Dear Friend,

I waited two days for a gift — not a romantic present from some secret lover, but a gift from the Universe. I knew it was coming, I just didn't know what or when. A few days before I had received a review copy of Pam Grout's book, E-Squared: Nine do-ityourself energy experiments that prove your thoughts create your reality. PROVE. Now that had my attention. The first experiment asked me to give a request to the Universe, or as Pam calls it, the field of infinite potentiality (FP), for proof. A sign, a gift, that would show up within 48 hours. (Side note: Pam Grout is a Lawrence writer, her book is a dream. Buy a copy as a gift for yourself. I reread it frequently.) I set my intention for the gift and went on with my day. I tried to be aware of gifts coming in. All day, I noticed wonderful signs.... a new writing assignment, a large ad placed in the magazine, a movie I watched that truly spoke to me (Fearless with Jeff Bridges) and numerous other joyous gifts throughout the day. But these weren't what I was waiting for. I wanted something unexpected that held deep meaning for me personally. Two days later, eating lunch, I was reading Paranormal: My Life in Pursuit of the Afterlife by Raymond Moody. He tells a story about meeting George Ritchie and hearing his story about dying and having his life flash before his eyes. Ritchie said, "The being began to ask the question: 'What have you done with your life?' Well, I'm an Eagle Scout, I said. 'Yes, but that only glorified you.'” I set down the book and asked myself, "What have you done with your life?" And knew I had received my gift. I hope you enjoy Evolving Magazine’s first issue on Quantum Mechanics and how energy works.

News Gardner Author, Karrie Marie Baxley, Releases Dancing with a Thousand Bees Our thoughts of bees often center around what “busy bees” we have to be to stay afloat in this economy. Dancing with a Thousand Bees offers a different perspective. Gardner author Karrie Marie Baxley weaves together visual art, poetry and prose to create her surprising journey of selfdiscovery, which also awakens her to the mystical world around her, as she begins to see just how critical the tiny bee is to life on this planet — and how much we all can learn from one of nature’s greatest feminine masters. Touching on themes of environmentalism, feminism and shamanism, this book is a creative story that educates, inspires and delights. Addressing fun

facts about the honeybee as well as the plight it currently faces, Karrie Marie recognizes that the first step toward changing our environmental impact is to be awestruck—and she writes accordingly. “Karrie Marie explores the honeybee’s world with the curiosity of a shaman attuned to environmental realities (the danger of extinction) and nature’s spiritual aspects,” says author Maril Crabtree. “Her appreciation for the bee’s role in mythology and goddess lore add depth and wisdom.” Karrie Marie is an artist, gardener, Reiki master, attunement practitioner, medicine woman and writer. She has shown her art in solo exhibitions in Kansas City and group exhibitions throughout the U.S. Karrie Marie even has a piece in the Amazon region of South America. More info is available at www.KMarieArts.com and prints from artwork in the book are available at www.FineArtAmerica.com. Kansas City Healing Project Announces New Veterans Support Program The Kansas City Healing Project has begun a new support program offering energy healing sessions specifically designed for veterans and their families. We have been offering healing sessions for 100’s of cancer patients since 2005. These patients indicated that they have had very significant reductions in pain, anxiety, fatigue and other side effects of their treatment following their healing sessions. Research utilizing energy healing at Camp Pendleton with marines returning from deployment, found that they experienced a substantial reduction in posttraumatic stress, depression and increases in overall quality of life factors. Utilizing this research, we have designed a program to be able to offer similar assistance for veterans in the Kansas City Area. With a few of the veterans

and family’s we have worked with in the pilot program, one Vietnam vet who had been experiencing difficulty sleeping and disturbing dreams since his discharge has been able to let go of the dreams and is now sleeping through the night. The wife of a marine who had been deployed multiple times during their marriage found that after one session that she was more calm and peaceful with the children and life in general. Energy healing sessions are a simple natural way to assist in balancing the client’s body and energy back to its natural calm state. Sessions are done fully clothed on a massage table and take about 45 minutes. These sessions are available at no cost to the veterans and their families For more information see our web sites: www.KansasCityHealingProject.org www.CoreStarEnergyHealing.com To schedule a session at our Mission, KS office, please call John Hoefer, Director at 913-831-4422 or 816-7186358.

News Everyone’s a Winner in The Five Agreements Game The Five Agreements Game is an inspired, surprisingly fun-filled adventure game in which every participant is a winner. Brilliantly utilizing the work of shamanic teacher and healer, don Miguel Ruiz and his son, this game promises to transform your relationships with others, with yourself and radically improve your attitude to life. The five agreements, around which Ruiz’s work is based, expose our self-limiting beliefs and present a simple yet effective code of conduct for life learned from Toltec ancestors. This game makes use of the alchemical power of the agreements in a unique and revelatory way.

