Note f rom the Editor One of the quirks of working on a monthly publication is that you’re always a month ahead of life in the real world, although the boundaries seem to have been more blurred than usual this year, with homes and businesses around town displaying some fantastic decorative festive cheer earlier than usual. We’re certainly not complaining! Against that sparkling backdrop, we’re delighted to bring you the second instalment of our Christmas Countdown, detailing what’s happening during the festive season locally, from carol services to fun runs. For many of us, Christmas is a time to get together with loved ones and over-indulge. On that note, we’re delighted to be giving away a wonderful hamper, in partnership with the Portishead-based independent eco grocer Earthfare. Details of how to win this fantastic, festive, fun prize are inside. Fun hasn’t always been in great supply this year, admittedly, but

there have been highs over the months, along with the lows, including incredible displays of resilience, companionship, kindness, creativity and, when needed, humour. It’s been a real joy and privilege to highlight your wonderful fundraising feats, small acts of neighbourliness, entrepreneurial achievements and impressive cultural events. A happy Christmas and wonderful new year from us all at Living!

Some 360 regulars in 24 teams enjoy playing skittles throughout the winter months in both Pill and Portishead pubs with alleys, playing across two leagues. However, some of the teams are keen to attract new members for the new year, when the League competition will restart, following the disruption caused by the pandemic and the loss of some skittle alleys. Amendments have been made to the rules to help prevent further declines, including a decision to include women in what was previously an all-men’s league. The game offers low-cost enjoyment for 2-3 hours every week throughout the dark winter months. For more information, contact the league secretary nigeljparsons@icloud.com.

Brrrraving the elements Working unsociable hours amid chilly temperatures outdoors when most people are inside must surely make gritter drivers the unsung heroes of winter months, especially as, thanks to them, roads remain ice-free and safer. It’s fair to also say that our local gritters have the ability to bring a smile wherever they go, thanks to their distinctive trucks bearing puns on familiar destinations: Burrrrrington, Bleadon-cold, Nailski, Portispread, Weston-scooper-Mare and Sleetholm, all names chosen by the public via a social media poll a few years ago. Despite the laughs, there is a deeply serious side to road gritting, as Phil Bush, highway operations and contracts manager at North Somerset Council, explained. “We tend to err on the side of caution,” he said, when asked if there had ever been a time when, in hindsight, gritters should have gone out but didn’t. “We base our actions and decisions on the forecast,” said Phil, adding that it is the road temperature rather than air temperature that is the critical factor.

6

| livingmagazines.online

Some of the funny puns on the Gritters.

To help the team make the right decisions, a specialist forecast for North Somerset is procured from Metdesk, which uses data from three weather stations across the district, at Bristol Airport, Churchill and Clevedon, measuring conditions for road moisture, wind speed and direction, and windchill factor among others. The season of gritting usually runs from the end of October to the end of March and is typically 26 weeks. The amount of runs in any year fluctuates. “Last year, we did 62 runs,” said Phil, “which was quite high, and the previous year it was less than 50, so it just depends.” Importantly, all gritters are now running on ethically sourced hydrogenated vegetable oil

(HVO) as a diesel fuel substitute, helping to reduce carbon emissions by 90%, as part of the council’s commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2030. As for the drivers themselves, there are 12 tasked with the job for the season, working a week on, week off rota. This isn’t their only job, however, in case anyone was wondering what gritters do when not gritting the road. By day they could be undertaking any maintenance work, such as unblocking drains, filling potholes or road resurfacing. “There is nobody who is just a gritter driver,” said Phil, a fact that, when combined with their crucial role in preventing road accidents, we can all surely agree on.

PORTISHEAD TOWN COUNCIL – ADVERTORIAL

Portishead Town Council Newsletter – November 2021

Salt Marsh noticeboard installed

Portishead Independents candidate Paul Churchill has been elected to Portishead Town Council in the South Ward by-election on October 7. Paul, who was born in North Weston and lives there now with his family, is a service delivery manager, managing global IT contracts.

Councillor Nicola Holland and Hilary Kington

A new noticeboard now takes pride of place at Portbury Wharf Salt Marsh. Located at the entrance near to Portishead Marina, the salt marsh is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, but few people know about this fragile habitat. Portishead Town Council and the Friends of Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve have been working together to change this. Portishead Town Council paid for one of its redundant silver notice boards to be refurbished and installed, while the Friends of Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve have created a series of panels to display the amazing facts about the salt marshes.

