Akin Defies Calls to Exit Race
Romney, McConnell say lawmaker should suspend Senate bid
A defiant Rep. Todd Akin dismissed pleas from top Republicans to abandon his besieged Senate campaign Tuesday, saying party leaders including presumptive presidential nominee Mitt Romney were overreacting to his comments that women’s bodies can prevent pregnancies in cases of “legitimate rape.” Akin, who has been frantically trying to salvage his once-promising bid against incumbent Democrat Claire McCaskill, said the uproar surrounding the remarks was out of proportion with his mistake — misspeaking “one word in one sentence on one day.” For the second time in two days, Akin went on the radio show hosted by former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee to say he planned to stay in the race: “I guess my question is: Is there a matter of some justice here?”

Hours before the interview, Akin posted an online video in which he fully apologized for his comments. “Fact is, rape can lead to pregnancy. The truth is, rape has

Romney Shows His Faith Candidate opens up about his leadership in Mormon church
8WYaijeho Mormonism is both a belief system and an all-encompassing way of life that stresses hard work and volunteerism along with religious observance. Religion has shaped every aspect of Mitt Romney’s life. D[mOeha Mitt Romney is starting to open up a bit more about his lifelong commitment to Mormonism and his lay leadership in the church, following pleas from backers who say that talking about his faith could help him overcome his struggles to connect with voters. “Who shares your values?” a recent Romney ad asked — suggesting that the Republican presidential candidate was the answer. “When religious freedom is threatened, who do you want to stand with?” The commercial was the start of a broader Romney effort to emphasize values and religion as he courts undecided voters — in a nation where most people say they want a president with strong religious beliefs — to compete with Presi-

And he has asked a fellow Mormon to give an invocation before Romney addresses the Republican National Convention next week. Romney will be the first Mormon presidential nominee of a major political party, and highlighting his faith carries risks, given that 19 percent of respondents in a recent Pew Research Center poll said they were uncomfortable with Romney’s Mormon faith. Train Derails, Killing 2 in Md. Teens’ final tweets offer a glimpse into moments leading up to deadly accident

ÇB[l_jWj_d] 6B_pDWiijoÈ — @R0SE _ PE TA L S, TWEETING A PHOTO FROM THE RAILROAD BRIDGE
They were seemingly ordinary tweets from two friends hanging out on a railroad bridge in their hometown, enjoying one last summer night together before heading back to college. “Drinking on top of the Ellicott City sign,” read one. Photos showed their view from the bridge, their feet dangling over the edge. Minutes after those messages were sent, a CSX freight train loaded with coal barreled down the tracks and derailed, killing the 19-year-old women and toppling railcars and coal on the streets below. Investigators were trying to figure out what caused the derailment around midnight Monday. It appeared the women were sitting on the edge of the bridge as the train passed behind them, Howard County police said. It derailed at some point, and the women’s bodies were found buried under coal. It was unclear whether the women’s presence had anything to do with the derailment. Killed were Elizabeth Conway Nass, a student at James Madison University in Virginia, and Rose Louese Mayr, a nursing student at the University of Delaware. The railroad is accessible from downtown Ellicott City and generations of young people have played and partied along the tracks. The tracks cross over Main Street in the city’s historic district, according to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum. “We grew up running on those tracks,” said Ellicott City native Bridgette Hammond, 25. “It’s actually really beautiful up there.” Nass and Mayr planned to finish college in 2014, according to
Workers clear the scene Tuesday, after a train carrying coal derailed Monday in Ellicott City, Md., and killed two 19-year-olds.
7Xekjj^[JhW_d The train in Monday night’s fatal derailment in Ellicott City, Md., had two locomotives, was 3,000 feet long and weighed 9,000 tons, officials said. About 100 pounds of coal the train was carrying spilled into a tributary of the Patapsco River, a major Maryland waterway that parallels the tracks. Maryland Department of the Environment spokesman Jay Apperson said much more coal lay along the edge of the tributary, raising concerns it could boost the acidity of the water or otherwise threaten aquatic life. An NTSB spokesman said he did not know how long it will take to clear the tracks. (AP)
their Facebook pages. One of Nass’ sorority sisters, Donya Mossadeghi, called her “a joy to talk to.” Nass made the dean’s list in the fall of 2010 and the fall of 2011, according to a university spokesman.
Tori Mace of Ellicott City knew Mayr through mutual friends. “She was really fun, really friendly,” Mace said. A person who answered the telephone at Nass’ home declined to comment, as did a family member
who answered the phone at a number listed for the Mayr family. The pictures and the tweets from Mayr were no longer publicly available Tuesday afternoon, but police said they were aware of the posts and looking into them. A CSX spokesman said that the train was traveling from Grafton, W.Va., to Baltimore. It had two train operators, who were not harmed. Jim Southworth, the investigator in charge for the National Transportation Safety Board, declined to speculate on a possible cause. He said the train was going about 25 mph but would not say whether that was an appropriate speed for the area.