All players become ‘warriors’ on the Toltec path and the metaphor of ‘chivalry’ runs throughout. A sword, shield, motto and quest represent the four agreements and the inner accomplishments of the intrepid ‘knight’. The apprehension felt when first picking a card from the relationship stack is soon replaced with the joy of insight and the ‘aha’ moments that follow. Participants are known to laugh and even cry as they become increasingly self-aware and ready to face the challenge of ‘slaying the dragon’ that lies within the psyche. There is no other game like this. Everyone is a winner and ALL participants leave the table with a gift – the keys to transforming their relationships and their life. The Five Agreements Game (Findhorn Press, $29.95), is authored by Olivier Clerc, Marc Kucharz and Brandt Morgan. The game comes with an easy to read 80 page explanatory booklet, the game rules, a notepad, 25 relationship cards, 5 agreement cards, 25 prize cards and 25 bonus gift agreement cards. Wisdom Within—by Suzette Scholtes Healing Your Tired Kidneys

Unabated stress over long periods of time that is not addressed combined with a nutrient-poor diet is what usually leads to adrenal exhaustion,” writes respected doctor Christiane Northrup, M.D. When my adrenals kicked into high gear to handle an urgent situation, I was impressed by my sharp focus, clear thinking and astute choices made in seconds to solve the problem. I helped a family member. All is well. YOUR BODY’S STRESS RESPONSE FACTS The adrenal glands are your body’s primary "shock absorbers." These two little glands sitting on top of your kidneys produce hormones that include adrenalin, cortisol and DHEA, which allows you to respond to the conditions of your daily life in healthy and flexible ways. Adrenaline is thought of as the fight -or-flight hormone. Yet, it kicks in when something is threatening. It makes your heart pound, your blood rush to your heart and large muscle groups, your pupils widen, your brain sharpens, and your tolerance for pain increases— basically, it prepares you for battle. Modern-day stress may be pushing through your fatigue, dealing with a stressful job and reacting with quick reflexes to avoid a traffic accident. Think of these adrenaline surges, Northrup suggests, as withdrawals from a bank, to help you get through life’s rough spots. If you have gotten into the habit of withdrawing adrenaline from your account daily, you’ll eventually be overdrawn and adrenals will be overwhelmed. Cortisol is good, as it increases your appetite and energy level while toning down your immune system’s inflammatory responses. This hormone stimulates the storage and release of energy in the body, helps the body resist the stressful effects of infections, trauma and temperature extremes, and helps you maintain stable emotions. Ideally, cortisol is released into the system only on an occasional basis, rather than in response to chronic stress. If cortisol levels become too high for too long, they may have undesirable side effects including loss of EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING

bone density, muscle wasting, thinning of the skin, ability to build protein, kidney damage, fluid retention, spiking blood sugar levels, weight gain, and weak defense to bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeasts, allergies and more. Both the adrenal glands and the ovaries produce DHEA. DHEA helps to neutralize cortisol’s immunesuppressant effect, thereby improving resistance to disease. It protects and increases bone density, guards cardiovascular health, provides energy, sharpens the mind and helps maintain normal sleep patterns. Like adrenalin and cortisol, DHEA also improves your ability to recover from episodes of stress. SUGGESTIONS WHEN UNDER STRESS A few days after my stress period, I wanted to sleep more, so I found ways to build extra rest into my day: I meditated more. I let go of work that could wait, and made it a priority to eat fresh, organic food—especially dark greens. I drank large amounts of water and herbal teas. I avoided sugar and caffeine. I played silly movies to laugh out loud. The following are suggestions one can follow when under stress: 1. Focus on upbeat, positive and loving thoughts. 2. Increase your meditation practice. 3. Be in nature. 4. Turn off the inner critic. 5. Spend time with people who make you feel good. 6. Use affirmations to remember the unconditional love of your birthright. 7. Be nurtured. Spend money on a massage with a good therapist. 8. Exercise — especially yoga. 9. Put tasks into priority. Do what is necessary and let go of everything else. Yoga that purifies kidneys, especially back-bending actions and restorative poses to create anti-flight/fight or parasympathetic state are especially effective Yoga makes your kidneys happy. This “power” organ thrives on good nutrition, rest, yoga and hydration. In yoga we lift the kidneys to the heart. Love conquers fear. We tap into the courage within. Journey to Wholeness—by Jude LaClaire, Ph.D. Live Deliberately

T

he one predictable thing about life is that it will change. As the Greek philosopher, Heraclitus, reminds us, “You cannot step into the same river twice.” As the brain thrives on stimulation, novelty and surprise, it also seeks stability, safety and consistency. Thus we find ourselves on the horns of a dilemma as we face the daily changes of our inner and outer lives. Chris Farrell, economics editor, talks about two trends in his latest books; The New Frugality: How to Consume Less, Save More, and Live Better and Unretirement: How Baby Boomers are Changing the Way We Think About Work, Community and the Good Life. The first trend is an economic one that affects us all. He says, “The embrace of what I’m calling the New Frugality signals that half a century of people spending with abandon and borrowing as much as possible is done.” This means the children of the Baby Boomers and their children are in a world that challenges them to think about resources differently. The second trend is that the Baby Boomers are now into what was once considered the retirement age. He is among the writers and thinkers who are talking about a different type of Act III in which older persons will be working, volunteering and contributing to the economic welfare of this country rather than draining its resources. Both of these trends are calls to action for people of different ages. Our environment is offering us opportunities for thinking more deeply about our lives and where they are going, both individually and collectively. Henry David Thoreau tells us, “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” We have this chance to live more deliberately, and, hopefully, more simply. Our Walden Pond is right here in our culture, our commu-

nities, our work and home environments. As I listen to people of all ages, I am struck by the similarity of the issues. Each person is struggling with change in his or her stage of development and set of circumstances. Each of us is being asked to do more from within, depending less on affluence and immediate gratification. It is certainly a task that requires us to think about the basics. Chris Farrell says it well, “Yet personal finance is really about deciding how to live your life, figuring out what you really cherish and value, then putting your money behind those goals and beliefs.” It seems to me that his thoughts apply to other parts of our lives as well. Take climate change as an example of a very big trend that is shaping our lives in so many ways. I see people of all ages, especially young people, studying and exploring ways for individuals and communities to be environmentally sustainable. The Earthship Biotecture is an example of one individual, Michael Reynolds, starting a trend locally, which is now impacting others globally. For every problem there is a solution that can be more positive. I am certainly living my life quite differently than my parents did at my age. My child will be facing her challenges in her particular environment. Whether we are facing life as a young person, a young family or in unretirement, we are being asked to be more present in the moment, think more deliberately about our lives and live more simply, valuing and cherishing the earth, each other and ourselves. Book Review—by Mark Scheel Connecting the Dots: A Revised Reality A Review of Quantum God: How Life Really Works by Michelle Langenberg (Balboa Press 2013)

