Shooting Training Is Often A Pre-Requisite For Success Hunters and shooters all understand that not all shooting disciplines are the same. They know that shooting at clay targets, or shooting at stationary targets, will differ from what the hunter aiming at deer or other big game is up against. Even hunters and shooters that track buck, but over different distances, will have to consider different issues. They may not use the same rifle, or the same ammunition, or optics or other aids to ensure they have success. All of these issues are often best addressed by gathering proper information to ensure one has all the details about the best rifle and ammunition choices, or the best optics, or the basis for those skills that will impact one’s success. To this end most serious hunters and shooters attend some form of shooting instruction. In a country such as the US, for example, with its great support for hunting, shooting and similar activities, every shooter can be assured of being able to find a good shooting school or facility that offers instruction. A good center or shooting school will ensure that they have the best instructors to offer the visitor/student that wants to be taught those skills they will need to be accurate at over whatever distances they prefer shooting, good instruction. A special category refers to long-distance shooting. This discipline differs from those that the shorter distance hunters and shooters prefer and requires different skills levels, different and often better rifles to be successful. At shooting class these issues are addressed to help the student form a better understanding of what they are up against, what adjustments in their thinking they need to consider, what the issues are that may impact their success. But, the good news is that whether you find yourself in Boulder, CO or in Hondo, TX, there will always be a good training or shooting center to assist. The best among these shooting training facilities normally devise a program that offers both classroom and shooting range – even field – time to make sure they address all important issues for the attendee. They will offer instruction on, say, the best rifles and ammunition for starters but then they will proceed to more technical aspects such as explaining MOA and how that affects long-range shooting and precision, they will teach students how to read wind direction and speed, the effects of mirage, all important aspects related to ballistics and a host of other important issues that impact longrange shooting. Being taught about bullet drop and how to compensate for it, is looked at during class. Weather conditions are indeed important for the long-range shooter, more so than for the hunter and shooter that tries their hand at short distances, those at less than, for example, 700 yards – or 800 and even 1, 000yards. The further from target, the greater the likelihood of missing unless you are taught what the variables are. Some issues that many may never pay attention to because they believe they possess the knowledge and skills to overcome obstacles include, for example, body position when you’re prone, or when you crouch, or when you stand in an upright position. There are indeed good

instructors that teach the shooter the best body position to aid accuracy. The same applies to how you place your finger on the trigger. Correct finger placement on the trigger, and not applying the wrong pressure, is a skill that needs to be taught. So are aspects related to proper breathing, and how you follow through, how you react to recoil and how to compensate for it. Of course, all of these combine to ensure that the long-range shooter is offered the tools to employ those skills that ensure success for shooting over long distances. Also, a good instructor will indeed look at and discuss the best rifle options for this discipline, as part of their training program. Shooting instruction proves, time and again, that it gives the shooter an important grounding to be able to meet the demands of shooting – and hitting – over long and extreme distances.
