Message from the Publisher As the evenings cool, we gently ease into fall, another beautiful season in Delta. The sun sets a little earlier, the leaves are showing signs of turning colour, and our home lives return to routines of school and work.

In this issue we celebrate the wonderful caring community that is Delta. We are blessed with a hospital locally that includes state of the art Lorna & Brian diagnostics machines thanks to the work of hundreds of local auxiliary volunteers. Our seniors have multiple opportunities to age gracefully within the community and with a great quality of life. Local non-profits work tirelessly to support those in need within our community.

Local farms are in harvest mode in Fall and Delta is rich with farming and ranching history. Local restaurants and farm tours bring these abundant riches to our attention. Our local artists have a wide range of creative expression and the artistic community is supported and valued.

Everything is here, and as we enjoy the season we hope to see you out and about supporting our Delta businesses, people that live and work in our community. Remember to shop local!

ver the last few years, a transformation has happened in senior retirement homes. Today’s savvy retirees and their families expect a lot more from the traditional model of care of yesterday. The reason for this is simple: Canada’s demographics have dramatically shifted. According to Statistics Canada, there are now more people in the country age 65 and over than there are under age 15.

That has meant a growing demand from a senior cohort that is healthier and wealthier than past generations, many of whom are looking for a sense of

community and private-pay suites with hotel-style amenities.

The culinary experience alone raises the bar. Each Bria kitchen is led by a Red Seal chef, who prepares healthy, delicious restaurant-style cuisine, and where the dining rooms offer private dining areas for entertaining family and guests.

Creating a home-like atmosphere is essential, says Lara Fares, director of care, The Waterford.

“As soon as you walk into either home, you can feel a true sense of community,” she notes. “There is a real difference here that you can see, and it’s

because the staff really care.”

Creating a home-like environment is apparent at The Waterford. The home has both independent and supportive housing, so couples need not be separated. “For loved ones, it is the best solution because although they live in separate suites, they can share social hours, meals and keep their connection alive,” adds Lara.

ctober marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Did you know that breast cancer affects about 1 in 9 women in BC during their lifetime?

Education and early detection are key to prevention and treatment.

Delta Hospital’s new digital imaging mammogram screening equipment allows healthcare professionals to quickly view a detailed digital readout for each patient, so waiting times and processing of results are minimized. The Delta Hospital Auxiliary, which played a key role in funding the $700,000 purchase, is passionate about spreading the word about the importance of early detection. “We are constantly encouraging women to step forward,” notes Coordinator Elaine Canning.

Mammograms are safe and effective, often finding lumps several years before they are discovered in a self-examination or by a healthcare professional. Being too busy, unsure, or considered low-risk might be excuses for not having one, but the bottom line is that when cancer is found early

enough, there are often more treatment options available and higher survival rates.

The Auxiliary hopes that companies will also play a role in helping to spread the word about the importance of mammograms. Many businesses in recent years have organized cancer-related sponsorship and money-raising. Employersupported volunteering engages and educates employees, making a positive impact on their workplace.

Every year, a priority equipment needs list is presented to the DHA from Fraser Health. DHA is active in co-funding to meet their purchasing goals through their income streams made possible by their over 500 hardworking volunteers. They also provide patient care and comfort, and help to maintain good relations between the hospital and community. Their popular pet, music and recreation therapy programs benefit patients and families. Their four volunteer-based business enterprises include the hospital café, gift shop, lifeline, and award-winning thrift store. Since the

auxiliary began in 1969, it’s estimated that the Society has raised over $20 million for the hospital.

Brown is the new Green

I

s this the slogan for Delta’s lawn sprinkling restrictions? No. Brown is the new colour for ‘green’ consumerism, and misleading claims about supposedly ‘green’ or environmentally friendly products.

First, the ‘green’ movement happened. Next came exploitive product ‘greenwashing’ (falsely branding products to seem environmentally safe). Then arrived third-party certifiers such as Ecologo® and Green Seal™ who get paid to certify products as safe.

That’s where things started turning ‘brown’.

Third party certification standards are set shamefully low to qualify as many products as possible and collect large fees. For approximately $6000.00 and annual renewals upwards of $4000.00, even ‘brown’ products can become ‘certified green’.

The big winners are large corporations. Certifying their existing ‘brown’ products costs less than developing new ‘green’ ones, while smaller companies with truly ‘green’ products struggle with the certification fees. This ‘pay-to-play’ system doesn’t grade products either, so ‘browner’ products get the same certification as the ‘greener’ ones.

