinary takes on everyone’s favorite indulgence, all loaded with ingredients that elevate them from bar snack to full meal. This brunchtime dish starts with a pile of house-cut fries soaked in house-made buttermilk ranch dressing. “Don’t think Hidden Valley Ranch,” says assistant general manager Christopher Ferrufino. “It’s a little thinner and pink because we add paprika for smokiness.”

The fries are topped with chunks of 28-dayaged, grass-fed burger meat and applewood smoked bacon. (Still with us, or have you passed out?) To that, Mintwood adds a blend of melted Gruyere, Parmesan and cheddar cheese. For garnish, you’ll find a sunny-side-up egg and blistered shishito peppers.

Anyone who’s ever stepped foot in a diner has likely heard of disco fries. But it’s unlikely you’ve ever seen them this fancy. The handcut french fries are topped with chunks of cheddar cheese, a house-made gravy and pork sausage blended with sage, ginger, garlic and black pepper. “It elevates itself by the amount of work that goes into the dish,” says general manager Sarah Jane Curran. “We’re not intentionally making a fancier version — we’re just making something to the best of our ability.” It certainly beats the frozen-frenchfries-and-slice-of-American-cheese variety.

Being an old school-inspired Jewish deli, it’s only fitting that DGS aims to put pastrami on as many things as possible.

The Reuben fries are no exception. The dish starts with hand-cut potatoes that are deepfried until golden brown, and then topped with fatty hunks of pastrami that has been smoked in-house. To that, DGS adds housemade sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, Russian dressing and Fresno chilies. The only thing missing is the rye bread, which we’re thinking you won’t care too much about when you’re done licking the plate.

What better dish to serve alongside juicy, meaty burgers than crisp french fries? Much like it does with its patties, Slash Run offers a number of toppings for its waffle french fries.

For something simple (yet stinky), try the garlic and rosemary variety. If you’re looking for more of a meal, we suggest the loaded nacho fries topped with melted cheese, pico de gallo and sour cream. The shape of the fries makes for a generous distribution of cheese, and, as with any good plate of nachos, the toppings are added in layers for a packed bite every time you go in for more.

Don’t let the location of this somewhat shady grab-and-go corner restaurant scare you away. Lurking within this gas station haunt you’ll find a bevy of deep-fried, golden brown eats made for late-night noshing.

One of the most popular menu items is the chili cheese fries. The dish comes with all the standard toppings: melted cheese, chili, chopped scallions and a dollop of sour cream. Feeling noncommittal? Fast Gourmet offers a smaller, side-size portion of the fries for just $3. Pair the fries with the chivito sandwich for a filling meal.

This Park View restaurant comes from the same owner behind Sundevich, a beloved international sandwich shop tucked away in a Shaw alley. Much like the menu at Sundevich, Small Fry features dishes inspired by countries around the world — with an emphasis on street foods. The Patriot Poutine is modeled after a ubiquitous dish in Montreal. There are slight variations, however: Small Fry uses American string cheese in place of cheese curds, and its gravy is runnier than the more traditional, rouxbased alternative.

The songbook of his life MUSIC Guitarist Luther Dickinson had always dreamed of having his own songbook, a timeless collection of his work, transcribed as lyrics and sheet music.

“I was mainly self-taught in the early years,” the 43-year-old says. “I learned a lot from the library. I studied the music books, my grandmother’s hymnals. I love songbooks. I collect them.”

Dickinson, who co-founded the hill country blues band North Mississippi Allstars with his brother, Cody, in 1996, finally made the dream a reality with his new double LP, “Blues & Ballads (A Folksinger’s Songbook) Volumes I & II.” The album culls 21 songs Dickinson wrote (or cowrote) throughout his career, rerecorded live and in-studio, often in one take. The CD comes with his handwritten lyrics; the vinyl comes with the illustrated songbook featuring the words and sheet music for all 21 songs.

For Luther Dickinson’s tour supporting “Blues & Ballads,” which stops at the Hamilton on Tuesday, the guitarist will perform songs from the stripped-down collection both solo and with his band, but don’t expect them to sound exactly like they do on the record — he’ll still be plugging in an electric guitar. “My whole electric sound is based on being a loud-ass acoustic guitarist, so I feel more comfortable playing electric,” he says. Luther Dickinson fulfills a lifelong dream with his ‘Blues & Ballads’ LP

“Rock ’n Roll Blues,” while also working on a record with his gospel supergroup The Word and a North Mississippi Allstars album with New Orleans singersongwriter Anders Osborne.

For “Blues & Ballads,” Dickinson and his core solo band, The Cooperators (Amy LaVere on bass and Sharde Thomas on drums, fife and more), traveled to such famed studios as Sun and Royal in Memphis and laid down almost-acoustic takes of some of his best songs. (Friends like Mavis Staples, Jason Isbell and J.J. Grey added vocals and instrumentation to a handful of songs.)

Inspired by Alan Lomax, an archivist who traveled the world

making field recordings of folk artists, Dickinson captured each song live, with minimal overdubs, giving the collection a loose, front-porch vibe.

“I wanted it to be very casual, like the field recording of someone who almost doesn’t know they’re being recorded,” he says.

