STUDENTS IN ACTION written by: Karyle Green, Ed.D., Principal, Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. HS
In my first article, I talked about the service generosity of our students and staff. Here’s an example Submitted by Emily Brooks, President of our Cocoa Beach Students in Action (edited for length): Early on the Wednesday morning before Thanksgiving, volunteers arrived at Cocoa Beach High School to deliver Thanksgiving meals to community members in need. Every meal was complete with Thanksgiving essentials, including turkey, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans, cranberries, and pumpkin pie. Based on their level of need, some families even received hot Thanksgiving meals, donated by Coastal Produce. Twenty-five families benefited from the project, allowing many students of Cocoa Beach High School to enjoy the holiday with full stomachs. The project started as an idea from Cocoa Beach High School’s Students In Action service club. The original plan was to raise money in order to fund a Thanksgiving meal for one family. However, the project grew as staff members heard about their proposal, and began to reach out into the community for help. The feedback from the community at large was instant and overwhelming. From the idea of helping one family to the reality of supplying entire Thanksgiving meals to 25 families, members of Cocoa Beach had their neighbors and classmates in their hearts the whole time. With left over supplies, Students In Action hopes to help these families once again, so that they may have a meal on the table for New Years. This project was the start of a great tradition for Cocoa Beach High School, in which those struggling economically no longer feel isolated, but instead welcomed. Students In Action would especially wish to thank the following organizations for their donations, efforts, and heartwarming generosity. Please keep in mind that there were so many parents, and businesses to thank that we can only highlight a few. If we left your name off it is not because we did not appreciate you: The Point Church, The Ronquillos, Mike and Susan Prince, The International Baccalaureate (IB) Boosters Club led by President Emily Browder, and her outstanding parents, as well as, the entire CBHS family supported this endeavor. We also would like to say a huge thank you to Jill Sterinhauser and her organization “Locals Feeding Locals”, Kawanis, Mr. Timothy Tumulty, Cocoa Beach Student Government Association, The Clark family, The Mott family, Mrs. Madelyn Brabbs, Mrs. Juliette Underill, Ms. Kenne Wells and Coastal Produce. Special thanks to Mrs. Danika Kochanowski and the Cocoa Beach Guidance Department. Again, Cocoa Beach Students In Action appreciate all the contributions and the volunteers time—You helped make 25 families’ Thanksgiving Day very Special! Football – Our Mighty Minutemen Varsity Football Team had another winning season with a 5-4 record and a very good opportunity to make the first round of the State playoff season. It all came down to Week 11 and the overall team results to determine the top four teams. The Minutemen ended up in 5th place in our Region just missing the playoff berth by 2/10ths of a point!

FALL SPORTS WRAP UP (edited for length)
Volleyball – Our Girls’ Volleyball Team finished their season in mid-October. Our varsity team record was 8-12 and 3-4 in the District. Our Junior Varsity team had a winning record, and our Freshman team finished with a 12-3 record and won gold for the 3rd year in a row at the Cocoa High Tiger Tourney. Cocoa Beach Explorer
Boys & Girls Golf Girls Golf performed well in a season of challenging weather, finishing the regular season with a 6-2 record. Boys Golf finished the regular season with an 11-2-1 record. The team finished third in the Cape Coast Conference Championship, and they were the 2017 District 12 Boys Golf Champions!
Boys & Girls Cross Country – The Girls team is a young building team that looks very promising for the future. They made regular progress throughout the season. The Boys Team is one of the most winning Boys XC teams in CBHS school history. The boys won four major season meets and were CCC runner-up, District runner-up and Region runner-up.
Boys and Girls Swimming and Diving – The team finished the regular season with a 5-1 record. The Minutemen Boys and Girls teams both finished 4th in the Cape Coast Conference. In October, both the boys and girls teams defended their District Champion title becoming District Champs for the fifth year running!

