A TRIP FOR ALL SEASONS

It is always a great time to get away, you just need to pick your destination. Headwater offers active holidays year round so you can travel when you want. Here are some of our insider tips of where it is best to travel when…

Spring Summer Autumn Winter

JAPAN

End of March to mid-April is traditionally the cherry blossom period, however the blossom is short-lived and very popular so you need to book early and be lucky. Thankfully spring time also enjoys pleasant weather for walking and touring this incredible destination. Connect with the country and culture of the Land of the Rising Sun through pilgrimage walks or follow in the footsteps of James Clavell’s iconic story, Shogun.

PORTUGAL

Spring in Portugal’s autonomous regions of Madeira and Azores is blooming marvellous, with flora and fauna in abundance and mild weather perfect for walking Madeira's Levadas or the Azores’craters. In fact, Madeira is called the “Island of Eternal Spring”due to its mild consistent weather. On the mainland, the Algarve is a pleasant temperature and pleasantly uncrowded whilst the vineyards further north of Douro and Minho are awakening.

SCANDINAVIA

To avoid southern Europe’s hot summers, you would be well placed to look to the cuisine and scenery rich Scandinavia. Cycle through Norway’s fjords or Lofoten Islands, Stockholm’s island archipelago, or Copenhagen’s leisurely trails. Hike around Norway’s Balestrand and Bergen or treat yourself to a private guided trip walking the jaw-dropping Faroe Islands. If you prefer a more relaxed pace why not tour the Nordic cities by rail?

ITALY

More than a room with a view, this is a country with a view and autumn is the perfect time to see it. Stunning autumnal colours combine with harvest of grapes and truffles to create a countryside that is unmissable. The cities are a little quieter and the summer heat is abating, making for a more pleasurable experience. Whilst autumn is our personal favourite time to experience Italy, there is never a bad time to visit.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING

For those wishing to be active over winter we can offer holidays with full instruction and equipment, extensive groomed trails, and snow-sure destinations, as well as more challenging opportunities for experienced skiers. Our careful selection offers trails of 60km in the Swiss Alps, 140km from your doorstep in Norway, 200km through Italy’s Dolomites, 260km amongst the Austrian Alps, and 300km in Finnish Lapland!

THE ALPS

Higher altitudes mean a shorter season in which to head to the Alps. Hike and delight in breathtaking views on the Tour du Mont Blanc; of Switzerland’s chocolate box Matterhorn, of the iconic ragged peaks of the Dolomites’Tre Cime; or in the Von Trapp Austrian backdrop of alpine meadows and peaks. We have a range of walks for all abilities on offer. If you prefer 2-wheels, the lesser known Julian Alps of Slovenia are a must.

SPAIN

The long sunny days are still warm, but not hot, and evenings are temperate and pleasant - making this the ideal time to go. From the Balearic islands, the white villages of Andalucia, the coast of Catalonia or Valencia, to the peaks of the Pyrenees or Picos; there are plenty of possibilities to discover on foot or from the saddle. Or enjoy the quieter streets whilst touring the 3 cities of Malaga, Granada and Seville.

CANARY ISLANDS

While everyone else is hibernating, we recommend flying south for winter to the Canary Islands. Despite being a plural noun, like the Spice Girls, each island has its own distinct character to discover. Whichever of the island's dramatic scenery you choose to hike through, it will surprise and delight in equal measure, whilst the mild temperatures of this mountainous archipelago and its sunny days will warm more than your soul.

MESSING ABOUT IN BOATS

Did you know Headwater’s first ever trip was a canoeing trip on the Loire over 40 years ago? We currently have 2 very popular canoeing trips and several multiple activity trips, which include time on the water.

As I read to my daughter Wind In the Willows as her bedtime story, I am drawn to the enduring phrase of Ratty: “… there is nothing-absolutely nothing-half so much worth doing as messing about in boats”.

At Headwater we choose our canoeing carefully, easily navigable rivers, reliable water levels and no rapids ensure safe, happy paddling. These strict criteria are why we don’t offer lots of these trips. So for those who want a relaxed time on the water paddling from place to place (downstream) beneath the limestone rock faces of the Dordogne or beneath (literally) the Loire’s châteaux, this is for you. If you prefer a little more variety, then take a look at our multi-activity holiday where you can walk, cycle and often canoe, all in the same holiday. Canoeing (and multi-activity) also make great family holidays and children as young as 8 can go.

There is something special about paddling down a river; the babble of the water keeping you company and a voyage of discovery with each bend. You know what, Ratty is still spot on.

“...effortless paddling along a beautiful stretch of river is great! The lazy stops along the route were exceptional.”
R KNIGHT, CANOEING ON THE DORDOGNE (B08DO)

WE TAKE CARE OF EVERYTHING

We provide everything you need, from canoe and paddle, to buoyancy aid to barrels for keeping your day kit dry. You will also have a lesson on handling the canoe before you set off, a map and clear instructions on where you need to alight. And best of all, as the scenery floats by, the logistics are all taken care of with your bags being moved effortlessly to the next hotel. And at the end of a day’s paddling you will be met by our friendly local agent or will simply lock up the canoe by the river near to your hotel - which is never far from the water’s edge. We have thought of everything so you can relax into your stroke, and why these trips - Canoeing on the Loire (B05LR) and Canoeing on the Dordogne (B08DO) - receive such great feedback.

