irst of all, congratulations to the organisers of Portishead carnival and to everyone who supported it in any way. What a fantastic event!

Portishead should be very proud.

This month of course we have the Portishead Raft Race, Festival on the Quay and the Flower Show and Country Fair to look forward to, along with many school fairs and if you are very lucky a summer holiday too.

This month’s magazine is full of things to do and places to go, summer offers and seasonal tips.

ell, a huge thank you to all those who helped Portishead Carnival 2014 happen – especially Jemma and Wendy. So much hard work went in to what turned out to be a fantastic day.

The streets were lined with people, the procession was varied and interesting and the field was packed with carnival goers who enjoyed everything from fun fair rides to live music. There were lots of charity stalls and local groups interacting with the community and plenty of good food and drink.

The bars and cafes in Portishead High Street must have had a very profitable day too, as they were bursting at the seams, so not only does this event provide a family fun day for all, but a boost for the local economy too.

Volunteer receives award from the man whose life he saved

P

ortishead Lifeboat crew member James Hart has been given a Resuscitation Award by the Royal Humane Society after saving the life of Chris Mead.

A surprise meeting was set up at the lifeboat boathouse in Portishead so that Chris could present James with his award. It was an emotional moment as Chris arrived with his close family to meet James for the first time since they met under very different circumstances.

In June 2013 Chris, aged 61, and a keen cyclist, was cycling to his home in Portishead from a charity bike ride he had just completed in Bristol when he suffered a heart attack on Avon Way. Volunteer crew member,

James was with his family, also on their way home, when he saw there was a problem in the road ahead.

He rushed to the scene and began the lifesaving CPR which, according to the paramedics who arrived on scene, along with Chris’ fitness, undoubtedly, saved his life.

James had just completed the RNLI First Aid Casualty Care Course which is part of the adoption process for the Portishead Lifeboat, he has also completed lots of first aid training courses with the volunteers on the Portishead and Bristol Lifeboat.

Ian Lazenby, head of training, said: “A core focus is on our first aid and airways management. We are all incredibly proud of James, this goes to show that understanding the fundamentals of first aid, really does help save lives.”

Chris said, “It doesn’t matter what training a person has in order to save a life, it’s the decision they make if and when that time comes. They can choose to sit and remain an observer or they can act and respond, putting their training to good use. It’s a split second decision and one that can mean, as in my case, life or death. It’s

because James made the decision to get involved and not be an observer that I am here today. Thank you James.”

Open Gardens Success

P

ortishead in Bloom enjoyed another successful Open Gardens weekend this year.

15 private gardens were open to the public with hundreds of visitors passing through them over the two days in between a few heavy showers.

Raffles, cream teas and exhibitions were included in some of the gardens to raise funds

for Portishead in Bloom and a variety of individual charities.

The proceeds from the Open Gardens programmes all went to Portishead in Bloom, a group of volunteers who work 12 months of the year to keep Portishead looking its best with public flower beds, gardens and tubs carefully tended.

Portishead is not only in the South West in Bloom competition, which is judged this month, but has this year also been nominated for the Britain in Bloom national contest.

Cashing in on Sunshine

B

ristol and North Somerset residents and investors will begin reaping the benefits of the power of the sun over the next few months. Low Carbon Gordano (LCG) - a community enterprise – is behind plans to build a 1.8 Megawatt solar array on the edge of the Avonmouth industrial complex.

In order to help pay for the 8,000 panels LCG will be launching a share issue with the aim of raising £2.2 million. It’s a scheme which is expected to attract not only ethical investors who want their money spent on local, low carbon projects but anyone who wants a reasonable rate of return on their investment in a difficult economic climate.

Chair of Portishead based LCG, Jon Gething, said: “We are really excited to be involved in this scheme which, when built, will generate enough clean energy to power 500 homes. Involvement in local renewable energy projects will make a significant contribution towards accomplishing our vision of a sustainable future.

“We are a Community Benefit Society so not only will we give a fair return to

our investors but surplus profits will be channeled in to an Environment Fund for local low carbon projects.”

To construct the scheme, which will be built on land sandwiched between the M4, M49 and the railway line to Avonmouth, LCG have partnered with Bath and West Community Energy (BCWE), an award winning community energy company.

