A New Year’s word puzzle posted Monday on the English-language website of the People’s Daily, the Chinese Communist Party’s official newspaper, left many puzzlers puzzled. The game’s introduction told readers that the first three words they’d see “might define your 2017.” The words included “masturbate,” “testicle,” “turd” and a number of unprintable obscenities, the BBC reports. Snake found in toilet (not a plumber’s tool)

This yellow anaconda was found in a toilet at an apartment in Arlington. It got a new home after animal control officers rescued it.

for watery areas such as swamps and marshes. The aquatic affinity at least suggests why it might have felt at home in a toilet.

But that did not explain how the snake got in the apartment.

Chelsea Lindsey, a spokeswoman for the league, said there were probably two possibilities.

One is that someone who lived in the complex owned the snake as a pet but did not properly secure its cage, allowing it to escape. Or

it was abandoned in the building, something she said animal control experts see on occasion.

Then it got hungry and went into the pipes looking for food, likely mice, she said. It probably got into the pipes through another sink or toilet, she said.

“He unfortunately came up in this poor person’s bathroom,” Lindsey said.

Lindsey would not release the name or exact address of the apartment complex where the snake was found because she said authorities were trying to find the snake’s owner and because the case is under investigation.

The snake was safely removed by an animal control officer using tongs and other special equipment. The welfare league said it found a specialist who will be able to provide the reptile with proper care.

Group to hand joints out at inauguration A group of marijuana legalization advocates plans to hand out thousands of joints during President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration. Propot organization DCMJ will begin distributing the 4,200 joints at 8 a.m. on Jan. 20 on the west side of Dupont Circle.

The participants will then walk to the National Mall.

During Trump’s speech, DCMJ founder Adam Eidinger says protesters will light up. He says the giveaway is legal as long as it’s done on D.C. land.

Police say shoppers were mystified and alarmed when two young men wearing Donald Trump masks began boxing one another inside a Lowe’s store in Richmond, Va., on New Year’s Eve. Officers were summoned to the store Saturday because of a “disorderly display that scared customers,” Henrico County Police Capt.

Chris Eley told the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Witness Michael Willis, 59, said he saw the men hitting each other while yelling, “Donald Trump! Donald Trump!”

ARLINGTON Plumbers clear pipes with devices called snakes, but in Arlington last week, the plumbing contained the other kind of snake. It was an anaconda, an exotic slitherer more commonly associated with South America than Northern Virginia.

The Animal Welfare League of Arlington said the snake was found Dec. 27 in a toilet in an apartment on South 31st Street.

The league described it as a yellow anaconda and said it was a juvenile, about 4 feet long. A full-grown member of the species can reach 13 feet and weigh more than 100 pounds.

It is not venomous, but it is a constrictor, putting a powerful squeeze on its prey. When fully grown and “not well-socialized,” the league said, the snakes “can be dangerous.”

When venting goes viral

Guns in violin case, pails of ammo found at river U.S. Park Police say several weapons, including two guns in a violin case, were found along the Potomac River in D.C. Authorities say a woman walking Wednesday morning in the woods along the C&O Canal found the violin case near the Boathouse at Fletcher’s Cove. After law enforcers arrived, more guns and ammunition, some in pails, others in plastic garbage bags, were found. Park Police spokeswoman Sgt. Anna Rose says investigators don’t know how or when the weapons were put along the canal. (AP)

THE DISTRICT Teresa Shook never considered herself much of an activist, or someone particularly versed in feminist theory. But when the results of the presidential election became clear, the retired attorney in Hawaii turned to Facebook and asked: What if women marched on Washington around Inauguration Day en masse?

She asked her online friends how to create an event page, and then started one for the march she was hoping would happen.

By the time she went to bed, 40 women said they were in.

When she woke up, that number had exploded to 10,000.

Now, more than 150,000 people have registered their plans to attend the Women’s March on Washington, in what is expected to be the largest demonstration linked to Donald Trump’s inauguration and a focal point for activists on the left who have been energized in opposing his agenda.

Planning for the Jan. 21 march got off to a rocky start. Controversy initially flared over the name of the march, and whether it was inclusive enough of minorities, particularly AfricanAmericans, who have felt excluded from many mainstream feminist movements.