A

s the 20th century began to draw to its conclusion, mankind was left with a fundamental dilemma: How could one embrace scientific advancements and yet preserve some remnant of religion? One answer seemed to emerge from the revelations of quantum mechanics that yielded a fertile field for thinkers, physicists and authors who began to explore a new perspective on the relationship between matter and consciousness. And the implications thereof for an overarching Creative Intelligence infused throughout the universe. It is within this stream of thought and vision that Michelle Langenberg and her book Quantum God: How Life Really Works belong, comprising a significant contribution to furthering an understanding of the particulars of this concept. A prize-winning poet, editor, artist, teacher, Alzheimer-care provider and Master Reiki healer, Langenberg has drawn on life experience and done her homework regarding the subject, the bibliography and citation notes alone comprise nearly a booklet. And her sources, ranging over a host of references, include The New Testament, the Tao Te Ching, the Qur’an, Yogananda, Einstein, Jane Roberts, Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer, C.S. Lewis, Cole’s The Hole in the Universe, Goswami’s The Self-Aware Universe, Toben’s Space-Time and Beyond, Wilber’s Quantum Questions, Herbert’s Quantum Reality, Wheeler and Zurek’s Quantum Theory and Measurement, Talbot’s The Holographic Universe, as well as many anecdotes from her personal experience illustrating the points under discussion. If one were to infer from the aforementioned names and titles that one focus of Langenberg’s goal here is to seek common ground between science and spirituality, that inference would indeed be warranted. But Quantum God extends beyond that, offering a great deal more. Langenberg begins by demonstrating why a literal interpretation of Biblical scripture has become passé in the 21st century, and then commences to lay the groundwork for an alternative view that surprisingly retains much value from such sacred texts. Quoting from A Course in Miracles, she proposes that we come from a Source that only creates like itself, and therefore we become “co-

creators” of all that is. We are, then, aspects of the Divine. And certain corollaries follow from this, such as, for example, we are all connected. Or, anything physical begins as a mental concept. Or, time does not move absolutely in only one direction. And, most importantly, we literally create our own reality. She bolsters these assertions with sidebar illustrations like the “Necker Cube,” which demonstrates the phenomenon of a “quantum jump.” She goes on in successive chapters to convey how everything “physical” is actually vibrating energy, composed of units termed “quanta.” And quanta can behave like waves or like particles, which leads in actuality to unlimited possibilities such as an electron being in two places at once. Furthermore, quoting Fred Alan Wolf from Parallel Universes, “What’s true for the tiny electron is true for all of the objects within the material universe, since all things are made up of electronlike things.” That, then, introduces the idea that all things, if believed by the observer, are really and truly possible and “miracles” become natural phenomena within human experience. So that’s how Jesus did it! Mind-boggling stuff! However, in the end we still might ask, who or what exactly is this “Quantum God”? Perhaps, Langenberg suggests, Rabbi David Cooper’s definition of God as a Verb is insightful? God-ing. Quantum God as energy-in-action? Or perhaps, she declares, “God is a concept, a Force, the process of Manifestation, communication, and life.” But ultimately, she concludes, “The fact is that God is to each of us whatever we think God is…and more.” Emphasis placed on the word think. Langenberg’s writing is conversational, yet articulate and precise. What Langenberg has given us is a superb overview and analysis of this new combination of scientific and theological thought by connecting the dots to a revised reality: a most worthy addition to the field’s body of literature.

Food First!—by Bethany Klug, D.O. Clearing the Roadblocks to Healthier Living

I

t takes some diligence to live a health-supportive lifestyle. The great spiritual teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh, defines diligence as organizing your life around something you want to bring into your life. The twenty-first century is so demanding and fast paced that without this diligence healthy habits easily go by the wayside. Here’s an example. I met a woman the other day, who with her commute, puts in a 70-hour work week. There is never a work day without a crisis. Although she was trying to empower her staff to handle the crises without her, they always seem to need her. She loves to cook, but eats fast or packaged food for her meals. She has no time for exercise or meditation which used to make her feel so good. She will go without sleep to get ready to entertain on weekends. When I suggested that working a nine-hour day would give her 15 hours a week to take care of herself, she was dumbfounded. But it isn’t as easy as walking in one day and working fewer hours. There are patterns that keep us stuck in behaviors that work against us. This gal is at her best in a crisis and gets a lot of satisfaction from handling them. But the cost of the “atta-girls” for saving the day is her health. I referred her to someone who can help her recognize and shift this and other patterns that are no longer serving her and open a space for more healthful ones. Many years ago I started saying no in order to make time to tend to my health. It was scary at first, but no one got mad. I still got raises and promotions. My friends were happy to see that I was feeling better and were glad to support me. My family put up with me and now years later are adopting some of the same healthy habits I did back then. I organize my life around my health because when I don’t, it shows. I don’t think as clearly. I tire easily. I lose my sense of humor and get crabby. I don’t sleep well. I get apathetic. So I know better than to leave the house in the morning without meditating, exercising, packing a healthy lunch, downing some

green juice — thanks to hubby, our household juice man — and sipping a green smoothie on my way out the door. My routine may not be yours, but I do challenge you to consider what you need to do every day to live a more full, healthy and engaged life. I also challenge you to examine the underlying reasons for behaviors that work against this, and find a way to change them. Revelations—by Olufemi Sharp Loneliness Vs. Active Aloneness

