ommunicating networks link the world of computing and telecommunications, and computer networking, the internet, and mobile communications are amongst the most highly sought after skills in the computing industry today. The Computer Networks are the basis for all these and hence they are becoming increasingly essential for all the areas of our contemporary digital world, such as education,

government, industry etc. The MSc Advanced Computer Networks of the University of Derby at Mediterranean College, covers all the required knowledge and technical skills for the professional or the postgraduate student to drastically increase the knowledge and the deeper understanding of this fascinating, yet demanding discipline.

Our identity

You will develop a critical and in-depth awareness of the theory, methods, and issues involved in the design, development and deployment of modern wireless networks. You will also focus on secure systems and look at advanced concepts in ethical systems penetration, attack signature detection and mainstream host based and network based protection methods.

Mediterranean College is the first private Anglophone College in Greece (1977) and has been operating since then according to standards of countries with a tradition in higher education, such as the UK and the USA. The College is accredited by the Hellenic Ministry of Education and by the British Accreditation Council as an institution providing higher education. The degrees are awarded directly by the partner University, are professionally equivalent to the ones awarded by Greek State Universities and are also recognised by the UK NARIC.

Overview In developing the programme we have been in consultation with leading employers and industry to ensure the content is relevant and contemporary. You will look at the latest trends and issues in distributed computer architecture and implementation, as well network management and maintenance and the methodologies and approaches used to plan, configure, and verify the implementation of complex enterprise LAN and WAN routing solutions. www.medcollege.edu.gr

The whole programme is brought together by an indepth project in an area of your choice, which may be focused on your current role if you are studying part time, or which could be in an area where you see your career developing.

Why choose this course By choosing this particular course, you will learn theoretical and practical skills using our dedicated networking laboratory. The program follows certain aspects of the CISCO CCNP syllabus, which means that your practical skills will be developed even further. You will learn up to date technologies, security as well as distributed computing. Hence you’ll be equipped for a successful career in network support or programming. Alternatively you could pursue further research leading to a PhD. It’s a unique programme that concentrates exactly on what its title mentions – Advanced Computer Networks.

Structure & Content Mode: Full-time (1 year) or Part-time (2 years) Starts: February or October Language: English The programme expands in areas of Routing and Switching, Network Management, Network Security, Wireless and Mobile Communication and Academic Research Methods, thus giving the students practical experience in networking and technological applications with the aid of the network simulator (networks development suite) provided by the state of art, Cisco certified College’s labs. It follows the syllabus of the CISCO CCNP for those who have already obtained the CCNA. If you’re not already qualified to CCNA you join our CCNA Academy as well.

Studying at Masters Level and Research Methods This module will develop your ability to study at masters level and help you to develop, plan and execute a research project.

Securing Networks This module is all about ensuring your network is safe from external and internal risks of all kinds. You’ll look at firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems, host based protection mechanisms, antimalware tools and techniques, access control lists and implementing security policies for network operating systems.

Advanced Network Routing

Mobile and Wireless Networking You’ll demonstrate a critical and in-depth awareness of the theory, methods and issues involved in the design, development and deployment of modern wireless networks.

Network Management Concepts

You’ll develop the methodologies and approaches used to plan, configure and verify the implementation of complex enterprise LAN and WAN routing solutions.

You’ll learn how to comprehend, critically evaluate and analyse recently published information in the area of network management, including a reflective evaluation of impact network management.

Advanced Network Switching

Independent Scholarship

You’ll critically evaluate the use of advanced switching in the context of a detailed case study and demonstrate a critical awareness of the technology and issues involved in the application of advanced switching to a range of network designs.

During this module you’ll integrate the knowledge you’ve gained in other modules to formulate, research and resolve a real world, commercial IT problem. You’ll present your findings and solution in the form of a dissertation.

Learning, Teaching & Assessment Our learning techniques include lectures, seminars, discussion groups, practical sessions, presentations and blended learning. The students are also encouraged to attend the wide range of networking and security related seminars and discussions that take place in our facilities, leaded by industry and academia experts in the corresponding area. The assessment methods include a mixture of coursework and examinations. There will be a range of coursework techniques including analytical essays, reports on lab based problems, assignments using case studies, multi-task portfolios and presentations.

Accreditation The programme is offered in Greece, through a franchise academic agreement between Mediterranean College and the University of Derby, UK. Students that successfully complete the programme, will be awarded with an internationally recognised Master’s degree by the University of Derby. The partner university has constant supervision and the responsibility to assure the quality of the College’s provision at all levels. The Master’s degree, awarded by the University of Derby after completing the programme in Greece, is recognised by the Greek state as equivalent to the Greek State Universities (AEI or ATEI) degree. It is also recognized by the UK NARIC (National Recognition Centre), the equivalent body to the Greek DOATAP.

Our staff Our staff will help you throughout your studies to achieve your maximum potential. They are highly trained and very experienced people, either from the academia or from the industry, ready to carry their valuable experience in the classroom. Most of them have a high number of research publications in international conferences and journals. They are all Accredited Lecturers by the University of Derby and certified by the Greek Ministry of Education. See our staff full CVs on our website www.medcollege.edu.gr

Employability You will have excellent employment and earnings potential as prospects include working for network consultancy companies, providing in-house network support and administering networks. There is also a growing demand for specialists in network security and in network programming. Furthermore, our College encourages the participation of all our students to events such as the Employability Weeks and the Employability Fair, where the students get in contact with well-established companies in the area of telecommunications and computing, as well as professionals that can help them enhance their skills for succeeding in their professional careers or improving their current positions. Also, these schemes pose great chance for “networking” with many successful professionals in these areas. Read more about our integrated Employability Scheme at www.mc-employability.gr
