Roll on Technology From autumn term 2020, the school community seized the opportunities that technology afforded, both in and out of the classroom. by

rom the autumn term 2020, teachers began to use iPads in their classrooms to modernise the learning process. The school’s technology for learning forum (TLF), comprised of junior and senior school teachers representing their respective departments, made sure that these implementations were focused on the learning aspect, rather than opting for ‘technology for technology’s sake’. Now, the iPads have been issued to Third Form through to Upper Fifth Form. They appear to be working as a great new method of learning and teaching. Mrs Seaton-Burn, chair of the TLF, said about the rollout: “The rollout will provide teachers with another tool in their toolkits; every pupil having a device allows teachers to use modes of delivery and activities that 84 The Exonian 2021

The use of the technology allows for different benefits to be reaped, easily explained through the ‘SAMR’
model (substitution, augmentation, modification, redefinition), where technology can be used to either substitute traditional modes of teaching or augment and improve it, modify the task, or even completely redefine the task at hand. Of course, the iPads don’t just help teachers deliver their lessons, but also help the pupils take part in them! The variation and efficiency of activities in lessons seems to have been well received, and with so many possibilities, like taking part in Kahoot quizzes, making educational videos with iMovie, collaborating with Google Docs or simply independently researching topics."