Jeff Kenna, managing director of BWCE, said: “This is a great opportunity for local people to invest in a solar energy project and make a real contribution to tackling climate change.”

A launch of the share offer took place on June 18 at the Folk Hall in Portishead High Street. The offer will close on August 15 and investors are encouraged to make early applications. The share offer is open to everyone over 16, though in the event

of it being oversubscribed preference will be given to local residents. Shares are £10 each and the minimum purchase is £500 and the maximum £100,000 in shares.

LCG is projected to provide investors with returns of around 7%, plus tax relief for qualifying investors. It will also set up an Environment Fund to support local projects For more information about the share offer or to obtain an investors’ pack, go to www. lowcarbongordano.

Film featured at poetry festival

A

short film about the River Dart directed by a Portishead resident has been screened at the Wenlock Poetry Festival. The river has inspired a number of paintings, books and poems in the past and talented film director Paul Gainey’s 20 minute film shows all of its charm.

Paul, a media relations manager for the Environment Agency, has previously made television documentaries including productions for Channel 4 and has based the film on an award-winning, dream-like, poem called Dart by poet Alice Oswald.

The Dartmoor National Park Authority is now looking to set-up a special screening of the film.

Another of Oswald’s works, A Sleepwalk on the Severn, is inspired by the Severn at night and Paul is hoping to make a film of that if Alice will allow him.

Flags mark the arrival of summer in Portishead

M

embers of Portishead Christmas Lights committee joined forces with Portishead in Bloom to mark the arrival of summer.

Using their experience of working from heights, they helped hang flags throughout the High Street, an annual event that always takes place ahead of the town’s Open Gardens weekend and Portishead carnival.

New flags were used this year, all of which have been designed by Portishead school

children. The flags were made by Friends of Portishead in Bloom, all of whom are volunteers, led by Judith Burrill.

Italian evening for Girl Guides

T

he older members of 3rd Redcliffe Bay Guides had great fun teaching the guides to make pizza from scratch for an Italian evening organised as part of their Baden Powell challenge.

Guide leader Liz Howells said: “The five girls, aged 13-14, led the whole evening and left us leaders with nothing to do, as they cooked, held a quiz and taught the girls origami using the colours of the Italian flag. I was especially happy when I was given a gluten-free pizza, my first for a year, it tasted superb!”

Activity at the new lifeboat site

S

ince the last build bulletin there has been plenty going on at the site of the new RNLI lifeboat station in Pier Road, Portishead, although not all is visible progress. Work on the foundations for the lifeboat station has advanced, with some concrete having been poured and the drilling completed for the piled section of the boathouse.

Work has started on the ground source heating system. One of the photos shows the drilling machine which is boring two 100 metre deep holes for the pipes which will provide a source of heat for the under floor heating. This type of system is ecologically friendly and requires little maintenance in the long term.

Work on the beach has progressed with the concrete foundation rings. You may have seen the piling machine on the beach which has

been drilling four holes in each of the concrete rings (also pictured) ready for the piles to be inserted. These piles will support the 60 metre long launch ramp.

Adam Littlejohn, RNLI’s shore works divisional manager for the South West is delighted that work on the new lifeboat station is proceeding well. He said: “Work on the foundations of the new lifeboat station is a significant step forward and a very exciting one. Although not visibly obvious, we will now start to see the building itself start to grow up out of them and begin to take shape. ‘‘Working around the tide is not easy and takes enormous organisation. Unfortunately it sometimes means that building work starts very early in the morning or at awkward times for local residents. The contractors Andrew Scott have tried to keep this to a minimum as much as possible but we are very grateful for the patience of those in the surrounding buildings.”

The RNLI is building the new lifeboat station ahead of a formal adoption of The Portishead Lifeboat Trust when the station is built, according to the wishes of the charity’s Trustees who agreed that an adoption would take place once the RNLI had provided a new home that was fit for purpose.

Pupils Start Construction Of New Sainsbury’s Store

P

upils from High Down Junior School, supported by the chairman of Portishead Town Council, Councillor Don Cameron, helped get the construction of Sainsbury’s new Portishead store underway.

