love for Africa runs deep.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, she grew up surrounded by the rhythmic pulse of the continent. When she was seven, her family moved to the scenic town of George, nestled within South Africa's iconic Garden Route. This move deepened her appreciation for nature and adventure, setting the foundation for what would later become a lifelong passion for African travel. But it was a singular moment in Botswana in 1994 that changed everything—a moment that ignited a love affair with the African wilderness that would shape her career and inspire travelers from across the globe.

The De ining Safari Experience

Her irst safari wasn't a meticulously planned professional trip. Instead, it was a personal journey—an invitation to celebrate a friend's 21st birthday in the Okavango Delta. The experience was transformative. As she navigated through the pristine wetlands, surrounded by an 14 | MARCH 2025

untouched wilderness teeming with life, she knew she had found something extraordinary.

“This trip started my love affair with Africa,” she recalls. It wasn't just the wildlife or the landscapes—it was the feeling of being part of something far greater than herself.

Professional Evolution: From Corporate Travel to Boutique Safaris

At the time, Kirsty was working in the travel industry, specializing in incentive travel for corporate companies in South Africa. She coordinated luxury trips for groups of 20 to 200 people, curating experiences that blended adventure with comfort. Her expertise in crafting seamless travel experiences soon caught the attention of another company that focused on bringing international groups to South Africa for large-scale corporate events. She transitioned into event management, re ining her skills in hospitality and logistics. But something was

missing—something raw and real that called her back to the wilder side of Africa.

The Birth of an African Travel Vision In an era before online travel agencies became mainstream, Kirsty recognized an opportunity. She established her irst online travel business, curating package holidays across Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands. Yet, even as she built a successful company, her personal thirst for adventure never waned. She often embarked on camping safaris in Botswana, immersing herself in the untamed landscapes she loved. Then came an unexpected request—one that would pivot her career in a new direction. A client from the United States, inspired by her personal travels, asked to join her on one of her self-planned camping expeditions. That singular request led to the creation of her luxury glamping company, specializing in intimate, tailormade safaris.

Cover Story A Brief Detour: Aiming for the Beijing Olympics By 2006, another unexpected opportunity emerged—one that momentarily pulled her away from the travel industry. A talented equestrian, Kirsty was offered a chance to train and compete professionally in the UK, with the ultimate goal of qualifying for the Beijing Olympics as a representative of South Africa. She sold her travel business and moved to the UK, dedicating herself fully to the sport. But Africa's call was never far from her heart. When she returned home in 2008, she found herself at a crossroads. Would she return to the travel industry, or forge a new path? The answer came swiftly. “On re lection, I realized I loved traveling in Africa.

I loved helping people experience and explore Africa—so my decision was made. Africa and travel were my true loves.”

And so, Anywhere in Africa Safaris was born.

Building Strong Partnerships for Unmatched Experiences Kirsty believes that partnerships are the foundation of creating unparalleled experiences. “It helps when you've been in the industry for such a long time. You build trust and honesty with all the suppliers—lodges, ground handlers, and guides.”

To maintain the highest standards, she frequently visits destinations and lodges herself. In 2024 alone, she ventured to Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. Her next mission? Kenya and Uganda. “I've 16 | MARCH 2025

been wanting to revisit Kenya and Uganda since before COVID. This year, I want to focus on updates—checking out new lodges, revisiting Samburu National Park, Masai Mara, and Amboseli. In Uganda, I want to experience gorilla and chimpanzee trekking irsthand, explore Queen Elizabeth National Park, visit Murchison Falls, and even go Nile perch ishing.”

A Commitment to Conservation and Responsible Tourism Kirsty is deeply committed to conservation and community upliftment, ensuring that her business has a meaningful impact on the destinations it serves.

Curating Authentic African Experiences Kirsty's vision for Anywhere in Africa Safaris was clear from the start: to create boutique, highly personalized safari experiences that would not only showcase the continent's beauty but also inspire travelers to become ambassadors for Africa.

Having spent more than three decades in the travel industry, Kirsty has personally explored some of the most remote and breathtaking corners of Africa. This firsthand experience allows her to carefully curate each itinerary, ensuring that her

clients encounter the continent in the most authentic and immersive way possible.