T

he National Science Foundation reported in a general social survey that unprecedented numbers of Americans experience loneliness. We live in an age of blind-fold communication technologies. Sharing life with others behind a computer screen, cell phones and watching television is a distraction from and a poor remedy for loneliness. People are more inclined to be lonely today than at any other time in U.S. history. While loneliness can be spurred by specific events or transitions, for some it is a daily fact of life. Loneliness affects countless people across socio-economic boundaries. Whether rich, middle class, poor, working poor, gay, straight, in a monogamous relationship, a polyamorous relationship or living alone, loneliness requires deeper acknowledgement and healing beyond just seeking out a comfortable social network. As a licensed counselor, I take a caring, curious and respectful posture about a person’s experiences with these sensitive feel-

ings of loneliness that can lead to mood challenges ranging from depression to anxiety to shame. Let me hasten to emphasize that nothing is more central to your happiness than the quality of life that is developed within “active aloneness.” The distinction between “active aloneness” and loneliness is that loneliness is a public health concern and “active aloneness” is a self-wellness protocol, a spacious stillness of unconditional friendliness to oneself. With loneliness people suffer mentally, physically and spiritually, and risk developing and dying from heart disease because they lack a sense of belonging within a social network of family, co-workers and friends. With “active aloneness” people learn to speak their own truth and move to their own rhythm. It is a space of knowing that wholeness starts within the individual and expands outward. Erik Erickson, a prominent American life -stage theorist, termed his sixth stage “intimacy versus isolation,“ suggesting that people will be loved or unloved, complete or incomplete by early adulthood. The American cultural narrative has

generationally placed a burden of shame and stress on people who experience loneliness, especially individuals who are single past a certain chronological age, usually women. These narratives point to cultural and social discourse supported by confused media messages and storybook fairytales of love and happiness rather than to any human psycho-pathological metaphors. People are influenced to feel inadequate if they aren’t involved in a fairytale romance! Despite these messages, it is important to take ownership of your own happiness. Seeking out romantic relationships and developing friendships that are healthy and soulful with all types of people is truly a fascinating expression of vibrant and mature womanhood and manhood. I suggest three skill building exercises to harness self-love, happiness and a solid appreciative sense of “active aloneness.” • The first skill-building exercise falls within the realm of quantum mechanics called positive affirmations. Thoughts and beliefs are energy and wave particles joined together to shape human experiences. Neurons that fire together stay together. Never underestimate the power of thought to create the life you want! Esther Hicks calls it “a more amplified imagination about actualizing the things you desire in your life.” • The second skill-building exercise is Mindfulness-wellness practices, which

is a practice of choosing to live in the moment without clinging to negative feelings, without clinging to negative thoughts. Jon Kabat-Zinn, professor emeritus of medicine, says that mindfulness practices can have a dramatic influence on your relationship with your thoughts, emotions and actions that produces great benefits. The third skill-building exercise is the practice of Narrative Therapy. This practice empowers you to rewrite your personal narrative and linking themes to positive affirmations and mindfulness wellness. This process helps create linguistic space to construct a new vision, a new quest, a new happiness and a new set of goals to banish loneliness and invite joy and fulfillment.

The benefits of “active aloneness” are extraordinary! In real life, as in fairytales, true treasures lay beyond our comfort zones and the courageous travel the journey.

eing prepared and proactive can make a difference in health and well-being. To prepare, plan, stay informed and be READY for disasters and emergencies, use www.ready.gov. to set up and implement an emergency supply list. This website explains how much water and non-perishable food you need and lists other necessities like flashlights, whistles, dust mask, local maps, cash and emergency reference material. To proactively prepare for illnesses and minor injuries, keep natural remedies in your medicine cabinet. There are many items from which to choose, so here is a short list to consider. For injuries, especially bruising injuries, apply ice and elevate the area. In addition, topical homeopathic cream and tablets of Traumeel will lessen the inflammation, help the bruising go away faster and decrease pain. For burns, if they are closed and with minor blisters, I recommend running under cold water and then applying either calendula cream or lavender essential oil. For minor bug bites or poison ivy, tea tree essential oil or lavender essential oil can be beneficial. To prepare for winter, Vitamin C in the form of Ester C or Buffered C can be used regularly at 500 to 1000mg per day and doubled if you get sick. Check your vitamin D level prior to winter and cloudy skies. A mid-range level of about 50 to 70 mg/ml can decrease your risk of colds and flus. You can safely take 2000 IU’s of vitamin D as an adult without kidney problems and some people require 5000 IU’s or more. However, Vitamin D can be toxic to the kidneys and, since it is a fat soluble vitamin, blood levels should be checked at least once a year. If you do become ill, there are action strategies. For colds or sinus infections, drink plenty of water, minimize sugar and dairy products, and use a sinus rinse with a Neti pot or Nasopure system to flush out mucous and allergens. The homeopathic nasal spray, Sinusin can loosen mucous and homeopathic lozenges such as Relievol or Zinc lozenges can improve symptoms and offer relief. Herbal remedies such as Echinacea, Goldenseal, Oil of oregano, or Olive Leaf extract can help with infection. Get plenty of rest and down time to get well faster. You should check with your medical provider before taking herbal remedies if you are on prescription medications or have chronic health problems. As a goal for optimal health, balance in your

