Message from MS KRUGER

Who is your favourite author? I asked Mr Doyle and this was his answer:

Douglas Adams Wrote The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy I like this book very much as it is funny and Sci-fi – my 2 favourite genres perfectly blended into one great read! It also contains the answer to the ultimate question: the answer to life, the universe and everything!

Attendance at EWS

EWS attendance expectations: attendance should be over 95% and with no lates to school. Supporting good attendance is the most crucial factor in both your child staying safe and achieving academically. Attendance which goes below 90% is considered persistent absenteeism: in this instance the school is required to take action and work with home to get the child's attendance up to over 90%. As parents/carers you can monitor your child’s attendance on the schoolgateway app and their attendance and punctuality on firefly.

Firefly

EWS uses firefly as a way to provide students and parents/ carers with clear guidance about work beyond the classroom. There are specific homework tasks set by the teacher with fixed deadlines and also optional further learning activities such as reading lists and past exam papers. Parents/carers should click on the link below or on the school website to sign up to firefly if they have not already done so and can contact Mr Pallister on the school number if they have any issues with signing up.

Schoolgateway

EWS uses the schoolgateway as the main method to send information and messages home to parents/carers. Parents/ carers are strongly advised to download the app. Parents/ carers need to check both the app and their email to stay up to date. The schoolgateway is also used to make payments for school lunches and trips. Parents/carers should click on the link below or on the school website to sign up to firefly if they have not already done so and can contact Mr Pallister on the school number if they have any issues with signing up.

Other Notices

If you have an older child or family member that attended EWS and is now in employment and would be interested in sharing their careers journey within our school community please could you ask them to email office@ellenwilkinson.ealing.sch. uk for the attention of Mr. Bolt (AHT Careers Lead) or Ms Gibson (Careers Co-Ordinator) to arrange a suitable time. EWS want to celebrate our alumni and share motivating careers journeys with our current students to help inspire their futures. We look forward to hearing from you.

Live Parent Sessions

We know parents and supporters will be there every step of the way. The University of Portsmouth have live sessions to ensure parents and carers are in the perfect position to help support their child's journey to university.

The new sessions look at student finance applications – a key milestone in the months ahead. And for parents of year 12 students, they delve into the equally daunting task of picking a university and course. Click on the link to find out more and to book your place in the live sessions.

Ealing Borough Trampolining Competition

Five students from Year 9 and 10 took part in the annual borough trampolining competition last week at Drayton Manor High School. Along with a group of Year 9s and our Year 7 Specialist Place Students they completed two masterclass sessions with National Coach John Wotherspoon prior to the competition. Their hard work and training paid off and all five students performed their rountines with minimal or no errors- which included back and front somersaults. Martha Topping in Year 9 finished in silver place in the elite category and was also award team silver alongside Marina Erturk Year 10. Year 9s Grace McIntyre, Helena Collazo and Kiara Thompson collectively won team bronze in the intermediate category. Well done girls!

Year 10 French and Spanish GCSE classes took part in a theatre project in January and February 2023. We first studied extracts from the scripts and read a synopsis in class. We then travelled by coach to Dormers Wells High School where we joined their students, plus students from Villiers High School, in watching the theatre productions performed by professional actors from France and Spain! They were really entertaining and included some audience participation – some of our students got involved and did really well! In a following lesson students then wrote a review of the play in French or Spanish – see examples below! The whole experience was both enjoyable and culturally enriching for our students, as well as being a superb opportunity to develop their listening skills and widen their vocabulary.

Congratulations to fantastic performance from Devina, Tamseel and Aaminah at the Ellen Wilkinson live girls' chess tournament on Sunday 26th February. Pictured with five times British Chess Champion and International Master Harriet Hunt.

Behaviour for learning focus for the week 27.2.23 March is reward and celebration month at EWS! Let’s make it a good one! These are: I have been studious I have been creative I have been active • I have been enthusiastic • I have been kind Teachers will hand out stickers and once a students hascompleted their reward card they hand it into their form tutor. They can then start another card. The form in each year with the most completed cards will be the winner.
