ith spring well and truly sprung and the Easter holidays upon us, April is a great time to get out and about. Whether it’s in the garden, attending events and activities in the town or travelling further afield, this month’s Gordano Living is packed with inspiration.

The Easter Trail organised by Tanya Marriott at Solelution, the family footwear shop in Portishead High Street, is open to everyone and has some terrific prizes, whilst raising money for good causes. Election fever is building, as not only the local towns and villages, but the whole

country, prepares for the May elections.

Next month Gordano Living will take a look at the local elections taking place and hopes to talk to Portishead Town Council about the changes ahead. Meanwhile keep a note in your diary to vote on May 7.

Official opening for cadet centre

T

he new cadet centre in Portishead’s Station Road has been officially opened.

Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, Lady Elizabeth Gass, officially opened the centre, which has been named after Portishead war hero, Squadron Leader Tommy Broom.

The new, single storey facility was built by the Wessex Reserve Forces and Cadets Association (WRFCA) at a cost of £420,000. on the site of the former HQ which was demolished in 2012, The new unit provides an additional 61 square metres of space for activities and the layout has been designed to meet the modern day needs of both user groups, Portishead Army Cadets and the Air

Training Corps(ATC).

It includes classrooms, stores, a training hall, toilets, kitchen and offices.

Tommy Broom’s daughter Mary-Ann Iles attended the official opening of the centre, along with her husband Greg and sons James and Robert (pictured). Tommy’s friend since the 1950s, Tom Evans, who wrote a book about the veteran, was also among the guests.

Tommy Broom was born in Portishead in January 1914. He joined the Royal Air Force at the age of 18 and was promoted to sergeant in 1939.He was involved in 83 sorties and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross three times. On one mission his plane crashed at 250mph after hitting a pylon at 80ft in Nazi-occupied Belgium. He and his pilot were knocked out, but the French Resistance found them and they managed to dodge the Nazis. They used false papers to complete the 1,500-mile journey through France and Spain, to return home via Gibraltar. It was Tommy’s 25th

operation, after which he became a Squadron Leader.

The book Squadron Leader Tommy Broom DFC by Tom Evans, is published by Pen and Sword.

During the opening ceremony cadets at the centre demonstrated some of their skills which included air rifle shooting, flight simulation and field radio communications.

The event was the last for 2494 Squadron Officer Commanding Flt Lt Martyn Beynon who is retiring after 10 years sterling service. A Question of Sport

n evening with local sporting greats, is guaranteed to raise a smile as well as much needed funds for Bristol city hospitals.

Following the format of the popular TV quiz show, the Portishead Question of Sport will be held at Gordano School, in Portishead’s St Mary’s Road, on Saturday March 28.

The event has been organised by Portishead couple David Prout and Cressida Slater, who will be cycling from Bristol to Paris in May, to raise funds to provide a cystic fibrosis treatment room in Bristol.

The charity evening will help the couple in their fundraising efforts and to meet their target of £3000.

World champion speed windsurfer and locally based osteopath Zara Davies will be taking part in the event, along with a number of other local sporting heroes.

Doors and the bar open at 7pm with the the quiz kicking off around 8pm. There will be a charity auction in the interval. Tickets will be available at £10 in advance, or corporate hospitality packages can be booked for tables of eight or more.

Collections for Marie Curie

ortishead Rotary Club members, partners, friends and Marie Curie volunteers spent a weekend collecting donations in Portishead High Street and at Lidl and Waitrose to raise money for the cancer care charity.

Over the two days £2,288 was collected.

A Rotary spokesman said: “Our thanks go to the generosity of the people of Portishead and to the managers of Waitrose and Lidl for allowing us to collect on their premises.”

he Portishead Annual Town Meeting will take place at the Folk Hall in Portishead High Street on Wednesday May13 at 7.30pm.

Every English town and parish must hold an annual meeting by law. This needs to take place between March 1 and June 1. It is NOT a council meeting, but a meeting of registered electors, it should however be chaired by the chairman of the town council or the vice chairman. In their absence a chairman will be elected.

The meeting is an opportunity for members of the local community to discuss town affairs. Electors can make suggestions and comment on issues within the town, they may also ask councillors present and other community group leaders, questions.

The Annual Town Meeting usually lasts for a couple of hours. Any elector can speak and they do not need to make a prior appointment to do so. They can just turn up and take a turn to speak.

