Hunters That Prepare Well, Often Enjoy Success There are few things as disappointing for the hunter and shooter that arrive excited about a day in the field, the bush, at the shooting range, only to leave frustrated because they missed their targets. For the deer and elk hunter – and similar animals –accuracy first time is often of the essence as you get one chance only. Also, prey is often hunted over long distances and not necessarily at 200 or 300 yards. Long-range hunting is widely practised in America and elsewhere and often attracts enthusiasts that prefer to hunt their animals over distances of 800 and more yards – also over 1,000. Long-range hunting has its own demands and expectations; it requires different levels of skill than would be expected of the hunter that shoots and hits at shorter distances. It also means making sure you have the right firearm, certainly one that offers those features that other – even lesser – rifles may lack. One of the first considerations, therefore, for the long-range hunter would be to make sure their rifle meets those demands that will support the hunter’s efforts. For example, over long distances, you cannot afford to arrive with a rifle that is not known for being the accurate – first time around. There are no second chances. Every experienced hunter – especially over the longer distances – knows that MOA (minute of angle) is important: to be truly accurate, a good hunting rifle will offer a shot dispersion in inches at 1’’ per 100 yards (in fact, 1.047”). Because the MOA converts to different sizes at different distances, 10” at 1,000 yards, for example, is still only 1 MOA. This means it is important to ensure you have the best rifle for your long-range hunting outing. To ensure you achieve the desired MOA, you need to acquire a really good rifle, and you may indeed have to take it to a gunsmith to tune it for accuracy. So, make sure you get a great rifle from a leading brand known for its successes over long distances, such as, say, the PROOF Research, the Browning Long Range Hunter, the Mauser M18, the Proof Switch and one or two others. These rifles are designed with the long-range shooter in mind and meticulous manufacturing processes play an important part. For example, the PROOF Research rifle for the long-range hunter is manufactured with the latest gun manufacturing processes and technology uppermost in the mind of the designers of this (and others) brand. Features that weigh heavily are, for example, minimum weight and durability – with match grade precision an important factor. Because long-range hunting is practised in different terrain such as the open, on the