In revisiting his catalog, which includes North Mississippi Allstars songs like “Hurry Up Sunrise” and “Ain’t No Grave” (a tribute to his late father, musician and producer Jim Dickinson), the guitarist ended up bringing his songs back to their roots.

“My solo career is largely acoustic and so to me [these are] the definitive acoustic versions, because that’s how I wrote all the songs in the first place,” he says.

As the “Volumes I & II” in the album’s title implies, Dickinson has plans for more, but it won’t necessarily be albums.

“It’s not that I wanna make the records, it’s that I wanna continue making the songbook,” Dickinson says. “The way I see it, Volume III could be the ‘Rock ’n Roll Blues’ record. “Reaching the High Notes” is one of a few dozen shows taking place over the next two weekends as part of the sixth annual Atlas Intersections Festival, which starts Friday and runs through March 6 at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. The festival celebrates artistic collaborations between musicians, storytellers

and performers of all types.

Zip Zap Circus has been about collaboration from the start.

Founded in post-apartheid South Africa, the Zip Zap School of Circus Arts for Social Change began as a circus school for at-risk kids, seeking to give them a community where all races and backgrounds are welcome and they can work together on a project larger than themselves. Deull, who was living in Cape Town, loved the idea and helped to create a sister organization in the United States. Run by volunteers, Zip Zap Circus USA has been teaching the circus arts to at-risk kids since 2006.

This is Zip Zap’s sixth straight year at the festival, and the familyfriendly performances of “Reaching the High Notes” (Fri., 8 p.m. & Sat., 5 p.m., $25) will serve as a benefit for Zip Zap USA. Although Zip Zap students will not perform

in the show, it will feature performers from the D.C.-Baltimore area and Trapeze School New York, as well as Deull’s daughter Sara, who “caught the circus bug” as a child in South Africa and now works as a professional circus performer in Montreal, her father says. In addition, a trio of musicians will perform jazz and Celtic music. (As for that violinist in the air, you’ll have to go to the show to see what happens.)

“Intersections between communities that are different is a way to find powerful common ground,” Deull says. “Together, they can create things that neither could create on their own.”

Michael Flatley is on his farewell tour with ‘Lord of the Dance,’ and it hurts so good STAGE Michael Flatley is in pain.

“People don’t realize how brutal it actually is,” says the Irish step dancer who clatter-tapped his way to international fame in “Lord of the Dance.” “I know a lot of professional athletes, and we trade horror stories about the legs and the feet and the backs and the necks. And I think I got the worst of it!”

Relief may be in sight. “Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games,” the latest version of the show, is Flatley’s farewell tour — he’ll turn in his taps after a performance in Las Vegas on St. Patrick’s Day (of course). After his show in Fairfax on Friday, he’ll be just 12 performances away from kicking up his heels.

Flatley, 57, has been developing and performing in various iterations of “Lord of the Dance” since the first version premiered

20 years ago. In that time, the show has benefited hugely from technological advantages.

“We have new lighting and sound that’s been specially invented for us; we have 3-D screens and holograms,” he says (at one point in “Dangerous Games,” Flatley dances with two holo-Flatleys). Still, he says, it’s paramount that this newest version hark back to the first one.

“If you see Led Zeppelin, you want to hear ‘Stairway to Heaven,’ ” he says. “People want to see the hit numbers — that’s really important. But they want those in new and exciting ways.”

When talking to Flatley, it’s clear that he’s not particularly interested in discussing his extensive career and worldwide fame.

Bring up his cohorts, though, and his enthusiasm ramps up.

“That’s our proudest achievement, the people,” he says. “Not

just the dancers — the accountants, the lawyers, the truck drivers. There’s no end to the relationships. I’ve had the same wardrobe girls every night for 20 years!

These are relationships that are forged over a lifetime; if I’m proud of anything, I’m proud of that.

These young dancers, taking them from what was a folk dance to the world stage — that’s something.”

Flatley admits that, while it’s been a successful time, it hasn’t been an easy one. “It’s not like any other art form,” he says. “We have to paint our picture every night — live — and it has to be as close to perfect as we can, every night — live. It’s been a long road.”

Which leads to the inevitable question: Was it worth it?

“Oh, yeah. A hundred times over,” Flatley says. “People have asked me, ‘Aren’t you sad, now that you did it? You won’t be able to walk!’ But every time I feel the

After a death, a new life BOOKS Public-radio host Diane Rehm, 79, began writing her new book, “On My Own,” on the last night of her husband’s life. The candid memoir tracks Rehm’s first year of widowhood, starting when her husband, John, decided he was done fighting Parkinson’s disease, which had rendered him nearly immobile. It describes the 10 excruciating days when John starved himself to death (a path he chose, Rehm says, because assisted suicide is illegal in her home state of Maryland).

“On My Own” traces her uncertain steps without John — taking care of finances, taking over his side of the bed — and features reminiscences of their 54-year marriage. Rehm, who is ending her long-running WAMU program “The Diane Rehm Show” after the November election, will talk at Sixth and I on Wednesday.

You wrote that you and your husband were “more together in sickness than in health.” Can you expand on that?