“I focus on handpicking small boutique lodges and ground handlers in the various countries,” she explains. “The guides we use in each destination are vetted by the amazing ground handlers I partner with. We work with lodges and guides who are passionate about Africa and want to showcase the true African experience—somethin g that is authentic and real.”

Her leadership extends beyond her irm—through mentorship, strategic counsel, and groundbreaking initiatives, she continues to uplift the next generation of diverse

In this exclusive interview, Gills shares the pivotal moments that led her to intellectual property law, the lessons she's learned from integrating litigation expertise into high-value corporate transactions, and her vision for the future of IP law. She also discusses the impact of her leadership philosophy and the importance of cultivating meaningful relationships in both business and life.

What inspired you to pursue a career in intellectual property law, and how did your background in electrical engineering shape your approach to IP litigation?

STEM has long been a part of my world, and I could not run from it having a father with a Ph.D. in mathematics and a sister with a Ph.D. in optical physics. That said, a fortuitous pre-engineering program at Purdue University before my high school senior year led me on a similar path.

While I enjoyed electrical engineering at Michigan State University, I was unsure

whether working in an engineering lab was my forte, so I considered post-graduate studies in engineering, business, and medicine. Fortunately, the answer came via my internship session with 3M Company, which afforded me extensive time interacting with 3M's patent attorneys given the constant innovation occurring in my supervisors' labs. The intersection of law and science immediately captivated me. As I delved deeper, I discovered my passion lay in litigation—enforcing patent and IP assets in court, rather than simply identifying and procuring those rights in the irst instance.

Watching my father leverage his technical background in numerous 26 | MARCH 2025

ways inspired how I deployed my own technical training. Namely, my father not only taught math to students at HBCU institutions (e.g., Southern, Jackson State, and Howard universities), but also his substantive expertise and people skills led to engineering roles at AT&T and NASA and to becoming the irst Black member of Allentown, PA's School Board. As an IP litigator, my technical skills give me the con idence to tackle any technology. While my practice certainly involves a healthy dose of patent litigation, I likewise handle all types of IP disputes—including trade secret, trademark, trade dress, copyright, and false advertising litigation. My own “people skills” and ability to cultivate meaningful relationships

has allowed me to build teams within and outside of Foley, leading to a far broader IP practice than most. On any given day, the IP issues could just as easily concern patents on anti-dandruff conditioning shampoo or fuel vapor canisters to reduce evaporative emissions, as they could patents on apparel or AI technologies. Likewise, my career has involved counseling clients on trademark and trade dress protection for color and packaging designs and defending clients accused of false advertising based on product placement on retail shelves.

Growing up, I watched both my parents use their passions and natural abilities to also foster

career success. Giving back and championing others was also emphasized, which taught me the value of investing time to build meaningful relationships. Those relationships coupled with being a natural conversationalist and people-oriented person are traits that serve me well as a litigator.

How do you integrate your litigation expertise into advising clients on IP-driven transactions, such as the Kraft Foods split or high-value M&A deals?

Nearly 15 years ago, a former Fortune 100 deputy general counsel opened my eyes to how my work as a litigator could naturally add value to M&A teams. At the forefront of litigation is the management of risk. That skillset allows me to view a transaction from the standpoint of how any particular contractual language will be viewed if and when the parties' relationship ends and evaluate potential risks and proactively address them. To the extent that language can be clear and free of ambiguities from the outset, it can help minimize future disputes later or at least put my client in the superior position as to contract interpretation. My litigation background helps me think critically about how IP will or might be contested in the future, including via experience with IP ownership con licts, licensing issues, or validity challenges.

Whether the target's IP portfolio is free of roadblocks, such as prior adversarial proceedings, could undermine its value. Likewise, because complex transactions often involve splitting or transferring IP rights, the need to draft IP W W W. E X E L E O N M AG A Z I N E . C O M

ownership and license rights with clarity and enforceability in mind is paramount. Given the value of IP in many commercial transactions and the high costs of resolving most IP disputes, it is vital to have those IP provisions solid from the outset. At the end of the day, whether it is litigation or a transaction, I align the legal strategies to my client's overall business objectives.

Can you elaborate on the principles that guide your leadership, particularly with initiatives like “Team Impossible”?