The students performed the turf cutting ceremony at the site on Serbert Way and buried a time capsule with their predictions of what the future will look like.

Michelle Box, Sainsbury’s Project Manager, said: “I am so pleased that Councillor Cameron and High Down Junior School could cut the turf and

The new store will include a café and petrol station and create around 270 full and part time job opportunities. Recruitment is expected to start in the next month or two.

Route 88 restores bus service to residents left out on a limb

vital new bus link between Portishead and Clevedon is now in operation.

Local bus and coach operator Carmel Coaches is running the new bus service ‘Route 88’ on Mondays to Fridays. As well as serving the shops and businesses in Clevedon and Portishead town centres, the service will also operate via the residential areas of North Weston, Redcliffe Bay and Walton Bay along with some of the streets like South Road, where a service had previously been cut.

Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, North Somerset Council’s deputy leader and executive member responsible for transport, said: “We are pleased to be working with Carmel Coaches to introduce the new ‘Route 88’ bus, which will provide an essential service for the communities in and around the towns of Clevedon and Portishead. This service has been introduced following requests from local residents, particularly in the coast road area, and will depend on their support to be sustainable long-term. In the meantime it is being financially supported by the council following agreement with the local ward councillors.”

Fun day raises money for cancer support

A

charity fun day at the Albion pub in Bristol Road, Portishead, raised more than £1,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

A trolley push through Portishead High Street got the day off to a great start raising hundreds of pounds to start the ball rolling.

Bar games and a raffle followed. Next customers dug deep in to their pockets, bidding to persuade the landlord to have his chest waxed and then punters offered money to do the waxing themselves!

The finale to the fundraising day came in the form of live music from Dark Horses.

The event was organised by Albion staff member Sara Brooks, chairman of the group Every Second Counts.

Sara said: “We are still counting the money up but it looks like we will reach around £1,500 for Macmillan Cancer Support. I would like to thank every single person who supported us.”

Do You Speak Autism?

Portishead mum of two Holly Gaunt has launched a blog entitled Do You Speak Autism? www.doyouspeakautism.wordpress.com Holly and her husband Matt have two lovely children James and Sam. James is four and is on the autism spectrum, Sam is two, he is not. Holly decided to document the day to day life of an autism parent, in the hope that it would give people more understanding, she has also discovered it has helped many parents in similar situations feel they are not alone.

S

ince having children, I have become an expert in speed-shopping. In fact, unless I’m desperate, I try to avoid it altogether. But today was an emergency: we had run out of milk, and more importantly, we had run out of chocolate.

I had no choice but to run the gauntlet, keeping everything crossed that James would co-operate.

Unfortunately, about ten feet inside the store James decided he’d had enough of holding my hand and before I could stop him, he had bolted around a corner and out of sight.

After trailing the aisles for several minutes in a panic, I eventually located him in the packed café. I summoned my strength and managed to hoist him up over my shoulder whilst he screamed and smacked me in the face. For a four-year-old he packs a

surprisingly hard punch, but I forced myself to grit my teeth and ignore his violent protest, experience having taught me that reacting would only egg him on.

At the checkout, I had to abandon my shopping several times to chase him as he tore off down the aisles, responding with a tight smile to the commentary of the checkout lady: “He’s a livewire, isn’t he?” I could feel about a hundred pairs of eyes on me, and I knew exactly what they were all thinking.

And therein lies the ‘problem’ with James. People don’t realise that he has autism, because he looks ‘normal’so he is judged by normal standards . To other people, James is just naughty, and needs a firm hand, which clearly I’m not giving him.

For James, the supermarket is an overwhelming myriad of bright lights, colours and noises forming a general din that makes him anxious and hyper.

And because social norms mean very little to him, tearing through a crowded supermarket and throwing himself in the path of oncoming trolleys is not something he

perceives as a problem.

James also lacks the necessary awareness of danger to prevent him from running off without a backward glance when something captures his interest. He isn’t being belligerent or ‘testing the boundaries’- that requires at least a very basic understanding of other people and their expectations.

Like our shopping trip, trips to playgroups, soft play centres, children’s parties… simple experiences that most parents take for granted are decidedly difficult for us.

