Motoring Tips - Buying a second hand car Buying a Second Hand vehicle can be an exciting time, but knowing what to look for and the questions to ask when you have found your ideal car can be the key to having the smoothest experience. Thomas James, director and owner of Tickeham Garage, advises us this month about what to do when looking for your next car.

W

e are often asked why someone would buy a car from a dealer rather than a private seller. To us the answer is very clear, but often people see they can save a bit of money by buying privately.

Dealers have access a wide range of warranties - at Tickenham Garage we use Warrantywise, who cover many more items than some of the other companies on the market.

Buying a car from a dealer can give you maximum peace of mind and legal protection, so if something goes wrong, you, the buyer, are protected.

When a car goes for sale, it should go through a full inspection and should be serviced to manufacturers specification prior to sale. This will give you the peace of mind that the vehicle is ready for you to enjoy.

Dealers are obliged to place a used car warranty on vehicles that retail over £1000, and this often covers mechanical breakdown in the unfortunate event that something goes wrong with the vehicle during the warranty period.

Dealers will also complete HPI checks on the vehicle to ensure that it is legally able to be sold and is not owned by a finance company. This also checks that the vehicle has not been stolen or involved in an accident.

If buying a car privately, it is advisable to get a full check on the vehicle by a reputable mechanic or third party company who is not associated with the seller. This way you can be sure that the vehicle is safe for you to drive and does not have any underlying issues. It is important that you ask to see all the service information that is available for the car to ensure that the car has been maintained regularly. Tickenham Garage is a Which? Trusted trader family run business based just outside of Nailsea, Portishead and Clevedon who also retail used vehicles which have undergone extensive checks prior to sale.

Batty about Bats!

Y

atton and Congresbury Wildlife Action Group (YACWAG) members are working hard to learn more about our local bats.

Bats are mammals with super-skills like echo-location, enabling them to zoom around at high speed in the dark. Their mysterious abilities have led to their reputation as scary creatures and there are many myths around bats which are completely untrue. This area is a bat hot-spot with 13 species to be found around Yatton and Congresbury. The internationally rare Greater Horseshoe bat is one of the highlights locally as there is a maternity roost in Brockley. Tony Moulin, YACWAG’s Chairman, says that bats can help us too: “Knowledge about flight-paths used by these rare bats can be crucial in protecting our countryside. The bats use watercourses and hedgerows to navigate around, and their rare status means that developers have to take their flight routes into account.” YACWAG has been carrying out bat surveys for 12 years, including regular bat transects in Claverham and Congresbury for the National Bat Monitoring Programme.

would like to help, please get in touch through www.yacwag.org.uk. No prior knowledge is necessary as full training will be given. Primary schools in Claverham, Congresbury and Yatton have benefited from YACWAG’s support to learn more about nature. Now the group intends to expand its activities to help children and young people find out more about bats. The Co-op food store in Yatton has chosen YACWAG as one of its beneficiaries of its Community Fund. (Find out more in the store.) Funds raised will be used to buy more ‘entry-level’ bat detectors so that school groups, Brownies, Cubs and other children will be able to have access to a bat detector on walks, giving them a close-to-nature experience.

The group is keen to involve more people in the world of bats and has been successful in raising a grant of £2450 from Bristol Airport to buy new state-of-the-art bat detectors which are more user-friendly. These will be used in the local parishes most affected by aircraft to find out more, in particular, about Greater Horseshoe bats. If anyone

“Morning mile” proving success for pupils at St Andrew’s Primary School

C

hildren at St Andrew’s Primary School in Congresbury are starting their day fighting fit before settling down for a mornings work.

The school introduced a “morning mile” for pupils towards the end of September and it takes place on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Children who are “ready to run” can do as many or as few laps as they like in ten minutes around a marked track of cones on the playground.

passports every time they do it. The stamps are then added up at the end of term and the children are awarded in assembly with certificates. It is a fabulous idea and one that has taken to as a whole school as teachers, parents and the head also join in. Julie added: “On average we have 100 taking part every day and the staff are also benefitting from doing it as well. Children who haven’t been taking part see others do it and want to join in which is great.”

