WE’RE HAPPY YOU’RE SPENDING YOUR FAMILY VACATION WITH US, AND OUR GOAL IS TO MAKE THIS YOUR FAMILY’S BEST VACATION EVER. To meet that goal, we listen carefully to our guests’ feedback and take their insights into consideration for improvements and adjustments to the Smuggs vacation experience. One of the methods we value as a way to receive your feedback is our How Do You Like Us survey. In reviewing the survey comments made by last Summer’s visitors, we noticed reviews mentioning how easy a Smuggs vacation is. For instance, how it’s easy to work with our reservations staff to plan your getaway, and easy to find activities for everyone to enjoy. That little word, easy, became the inspiration for the theme of Explore Smuggs this Summer. A quick look — an easy read! — at what you’ll find in this issue … Tips from two of our wellness pros on easing from daily life into blissful vacation mode. The ease of choosing an adventure that will engage your family in “Ride, Zip, or Fly!” Smuggs vacation hacks — enhance your experience with tips from our experts on what to do and see. The scoop on the sport of disc golf — easy to enjoy here at Smuggs with supportive instructors and two beautiful courses on site — and junior athletes excelling in this sport. And last but not least: Chow Time and the Events Calendar, which make selecting a restaurant or an event an easy decision! I do have one assignment for you — an easy one, of course! Please let us know if there’s something we can do to support a relaxing, fun, and comfortable experience for you and your family. Thank you for choosing Smuggs for your family vacation.

REMOVE core from tomatoes; cut in half crosswise and gently squeeze out as many seeds and juice as will come out easily. Cut into thin slices. DIVIDE pizza dough into 4 equal balls; on floured work su ace, roll/stretch each ball out into approximate 6-inch circle. Bring dough and toppings to grill. PLACE two dough circles on heated side of grill; when dough is puffed and browned on underside, about 2 minutes, turn over with tongs and cook until second side is lightly colored, about 1 minute longer. Return to unheated side of grill (or reduce heat on one-burner gas grill to very low). Cover grill and cook pizzas until cheese is melted, about 3 minutes. Picture this scene. A car packed to the gills with kids and gear creeps along in the afternoon rush, caught up in the traffic of the traditional summer vacation exodus. The line of cars moves along the highway in a slow crawl, abandoning the bustle of daily life for the peace and relaxation they’ll find in the Green Mountains of Vermont. Despite the verdant oasis — and all the fun — that awaits, making the transition from hectic and harried to mellow and magical can be challenging for parents and kids alike. Today’s families tend to operate at Mach-3, running between work and school, social engagements and extra-curriculars. But shifting into vacation mode without extra stress is possible and Smugglers’ offers plenty of activities to help families start their hard-earned vacations off on the right foot.

NATURE NURTURES Time spent exploring the abundant nature around the resort offers an excellent segue from daily life to vacation mode. Whether that means heading out for a guided walk to learn about native flora and fauna, paddling a scenic stretch of the Lamoille River while searching for busy beavers, or trekking a trail alongside a fleet of furry llamas, playing outside is a great way for everyone in the family to slow down and reconnect. For a unique experience, go for a stroll with local herbalist Kelley Robie of Horsetail Herbs and learn how common plants and weeds can be turned into rejuvenating balms, tinctures, and teas. “Taking a walk in the woods to identify a new plant can be both rejuvenating and de-stressing,” says Robie. “When we immerse our senses of sight, sound, touch, and smell, it can instantly transport us to the present moment.”

Top Tip: Resist the impulse to dive headlong into the activities guide the moment you arrive. Instead, change gears slowly and do something as a family that engages the senses and allows everyone to become fully immersed in the present moment.

Mindfulness Matters Meditation and yoga are another great way to ease into vacation mode, and trying one of these activities, even for the first time, can be a lot of fun for everyone in the family. “Our guests lead very busy lives,” says Lizbeth Maris, the resort’s longtime health and wellness guru. “The yoga and meditation series we teach encourages people — from kids to adults — to pause, take a breath, and really start relaxing into the Smuggs mindframe.” One of the resort’s most popular activities is the weekly yoga wike, which offers a mix of physical activity and mindful reflection. “Getting out of constant chatter mode is amazing,” says Maris, “We listen to the birdsong in the woods and point out Vermont wildflowers along the way. The kids end up loving it — especially the last bit up Rum Runners’. They like to get up there really fast.”

Mixing backyard botanicals with common ingredients to create natural body products.

