About Some Training Tips For The Long-Range Shooter Hunters and shooters all have their favorite shooting disciplines, whether that is merely target shooting at the range, or competition shooting, or hunting on the plain, in the bush or in the mountains. All of these come with their own challenges and feelings of satisfaction when the shooter/hunter achieves success. Some hunters and shooters prefer to shoot over shorter distances, whereas another group’s favorite is longer, and even extreme long distances. Short distances are those under 300 yards, medium distances up to, say, 600 yards and long distances between 600 and 1 000 yards, with extreme long distances more than that, and even up to a mile. Long-range shooting is one of the fastest-growing shooting disciplines in rifle sports when increased interest over the past few years is considered. As is the case with any sport or activity that needs to be taught, or where skills have to be trained and sharpened, long-distance shooting has its own demands – if you want to make sure you give yourself the best chance at success. For example: training courses or training school is almost compulsory for the beginner, while the experienced long-range shooter can certainly benefit from attendance too to sharpen up previous knowledge or to be taught advanced methodology. The long-range shooter has to be taught all of those important principles that will affect accuracy over the longer distances, and it makes perfect sense that a good trainer, or training school, should be approached for one or more of their courses. It is important to attend a well-respected school that offers experience in this regard, since, unlike over shorter distances, the long-range shooter or hunter often has one chance at success only; therefore first-short accuracy should never be compromised as you may not get a second chance at the same target. In states where hunting and shooting are actively pursued all the time, such as, say, Texas, good shooting schools, for example the one run by Evolved Ballistics at South Ranch Hills, are popular. Of course there are other similar shooting instruction facilities as well. At these facilities attendees can expect to be taught all the important principles that form the basis of successful long-range shooting. Instructors at these courses will ensure that they recommend good reading, articles and video clips to the attendees that they can study in their own time. In class important issues such as the most important equipment will be discussed, such as the best rifle for long-range shooting. A few do come to mind, with the Proof Research and its different models, for example, being right up there at the top. Trainers will also impress upon attendees at their course the importance of a good targeting scope and reticle with adjustable Mil or MOA. turrets. Turrets that can be adjusted for precision, is important when choosing a scope. Also look out for good optics and quality magnification when choosing your scope. A good instructor touches on all of these important points. Good instruction for the long-range shooter also considers the ammunition one uses, the ballistics calculator, which is used to convert important environmental data and information into a trajectory correction which is necessary when the long-range shooter wants to hit target. Environmental data plays an important part in terms of which the success of the long-range shooter can be influenced. Reading the wind, and its speed, bullet drop because of, for example, air pressure and temperature are issues that are discussed and looked at so that the long-range shooter can make the necessary adjustments. Precise ballistics data are important when the long-range shooter is out there; at shooting class this is discussed, as well as all other environmental factors, including those mentioned earlier. Other issues are also touched upon, such as what the best long-range rifles are and what MOA it can hold. Instructors discuss accessories such as bipods and slings, what the best triggers are, the best barrels and the fit between stock and action. All of these factors are important for the success of the long-range shooter and are discussed at a good shooting training school. Attending one of these courses is often a good starting point for the inexperienced long-range shooter.
