POKEMON GO TOPS THE IOS APP CHART The Augmented Reality sensation Pokémon Go, that had smartphone users hunting high and low around the world for the elusive creatures, has been named the most downloaded app in 2016 on Apple’s App Store. The groundbreaking game was also the most searched for term on Google over the past twelve months, and is thought to be directly responsible for a 200% increase in sales of Nintendo 3DS systems.

Pokémon fever shows no signs of abating either, as the latest instalments in the legendary franchise - Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon - sold a combined 1.5m units in their first week of release in Europe last November. Nintendo has confirmed that this is the most successful launch the series has seen in this part of the globe, and the 368,000 copies sold in the UK alone illustrate that interest in Pikachu and his friends is stronger than ever.

Another Nintendo favourite was also high on the app chart, as Super Mario Run became the most downloaded title on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. This all helped Apple record $20bn in sales on its App Store, which was an improvement of almost 40% over the previous year.

UK VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY EXPECTS STRONG GROWTH IN 2017 Around 90% of UK video game companies intend to grow their workforce in 2017, according to new research conducted by the video game trade association TIGA. ‘Our survey shows that games businesses in mobile, VR, PC and console are planning to increase investment and employment’ says TIGA CEO, Dr Richard Wilson.

The reported reasons for this confidence are the continued success of the UK games market, which is the 6th biggest in the world with over 31m gamers; the emergence of new platforms, such as tablets, smartphones, next generation consoles, VR and AR devices; plus the Video Game Tax Relief legislation.

This combination has led to 72% of the businesses that took part in the survey to state that their companies were performing well, with 50% predicting that investment in their organisations looked more optimistic now than twelve months ago.

‘2017 is set to be another exciting year for the UK video games industry,’ says Jason Kingsley OBE, TIGA Chairman and CEO and Creative Director at Rebellion. ‘We will see more start-ups, more existing firms expand and more innovation and growth in the sector.’

PC, SMARTPHONE, AND TABLET SALES EXPECTED TO REMAIN STEADY IN 2017 A new report from Gartner predicts that 2.3bn PC, smartphone and tablet devices are expected to ship worldwide in the next twelve months. This is almost exactly the same number as in 2016, albeit with movement in a few specific areas.

While the traditional PC market of desktops and low-cost laptops has seen a continued decline in recent years, something that is set to continue, Ultramobile devices, such as the Microsoft Surface Pro range, are predicted to grow in popularity and sales. In fact, Gartner is confident that the 49m premium Ultramobile units sold in 2016 will rise to 61m by the end of 2017. This will be bolstered by a growth of 3m additional sales in the tablet market, going from 165m to 168m.

Smartphones remain the most popular category. The mature markets may have settled into a regular upgrade pattern, but in emerging markets it seems the trend is to replace handsets more often as they are regarded as a user’s primary computing device. With this is mind global sales should reach 1.89bn units by the end of year, up 5m on 2016.

TOP TEN TECH PREDICTIONS FOR 2017 Juniper research has released its predictions for the ten most important areas of tech in 2017, and it contains a few surprises.

Top of the list is the moving of eSports into the mainstream. ‘Juniper recognises eSports as an entirely new industry with huge potential in terms of advertising and sponsorship’ says Juniper research analyst Lauren Foye. This will no doubt be bolstered by a move into traditional broadcasting, as Sky launches its new 24-hour eSports channel Ginx.

Juniper also expects to see a number of PayPal-style payment services appear, thanks to new PSD2 EU legislation which opens up the area to more providers. VR content creation is another high ranking item, as is the battle for dominance by the various competing voice assistants now on the market.

Much of the list comprises disruptive financial technologies, such Blockchain and Insurtech, but there were also expectations for new legislation around self-driving cars, the successful reinvention of the current console market with devices such as the Xbox Scorpio bringing 4K and high-end VR capabilities, and the increased use of Chat Bots in social media and customer transactions.

FUTURE REVENUES FROM BOXED COPY GAMES FALL IN 2016

Revenues from the physical games market dropped by 16.4% across 2016, according to new figures from the Entertainment Retailers Association. The reasons for the dip were reportedly down to a number of titles not performing as well as anticipated, alongside the inevitable diminishing returns from older console generation platforms.