They have calculated that 13 laps equals one mile and youngsters can run, walk or jog. Julie Mayo, a parent support and learning mentor at the school who helped launch the initiative, explained: “It was something that has been successful in other areas of the country and research shows that it helps attainment levels and success in the classroom. “It started as a way to encourage children who were late to get them into school on time – that was our first target and for some it has really worked. Our main aim now is “mind, body and soul” and it is good for the children’s wellness and fitness. “It has really kept their interest and as a result has been very successful. The parents have also been really supportive.” Children that take part get a stamp in their special

for Parish Council service A Yatton resident has been awarded the Honorary Freedom of the Parish in recognition of his years of service to the parish as a member of the council.

M

aurice Blunsdon officially gave up sitting on Yatton Parish Council two years ago at the last election due to hill health after 38 years.

The 77 year old, who suffers from post polio syndrome, was recently invited to Hangstones Pavilion by the Parish Council and presented with a framed certificate and card. It is an award that had never been given out in the parish before. Maurice, who has been married to June for 56 years, said: “It was a really lovely surprise to receive the award as some people are on councils for a long time and don’t get any recognition.

issues for the disabled, like helping to get dropped curbs around the village and automatic doors in the shops.” In times gone by, such an award meant that you could take your sheep or cattle through the village. However grazing rights are not part of the modern freeman’s privileges. Maurice said: “I don’t have any sheep anyway, so that’s all right.”

“If it hadn’t been for my health I would have kept going. I do miss it but you’ve got to retire sometime haven’t you?” Having moved to the area 55 years ago, Maurice has seen the village evolve as a resident. “There were only 4,000 people in Yatton when we moved here and it is changing all the time. I liked the challenges you faced on the council, meeting people and hearing their points of view on matters like housing and planning. “Most of my time in those years was spent on planning and

Somerset Steam Evening in Yatton

A

n evening of railway nostalgia will be held in aid of the Strawberry Line Cafe on Thursday, November 17, at Horsecastle Chapel, Horsecastle Farm Road, Yatton. An illustrated talk entitled ‘Somerset Steam’ will be given by Gerry Nichols. His photo, which is pictured above, was taken at Yatton and shows a train on the far left waiting to go to

Clevedon and one on the mainline heading to the South West. The Strawberry Line Cafe on Platform 1 of Yatton station is a charitable organisation which trains and employs young adults with learning disabilities. All proceeds on the night will help them with necessary updating and maintenance of the cafe, which is in an original Grade 2 Brunel-

designed building. Admission to the event, which starts at 7.30pm, is £3. Refreshments by the cafe will be on sale and there will also be a railway book stall from Yatton Books and Prints featuring local railway books, as well as a raffle. For more information, contact Trevor on 01934 835208.

Librarians across the South West have chosen their theme for the new Reading Passport challenge and this year they’ll be time-travelling through a selection of the most iconic authors of the past 100 years with the Book to the Future challenge, including a selection of the top new writers to look out for in the decade to come. As usual readers will be asked to use the Reading Passport to explore the treasures contained in North Somerset libraries and collect their passport stamp as they complete each book. Anyone who completes and returns their full Book to the Future journey by collecting a stamp from their library for each decade will be entered into a regional draw to win a suitcase full of books to keep them busy on their travels. You can see details of the suggested books at www.readingpassport.literatureworks.org.uk For more information, ask at your local library.

