Smugglers’ guests rave about all there is to do, and often return time and time again to cover the sheer breadth of programming we offer. A few days is simply not enough. Here at Smuggs, we believe that when it comes to family entertainment, there can always be more. We’ve taken that notion in this summer’s edition of Explore Smuggs and highlighted just that — more. Inside, you’ll find information on new programs, and lots to do not only here at the resort, but in the surrounding area as well. Read about exciting new educational (and fun) programs focused around Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math from outdoor educator Marissa Saltzman. Find out where the coolest and closest places for a natural dip are, or use the guide to plan your next family waterfall portrait with Sarah Wojcik’s story on local swimming holes. The smell of a pine forest mixed with crisp mountain air. The warmth of the sun on your skin and cool water tickling your toes. The sounds of a babbling stream, a roaring waterfall, and the laughter of those you love. These are the ingredients for a perfect summer day in Vermont. by Sarah Wojcik

I remember the first time someone took me to a swimming hole in Vermont on a hot, steamy day. I was like a kid at Christmas opening a magical present. Usually located on a dirt road, and down a winding forested path, these magical places emerge out of the woods like something out of a storybook. Whether adorned by waterfalls, glorious forests or massive rock sculptures, they are always feasts for the eyes and splendor for the senses. So close your eyes. Now jump in! It’s time for a sensory tour of the best just-off-the-road swimming holes in the heart of Vermont – all within 30 minutes from Smugglers’ Notch - your home base for fun. Let’s start by heading northwest on Vermont Route 108 towards Jeffersonville from Smugglers’ village. About 4 miles from the resort lies Brewster River Gorge. This destination offers hiking, beautiful views, and swimming in several locations above and below the gorge. Take a sharp right off 108 onto Canyon Road, pass the iconic Grist Mill Covered Bridge and you’ll find parking on your left. Cross the bridge to access the trails and take in views below and above the falls that flow through the gorge. The falls themselves are best viewed from the top, and wading pools can be found above and below the falls as you walk along the river. The open, sunny, shallow pools at the bottom of the falls provide hours of fun for families with young kids. PRO TIPS: Be prepared. Wear hiking shoes for the steep trail to the top of the gorge. Map it. Plug Brewster River Gorge into your map app ahead of time, as this destination is conveniently pinned, but you may have a hard time finding service while on the road near the Notch. (Journey’s End, Moss Glen, and Bingham Falls can also be found on GPS, which makes for stress-free finds.) While Brewster River Gorge is a magnificent spot, if you’re looking for a bit more of a splash, head down the road to Jeff Falls. Like many spots in Vermont, it can be referred to locally by a different name — in this case, Irish Springs. Just a few hundred feet down Route 108 (about a quarter mile south of town), you’ll find a small pull off on the east side of the road, and a trail leading to the swimming holes. Several small, and some even semi-secluded pools will invite your small group to bathe in the crystal clean mountain water. PRO TIPS: Leave no trace. This destination is graciously open to the public despite being privately owned. Keep it quiet, clean, and be respectful so everyone can continue to enjoy this gem. Keep it cozy. The pools at Jeff Falls are small and can easily become crowded. This is a place to enjoy a quiet time with a few family members, a partner, or one or two good friends – not a big group.

Next, we’ll head to the town of Johnson, an artsy college hub about 15 minutes east of Jeffersonville, where we’ll find Journey’s End. Now your journey surely doesn’t need to end here, but it’s a great place to dip your toes into a cool mountain stream and enjoy views of undulating waterfalls with locals and visitors alike. From Jeffersonville take Route 15 East for 7.5 miles before making a left onto Foote Brook Road. Head 1.5 miles and make a left onto Plot Road. Journey’s End will be on your right about a half mile up the road. PRO TIP: Bring your fishing pole and binoculars. Protected by the Vermont River Conservancy, 2,500 feet of Foote Brook is accessible to anglers and home to large population of top-quality trout. The protected 25 acres of surrounding land are also home to hundreds of beautiful songbirds.
Bingham Falls, Stowe
After cooling off with hip locals in Johnson, head southeast on Route 15 toward Hyde Park. From there take a right onto Cady Falls Road to Stagecoach Road and look for a dirt pull off on the right marked with a large rock. Follow the path beyond the rock to Terrill Gorge Falls. A short half mile hike ends with a lovely shallow but wide waterfall that flows into a large and glorious oval swimming hole that spans nearly 35 feet in width. This gem sees fewer crowds than some of its neighbors, which is a welcome surprise. PRO TIP: Look up. Watch out for cliff jumpers here. While the activity is not recommended, it is a popular spot for thrill seekers.