A World of Wellness Few experiences are as relaxing and rejuvenating as massage and Smugglers’ Mountain Massage Center offers a host of relaxing body treatments — from deep-tissue rub downs to Vermont maple sugar scrubs and teen tune-ups — for everyone in the family. An especially blissful way to make the vacation transition is an incondo aromatherapy foot massage. “It’s a foot soak and reflexology massage on the feet that uses hot stones and aromatherapy,” says Maris, who learned the practice during winters spent in Asia. “Just the essential oils are hugely relaxing and help people get into the moment.” For a bit of do-it-yourself herbal pampering, Kelley Robie also teaches guests how to transform basic backyard botanicals into luxurious, natural body products. “Both classes offer a sensory sensation,” explains Robie, “with lots of different textures, colors, and

smells, which can immediately make you forget your troubles and ease you into relaxation.” So this summer, once the groceries are unpacked and the kids have claimed their bunks, take a deep breath and settle in for a bit. Resist the urge to head full steam into the resort’s cornucopia of activities. There’s plenty of time for karaoke, poolside movies, bingo, and gaga ball. Instead, ease into vacation mode slowly, with a bit more purpose. Doing so will only make time spent at Smugglers’ that much more meaningful for everyone. Gina DeCaprio Vercesi is a New York-based freelance journalist who writes about adventures on land, water, and snow for a host of national and regional publications. Although she frequently finds solace in the abundant natural beauty of Vermont, her relaxation game could use some work. Gina lives in a friendly village on the Hudson River with her husband, three daughters, and a very good dog.

Horseback riding is an adventure that riders of all ages and levels are able to enjoy. It is an experience that can span generations. Lajoie Stables is located less than 10 miles from Smugglers’. At the stable, kids as young as two, and other family members all the way through grandma and grandpa, can saddle up and go for a ride. From the moment you leave the stables astride one of Lajoie’s gentle giants you will immediately feel yourselves relax. Horseback riding is a great way to unplug from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Seasoned guides will take you on trails through the woods and open fields where Vermont wildlife is abundant. You may see turkeys, fox, or deer. This low-key adventure connects everyone to nature. Jennifer Lynn Thompson, a previous Lajoie Stables guest, described her outing: “Amazing! The trails, the beautiful scenery, the calmness in the horses and the staff. I can’t wait to go again.” Back at the stable, younger kids will love to visit with Lajoie’s miniature donkeys, Chippy and Vegas. The stable also has other animals too, like freerange chickens, goats, and several dogs who love attention from children. Whether you choose a quiet, relaxed ride, or a slightly faster paced ride, the stable has horses suited for every pace. Horseback riding with Lajoie Stables is a carefree way for your family to spend quality time together. Lajoie Stables Lajoiestables.com • 802-644-5347

“We had an absolute blast!! Not only are the zip-lines fun, the tour guides make it the much more laughable!” – Facebook review

For a high flying thrill plan a visit to Vermont’s largest adventure park, located just a few minutes’ drive from the resort. ArborTrek Canopy Adventures is comprised of three main areas that host a zip line tour, a treetop obstacle course, and a climbing adventure. With activities that range from serene to extreme, the ArborTrek experience is great for families that like to be active together.

The treetop obstacle course is designed to challenge. It is made up of three levels that range from easy to arduous. Whether you are swinging through the trees, climbing cargo nets, or crossing a wobbly bridge, you will always be tethered to a flexible lifeline system. This personal safety system uses SmartBelay technology so that you are consistently connected to the cables.

Take to the trees for a zip line canopy tour like no other. This fully-guided activity combines breathtaking scenery with the rush of a high speed ride. Eight zip lines soar through the air over the sun-dappled woodlands of Vermont. You will cross over running streams on sky bridges and rappel down to the forest floor.

Designed for families with kids as young as four, the ArborTrek Jr. course includes twenty-two traverses and access to the climbing area. ArborTrek president Mike Smith frequently remarks that “parents find it extremely rewarding to see their kids take on a challenge and conquer their fears!”

The zip line canopy tour is gravity-fed making it the least strenuous of the three ArborTrek offerings. Guides handle all equipment transfers from one zip to the next and it requires only a minimum level of exertion to control your zip speed. This activity is perfect for kids ages 8 and older and their grandparents who want to do things with their children and grandchildren. Kids will be able to whoop it up with Grandma the whole way down.