Yatton PACT

M

any people in Yatton have never heard of PACT (Police and Communities Together). The group interact with local policing to make the local community safer and more pleasant to live in. Meetings take place about every two months and are usually held at Hangstones Pavilion. Several parish councillors attend

these meetings regularly together with the local beat police officer who keeps visitors abreast of local crime and the results of investigations. Any problems can be brought to the meeting for discussion and help. The PACT is supporting the Parish Council in formulating the Neighbourhood Plan which will be beneficial in helping to influence future planning in Yatton and Congresbury. An active part of PACT is Speedwatch which is in collaboration with the traffic police. A survey showed that the major concern of residents is the volume and speed of traffic using the roads and the number of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) going through the two villages. Speedwatch has helped to slow people down and a recent HGV Watch survey carried out by members of Yatton PACT, which saw a total of 315 heavy goods vehicles using Henley

Lane, Yatton from 7am-6pm and 506 in Arnolds way, Yatton in the same period, will also bolster opposition to further house-building plans. Organisers are desperately short of volunteers to help with the sessions so if you could help, if only for an hour a month, please contact Mavis Monahan on 01934 709512 or mavis@monahan. co.uk or Jean Stevenson on 01934 877570 or jhs@stevensons-uk.com.

As the association approaches their biggest event in the calendar, the school’s Christmas Fair, Helen Woolford, the co-Chair of the PTA, is desperate to get some new members on board. Helen said: “With increasing strain on the school budget we are under pressure to continue to provide fundraising events and activities for the children with an ever decreasing committee. “We understand that parents have a number of commitments, and we managed to get a couple of new people at our recent Annual General Meeting, but we still need more. “We tend to get people helping when we hold events; it’s the support in the background that we struggle with, things like helping with the planning of them.” For more information on joining the PTA

contact Helen Woolford on 07799595822 or hwoolford77@gmail.com. The annual Christmas Fair takes place on Friday, December 2 at the school, in Station Road, Congresbury, from 5.30-7pm is open to the whole community and will feature stalls, a Santa’s Grotto, a raffle with a fantastic star prize and much more. Helen added: “We are looking for external stall holders for the fair. It costs £10 a stall and they have to donate a raffle prize. Then they keep any profits made.” For more information on having a stall at the Christmas Fair, telephone Lou on 07979 803313.

Work starts at North Somerset Community Hospital in Clevedon

I

mprovement work has started at North Somerset Community Hospital in Clevedon. The hospital, in Old Street, Clevedon, had its inpatient facility temporarily closed back in March of this year following a report by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

NHS Property Services have now completed a full review of the work required to ensure that the building is safe and meets legislative requirements. The total project cost will see £417,000 invested in upgrading the hospital. Following the review, the works to the hospital include replacement flooring throughout the hospital, an upgrade to the lift, remedial building works, roof and window repairs and redecoration. Judith Brown, Chief Executive, North Somerset Community Partnership (NSCP), said: “The community hospital is a valuable asset for patients across North Somerset. “Since March we have been working with partners across the NHS to ensure the hospital is updated to continue to meet the needs of the residents of North Somerset.” Over the last few months care has continued for patients in North Somerset with NSCP staff, previously working at Clevedon Hospital, providing the same quality of care in patients’ own homes. The work only affects the inpatients department. All outpatient clinics, x-ray and the minor injury unit will remain open for business as usual.

CELEBRITIES WEAR COUNTRY INNOVATION You might be forgiven for thinking that Country Innovation in Broad Street, Congresbury, is just a nice outdoor clothing shop, but behind the façade there lies a much bigger picture. The company was founded some 20 years ago by local businesswoman Maria Chilvers, to essentially provide good quality gear for the ever -growing country enthusiast. They develop their own range of clothing that are not only suitable for hillwalking/country walking, but also are perfect for anyone who is into bird/wildlife watching, wildlife photography or bushcraft activities. Garments are sent all around the world and are worn by several wildlife television presenters, including Simon King and Bill Oddie, and their Linnet Jacket has been developed with Simon King and is proudly hailed to be the ‘ the nearest thing to the perfect waterproof jacket’.