Organizers say plans are on track, after they secured a permit from D.C. police to gather 200,000 people near the Capitol at Independence Avenue and Third Street SW on the morning after Inauguration Day. Exactly how big the march will be has yet to be determined, with organizers scrambling to pull together the rest of the necessary permits and raise the money necessary to pull off a march triggered by Shook’s Facebook venting.

causes, from immigrant rights to police killings of AfricanAmericans. But at its heart is the demand for equal rights for women after an election that saw the defeat of Democrat Hillary Clinton, the first female presidential nominee of a major party.

“We plan to make a bold and clear statement to this country on the national and local level that we will not be silent and we will not let anyone roll back the rights we have fought and

struggled to get,” said Tamika Mallory, a veteran organizer and gun control advocate who is one of the march’s main organizers.

More than 150,000 women and men have responded on the march’s Facebook page that they plan on attending. At least 1,000 buses are headed to Washington for the march through Rally, a website that organizes buses to protests. Dozens of organizations, including Planned Parenthood and the antiwar group CodePink, have signed on as partners.

That all this could grow out of a dashed-off post from her perch nearly 5,000 miles from Washington is amazing to Shook, who has booked her ticket and plans to be in the capital on Jan. 21.

“I guess in my heart of hearts I wanted it to happen, but I didn’t really think it would’ve ever gone viral,” said Shook, who is in her 60s. “I don’t even know how to go viral.”

Hahrie Han, a political science professor at the University of California at Santa Barbara specializing in political organizations and political engagement, said it’s not all that surprising that individual women instead of an established organization founded this march. Established organizations all come with at least some political baggage.

Woman accused of using missing man’s credit card Police say the woman caught on camera using the credit card of a missing Bethesda man has turned herself in.

Montgomery County Police say Chernor Sheriff, 25, reported to a police station last week and was charged with credit card fraud. Sheriff was recorded on surveillance video Dec. 22 using the credit card of John Patrick Donohoe, 36. Donohoe was reported missing on Dec. 14. Six stations will be closed Super Bowl weekend Football fans planning on spending Super Bowl Sunday in downtown D.C. should avoid Metro’s Blue, Orange and Silver lines, which will be shuttered from Eastern Market to Foggy Bottom for that entire weekend.

local Homicide unit probes death in the woods of western Maryland MARYLAND Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a man whose remains were found Wednesday in the forested mountains of western Maryland shortly after a female companion walked out of the woods, suffering from hypothermia, authorities said.

The man’s body was found on a logging road and bore signs of trauma, Maryland State Police

spokesman Greg Shipley said.

He said police are still trying to confirm the man’s identity.

The state medical examiner’s office will determine the cause and manner of death, Shipley said.

The man and woman, both in their early 20s, were last seen together around 5 p.m. Tuesday near a Savage River State Forest trailhead near the rural community of Barton, about 140 miles west of Baltimore, Maryland Natural Resources Police spokeswoman Candy Thomson said.

She said her agency launched a search about 3 a.m. Wednesday

in response to a 911 call reporting them missing.

Thomson said the woman walked out of the woods to a house shortly before 9 a.m., and emergency responders were called. A Maryland State Police helicopter crew spotted the man’s body shortly thereafter on private property adjacent to the 54,000-acre state forest, she said.

Police have not released the woman’s name.

The pair drove separately to the trailhead area, where both cars were found, Thomson said.

local Bill makes tampering with tracking devices illegal in the District THE DISTRICT Something that lawmakers already thought was a crime in the District may soon be: tampering with a GPS device.

For over two years, high-risk offenders who cut off or disabled monitoring devices could not always be charged with doing so.

The Washington Post exposed the loophole last year in a series about leniency, lax oversight and

limited rehabilitation of the city’s most violent, repeat offenders.

The breakdown in GPS monitoring was rooted in the District’s unique local-federal split in its criminal justice system. The federal agency that watches offenders — the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency — had been using GPS tracking for a decade as a sanction for offenders who violate terms of parole or probation. But cutting off the devices it installed was never clearly made a crime.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said the gunman — who killed 39 people before reportedly escaping in a taxi — had been identified, but did not name him.