The common theme? Well- it’s other people - the staring, the whispered comments. I could grow a thicker skin, but that’s easier said than done.

The truth is that all of us, myself included, have at some point been guilty of judging a situation without knowing the facts. I hope that, by explaining autism from a parents’ perspective, I am helping to break the taboo around this misunderstood condition. If you have read this and learned something new, then I’m one step closer to achieving that.

heepway Meats, the farm shop on the outskirts of Portishead, is training up a new member of the team.

Owner Jo Crossman says: “Due to an increase in trade, in true family run business style, we are training up my brother James to join the team.”

James is not the only new addition to the popular butcher’s shop.

They have recently introduced a selection of West Country cheeses including Somerset brie and camembert, stilton and mature Cheddar. Award winning Chunk pies should become a firm favourite too, with a delicious selection of flavours including steak and kidney, steak and Otter Ale, chicken, bacon and leek, pork pies and pasties. Also added to the quality food available are ready sliced cooked meats, pates and olives.

Jo adds: “These new ranges are introduced alongside our traditional firm favourites and as the BBQ season approaches we will have our wide selection of homemade sausages, burgers, kebabs and glazed meats available. However, if you still prefer your Sunday roast, all joints are still available.”

housands of people are expected to flock to Portishead’s Lake Grounds on Sunday July 6 for the town’s annual raft race and village fete.

There will be fun for all the family with bouncy castles, rides, stalls, sideshows, live music and local charity stands. Why not take along a picnic and make a day of it?

The raft race will take a similar format to previous years. There will be a number of qualifying races around the lake and winners of each heat will go through to the grand final.

As well as prizes for the winning rafts, there will be awards for the best dressed

Race vessel, best designed and for the most sponsorship raised.

Alternatively, why not enter your own Edible Boat in the 2014 regatta? All you have to do is make a bite sized boat out of anything edible... and you could win a prize! It’s great fun for all ages, but especially for those who want to join in but are too young to enter a raft.

hildren from 17 North Somerset primary schools took part in the annual Music Association of Woodspring Schools (MAWS) concert at Bristol’s Colston Hall.

Around 600 performers sang, danced and played music from films and musicals to a packed auditorium.

The event, organised by the North Somerset Music Service, was a great example of schools across the region joining forces and pooling talents.

It was the 39th annual concert of its kind and many parents in the audience say they remember taking part in the event when they were children!

This is five weeks packed full of activities and outings for children aged eight and over. Running Monday to Friday from July 28 to August 29 between 8.30am-5.30pm, there will be a full programme of sports, arts, crafts, cooking and games. In addition for those who want to go further afield there are trips to Weston beach, Bristol Balloon Fiesta, Leigh Woods, Blaise Castle and Bristol M Shed. Rock Project concert

T

he Rock Project is hosting its annual end of year gig on Sunday, July 6 at the Princes Hall, Princes Road, Clevedon.

The event begins at 4pm starting with the 7-11 year old students rocking out to songs by AC/DC, The Beatles, One Republic, The White Stripes, Imagine Dragons, Elvis and Bon Jovi amongst others.

In the second half, which kicks off at 6pm, the 12-18 year old senior students will be performing tracks by Foo Fighters, Green Day, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Alice Cooper, Arctic Monkeys and Kaiser Chiefs and many more.

Andy Collins, who runs The Rock Project in North Somerset, said: “This year we have around 100 students from Nailsea, Clevedon and Portishead performing on stage so it will be our biggest gig yet. All our students have been working hard to learn their sets and we have a lot of very talented young people performing.”

With a licensed bar for the adults, a food van, an electric guitar to win in the charity raffle and a lot of live music, this year’s gig will be a great way to spend few hours with family and friends.

Cooking pays off for youngsters

A

cookery course for members of Portishead Youth Club ended with the youngsters cooking a three course meal for the youth centre’s trustees. Onion soup, stuffed chicken and chocolate pudding went down a treat with the special guests who all agreed the cookery course was a worthwhile project for the club and its members. Course participants ranged from age 11 to 17 years of age.

The course was funded by the Portishead Local Commissioning Network which is responsible for allocating funds for youth projects in the community.

Youth Netball

ortishead Pirates Netball club is pleased to be launching a new junior section, open to girls in school years 7, 8 and 9 (in September 2014).