As a holistic physician, I like to discuss the four essential elements for well-being: body, mind, emotions and spirit. You can start by assessing these four and determining where improvements can be made in your life. Body health relies on the fuel you intake and the activity level you maintain on a regular basis. Mental health depends on life-long learning, mental exercises and setting and meeting career goals. Emotional health relates to home environment, friend and family relationships, and whether you have happiness, joy and hope in your life. Spiritual health comes from your attitude to-

Revelations—by Pamela Bramlett A Tale of Stardust: Riding the Inner Dragon to Rescue the Luminous Child

I

n my 20s I discovered Fritjof Capra’s book The Tao of Physics. In it, Capra ingeniously compares quantum physics to ancient eastern thought. The most profound revelation for me was that an atom cannot be observed without being changed. The power of our attention and awareness is actually infinitely more powerful than our actions. What haunted me was the realization that this happens every moment, regardless of our state of consciousness. We are always creating, mindful or not. One recent morning I woke to an image of a star and the echoing words “You are Starshine, be Starshine.” I drew a picture of the image and wrote down the words, putting the paper in my nightstand. Days later, my daughter mentioned, unprompted by me, that we actually come from stars. Still a bit oblivious to the message, days later my boyfriend was explaining the dynamic between us by illustrating on paper. As I watched him draw the image representing me, I knew it was time to pay attention. It was the same image I had seen –a replica of the original star I had drawn, languishing in a closed drawer. Mobilized to search for meaning, I discovered a quote from American theoretical physicist and cosmologist Lawrence M. Krauss: “The amazing thing is that every atom in your body came from a star that exploded...It really is the most poetic thing I know about physics: You are all stardust.” I was thrilled to discover it is actually true. Carl Sagan says, “The cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself.” This takes quantum mechanics to a whole new level. Stars, dragons, luminosity — sounds like medieval fantasy from another world in time. Truth being, these heroic tales are no less spectacular than the reality of our present-day quantum adventure. However, as drunk as we become pioneering inherent power through our newly-discovered quantum abilities, we must sober ourselves with realization of responsibility for wielding them. Being the Pollyanna I am, when I decided to become an organic farmer, my intention was to create a happy farm with happy plants and happy people. As a farmers’ market manager, I had witnessed first-hand the struggle that seemed innate to local farming. Unfortunately, I too soon found myself struggling, overworked with a case of shingles and seriously out of balance. I realized that despite my intention there often exists a breach, or even a chasm between intention and our emotional capacity to consciously create it. It wasn’t a question of believing. I envisioned a happy farm and knew it was possible deep within my soul, but was illequipped to create it. Fortunately, where there is a question the answer exists. Pam Grout states in her

book E2, “Your connection to the field provides accurate and unlimited guidance.” A friend shared that she was reading The Presence Process, by Michael Brown, and that it had sent her on an emotionally integrative journey. I made a mental note to write that down, but immediately forgot. A week later, while listening to one of my son’s albums, I was mesmerized by the words of a gentleman with a strong South African accent and discovered it was Michael Brown. My son had sampled one of Brown’s talks on a track. That Saturday, arriving at the farmers market, I looked down at my table and there was Brown’s book, courtesy of a concerned vendor. The Presence Process kept reappearing to take me deeper into the true meaning of our quantum exist-

ence—the most transformational path on my journey to date. It teaches that “happiness” is not to be confused with the authentic joy resulting from mindfulness and true presence. This type of joy is found only in physical balance and emotional presence, as we integrate aspects of our wounded selves, the luminous child in need of rescue. As I continue to take cues on this journey, and tend to the reality of my condition, the conditions around me change. My intention for a happy farm inadvertently brought me the tools for my own transformation. Making the courageous choice to ride the inner dragon and rescue the luminous child often feels less than heroic. There are no witnesses, no accolades and no hero’s welcome as we return home. The reward is that we return home. The child is rescued and our innocence along with it, enabling us to create from purity. As Brown states “…our devotion to this quest radiates this awareness into each cell of each life form blessed by our presence.” As we embrace our inherent divinity on this quantum sojourn, may we be mindful of the mantle of responsibility and the scepter of wisdom, to evolve emotionally, concurrent to wielding our inherent power. Let’s look to the myths of the gods’ and the goddesses’ forewarnings. Even war is a manifestation of our collective, unintegrated pain, starvation and poverty the same. These possibilities are also inherent in the field of infinite possibility, when we fail to integrate our feelings of lack and all-consuming hunger. The angst is the luminous child calling to us to be present with her, to hold her and be with her unconditionally, so that she or he can be at peace. Fortunately, once our child self comes to peace, so do we. When we create peace within, we create peace in the world – that is quantum mechanics. Some days on the farm are happy, some not so much. Recently, I was injured from pushing too hard. Alternatively, quite often I am filled with an abiding sense of meaning, joy and inner vastness I cannot describe. So, I welcome the pain, sit with it and my luminous child, loving her unconditionally, knowing as I rediscover my true nature and innocence, the universe is allowed to discover itself, and I am empowered to create from love, “…like when the mother met the father, kissed the horizon, gave birth to stars.” Nahko and Medicine for the People.