Because the Nationals didn’t pay the system to extend operations MWi^_d]jed The Washington Nationals outlasted the Atlanta Braves in 13 innings Monday. The game started late because of rain and didn’t wrap up until well after midnight, which meant that commuters who took Metro to the ballpark couldn’t board a train home. This isn’t a new issue, and it’s likely to occur again as the season continues. The Nationals have three more weeknight games scheduled
this week and eight such games in September and October, to say nothing of games that could run long on weekends. So here’s a quick rundown of how this happens and why: It costs Metro $29,500 for each hour it stays open late or each hour it is open early. This isn’t just about keeping the Navy Yard station open, because a fan could be going to any of the 85 other stops within the system. As a result, all stations must remain open and staffed, while all trains have to run in both directions on all five lines, Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said in an email. The Washington Capitals have
Metro’s Navy Yard station was closed Monday after the Nats game ended late.
an agreement with Metro that has the transit agency stay open late during the playoffs. (Requisite mention of May’s triple-overtime Caps/Rangers game.) The Nationals have no such agreement, though they did make arrangements for a June game against the Phillies, as reported by the Washington Post’s Dan Steinberg earlier this summer. A portion of this $29,500 deposit is refunded to the event organizer, though this is based on how many riders enter the system during the extra hour. Metro calculates the number of riders during the extra hour of service and refunds some of that money to the organizers.
The key thing here, according to Stessel, is that event organizers have to make these plans in advance. The agreement has to be signed and a deposit has to be paid before the event, he said. As Steinberg pointed out in June, any baseball game could theoretically last beyond Metro’s closing time. It’s not as if the Nats could have predicted that Monday’s game would start an hour late and last for 13 innings. And they couldn’t have decided at 11:45 p.m. that they would definitely need another hour of Metro service, because the agreement and deposit are needed in advance. But the Nationals can sign an agreement and put down a deposit for a future game without naming the game in advance, Stessel said. MARK BERMAN (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Kaine Goes Positive With First Senate Campaign Ad Timothy M. Kaine is up with his first ad of the U.S. Senate campaign, one that features the former Democratic governor making a Kaine positive, direct appeal to voters. The tone of the commercial marks a sharp break from the deluge of negative spots that third-party groups have aired for weeks on behalf of both Kaine and his Republican opponent, former senator and governor George Allen. One day last week, conservative groups launched three ads blasting Kaine. The next day, two liberal groups hit the airwaves with new ads attacking Allen. (TWP)

Washington is the nation’s 10th most honest metro area — right on par with Sin City, according to a recent “honesty experiment.” The rankings come from the Bethesda-based company Honest Tea, which for the third year set up unmanned beverage stands nationwide, asking people to leave a dollar for each bottle they took. In the District, four stands were set up between Aug. 12 and 19 at the Dupont Farmers Market, Nationals Park, K Street NW and Capitol Hill. According to Honest Tea, 95 percent of Washingtonians paid for their drinks that day. MAGGIE FA ZELI FARD

DejWiIf[Y_Wb During the 1990s, no team in the country blocked more kicks than Virginia Tech, which had 66 in the decade. Since 2003, however, that figure has been cut in half to 30 blocked kicks, including only one in two of the past three seasons. Last year, meanwhile, the Hokies scored only one touchdown through a blocked punt or turnover, their lowest total since 1990. The Hokies also finished 2011 ranked 108th in the country in net punting average and 94th in kickoff returns.