The netball club, which has been running for almost five years and currently has two adult teams in the Weston League, is running the new youth team with two volunteers who have experience in sports coaching. Adult players from the Pirates will also be offering their coaching skills on a voluntary basis.

The junior club will run on Tuesday evenings from 7pm to 8pm at Gordano school outdoor courts initially for a 10 week pilot to assess its success.

If the junior section takes off as envisaged and with help from the children’s parents, Portishead Pirates are looking to establish themselves long term and to play indoor in the new school sports facility at Gordano.

What’s On The Dig For Victory Show WW2 – a Sherman Tank.

For the music lovers, there is a line up to be proud of including Sticky Toffee Jazz, Ricky Hunter, The Lunettes, Jayne Darling and DJUXB. For those with stamina you can Lindyhop and Swing Dance late into the night on the Saturday at The Victory Dance for only £10 a ticket.

Activities for children include a museum of artefacts, traditional games and a children’s trail – a ration of sweets is waiting for anyone who completes it.

You can even pick up your own bit of history from one of the many vintage stalls and get involved with ‘upcycling’ 1940s style in one of the make do and mend workshops.

Chocks away as West’s top model flyers salute 25th anniversary

W

oodspring Wings Model Flying Club celebrates its 25th anniversary with a bumper aerial

display at its Yatton airbase this month.

One of the most eagerly anticipated events in the model aircraft flying calendar, the Woodspring Wings 2014 show takes place at the Claverham Drove airfield near Yatton over the weekend of July 5 and 6 and is expected to bring flyers and model fans from all over the South West.

Organised by model flying veteran Bruce McKay, the flying displays feature some of the best pilots and models in the UK including Steve Holland.

Some of the biggest and best models the UK has to offer will be there, with everything from First World War biplanes

to modern jets. Also featured will be exciting high-altitude rocket displays and perennial children’s favourite the ‘Toffee Bomber’.

Pilots from the Large Model Association will display a selection of large Second World War Warbirds on various flying slots including two Lancasters and a sprinkling of Spitfires.

Woodspring Wings MAC is one of the few model-flying clubs in the UK to own its own site.

enterprise supporting local artists, and is now reaching out to a younger audience, offering them the chance to become part of a creative community. The competition and exhibition has been organised to celebrate its first anniversary.

The theme of the competition is “North Somerset”, and it is open to those aged seven-18 with 10 categories across three age groups, with a prize winner in each category.

All the works will be included in a three week exhibition which will be open to the public and press from Saturday, August 16-Saturday, September 6 in The Blue Room and other venues in Nailsea.

The winners in each category will also be

included in The Blue Room’s professional exhibition in late September for the Made in North Somerset festival.

he West of England councils are working together on proposals which will deliver investment of up to £100 million in improvements to our local rail network, over the next five to ten years.

The proposals, called MetroWest, are a series of projects, including large to small scale enhancements to our local rail network.

Phase 1 MetroWest Phase 1 includes the reopening of the Portishead to Bristol line to passenger train services.

Since the MetroWest Phase 1 project began in 2013 substantial work has been carried out to identify and assess options for the location of Portishead railway station.

This work has been informed by feedback from consultation carried out in spring 2013. The Office of Rail Regulation has said a level crossing at Quays Avenue will not be allowed which has to be taken in to account when deciding where our railway station will be sited.

Six potential station sites have been identified, three of which were included in the 2013 consultation.

Assessments have shown three options are potentially viable and three are not and so the public are now being consulted on their views of the three sites which are now options.

The options being tabled are: East of Quays Avenue, over the end of Quays Avenue near to Haven View and a site between Harbour Road and Serbert Way.

Portishead Gymnasts Represent South West England

T

he South West of England Grades teams had nine Portishead Gym Academy representatives in the National Grade finals in Birmingham earlier in the year.

The Academy’s first representative was nineyear-old Becca Ballam who was selected as the reserve in the compulsory grade four team, gaining some valuable experience from the competition.