MALIK’S
MESSAGE
FROM THE MAYOR
C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E written by Mayor Ben Malik
Hope everyone had a nice Christmas holiday with their families, sometimes the best ideas are the ones borrowed from others. For example, last year in my hurry to put lights up on my house (as my wife asked me when I was going to get to this yet-to-be-finished task with a smile of course!), I got my trusty ladder, untangled the mess of icicle lights from the garage and grabbed my handy staple gun. As I neared completion of the multiple strands of attached lights (after wrangling with some of the faulty light strands that were half on and half off), I took the staple gun and went right through the last strand of lights resulting in shorting out the entire row of lights. In my haste to correct my mishap, I grabbed the shorted out strand and promptly electrocuted myself. Being the electrical engineer that I am, I grabbed it a second time to unravel the shorted strand and electrocuted myself a second time before finally unplugging the shorted strand. I was laughing hysterically at my stupidity and was hoping my neighbors were not watching and/or listening
8
at me yelling a few expletives during this little adventure. So this year, I bought my way out of this nightmare and got a pre-lit wreath to hang up on my house after seeing my genius neighbors doing the same, no more electrocution for this guy!! I do covet my neighbor’s Christmas laser light projection display in its simplicity and ease, but alas, my wife is not a fan… I would like to invite any Cocoa Beach residents interested in the workings of the City of Cocoa Beach to please consider signing up for Citizen’s Academy in Cocoa Beach which is a free program run by the Cocoa Beach Police Department. Academy staff will cover a variety of topics and issues pertaining to the City of Cocoa Beach, including information about seldom seen City functions. The Academy runs for thirteen (13) weeks. Sessions last three (3) hours, on Tuesday evening each week, 5:30 - 8:30 PM. (There will be one (1) Saturday session, 8 AM - 2 PM). Class 23 begins February 20, 2018. Applications must be submitted no later than January 30, 2018. For an application please go to: http://www. cityofcocoabeach.com/documentcenter/ view/2415
Or you can call CBPD at 321-868-3271 or email: police@cityofcocoabeach.com Things you may learn: Cocoa Beach has no local sales/bed tax, Cocoa Beach has over 2.4 million visitors per year (other beach communities in GA/SC like Tybee Island, Jekyll Island have local bed and/or local sales tax to assist their general fund revenues, Tybee Island received $1.1MM in local sales tax and an additional $3.4MM in parking revenues in 2016). CB gets a small portion of sales tax generated in our area based upon full-time population, 11,243 +/-,) and it is hardly fair due to the volume of visitors we get, Cocoa Beach has a lower full-time population than in 2010, Sewer plant has a 6MM gallons/day capacity and we average 3MM gallons/day, Cocoa Beach has more amenities for residents than many larger cities in the county. Best Wishes to all for the New Year! Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor, please feel to contact me with any suggestions at bmalik@cityofcocoabeach.com or my cell at 321-794-6668.

The new year is here, and many of us find ourselves indulging in retrospection and reevaluating some of our life choices. New Year’s resolutions are the perfect opportunity for all those who have aborted last year’s missions to start making the changes they said they would make next week, next month, or perhaps next year. Well, next year is here! Now is your chance to sit down and prepare a list of important lifestyle changes you want to make for yourself. We picked some of the most common New Year’s resolutions and asked some of our local businesses for their recommendations on setting and achieving those resolution goals.
SAVE MORE & SPEND LESS
OVERCOME YOUR FEARS & SPEND MORE TIME WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY
Save more, spend less! Yes, money is and always will be at the heart of many New Year’s resolutions. How many times have you made the same “I’m going to save more money this year” resolution in January only to find in December that you fell short of your goal? Make 2018 the year you achieve your money saving goals! Kevin M. Sacket, President of Sunrise Bank in Cocoa Beach, gave us a few tips to pass along to our readers to aid in making 2018 your best money-saving year yet.
Spending more time with family or overcoming that debilitating fear of heights on your 2018 resolution list? Cocoa Beach has an incredible new adventure to help you check both of those resolutions off your 2018 list. Kelly VanDenBeldt, from Cocoa Beach Aerial Adventures, gave us a quick rundown of just what you can expect at Cocoa Beach’s newest thrilling experience.
•
Establish a budget and adhere to it. Make sure to allow for entertainment and recreation or you will not stick with the budget. • Set aside savings through payroll deduction, once the money is out of your normal spending budget you won’t miss it. • Take advantage of your employer’s 401(k) plan. Employers frequently match some, or all, of your contribution. (Free Money!) • Begin saving for retirement as soon as you enter the workforce. Time is your ally when saving. What about paying down existing debts? • If you have numerous small debts, pay them off from smallest to larger, this will reduce your total monthly minimum payments. • After paying off the smaller debts, concentrate on paying off the most expensive debts next. • Be wary of using balance transfers to consolidate debts. They generally come with significant balance transfer fees. • Use your year-end bonus, tax refund or a designated portion of your raise to reduce debt. Sunrise Bank is Cocoa Beach’s full-service bank offering a wide range of consumer and commercial loan and deposit products in a welcoming environment. Stop in to see how they can meet your saving and financing needs.
