Embrace the freshest of fresh mountain air emanating from the Barrington Tops.
Then take a deep breath and pause for a moment to truly appreciate this delightful, bucolic picture –because it really is THIS beautiful all year ‘round, and there’s so much more to discover!
Sitting at the gateway to the Southern Barrington Tops, Dungog Shire is just 2.5 hours’ drive from Sydney and 1 hour’s drive from Newcastle.
Bounded by Singleton, Maitland, Port Stephens, Upper Hunter and the Barrington Coast, the Dungog Shire covers an area of 2248 km2 that includes the magnificent World Heritage-listed ancient Gondwana Rainforests of the Barrington Tops National Park.
The traditional Aboriginal landowners – the Gringai – lovingly nurtured these lands for over 40,000 years before Europeans arrived,
naming it Tungog (or Tunkok) meaning ‘the place of thinly wooded hills’ in the Awabakal language. It’s easy to imagine the first European settlers to the area in the early 1800s being captivated on arrival, reminded of the familiar rural landscapes they had left behind in England, Scotland and Wales and many place names reflect that affection. The banks of the Williams, Paterson and Allyn Rivers made ideal first settlements and the rich land, producing cedar timbers, citrus fruit, grains, tobacco, grapes, wine, and dairy and beef cattle, built the local economy.
Today, Dungog Shire extends a BIG WELCOME to visitors, inviting you to explore our historic and charming villages and bigger towns like Dungog, Clarence Town, Gresford and East Gresford, Paterson and Vacy; have fun vintage and boutique shopping; taste our delicious local fare; absorb our heritage, art and culture; discover our natural beauty on mountain bike, walking and cycling trails; enjoy our friendly accommodation options; and soak up our warm hospitality wherever you go.

SINCE 2016
The team at Tinshed has been brewing rustic beers in the heart of Dungog since 2016. Jimmy and Haley have worked hard to create a small brewery with huge personality. It's the perfect place to sit, relax and share a story with a beer, wine or cider. The small bar has 9 taps which regularly rotate over with different styles and flavours. Speaking of flavours, the brisket burger comes highly recommenced, smoked low and slow in-house – you just can't go past it! If you're in Dungog it's a must-see – pop in for a beer, have a chat and take some home to remember beautiful Dungog.