Do you know what’s under the mud and why the Severn Estuary is so important? There’s a lot to learn about our salt marshes and how we can all help to protect them. If you can’t wait to find out, you can get a sneak preview on the Friends of Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve website: portburywharfnaturereserve.co.uk/ salt-marsh Hilary Kington of the Friends of Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve said:

The salt marsh is a wildlife refuge as well as helping to protect our local and global climate. Did you know that salt marshes are much better at burying harmful carbon than rain forests?

“We have a biodiversity crisis as well as a climate crisis, so championing and protecting the salt marsh and its wildlife is a win-win scenario. If every community takes care of its green and wild spaces, it will add up to a big difference globally. We owe it to future generations to safeguard these precious places.”

Remembrance Parade

Tea and Tech success

After last year’s parade was cancelled due to the pandemic, hundreds of Portishead residents lined the High Street for this year’s Remembrance Parade, which took place on Sunday November 14. Chairman of Portishead Town Council, Councillor Patricia Sterndale, took the salute outside the Folk Hall with Derek Wilks, President of the Portishead branch of the Royal British Legion. They then attended the church service at St Peter’s, along with other council representatives. Numerous local groups joined in the parade, including Portishead Town Band, RNLI and Portishead Scout and Guide Groups.

The October Tea and Tech event, where residents can learn practical steps to improve their digital skills and socialise was held on October 20. It was a huge success and well attended by many local residents. The next event will take place on December 22 in the Folk Hall and is organised by the West of England Rural Network (WERN), on a project funded by St Monica Trust and Portishead Town Council. If you’d like to come along, please call Portishead Town Council on 01275 847 078 to book your place.

Chairman of Portishead Town Council, councillor Patricia Sterndale said, “We are delighted to welcome Paul to the team. His background, experience and enthusiasm will add yet another dimension to the already diverse mix of Portishead Independent councillors whose united purpose is to make Portishead a better place for everyone.” Paul added “Huge thanks to all the residents of Portishead South Ward who took the time to vote either by post or in person on the day, also to family and friends who supported me during the campaign. The hard work starts now, I will be the voice for those causes we feel so passionate about here and now and to listen to and support, both now and in the future, the people and groups of Portishead South Ward and the wider community for the benefit of us all.”

Bringing the real Christmas tree magic home

Helicopter propels festive fundraising to new heights

By James Shopland, Sawmills

When it comes to festive fundraising, the sky seems to be the limit, quite literally, for Clevedon couple John and Lucy Buck.

It’s fair to say that nothing can quite beat the magical feeling of having a real Christmas tree to decorate over the festive season. That’s why Shoplands’ locally sourced Christmas trees, both Nordmann Fir and Norway Spruce varieties, remain extremely popular year after year. Getting the most out of your tree, so that it looks its best over the Christmas period, is simple with a few handy tips. The first is to make sure you invest in a purpose-made stand big enough for your chosen tree’s height to ensure it remains upright, and to also opt for a stand that allows you to fill it with fresh water, as your tree will get thirsty and need plenty to drink if it’s going to stay beautiful once inside. To give it the best start, saw about 20-25mm from the bottom of the trunk and place the tree in a bucket of water overnight before you take it indoors. Keep checking on the water level in its stand over time, as it’s surprising how thirsty trees can

Christmas Countdown – Clevedon

Christmas is all wrapped up at Brambles

The half-sized helicopter (left) will take its place with the other exhibits (above) that make up the festive display.

emergency medicine to North Somerset, Bristol, Bath, North East Somerset, Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire and the surrounding areas. Lucy explained that John, who works in electrical installation, has spent most of 2021 working on the helicopter, which is made out of papier-mâché, helped by family and friends. She hopes passers-by will once again show their generosity in similar style as last year, when they threw money into the train’s letter/ moneybox, receiving a ‘hoot’ as a thank you, much to the delight of the younger onlookers. “Last year was a difficult year, so it was fantastic to bring a smile to so many faces and we look forward to doing the same this year, while raising money for a brilliant cause,” she said.