Op mize your Energy Levels for Longevity

E

nergy is thought to be the main mechanism that drives everything to life and vitality; without it, our world would collapse. Our body requires cellular energy to function properly, which, with diet, exercise, and rest, provides us with physical energy that allows us to perform our daily tasks. In addition, our emotional energy keeps us motivated, inspired, hopeful and loving. Unfortunately, as we age, our energy levels start declining, promoting the pathway to diseases. Obviously, we would like to optimize our health, and that is through optimizing our energy levels. A common habit that we see, especially in the morning, is drinking a cup of coffee to provide a boost of energy throughout the day. According to the National Coffee Drinking Trends, 83 percent of Americans drink coffee, with more than $18 billion spent yearly on coffee1. By relying on stimulants such as coffee to boost energy levels, people get only a temporary energy boost, only to feel fatigued and exhausted afterwards. This is primarily because of the excess secretion of adrenalin from the adrenal glands, which cause them to wear off rapidly leading to a significant depletion of energy. Obviously, we do not want to be in a roller coaster of mood swings. We would like to feel energetic all day long, and that can be accomplished through boosting our body’s own internal energy source, which exists in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The body uses the nutrients from the breakdown of foods to supply energy in form of ATP to the cells. With limited cellular energy organs cannot function properly and diseases eventually form. The power plant for cellular energy production is called the Mitochondria. Research has shown that mitochondrial dysfunction can lead to a myriad of age-related health problems3. This suggests that maintaining cellular and physical energy is crucial to optimum health. Adaptogenic herbs are herbs that increase one’s ability to adapt to biological, physical and emotional stresses of daily life by strengthening the body’s resistance and endurance to illnesses. The red Ginseng root (Panax Ginseng) is an adaptogenic herb par excellence—one of the most beneficial Ginsengs available. It has been used in China for centuries to help the body manage physical and mental stresses. Scientific evidence shows it can help support ATP production, thereby protecting the mitochondria and promoting longevity4. As an herbalist, I would recommend preparing the Ginseng tea using the decoction method: Add a teaspoon of Red Ginseng root to one cup of water, and then bring the mixture to boil. Reduce the heat afterwards, and simmer for 10 min, strain and

Taking a walk in nature can help increase oxygenation at the cellular level, increasing energy levels and protecting the mitochondria. drink. It is recommended to use the herb for a few weeks, then taking a week off to rest, before starting again. Another adaptogenic herb is an herb from India called Ashwagandha. It has been shown to have remarkable stress and fatigue reduction properties, increase energy levels, and promote feelings of well being. Due to its antioxidant properties, it helps scavenge free radical damage to the cell membranes, thereby protecting against several diseases, including but not limited to neurodegenerative diseases5. Similarl to Red Ginseng root, you can prepare it as a decoction. In order for the mitochondria to produce energy, oxygen intake is needed. One can live without food and water for few days, but cannot live without oxygen. Unfortunately, our air has been dramatically

polluted with toxic fumes from vehicles, factories, chimneys, etc. Those, in addition to the excessive use of tobacco, sugar, alcohol and low-quality food, which mostly contain synthetic toxic ingredients like pesticides and additives. All this generates increased freeradical damage in the body, increasing inflammation levels and oxidative stress, and accelerating aging and disease formation. All this stresses the importance of integrating regular exercise with a clean diet that includes whole foods, such as vegetables, fruits, wildcaught fish, lean protein, olive oil and whole grains. These foods are part of the Mediterranean diet, which according to Michael Ozner, Medical Director of the Cardiovascular Prevention Institute of South Florida, is associated with longevity, heart protection, reduced blood pressure, sugar level regulation, lower levels of inflammation and cancer protection6. Furthermore, the way food is prepared has a strong correlation to health, as scientific evidence suggests. Foods cooked at a high temperature can produce chronic inflammation and accelerated glycation, which causes damage to our cell membranes, increasing our risk of diabetes and heart attack. Taking a walk in nature can help increase oxygenation at the cellular level, increasing energy levels and protecting the mitochondria. Unfortunately, most of us live in polluted, crowded cities, and rarely have access to nature. “Bol d’air Jacquier” is a device invented by the French chemical engineer René Jacquier, which generates pure oxygen molecules from the terpene components of Pinus pinaster essential oil. Research performed on this device showed an increase in antioxidant effect, along with other health benefits7, 8. In conclusion, optimizing our energy levels is associated with a longer healthier life. As people age, the energy expenditure at rest, known as Basal Metabolic Rate (MBR), decreases; this accelerates the accumulation of fats, leading to weight gain and increasing the risk to age-related diseases, even in the case of caloric restriction.