Police set up checkpoints across Istanbul as security levels remained high.

The city has been on edge since the attack on the upscale club, and on Wednesday residents beat up a man said to resemble the wanted gunman before handing him over to police, the Dogan news agency reported.

Some 20 people, including 11 women, were taken into custody in police raids in the Aegean port city of Izmir, the state-run Anadolu agency said.

The suspects, from the largely Muslim Russian republic of Dagestan, as well as members of China’s Muslim Uighur minority and from Syria, were believed to have lived with the gunman in an alleged ISIS cell house in the central Turkish city of Konya, the agency reported.

Guilty verdict rips deeper Israeli rift Military court convicts soldier in fatal shooting of unarmed Palestinian ISRAEL The rare manslaughter conviction Wednesday of an Israeli soldier who fatally shot a badly wounded Palestinian attacker exposed a deepening rift between proponents of the rule of law and a strong nationalist movement.

The military court verdict against Sgt. Elor Azaria marked a victory for commanders seeking to preserve a code of ethics, but it also brought calls for a pardon from prominent hardline politicians — led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — who expressed sympathy for the soldier or depicted him as the victim of a detached elite.

“If you want the justice system to be taken seriously, you have to punish something like this,” said Amichai Cohen of the nonpartisan Israeli Democracy Institute think tank. “The court can’t be influenced by the changing political climate.”

Azaria, an army medic, was caught on video by a human rights worker fatally shooting Abdel Fattah al-Sharif, a wounded Palestinian attacker who had stabbed a soldier in the West Bank city of Hebron. Sharif was on the ground, unarmed and virtually motionless, when Azaria fired a single bullet in his head.

POLITICS Congressional Republicans launched their long-promised effort on Wednesday to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, even as they acknowledged that they may need several months to develop a sequel along conservative lines.

Signifying the priority that the issue has for the incoming administration, Vice Presidentelect Mike Pence met privately with House and Senate Republicans while President Barack Obama made a rare Capitol Hill appearance, meeting behind closed doors with Democrats from both chambers.

The dueling, high-level visits highlighted the sharp political fault lines that surround the future of the government’s health policies.

Participants in the meeting with Obama said he told members of his party they did not have to “rescue” Republicans and that they should “stay strong” as they labored to replace the law.

Pence met with House Republicans to discuss plans to reverse the health-care law and a slew of other executive actions.

He told reporters that he and Trump would pursue a “twotrack approach” to chip away at the ACA through a combination of executive powers and legislation. Trump is “working on a

nation+world CHARLESTON, S.C. Convicted Charleston church shooter Dylann Roof spoke to the jury for the first time at his death penalty trial Wednesday, telling them there is nothing wrong with him psychologically.

Roof, 22, didn’t ask jurors to spare him from the death penalty. The jury last month unanimously found Roof guilty of hate crimes and other charges in the shooting deaths of nine black church members during Bible study. The jurors will now decide whether he should be sentenced to life in prison or death.

“My opening statement is going to seem a little bit out of place,” Roof said. “Other than the fact that I trust people that I shouldn’t and the fact that I’m probably better at constantly embarrassing myself than anyone who’s ever existed, there’s nothing wrong with me psychologically.”

Prosecutors also read from the journal found in Roof’s jail cell six weeks after his arrest. His handwritten words were projected on screens in the courtroom.

Still unproven: Barry’s too green to stay with team Washington. Is the franchise really prepared to bet on Barry as it moves into the “win big” phase of its reconstruction? The situation calls for a more proven coordinator.

The team is desperate for defensive coaching ingenuity in order to circumvent how much it is spending on offense.

According to overthecap.com, Washington spent 64 percent of its salary cap, excluding dead money, on the offense.

It was the second-priciest offense in the NFL, behind Dallas. The defense was the league’s second cheapest. And the price of the offense could rise, assuming quarterback Kirk Cousins receives a new contract.

An upgrade at defensive coordinator would be a shrewd investment that doesn’t interfere with managing the salary cap.