It’s a lovely thought to expand on, because while he was in assisted living, I think he realized how dependent he had become on me, and I think that broke down some of the barriers he had used

all his life to shield himself, to be such a private human being. He knew I would do anything for him, and I think we simply had a loving time with each other in those last few months.

What do you hope people get out of reading “On My Own”?

I hope that people will talk with their families and their loved ones about what it is they want at the end of their life. John and I talked a lot about it with our kids, about how neither one of us wanted prolonged dying or to live long in illness or to lose our ability to care for ourselves. People need to talk about death and dying. It’s kind of a taboo subject in families. I can remember my own mother wanting to talk to me about it and me saying, “Oh, Mom, let’s not talk about this now.”

You’ve become the de facto face of the “right to die” movement.

Do you feel that impairs your ability to be a journalist?

I’m not an activist. I am not out there campaigning for anyone, for any organization. I am simply speaking about my own experience. I’m going to speak about my husband’s death. I’m going to speak about my own hope for myself — that when the time comes, I will have the right to choose how I wish to die. I’m only speaking from the heart and for myself, so I see no conflict journalistically.

The fact of the matter is, I’m not retiring. I’m stepping away from the microphone, but I’m going to continue to work — at WAMU in some capacity, on behalf of trying to find a cure for Parkinson’s, trying to find a cure for Alzheimer’s and speaking out personally about what I believe is the right to die.

other people who are grieving or friends of those who have experienced a great loss?

If a friend of yours is grieving, just listen. Just be there and be helpful in any way you can. And don’t push that person to “get over it.” I think there’s part of me that will probably grieve forever. When I’m alone, I miss John so much. I miss talking with him. I miss laughing with him. I’ll miss him forever, and I’ll think about him forever, but that doesn’t mean I will close down my life. I will keep living as long as I am healthy and well and have good thoughts and interesting things to do and interesting people to be with. But I will not push someone else who is grieving to do what I am doing.

I’ll just try to be with that person and be that person’s friend.

The George Washington University Museum and the Textile Museum: “A Collector’s Vision: Creating the Albert H. Small Washingtoniana Collection,” this exhibition presents highlights of the Albert H. Small Washingtoniana Collection, including 1,000 maps and prints, rare letters, photographs and drawings that document the history of Washington, D.C, “For the Record: The Art of Lily Spandorf,” this exhibition explores the artwork of Austrian-born

watercolorist and journalist Lily Spandorf (1914-2000). Working with pen, ink, watercolor and gouache, Spandorf became known for the news illustrations she created for the Washington Star, the Christian Science Monitor and The Washington Post. U.S. Botanic Garden: Flora of the National Parks, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, this exhibition showcases plant species and communities found throughout the more than 400 national parks. Giant redwoods, aspen

FLINT, MICH. “Creed” director Ryan Coogler, Ava DuVernay, Janelle Monae and other Hollywood celebrities have big plans for Oscar night. But they have nothing to do with the Academy Awards.

Coogler and company will be 2,300 miles away in Flint, Mich., participating in a benefit for residents affected by the town’s lead-contaminated water crisis.

DuVernay, Monae and others tweeted Tuesday about their involvement in the Sunday night event, which is being called #JusticeForFlint. Hosted by comedian Hannibal Buress, the free show will serve as both a fundraiser and an awareness campaign, complete with performances and testimonials.

Revolt.tv plans to stream it live.

About the same time on Sunday night, Coogler’s “Creed” is a favorite to win the best supporting actor Oscar for Sylvester Stallone’s reprise of his iconic Rocky character. It was the sole nomination for the critically acclaimed film, which many saw as yet another example of how the film academy is out of step with today’s audiences.

crisis stemming from a second straight year of all-white acting nominees, now symbolized by the Twitter hashtag #OscarsSoWhite.

Outrage over the Oscars’ all-white slates has included calls for a boycott of the ceremony from Hollywood notables like Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith, and it prompted the academy to announce sweeping changes to its membership rules.

Although Coogler and DuVernay have been at the center of the ongoing discussions about diversity in the entertainment industry, it was unclear whether they had ever planned to join the Oscar boycott or whether the simultaneous timing of the #JusticeForFlint show was at all related to

the boycott or just a coincidence.

Earlier this month, Stallone said he asked Coogler whether he should attend the Oscars in light of the boycott talk. Stallone said Coogler told him he should go and represent the film.

The uniting force behind the Flint event is Blackout for Human Rights, a collective founded

by Coogler that is committed to addressing human rights violations and injustices in the U.S. The organization boasts a number of notable members, including DuVernay, actor and musician Donald Glover, “Selma” lead actor David Oyelowo and Nate Parker, director and star of the upcoming “The Birth of a Nation.”

“Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda is in serious talks to star alongside Emily Blunt in Disney’s “Mary Poppins” sequel, Variety reported Wednesday. Miranda would play Jack, a lamplighter resembling the character of Bert, played by Dick Van Dyke in the 1964 classic. The sequel will be set in Depression-era London and will take storylines from P.L. Travers’ book focusing on Poppins’ adventures with the Banks family, according to Variety.