Religion Vs. Spirituality

M

any people ask me about the difference between being religious and being spiritual. I think that difference is significant. Religion is a man-made, organized belief system consisting of various creeds, teachings, rituals, and documents and usually (but not always) revolves around a deity of some kind. If people follow a specific belief system, it is their conviction that this is how they will receive a greater position on the other side. In contrast, spirituality is the very personal search to find the greater meaning in life and one’s existence in this world. It doesn’t have to involve rituals or written words and may encompass having a love for a Divine source, or God, and learning to use this allencompassing energy in every situation. In being spiritual, you have a respect and love for self and an understanding of your connection to others. There are many paths to reach the place where you treat yourself and others with kindness and feel at peace. I know many self-identified atheists who are kinder people than some “spiritual” or religious people, and vice versa. It’s all about constructing a belief system that works for you, makes you the best person you can possibly be, and encourages you to treat others with honor. There is not one correct way. I often say that all religions have bits of the truth, but no one religion has all of the truth. If the holy texts of the world’s religions are not viewed through the lens of love and acceptance, I think it does the authors a great disservice. The one element of religion I don’t like (and this is a general statement) is that some people believe that their way is the only way. Unfortunately, many of the world’s wars are based upon a sense that a certain belief system is the only true word of God. It sets up a sense of “us against them.” Where religion talks a lot about God, the idea of spirituality is to practice the higher ideals that we associate with God in our daily life. Spirituality is a very personal journey, but the destination is always the same: love. The mass exodus from organized religion in the past few decades points to the desire people have to ask questions instead of being told answers, to doubt dogma without risk of condemnation, and to feel free to be themselves without judgment. Our planet furnishes Spirit with such a diverse mix of human stories that it’s a shame some people want everyone to be just like them. The human desire to judge is strong, but if we all understood that each of us has our own unique path, wouldn’t Earth be a much better place?

Get Conscious of your Consciousness: A debate rages to this day over whether consciousness is a product of the brain or if the brain is merely a receiver for consciousness that already exists. When a brain dies, does that consciousness cease to exist? Or does its energy continue on even after the brain is no longer functioning? One side of the debate wants proof and tests, while the other side just accepts that energy doesn’t die.

Adventures of the Soul Journeys Through the Physical and Spiritual Dimensions

Your Guide to Spirit Guides: Everyone has spirit guides, and they can change with our earthly circumstances. We have: Personal guides, who are people we’ve known on the physical dimension Mastery guides, who are drawn to us based on certain activities we’re currently engaged in Master teachers, who are much evolved and may never have incarnated on this physical plane Manifesting the Energy of Love: This is your most important assignment on Earth. So if you back your thought with love, there’s no stopping it! A good habit to get into when you wake up in the morning is to create an intention and send that thought out with love. If you get into this routine, I guarantee that your life will change. Just Stay Positive: Keep your thoughts focused on what you have instead of what you don’t have. If you send the message out to the Universe that there is lack, the Universe will make sure that lack is amplified. Whatever your focus is, the Universe will provide. Think positively, because positive thinking is more in alignment with your soul. Negative thinking will bring confusion and bitterness. Remind yourself several times a day to bring your mind to a positive place and send that positivity out. The Process of Transition: Everything is a process, and seeing death as “change” instead of the “end” isone of the most difficult processes that we, as humans, have to embrace. And it’s a change for the better—because if people truly understood death, it would be an event they’d look forward to and celebrate.

Ge ng to the Heart of True Freedom

W

hat does true freedom look and feel like? Would you be free if you had every worldly thing you desire? The relationship you long for, the free rein to go where you want when you want, fame, money, power, that big-shot job…..would having any or all of these make you free? True freedom isn’t something that can be bought, borrowed, or stolen. True freedom lies in understanding that the material world we have become addicted to is nothing but a construct of the illusion of separation we have bought into and manifested here on Earth — a false truth. So there is no fear in losing our attachment to anything in the material world that does not serve our true Self. Your true Self agreed that if and when the material human aspect imbalanced your real purpose and hindered the breaking of the shell of false truths that you on a soul level would transform your human life in order to bring balance between your body, mind and soul. In doing so, the illusions you created between those aspects would gradually fade into the nothingness from which they came. Signs that that imbalance and transformation is at hand- both globally and personally- are evident everywhere. The strain of living in the world, especially at this pivotal time in history when everything is going through a metamorphosis of sorts, is peaking. Many people are feeling the heaviness of that in their lives. Some people feel trapped by their society, government, or culture. Others are facing more personal challenges and constraints. This is all a part of the process that is bringing a deeper spiritual need to the human consciousness. Weak economies and war are symptoms of untruths mankind has bought into. Those symptoms are bringing challenges that are forcing people out of their comfort zones. With each challenge come previously unknown fears and obstacles to be faced rather than denied. No matter our circumstances- what culture we live in, what family we were born into- we have to choose from the opportunities that human existence brings our way. It is our birthright to experience and use the opportunities we choose in order to find our heart’s inner most freedom. Not all opportunities, however, come packaged with a bow. In fact, the challenges we face in life are actually our greatest opportunities and our greatest gifts because they force us to face our fears. Can fear stop you from finding personal freedom? If you choose to deny it, it can. But it’s only a matter of further life experience before you will eventually come to the place in consciousness where most fears, which are false truths, can be overcome. The less you know yourself inwardly, the

True freedom lies in understanding that the material world we have become addicted to is nothing but a construct of the illusion of separation we have bought into and manifested here on Earth — a false truth.

gy of acceptance, surrender and inner guidance to push you through the fear and the unknown to a more aware you that awaits you as you move through your learning experience. When the need to overcome your fear overpowers the fear itself, real inward and outward changes take place. This is true freedom. Many of you have had to give up homes, jobs, and/or relationships and live more modestly than before. There is no shame in that. In fact, these seeming sacrifices are a gift. These are the kind of challenges that are helping humanity to break through the shell of fear, separateness and selfdenial to new experiences, jobs and relationships that will continue to enhance who you have become and will continue to become as you move into an ever expanding awareness of self and the purpose of life. It is difficult for humans to lose or seemingly give up what they have worked so hard to acquire, to be, to do and accomplish in a world of duality. But those human aspects of life that have been inwardly outgrown have now become stumbling blocks to true inner freedom. Isn’t it time to let them go? You who are reading this have asked, consciously or unconsciously, to understand the purpose of your life and, possibly, human existence. The material world is addicting, but there comes a point where it can prevent the true freedom of self-knowing and soul growth. Balancing body, mind and soul means living in the light of your inner being through the purification of the heart. True freedom doesn’t come with closed minds and hearts or over used misunderstood beliefs and teachings. True freedom doesn’t know greed, selfishness, fear, hate or separation from each other. It takes deep searching and challenging inner work to see through and beyond the false beliefs this duality has given power, but with that comes true freedom.

