MALIK’S MESSAGE COCOA BEACH UPDATE FROM THE MAYOR

It is going on one year that I am working from home. You start to realize how much you miss the social aspect of our lives and the tremendous burden of isolation many of our seniors are feeling. This pandemic has disrupted the lives of so many, and it has been not only financially devastating but has CONTRIBUTING also impacted their mental well-being. The WRITER: Mayor Ben Malik increased supply of the vaccine will provide a light at the end of the tunnel for many residents, and as more supplies are created, vaccines will be available to any person that wants one. Please note, while the reported total number of Cocoa Beach Covid cases are in the plus 700 range (roughly 6% of our entire Cocoa Beach population), these numbers are cumulative cases from March of 2020!! The City has been reporting our active Covid cases of persons that currently have Covid-19 in a two-week contagion stage. This latest number, per our Fire Chief, is at 36 within the city limits and six outside of the city limits. We are due some good news this year, and a couple of positive developments include the following: •

FDOT has submitted plans to repave SR 520 from Peebles Bridge to the relief bridge (we have also asked FDOT to engage formal study to elevate the SR 520 to lessen flooding issues). Water clarity has improved with the cooler weather helping in addition to the stormwater and infrastructure/dredging projects. Welcome new Cocoa Beach Police officer James Peek! MARCH IS RED CROSS MONTH:

Recognizing “Everyday Heroes” in our Community

In times of crisis, the American Red Cross is fortunate to witness the best of humanity. Emergencies haven’t stopped during COVID-19, and people in our community have stepped up in all kinds of ways to help our neighbors. On the Space Coast, while we were spared the direct impact of a catastrophic event in 2020, local Red Cross volunteers traveled thousands of miles to help others and were here to help our neighbors recover from everyday disasters like home fires, including four major multi-unit family fires in Brevard County. During the month of March — declared Red Cross Month by U.S. presidents for nearly 80 years — we honor the people in our community who deliver relief when help can’t wait. Our humanitarian mission wouldn’t be possible without this network of dedicated volunteers, more than 90% of the Red Cross workforce. “As the pandemic wears on, we have seen a growing desire to give back,” said Rebecca

DeLorenzo, Executive Director, Florida’s Space Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross. “We celebrate this humanitarian spirit during Red Cross Month and ask others to join us.” You can help ensure that families don’t face emergencies alone — especially during a pandemic. Any support you can provide makes a difference — whether it’s uniting with thousands of compassionate people to donate on Red Cross Giving Day, March 24; volunteering; or learning lifesaving skills. We also invite residents, businesses and landmarks to “light up red” on March 24, in recognition of the humanitarian mission of the Red Cross. Visit redcross.org/CentralFlorida to learn how you can get involved.

COCOA BEACH SENIORS NOMINATED FOR ACADEMIC ALL-STATE TEAM We have hundreds of wonderful students at Cocoa Beach and if given the time and space, I would brag about all of them. Unfortunately, that is not possible. But, I do want to tell you about two of our Seniors; Madison Day and Michael Watson. They are true “student athletes.” The Florida Dairy Farmers Association and the Florida High School Activities Association, which oversees high school sports in Florida, select a handful of Senior students each year for an Academic All-State Team. These are graduating Seniors who have excelled in both the classroom and in athletic competition. Well, Madison and Michael certainly qualify and are our nominees to the All-State Team.

and is First Chair Cellist for the Orchestra. To say Madison has been active in athletics would be an understatement. She is Captain of the Varsity Girls Soccer team and has been on Varsity since her Sophomore year. She has also played for three years on the Varsity Golf team and this spring she is playing Varsity Softball. Madison is grateful for the lessons sports has taught her, “As a three-sport athlete and IB

Madison has recorded straight A’s in all of her classes here at Cocoa Beach for a perfect Madsion Day unweighted grade point average of 4.0, and a weighted average of 4.7. She has taken on the challenge of participating in the International Baccalaureate Programme and has even been designated an AP Scholar with Honors. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Key Club, the Student Government,

student, I am thankful for the life lessons I have learned by participating in these programs throughout the years. Through sports, I have learned teamwork is the best way to achieve a goal. There are many things, both on and off the field, I would not have been able to accomplish if I did not have my teammates at my side. I also have learned that hard work, dedication, and perseverance are critical for success in both sports and academics. I believe my participation in these extracurricular activities has greatly contributed to my achievements due to the life lessons they have taught me, and I would never have realized how connected they are. I am very thankful for everyone who has helped me along the way.”