While the figures make for grim reading they don’t represent the whole picture. Console and PC titles might have seen fewer buyers throughout the year, but the amount of physical handheld games sold actually saw an increase of 21.3%. This was aided in no small measure by the release of new Pokémon titles on the Nintendo 3DS that capitalised on the worldwide success of Pokémon Go. Digital sales were also on the rise, with revenue going from £1.9bn in 2015 to £2.2bn, an increase of 12.1%. This means that in overall terms the games market was worth £2.9bn, up by 2.9% from the 2015 figures. Comparing this to the music sector which brought in £1.1bn and video’s £2.3bn, shows that video games remain the most popular form of electronic entertainment in retail.

Latest figures predict that over 42m bluetooth speakers will be sold worldwide in 2016, raising the market value to around £3bn. This 23% increase is being strongly linked to smartphones due to the specific features customers are requesting.

The outdoor segment of the speaker market is seeing the biggest growth as consumers look for devices that are water resistant and shockproof. This suggests the intention to take speakers to parties, beaches, gardens, and other environments where they can stream music from their smartphones without the encumbrance of power supplies or bulky units. Another growing area is that of stereo pairing speakers that allow users to sync a couple of devices together and play their music in rich stereo.

HOW WILL RETAIL

LOOK IN 2017?

Whilst the internet has disrupted the way we look for and purchase a product, online retailing isn’t going to kill the bricks and mortar outlets. Indeed, it’s simply going to change the way customers interact with a store. Analysts tell us that three quarters of millennials research a product online before they make a purchase. Sales from mobiles and online sites continue to grow of course but there is still a high demand to physically touch, feel or experience a product before making a purchase, particularly in certain product categories.

In an increasingly digitised world, stores are utilising technology to enhance the store experience both physically and virtually. Moreover, innovation in technology is set to reduce some key customer pain points, increase customer service and create a much more personalised customer experience. Technology has already become a game-changer for the retail industry and here are some of the trends that might just change the way we shop.

Experts writing in The Future of Shopping report talk about the impact the “fourth industrial revolution” - a merging of physical, digital and biological technologies – might have on shopping, claiming virtual reality will replace the need for high street shopping by 2050. Probably more predictable will be that VR and AI will start to have more of a presence in-store and online, presenting a major opportunity for retailers to lure shoppers to choose their brand and make shopping more fun and personalised. Research from Sonar reported that 62% of millennials in the UK said they would appreciate a brand or retailer using this technology to show more interesting products and help to predict what they want.

Retailers will look to enhance the skills of their employees, providing them with the tools to support customers better by providing a more personalised service. Knowing what customers like, what they have bought and where they have browsed will provide upsell and cross sell opportunities. RFID goes beyond tracking inventory and reducing out of stocks, it enables better customer engagement in the store.

Assistants that can help guide their customers through the store and provide real time information will improve the shopping experience, whilst proximity and location technology will alert customers to offers and products that interest them.

With more consumers wanting to shop on the go, retailers and brands will need to ensure that their presence on mobile devices is an enjoyable purchasing experience. The ability to buy directly through social media will also be a trend to watch.

Cashless payments will continue to be more of the norm, particularly with contactless methods. This year will see an improvement in the technology to simplify swipe or touch payments from a smartphone.

If more ATMs start to charge customers for withdrawals, then expect this form of payment to escalate even quicker. Retailers will need to adapt to increased security requirements.

Delivery methods will also play a key role in maintaining customer satisfaction and loyalty. Customers will no longer accept an open window for delivery, missing a delivery or having to pick up their purchase at an inconvenient time or location. Whether drone delivery becomes more mainstream may well depend on safety concerns but experiments are likely to continue. However, those retailers that provide the right logistical support will certainly win out.

Stores will continue to experiment, with bricks and mortar retailers providing complementary concessions to brands and online retailers opening up showcase stores on the high street.

Fulfilling the customer’s omni-channel needs is clearly going to be a key driver for retailers. Those that adapt to these requirements will win the hearts and minds of the consumer.

NINTENDO SWITCH THE CONSOLE WITH ULTIMATE GET UP AND GO Legendary gaming giant Nintendo is about to release its next console generation, one that combines home entertainment, mobile gaming and sharing experiences with friends. It’s called the Switch and it could be the runaway success story of 2017.

HOME AND AWAY Connecting a console with a huge TV display and surround-sound is a fantastic way to game, but wouldn’t it be great if you could continue those adventures while out and about?

Nintendo are about to change all that, giving customers a full console experience that you can play on the go anytime, anywhere. It’s a new era where you don’t have to adjust your lifestyle to play games – instead, your console adjusts to fit around your lifestyle with three play modes.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch dock that connects the console to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting the Nintendo Switch console from the dock, it will instantly transition to

handheld mode. The same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. If you don’t have access to a TV, prop up the stand attached to the console and hand a Joy Con controller to a friend to play a co-op or competitive game right on the console screen.