Our final two spots are in Stowe, VT, the first being just 10 minutes south of Terrill Gorge. Hop onto 100 South, take a sharp left on Randolph Rd and follow signs for Moss Glen Falls. These falls might be the most popular in the state and the swimming areas around it are vast enough for large groups of people. The magnificent 125 feet of cascading waterfalls is captured on film and canvas by many, so be sure to bring your camera along. PRO TIP: Explore for more. While the falls may be the main attraction here, explore the waterway for fun places to splash around with the family. Our final destination is the beloved Bingham Falls which lies just south of the entrance of Smugglers’ Notch State Park. From Moss Glen Falls make your way towards the town of Stowe and then head north up Route 108 towards Smugglers’ Notch. A few miles north of town you’ll see roadside parking areas on both sides of the road and a sign on the right, at the trailhead (if you reach Stowe Mountain Resort, you’ve gone too far). A short, but rocky hike will lead you to the breathtaking teal waters of Bingham Falls and a rock staircase leading down to one of the prettiest deep pools in the area. PRO TIP: Take a detour. On your way to Bingham Falls, meander through the bucolic village of Stowe and take in the art and craft brewery scene before your last stop on the tour.
YOU MADE IT! After a fun-filled splash day, visiting six of Vermont’s best mountain waterways, enjoy a gorgeous and meandering drive through the narrow and stunning Smugglers’ Notch (only open in the summer) and head on “home” to Smuggs. This tour brought you full circle in a glorious day of swimming hole hopping in Vermont. Make sure to book a reservation at the Hearth & Candle for an early dinner on this day. You’ll need to refuel and plan the next splash-filled day at Vermont’s favorite playground, Smugglers’ Notch. I recommend playing in one of the mountain reservoirs, or seeking thrills on the Giant Rapid River Ride at the Mountainside Water Playground. WHO KNEW VACATIONING COULD BE SO COMPETITIVE? Well, it’s not all that competitive, but the prizes sure are sweet; like hundreds of dollars sweet. So, what exactly are we talking about here? The Big Smuggle is a family-oriented race throughout our resort village, that provides a fun challenge in a way that’s accessible to just about everyone. Using maps and clues provided, groups of 3-5 people hit multiple stations where they are met with unique challenges. Using a combination of mental and physical skills, teams aim to accumulate as much gold bullion as possible, in the shortest amount of time.

“…ONE!” There was utter silence, a quiet thud, and then immense cheering.