Cottage Tea Rooms

A

new eatery has opened at 102 Yatton High Street and those who visit will be welcomed by a very familiar face. Ann Carter has opened the Cottage Tea Rooms and it will be the third business she has run at the address. She first opened it in 1983 for 10 years as a cafe with a plant and botanical art shop behind it. Then, after travelling extensively in India and picking up how to cook the local dishes, she opened it as an authentic Indian food restaurant called Laziz. In 2011 she decided to retire and Kevin Rogers took over the restaurant and opened it as a bistro for four years before returning to New Zealand. It is open Tuesday-Saturday from 9.30am-5.30pm (however this may

be changed to 5pm in the future) serving breakfast until 11.30am and a variety of light lunches until 2.30pm. Afternoon tea will be served from 3pm and will include cream teas and a special West Country celebration tea which includes a glass of champagne All food will be homemade and all ingredients are locally sourced. The venue can also be hired in the evening for dinner parties and seats 24 comfortably. Ann, who has lived in Yatton for 36 years, said: “I am pleased to be reopening and doing the work that I enjoy for the people of Yatton.”

Don’t be put off by thinking it is all top end gear though, as the shop stocks a full range of clothing and footwear at very competitive prices.

Creativity and confidence thrive at

Stagecoach Performing Arts

E

ight year-old Jamie is a lively girl and sings and dances around her bedroom, but when she was out and about she was more reserved and shy, until she joined Stagecoach.

“At Stagecoach we teach our students so much more than how to sing, dance and act. We help them blossom into well-rounded individuals, ready to embrace life and all its opportunities.

“I couldn’t believe it!” her mum Vicki said. “After only a few sessions at Stagecoach I felt Jamie was so much more confident and happier in herself. She laughs and talks to people much more now, and she expresses herself with so much energy.”

“We delight in seeing our students have fun, make friends, learn new skills and discover hidden talents. We encourage them to take ‘safe risks’ through rehearsals and performance, which brings out a willingness to take on challenges.”

Principal Heidi Hollis said: “Children like Jamie really benefit from our thriving, nurturing, supportive and inspirational environment. Our classes really make a huge difference in their lives.”

Local classes run during school term time in Portishead, Long Ashton, and across the greater Bristol area for youngsters aged four-18. New students are welcome to start with a two week trial to try before they commit.

Managing Director Sarah Kelly added:

Q A

Are fleas becoming resistant to Frontline?

A recent study showed that fleas took slightly longer than expected to die after treatment with fipronil (the active ingredient in Frontline and several other products) but the fleas did still die. There is currently no evidence of resistance to any of the veterinary recommended flea products on the market, including Frontline. There are some new products available for dogs and cats that have some additional benefits over traditional products, which is why we have started to recommend these products for our clients’ pets. To achieve good flea control we must treat all dogs and cats throughout the year, at the correct interval for the chosen product. There is no evidence that it is possible to repel fleas from your pet, although physical removal with a

HEALTHY BUNNIES Rabbits are popular pets. They have traditionally been kept in hutches, but they can also be trained as excellent house pets, although you may have to do a bit of work to make your house rabbit friendly as they have a particular fondness for chewing through electric wires. Rabbits are not good at showing when they are unwell or in pain, so it is important to have regular health checks with your vet or nurse. They enjoy regular company and if you know your rabbit well, you will recognise when they are quieter or less happy to see you and that can be an indicator of discomfort or ill health. In your daily handling you should check ears and skin. Any scratching or dandruff might indicate mites. In warm weather, it is very important to regularly check their rear end for fly strike. The most common health problem in rabbits, however, is bad or sore teeth or dental related mouth problems caused by the wrong diet. Problems occur when they are fed a diet which is low in calcium – this causes their bones to be soft and allows their teeth to move in their sockets. As the teeth continue to grow, sharp spikes continue to grow into the cheeks and tongue. This is very painful for the rabbit and they will often stop eating altogether. Rabbits can thrive on a diet solely of good quality hay, although the perfect diet will include a very small amount of concentrated rabbit mix that will include minerals and vitamins. Fresh fruit and vegetables such as cauliflower leaves, broccoli leaves, lettuce, watercress, spinach, cabbage, dandelions, carrot tops and pea pods can also be fed, but consider these as a treat and give sparingly.