“Cocoa Beach Aerial Adventures provides the guest with an opportunity to experience many new things. While playing at our high ropes obstacle course and zipline park, guests will cross balance bridges, climb cargo nets, swing on monkey bars while 45 feet high, and zipline through the live oak canopy. Each participant can challenge themselves mentally and physically by tackling the obstacles as designed or just enjoy finding the “sneak route” methods of traversing the obstacles. “The park is a great way for friends and families to spend time together. Each admission is good for 2 hours of playtime on the park. Afterward, we have a wonderful patio to relax on while having a snack and something refreshing to drink. “The adventure park is the perfect spot to work on overcoming a fear of heights for people. Our harness and belay system are easy to use and help reduce anxiety. The park is also divided into three levels of difficulty. The 3 lower level “green” trails are 25 feet above ground. This allows people the ability to work their way up to the higher level trails as they feel more comfortable. We have watched so many people start the course scared to death, and by the end, they are completely free of fear and having a blast. “Many locals end up buying an annual pass, so that they can come whenever they want all year. If you come 6 times, it pays for itself, and the rest of the year is FREE! We run “locals” specials during the slower tourist seasons like “Friday Freebie” which is a great date night BOGO. We also have group rates for birthday parties, family gatherings, churchgroups/scouts/teams and employee outings.” Cocoa Beach Explorer

LEARN SOMETHING NEW
EXERCISE MORE Exercise more and getting in shape seem to always be at the top of most New Year’s resolution lists. Let’s face it, we all need to treat our bodies like temples and not woodsheds. We asked a great local source, Cocoa Beach Health and Fitness, for a bit of insight on the influx they see due to resolutions and what steps they suggest to help everyone stick to those resolutions to exercise more. Jim McCormick, Owner:
“January memberships increase, but Our classes are a fantastic way because of Snowbird renewals it’s hard to make a connection with the instructor or a fellow classmate to say exactly how many of those new who will be there to support you memberships are due to New Year’s res- in a fun exercise environment. olutions. We will pick up around 200 We’re lucky to have such a talcollection of instructors in new members, and close to that number ented a beachside fitness center. in Snowbird renewals. Since we only need to change the Snowbirds’ expiration dates, they don’t show up as new members. Jacqueline Johnson: Come to group fitness classes. Find a workout that makes you feel awesome afterwards. Always pack your gym bag the night before or in the morning. Invite friends to join you at the gym. Hire a CBHF Certified Personal Trainer. Read fitness and health magazines/blogs/newspaper articles for inspiration. Go to the gym on the weekends!!!
“It’s hard to say exactly how many new members stick to their resolutions more than three months since many of them might be Snowbirds that leave in March and April. The attrition rate over 12 months for most gyms is 40%. On a similar note, the company that puts on the Silver Sneakers fitness programming said we get around a 52% usage rate from their Silver Sneakers members, and most gyms only get around 20%. Our popularity over the years seems to be driven by our classes and that club has a nice, non-intimidating feel to it.” Cocoa Beach Health and Fitness will be offering a New Year’s special of a $10 registration fee on an annual membership which includes a free 30-minute session with a trainer or a free 30-minute massage session.
EAT HEALTHIER Be good to your body! Healthy eating is not about strict dietary limitations, staying unrealistically thin, or depriving yourself of the foods you love. Rather, it’s about feeling great, having more energy, and improving your health. We asked Deborah Wright, owner of The Green Room Café (a Downtown Cocoa Beach organic restaurant), her opinion on achieving healthier eating habits for 2018. “First, make a goal to create your healthier changes in small increments. “Change what you are drinking...eliminate anything with sugar (including sugar replacements), increase your water intake--the absolute single best decision you could make to begin the turn. The following week, eliminate sweets, but take the time to find a tasty replacement for those times you absolutely want one. Next, add more vegetables daily...best if they are raw and organic. Continuing, the following week eliminate processed foods. If it comes in a box...think twice be-
How many of us want to learn something new; but we either just don’t take the time, or more times than not, we are too afraid to try? Let 2018 be your year for new learning experiences! Most of us will agree that one of our favorite classes in grade school was probably art. It was always satisfying to finish an art project and realize “I created this”! With that thought in mind, we asked Tony Sasso from The Studios of Cocoa Beach about opportunities they offer for anyone wanting to learn a new creative skill in 2018. “It’s amazing what we are capable of and don’t think we are! I know I’m not the smartest person in the room and certainly not the best looking, yet I ran for and was elected to office several times. More recently, after years of painting at home, I entered an art show and sold the piece on the opening night. It encouraged me to get with some other smart and art savvy folks, and we started and art co-op: The Studios of Cocoa Beach! You never know what you are really capable of unless you just go try something new. The Studios of Cocoa Beach offers you a
TRAVEL, TRAVEL, TRAVEL fore digesting it. Check all ingredient lists for items recognized as food. Stick to the basics: fruits, vegetables, nuts, meats, etc. The idea is to continue a slow, but steady healthier lifestyle change. Give yourself time for the emotional adjustment and for your palate to begin to expect something different. Then move on to changing your portion sizes. Next try going gluten free...one step at a time. “Avoid the common misconceptions that low fat, no fat, low sugar or no sugar are healthy eating habits. If your great-grandmother didn’t eat it, you probably shouldn’t either. Of course, always check with your doctor before starting any food program change. The biggest misconception is that the healthier food won’t taste good...The Green Room Cafe is an example of healthy tasting good, really good.” Stop by and check out The Green Room Café’s updated menu. They have all your favorites and several new choices to get you started on eating healthier in the new year.