gg Drop was one of our new STEAM program additions last summer; and it was about much more than the simple task of dropping raw eggs and hoping for their survival. Instead, it was about creativity and brainstorming, critical thinking and careful planning, testing and assessing, collaboration and perseverance. In the end, it mattered less about whether the eggs cracked or not and more about being able to articulate your thought process and ideas, offer meaningful feedback and suggestions to other groups, and feeling excited to think beyond the triumphs and comic crashes. It was about the camaraderie of a group learning together. STEAM is the increasingly popular acronym that many schools and other educational organizations are using to heighten attention to programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. STEAM programming emphasizes the way topics in these areas are taught, and these methods align perfectly with our educational philosophies at Smugglers’. At the heart of the best education is engagement. For kids (and adults!), the more hands-on learning is, the more meaningful and lasting it will be. Smugglers’ has been incorporating experiential learning into programming for decades. Whether you’re building pirate ships for the Raingutter Regatta or honing your mountain bike skills in our clinics, the focus is always on mixing fun and education. Smugglers’ programs are designed to fuel inquisitiveness, encourage collaboration, and instill pride in a participant’s knowledge and skills. STEAM programs take the same excitement and fun and blend in a more concentrated focus on specific educational content. For example, let’s look again at the Egg Drop activity. While it is certainly fun to design a package to protect a raw egg from a fall, it’s an even better opportunity to get some first-hand experience with the engineering design process. Start by exploring the concepts of gravity and impact. Make connections to everyday designs to better understand ways that engineers have already addressed impact and safety. Extend these ideas to our project constraints. Brainstorm and draw blueprints for our own designs before groups actually build them. Mix in a healthy dose of math with an imaginary budget for supplies and now we have an activity that integrates science, technology, engineering, art, and math. STEAM activities at Smuggs are primarily process driven rather than product driven. way of approaching the challenges. When contributing to the groups, some kids may draw primarily from their own experience and creativity. Other kids may contribute more formal knowledge. Together, they create the ultimate team. Learning to share and build on ideas is an important part of our activities. Additionally, the discoveries they make at Smuggs may give them practical insight into topics they will encounter later in the classroom. Our hope is that they will feel more connected to the content because of this hands-on experience. With the popularity and excitement we saw for our STEAM programs last summer, we are excited to go full STEAM ahead this year. In addition to the four Family Events introduced last summer, we will be offering three days of a STEAM Specialty Camp, designed for kids looking for a full day of creative problem solving and awesome learning. Each program day will be focused around a different theme: Feathered, Furry & Fierce (animal adaptations and survival), Build It and Break It (engineering and physics), and Earth, Fire and Water (environmental science and stewardship). The day will be broken up into several program sections, each connecting to the day’s theme.
Field Exploration: This is the opportunity for groups to hike out on the trails and explore the ecosystems in our Vermont woods. While groups will set out with driving questions to focus their explorations, this is really an activity time focused around child directed learning. With so much emphasis in a traditional classroom on reaching content milestones, we are excited to have an opportunity to let kids’ interests and ponderings guide our teaching. In other words, we might head into the woods to look for evidence of engineering in the animal world; we might be really excited to search for bird nests. But then we happen across a beaver pond and suddenly the kids start snowballing questions: Are there beavers still in this pond? How long have they been here? What did it look like before the beavers got here? So, as educators, we adapt. We teach to their interests and are still able to make it applicable to our day’s theme on engineering. Together, we build answers to their questions. We look for clues to interpret the landscape, apply knowledge they might already have and present new information in dynamic ways. While they’ve had fun learning in the woods, it will matter more to them because they asked the questions, made the connections, and directed their own learning.
Group Activities: These activities and challenges are designed to draw on the collective strengths of the entire mixed age group. With an emphasis on teamwork and collaboration, these projects will blend creative imagination with critical thinking. Focus Activities: Each day, campers will have a choice between two activities that thoroughly explore a topic with even more hands-on-investigation. For example, on our Feathered, Furry and Fierce day, campers will choose between two Focus Activities that explore how adaptations best suit animals to their environment. Ever wonder how squid move? How do they eat? What would eat them? What defenses do they have against their predators? There’s no

better way to investigate these sorts of questions and countless others than by checking out the external and internal anatomy of a squid through dissection! Or perhaps you’d rather choose to learn all about owls and then dissect an owl pellet to figure out what they ate. Focus Activities are dynamic and engaging, blending education and fun in ways that are meaningful to the kids.
Ultimately, our STEAM programs are about learning from each other and then figuring out where to go next with the new ideas. Just as it’s exciting to have kids and adults come to these programs with different background knowledge and understandings, it’s also exciting to take these experiences home with us and connect them to our lives in other ways. So whether

NOTCH the next generation
and the next ... and the next ...
I’m sitting at the camp manager’s desk reviewing numbers for the upcoming week when the phone rings. Answering it—admittedly disappointed I may be pulled in a different work direction than I want—I’m greeted by the voice of a nice young lady with a rather unique inquiry. “Um, hi. I’m curious if you have any old photos from Summer Fun University Camps back in the nineties,” she said. Proceeding with much skepticism, I asked a few followup questions. The young lady explained that she met her now-fiancé here at Smugglers’ back when they were little weebles-a-wobbling. Over their tenure as campers, they would look forward to yearly summertime reunions in the Heart of Vermont, building on their friendship before eventually becoming engaged as adults. Of course, my followup question, “Will you be bringing your kids to Smugglers’ should you choose to have some?” There’s something magical about making a regular pilgrimage to Smugglers’. Perhaps it’s the senses that are triggered upon arrival. The smell of the fresh Green Mountain air, sounds of campers playing in the pools as you walk around the lovely resort campus, the feeling of cool mountain water rushing over your feet as you enjoy a maple creemee from the babbling brook behind the mini golf course. I’ve literally seen the feeling of relief envelop people as they arrive back to the Welcome Sign from a long hiatus at home; back to their happy place. The only thing better is seeing that feeling handed down to the next generation. With Smugglers’ deep-rooted history in offering family vacations, it’s no wonder there are so many generations who simultaneously kick back and enjoy quality time together with us. Take the Dloss family, for example. Full Owners and loyal Smugglers since 1977, they stumbled upon their future with the Resort after booking a vacation for themselves and their three daughters during Christmas over 40 years ago. Enticed by the convenience of condominium life on the side of a ski slope, they lined their finances up and purchased a condo two months later. As the girls grew older, the family grew too, warranting the purchase of the unit next door. Visiting every summer and winter thereafter, the family continued to grow. Now, they presently own five Smugglers’ condominiums throughout their family of 23. They have only missed one July 4th celebration since 1978. A testament to the value of owning a piece of #smuggslove in the Heart of Vermont.

