Collegewasbetter,asmyschoolhadagreat oncampuscounselingcenter,butonceIwas outofschool-whetheritwasforasemester orpost-graduation-indingexternal supportwasnearimpossible.Ihadno money,hadtopayoutofpocket,andgot placedinmonths-longwaitlistswithno hopeofgettinganysupportwhenIneeded it.AndIwasn'talone-mostofmyfriends weregoingthroughsimilarstrugglesand didn'torcouldn'tgetanyhelpwhenthey neededitmost.Iknewsomethingneededto changeinthewayweaddressmentalhealth struggles.

You created MARCo to help teens and young adults struggling with mental health. What was the innovation that went behind creating this interactive robot?

ThetwobiginnovationsbehindMARCo wereitsconversationaldesignandits physicalformfactor.Workhadbeendone beforeondevelopingchatbotsformental healthcare,butwhatwe'vetriedtodois stepbeyondasimplechatbotinteraction. WedesignedMARCo'sconversationstobe long-formtomimicrealhumaninteractions.

Chatbotshavehadthelimitationof onephraseinputandonephrase output,butMARCo'sdialoguesare moredynamic.Iftheuserwantsto talktoMARCofor30minutes straightwithoutinterruptionas theyrantabouttheirday,theyhave thatoption.We'vepushedthe envelopeintermsofthelimitsof conversationalAItomakeitas intelligentaspossible.