Those looking for an easy way to finish their Christmas shopping would be well advised to turn to Brambles of Clevedon, where both gifts and Christmas dinner essentials can be stocked up on. Bespoke hampers make an excellent choice for gifts, with mum and daughter duo, Loraine and Alex, happy to put together a hamper of your choice that is beautifully decorated and even delivered. What makes these hampers even more special is the fabulous selection of goods that can go in them, plenty of which are sourced from local businesses. Among the vast range are seasonal specialties, such as a mouthwatering selection of Christmas puddings, mince pies (including a gluten-free option) and Christmas chutneys, spice kits for mulled wine and cider, and locally produced tipples. For the fussiest of recipients, Brambles gift vouchers are also likely to hit the right

note. And, as the days count down to Christmas, Brambles is also at the ready to take orders for all your Christmas meats, including sausage meat, chicken and gammon joints, all locally sourced too. To discuss your bespoke hamper needs or find out more about ordering Christmas delights for the table, call 01275 870125 or email info@bramblesclevedon.co.uk, or better still, pop in and browse the enticing selection of wares at Brambles, located at 13 Old Church Road in Clevedon.

EARTHFARE – ADVERTORIAL FEATURE

A Christmas that’s big on taste and low on waste

Find the recipe for this p ie on the shop’s In stagram and Fac ebook pages, a s well as in sto re

Earthfare has all the ingredients you need for an environmentally friendly festive feast With the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) and reactions to it still hot topics of discussion as Christmas approaches, many of us will be giving thought to how we can do our bit for the planet while also celebrating the festive season in style. The good news is that it’s perfectly possible to embark on some welldeserved indulgence at the end of what is undoubtedly another difficult year with a clear conscience, while keeping the effects of our celebrations on the environment to a minimum. In fact, in some ways, it’s never been easier to have a relatively guilt-free, greener Christmas, since many of the steps involved in thinking about the planet tie in with other priorities, from shopping locally and supporting the community to eating well. This philosophy is one that the Quinlan family, who own and run the independent eco grocer Earthfare in Portishead and Glastonbury, have been championing firsthand for some time, both at home and in store. “Our festive get-togethers are always a fun time, with a table full with food, and this year won’t be any different, but what we’ve done over time is shifted the focus to vegetarian and vegan options to run alongside increasingly smaller meat and fish dishes,” Evie Quinlan, Portishead’s shop manager, explained. Evie gave the example of a plant-based Cranberry and Chestnut Christmas pie, which she said, together with similar dishes, had become something of a festive tradition and firm favourite with the family and guests, irrespective of whether or not they’re vegans. “Everyone loves the pie and is keen to secure a slice of it for themselves, either as a standalone meal or side dish, which is fantastic to see and just goes to show that using great-tasting, fresh ingredients will always produce a winner!” she said.

Earthfare’s Cranberry & Chestnut Christmas Pie.

The vegan pie that has enjoyed annual success over the years with the Quinlan household and guests has a delicious array of fresh, organic vegetables at its heart, enhanced by a medley of inseason and dried herbs, and served with lashings of gravy. A hearty dose of Somerset-produced Roots and Wings organic cranberry and spiced orange sauce makes for a fantastic final flourish. Local and organic ingredients are used wherever possible, with packaging kept to a minimum, which helps to reduce carbon footprint in terms of delivery and also supports local economies. These inspiring ingredients, together with many others, are all available at Earthfare, so do pop in and have a browse as you begin planning your Christmas menus.

No festive meal would be complete without a celebratory drink or two and, once again, local producers are doing themselves and us proud, with a wonderful range of beverages to choose from, including refreshing ciders, such as Earthfare’s own Woodshed variety, made from unsprayed Somerset apples and natural wild yeasts. Other options include a selection of delightfully light and crisp or rich and fruity wines that are vegan, sulphur-free and organically produced. Take your pick from the fantastic selection of red, rosé and white options on the shelves. Avoiding waste and minimising throwaway items is a widespread priority this Christmas, which makes food and drink the ideal gift in many ways, whether it’s a bottle of something special or delicious organic Fairtrade chocolate. Earthfare is brimming with fantastic food and drink ideas that make wonderful ways of exchanging Christmas greetings with family and friends. Leading the way when it comes to inspired failsafe gift ideas are the eco grocer’s make-yourown hampers. Aside from offering you an opportunity to personally handpick a tailored selection of items for loved ones, the process also ensures packaging is kept to a minimum, providing welcome reassurance that you’re subscribing to a festive season that’s big on taste and minimal on waste.