In the club grade finals, grade eight was the first to take to the floor. Katie Jones was selected as reserve, while Eden Bryant and Phoebe Jakubczyk were in action. In the apparatus rankings, Phoebe placed 3rd on vault, 5th on bars and Eden placed 8th on beam. Individually out of a huge 52 entries, Phoebe placed 12th and Eden 17th. The team brought home the bronze medal.

The next Championship title up for grabs was the grade six section, where Academy gymnast Sophie Simpkins had an excellent competition to place

2nd on bars and 9th on beam, and 7th all around. The team placed 4th.

In grade seven Amelia Knight, Zoe Simmons and Talesha Stylianou had a solid performance and were rewarded with individual medals. Talesha top scored on vault with Amelia ranking 6th, Zoe top scored bars, with Amelia in 3rd, Amelia placed 2nd on beam, and Zoe placed 9th on floor. With these near perfect performances Talesha placed 12th, Amelia took the silver all around medal and Zoe the bronze, and the team took the title.

In the grade five Ellie Haberfield placed 3rd on vault and 7th on bars.

Ellie’s team bonded together perfectly to take the championship team title.

Maverick Arm Training for Top Guns

By Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym Professor Every month top personal trainer Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym Professor, provides advice for those who workout. This month he talks us through maverick arm training.

repetitive stress injuries, such as golfers elbow or tennis elbow, and greater tax different muscles/ muscle heads.

In terms of actual size, a well-developed arm can be somewhat of an illusion. Consider a man wearing short sleeves on such arms; what’s on show are a lean strong pair of forearms (flexors and extensors), leading to a prominent Brachioradialis and Anconeus flash, and the lower reaches of the Brachialis and medial and lateral head of the Triceps (sometimes even showing the long head of the triceps, depending on sleeve length).

Pop a vest on, a developed short head to the Biceps will look very underwhelming without equal development of the long head of the Biceps, the supporting Brachialis, and the opposing Triceps muscles.

Simply performing your favourite EZ Bar curls forever more will not achieve

Posing the question “What’s your favourite and/ or best exercise for arms?” the answers are varied. Some people choose the exercises they feel are considered the “best” all round arm exercises, while others conform to what they believe is said to be “the done thing” for arm exercises..

From the more experienced trainers, the answers are more varied, with many stating what exercises they felt had the best “feel” (for them) in terms of comfort and muscle stimulus. Often, I believe that having a “favourite” movement can hinder our development – decreasing variety and increasing the likelihood of repetitive stresses.

That’s not to say “perform exercises that are uncomfortable” – we don’t want to aggravate a pre-existing injury; it simply means regularly changing the angles at which we work around a joint to avoid

the optimal appearance of working all of the aforementioned muscle bellies; it is achieved through a greater variety of extension and flexion exercises around the wrist and elbow joint.

So, buck the trend, be a bit nonconformist, be more intuitive and individual with your training, and start adding variety to your arm training to achieve top guns.

Daredevils Sought For Charity Skydive

T

hrill seekers are being sought to jump into action for a fundraising skydive to help Mezze @ White Lion in Portishead High Street and its sister restaurants raise funds for their nominated charity.

Mezze is supporting The Friends of Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre’s £2 Million Linac Machine Radiotherapy Appeal.

The new Linac machine boasts the latest technological advances to treat virtually every shape and size of tumour using thousands of separate radiation beams.

To help get fundraising off to a flying start, Mezze is looking for brave souls to undertake parachute jumps from 10,000 feet or an exhilarating solo (static line) jump from up to 3,000 feet.

Teams of between six and 10 can jump at any one time, with the nearest approved airfields at Honiton, Swindon or Salisbury, where Mezze will be booking slots to meet demand.

No experience is necessary as full training is given.

Mezze Director, Alex Tryfonos, said: “One in three of us will get cancer and for most it will be the toughest thing we ever face.

“The Linac machine will equip the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre with the very latest tool to target tumours with millimetre accuracy.

“Mezze Restaurants is therefore delighted to be staging Mezze team skydives, which we hope will raise thousands of pounds towards the appeal.”

Run for the future is back T he annual Run for the Future will take place once again on Bristol’s Downs this year, helping to save the lives of Bristol men.

The 5k family fun run, organised by Bristol Rotarians, is being backed by TV personality Noel Edmonds and will raise much needed funds for the Bristol Urological Institute Prostate Cancer Appeal based at Southmead Hospital when it takes place on Sunday, September 14.