That’s where this gets tricky. It would be silly for Gruden, who says it will be his call, to fire Barry without being certain that he can get a top-notch coordinator. If a change is made, Gruden must

The Redskins shouldn’t do it out of frustration, or in response to a barking fan base, or just to try something new.

This decision is about building the best defense possible under current circumstances.

Given how the team’s roster has developed since Barry arrived, the job description for the ideal defensive coordinator has changed.

As the franchise prepares for its third year under general manager Scot McCloughan and its fourth under coach Jay Gruden, there can’t be as much tolerance for waiting and hoping. It’s unclear what Barry is building, but the results have been poor, and his track record is even worse, dating back to that 0-16 Lions defense in 2008.

But Bradley is reportedly a package deal with Buffalo’s Anthony Lynn, should he get one of six head coaching jobs currently open. Former Cleveland coach Mike Pettine and former Minnesota coach Leslie Frazier, who is the secondary coach in Baltimore, are two more intriguing options.

This decision shouldn’t be about fairness, blame or continuity.

Certainty is what Gruden should be seeking. He’s an offensive coach still learning to be the CEO of the entire team.

He needs a head coach of the defense. He needs someone whose system provides an edge that elevates the talent level. Flawed continuity is useless, and that’s what the team will discover if Barry continues running the defense.

Williams bounces back with 8 goals, 7 assists over past 14 contests

NHL In his 16-year NHL career, Justin Williams had endured slumps, but the latest one tested even his patience. He admitted feeling frustrated but still got on the ice early before practice and occasionally stayed late to work on his shot, drafting the Capitals’ youngest players to join him. Hard work had helped Williams snap out of droughts before, so he figured this wouldn’t be any different.

His recent hot streak has come with goals that follow the same principle: Williams has wedged his way in front of the net, scoring by exploiting his good position. His three-point night Tuesday in a 6-5 overtime win over the Maple Leafs followed that formula, his one goal deflecting in off his skate in front.

Williams, 35, started the season with just two goals and two assists in his first 23 games.

Ahead of tonight’s game against the visiting Blue Jackets, he has eight goals and seven assists in the past 14 games.

“He’s still got it,” Alex Ovechkin said.

“I hope so,” Williams said.

A long day with family STAGE Some of the audiences for “The Gabriels” will have a long day ahead of them. And night.

A series of three plays written

by Richard Nelson, “The Gabriels” is making its D.C. debut at the Kennedy Center. Most ticket holders will see the plays on three consecutive nights; however, audiences can see all three plays back to back in full-day marathons on weekends. If that sounds tough on the butt, imagine what the actors have to do.

Jay O. Sanders and Maryann Plunkett play two of the Gabriels: Mary and George, a sister- and brother-in-law who repeatedly meet over a kitchen table during the election season of 2016.

In the first play of the series, “Hungry,” Mary and George and

their relatives meet in March to scatter the ashes of Mary’s husband (who was George’s brother). The clan reunites in the second play, “What Did You Expect?” during the general election, discussing things like Hillary Clinton’s pneumonia and Donald Trump’s appearance on “The Tonight Show.” The final play, “Women of a Certain Age,” takes place on Election Night.

“It’s really the year of mourning in this family,” Plunkett says.

“With the election-year politics and shenanigans, there is also the very personal story of this family.”

Plunkett and Scott, who are married, think of “The Gabriels” as a single play that happens to be broken up for some performances.

(For the Kennedy Center run, “Hungry” is performed on Tuesdays, “What Did You Expect?” on Wednesdays and “Women of a Certain Age” on Thursdays.)

If you want to take in all of ‘The Gabriels,’ you’d better get comfortable

up in the first play that are played out in the second and resolved in the third,” Sanders says. “They are designed to play together.”

The two actors have been with the production since “Hungry’s” premiere last winter at The Public Theater in New York; they were also part of Nelson’s four-play cycle “The Apple Family Plays,” also at The Public. So they’re aware of the energy it takes to occupy the stage for such a long time.

It helps that the characters of “The Gabriels” prepare a meal onstage during each play. In the 45-minute break between

the first and the second plays of the marathon performances, “I just snack a little bit on what I’ve prepared: ratatouille and pasta and apple crisp,” Plunkett says.