Councillors do not have to attend the meetings but as electors themselves they usually do. The meeting is a chance for

Crime Drop-in Session

A

n anti-social behaviour crime drop-in session takes place on Thursday April 23 at Portishead Library in Horatio House, Harbour Road between 11am and midday.

Members of the community are welcome to go along and talk in a safe environment, with representatives of the police and victim support, about any issues and experiences relating to anti-social behaviour.

PORTISHEAD ANNUAL TOWN MEETING them to say what they have been doing in the community over the past year.

The councillors will usually take note of issues raised at the town meeting and add them to a future council meeting agenda where appropriate.

Minutes of the meeting will be taken by the town clerk or a deputy and a press table will be set out for any members of the press that attend.

In Portishead it is quite usual for the Annual Town Meeting to be followed by the town council AGM but this will not be the case this year due to the likely changes to the council following the elections.

udding writers from Gordano School have been awarded prizes at this year’s Rotary Club Young Writers competition. Six students from the Portishead school were awarded certificates at the presentation ceremony which took place on Wednesday February 11.

Portishead Rotary Club’s President, John Bridgwater, along with his wife Diane and Rotarian Jim Christopherson had the enjoyable job of judging the winners.

John started proceedings by explaining to the winners why he feels writing is so important, and a skill worth developing, as it is an essential tool to communicate ideas and concepts effectively.

The competition asked for 500 words written around the topic of ‘light up the community’.

The writing style and quality of all the submitted work was very high, and the judges spent a whole day on their deliberations.

The winner was Flora Evans, and the following students received honourable mentions: Elin Battista, Katie Ford, Jenna Mair, Natalie Major and Rosa Matthews.

Now in its 19th year, Rotary is hoping that, as in the past, around 80 teams will join them for the event on Saturday April 25, which will officially begin at 1.30pm, when it is opened by local television and radio personality, Jemma Cooper.

The fundraising event which takes place at Parish Wharf Leisure Centre invites individuals, schools, businesses, local groups and community organisations to join in.

Teams that take part are able to raise funds for their own projects as well as selected Rotary charities, which for this year are the RNLI Portishead Boat House appeal and St Peter’s Hospice.

Rotary Breakfast Club

otarians have been making a significant contribution to Portishead and the wider community for more than 35 years. The group meets on Tuesday evenings over dinner to plan activities.

For those who have less time and cannot attend weekly meetings a new group has now been formed and it is now inviting new members.

The new group, made up of men and women from a variety of business and professional backgrounds, meets fortnightly for a short sharp breakfast meeting and between meetings the members are in touch by e-mail and through social media.

On March 5 the new Gordano Breakfast Rotary Club received formal recognition as a Rotary Club from the international Rotary community.

The new club meets at Brewers Fayre, Gordano Gate every other Thursday at 7.15am for breakfast, networking and planning of community fundraising and other events, with a guest speaker once a month.

Commuter Coach service goes from strength to strength Getting to work shouldn’t be hard work!

The North Bristol Commuter Coach service which links Portishead with employers in Aztec West, Filton and Abbey Wood is going from strength to strength.

Just over a year since the executive-style service launched, hundreds of people living in Portishead now use the service every month to travel to work.

The service has been specifically designed with the commuter in mind with stops in North Bristol close to major employers such as Rolls Royce, Airbus, the Ministry of Defence as well as serving Aztec West, Filton College and Bristol Parkway railway station.

Four services depart Portishead between 6.40am and 9.05am and return from North Bristol between 4pm and 6.30pm. An additional service leaves North Bristol at lunchtime on Fridays for those who finish earlier.

lthough the Portishead to Bristol line was reopened for freight traffic from Bristol to Royal Portbury docks in 2002, no regular passenger trains have run on the line for over 50 years. If all goes to plan passenger trains will be running again by May 2019.

Local residents will have noticed the railway line has been cleared of vegetation, on both sides of Quays Avenue in Portishead and onwards to Pill. The track has been cleared so that further environmental and engineering studies can be carried out as Phase One of the MetroWest scheme progresses. Recently, the Preliminary Business Case for Phase One of the scheme was accepted by the four local councils and it confirmed that the scheme is very good value for money, that there are no fundamental impediments to delivering the scheme by 2019 and that it is both commercially sound and is affordable.