Top 10 tips for managing your money over Christmas

Reuse things from last Christmas.

By Ann Tarr, CAP Debt Centre Manager, Gordano Valley

Consider asking for gifts that you really need.

Ann said: “We know that most people want to have a nice Christmas, but it can seem hard to do when money is limited. This year has been challenging enough so we want to encourage people to follow these tips, and others they may see elsewhere, so that they can have a great Christmas, a more positive end to 2021, and not be worrying about the cost into 2022. Following these very simple tips can, hopefully, take some of the pressure off.” Make a Christmas budget. Create a budget based on what you can afford and stick to it. Don’t be ashamed to talk about your finances. If you’re worried family or friends may buy you a more expensive gift and you

New things are nice, but not always necessary. Alternatively, see if any of your family or friends have any Christmas stuff you can borrow.

Follow these simple tips to take the pressure off.

feel like you’ll have to return the favour, be open with them about what you can afford. Only buy Christmas presents for close family and friends. Prioritise gifts for those closest to you first. Avoid using credit or borrowing if you can. A great approach is to only buy what you can afford to buy, according to your budget. Make a food shopping list and only buy what you need. When you’re doing your food shop, make a list, check it twice and stick to it. It’s also good to plan your meals in the run up to Christmas to make sure nothing goes to waste.

It’s not wrong to want a little treat for Christmas, but asking for a gift that you need and planned to buy anyway will save you money. Start saving for next Christmas now. Maybe just start putting away £1 or £2 a week for Christmas next year, even if that doesn’t cover everything it’s much better than relying on just one payday to cover the whole of the festive period. Keep an eye on the energy you’re using. We know energy prices are on the rise so if you have Christmas lights, try not to keep them on all day. Seek free debt help if you’re already struggling. If you’re already in debt and worried the cost of Christmas will only make things worse, seek free, nonjudgmental debt help from Christians Against Poverty (CAP). Christmas Countdown – Portishead

Portishead, it’s snowtime!

Christmas hazards and our pets

Regardless of the weather forecast, a small corner of Portishead is bringing that magical snowy vibe to Christmas, thanks to the efforts of local resident Luke Sartain.

So, it’s that festive time of year and we are starting to feel merry as we decorate our houses and fill our cupboards with delicious treats. However, something we often forget to think about is the perils that Christmas can hold for our pets.

From 4pm to 9pm every evening up until the New Year, the front of Luke’s house in St Mary’s Road will be lit up like a winter wonderland with snowstorms, a holographic snowman and plenty of other delights, all with the aim of raising money for Bristol Children’s Hospital and Chernoybl Children. This is the second year that Luke has dressed his front garden for a worthy cause, having raised more than £4,000 last Christmas for the local food bank, when up to 100 visitors a night gathered to watch a holographic show. To show your support this year, you can donate online at shinebright. justgiving-sites.com/fundraising/ st-marys-road-portisheadchristmas-show

Raisins, sultanas and grapes are a common toxicity around Christmas time, and it’s easy to leave mince pies, Christmas pudding and Christmas cake unattended. Chocolate is also found in abundance around the house and sometimes even on the tree itself. We would not recommend the latter if you have pets - far too tempting and toxic! Alcohol is also a definite ‘no no’ for pets. It’s worth remembering that while you may well wish to enjoy a tipple yourself, our pets metabolise alcohol differently. If you are worried at all about anything your pet may have eaten, please give us a call straight away. Hopefully, we’ll be able to reassure you that they have not eaten a toxic dose of anything, but it’s definitely advisable to not wait to find out.

Do also keep decorations out of reach of pets - a shiny piece of tinsel or small toy for the tree may be accidentally ingested and no one wants their pet having surgery at Christmas. And finally check any flowers in the house. Remember, lilies are toxic to cats along with some other flowers. If you do wish to give your pet something for Christmas, we have lots of yummy festive treats and fun toys at the practice that are a safe option. Christmas Dubs rev up for fundraising drive

The legendary VDubs have taken their Christmas fundraising efforts up a gear this year by setting themselves a target of £10,000 which they hope to collect and donate to the Wallace and Gromit Grand Appeal, the Bristol Children’s Hospital charity. Last year Nailsea resident Steve Wright and friends raised both spirits and an impressive £8200 by touring the streets of Nailsea and surrounding areas in their VW T4s, complete with colourful festive flashing lights, while taking donations in buckets. Before touring, the vans are traditionally kitted out with a combined 980-metres’ worth of lights, held together by 2736 command clips. You can check this year’s itinerary by following them on Facebook at ChristmasDubs. The team are also running an online competition with some brilliant prizes, with a draw set to take place on Wednesday December 15.

