Τα όρια του κενού
Ο Μιχάλης Αμάραντος μοιάζει ζωγράφος του οικείου, των απλών υλικών και των ιδιωτικών διαστάσεων, καθρέφτης των μικρών στιγμών. Άνθρωπος των συνηθειών, αγαπά το χαρτί, το μολύβι και το κάρβουνο, τα παστέλ και τις τέμπερες, γιατί τον απελευθερώνουν από τους περιορισμούς ενός συγκεκριμένου τόπου και χρόνου της ζωγραφικής πράξης. Σαν βγαλμένη μέσα από τις ζωγραφιές του, η ψηλόλιγνη φιγούρα του βρίσκει το αντίκρισμά της στα πολυάριθμα κεφάλια των τωρινών έργων του που παραπέμπουν σε μια ευγένεια άλλων καιρών και άλλων ρυθμών. Αν στις προγενέστερες συνθέσεις κυριαρχούσαν οι πολύχρωμες νεκρές φύσεις, τα τραπεζάκια τσαρουχικών καταβολών και τα μπαλκόνια της μεγάλης αγάπης του για τον Matisse, στις τωρινές εικόνες του Αμάραντου τα μονοχρωματικά ή ασπρόμαυρα ανθρώπινα πρόσωπα αποτελούν το σχεδόν αποκλειστικό θέμα. Ζωγραφισμένα με έντονα τα μάτια, τη μύτη και τα χείλη, σαν πληθωρικά πορτρέτα Φαγιούμ σε προφίλ, ή σαν πουδραρισμένα προσωπεία ηθοποιών, τα πρόσωπα αυτά υπερκαλύπτουν αποκομμένα από το σώμα τους την επιφάνεια του χαρτιού ή αρκούνται στον χώρο που τους έχει δοθεί. Σχεδιασμένα άλλοτε με γραμμές υπαινικτικής λεπτότητας, συχνά αμφίμορφα, εκμεταλλεύονται το άσπρο του χαρτιού για να επικρατήσουν στο μέσο νυχτερινών τοπίων μιας ολότελα διαφορετικής κλίμακας. Καθώς αντικρίζουν τις μάσκες τους, περιβάλλονται από αναπάντεχες γυμνές φιγούρες, μαρμαρωμένα σκυλιά και ρολόγια σταματημένων χρόνων. Κάποτε ανήκουν σε ανθρωπόμορφους κορμούς που ίπτανται στον αέρα ή συντροφεύονται από πουλιά. Συνωστίζονται πλάι σε άλλα κεφάλια που το βλέμμα τους δεν θα το συναντήσουν ποτέ. Κενές σιλουέτες προτομών, σαν ανέκφραστες κούκλες βιτρίνας, περιστοιχίζονται ερήμην τους από μελίσσια προσώπων και προσωπείων που πολιορκούν το περίγραμμα της κενής μορφής τους.

Ο Αμάραντος ανασύρει στο χαρτί του μνήμες ονείρων, ζωγραφίζει άγνωστα πορτρέτα, δεν αποτυπώνει αυτό που βλέπει γύρω του. Παράδοξα, οι τεχνικές του βλέμματος αποτελούν το κλειδί για τη θέαση των περισσότερων από τις τωρινές εικόνες του. Σαν την παλιά οφθαλμαπάτη με το βάζο και τα πρόσωπα, στα ζωγραφικά αυτά πορτρέτα προτείνονται διαρκώς διττές σημασίες όγκων και μορφών, διττοί τρόποι οπτικής πρόσληψής τους. Οι μορφές ορίζονται από τον άδειο χώρο ανάμεσά τους, ο οποίος την ίδια στιγμή σχηματίζει μια άλλη, αυτόνομη, μορφή. Οι όγκοι αλληλεπικαλύπτονται παίζοντας με το κενό, οι σιλουέτες διαμορφώνονται από τη σκιά τους, το θετικό αναδύεται από το αρνητικό, το υπαρκτό υπάρχει χάρη στο ανύπαρκτο. Αλληλένδετα περιγράμματα στον χώρο, τα γλυπτά του Αμάραντου προκύπτουν και αυτά μέσα από την ίδια διαδικασία: ανάμεσα στις παρυφές του συμπαγούς μετάλλου και σε αυτό που υπάρχει πέρα από τις άκρες του, στα σύνορα ύλης και κενού, σχηματίζονται γραμμικά γλυπτικά προφίλ που θέτουν ατέρμονα οπτικά αινίγματα. Στην ήπια αυτή ζωγραφική, των πλάγιων όψεων, οι εντάσεις μοιάζει να μην έχουν θέση. Όμως στα ονειρικά προφίλ των σιωπηλών προσώπων που ολοένα ζωγραφίζει ο Μιχάλης Αμάραντος υπάρχει η επίγευση ενός βάρους, η υποψία μιας εσωτερικής ζωής στο άλλο μισό που δεν απεικονίστηκε, το μυστικό που κρύβει το χαρτόνι που κόπηκε. Σε αυτά τα θραύσματα χαρτιών το μαύρο γίνεται ο ρυθμιστής των μορφών που γεννιούνται στα όρια του κενού, γίνεται το μαύρο σε εκείνα τα «πίσω δωμάτια του νου» (Ν. Χουλιαράς). Ελισάβετ Πλέσσα