“Then we get a meal in between the second and third.”

“That’s when we get a twohour break,” Sanders says. (The audience does too.) “Then most of us will take a nap for about 20 minutes.” When they’ve completed the eight-hour marathon … well, they’re not sure what will happen next.

“We’ve never done [the show] on the road before,” Plunkett

says. “We tend to just go home.”

The physical and mental challenges aside, both actors say their preparation for the marathon sessions has shed new light on the individual plays.

“You understand them better and more richly,” Sanders says. “In fact, playing them individually, in a funny way, feels like, ‘Oh, is that all?’ ” KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

How Mama became Mama in just a month B’Ellana Duquesne pulls from her life experience for her role in ‘Charm’ STAGE On Dec. 8, B’Ellana Duquesne walked into the Atlas Performing Arts Center as an understudy for a play called “Charm.” She left as the star of the show.

“I was so surprised and excited,” she recalls. “I called everyone I knew.”

Though the casting change was news to Duquesne, the reasons for it had been building for months.

It all began in the spring, when acclaimed D.C. actor KenYatta Rogers auditioned for the lead role in “Charm,” which tells the story of a 60-something transgender lady called Mama who starts a charm school for homeless transgender youth.

“He made me cry, his reading was so moving,” says director Natsu Onoda Power, who

gave Rogers the part. Rogers, a 40-something cisgender guy (that is to say, one whose biological sex matches his gender identity), was excited about the stretch of a role, and began reaching out to the D.C. trans community to learn about their experiences.

“All I heard back was crickets,” Rogers says. “No one was returning my calls.”

That sparked conversations within the Mosaic Theater Company, which is producing the play, and the rest of “Charm’s” cast and crew. The question of who has the right to represent whom onstage is a knotty one, but a consensus began to emerge, says Mosaic founding director Ari Roth.

“After we cast the show, we kept learning things — not only about the transgender community, but also about ourselves and how we wanted more alignment between our mission and our values,” he says. “Plus, people were not excited about a cisgender

That’s why, just a month before the play’s official premiere Sunday, Onoda Power recruited Duquesne to play the lead role of Mama, and Rogers stepped into a behind-the-scenes role as the play’s associate director.

“Was I disappointed? Yes,” Rogers says. “But I came into this process as an ally first and an actor second.”

Duquesne had initially tried out for the role of Mama, but had been passed over because

of her relative lack of theater experience, Roth says. Her life experience, however, has given her a lot to draw from. Like Mama, Duquesne is a black, trans woman in her 60s.

“I remember what it was like in the bad old days, in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, when being trans was not chic,” she says.

A former high school teacher, Duquesne remembers how to connect with guarded teens.

She also learned how to gain control of an unruly classroom: “A whisper can be as powerful as a yell,” she says. Those experiences have helped Duquesne get into the character of Mama, a woman who believes that if she can teach homeless, trans kids to respect themselves, they will be more successful when demanding respect from the world.

“Just like Mama, I have told kids to pull their pants up more times than I can count,” Duquesne says.

Of course, there are many ways in which Duquesne is unlike her character. For instance, she identifies as gender-fluid and goes by the male name and persona Jack Eng about 20 percent of the time. Mama, on the other hand, can’t brook such modern ideas. “How ya gonna ask people to treat you like a gentleman or a lady if you’re forever switching up sides,” Mama says during “Charm,” when one of her students dresses as a woman but wants to be treated like a man.

“Mama is a lot like my mom.

She’s old-school, proper and a little Southern,” Duquesne says.

The past month has been a crash course for Duquesne, who has been practicing her lines night and day. She’s also been dressing more like Mama, in ladylike heels and skirts. As a result, the line between actor and character has begun to blur.

“The other day, I put on a little suit and saw myself in the mirror and said, ‘Oh my lord, I’m turning into my mama,’ ” she says.

How to know if it’s safe to go?

For starters, skating is allowed everywhere except for sections where the water is wide, so stay away from the area between mile markers 12.6 and 13.4, aka between Great Falls and the Billy Goat A trail. Look for other people — ideally who are heavier than you — skating on the canal, and proceed with caution.