Whether the tradition is to visit annually for one specific holiday, multiple seasons, or the whole summer, there is a constant that remains true; countless families visit Smugglers’ time and time again — it becomes a second home for so many. Some have bought their own piece of our community, and some have shared those pieces with generations to come. Gifts are always given. The gift of first times — first trip to Vermont, first time on skis and boards, first glimpses of a night sky littered with stars; there are so many first time opportunities here at Smugglers’. Smugglers like Emma Tarp have been visiting since they were infants. In a recent Facebook comment, Emma mentioned, “My family started going [to Smugglers’] in 1995, when I was just one month old! We’ve visited in summers, springs, and ski seasons, and brought cousins, aunts, uncles, fiancés, and new spouses along for the ride! Looking forward to bringing future children and friends for the rest of our lives!” It’s that last line that gets me. “Bringing future children and friends for the rest of our lives.”
Long time Smuggler and EquiShare Owner, Devon Garbus shared with us, “First trip was in 1991. I was 10 and my little brother was 5. We’ve been going every year since, and Bruce Morrissey documented all of it for us! Brought my 11 year old daughter and 1 year old this last season.” Speaking from experience, the joy one feels when sharing our love for this place is unexplainable with words. It’s something I always heard about but never had the chance to experience first-hand until recently. As someone who stumbled upon Smugglers’ 16 years ago shortly after moving to Vermont, I thought it would be fun to work here for a summer. I ended up sticking around, knowing that one day I
could share this place with my family, but a one-off trip sometime in the future simply wouldn’t cut it. Now, my 4 year old daughter has spent thousands upon thousands of hours on the beautiful Smugglers’ campus. Starting in TREASURES at just 8 weeks old, she’s been to the top of every mountain on her snowboard in wintertime, and as an aspiring hiker, working towards the same goal in the summer. Perhaps most valuable to me as a parent — the few minutes of joy I get to experience when we pass each other around the Village. Those few minutes equate to more happiness than my heart can even hold. I hope you, too, can experience this joy if you already haven’t. Just like the thousands of other Smugglers’ who have and will share this joy with generations to come. Get Your Music Kicks On or Off Resort, You Don’t Have to Travel Far to Find a Note-Perfect Evening for You and Your Crew… The rhythm here is different—marked by peaks and valleys and seasonal extremes—it’s almost symphonic… Winters are long, no doubt, but they’re also sweet and sublime, punctuated by the silences between the swoosh of skis and slicing of snowboards, the promise of the crescendo becoming more and more real with every frosty breath, with every new turn of every gleaming white trail… And, while it sometimes seems like the mountains will be buried in snow forever, eventually and inevitably, spring happens (usually sometime between the last crazy rider falling face-first into the water during the Pond Skim and Memorial Day.) Snow changes to rain, rain melts snow and rivers flood, the dirt roads turn to rutted mud and from the mud, flowers don’t so much bloom as they do burst. It’s the same with people. As showers turn to sun-drenched hours, those evenings sitting close to the fire to stay warm seem far away. Beanies are switched out for baseball caps, thick sweaters and sub-zero boots packed away to make room for t-shirts and hiking shoes… To say that this collective ritual is one we partake in happily is an understatement—by any measure it’s more accurate to talk about tears of joy, cartwheels in the street, and an enthusiasm that’s usually reserved for zealots or fanatics who’ve had way too much caffeine. The rhythm here is different. Again. The orchestra’s still playing, but they’ve traded in their violins for fiddles, their cellos and violas for stand up basses and electric guitars, cymbals for drum kits and their brass for… well, okay, there’s still brass, but there are more than a few banjos in the mix now, too. Days are spent exploring the Notch, finding new favorite swimming holes or lounging around the pool… Evenings are made for grilling, throwing back the craft brew with a neighbor or two (hundred) and letting the kids run wild in the open air to get the excess energy out before bed… And, if you know where to go, you can find live music, much of it free, to fill that open air.