Since the first run nine years ago more than £250,000 has been raised to support the

research and treatment of prostate cancer in Bristol.

The event is open to all ages and abilities and participants can either walk, run or jog around the course. There will also be stalls and local bands playing before the run to provide entertainment and refreshments and families and supporters will be able to join in and cheer on their runners, while enjoying the great atmosphere.

Make new friends

A

coffee morning with a difference runs on Tuesday mornings at the Folk Hall in Portishead High Street from 9.30-11am.

The social gathering started off as a country dancing class run by musician Jill Elliot. She said: “We had a lot of fun teaching country dancing but then most people say they come for the fun and friendship rather than the country dancing.

So now, taking that in to account we have a coffee morning which costs £2 per person with live music and dancing as an optional extra. Because it takes place in the daytime it attracts largely older people and we have an absolute ball. Even people who come along on their own never feel out of place, it’s a great atmosphere and a brilliant way to make new friends.”

The Folk Hall is easily accessible for people with mobility problems so it really is an all inclusive get together.

uring Alzheimer’s Awareness Week, Highly Strung community band played for two hours outside Portishead library and two hours outside Boots in Portishead High Street, raising nearly £90 for Alzheimer’s charity.

Meanwhile Dementia Action set up an informative stall inside Portishead Library with support workers offering leaflets and answering questions.

Don’t forget the Memory Café run

by Portishead Rotary Club operates at the Jubilee Centre in Slade Road every first and third Tuesday of the month from 2.15pm - 3.45pm.

The aim is to provide a setting for sufferers with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease and their carers, where for a couple of hours they can enjoy the company of others with similar problems, have a cup of tea or coffee, take part in quizzes, play games, listen to visiting speakers, and sing-along to popular songs of days gone by.

The sound of laughter is an important part of the proceedings, the sessions help to relax suffers and carers alike.

New members are always welcome. There is no charge for anyone going to the sessions.

he first Portishead Flower Show was held in 1863 and is still a major event in the Portishead calendar. It has continued to adapt to reflect changing times and the accent today is very much on activities for children and young people and for promoting local country life, nature and the environment as well as being an outlet for local talent. Portishead Flower Show –be inspired

with the average cost of each show exceeding £22,000. Not only is it expensive, but it is entirely dependent upon volunteers doing all of the organisation and manual work. The marquees cover an area as big as a supermarket (24,000 square feet), which have to be set up, run and disassembled all within one week. The committee could not run the show without the assistance of the volunteers and they are extremely grateful for their help.

It’s been a traumatic month at the Rowsell’s. My babies are leaving home and it’s particularly tough for the one who’s loved and nurtured them. No I’m not a lucky parent, though we live in hope, it’s the veggies that have moved out to take up residence at Gerties allotment!

It really is like raising a family. You plant the seed, water and feed them, watch them grow. You keep them warm, protect them and each night bed them down. You talk to them (don’t laugh), tell them off and are immensely proud when they do well.

And as they approach the big day you start hardening them up and get them ready for staying out all night. And then they are gone but still need regular support and a helping hand (although to be fair the veggies haven’t yet asked me to do any washing and ironing).

That first week really was one of disturbed sleep and worry (not joking honestly). Was it too cold, was there frost expected, had putting them out before the end of May been a mistake, could they survive in that wind? I dragged Andy

CIS tax refund for companies

Q:

I own a small company in construction and some of our customers have been deducting CIS tax from our payments. How do I go about reclaiming this?

When a contractor pays your company “under deduction” (i.e. net of tax) for work, it must give your company a statement showing the full amount of the payment and the deduction that it has made from that payment.

You will need to enter these on your company’s Employer Payment Summary (EPS) returns. The CIS deductions you have suffered will then be offset against the company’s PAYE liabilities for the year to date.

repayment of these until: • The final Full Payment Submission (FPS) for the year has been submitted (due by 19 April each year where payments to employees are made in the period 6 March to 5 April).

• The tax year in which the CIS deductions were made from the company has ended.

Please note, you should not attempt to claim any CIS credits on the company’s Corporation Tax return as you may incur a penalty.
