What’s challenging for one person can be leisurely for someone else, but while it’s not possible to be precise about how easy or difficult an activity will be, our activity ratings can offer a practical guide as to what to expect. When assigning an activity level to a holiday, we consider factors such as gradient and length of walk, as well as the terrain, route conditions, and location.
Suitable for anyone who is reasonably fit and healthy, enjoys the occasional weekend walk. Holidays may involve short, steeper sections or gentler, but longer ascents/descents - be prepared for altitude changes of up to 400m. A head for heights is not necessary. For anyone looking for longer walks and is confident with daily ascents/descents of up to 700m. You need to be able to navigate via the app or map. Some sections may be on uneven terrain where scrambling is required. A head for heights may be required on some routes.
1+ PLUS TRIPS
Plus trips have small sections of the route that are more challenging than the overall grading.
DUAL LEVELS
Dual levels signify a choice of routes at either level . You

All accommodation we use has been inspected and classified by the authorities of the relevant countries. Headwater’s hotel ratings are provided to give you guidance on the relative standard of the hotel you will be staying in. In most occasions this will match the official star rating of the hotel, however, if we feel it necessary Headwater will adapt a rating to what we believe is fair. These ratings are reviewed regularly to ensure their accuracy and relevance.
PLEASE NOTE:
• Single rooms (even if you’ve paid a supplement) sometimes just offer privacy, and are sometimes of a lower standard than doubles or twins.
• In several countries, when requesting a room with twin beds, a double bed frame with two single mattresses and separate bedding is the norm.
• In Europe when requesting a room for three people either a double or twin room with an extra bed is often provided, which may be cramped.
• Some facilities, such as swimming pools, may not be available for early and late season holidays. This is at the hotel’s discretion and subject to last minute change and, as such, it is not always possible to make you aware prior to travel.
• The available accommodation may not always be the one included online, especially during busy periods or for late bookings. We will endeavour where possible to find a hotel of a similar standard, facilities and location. Any differences will be highlighted at the time. Where this is a common occurrence we prefer not to list any individual hotels to avoid disappointment.
Please see our website (using the link on the individual trip pages) for full details of the accommodation on each trip.
In order to create your perfect holiday, we can easily arrange any city breaks or extra nights’ accommodation at the start and end of your holiday, and occasionally in the middle of the trip. Associated travel/transfers are an additional cost. Your travel consultant will be happy to assist with this. Please ask at the time of booking.
Details are clearly stated in the ‘What’s included’ box on the individual holiday pages on our website.
We can provide advice on suitable trips for children aged between 3-17 years. Please contact us for details and prices.
For individuals travelling, hotels often charge a Single Supplement for the use of the room by one person. In addition, our prices are based on 2 people sharing any land and baggage transfers costs between them. As such, if applicable, we may also charge a Solo Supplement to cover the full cost of this service.
Should you require an upgrade to an e-bike or to extend your bike hire for any extra nights booked in your holiday region (either before, after or in the middle of your holiday) then an additional charge will apply, please ask your sales consultant at the time of booking. There is a legal minimum age of 14 years to hire an e-bike across much of Europe, however, this is ultimately at the discretion of our supplier partners and as such you may be required to sign a waiver provided to you by Headwater covering their usage by children aged between 14-18 years.
The new EU Entry/Exit System (EES) will gradually roll out from 12 Oct 25 for all non-EU citizens, meaning this change will affect all UK Passport holders. The collection of which is likely to result in delays, certainly initially, and we advise you to allow extra time to clear passport control. Then, by late-2026 the European Union aims to introduce the ETIAS, essentially an electronic visa, which all British nationals will need to purchase directly. It will be valid for 3 years or until the date of passport expiry (whichever comes first). For more information, please visit https://travel-europe.europa.eu/en/etias
Helmets
In several countries cycling helmets are a legal requirement, see individual trip pages for details. We strongly recommended the wearing of a helmet for all cycling activities and not doing so is at your own risk. Not wearing a helmet may also affect the validity of your insurance, plus if helmets are mandatory in the country you are in, you may not be allowed to take part in any cycling element, which may mean that you are not able to continue with that part of your holiday and Headwater will not be responsible for any costs you incur as a result.
For cycle activities you will need to bring your own cycle helmet(s). We recognise this may be an inconvenience to some, but Headwater Holidays will not facilitate the rental of cycle helmets for strict health and safety reasons, as we cannot guarantee their integrity from one rental to the next . If you do rent a helmet for your holiday independently, Headwater Holidays accepts no responsibility or liability in respect of that rental and the agreement for the helmet rental shall be between you and the third party supplier.
Holiday documentation
Important holiday documentation will be provided by email or in the My Headwater app during the booking process and prior to your holiday. If you have any queries or notice any inaccuracies, please contact Headwater immediately.