B[jÊiiehjekj j^[\WYjiWdZ \_Yj_edi_dj^_i ceijkdkikWb e\ikcc[hi$ Fiction: The Redskins will make the playoffs. Look, Robert Griffin III looks like the real deal. But the Redskins’ offensive line doesn’t, and the rookie needs time to make … well, rookie mistakes. This should be an exciting season full of hope, but that’s it for Mike Shanahan’s crew. Fact: The NHL season won’t start on time. Normally, I don’t side with the players as much as a common fan does in sports labor disputes. But 10-plus-year contracts are shockingly common in hockey, so owners crying poor just doesn’t make sense. Then again, the only league in recent memory to eliminate a whole season tempting fate with bitter lastminute negotiations again doesn’t make sense, either. It’s a strange new world in D.C. this August. Our baseball team is really good, our football team is interesting, and buried beneath it all is a black cloud over the NHL. I know, this is hard to comprehend. Let’s sort out the facts and fictions in this most unusual of summers. Fact: It is not too ridiculous to dream of a Battle of the Beltway World Series. If the playoffs had started 8oCWjj Tuesday, both the NaIm[died tionals and the Orioles would have been in. That means they both have a shot to reach the Fall Classic. Of course, Stephen Strasburg’s innings limit wouldn’t be an issue if the season ended now, so this is probably too good to be true. Still, the dream is alive!
Virginia Tech head football coach Frank Beamer has seen the Hokies’ special teams unit decline in production in recent years.
‘Beamer Ball’ Rebooted Va. Tech working to regain its good name on special teams >ea_[i<eejXWbb As he moved his way up the coaching ladder over the past decade, Shane Beamer would inevitably get the same question about his father’s football program whenever he sat down for a job interview: “What makes Virginia Tech so good at special teams?” In recent years, college coaches have made annual pilgrimages to Blacksburg in hopes of discovering the secret. Former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel and former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis each brought their entire coaching staffs to campus, and NFL special teams coordinators also have visited.
“They saw what an impact it made on games and now everybody in the country sees that, and because of that, you hate to say they caught up with us, but everybody has put added importance on it,” said Shane Beamer, who coached at Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Mississippi State and South Carolina before returning to Virginia Tech last offseason as associate head coach. “There’s no bigger momentum-changer than to score a touchdown on special teams, and I know teams saw that and emulated it.” But as coach Frank Beamer embarks on his 26th season at Virginia Tech, he has had to face a new reality. The program that inspired the nickname “Beamer Ball” because of its penchant for scoring touchdowns via special teams and defense hasn’t been all
that good at it of late. Shane Beamer, who was a long snapper for Virginia Tech when it made a run to the BCS title game at the end of the 1999 season, said the pressure of living up to the Beamer Ball name isn’t the issue. But there is no doubt the Hokies have been in a steady special teams decline. “I just think the way the game’s going, you’re going to end up getting more returns than blocked kicks, just the way the punt formation has come around,” said Frank Beamer said, who calls the punt block unit “Pride and Joy.” Even in that regard, though, Virginia Tech saw its performance slip a year ago, averaging more than two yards fewer per punt return. Coaching special teams is a staff effort at Virginia Tech, and play-call-
Frank Beamer never could settle on one punter a year ago, and by the end of the season, he turned to wide receiver Danny Coale. A botched fake punt by Coale nearly derailed Virginia Tech in its Sugar Bowl loss to Michigan, giving the Wolverines the ball in Hokies territory with the score tied late in the fourth quarter. In training camp this summer, freshmen A.J. Hughes and Hunter Windmuller and sophomore Michael Branthover are battling to be the team’s punter. Beamer, always a stickler on special teams, is never far away during their daily kicking competitions, often standing just behind the action to add pressure. (T WP)
er Mike O’Cain is the lone assistant not involved with one of the Hokies’ special teams units. Offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring learned this offseason that strategy won’t be changing any time soon. A few mont hs ago, he approached Frank Beamer about potentially decreasing his role as part of the “Pride and Joy” team in hopes of focusing more on his offensive duties. If Stinespring had any doubts about how important Beamer Ball remains at Virginia Tech, he got his answer then. “He looked at me and said, ‘Big boy, I’m looking at it this way: You want to spend less time on the pride team, make sure we don’t punt,’ ” Stinespring said with a laugh. The Tupac Shakur hologram sparks the estates of other dead stars to follow suit
Smooth Transition American television has a hard time remaking British comedies. For every rare success story, such as “The Office,” there’s a graveyard of failures: “Spaced,” “The IT Crowd,” “Coupling.” After MTV bailed on its remake of “Skins,” I expected a similar fate for “The Inbetweeners,” a raunchy high school-set comedy that earned four seasons and a movie in Britain. To my surprise, the pilot for MTV’s “Inbetweeners” (Mon., 10:30 p.m.) stands on its own fairly well. 8oHkZ_ Rather than attempt to =h[[dX[h] copy every plot point and line from the original, it combines the first two episodes into one, injects some new dialogue and tweaks a few characters. More importantly, it keeps the vulgar sex jokes and awkward situations that made the U.K. one so outlandishly funny. It’s also a show that seems tailormade for MTV’s audience: All the creators had to do was update the setting and change some slang. Take the scene where one of the four main boys gets hammered and visits his longtime crush while she’s baby-sitting her little brother. After chugging some more liquor, he tries to make a move and vomits all over her and her brother. Some things are universally funny. Read Rudi’s previous columns at: expressnightout.com/insidejokes
Cki_Y When Tupac Shakur rose from the stage in California earlier this year, it was not only a jaw-dropping resurrection, but also the beginning of a new form of live entertainment. “Come with me,” the digital Shakur called out, not just to tens of thousands of screaming fans but seemingly to other artists. Follow, they will. Elvis Presley’s estate announced it has authorized holograms of the King of Rock ’n’ Roll, Marilyn Monroe’s estate has expressed interest, and there’s no shortage of other beloved stars whose fans would die to see them perform again. Advances in digital artistry make it all possible, presenting celebrity estates with new commercial and creative opportunities, but also some ethical quandaries. “I think we’ve scratched the surface with Tupac,” says Dylan Brown, a filmmaker who along with director Philip Atwell and effects studio Digital Domain helped bring the Shakur hologram to life. “If it’s done tastefully, like Tupac was done tastefully, I think it could be a wonderful form of entertainment.” Reaction to the Shakur hologram was huge, with the performance garnering 15 million YouTube hits within 48 hours. “You start to open up a whole new universe of legal questions,” says Ed Ulbrich, Chief Creative Officer of Digital Domain, which is also working on the Presley holograms. “As such, we have no intentions of doing anything other than being
All in the Details Part of the challenge with the Tupac Shakur hologram was integrating his performance into the larger show featuring Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre. Shakur’s entry and exit had to be carefully planned to fit into the show, with the creators opting to have his image burst apart into a cloud of gold specks. Dylan Brown, who worked on the project, says it seemed appropriate: “He has a mystique and that aura that kind of transcends death even.” (AP)