Whether you’re after a round-theworld adventure or short trips closer to home, this is the time to start planning. The new year marks the opportunity for a fresh start, and a chance to think about how and where you want to travel over the coming months. We picked up a few 2018 travel tips from Karen Bense of Cocoa Beach’s Air, Land & Sea Travel Agency. “In January & February we find that people are starting to think seriously about their summer/fall trips, and we also have the snowbirds here booking their cruises. Most people would love to resolve to travel more in the coming year; however, in January & February they are paying off their holiday bills! Some might have received money for Christmas or a travel gift certificate, so we are looking forward to planning trips for them. Alaska bookings have been strong
great New Year’s resolution opportunity...go be an artist (easier than running for office...ha!)! We offer classes and workshops of all kinds and for all levels from never done it before to seasoned artists who want to take it to the next level...maybe even join a co-op and sell your art. “The Studios is designed to overcome the intimidation factor. We are a friendly and welcoming new community center for artists, for folks who want to be artists and those who just want to have fun. We have low-key and fun Sip and Paint sessions that are relaxing and ideal for small groups or even date nights. Drawing classes for all levels. My wife never drew before...ever. She didn’t even tell me she was taking the class until I started receiving the texts with the sketches she did that night. She said it was great fun...and the drawings were pretty good too! We have jewelry making including shell jewelry, painting vacations, watercolor classes, collage painting, glass making and just so much more. We also have art openings every month when we bring in new art and artists, usually with live music, wine and cheese or wine and fruit or wine and something. The artists and instructors attend, so it’s a good time to meet them and get encouragement. “So, get out there, explore your creativity, have fun and try something new this year! We are open nearly every day and into the evening and our classes, hours and events are all on the website at studiosofcocoabeach.org”
for 2018. We have booked a lot of families, grandparents, parents and grandchildren on Alaska cruises. Iceland continues to be popular, and Croatia is starting to boom as a destination for both millennials and active baby boomers. South America is making a comeback; and, of course, Italy is always one of the most popular travel destinations for any age. River Cruises are also showing strong bookings. “My favorite times of the year to travel are May and October. You don’t have the summer crowds and the weather is pleasant in most destinations. If you are looking for a bargain Caribbean cruise, late August, September, and early December have the best deals. My suggestion is to book early to get the best promotions. “We do have a quick motor coach trip to Miami/Key West Feb. 27 to March 2, 2018 for those who want to visit the Miami area and spend a full day in Key West without the hassle of driving themselves. A river wine cruise in France is being planned; we will have more information on that exciting cruise in a few weeks.” Cocoa Beach Explorer

“Murals on Main Street”
Helping in the Revitalizing of Downtown
Downtown Cocoa Beach visitors are being greeted by a whimsical, mid-century mural depicting a fresh look for downtown.
man (davidrothmanart.com) to create the mural. Rothman’s work is featured on many Cocoa Beach buildings and businesses.
The mural, completed in early November, on the side of the Diamond Castle Jewelry building at 38 S. Atlantic Ave, will be visible to drivers approaching downtown from the south on A1A.
“David is unselfishly committed to the downtown community,” said Beth Javens, Executive Director of Cocoa Beach Main Street. “He understands what we are trying to accomplish with Main Street.”
“Murals on Main Street” is a developing cultural and art program which is spearheaded by Cocoa Beach Main Street program, a Florida Main Street Community and an accredited National Main Street program. This is the first mural Cocoa Beach Main Street has undertaken.
The mural is funded in part by a grant from the Space Coast Tourism Development Council and Brevard Cultural Alliance. Diamond Castle owner Scott Levy donated use of the side of the building while the Benjamin Moore Company provided a generous donation for paint and supplies.
Cocoa Beach Main Street commissioned world-renowned local artist David Roth-
The vision for the mural was a partnership between creative specialist and long-time
Cocoa Beach resident Bob Long and Cocoa Beach Main Street. “It was a collaborative effort, and there are many people who helped get this project off the ground,” Javens said. For more information on this and other upcoming events log on and like facebook.com/cocoa.beach.main.street.
Cocoa Beach Main Street, Inc. is a 501c-3 not-for profit. Cocoa Beach Main Street, Inc. advocates on behalf of issues affecting the economic vitality and cultural identity of downtown Cocoa Beach. It is an accredited National Main Street Community. Read more about the organization at mainstreetcocoabeach.com