Embrace the colours of autumn By Elly West

E

very garden, whatever its size, should have at least one tree. Trees bring height to a space, are generally low maintenance, and can bring added benefits in terms of shade, screening, fruit, berries, somewhere to hang a swing, and more. Look around this autumn for trees that really stand out for you. Maybe a rowan with its graceful arching

branches and colourful berries? Or something more formal, suited to a smaller space, like a Japanese maple. Autumn is the time when many trees come into their own and showcase their colours. Just one will give your garden a focal point that is everchanging throughout the year. Amelanchiers are my particular favourite. Delicate bronze foliage

combined with pure-white starry flowers in spring, followed by fresh summer leaves, purple-black berries, and then golden autumn hues. Multi-stemmed and not too large, what’s not to like? Choose a tree to plant now and you might be able to buy bare-root, often at a fraction of the cost of the same specimen potted up in compost at the garden centre.

PLANT OF THE MONTH There’s a reason why alliums have remained popular in show gardens at Chelsea and elsewhere for years. Generously dot them throughout the border and they’ll give your garden that wow-factor when they pop up in spring, with their starry, attention-grabbing globes in shades of purple and white. It’s not too late to plant bulbs now for a display next year. And then leave them standing for their beautiful seed heads that can last well into autumn. Try picking a few and spraying them gold for indoor Christmas displays. Elly West is a garden designer. For more details, visit www.ellyswellies.co.uk

Remember to test your

Smoke alarms advice

SAY FIREFIGHTERS

A

von Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) is supporting the national Fire Kills campaign to encourage people to test their smoke alarm this October.

Firefighters are reminding people to test their smoke alarm because they can only save lives if they work. Smoke alarms provide a warning that fire has broken out and could give occupants of a house vital extra minutes to escape, especially at night. Just two or three breaths of toxic smoke from a fire can cause a person to lose consciousness or even die. Between April 2015 and March 2016 AF&RS attended 539 house fires. There was no smoke alarm fitted in 185 (34%) of these, however this has improved by 7% compared with last year where 41% of homes had no smoke alarm. AF&RS Group Manager for Risk Reduction, Matt Peskett, said: “Smoke alarms really are unsung heroes, activating at the first sign of fire and giving occupants time to escape, especially at night. “The alarms should be tested regularly to check the batteries are working. It takes just a few seconds but could save the lives of you and your family in a house fire.”

Plug in grant for motorcycles and scooters now official By John Cant, Yatton & Congresbury Living’s motoring correspondent

T

he Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA) has announced that the public will soon be able to enjoy a subsidy for electric motorcycles and scooters, which has so far only been available for four wheel vehicles. Unlike cars, electric motorcycles and scooters can be charged at home or work using normal plug sockets, which makes them more accessible. The price of each vehicle will be

reduced by £1500 or 20% of the total purchase cost (screen price), whichever is the smaller number.

the MCIA says this should help make electric vehicles and travel more affordable for many people:

The grant will be made available for new road registered electric motorcycles and scooters reaching certain quality criteria, which include having a battery with 5 years warranty and a good range.

“This opens the door to zero emission transport to people who have not been able to afford electric cars, which tended to have been a ‘lifestyle choice’.

Customers wanting to buy an electric motorcycle will be able to find out which ones are eligible once manufacturers have applied for the grant and been accepted. This announcement comes as part of a £35 million boost for ultra low emission vehicles announced recently, to encourage the uptake of zero emission motorcycles and scooters. Steve Kenward, CEO of

“Motorcycles and scooters are an extremely accessible form of electric transport and have the capacity to significantly reduce congestion, since they share all the advantages of riding a regular powered two wheeler. Riders can filter through traffic, often use bus lanes and usually get closer to their end destination, cutting door to door journey times. “Motorcycles are exempt from congestion charges with ‘fuel’ costing the equivalent of a penny a mile and nothing to pay for vehicle tax, plus cheaper or free parking. Switching to an electric motorcycle or scooter could result in huge savings for the average commuter.”