The Drug Enforcement Administration museum (700 Army Navy Drive, Arlington) has more than 2,000 objects dealing with drugs, both legal and illegal.

The exhibits include “Illegal Drugs in America: A Modern History,” which examines the legal, moral and criminal effects of drug addiction and trafficking, and “Good Medicine, Bad Behavior,” which takes a look at the current epidemic of prescription drug abuse. They also accept donations of paraphernalia, if you’re looking to get rid of your college-era bong.

A German b-boy crew turns the composer’s music on its head for ‘Red Bull Flying Bach’

DANCE When German break-dancer Vartan Bassil came up with the idea for “Red Bull Flying Bach,” he hoped to bring together those who sneer at pop culture and those who snore at high culture.

And he hoped to impress the other parents in the room.

“At my kid’s school, there was a parents’ night and they asked me, ‘What is your job?’ ” Bassil, 41, says from his home in Berlin. “I think [that] when I tell them that I am a break-dancer, they will look to me and say, ‘How do you make money with this?’ Then I understand that I have to do something with the high culture for people who know nothing about breakdancing, to show them how artful break-dancing is.”

What he did — “Red Bull Flying Bach” — combines breakdancing with the music of Johannes Sebastian Bach’s “The Well-Tempered Clavier” to tell the story of a dance class preparing for an upcoming recital.

The nine-person show features members of the Flying Steps, the b-boy crew Bassil co-founded in Berlin in 1993. The troupe, which has won competitions around the

world, teamed with the Austriabased energy-drink company in 2010 to produce “Red Bull Flying Bach.” A hit in Europe and now on its first U.S. tour, the show is mostly break-dancing with a sprinkling of classical elements — something Bassil wanted to embrace after attending a classical dance concert with his mother-in-law.

“I thought, when the ballet dancers turn on the feet, maybe we are turning on the head,” Bassil says. “And I think, maybe we can find more similar moves.”

With “Flying Bach,” he wants to show the link between classical dancing and more modern forms. The show even features a classically trained dancer

showcasing traditional ballet.

“The old people, they don’t know about break-dancing. They think, ‘Break-dancing, they are making competition, they are making sport, it is not a dance,’ ” Bassil says. “It was important to show them we are dancers, we can choreograph.”

Bassil aims to win over audiences who might view a night at the symphony as nothing more than an expensive napping opportunity.

“Parents take their kids to the classical concerts and nobody wants to go,” he says. “Everybody says, ‘What do I have to do there? It’s really boring.’ [We wanted] to give young people the opportunity to go to a classic concert so you can learn something about high culture, but also you enjoy the show. We like [that] the kids can take the parents and say, ‘Look, Father; look, Mother: This is hip-hop.’ And the parents can take the kids and say, ‘In the beginning, this was dance.’ ” KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

Did you notice a lot of movies on critics’ best-of-2016 lists that you hadn’t even heard of yet? That’s because those critics got to see movies that were released only in a few cities before year’s end to secure Oscar eligibility for February’s ceremony. Now these films are beginning to roll out in D.C. You could start with “Silence,” Martin Scorsese’s tale of Portuguese Jesuit missionaries in 17th-century Japan, a place where practicing Christianity was punishable by death. Opening locally on Friday, the film stars Andrew Garfield, above, and Adam Driver as priests trying to find their mentor (Liam Neeson), who is rumored to have abandoned the faith.

‘A Monster Calls’

Adam Driver also heads up “Paterson,” an indie with a lot of Oscar buzz. Written and directed by Jim Jarmusch, it follows a New Jersey bus driver (yep, Driver) perfectly content with the routine of his life. He’s married to Laura (Golshifteh Farahani), who wants and needs every day to be different.

“Paterson,” opening locally Friday, is a week in the lives of two people whose love bridges their differences.

There’s not a lot of major awards buzz surrounding “A Monster Calls,” which also opens locally Friday, but it’s still being quietly recognized by critics as an emotionally powerful modern example of magical realism (and look for it to get an Oscar nod for best visual effects). Lewis MacDougall plays Conor, a boy who uses a giant, treelike monster (voiced by Liam Neeson) to try to come to terms with his mother’s (Felicity Jones) terminal illness.