Consumers need to be the final certifiers. Stop rewarding ‘brown’ with your hard-earned dollars. Start comparing products on Safety Data Sheets. SDS’s are where the real information sits and ‘brown’ doesn’t want you to see them. Questions? www.beearthsmart.ca

1 Loaf French Bread 6 slices Provolone 6 slices Tuscan Ham 1 to 3 Granny Smith Apples 1 pkg. Hollandaise mix (McCormick’s) 6 eggs 3/4 cup half n half Cream 1/4 cup Apple Juice 1 tsp Salt or to taste 1/2 tsp ground Black Pepper or to taste 1 tsp Herbes de Provence 1 tsp Dijon Mustard 1 Garlic Clove or to taste

S

lice French loaf into 6 two and a half inch slices with bread knife and make a larger pocket in middle of bottom side of bread approximately two to three inches in length ensuring not to break upper crust of French bread. Peel apple, remove core and slice into 6 wedges. Place a slice of the ham on cutting board or plate, top it with a slice of cheese and then apple wedge. fold in sides of ham n cheese around apple then do the same with top and bottom creating a bundle, place into pocket of bread. Repeat five more times. Take the last 8 ingredients on list and beat together.

Submerge the 6 prepared French toast slices into the egg mixture bath and let soak for 1/2 to 3/4 hour, turning repeatedly so they absorb all the mixture before cooking.

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees - Place a small amount of cooking oil in a pan or on a griddle, heat to medium temperature and brown both sides of your French toast.

Transfer to the oven - If you are using

griddle - transfer your 6 French toasts into an ovenproof dish and then bake an additional 15 minutes in a 375-degree oven so cheese melts and apple cooks nicely.

I then prepare my sauce - following package instructions - but I replace 1/2 water with 1/2 cup apple juice (no sugar added), and a 1/4 tsp garlic powder for more savory taste.

Optional: Prepare two remaining apples - peel, core, slice into 12 wedges per apple. Microwave in bowl for two minutes on high with a teaspoon of brown sugar, 1 tsp of salt, 1/2 tsp of Herbes de Provence.

Plating: Warm 6 plates in oven at 170 degrees. Take 1/4 cup of sauce and pour into centre of plate, place a slice of savory French toast on top, top with apple wedges and garnish with fresh herbs and edible flowers. Green grapes also compliment the dish nicely.

It wasn’t until after her mother’s death that Jullianna began to realize how lifechanging this connection would be. Julianna discovered a number of her mother’s original drawings, paintings and sketches that she had created over many years, and was overcome by the beauty of her art. Each work, so reminiscent of her childhood and surrounding nature, awakened memories of faces and events long forgotten. This process of discovering was transformative, as she found a part of herself in the images, and began to understand the love behind the work. In her pieces, a desire to live authentically, embrace her origins, and

help women celebrate their diversity and individuality, was born.

utch-born Albert Beeksma came to Canada in the early fifties with little more than a suitcase, a few dollars and big dreams. Fifty years later, the company he founded in his home with his wife Elly, is now one of Delta’s longest family run success stories.

After trying his hand in the printing industry, Albert was hired as a carpet installer. He soon earned a reputation as a master installer and people began hiring him after hours.

“When he started getting more side jobs he decided to start his own company,” says Yvonne Clark, daughter/manager.

Jim Baird

andra Baird fondly remembers hearing stories about her legendary grandfather Thomas Baird. His knowledge and keen eye for premium cattle made him one of British Columbia’s steeliest judges and buyers of show cattle.

Thomas moved to Vancouver in 1927, and soon established the first public stockyards in the city, at the foot of Fraser St. Through the ensuing years, he was asked by several ranchers to assist them in selecting their stock.

Thomas’s son Jim Baird followed in his father’s footsteps. He, his wife Joan and their four children moved to Ladner in 1962. Ten years later, Jim founded Baird Cattle Co Ltd. “He also operated the Feedlot in Surrey,

where we are still feeding cattle today,” adds Sandra of her father Jim. An astute businessman, Jim also partnered in Ladner’s J&L Beef Packing Plant, selling J&L Beef to butchers, restaurants, and grocery stores.

In honour of the Baird’s long rich ranching history, the fourth generation established J. Baird Cattle Co. “This is a new venture in the cattle business, farm gate sales,” explains Sandra.

“We sell our meat directly to the public, from our own farm store. We started our sales at the Ladner Market, and opened our store this summer.

An Artist’s Passion for Tattooing

“T

attooing is my answer to being able to pursue my love for art, and have an art career that I can make a living at,” explains Kc Wladichuk, whose goal in her teens was to be either a horseback rider or an artist. Tattooing is just one of her many artistic expressions, including painting, mixed media and jewelry making, but she got hooked on it about ten years ago after taking a trip with her uncle to Adrenaline for a tattoo session where she met her current boss and mentor, ‘Big Jay”.

Tattoo designs are very personal and many people have questions which is why the artist makes consultations a part of her scheduling process. “This is a great way to introduce myself and get to know a little bit about my new client.”

An initial consultation helps to determine tattoo sizing and placement.

She estimates that seven out of ten people who visit the shop are from Ladner, happy to make the short drive to New Westminster on the new highway.