Christmas Countdown – Feature

Let it snow!

As we were going to print, the odds of us seeing snow on Christmas Day stood at 8/1 or an 11.1% probability. In truth, none of us knows whether we’re in for a wet and windy festive season or magical white one. But we’re delighted that some of our readers and contributors have agreed to share their snow-filled memories with us. “This photo was taken by Derek Lilly, who enjoyed nothing more than taking a few foul weather shots, in spite of being 89 at the time (January 2013). The boy by the seat, digging in the snow, is finding it easier than trying to find sand on the beach! Seaside resorts are somehow unexpected places for snow, and the trees outlined in snow, the houses rising in tiers up the hill, all the white roofs throwing the houses into relief, are an unexpected sight. The little Regency houses on the beach look more like Neapolitan ice cream than usual.” Jane Lilly, local historian, Clevedon

Christmas Countdown – Feature “I worked as a milkman for about three years many moons ago and the weather around Christmas was always cold and wet, but rarely snowy. These photos of older times, however, give a different story. The dogs were ours and they loved the snow! The dairy was Horlicks at Clevedon, probably the heavy snow of the 1960s. The vans were electric and did not all go out that day - some just went along the roads and, if anyone wanted milk, they had to get to the vans. Happy days!” Pete Milsom, local historian, Portishead

“Does anyone remember the freezing rain in December 1995? On Saturday December 30, we set off early for Bristol as the rain started to freeze on the windscreen. The kids were amazed as none of us had ever seen anything like it before. As we approached the Galleries, we were surprised to see people walking in the gutter. We soon found out why – the pavements were like ice rinks. On the way home, we had to abandon the car in Down Road and continue on foot, or rather bottom, down to Hawthorn Close!” “In the early 1980s, I was manager of a local bank. The instruction in those days to employees was, if you were unable to get to work because of snow, you walked to your nearest branch. We normally had 11 staff at Nailsea and three at Backwell, but after heavy snowfall, I finished up with 20 staff at the former and six at the latter! I remember all the multi-coloured wellies lined up and, instead of one secretary demanding dictation, there were five. We were unable to travel for over a week.” Alan Davies, Rotary, Nailsea & Backwell (photo shows another local snowy occasion)

Barbara Thatcher, Portishead Open Air Pool (on another snowy occasion)

“I remember it was December 19, 2010, when I went to open Nailsea Foodbank in Southfield Road. I had a 20-minute walk to get there, carrying a snow shovel to clear some of the carpark in case any clients came. It was a good job I did – the snow had blown up against the church door to such a height that I had to clear it before I could even get to the keyhole to unlock the door. It took 10-20 minutes clearing snow away to open it outwards, just before the first client arrived!” Richard Worthington, Nailsea Foodbank

livingmagazines.online | 21

Christmas Countdown – Feature

“In early 2018, it snowed heavily overnight one Thursday, with the result that very few people could get to work on the Friday morning. My wife, Diane, and I decide to walk along Golden Valley into the centre of Nailsea to do some shopping. We were amazed as we had never seen so many people before walking that way and there was a party-like atmosphere. In Millennium Park, the silhouette statues of Wurzel Adge Cutler, philanthropist Hannah Moore and cidermaker Redvers Coates stood out as never before, against the snowy background.” Gordon Bennett, Nailsea Lions

“I’ll never forget the day in January 2011 when Portishead Marina froze over and was then covered in snow. During that difficult spell, the Canada geese and 20+ swans couldn’t access the underwater weeds they needed. The swans were wandering off along the roads looking for food and in danger from traffic. I mixed up a big bucket of mush in lots of water and took it up to the grassy area near the leisure centre. They were so hungry that they were tugging on my clothes to get attention and soon emptied the bucket.” Ken Barrett, Portishead Rotary