While the scheme has been progressing, the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) has been considering an application for a level crossing on Quays Avenue. The ORR’s current policy is to refuse applications for level crossings except in exceptional circumstances. The ORR has now ruled

that they would “not contemplate a level crossing at the proposed Quays Avenue, Portishead location”. This would appear to rule out the possibility of the station being

by Waitrose car park and so the corner of Harbour Road and Quays Avenue is the alternative viable option.

Work on an application for a Development Consent Order (DCO) is due to start later this year. The DCO, if granted, will give permission to build and operate the railway. Red Nose Day Danceathon 2015

s Comic Relief swept the country in March, busy Portishead mum Jane Batt, creator of the Practically Perfect Mums website and an established blogger, signed up for the Red Nose Day Danceathon.

Jane joined the fundraising blogging team known as ‘Team Honk’, a couple of thousand other dancers, the legend we know as Claudia Winkelman and a host of other celebrities to dance for six hours, nonstop to raise money for good causes.

The 2015 team honk, who ran a baton the length of the country for Sport Relief in 2014,has already raised almost £20,000 as Gordano Living went to print and they are still collecting the coffers.

t has been confirmed that Portishead will not be allowed to have a level crossing across Quays Avenue when the Portishead to Bristol rail link is reopened, therefore the new railway station will need to be on the east side of Quays Avenue.

Following this news, the question has been raised as to whether or not the land near to Lidl and Waitrose, originally designated for a station, could be used to provide a much needed stake park in the town.

Whilst this might sound like exciting news for skaters and BMX riders, the suggestion has been met with caution by skate park enthusiasts who believe the land in question is owned by Persimmon and would only be transferred to the local authority for the building of a station.

That leaves the question on everyone’s lips: “Will the local authority work towards securing the site for a skatepark?”

Easter Extravaganza

t can be tricky explaining the rollercoaster days of the first Easter with your children, but help is on hand with a variety of fun activities for children aged three to 11 at the St Barnabas Centre in West Hill, Portishead where they are invited to experience the Easter story through craft and drama.

Children and their parents are promised a fun-filled morning at the Centre on Saturday March 30 between 10am and midday. There will be a variety of activities on offer including Easter collages and baskets, egg painting, Easter gardens and cards, plus some more unusual items like Roman sword making, clay tomb modelling, Jesus buried in a bun and breaking out of the bun tomb. or any organisation, celebrating an 80th birthday is no mean feat, and members of Portbury WI decided to mark the occasion with a plaque, recently hung in the Village Hall.

President Sally Nicol explains: “The WI has experienced a resurgence of interest in recent years as women realise just what the WI can offer them.

“Portbury WI has had three new members this year, and with a busy and interesting programme of monthly speakers, activities and trips, we are continuing to offer the education and friendship that originally brought women to the WI. “With the National Federation of Women Institutes celebrating its 100th birthday in 2015, and Avon Federation its 40th birthday, there will be lots of celebrations taking place throughout the year, so this is a great time to join.”

As people grow older, mobility can decline, reducing the ability to get out and about as much as they would like. As a Good Neighbours or befriending volunteer, you may help an older person with their shopping, to change a light bulb, or simply spare an hour or two to have a chat.

Royal Voluntary Service volunteers also perform ‘safe and well’ checks, to make sure the older people who use the service have everything they need to stay happy, healthy and independent in their own homes.

Sharon Donkin, service manager, said: “This is a really vital service for older people in the community. Taking someone out to the shops or spending time having a chat may not seem like much, but it makes a massive difference to the older people who use the service. “

Adventure Park New Attraction

C

attle Country Adventure Park in Berkeley is to invest £70,000 in a new major attraction as part of its continued investment into the tourism industry.

The farm based attraction says it will unveil the new attractions in early spring to help maintain its position as one of the best “days out” in the region.

These will include a new giant indoor animal touch barn where visitors can get up close and handle a range of farmyard animals and listen to educational talks.

There will also be new educational zones featuring bird boxes, interactive learning signs and a solar powered water fountain to teach youngsters about solar power.

Cattle Country’s general manager, Stuart

Burnell (pictured right), said: “Last year without doubt has been our busiest year on record.

“We want to continue growing year on year and therefore we will continue our investment into our facilities.

“We’ve listened to our customers who want to see more animals, and be able to handle them, and so that’s exactly what we plan to offer in 2015.”

The reinvestment into the park follows on from the new attractions unveiled last year, which included Dizzy Ducks ride ons and a new Beach Barn sand play area.