He is also pursuing the International Baccalaureate Diploma, has taken numerous AP courses and boasts a 3.9 unweighted and 4.5 weighted grade point average. He is a member of the National Honor Society, an officer in the Junior ROTC program, and participates in academic competitions such as the Math Bowl. Michael has earned a Varsity letter in three sports for five straight years. He has been a member of the Varsity Boys Lacrosse team since 8th grade and Michael Watson also on the Varsity Swim team since 8th grade, serving as team Captain this year. at the Varsity level since 7th grade, Michael has won two Cape Coast Conference titles, qualified for the state meet five times, placed at the state meet four times, and been named an All County Wrestler three times. He has been a team Captain for three straight years. Reflecting in the difference that participation in athletics has made on his life, Michael said, “Sports have taught me it is important to always keep your composure and stay tough, even during the toughest of times.” I think everyone would agree that these are accomplished student athletes and fine young people. Just two of the many we are fortunate to have at Cocoa Beach.

The track has deteriorated to the extent that it is a safety concern for our athletes. The current track is 7 lanes of ill repair asphalt with cracks, breaks, and a rough, uneven surface, conditions which lead to injury. It is no longer a regulation track suitable for meets. Restoration of our track will allow Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High School to support the training needs of its athletes and host track meets.

READER’S CO RN E R Greetings Cocoa Beach Residents: This year is moving forward fast! Hopefully, by the time you read this, we will have seen our last frigid days for 2021. This month’s reads consist of not your typical love story, a crime noir by one of our Cocoa Beach locals, and the story of our modern-day rock-et stars.

CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Christiana C. Succar, Ph.D.

In Five Years by Rebecca Serles. In what seems like a typical romance novel, the protagonist Dannie Kohan is on track to check all the perfect career, love, and life boxes. When she is thrown off-kilter by a premonition, a powerful, vivid love story ensues that reminds us that love comes from different places and our closest friends know us better than we think.

Walking with the Dead by Charles Domokos. This crime noir takes place in fast-paced L.A. and is the story of Charlie Tobias; a trained classical musician turned probate attorney. With the affable narrator and vivid imagery, the reader feels Charlie’s angst about making his billable hours each month while wondering who else will end up dead. The author’s use of language evokes the sights, sounds, and smells of L.A. as Charlie makes his way into the maze of the legal world of murder, deceit, and bribery. An engaging and humorous tale and a mustread for crime-junkies! The Space Barons by Christian Davenport. This nonfiction piece follows the lives of novice space enthusiasts Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. The author provides a narrative of their childhood dreams leading to crafting space rockets, the trials and tribulations of moving spaceflight away from government control into private industry, and the constant competition between two contemporaries for the race to interplanetary travel. These engaging stories provide a window into how dreams, hardwork, and perseverance can turn a pure love of something into reality. This month visit my blog to see what else I am reading, https://cod-caterpillar-mb4b.squarespace.com/work/studio-vega-hpj8c password: cocoabeach2021 and the latest updates on my reading life! Stay tuned for another local author featured in next month’s edition as well. Happy Reading, Christiana C. Succar, Ph.D. 10 | C O C OABE ACHE X PLORER .C OM

Jacquilyn Eusanio Exhibit at Studios of Cocoa Beach, March 2021

The Studios of Cocoa Beach continues its series of mini solo exhibitions with the work of painter Jacquilyn Eusanio. You can view the exhibition the entire month of March at the gallery, 165 Minuteman Causeway in downtown Cocoa Beach. Jacquilyn Eusanio began painting as therapy while dealing with cancer. Having won that battle she continues to create works that showcase the vibrancy of life , focusing on the natural world which we too often take for granted. Her acrylic paintings, some as large as 4 by 6 feet, demand attention. Jacquilyn’s love of flowers produces meadows of windblown blooms filled with texture and bold colors. In contrast her water series paintings are cool and blue, inspired by her Cocoa Beach

locale. Her recent abstracts include subtle layers in silvery grays. The exhibition includes a varied selection of her work. The Studios of Cocoa Beach is a non-profit gallery, home to 35 local artists working in a variety of mediums. The Studios is open most days Wednesday through Sunday and Monday or Tuesday by appointment. Please visit, www.studiosofcocoabeach.org to confirm hours and for more information on all the Studios artists.