“December 2010, we had heavy snow over the holiday period. As per family custom, I spent Christmas with my family at my sister’s house in Sampford Peverell, near Tiverton. There was some panic buying of sledges from Bamburys in Tiverton and then my brother and I were able to discharge our duties as uncles with our young nephew with snowball fights and sledging in the local park. By day two he was able to steer his sledge all the way down the gentle slope and actually out the end gate into the car park, much to his delight. If the same photo were taken this year, he would now be taller than my brother by a couple of inches!” Clive Hawkins, Rotary, Nailsea & Backwell

New Year’s Revolution

A lot less bottle

January 1, 2022 is the ideal time for New Year’s Revolutions, says Nigel Hammond I can’t quite decide if it’s down to the underwhelming conclusions of COP26 or feeling inspired after reading Mahatma Ghandi’s autobiography in which he talks about how, by changing ourselves, we can help to bring about broader change worldwide. What I do know is that since turning the final page of this thought-provoking read, I’ve come to the conclusion that with the world’s leaders struggling to find consensus on how best to protect the planet and tackle climate change, and with the clock ticking, the solution, for now, must be to focus on the micro. In other words, alongside maintaining the pressure on those at the top post-COP26, we can each do our bit as individuals at home. And the good news is that even small steps can make a big difference, especially if they’re part of a collective effort.

28 | livingmagazines.online

Nigel and son Wil adopt a ‘waste not want not’ philosophy with their composter

On that note, and with January just weeks away, I thought I’d share three of my easiest-to-implement New Year’s Revolutions.

Get composting! If you don’t own one already, treat yourself to a compost bin in the January sales. With so much of the rubbish we make coming from our kitchens and gardens, it really is a no-brainer to compost this natural waste. Composting is a natural process that provides useful – and free – fertiliser for the garden. Get the children involved by explaining aspects like the breaking-down process of the mush and what the worms are up to – take it from me, they’ll love it! Your garden will thank you in the future too.

Scooping up empty shower gel and shampoo bottles is one of those annoying tasks that seems to need doing with alarming frequency. Nobody likes watching all those empty bottles stack up, but the good news is that an alternative does exist in the form of refillable options. Simply take your empties to one of our local eco-friendly shops and refill them there. Just think of the money you’re saving by not paying for all that packaging - in other words, refilling is good for both your pocket and the planet.

Chill out! Years ago, the only way to tackle dirt or stubborn stains on clothes was a hot wash – a practice that could result in garments coming out of the machine cleaner but also, unfortunately, sometimes smaller! Thankfully, new technology has come on in leaps and bounds since then, with the result that we can now wash at lower temperatures and still get sparkling results. Cooler washes are also brilliant news for the planet and help to reduce our energy bills, so yet again, a win-win. And that, surely, is what we’d like 2022 to be all about – winning more than we’re losing.

Education

Wallace and Gromit go back to school St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School marked the official opening of its new pre-school recently with a fantastic fundraising effort for Wallace and Gromit’s Grand Appeal for Bristol Children’s Hospital and, to the delight of attendees, an appearance by the characters themselves, along with other guests. Long in the pipeline, the pre-school was the brainchild of local mum and school governor Rachel Mougeot who explained that she spotted the need for additional childcare provision in the town back in 2017. Rachel secured support in the form of funding for the pre-school from North Somerset Council

last year, enabling the pre-school to open in September 2021. The facility was officially opened by the MP for North Somerset Liam Fox, after which several fun fundraising activities took place, including a cake sale, featuring offerings baked that day at school by the children, and a raffle, with prizes kindly donated by local businesses. Attendees included parents and local representatives, including Portishead Town Councillor Janet Davey.

The Grand Appeal is a cause close to the heart of the Mougeot family, since two of their children have been cared for and received treatment at the children’s hospital. St Joseph’s pre-school is run by a qualified teacher, ably supported by several teaching assistants, and still has places available. Health and Beauty