In addition to the new attractions, the park is expanding its rare cattle breeds with the introduction of White Park Cattle and Gloucester Cattle.

Temporary move for Gordano Carpets

he closure of the Co-op supermarket in Wyndham Way has resulted in the temporary loss of vital car parking spaces close to the centre of Portishead.

These spaces, whilst for Co-op customers, were often used by shoppers, who before or after using the supermarket, would walk through to the High Street or call in to Summit Outdoor Leisure, in the Wyndham Way car park to do their shopping.

Whilst the supermarket is closed and many people are using supermarkets away from the High Street, some local traders say they have noticed a drop in trade.

ordano School pupil Alice Linton-Butt, who was crowned Miss Teen Inspiration South West in November 2014, is about to appear in the Miss Inspiration Finals.

Alice chose to talk about her recent experiences with illness in the Miss Inspiration South West heats. She talked about how people treat the sick and disabled and how this has inspired her to educate people on the matter.

Alice is no stranger to the world of pageantry, as she has previously represented Great Britain in Texas, USA. She has recently given a talk at Gordano School explaining how appearing in pageants has improved her confidence. She also finds time to work as a Rugby World cup Young Rugby Ambassador, helping to promote rugby for women in England, and an Army Cadet.

North Somerset Arts Week May 1-10 T

he first ten days of May will see the mix of North Somerset’s creative talent taking centre stage in North Somerset Arts Week 2015. Participating artists work in a variety of mediums, and this event represents a range of disciplines, including painting, ceramics, glass, sculpture, mixedmedia, textiles, jewellery, digital media, music, theatre, and filmmaking.

With nearly 300 artists, talents include the likes of Stephen Jacobson, Dawn Sidoli and Alfred Stockham, Barley Wood Studios, Brandon Pottery as well as community, education and art-therapy groups. Jeweller Jeff Bright of Clevedon Craft Centre will be hosting retrospective celebrating his 45 years in the business.

Venues opening their doors across North Somerset include studios, galleries, community centres, schools and other quirky and unique exhibition spaces.

North Somerset’s own ‘Theatre Orchard’

will be working alongside the very popular and hilarious ‘Living Spit’ performing in their Theatre Shop in Clevedon, whilst in Weston-Super-Mare, the ‘Film Weston’ group will be screening drama, documentary and art films from and about the region. Nailsea Tithe Barn will also be hosting performance events and there will be music events throughout the area too.

Arts Week 2015, has received sponsorship from North Somerset Council, Weston College and Sustainable Kitchens. Details of the exhibition venues, artists participating and events being held are being published in a brochure – which will be widely available from libraries, cafes, community centres etc. in advance of the event.

Smoking is the greatest single cause of illness and premature death in the UK. We know the health risks and that smoking cause’s heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure and many other illnesses, yet we continue to smoke. Smoking is not a conscious behaviour; people continue the habit of smoking because of beliefs and behaviours in their sub-conscious mind. Somewhere in the past they have taken on board the advertising and selfprogramming which makes it difficult to stop. Hypnotherapy can help if you really want to give up and, you can do so without too much effort or any side-effects. It’s drug-free and can bypass the conscious mind to work directly with the subconscious mind. Many other therapies rely on working with the conscious part of our minds, which makes them less effective.

Allotment Virgins Stroke survivor Lori Rowsell and her family have been sharing their allotment experiences with Gordano Living readers ever since they were first allocated a plot at Gertie Gales allotments in North Weston several years ago.

In return for her regular blog, Gordano Living is pleased to make a monthly donation to the Portishead Stroke Group which runs a drop in café at Clarence House in Portishead High Street from 10.30am on the first Friday of each month.

The drop-in sessions offer good company, practical advice and can point stroke survivors of all ages in the right direction for help and support. Lori can’t stress enough that this is not just for ‘old’ people. Lori was in her forties when she experienced a stroke and has been surprised to find out how many young people are affected by strokes. Carers and friends are also very welcome.

e’re not natural gardeners or indeed allotmenteers, so at this time of year are usually running around like headless chickens working out what to do, what to grow, what went well and more importantly what went badly in previous years. Well to be honest it’s actually me doing the panicking as Andy is much more laid back. I don’t know what to start and get quite confused that there are always so many “best ways”. It’s hard to ignore emails that tell me the “The Top Six Vegetables to Grow This Season” or the advice in the Sunday papers of “Jobs to Do This Week”.