While “Team Impossible” got its of icial name during COVID and at a time when I particularly wanted to recognize how hard my colleagues were working and performing at a high level even in those desperate times, the foundation for our team had started far earlier. Every company undoubtedly needs strong leaders, but it is our connections and relationships—with these leaders and with each other—that truly drive success. “Team Impossible” comprises a diverse group of over 60 attorneys, paraprofessionals, and business professionals from Foley's multiple of ices and operates under a motto inspired by Muhammad Ali's famous words: “Impossible is nothing …” when we support each other professionally and personally. As a team, we drive excellence, foster collaboration, and always push each other to be better.

A client's CEO recently noted that while all leaders strive to lead others to achieve the best outcomes, great leaders inspire because “following [that leader] is voluntary.” Through Team

Impossible, I too hope to inspire, not just our team but others within our irm more broadly. We work hard for our clients and sometimes at personal sacri ice. But when you work with people you like, do what you like, and see the fruits of that labor in how you make others feel and the results you achieve together, it makes it all worthwhile.

By building teams and engaging diverse perspectives within the broader community, it has enabled me to continuously grow my network of top legal and business talent, nurture those relationships, and leverage these connections to bene it others. Likewise, through hosting exclusive thought leadership and social events, I facilitate introductions, spark collaboration, and inspire innovation.

What role does mentorship play in your leadership style, and how do you cultivate growth within your team?

I am the product and bene iciary of phenomenal mentorship inside and outside Foley, a fact I know many others in Big Law cannot say. I therefore deeply value the mentorship that shaped my own career as one of the few irst-chair Black patent litigators in the country and a female equity partner and irm leader—including roles on Foley's IP Department leadership team and prior member of the irm's Management Committee and 2024 chair of its Compensation Committee. I therefore feel a strong responsibility to mentor, champion, and foster the next generation. I am equally passionate about supporting the professional growth of our clients by identifying and MARCH 2025 | 27

sourcing candidates for open inhouse counsel roles at all levels and assisting both law irm and inhouse attorneys transitioning to their next career opportunities. As a single mother to an adopted Black son, I also particularly enjoy mentoring women on balancing (juggling!) work and life, embracing the rewards of parenting, and mastering skills like multi-tasking, lexibility, stress management and selfcare—invaluable qualities for handling complex legal matters and life in general.

As a founder of Foley's African American Attorneys Af inity Group, the Black Patent Network, and the Chicago Black Partners Alliance, what motivated you to create these initiatives, and what impact have they had?

As a young girl, I watched my father persevere against racism to become one of the irst Black students to earn his Ph.D. in mathematics at Louisiana State University. Then and now, we have to ensure all people (regardless of race, gender, religion or orientation) have a level playing ield and an equal and fair opportunity to succeed. As a Black female engineer and AmLaw 50 irm leader, I want to minimize some of the obstacles I endured, though those same obstacles have undoubtedly made me more resourceful, resilient, creative, and adaptable. Regardless, championing diversity, equity, and inclusion is essential to leaving our world better than we found it.

While there is still much progress to be made, driving the legal profession toward greater diversity and inclusiveness through 28 | MARCH 2025

organizations such as these is necessary. Indeed, the success of Team Impossible stems from the diversity of our collective backgrounds and life experiences that allows us to better “think outside the box” and see things that others do not see. Team Impossible members now work with people they may not have naturally worked with before, especially after seeing what we have been able to achieve through our more inclusive approach.

With multiple leadership positions and a thriving litigation practice, how do you balance your responsibilities and maintain focus?

Honestly, some days are easier than others. Litigation is inherently demanding, so it requires a combination of prioritization, delegation, and a clear focus on outcomes and what truly moves the needle—whether it's a critical client matter, an internal initiative, or a leadership responsibility—and allocating my energy accordingly.

Effective delegation is key and Team Impossible shares a commitment to excellence. By trusting and empowering team members to take ownership, work progresses seamlessly, whether I am directly involved or not.

Regardless of my leadership roles, client service remains at the core of my practice. I make a conscious effort to stay deeply involved in high-stakes client matters and provide personal attention where needed while also trusting and empowering the team. Clear and candid communication ensures alignment and avoids bottlenecks.

It is also important to have fun, laughter, and joy, and a personal board of directors that can hold you accountable and make sure you remain your authentic self. I feel blessed to have family and friends that keep me grounded and ensure that even the work is fun, but also that there is life outside of work.