Why are our hospitals under so much pressure? By the Walnut Grove team

The obvious answer is because of Covid-19 patients but it wouldn’t be the right one. Well, not directly… But is it the indirect cause? Frail senior patients are blocking up hospitals more than ever before. This is a complex picture with the challenge that the care sector faces obviously playing a key contributory part. At Walnut Grove, we have been keeping our seniors healthy and mobile for 30 years. This limits frailty, reduces risks of falling and lowers morbidity and mortality – helping to keep people out of hospital. It’s hard to believe that Covid-19 has played a role here, but the pandemic has kept people indoors, kept them away from friends and family, and most crucially, has stopped them going outside and being active in whatever form that takes. It is proven without doubt that exercise/ activity outside of the home – not necessarily outside, but with others – contributes hugely to strength, stability, balance and mental health in all of us, but particularly in our older population. The decline is more noticeable in the older population since they start from a lower point and, as in all things, the older you get the faster things go downhill! What can you do about it? Are you older and feel stuck at home since Covid-19 arrived or do you look out for an older relative or friend? If so, this is for you! Walking for Health Month in November has served as the ideal inspiration to get outside and walk. If you don’t feel confident alone, go with a friend. Take a walking pole or, even better two, to give you extra stability and confidence. Exercising in the fresh air is great for physical and mental health. posture when you walk. By using two poles, you’ll be exercising your arms, too, and encouraging blood to flow through more of your body. We do appreciate that winter is with us once again, so if you don’t want to exercise outside come and join one of our classes. Again, exercising with others is great for confidence, safety and mental health. If Covid-19 is still a concern, rest assured that we are running our classes very carefully with limited numbers, marked out boxes and a range of protocols to keep you and the staff safe. Our classes include physio-led seated Pilates with Tanya, while Sally offers a range of classes for heart and respiratory health and structured exercise for balance, stability and strength. Being fitter and healthier makes you more resilient to all the bumps in the road that come with a longer life. That message, for some reason, isn’t being pushed by the government, but it is clear that staying out of hospital is good for you and the NHS.

If you’re unsure about exercising outside feel free to come and try one of our classes.

We should all be playing our part in that – so with Christmas coming up, promise yourself or a relative/friend the gift of being healthier and happier in 2022 by being more active and getting fitter. We offer gift vouchers, so if someone you know needs a nudge, it could be the perfect gift! Call us on 01275 818303 to book your appointment or find out how we can help. Money Matters

Ten tips for a smooth and amicable divorce Mandy McCabe, partner, Portishead Amy Jones, solicitor associate, Clevedon

6.

Be ready with finances

– dig out bank statements, pay slips and mortgage statements as soon as possible. If you can work together to establish who owns what and who owes what, even better.

7.

Do everything you can to avoid going to court

– it’s impossible to overestimate how stressful – not to mention expensive – this option is.

8. Mandy McCabe (left) and Amy Jones

Divorce doesn’t have to be a battlefield.

If you do go to court

– be aware that a family judge has to take into account various factors specified in law, including the financial needs of both parties and children. One or even both of you might not agree with the judge’s decision.

Be 100% sure that divorce is what you both want

– there’s less likely to be resentment and acrimony going forward if you both agree you’ve given the marriage your all.

2.

Take legal advice as soon as possible

– you can remove a lot of anxiety by finding a family lawyer you feel comfortable with, who will explain your legal rights, responsibilities and what to expect.

3.

Put children first

– you may be splitting up but you’ll always be their parents. Make a pledge not to bad-mouth each other and agree how to best arrange future living arrangements. Parenting agreements can help.

4.

Think about mediation

– if communication between you is difficult, a trained mediator can help resolve difficulties.

5.

Set a budget and timeline

– plan for costs and how you will both meet legal and professional fees, as well as how long the divorce process will take.

Ali Redwood of TaxAssist Accountants I have just sold a property in the UK and am unsure if I have to file a Capital Gains Tax report within 30 or 60 days? Since April 2020, UK residents who had Capital Gains Tax (CGT)to pay on the sale of a UK residential property have had to report this to HM Revenue and Customs within 30 days of completion and pay any tax due as well. But on October 27, 2021, the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak announced in his Autumn Budget that the deadline would be increased from 30 days to 60 days for any properties that complete from that date –October 27, 2021. Any properties for which the sale was completed before October 27, 2021 will still need to be reported within 30 days to HMRC.

With Resolution’s Good Divorce Week recently marked in the week ending December 3, Wards Family Solicitors Mandy McCabe and Amy Jones give some practical advice.

1.

Do I have to file my Capital Gains Tax report in 30 or 60 days?

9.

There are also specific rules for non-UK residents disposing of UK land, although the 30-day extension will also apply to any of these disposals where completion is on or after October 27, 2021.

