Long Range Shooting and the best Rifles

Long Range Shooting and the best Rifles Not all sporting disciplines require the same kit or equipment. This is also true for the hunter and shooting enthusiast: some will use a rifle, others a shotgun or revolver, for example. Some are happy to shoot targets at short range – others prefer a much longer range. Those that prefer to shoot at targets such as buck during the hunt of up to – and more than 1,000 yards, for example, are in a different category to the shooter or hunter that has a target at much shorter distances in their sight. This means they may hunt or shoot in different areas, and could well want and need to use a different type of firearm. Long-range shooting, typically, requires of the shooter to take various issues into account in addition to the distance, for example, aspects relating to ballistics which refer to the launch and flight behavior of bullets fired at the target; also, wind direction and speed should always be taken into account. It is easier when the distance is short: you simply adjust the sights on your rifle. When, however, you deal with much longer distances, wind drift and patterns will have a definite influence on the way the bullet travels – and the precision, or lack thereof. The shooter’s skills may no longer be the only important requirement for success – other factors start to influence the precision with which a skilled hunter or shooter enters the field. Long-range is normally anything above 600 yards and extreme long-range distances more than 1,000 yards. Some shooters visit ranges where they can practice their skills, and improve upon them, by the distances they want to master. Some do this for pure leisure; others prepare themselves for hunting purposes, for example. In addition to the wind, for example, other factors may play a deciding factor in terms of which the shooter will hit the target or not. Some of these include aspects related to the bullet shape and its weight, air pressure and humidity, temperature of the air and the rifle’s barrel, for example, and angle to one’s target - in other words are you uphill or downhill. All of these factors combine to influence the accuracy with which one hits – or misses – the target: of course, this may lead to great frustration for many. Therefore a great number of shooters such as hunters – even those taking part in competition shooting – book classes from the experts who can train them what factors they should always consider, how these all combine to interfere with precision and how to work around these issues.