While at Smuggs, why not take the plunge with your family and try the coolest new sport on water — Flyboarding! Take a few minutes’ ride on the free resort shuttle to Bootleggers’ Basin to be elevated into the air on your own personal water craft. Flyboarding uses jet propulsion to push water through a hose, propelling the flyboard into the air. Flyers can turn and control their height by leaning side to side and front to back. Flyboarding is not as difficult as you might think. Bruce Morrissey, the manager of Flyboard of VT, will tell you “that it is easier than learning to water ski and most people are able to get up in the air after the first few tries.” Plus, Flyboarding on a calm pond is better than trying it for the first time in another location, such as the ocean. Not only is the water warmer but the Bootleggers’ tends to be peaceful and still. This is a great activity for parents and teens. Flyboard of VT has flown everyone from ages 13 to 75 and everywhere in between. You don’t need to be an avid adventurer or even in tip top physical shape to try it. All participants wear a helmet and life jacket, and a patient certified instructor monitors your every move. You will start out by being elevated abover the water only as high as your own height

so that you feel comfortable. You can work your way up to the maximum of 45 feet if you are so inclined. Instructors will coach you so that you can learn to turn, do circles, and even do a few tricks. Evidence that this will be the best part of your Smuggs vacation can be found in recent TripAdvisor reviews, like the review posted by a mom from Winter Park, Florida: “Our sons had a great time flyboarding! They were all able to do it during the first lesson. One of the highlights of our trip to Smugglers’ Notch!” Flyboard of VT will even capture your family memories for you with photos and an edited drone video so that you can show all your friends when you get back home. There is a strong chance you will get hooked and be back for more! This summer, the United States Junior Disc Golf Championship (USJDGC) arrives at Smugglers’ — borne from a collaboration forged by a premier disc golf facility, a leading youth organization, and good ol’ childhood zeal.

O THE AI ST

Growing up, I loved playing sports. It all started in my neighborhood. I grew up on a street that ended in a cul-desac, or “The Circle,” as the kids called it. That’s where we would meet every day after school to group up and start the business of playing. Depending on the day and the weather, we might start a game of pick-up football, baseball, or basketball. Looking back at those carefree days now represents some of the fondest memories of childhood for our neighborhood troupe! It was my best friend Greg and I who took our love of sports to the next level. Even when the other kids weren’t up for outdoor antics, we were. Countless hours were spent playing catch of some sort, whether it was with a baseball, football, or Frisbee. Over the years, the flight of the Frisbee captured my imagination. I loved watching it float through the air. The control I could assert on a throw excited me. I could bend it left, bend it right, rocket a laser beam right to Greg or finesse a toss gently over his head, letting it hang and hover as it drifted down to his waiting arms. Eventually, we started creating our own new games, and Frisbee golf became my favorite of the bunch. It enlivened my mind to design “holes.” From the swing set to the basketball hoop, from the mailbox – around the tree – and to the doghouse, from the porch to the tree fort; our yards turned into a golf course with endless possibilities for new holes. My enjoyment of Frisbee and “frolf” carried over into my days as an overnight camp counselor. I taught hundreds of campers how to throw, and we would all take turns designing holes across the campus. Imagine my shock when in 2009, I found out that Disc Golf was not only an established sport, but one of the fastest growing in the country!

DISCOVER DISC GOLF RATED AS ONE OF THE TOP 5 DISC GOLF DESTINATIONS IN THE WORLD, Smugglers' Disc Golf Center (DGC) is designed for all ages and ability levels.

 BREWSTER RIDGE 18-HOLE DISC GOLF COURSE Rated as one of the top 20 disc golf courses in the country, Brewster Ridge is designed for all ages and ability levels featuring four tee boxes on each hole for beginner, intermediate, advanced, and expert players.

 FOX RUN MEADOWS 18-HOLE DISC GOLF COURSE A much more open course than Brewster Ridge, Fox Run Meadows offers accessibility to those new to the game with beginner tees, but when players step back to the white, blue or gold tees, the challenge gets increasingly difficult.

 VILLAGE 9 DISC GOLF COURSE This 9-hole, par 3 course works its way up the nearby ski trails and back down. Designed to be beginner friendly with shorter, open holes that can be played in 30 minutes! The Village 9 makes it easy to try disc golf for the first time while still being fun for more experienced players.