Talk positively

– if you can, continuing to share your feelings and hopes for the future will make a huge difference going forward.

10.

Look after yourself

– remember that divorce is tough and that caring for your physical and emotional wellbeing is important. If you’re struggling, ask your doctor about professional help from a counsellor. Need advice? Money Matters

Self-Assessment Deadline Looms Leon Savage, Practice manager at Drury & Co. The deadline for filing the 2020/21 self-assessment tax return is fast approaching. Returns must be filed online by midnight on January 31, 2022 to avoid a late filing penalty. Any tax owed must also be paid to HMRC by January 31, 2022. Please note, where the filing deadline is missed, an automatic penalty of £100 is charged, regardless of whether the taxpayer has any tax to pay. Further penalties will accrue until the Return is filed. Failure to file or late filing may lead to HMRC opening an enquiry into your affairs. Where a notice to file a return was not filed until after October 31, 2021, a later deadline applied, which is three months from the date of the notice. Paper returns filed after October 31, 2021 (or three months from the date of the

notice to file if this is later) attract a late filing penalty of £100. However, if the paper filing deadline was missed, no penalty is charged if the return is filed online by January 31, 2022. If you were in receipt of any SelfEmployed Income Support Scheme (SEISS) Grants, Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) Grants or Council Grants, don’t forget these grants are taxable and should be declared when completing your Self-employed pages on your Self-assessment tax return.

Get on top of your tax return this January.

If you are struggling to complete your 2020/21 Tax Return or require help with declaring any grants received, please contact us on 01275 852255 or email me at leon@ardury.co.uk.

Following the death, it is the probate office that gives a grant of probate to those who are entitled, under the will of the deceased, to be executors. If there is no will, the probate office gives the grant under the rules of intestacy. Therefore, planning point one. Ensure that you have a will and that it is kept up to date. This isn’t just about where your belongings end up. It clarifies who you want to deal with your estate. The grant of probate allows the named person to instruct those who hold the assets of the estate. This might be banks, investment brokers or, if there is property to be transferred, solicitors. Of course, if many different organisations hold the assets following the death, this can be extremely time-consuming.

From the team at Richardson’s Wills

In a busy time of year, it is important for everyone, including Father Christmas, to

Probate. It’s a word most people have heard of but I suspect few have deep understanding of, especially when it comes to putting theory into practice.

Probate is confirmation of who is entitled to administer the estate of someone who has died.

It’s Christmas Eve and Father Christmas is busy loading up his sleigh with presents ready to deliver them to us all with the help of his trusted elves and reindeer.

Well prepared for the unlikely event of being stuck in the chimney was a great present to Mrs Claus as she used the LPA to obtain some money from Father Christmas’s bank account to hire another sleigh, fly out to the chimney where Father Christmas was stuck, pick up the presents and safely deliver them to everyone in time for Christmas.

By Geoff Speirs, director, Haines Watts

So we thought it would be helpful to offer some insights gathered from dealing with probate matters, and how we can make life easier for those left to administer someone’s estate.

An alternative Christmas tale with a message

During the delivery, Father Christmas slipped on the icy roof and got stuck down a chimney. Luckily, the elves were on hand and phoned Mrs Claus who breathed a sigh of relief because they had completed their Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) as their New Year’s Resolution.

The importance of forward planning

Whoops! Santa’s stuck in the chimney.

think about putting in place a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). So do not do what Father Christmas did and get stuck - take the time this Christmas to speak to your loved ones, family and friends to make an LPA for your future. It’s never too soon to complete these valuable documents but sadly it can be too late. We are offering a 20% discount on our already competitive prices for all appointments made before the New Year. For more information and to make an appointment call 01275 851056 or email nicola@richardsonswills.co.uk

So, planning point two. Where possible, hold your assets jointly with those whom you want to benefit when you die. These assets will still be subject to Inheritance Tax (IHT) but they will pass automatically to the surviving joint holder. No grant of probate is needed. And the banks or brokers will transfer the assets automatically, on the production of a death certificate. One common challenge for a person in dealing with an estate is to ensure that all the assets are properly identified. Planning point three, therefore, is to make a list of all relevant bank accounts, investments, properties, life policies and so on. It is sensible to give this to the executor named in the will or, at least, let them know where the pertinent details are kept.
