Long-Distance Shooting Is Best Enjoyed With Good Training as a First Requirement

Hunting and shooting are well-known passions for millions of people worldwide, and certainly for Americans too. There are several disciplines to choose from, and whether you prefer target shooting, wing shooting, or tracking elk and white-tailed deer, there will always be great opportunities to enjoy your preferred choice.

One specific discipline that appeals to an ever-growing number of shooters, is long-range or longdistance shooting. It is generally accepted that this discipline refers to distances of more than 800 yards, with distances of up to 200 yards being referred to as ‘short’ and those from 200 to 700 to ‘intermediary’. This is no hard and fast rule; however, it gives a good indication.

Long distances, depending on the circumstances, are also those referred to as being more than 700 yards. At some point, these are all relative to the circumstances, but the long-distance shooter certainly has more to deal with than a person shooting targets and prey at very short distances. Most experienced shooters and hunters will agree that, especially over longer distances, you do not simply turn up – you ensure that you receive some kind of training or instruction beforehand. That is why long-distance shooting classes and shooting schools have grown in popularity.

These facilities are found all over America, especially in regions where hunting is a popular pastime, for example, Texas and other states. At these schools or training facilities for the long-range shooter, well-devised programs are offered to ensure that both theoretical and practical instruction form part of the courses. Most good schools discern between courses for beginners, intermediary shooters, and those with previous experience, with some also offering courses for those that merely want to brush up on their skills.

At a good facility, you will be taught new things, shown how to improve on your current shooting status, and what you should do to ensure you master the long-range shooting requirements. Good schools normally offer their courses to appeal to different levels, many offering an introductory course and then courses for the experienced shooter. These courses are then designed to address general as well as specific issues that shooters need to be aware of when they attempt shooting over longer distances.

Good schools will also address unique circumstances and pay personal attention to the person that attends. You will get time in the classroom, where you will be able to ask questions about issues you are unsure about, and where, certainly, you will be taught all the important issues that impact your success as a long-range shooter. Topics that, typically, are discussed, are issues such as the importance of MOA, ballistic turrets and how to zero your rifle, how to read the wind and its deflection, and how this can impact your success at hitting the target. Other atmospheric conditions such as temperature (either hot or cold weather), mirages, and more issues will receive attention. All important fundamentals, including ballistics, receive attention.

Then you get time at the range, with instructors making sure you understand the importance of rifle sight, shooting positions, and techniques. You will be taught what your bad habits are and how to break them and make adjustments to give you a good grounding and foundation for success at long distances, those of 700 yards, 800, and over 1 000. Some shooters naturally have a good position behind their rifles whereas others drift to one side, often not being aware of this and the impact on their accuracy. The instructor will point out these things and show you how to improve your position – also your shooting stance in an upright position.

Issues such as finger placement when you fire are looked at, and so are discussions about your rifle, the stock, the barrel(s) you use, and all other related issues. Good instructors have seen it all, they understand, too, that long-range shooting is different from shooting over short distances. They offer experience, and the expertise one can benefit from to take to the field with confidence when you go up against yourself over long distances.