“Chinamania,” inspired by his travels in China and by the kilns at Jingdezhen, contemporary artist Walter McConnell created an installation of Kangxi porcelains similar to those originally displayed in the Peacock Room.

“Gauri Gill: Notes From the Desert,” featuring 56 of Gill’s prints and including portraits and letters, this exhibition showcases her work photographing marginalized communities in remote western Rajasthan, India. “Red: Ming Dynasty/Mark Rothko,” created more than five centuries apart and through disparate processes, an imperial Chinese porcelain dish and a painting by Rothko, juxtaposed, reveal an uncanny similarity in vivid red. “Sky Blue: Color in Ceramics of the Islamic World,” the vessels on view span the ninth through the 19th centuries and demonstrate mineral colors of cobalt blue and copper green as pigments for painting and writing on the clay or as colorants in glazes. “The Art of the Qur’an: Treasures From the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts,” this exhibition presents nearly 70 manuscripts that demonstrate, through calligraphy and illumination, the book’s significant role in the history of the arts in the Islamic world. “Turquoise Mountain: Artists Transforming Afghanistan,” artisans from the Murad Khani district of Old Kabul demonstrate their work and share their experiences.

Roxane Gay keeps life complicated BOOKS Anyone familiar with Roxane Gay’s work will not be surprised by the territory she travels in her new story collection, “Difficult Women.” Racial tension, gender conflict and class disparity push and pull at these storylines. But Gay takes rewarding risks, placing traditional narratives about failed relationships alongside inventive stories that dive into surrealism.

Gay is a renow ne d c u l tural critic and woman of ideas — and the real gift to readers in “Difficult Women” is her ability to marry her intellectual concerns with good storytelling. The book explores the lives of women who, because of sex, race, class or demeanor, have been silenced or deemed “difficult”: weary maids fending off advances, victims of assault, sex workers, a black engineer tired of patronizing co-workers. We glimpse the slights and economic hardships

these women endure and see how emotional damage manifests itself into hardened personalities. We come to understand why a woman might choose being “difficult” over a life spent being appealing.

One of the book’s greatest achievements is Gay’s psychological acuity in the creation of female characters who are teeming with dissonance and self-awareness. One woman, accused of being loose, avoids real love because she has “already learned the dangers of sincerity.” Another, in “The Mark of Cain,” pretends not to know that her husband and his twin switch places in her bed. “I am the kind of woman who doesn’t mind indulging the deception,” she tells the reader. Later, they will drink wine and “practice being normal.” These knowing women realize that “normal” lives are performative.

Readers long used to maledominated grit lit and sexual violence directed toward women in movies and books may find the inverse of these tropes surprising — like the all-out female slugfest in the basement of a shopping mall, or a daughter who sleeps with her dead father’s mistress. Men are portrayed as hapless virgins, and some leave

TELEVISION After four seasons of escalating melodrama, “Nashville” is preparing for a key change. Picked up by CMT last year after its cancellation by ABC, the series set in country music’s capital begins its fifth season at 9 p.m. Thursday.

And it’s coming with a fresh creative team promising a move away from the soapy theatrics that came to define the show.

In Season 4 alone, those included a plane crash, an attempted suicide and a guy falling from a high-rise rooftop.

Yet such contrivances have no place in Season 5, according to Marshall Herskovitz, the veteran showrunner who’s taken over “Nashville” with his longtime producing partner, Ed Zwick.

“We’re betting that a deep, emotional connection to the characters will be a stronger pull for the audience than the OMG effect,” Herskovitz says.

To foster that connection, they’re also renewing the show’s emphasis on music, which eventually became an afterthought, lost in the shuffle of betrayals, overdoses and crimes.

“To make things happen at such a fast metabolic rate was to deny the music the chance to do what music can do best,” says Zwick, “which is to grow and to linger — to provide a kind of emotional foundation.”

Kanye West reportedly made a large purchase of toys just before Christmas. The rapper “dropped just north of $20,000 for 12 URB-Es — the foldable, motorized scooter that goes up to 15 mph,” TMZ reported. The scooters are equipped with such accessories as leather handle straps, a cellphone mount and a cellphone charger.