Home of the 2018 PDGA Pro World Championship! NEW FOR 2018! An expanded Pro Shop and Outdoor Center will be debuting in late July to service all of your disc golf needs! Learn more at: smuggsdiscgolf.com 54 • explore

THE EVOLUTION OF DISC GOLF Nearly identical to traditional golf, disc golf is played with golf discs made specifically for distance, control, and accuracy. The sports share elements – like tees, fairways, and greens; par 3s, 4s & 5s, and disc golf even has different disc molds for putters, midrange, and drivers. Instead of putting a ball into a hole, disc golf competitors throw a disc into a basket elevated on a pole. While “frolf” is played with a Frisbee and targets objects, disc golf is the evolution of the game into a sport – a sport that continues to grow rapidly. By the numbers, disc golf is catching up to its traditional counterpart. There are now more than 2 million disc golfers that play regularly, more than 7,500 courses in the US, and more than 100,000 members of the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA). The PDGA tour has grown rapidly as well, now hosting over 3,500 sanctioned PDGA events contributing to a total purse of over $4.5 million. Over the past six years, I’ve helped to develop the Smuggs Disc Golf Center, which has grown into a premier destination for the disc golfing world. Smugglers’ will be hosting the 2018 PDGA Pro World Championship this fall.

DISC GOLF FOR KIDS Recently, the largest growth segment of disc golf has been on the junior side of the game. More and more American youth are playing disc golf and it shows at Smugglers’. From day one, the resort’s disc golf center was built with youth disc golfers in mind. Not only does it mesh perfectly with the core values of our Resort, but it aligns with my childhood passion and upbringing. Last year the organization Kids Disc Golf (kidsdiscgolf.com) reached out with the opportunity to facilitate and host a top-level national junior competition. Smugglers’ will be hosting these top junior athletes in the sport in August. Kids Disc Golf has been organizing junior-only tournaments for the past three years before turning to creation of a top level competition. I had the chance to sit down with Matt Grayum, the founder of Kids Disc Golf to talk to him about what inspired the creation of the organization, and how this event came about.

A FATHER-SON DISC GOLF DUO As Matt and I talked, it quickly became clear that the love of sports and passion for competition demonstrated by Matt’s son, Hunter Grayum, was the driving force behind the inception and development of Kids Disc Golf. Learning about Hunter and his love for the game harkened back to my own childhood. To me, collaborating on this championship would be fulfilling a vision that was first unearthed playing catch in the yard with my friend Greg, so many years ago. Chatting with Hunter and Matt, it’s plain to see that they love playing disc golf together. “It started out as a simple pastime, but quickly turned into a passion!” Matt said. “I had been playing disc golf for 3 years before my first son Hunter was born.” As Matt’s passion continued to grow for the sport, he began introducing the game of disc golf to his son. When I asked Hunter about his career, he quipped, “I started playing when I was 1 year old. Dad says I was out on the course before I could walk!” Matt explained, “It began with Hunter just enjoying the game of finding each basket on the course. Hunter truly enjoys the time we get to spend together walking the courses. A lot of courses utilize fields and wooded areas that allow you to enjoy the outdoors together.” Hunter’s love for the game developed quickly and he asked his dad when he could play in a competitive tournament. While there were tournaments happening every weekend, there were none specifically offering youth divisions. Matt says, “I couldn’t bring myself to continually tell him he had to wait until he was older, so I organized a kid’s disc golf tournament.” The first tournament Matt directed was in the fall of 2015. They

56 • explore

saw more than 40 kids ages 12 years old or younger compete at the first tournament. Hunter achieved 2nd place in his division at that tournament. He was 5 years old competing in the 7 years old and younger division. “I left that tournament experience smiling and energized to do this again for the kids!” said Matt. Fast forward to today. Both Matt and Hunter, who is now 7 years old, are enjoying success in the world of disc golf. Hunter has received a sponsorship from Innova Champion Discs. He has been invited onto Team Innova by his hero and 4X World Champion disc golfer, Paul McBeth, who will be competing on the same courses as Hunter this fall, but for the Pro World Championship. Matt has turned his idea of providing competitive disc golf opportunities for kids into a full blown mission by inviting his older brother Josh to join the team and successfully hosting two state championship series in Maine and Massachusetts last year. “We look forward to continued growth in the disc golf world, specifically for the youth, and will continue to press forward until there are competitive opportunities for every kid,” Matt said. Hunter will be competing at the PDGA Junior World Championships in Emporia, Kansas in July, and at the USJDGC in August here at Smuggs. Personally, I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of it, and will enjoy living vicariously through Hunter as he lives the dream of chasing a youth disc golf title. Jeff Spring is the Director of Disc Golf & Mountain Biking at Smugglers’ Notch Resort. He’s overseen the design and development of Smugglers’ Notch Disc Golf Center and is excited for the debut of the brand new Outdoor Center and Pro Shop this July, in preparation for the USJDGC & the PDGA Pro World Championship. Jeff loves to play disc golf and mountain bike, and feels lucky to be able to work in the industry he loves so much.