Assistance
Should you need us during your holiday we are just a phone call away, 24 hours a day. Prior to travel you will be provided with a number for our local agent, if applicable, and our 24hrs emergency phone number.

3. Your holiday booking
A booking will exist as soon as we issue our booking confirmation. Your booking is made on the terms of the full booking conditions online. The person making the booking must be 18 years old or over and when the Lead Name makes a booking they guarantee that they have the authority to accept, and do accept on behalf of all passengers in your party, the terms of the booking conditions. We strongly recommend that you make no travel arrangements to your point of departure, make any connecting travel that is nonrefundable or non-changeable or incurs penalties or otherwise incur any costs in respect of visas or vaccinations until such time as your travel itinerary has been confirmed. If you make such arrangements which you are then unable to use due to a change in your itinerary we shall not be liable to you for the cost of those arrangements.
It is an essential condition of joining a Headwater holiday that you have an adequate and valid travel insurance policy, for the full duration of your holiday, to cover the cost of medical expenses, injury, death, repatriation, cancellation and curtailment, and the activities included in the holiday. We recommend that you take out insurance as soon as your booking is confirmed.
5. Paying for your holiday DEPOSIT
You will be asked to pay a deposit at the time of booking of at least £400 per person/25% of the booking value (whichever is greater). For certain travel arrangements the deposit may be higher than those shown. You will be advised of your deposit at the time the booking is made. You may also be required to pay on booking for any non-transferable and non-refundable items. Your sales consultant will advise you of this during the booking process.
FINAL BALANCE
The amount of the remainder of your holiday will be shown on your confirmation invoice. This must be paid prior to 90 days before departure. In certain cases, we may request full payment more than 90 days before departure where, for example, airlines require full payment on booking.
6. If you cancel your holiday
You may cancel your travel arrangements at any time by providing written notification from the Lead Name or your travel agent to admin@headwater.com. Cancellation charges apply as set out in the booking conditions. Since we incur costs in cancelling your travel arrangements, you will have to pay cancellation charges as follows:

7. If you change your booking
We will do our utmost to make any changes but it may not always be possible. Any request must be made in writing from the Lead Name or your travel agent. You will be asked to pay an administration charge of £50 per person, and any costs that we incur in making any possible alterations (including those charged by third party suppliers who provide the component parts of your booking).
8. If we change or cancel your booking
We endeavour not to, but we reserve the right to make changes to your booking as required. If we have to alter your holiday significantly you will have the choice of either:
a) Accepting the change, or
b) Accepting an alternative holiday, where we offer one (we will refund any price difference if the alternative is of lower value), or
c) Cancelling your holiday and having a refund of all monies paid.
Please see full terms and conditions for further details.
If you choose to travel on this type of holiday, you must be prepared to accept that there is an inherent element of risk, which is all part of the experience. We go to great lengths to take all reasonable care of you and expect that you will take sensible precautions and responsibility for yourself, exercising appropriate caution and not undertaking any activities which you do not feel comfortable or capable of doing so, paying special attention to terrain and weather conditions. Ratings are given to indicate the level of activity expected. By confirming your booking you acknowledge on behalf of all passengers in your party that you have the appropriate levels of ability, fitness and good health to safely participate in the holiday.
On a guided group holiday it is necessary that you abide by the authority of the group leader, who represents Headwater. We may from time to time, operate guided holidays with lower or higher numbers than the advertised group sizes. The minimum number required will be notified to you at the time of booking. We reserve the right to cancel your booking if the minimum number required for a guided holiday has not been reached.

We will investigate if there has been a failure to perform or improper performance of the travel services included in this package in accordance with our full booking terms and conditions. We shall respond as soon as reasonably possible to any complaints or issues but this may take up to 28 days in some circumstances, which is in compliance with ABTA's Code of Conduct.

For the second year running, we are partnering with World Bicycle Relief to provide fifty more Buffalo bikes. In rural communities, where distance can mean missing out on healthcare, education, or work, a tough, reliable bicycle can be truly life-changing.
We like to measure what matters. Since first launching the initiative in 2020, we've been tracking every gram of CO₂e per person, per trip — and sharing this information openly so we can cut it smartly. Meaning you can travel with a clearer conscience.
Since 2021 we have partnered with Rewilding Apennines with the goal to rewild 100 sqm of the Italian Apennines per passenger over five years. Landscapes like these are close to our hearts as Italy remains one of our most popular destinations for active and outdoor holidays.
From solar-powered stays and recycling initiatives to reforestation projects, we partner with businesses that act responsibly. By supporting communities, adopting sustainable practices, and reducing plastics, we’re shrinking our footprint and helping economies thrive.
Hands dirty, hearts full — this year our teams have once again rolled up their sleeves to clear pollution, restore habitats, and provide woodland maintenance by planting trees via our volunteer days. Our local partnerships make a lasting change.