SOCIAL GAMING IS BACK With games such as 1-2 Switch, a new play style is born, a collection of genius mini-games in which players look at each other and not the screen. WHAT TO EXPECT IN

THE YEAR AHEAD At the beginning of each year technology manufacturers and journalists make a pilgrimage to Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show.

Over several days the crowded exhibition halls are filled with the latest products and innovations that are destined to be the big news in the year ahead. 2017 was no different, and the Exertis team scoured the numerous stands to bring you the highlights of another fascinating CES.

STAR OF THE SHOW Few would have predicted that Amazon would have been one of the most influential companies at CES 2017, but thanks to the huge success of its Echo range of devices the revolutionary bookseller took centre stage.

Alexa, the voice control technology at the heart of Echo, has been opened up to third party manufacturers, and this meant that it was included in a number of new products. From TVs and audio systems to cars and smart home appliances, Alexa was listening.

One company that adopted Alexa with gusto was LG, which integrated the technology into a number of new products. The most eye-catching of these was the InstaView Refrigerator, whose simple and incredibly useful nature could finally see smart appliances become a reality in the home. Alexa was also employed by several other manufacturers; appearing in smart lamps, speakers, security cameras, a number of small domestic robotic devices, and Ford announced that it will feature as the voice interface in its new cars.

2017 really does look like it could be a massive year for Amazon’s humble helper.

IN-CAR TECHNOLOGY Alexa won’t have the car market entirely to itself, as BMW models are soon to include Microsoft’s Cortana, while Hyundai’s will feature the Google Home voice interface. There were also some interesting stand-alone products for drivers, including the new generation of Kaiser Baas dashcams – the R40 and R50. These feature gesture controls that enable users to quickly capture specific on-road actions by waving their hand rather than the potentially dangerous fumbling for buttons.

VR

TV AND AUDIO Another strong category this year was television.

Looking around the show i t it was hard to find a device being launched that wasn’t 4K, so it seems now that this will be the default for consumers going forward. The majority of new budget and midrange 4K offerings featured super-slimline designs, beautiful vivid displays and intuitive smart interfaces. These skinnier chassis obviously save space in the home but present challenges when it comes to providing the sound quality that modern consumers demand. It was good then to see the introduction of new Dolby Atmos-equipped audio products

by Sony, LG, and others. These soundbars deliver immersive audio for gamers and movie lovers, without the need for the multiple speakers that characterised early Atmos set-ups. They also present retail with genuine upsell opportunities that can be easily demonstrated in-store.

Of course one of the main selling points for 4K TVs is 4K content.

Thankfully this will be in larger supply across 2017 with subscription services such as Sky set to massively push 4K exclusives. In Sky’s case this will be predominately sport, alongside the hugely anticipated new series of Game of Thrones, but there will also be strong competition from the streaming giants Netflix and Amazon, each with their own 4K offerings. All of this adds up to the perfect time for consumers to upgrade to the new standard.

The biggest gasps in the audio/visual halls though were reserved for the gorgeous OLED TVs that are set to dominate the premium end of the market in 2017. Sony, Samsung and Panasonic all unveiled new models which received enthusiastic reports from the press, but it was the incredible ‘Wallpaper’ W7 TV from LG that garnered the most praise. This unit features a 77” 4K HDR display that’s so thin and light that you can actually stick it to the wall with magnets. There was no price announced at the show, but it’s thought that the amazing creation will retail for around £10K when released later this year.

Oddly enough that wasn’t the only TV to reach five figures, as HiSense announced a new flagship 100” 4K set that’s part TV, part short-throw projector. It will be on sale later this year for around the same price as the LG.

HDMI 2.1 Looking ahead to the future of TVs – and the sources that connect to them – a new HDMI standard was also announced at CES. HDMI 2.1 brings support for 8K, Dynamic HDR, plus a Game Mode VRR that allows variable refresh rates, thus reducing screen tearing and input lag when gaming. We expect to see a wide number of new products adopting the HDMI 2.1 standard in the coming months.

Virtual Reality was one of the big stories in 2016 and that will continue throughout 2017 thanks to a growing ecosystem of accessories. Some of the most useful on display were add-ons that make headsets truly wireless and a number of optimised headphones. Among the latter was the new Audeze iSINE VR, a fantastic set of earphones with bespoke connectors for the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive (plus 3.5mm connection for Sony PlayStation VR, smartphones and more). The ultra-lightweight design ensures VR users will enjoy awesome performance without heavy headphones, and with the product now being available it could well become the first essential VR purchase of the year.

