Often The First Step Towards Success Is Preparation Hunters and other shooters understand that without some basic tools and proper preparation their chances of achieving success on the range or in the bush, or on the plain, may be doomed. This means the shooter needs to understand the demands that their specific discipline requires of them. It does not take a lot to know that the person shooting at stationary targets, or the one aiming at buck over, say, 300 yards, may need different skills and a different rifle to the one that sets out to hunt over longer distances, those that are typically referred to as long-range shooting distances. In this case one talks about distances of around 800 yards, and then there is still another category, which many refer to as the extreme long distance. These are distances of , for example, over a 1, 000 yards. Many factors discern these categories from one another. Certain ballistic, weather and environmental factors will have to be considered, For example, the person aiming at a 1, 000 yards may have to take issues such as glare, wind drift and speed into consideration, also gravity and bullet drop. Over shorter distances these factors are much less of an issue, but when you shoot long range, it is important to have a better understanding of those conditions that influence success, and skill sets are looked at differently. It is no longer only about perfect aim; it is also about taking into consideration the previously mentioned factors. Another very important factor to consider is the rifle you use. Not all rifles are necessarily meant to be used for long and extreme long-distance shooting. As is the case with all shooting disciplines, certain brands and models have discerned themselves over time to be seen as those that the serious hunter and shooter may have to consider. This means one has to consider, too, some important technical aspects that may influence the choice of the rifle one acquires for this discipline. One such issue, for example, is caliber selection in order to feel you have afforded yourself the best option for long-range shooting purposes. It depends on, for example, what your goals are and what, indeed, budget allows. For example, the .308 Winchester has been, for many, a true and trusted friend, whereas another may be willing to fork out more and acquire, for example, the .300 Magnum. Other options in this regard see some prefer the 6mm or 6.5mm Creedmoor, .260 Remington, .300 Winchester Magnum, the .338 Lapua Magnum, the Sig Cross, the Ruger Hawkeye and a host of others, to include also the outstanding PROOF Research models. More issues to be considered include, for example, muzzle velocity, recoil, barrel life and features such as, say, carbon fiber or steel, ballistic co-efficient among the issues. These are often favored by hunters and other shooters due to the great feedback they receive from individuals that use them and continue to support these brands. In terms of, for example, the PROOF Research it is noted that different models all enjoy their own following among the long-range shooters, such as the Tundra 300 WSM, the Conviction TI 28 Nosler, the Elevation MTR 270 WIN and the Glacier and Competition rifles as well. Of course there are other brands and factors to consider, and therefore all long-range shooters should look around for the best options to suit their specific profile, and the goals they have in mind. Some good retailers and services are always happy to offer advice, to discuss those issues that

shooters may feel unsure of, such as what the best ammo would be for their rifle, or what scopes one should be looking at to feel confident about taking to the field. A good starting point is to look at the options different retailers and gunsmiths have to offer. The first step towards success, therefor, is often good preparation – such as choosing the most appropriate rifle.