What innovations or changes would you like to see in the ield of intellectual property law in the coming decade?

From the perspective of both technology and diversity, the IP ield has immense potential for innovation and evolution in the coming decade. There needs to be clearer guidance on how AIenabled inventions and creative works are treated under IP laws.

Using tools like AI and blockchain to simplify processes can make them more accessible globally, particularly to innovators in underprivileged groups or remote parts of the world. Inconsistencies in IP protection and enforcement also create inef iciencies and risks.

Greater alignment of laws, particularly in fast-growing markets, would reduce barriers and foster innovation.

From a people perspective, law irms that remain dedicated to fostering diversity, inclusivity, and belonging will continue to succeed.

As a leader within Foley, I am not going to stop what I am doing because I have seen over the course of my career the wonderful things that come from having diverse teams.

A Passion Ignited Early

“Corporate law is not only intellectually stimulating, but it also allows me to make an impact by helping businesses operate smoothly, comply with regulations, and resolve disputes ef iciently,” she re lects.

The dynamic nature of the corporate legal landscape, where every day presents new challenges across different industries, motivated Aakanksha to step into a ield where her problem-solving skills could thrive.

Aakanksha's desire to become a lawyer began as early as her eighth-grade year.

While many children are still exploring their interests at that age, Aakanksha had already developed a fascination with the legal system. However, it wasn't just the practice of law that intrigued her; she was equally drawn to the inner workings of businesses and the dynamics of corporate

“I always ensure that my team understands the bigger picture.

When people see how their individual roles it into the overall objective, they are more motivated and con ident in their work,” she says.

Adaptability is another cornerstone of her leadership style. In the fast-paced corporate world, challenges are inevitable.

Aakanksha encourages her team to embrace change and approach problems with creativity and lexibility. This adaptability has not only helped her team overcome obstacles but has also fostered innovation within her organization.

Accountability is the inal piece of Aakanksha's leadership philosophy. She believes that a culture of accountability starts at the top. By taking ownership of her decisions and actions, she sets a standard for her team. “When everyone holds themselves accountable, it strengthens the entire team's sense of responsibility and pride in our work,” she emphasizes.

The Qualities That De ine a Successful Lawyer

Having navigated the demanding world of corporate law, Aakanksha has identi ied several key qualities that every lawyer must possess to excel. At the top of the list is attention to detail. “Law is often about getting the small things right. Whether it's a clause in a contract or a precedent in a case, 32 | MARCH 2025

missing the iner points can lead to signi icant consequences,” she explains.

Strategic thinking is another critical skill. Corporate lawyers are not merely problem solvers; they must anticipate potential risks and craft long-term solutions that align with their client's business objectives. This requires not only a deep understanding of legal frameworks but also insight into market trends and the broader business landscape.

Lastly, strong communication skills are indispensable. Aakanksha highlights that the ability to convey complex legal concepts in simple, clear terms is vital. Corporate clients often do not have a legal background, making it crucial for lawyers to bridge the gap between legal intricacies and business realities.

“When you balance attention to detail, strategic thinking, and communication, you not only safeguard your client's interests but also add value to their business,” she notes.

A Message to Aspiring Lawyers For those embarking on their legal careers, Aakanksha offers invaluable advice: embrace the journey with curiosity, humility, and a commitment to continuous learning. She stresses that success in law does not come overnight. It is a gradual process that requires patience, persistence, and a willingness to grow with each experience.

“Don't expect to know everything from day one. Focus on building a strong foundation—be it in your

legal knowledge or professional relationships,” she advises.

She also reminds young lawyers of their broader responsibility towards society. Lawyers hold a position of in luence, and with that comes an obligation to promote fairness, transparency, and ethical practices. Whether working in corporate law, criminal justice, or public policy, legal professionals have the power to drive positive change.

“Never lose sight of your sense of purpose. The work we do can be challenging, but at the end of the day, we are here to make a difference. Keeping that in mind will guide you through even the toughest days,” she says.

One of the biggest hurdles Ivana faced in her early career was self-con idence. The modeling industry is notorious for its emphasis on appearance, and it's easy to fall into the trap of constant comparison.

