Both campaigns sharpened their critique of the other’s Medicare policies in recent days as the already acrimonious race for the White House reached a new level. Romney’s running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, on Saturday told seniors in Florida that he sees parallels with Europe’s debt crisis that cut seniors’ benefits and warned the same could happen in the United States.

Campaigning Saturday in New Hampshire, Obama said that Romney would tear apart Medicare.

As Obama and Romney spent Sunday attending church with their families, advisers from both campaigns sparred on talk shows.

TV interviewers pressed Romney aides to explain how the GOP ticket can restore Obama’s proposed $716 billion cut in Medicare spending’s growth over 10 years without worsening the program’s projected shortfall in funding. Moderators also noted that Ryan originally joined Obama in backing the proposal.

Akin’s Abortion Remark Draws Fire GOP Senate nominee says conception rare in ‘legitimate rapes’ Ij$ Bek_i Rep. Todd Akin, the newly christened GOP Senate nominee in Missouri, said in an interview airing Sunday that “legitimate rape” rarely causes pregnancy.

Explaining his no-exceptions policy on abortions, Akin was asked why he opposes abortion even when the pregnancy is the result of rape.

“First of all, from what I understand from doctors, [pregnancy from rape] is really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV in a clip posted to YouTube by the Democratic super PAC American Bridge. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

8WYaijeho This month, Rep. Todd Akin won the state’s Republican U.S. Senate primary by a comfortable margin of victory. During the primary, Akin enhanced his standing with TV ads in which former Arkansas governor and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee praised him as “a courageous conservative.” Akin also has a longestablished base among evangelical Christians, and was endorsed in the primary by more than 100 pastors. Akin added: “But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.”

Akin issued a statement Sunday afternoon saying he misspoke.

“In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it’s clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for

the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year,” he said. “I recognize that abortion, and particularly in the case of rape, is a very emotionally charged issue. But I believe deeply in the protection of all life and I do not believe that harming another innocent victim is the right course of action.”

Akin’s statement threatens to recast a Senate race in which he starts as the favorite, but national

Republicans are concerned about his ability to execute a winning strategy. Akin won the GOP nomination two weeks ago — a result that Democrats hailed as a potential game-changer in a tough race for them.

Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., and national Democrats actually spent money in the GOP primary to help get Akin through it. That strategy, at least in this case, appears to be paying dividends.

McCaskill said she was outraged

by Akin’s claim.

“It is beyond comprehension that someone can be so ignorant about the emotional and physical trauma brought on by rape,” McCaskill said in a statement.

As he toured the globe to highlight the disclosures, two women accused him of sex offenses during a trip to Sweden. Assange has said the sex with the women was consensual and denied wrongdoing but has fought off efforts to return him to Sweden for questioning for two years.

Ecuador’s president, Rafael Correa, granted Assange asylum Thursday, and he remains out of reach of British police while in the embassy. Britain says if he steps outside, he will be detained and sent to Sweden.

Assange praised Ecuador on Sunday as “a courageous Latin American nation” that “took a stand for justice” in offering him sanctuary. He claimed to have won support from a host of Latin American nations — including Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Mexico and Argentina. Of those five, however, only Argentina has endorsed Ecuador’s decision to grant asylum.

The WikiLeaks founder gave no indication of how he believes the stalemate over his future may be resolved, though he said he hoped to be “reunited soon” with his two children.

Former Spanish judge Baltasar Garzon, who is representing Assange, said Sunday that Ecuador could consider making an appeal to the International Court of Justice in the Hague to compel Britain to grant Assange safe passage out of the country.

Disability advocates for the region say Metro’s plan to make SmarTrip cards more accessible to riders with new vending machines at every rail station falls short in one crucial area: They will not be particularly accessible to those with limited vision.

The new machines, which are scheduled to make their debut Sept.

1, have no audio feature. Riders who are blind or have impaired vision or those with cognitive impairments may find them difficult, if not impossible, to use, disability advocates said.

“In this day in time I can’t imagine how … the Metro system [is] purchasing things and then putting them, installing them and paying for them and they are not accessible to everyone,” said Denise Rush, who is blind and serves on Metro’s Accessibility Advisory Committee. “It is not acceptable. It is ludicrous.”

Transit users with special needs said they already experience intimidating trips in a system known for its chronically broken escalators and elevators, poor lighting in the platforms and poorly functioning loudspeakers that make it difficult to hear the next-stop announcements on trains and buses.

“Traveling with partial sight is very difficult as it is,” said Barbara Milleville, president of National Capital Citizens With Low Vision.

She said the lack of accessibility can be discouraging to those who depend on public transit.

Metro officials said that, starting in the fall, the new SmarTrip dispensers will be equipped with Braille decals. But advocates for the visually impaired said many people with limited sight don’t know

Braille and would benefit from an audible prompt similar to the ones in automated teller machines.

Under the Americans With Disabilities Act, Metro must provide equal access to public transit for those with disabilities.

The transit system also encourages nearly 6,000 people with a disability to use its rail and bus services instead of the more costly door-to-door MetroAccess service.

“We sit here, we talk and we talk and we talk about why are all these people using paratransit and not using the fixed-rate system,” said Deborah Brown, president of the National Federation of the Blind, a regular Metro user and member of the AAC. “And then we go and do something like this. This is why.”

O’Malley, McDonnell argue about taxes on ‘Meet the Press’ MWi^_d]jed Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, a Democrat, and Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, a Republican, sparred over Mitt Romney’s tax returns, Medicare and the tone of the presidential campaign on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday.

Their appearance came a week after McDonnell, who’d often been mentioned as a potential No. 2 on Romney’s ticket, helped the former Massachusetts governor squire his new vice presidential pick, Paul Ryan, around Virginia. O’Malley managed to rub a little salt into McDonnell’s wound as he defended the Democrats’ interest in Romney’s tax returns.

“I know when reviewing tax returns of vice presidential hopefuls like Governor McDonnell or,

indeed, Paul Ryan, he asked for more than one year of tax returns,” O’Malley said.

Moderator Dav id Gregor y pressed O’Malley for any evidence that Romney had not paid all legally required taxes. O’Malley blamed Romney for making his returns an issue — “the big secret of the campaign” — because he had released just two years’ worth.

“We know that he has been engaged in tax-avoidance schemes with offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands and the Bahamas,” O’Malley said. “It’s not unlawful, but it is tax avoidance. At a time when our country needs everyone’s help to accelerate our nation’s recovery, he’s hiding his money.”

Robert Pattinson was nearing the end of shooting the last “Twilight” film, concluding a chapter of his life that had picked him out of near obscurity and was preparing to spit him out … where exactly? “Twilight” had made him extravagantly famous, but his next steps were entirely uncertain.

“Out of the blue,” he says, came the script for “Cosmopolis” from David Cronenberg, the revered Canadian director of psychological thrillers

(“Videodrome,” “Eastern Promises”) that often pursue the spirit through the body. Pattinson, having never met or spoken to Cronenberg, did a little research: He looked him up on Rotten Tomatoes “and it was like 98 percent approval,” he says.

“It was like: OK, that’s my next job,” Pattinson says.

Pattinson now has the unenviable task of releasing his most ambitious movie, his most adult role, into a media storm that instinct would suggest should be run from like a pack of werewolves. Shia LaBeouf told MTV News that he will be participating in actual, not simulated, sex in the upcoming film “The Nymphomaniac,” directed by Lars von Trier.