BREVARD COUNTY JERSEY MIKE’S SUBS CELEBRATES MONTH OF GIVING IN MARCH To Benefit The Children’s Hunger Project MONTH OF

Gn

In March, Jersey Mike’s Subs will be celebrating their 11th annual Month of Giving in the Brevard County area. During the month, customers can make a donation to The Children’s Hunger Project at the Jersey Mike’s location in Cocoa Beach along with all Brevard County locations. Jersey Mike’s is locally owned and operated, and has committed to giving back as part of their core mission. This will culminate with the Jersey Mike’s “Day of Giving” on Wednesday, March 31st, when our local Jersey Mike’s owners will give 100% of the day’s sales - not just profit - to The Children’s Hunger Project. The Children’s Hunger Project provides weekend meals and fights childhood hunger and malnutrition during the school year. Teachers and school administrators, those on the front line of caring for our

children while they are away from their parents during the week, know firsthand of the weekend hunger problem. In Brevard County, the number of children in the free and reduced-price meal program exceeds 50%. Some elementary schools have 80% or more of their kids on the free and reduced-price meal program with many of them at risk of childhood hunger and malnutrition. The money raised during the month of March will go directly to the purchase and distribution of food for our local elementary school students right here in Brevard.

75-PLUS BREVARD BUSINESSES OFFER REWARDS TO ACTIVE ‘LAGOON LOYAL’ PARTICIPANTS The Path to a Healthier Lagoon is Getting Clearer with LagoonLoyal.com The LagoonLoyal.com website and platform unites local residents and businesses who are joining forces to fulfill the vision of a cleaner, healthier lagoon. There are over 400 active Lagoon Loyal participants engaging in pollution reduction actions and being rewarded with discounts from over 75 participating local businesses.

excess nutrient pollution from entering the lagoon through storm drains, but the points can be instantly converted to a wide range of discounts at businesses throughout the county — including restaurants, retail, wellness facilities, recreation, and other everyday services. Each business creates their own discount and can change it at any time.”

How it works: 1. Brevard County residents create their free LagoonLoyal.com account 2. They complete lagoon-friendly actions to earn points 3. Then they swap points for local business discounts

There are currently 20 simple activities residents can complete again and again to earn points, ranging from choosing the right fertilizer, buying native plants, or attending a lagoon-centric event listed on the website such as oyster bagging or shoreline clean-ups. LagoonLoyal. com/actions lists the complete range of activities.

The Lagoon Loyal process is cyclical in nature and benefits everyone involved. Residents complete simple lagoonfriendly tasks and earn discounts; businesses get more foot traffic with Lagoon Loyal marketing; and the entire county enjoys progress towards a healthier lagoon. “It’s a win–win–win for everyone involved,” said Jamie Guth, strategic manager of the Lagoon Loyal program. “For example, a resident can upload a photo of their grass clippings blown back into their lawn after mowing and earn 10 Lagoon Loyal points. That simple action not only prevents

“There are hundreds of projects currently underway to save our lagoon, including wastewater treatment upgrades, septic upgrades, stormwater treatment, muck dredging, and oyster restoration to name a few. LagoonLoyal.com empowers residents to get involved to restore the lagoon sooner,” said Virginia Barker, Director of Brevard County Natural Resources. “Imagine the positive impact 250,000 households could have on the health of the lagoon this year by adopting a few basic actions and habits.”

About Lagoon Loyal Lagoon Loyal is a Brevard County community outreach and incentive program that encourages residents to commit to activities that benefit the health of the Indian River Lagoon.