“Building my con idence was the toughest part,” she shares. “It's so easy to look at other models and feel like you're not good enough, but over time, I learned that being authentic and trusting my own value was far more important than trying to it into an industry standard.”

For Ivana, self-worth had to come from within. Instead of changing herself to meet unrealistic expectations, she embraced her individuality. This shift in mindset was transformative, allowing her to grow both as a model and as a person.

I realized that my unique background in medicine, mental health, and leadership positioned me perfectly to bridge the gap between people and technology. By earning certi ications in AI medicine and AI ethics, I deepened my understanding of how AI works and, more importantly, how it impacts individuals and organizations.

Now, as an AI consultant, I focus on helping companies and leaders prevent AI burnout and embrace these tools with con idence. My mission is to show that technology, when approached thoughtfully, does not have to replace human effort but can enhance it—allowing us to work smarter, not harder. It is an exciting space where I get to combine my love for teaching, innovation, and creating meaningful change.

You emphasize the ethical use of AI in the workplace. How do you integrate this focus into your consulting and training programs?

Drawing inspiration from her personal experiences, particularly rehabilitating her irst Romanian rescue dog, Zara, Liz has developed a unique coaching philosophy that emphasizes the importance of calm leadership and the profound impact of our emotional states on those around us.

In this exclusive interview, Liz Clifton shares the origins of her mission, the essence of calm leadership, and how her work with rescue animals has shaped her coaching methods

Your coaching philosophy centers on empowering individuals with clear, calm, connected con idence. Can you describe what initially inspired this mission?

Yes of course, thanks so much for asking.

Whilst rehabilitating our irst Romanian rescue dog Zara, I discovered that I too was historically low in con idence, trust of others and was staying silent rather than using my voice. As we slowly grew W W W. E X E L E O N M AG A Z I N E . C O M

our own individual self-con idence through silent calm connection and gentle loving companionship, we both began to enjoy being ourselves.

After months we heard Zara bark for the very irst time ever and I too began to use my voice to support those around me. I believe that when we can create our own clear, calm, connected con idence with ourselves we are then able to create and strengthen it with others too. It was in fact during a moment of silent Animal Reiki relaxation meditation that the take34u mission and Family Dog Connection Limited ideas came to me. In our calm connection, my creativity grew alongside Zara's playful inquisitive natural instincts and personality. I knew there and then that I got to support others to ind their own way and ease their transformational journeys.

How do you de ine calm leadership and why do you believe it is essential in today's fast-paced world?

For me, calm leadership is the ability to lead from a space of calm. When you are calm everything is clearer for you. You can view things from a neutral calm perspective free from any old bias or emotional attachment. Being able to take a moment anywhere at any time to pause and calm yourself is a magni icent attribute of a great leader. To me the greatest leaders in all areas of life lead

from this space of calm. It's a tremendous strength to be able to strive for a sense of calm in any situation as it gives you the opportunity to choose your next action or step forwards.

Calm leadership empowers you to connect to those around you, of any species, with unconditional compassion, empathy, clarity and kind con idence.

This helps you to create and enjoy strong relationships that are based on calm active listening and fair unbiased treatment which leads to success for all individuals concerned. Calm leadership offers you the chance to step out of the busy fast-paced world that we live in so that you can enjoy the present moment, choose the important areas of your life that you want to focus on, and lead yourself and all areas of your life with natural ease and low.

You mentioned the profound impact of rehabilitating rescue animals on your own healing process. Can you share more about how this experience translates into your coaching methods?

Thanks so much for such a thoughtful question. Rescuing animals offers us a unique mirror of our own behavior, emotions, feelings and energy. If you wake up feeling a bit tired or frustrated it's likely that your rescue animal or other pet will exhibit a different behavior than when you are feeling relaxed, calm and content. So, where my clients have pets, I often get them to notice how their feelings are mirrored by their animals. This is a great place for them to consider how their feelings are affecting their behavior.

Where clients don't have pets, I still use rescue animals as an example for story purposes as it is still supportive for people to start to consider how they have a choice on how they choose to feel 48 | MARCH 2025

and behave. Where they instead live with or interact with people at home or regularly, I get them to notice how their mood changes the behavior of those around them. Rescue animals also show innate natural instincts readily and openly which I share with my clients to help them start to consider their own natural needs, wants and desires.