stronger your denial is, until the need to push through what is ignored becomes so strong it can no longer be denied, contained, or put off. Let’s say the fear of surviving becomes so emotionally painful that the mind feels it will go insane if it doesn’t let go of the fear completely. You come to a place where you are willing to accept whatever you must to survive. In that moment of surrender, a sense of peacefulness and inner strength frees you from the ego, shame, and guilt that have hampered your inner guidance. What you now feel is a sense of empowerment. You accept that whatever the outcome of this experience, you now have the powerful ener-

Spiritual Horoscope—by Aluna Michaels October 2014 Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) Happy birthday Libra! This month’s eclipse spiritually guides you with relationships and self-image. Meditate and see yourself through 4th dimensional eyes. View yourself from your soul’s perceptive. See beautiful divine light shining in every cell of your body. This improves body image and how valuable you feel to others. Reject 3rd dimensional values! Also watch for impulse spending, since Mercury’s retrograde and you’ll likely regret it later! Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) This month’s eclipse stimulates intuition. Meditate as usual, and also be open to guidance at all times of day. Record dreams, too! Ask for insights about health habits affecting moods. You likely have a food or environmental allergy. Release the food/substance and see how your emotional energy lifts, as well as your physical energy! You can also start a new relationship if single. Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) The eclipse wants to create an ideal relationship for you! Meditate on what would make you the ideal partner. Next work on adopting those habits and mindsets. Make a list of your “perfect partner”, then ponder each point to see how truly valuable it is, and release less significant qualities. Then meditate on forgiving yourself and all romantic partners (past and present) for flaws. You can manifest wonderful harmony! Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) October’s eclipse give insights into how you bring childhood issues into career. Meditate on how you’ve blocked success by unconsciously projecting limiting thoughts on supervisors, colleagues and yourself. Most people do this, but right now you can be free of that pattern! Observe your thoughts and behaviors, and change them to become tremen-

dously empowered! Also make efforts to connect with dear friends you haven’t see in awhile. Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) The eclipse is making you put your money where your mouth is spiritually. You believe in the power of meditation, but how often are you actually meditating? You love humanity, but how is your patience and compassion level with people you encounter? That’s the kind of stuff you’ll feel tested about. Walking your talk in this way opens your heart chakra and helps you feel bonded to others (you often feel isolated). Also, don’t make major job decisions in October, since Mercury is retrograde. Wait until next month. Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Please meditate on forgiving past betrayals, heartbreaks and other trust issues. This month’s eclipse makes you put “funny glasses” so you see the present as the past. Cleanse your heart of these ghosts so you have less to react to. You’re entering a new era of healthy bonding and trust! Also meditate on releasing old ideas of God judging you about sexuality. The Universe supports all aspects of pleasure! Aries (March 21 – April 19) This eclipse is healing relationships for you. Meditate about being patient with others. When vulnerable,

you can get irritated and sharp. Believe the Universe is opening your heart and that it’s safe to bond and trust! Talk with your partner about his/her fears of getting closer as well as your own. If single, you can meet someone who’ll challenge you to open up in a deeper way than ever before! Taurus (April 20 – May 20) If you have communication problems, especially with your spouse or partner, please look at your health habits. October’s eclipse gives insights about addictive food behaviors. You can also realize foods that trigger allergies. When your body is stressed, your mind and emotions will be too. Also, more meditation time comforts you so you don’t go to “bad” foods for support! Gemini (May 21 – June 20) The eclipse helps develop relationships. To heal your soul more deeply, meditate on childhood memories about first loves. Ponder how you felt as you moved into puberty when your body developed. What messages did you get about dating and sexuality? Write these things down, and then rip the list up. Whether memories are good or bad, release them as a limitation, since they are an old part of you. You’ll move into a new maturity in romance and sexuality. Cancer (June 21 – July 22) This month’s eclipse wants to free you from dysfunctional family patterns of emotion. They can be from your birth family, or your current family as an adult. It’s easy for you to get into a rut, and stay in them because you’re comfortable. Meditate to dare to change the status quo when it comes to how you respond to others, and how they respond to you. Even if loved ones resist, stay strong with your healthy ways of relating! By mid-November, new positive “ruts” are formed and life is much smoother!

Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) Meditation will be amazing this month! The eclipse creates new neuropathways in your brain. These are avenues paved for subtle levels of thinking. Meditation activates brain waves and strengthens new paths of thought! Show the Universe you’re serious about spiritual growth by activating the gifts you’ve been given! Your intuition strengthens, helping you make choices that make life easier. You’ll also have insights into others that give you compassion. Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) October’s eclipse helps with money management. Meditation and quiet reflection reveal unhealthy patterns of spending – and also reveal negative beliefs about money. Read books about spirituality and prosperity. Your mind will open to receive the abundance around you! Also, forgive other people for their money fears. They often mask greater fears of intimacy and rejection.