utterly respectful of these legends and icons.” Stars wield extensive control over how their names, voices and images are used after they die through likeness, trademark and copyright protections, and now holograms offer them yet another consideration. While holograms are likely covered by existing laws, potential legal challenges will likely focus on whether the performance is protected by the First Amendment. Brown and Atwell say they felt enormous pressure to make sure the Shakur performance was worthy of introducing to a new form of live entertainment. “I also hope that the people who do follow us do it with the same care and the same sense of dedication because I would hate to see a bad version of Marilyn Monroe, a bad version of Elvis up there,” Brown says. But Songz knows man cannot live on sex, love and VIP-section fun alone, so “Chapter V” introduces a fourth element into the singer’s thematic repertoire — football. “Hail Mary” with Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy compares loving a woman to a long-shot football pass, and on “Fumble,” Songz regrettably drops the ball on a strong relationship. What is Yeasayer all about? It’s a question that remains unanswered three albums into the band’s career, with “Fragrant World” adding to the confusion and giving us little sense of the Brooklyn trio’s mission.
<hW]hWdj MehbZ Yeasayer
On “Fragrant World,” Yeasayer is simply adrift in a sea of shapeless sounds. The album is a self-produced affair, and every keyboard gurgle, whir and spring sounds labored over. The focus on specific sonic detail comes at the expense of fully realized songs. “Demon Road” sounds like four minutes of background noises smushed together. If the album has any defining feature, it’s a shift from atmospheric landscapes to something more funky. The beats on “Henrietta” have serious impact, and as the song drifts from big thumps into a dreamy outro, it feels, for a moment, as though the band has found an identity it’s been searching for. DeA[oi\ehOek Too young or too old? Beware of roadblocks when renting a car 7Zl_Y[ Gordon White is 79. Kevin Chang is 24. Both recently tried to rent cars but ran into trouble because of their age. White, a writer who lives in Deltaville, Va., reserved a car in Glasgow, Scotland, through Expedia. After he finished the transaction online, a window popped up on his computer screen warning him that some international car rental agencies do not rent vehicles to older drivers. 8o 9^h_ijef^[h “That just about ;bb_ej floored me,” he says. “I can understand that some older people probably shouldn’t be driving, but honestly, I am not one of them.” Chang, an engineer based in Chicago, has the reverse problem: When he called his travel agency, he was told that his car rental company, Budget, added an underage fee. It doesn’t rent to drivers younger than 21, and renters younger than 25 have to pay a surcharge.
Budget is one company that places age restrictions on who can rent cars.
When Chang picked up the vehicle in Buffalo, Budget tacked an $80 fee onto his bill. A quirk of the auto rental business? Hardly. Other parts of the travel industry, from airlines to hotels, routinely segment their customers by age. The experiences of White and Chang underscore an often overlooked detail for anyone traveling: Age matters more than you might think. The subject of age is a touchy one for car rental companies, according to Sharon Faulkner, the executive director of the American Car Rental Association. Companies don’t have formal age limits in the U.S. because they would violate discrimination
laws. “But they do for the underage driver, citing insurance regulations,” she adds. If you’re renting a car, it’s difficult to get around the rules. To make sure you’re not affected, call your car rental company before you pick up your vehicle. When White called the rental location, he was told there was no age limit. It may save you money, but more often, your age will be used as an excuse to charge you more, or deny you a service to which you should have access.