This initial self-awareness is a great foundation to start building self-acceptance, selfunderstanding, self-forgiveness and self-love. All of which play a huge part in choosing, planning, creating and achieving the changes that you want to make in all areas of your life.

How do you tailor your coaching techniques to suit the diverse needs of your clients, considering you aim to empower individuals of any species?

At my initial session, I evaluate what the individual client wants and needs. From there I then tailor a bespoke coaching experience using my vast range of skills to address their speci ic needs.

The initial work usually centers around releasing their historic emotional baggage/limiting beliefs, fears, hurt, sadness, loss, and stress so that they can begin to rebuild their connection to themselves and those around them alongside their calm con idence.

The next step is to then work on sharing skills, techniques, practices, and resources with

them. So that they can begin to use and enjoy them immediately and, in the future, to release ongoing emotions and enjoy making their ongoing choices with ease and con idence.

As someone who has already guided thousands, what strategies do you employ to measure the success and impact of your coaching?

For individual clients I measure their own initial wellbeing scores in all areas of their life against their personal scores at the end of their sessions. For groups, I measure the number of session and program completions alongside their own wellbeing scores from the beginning and end of their sessions. I also measure any referrals from individual clients.

Looking forward, what are your primary goals for the next ive years in your coaching practice?

In the next 5 years, I will complete my bespoke accredited calm leadership program to support others to develop their own calm leadership in all areas of their lives. I will also achieve at least another 1,500 completed calm leadership students with me personally who will then be able to share their new skills with those around them.

I will also have supported at least another 50 individual clients to complete their bespoke transformation coaching experiences and will have employed at least 10 calm leadership mentors to share my accredited calm leadership

program across the UK and beyond.

What advice would you give to someone who is just starting their career in coaching or leadership?

Trust yourself. Take time to truly connect with what you want to achieve with your coaching or leadership career. You could ask yourself this simple question "For what purpose coaching or leadership?" Notice what comes up for you and continue asking yourself "For what purpose x?" until you have a good understanding of your drive for your new coaching or leadership career.

Based on your answers, choose if you want to work for yourself or with a company, charity, or organization as each of them will require a different type of training quali ication, insurance, accreditation, and professional body membership. Always reach out for support as many of us have walked this path just like you and are happy to help you choose the best path for you. Above all else ensure that you enjoy what you do. Coaching and leadership roles offer you the chance to make a big difference in people's lives but always remember to look after yourself irst. Look after your health and wellbeing, by giving yourself daily joy, rest, and relaxation as that will always empower you to help others to the best of your ability.

As a coach, what are some of the biggest challenges that you have faced in your journey?

My twin 3-year old daughters. Having kids has absolutely changed the way I see the world and the lessons and strategies I give my clients "trying to do it all". I have truly learned that there is no such thing as work-life balance but instead there needs to be a sway and alignment to work-life integration.

I started working with Brown University's General Surgery department 5 years ago. At the time their wellness program consisted of yoga and meditation, and it was not landing. When I stepped into the role, leadership and I collaborated on an operational de inition for wellness in surgery (which if you know any surgeons you know how well "wellness programs" go over with them).

Here we were able to create a fullbodied program that viewed wellness through the lens of selfawareness, self-governance, and self-improvement for individuals and the team at large. Five years later we have a full bodied curriculum focus on the gamut of performance, wellness, and leadership strategies for residents, jr attendings and senior attendings at every stage of the career. This also includes a newly formed Leadership Lab, Mentorship Program, didactic lecture series, executive coaching, division retreats, and research efforts to continue to expand and improve. It has been truly a collaborative effort between hard and soft science to focus on addressing burnout and non-technical skill development in the world of medicine.

How do you measure the impact of your coaching on your clients or teams?

At Brown we do robust research efforts that include qualitative and quantitative inquiry which also includes focus groups, and longitudinal studies.

What advice would you give to other women aspiring to be leaders in the coaching industry?

When I was fresh out of college, my boss told me that "what I wanted to do didn't exist" and "I would be better sticking to what I knew". You are allowed to Frankenstein together a career that doesn't exist but works for you and the people around you. Keep pushing ahead and innovating in a direction that you can make an impact in.

What are your future goals for your business and brand? What is your vision through coaching?