The Borders of the Void
Michalis Amarantos appears to be a painter of the familiar, of simple materials and private dimensions, a mirror of small moments. Being a man of habits, he is fond of paper, pencil and charcoal, pastels and tempera because they release him from the constraints of some specific place and time of the painting act. As if rising from inside his paintings, his tall and slender figure finds a match in the numerous heads of his current works, reminiscent of a courtesy of past times and past rhythms. If his earlier compositions were dominated by colourful still lifes, coffee tables with origins that go back to Tsarouchis and the balconies of his great love for Matisse, in the present images of Amarantos the monochromatic or black-and-white human faces are an almost exclusive theme. Eyes, nose and lips painted in a striking manner, like Fayum portraits in profile, or powdered actors' masks, these faces overspread, detached from their bodies, on the paper surface or pose content in the space they are given. Occasionally drawn with lines of suggestive subtlety, often amphimorphic, they seem to take advantage of the blankness of the paper to prevail amid nocturnal sceneries of an entirely different scale. As they confront their masks, they are surrounded by unexpected naked figures, petrified dogs and clocks of halted time. They belong to anthropomorphic torsos which hover in the air or are accompanied by birds crowding beside other heads whose gaze they are never meant to meet. Empty bust silhouettes, like lifeless shop-window mannequins, stand unaware of the swarms of tiny faces and masks that surround them and besiege the contour of their empty form.

Amarantos revokes on his paper memories of dreams, paints unknown portraits, does not depict what he sees around him. Paradoxically, gaze techniques are the key to viewing his current images. Like the old trompe-l'oeil game with the vase and the faces, these portraits are constantly suggesting dual meanings of mass and figures, dual ways for their visual perception. The figures are defined by the empty space between them which, at the same time, forms another, autonomous figure. Masses overlap playing with the void, silhouettes are shaped by their shadow, the positive rises from the negative, the existing exists owing to the non-existing. Interwoven contours in space, Amarantos's sculptures also emerge from the same process: in-between the fringes of solid metal and what lies beyond its ends, at the borders of matter and void, linear sculptural profiles are formed, which pose infinite visual enigmas. In this mild painting, of side views, tensions seem to have no place. Yet, in the dream-like profiles of silent faces that Michalis Amarantos paints time and time again there is a lingering flavour of a burden, the hint of an inner life in the other half that was not depicted, the secret that is hidden in the cardboard that was cut. In these fragments of paper, black becomes the adjuster of figures born at the borders of the void, it becomes the black in those “back rooms of the mind� (N. Houliaras).

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES
Ο Μιχάλης Αμάραντος γεννήθηκε στην Ερμούπολη της Σύρου το 1953. Σπούδασε ζωγραφική στην Ανωτάτη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών, με δασκάλους τον Δημήτρη Μυταρά, τον Δημοσθένη Κοκκινίδη, καθώς και σκηνογραφία με τον Βασίλη Βασιλειάδη. Έργα του βρίσκονται στις συλλογές της Εθνικής Πινακοθήκης, του Μουσείου Φρισύρα, της Εθνικής Τράπεζας, καθώς και σε άλλες δημόσιες και ιδιωτικές συλλογές. Ζει και εργάζεται στην Αθήνα.
Michalis Amarantos was born in Ermoupolis, on the island of Syros, Greece, in 1953. He studied Painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts under Professors Dimitris Mytaras and Dimosthenis Kokkinidis, as well as stage design under Vassilis Vassiliades. Works by him can be found in the collections of the National Gallery of Greece, the Frissiras Museum, the National Bank of Greece, as well as in many other important public and private collections. He lives and works in Athens.
