Excel Society

We are people who care about people.

Will you enrich a life?

O ur S tory In 1923, the Hospital for the Insane in Ponoka (AB) reached its capacity due to the influx of soldiers returning from The Great War. The Province of Alberta responded by building the Alberta Hospital Edmonton, who treated most of those then diagnosed “chronically insane thereafter, and who also started intentionally integrating patients into their community following a stay in care. Seeking improved long-term care outcomes, Alberta Hospital Edmonton pioneered a community integration project 55 years ago serving 15 clients out of the basement of the Robertson-Wesley United Church. That initial project grew and matured, and eventually became the Excel Society.

6

Excel Society

We now directly care for over 550 people living with disabilities and complex mental health needs each year in Edmonton and Calgary, and employ almost 900 staff on our team.

Excel Society

Edmonton We are a proud Alberta-based organisation. Our story begins in the City of Edmonton, but our impact can be felt across our incredible province. In Edmonton, we operate 30 unique person-centered community group homes, 2 secure designated living facilties, and 2 large day programing centers. We are one of the largest and most impactful service providers in Alberta.

Calgary Since 2005 the Excel Society has proudly served the City of Calgary by providing community living supports in 5 additonal group homes that adhere to the highest standards of quality, safety, and service excellence. The Excel Society has been on an unprecendented growth trajectory, and as we strive for our new vison, our hope is that you will help us make an even larger impact.

O ur C lients

Who are the clients of the Excel Society? Our clients come from every walk of life, but all of them are looking for a safe, supportive, and adapted place to live in the community in a supported way. Our clients often want an alternative to living in a hospital, and wish to live more indepentently in the community with supportive professional care.

10

Excel Society

Clients and residents of the Excel Society live with many different mental health issues and diagnosis, which can include developmental disabilties, autism, brain injury, Huntington’s Disease, Schizophrenia, Personality Disorder, and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder to name a few.

Since I started living with the Excel Society Iggulden House, “I haven’t had a seizure for a long time from what I can remember, I haven’t had an ambulance come and take me to the hospital...”

EXCEPTIONAL CARE

We prioritize Exceptional Care. There’s a difference between ordinary care and exceptional care, and that difference is felt by our clients and their families. We partner with our clients, their families, and our funders, to provide the best possible care and to be the Service Provider of Choice. As an industry leader, we are always exploring new ways to provide exceptional care by enriching the lives of the people in our care. We listen to our clients and their families and work to create enriching opportunities for joy, connection and meaning in life, and this improves the quality of our care. We believe everyone needs comprehensive care and personal support for a developmental disability or complex mental health diagnosis. We start from the perspective that every person is unique and has their own individual needs and goals, and we work with people to help them achieve their own physical, emotional, and psychological wellness on their terms.

We prioritize Meaningful Engagement. When people are engaged, you can feel it. Everything they do feels more intentional, authentic, and personal. We engage each other as people who share a common vision. We foster a culture of appreciation and recognition that achieves the highest possible employee engagement and satisfaction. We create opportunities for our entire team to actively participate in the Excel Advantage, and to feel supported as individual leaders that have the power to help us achieve our vision. Meaningful engagement can take many different forms, but at its core, it’s about making each interaction count between all people. We take care of our team, because it’s the right thing to do, and we know that meaningful engagement improves the overall quality, safety, and care we provide.

MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT & CEO 2018 was focused on The Excel Advantage, a strategic plan that was more than a year in the making. It is designed to build the foundation for future growth and to engage our entire team. Our strategy is built on the four pillars of: • • • •

Exceptional Care, Meaningful Engagement; Forefront; and Organizational Stewardship.

At its core, it is about providing the best care possible, while treating each other the way each of us deserves to be treated. It is about being leaders, being innovative and always keeping the future of Excel Society in mind. It is a Strategy designed for every member of our team to be able to participate. 2018 was also the year we truly began to see the reward of the previous growth strategy. The initiatives we took during that period were designed to allow us to take advantage of economies of scale and in 2018 we can proudly say all financial metrics are pointing in the right direction. I am also proud of the work we are doing with our funders. We are actively involved in the initiatives of the Council of Service Providers where we are building an enhanced relationship with PDD. We also continue to grow in our relationship with Supportive Living as we work with them to achieve the delivery of Exceptional Care. I am so very proud to be part of a dedicated team at Excel and that of course includes our immensely talented Senior Leadership Team. I am grateful for their support and enthusiasm. I am equally as thankful for the support of an amazing Board of Directors.

BRAD PERKINS President & CEO

MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD CHAIR In 2018 the new Strategy for Excel Society was implemented. The Strategy, called “The Excel Advantage is a very powerful initiative based on engaging all of the members of the Excel team to make a difference and it will set the foundation for the Society for well into the future. The Board is looking forward to the execution of the Excel Advantage and the new dashboard that is being designed to provide it with the information necessary to know the success of this new direction. Also in 2018 Excel continued its momentum toward a positive financial position and while there is still significant work to do, I am thrilled that we have seemingly turned the corner, realized on our former growth strategy and built a platform to continue the important work we do. Heather Rogers joined the Senior Leadership team in June of 2018 as the new Director of Finance and we could not be happier with the seamless transition to Heather as she takes on this important role with Excel. She follows in the footsteps of Jim McCutcheon who retired at the end of the year. We wish Jim all the best in this next phase of his life and I would like to thank him for his years of contribution to Excel. 2018 was also a year of continued enhancement of the Board Governance. I would like to thank the Governance Committee, the Audit Committee and of course, the Board at large for all of its hard work. It is truly a pleasure working with you as we set the direction for a very prosperous future for Excel.

COLLEEN SCOTT Chair, Board of Directors
