Enthusiasts Can Learn A Lot At Long-Range Shooting Class It is probably safe to say that hunters all over the world share certain characteristics and qualities that all of them can easily relate to, such as the anticipation, the thrill of success in the field and the feelings of accomplishment once you look at your trophy. This is true for the competition shooter, the hunter stalking his prey, and the hunter or shooter that surpasses their own expectations. Also, not all hunters necessarily enjoy the same disciplines. Some may enjoy hunting over the so-called shorter distances such as 100 or 200 yards. Another hunter may feel he is better challenged over, say 300 or 400 yards. Then there is, of course, the group of hunters that prefers medium or long-distance shooting. Long-distance hunting, obviously, may require a different skill set, as being successful and hitting target at long distances may be more difficult than doing so when the target is relatively close by. And this is where training – and even shooting school - plays an important part for the shooter. In a country such as the US, and specifically in states such as Texas that are famed for their hunting, shooters and hunters are offered great opportunities to either learn, or improve, upon their knowledge and skill as these relate to the success the hunter expects to enjoy. As is the case with all sports disciplines and other activities that rely on skill, the hunter that makes the best of the opportunity to learn, to practice and improve, has the best chance to succeed. Throughout the US these training schools ensure that they help prepare the hunter to be ready when they take to the field, by offering them a variety of instruction in the classroom, followed by practical experience. As these schools have shown themselves to be successful, more and more new hunters – and also those with previous experience – inquire, and enroll for courses. Introductory instruction is a good starting point for the less experienced, whereas advanced courses will benefit the hunter that wants to be taught additional techniques. In the classroom various issues will be discussed to help the hunter prepare for that time when they are up against their buck or other target, which can be quite intimidating for the inexperienced hunter, especially if it is at long distances. Topics that are typically discussed are ammunition, the best rifle, MOA and what that means to the longrange shooter. MOA, or “minute of angle”, for example, refers to the adjustments the shooter has to make on the scope of their rifle to properly sight in and also allow for bullet drop at different distances, a very important factor for the long-range hunter. Attendees are taught what they may be doing wrong. Of course, courses may be different, but they are all meant to advise, to instruct, to prepare the individual. Because hunters have choices, it is good to know that in Texas, for example, there are indeed good training facilities and schools all around the state where existing knowledge can be reinforced, and new knowledge gained. For example, shooters are taught about the correct body position when they prepare for the shot, especially at the longer distances, they are taught how to position themselves in all body positions, be that standing upright, kneeling or lying on their tummy. The instructor will show the student the correct stances and other positions, and how these can influence their success. Finger placement on the trigger is extremely important too. Students are taught how to breathe as they prepare and release, they are taught about the effects of recoil, they are taught how the weather may indeed impact their success and what they should allow for in overcast conditions – and on very hot days when the sun may be beating down. Good shooting schools employ experienced instructors that have not only taught, but have great experience at hunting, competition shooting and all-important aspects relating to the requirements for successful longrange shooting. Attending shooting school is often the most important first step for the long-range hunter that wants to be well prepared when they set out.