On the content side of things HTC also announced a subscription service that it dubbed the ‘Netflix for virtual reality’, which should drive up demand for its VR systems.

LAPTOPS The resurgence of laptops was also notable at CES. From ultralight models to hybrid designs and gaming machines, there was an impressive range of innovative devices that should stoke interest in the market throughout the next twelve months. Razer even showed a concept gaming laptop with three screens. The mysteriously named Project Valerie features a trio of 17.3”, 4K screens that slide out to create a giant, widescreen display. It seems that the appeal of these groundbreaking machines proved too much for some, as two of the prototypes were actually stolen from the company’s CES stand!

THE BIGGEST PRODUCTS OF 2017 Without a doubt, two of the biggest products expected for 2017 weren’t actually at the show. The 10th anniversary iPhone is eagerly anticipated and will sell in massive numbers when it appears this September. While Samsung’s Galaxy 8 range is rumoured to have a radical new design and a renewed sense of purpose after the disastrous Note 7 recall that blighted the company’s fortunes in 2016.

One iPhone related product that did make its mark though was Stacked’s wireless charging ecosystem. These cases, battery packs, and speakers bring cable free charging to the iPhone and are sure to generate a lot of interest when they land on the UK shores in the very near future.

FEEL THE FORCE Finally, to misquote a rather famous screen villain, ‘if only you knew the power of licensed movie merchandise’. That’s right, Star Wars is big news once again and CES had a bewildering range of excellent, fun, and quality tech products from the massive film franchise. We expect these to have continued appeal throughout the year, especially as we near Episode VIII’s release on December 15th 2017.

So that was CES 2017. Amazon found its voice, TV resolutely entered the 4K era, VR continued its rise, while a host of other technology markets were bolstered by fine additions to their ranks. INTEL’S KABY LAKE PROCESSORS

SET TO POWER GAMING THROUGHOUT 2017 Intel® has unveiled its new 7th generation range of Core™ i7 processors, featuring improved performance, 4K video capabilities, and ready to take full advantage of the latest VR technology.

These updated processors, also known by the codename Kaby Lake, will be of particular interest to gamers, as the hardware follows in the footsteps of the popular Skylake generation which accounted for roughly 80% of the pre-built gaming market in 2016.

REFINING THE PROCESSOR Traditionally Intel® has adopted a two-step approach to its processor generations, known as Tick-Tock. The idea is that one year (Tick) it releases a version of the current generation design but moved to a smaller physical die. This would also usually involve improved power consumption alongside slight performance enhancements. Then in the Tock year it introduces a new microarchitecture design on the same size die.

With Kaby Lake Intel® has changed this approach by adding a third step during which processors are kept at the same size (currently 14nm) but heavily optimised. This is good news for system builders, as they can continue to use the same motherboards while moving up to the latest and greatest chips, but it also affords retail the clear message to consumers that buying a Kaby Lake system means they are getting the most refined processor experience available

THE NEW RANGE Kaby Lake comes in three Core™ i7 variants on the desktop and a similar triumvirate on mobile platforms. The desktop range all feature four-core hyperthreading to boost speed, support both DDR3L and DDR4 memory, plus come equipped with 8MB of on-board cache to ensure that multitasking is seamless. Hardcore gamers looking for the ultimate in performance will flock to the i7-7700K with its 4.2GHz clock speed that can be overclocked up to 4.5GHz. The two other members of the family are the 2.9GHz i7-7700T and its bigger brother the 3.6GHz i7-7700.

On the mobile side there’s the 2.8GHz i7-7600U, 2.7GHz i7-7500U, and 1.3GHz i7-7Y75, all of which boast 4MB of on-board cache, two cores and four threads for hyper-threading capabilities, plus support for LPDDR3, DDR3L and (with the exception of the 1.3GHZ model) DDR4 memory.

While it’s true that the performance of Kaby Lake chips won’t be a huge leap forward when compared to their Skylake predecessors, the new iterations offer noticeable improvements across the board.

There’s also the fact that no other major updates are due to appear from Intel® this year. This means retailers can clearly focus on promoting the new processors to their customers, assuring them that an upgraded model isn’t due to appear any time soon.

REFINING THE PROCESSOR Gaming enthusiasts always want the best in class when it comes to their machines, as fractions of a second can make all the difference in frantic online battles or high-speed racing duels. This constant desire for any advantage in performance means that we expect to see a very high adoption rate for Kaby Lake from gamers.