HEADWATER.COM/B05LR CANOEING ON THE LOIRE

Gliding gently down this peaceful river, you will pass the châteaux of Chenonceau, Blois, Amboise and Chaumont. Whilst of the evening you can stroll the cobbled streets of charming riverside towns and delight over menus offering river caught sandre and bream, and well-earned desserts such as the sweet apple Tarte Tatin.

“ Weather was perfect; the Loire was beautiful and not too crowded with plenty of places to stop and picnic.”

VALUED CUSTOMER, CANOEING ON THE LOIRE (B05LR)

WHY NOT WALK, CYCLE AND CANOE IN THE SAME HOLIDAY?

On a multi-activity holiday you will enjoy the very best walking trails, cycling routes and often navigable waterways of your chosen destination. Depending on your itinerary, for each activity you will have the right instruction, easy navigation and all the equipment like the bikes and canoes needed to enjoy each day.

In addition to the Loire and Dordogne in France, on Canada’s Sunshine Coast you can witness the incredible marine life of the Sechelt Inlet as it awakens with a bioluminescent glow - a truly unforgettable experience! You can spot rare orchids around the shores of Austria’s Lake Nussensee; marvel at the evening’s bioluminescence illuminating the water around you in Canada, count all 17 waterfalls as you hike through Croatia’s Krka National Park; or cycle between 6 islands in Japan on a visually stunning and purpose built bike route. You are spoilt for choice for both activity and destination! Visit headwater.com/multi-activity

WORLD BICYCLE RELIEF

With every booking you make you are helping us raise money for World Bicycle Bicycle Relief. We are focussing our support on Uganda, where we are helping to mobilise health workers, entrepreneurs and female students. This innovative transport solution unlocks healthcare, education, and economic opportunity in remote, rural communities. Don’t just take our word for it, here are theirs…

Crucially, the durable bike is a lifeline beyond school; “I use it to fetch water and assist with household chores. It has become an essential tool in our household’s daily life.”

SARAH, COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKER

“I used to walk 8km, taking four hours per trip, exhausting me and straining family life.”

The Buffalo Bicycle has transformed her work. She now covers the same distance in two hours, reaching more homes. She also uses it for family tasks like fetching water. This reliable bike saves her money on transport, funding food and boosting their income. It's a life-changing tool for the whole family. “The bicycle has made my life easier in so many ways.”

“Headwater

is very proud to have raised over £14,400 this year, meaning that 2 local mechanics have been trained and 60 Buffalo Bicycles successfully distributed to the communities of Uganda - to people like Caroline and Sarah.”

Unfortunately transport to and from your holiday is the largest contributor of carbon, and flying is the worst mode of transport. However, there is something we can do about it. According to Eurostar taking the train from London to Paris produces around 2kg of CO2 per person, compared with 61.5kg by plane

– a 97% reduction. London to Brussels is a 96% saving. If you can’t rail all the way, where possible we will offer rail transfers rather than road, as we know – every action helps.

JUST THE TICKET

Tempted? Headwater can help. We can arrange your rail travel, just look out for the Travel by Train icon in our brochures or filter your search online for suitable trips or simply ask one of our friendly travel consultants. You may not have realised you can choose to go by rail one way and fly the other. Equally, if you are flying, we will happily recommend train transfers where possible, such as between the snowcapped peaks of Switzerland. Embrace this golden era of travel and reduce your footprint and increase your happiness.

FASCINATING THINGS TO SEE ALONG THE WAY

“ The app was excellent and made us feel extremely comfortable in the knowledge that we were always going the right way. Whoever created it, did a fantastic job.”
MR SLEIG H, CUSTOMER 2025

SPOKEN DIRECTIONS

You haven’t gone on holiday to stare at your screen. With our hand written audio directions (cues) you can put your phone in your pocket or bag and simply enjoy the views as you meander along the way. Just listen out for the next cue, which will expertly lead you through an upcoming turn. Free from a handset and untethered from the screen; just like having your own personal guide.

Our app doesn’t just provide directions, it is also a repository of useful information about the route. We call these ‘Points of Interest’; which is a rather formal way of saying ‘fascinating things to see’ along the way, things you may have walked or ridden right by otherwise. These could include a viewpoint, or a site of historical significance, among others. We love researching and sharing these gems, and customers tell us they really add to their holiday experience.

YOU'LL NEVER GET LOST AGAIN

Losing your way really isn't much fun. We've all been there — poring over a confluence of orange lines on the OS map, usually in pouring rain or scorching sunshine, with the slow dawning realisation that you should have taken that right fork three miles back! Fortunately, with the Headwater Navigation App, getting lost is a thing of the past. If you do happen to stray off route, the app quickly lets you know, allowing you to correct your course straight away.

4

ALWAYS ACCURATE AND UP TO DATE

We are constantly in touch with local partners and on the rare occasions where there are updates or diversions needed on our routes we simply ‘push’ them out to the app and you will receive them straight away. Simply hit the update button when on the hotel Wi-Fi and there you go. It doesn’t happen often, but with extremes of weather, we are always mindful of route conditions changing.

MOBILE DATA IS NOT REQUIRED

No mobile data is used when navigating using our app. This means you don't need to worry about any roaming charges whilst away. However, we recommend downloading the app and routes via Wi-Fi before you go on holiday, but the navigation itself uses radio satellite GPS. This works without needing internet connection or mobile signal, and because it uses satellites, it works perfectly even in remote locations, keeping you on track all the way.