It’s certainly not helped by the stroke which means I don’t remember what I did last week let alone last year (although friends tell me that is more to do with being 52 than having a stroke).

So this month has been about taking a deep breath and going back to basics.

Allotment Virgins from the last four years (!) have been re-read. The first book, aptly named, “Your Allotment” has been re-read.

A plot plan has been drawn up so I can check the rotation plan is being correctly adhered to and all the seeds hiding in the garage have been unearthed so there’s no panic buying when I see those four for the price of three offers.

Andy always tells me “If you don’t enjoy it, don’t do it” and reminds me that we didn’t start the allotment until May the first year so we’ve definitely not fallen behind yet.

Peel and cut potatoes into chunks, boil with the garlic for about 15 mins until tender.

Mash with milk and half the butter and season as desired.

Heat remaining butter in large pan until foaming.

Shred the kale, discarding the stalks.

Cut salad onions into 2cm pieces. Add to the pan and sauté for 5 mins until softened.

Fold the greens and cheese through the mash and add loads of black pepper.

This is a supper on its own but also lovely as a side veg with pie and gravy .

Just remember to adjust the ingredients otherwise it’s going to be very large portions!

pril is a beautiful month for gardening. Trees are in blossom, tulips are flowering and our gardens are bursting in to life all around us.

There is plenty to be getting on with, but be prepared. The warm sunshine and longer hours can soon change to heavy rain, hail stones and still some chilly nights. April is a month that can be very changeable!

Jobs for April • Leave spring bulbs at least six weeks after flowering before removing foliage • Give outdoor trees and shrubs a feed to encourage strong and healthy growth • Plant new trees, shrubs, perennials, alpines and evergreen hedges • Weed borders and put down mulch • Your grass will want cutting this month. Apply a quality spring feed, re-seed or re-turf damaged areas and if time permits scarify the lawn and remove dead thatch/moss to promote growth of emerging grass • Tie in new growth on climbers • Sow your greenhouse/frost tender crops such as tomatoes, courgettes and runner beans and keep them warm!

• Plant fruit trees, fruit canes and bushes • Check grease bands around fruit trees and replace if required • Keep weeding!

Plant of the Month April – Rhododendron Ancient Greek – ‘Rose Tree’ and is evergreen and deciduous.

Ornamental plants Includes azaleas which are frequently used around foundations and occasionally as hedges, and many larger-leafed rhododendrons lend themselves well to more informal plantings and woodland gardens.

They prefer acidic soil and sheltered conditions and grow best in areas with high rainfall, compact hybrid rhododendrons can also be planted in containers.

Dwarf alpine can be planted in rock gardens, Do not plant too deep - The top of the root ball should be at the surface of the ground in ideal planting sites or an inch or two above the surface of the ground or even in raised beds in less than ideal sites.

Coming in an array of shades, rhododendrons produce great blocks of colour in the garden as branches become obscured by a profusion of beautiful flowers.

The flowers will last throughout spring adding colour to a garden when most flowers have yet to bloom.

It is a fully hardy plant that can survive down to at least -22F (-30C). However, late frosts or cold winds, can damage young growth and will stunt the plant.

While dogs have been domesticated for thousands of years, their metabolism and organs have still not adapted to process food in the same way humans do. Therefore foods that humans can digest and metabolise with no complications can be very dangerous if ingested by dogs.

There is a very long list of harmful foods, so it is best to only allow your dog access to diets designed for dogs and be vigilant for any scavenging to avoid common food related poisonings.

Theobromine, which is found in chocolate, causes extreme rises in heart rate in dogs making them agitated and unsettled. At high enough levels it can lead to vomiting, diarrhoea or worse. Sadly there is no antidote and it should be treated as an emergency if any chocolate is ingested to avoid symptoms becoming worse.

Dogs are unable to process the tannins in grapes and their dried equivalents (raisins, currants, and sultanas) and this can severely compromise their kidneys, so veterinary care should be sought to treat this issue.

Onions and other bulbs, such as garlic and shallots, may not appear to affect dogs with ingestion immediately but eating

any foods with these ingredients (ie table scraps) can causes permanent damage to the red blood cells.

Macadamia nuts have also been found to cause problems and so should be avoided.

Cooked bones are difficult for dogs to digest and often cause vomiting and diarrhoea. The dog may be unable to pass large bones and vets are often called upon to remove the impaction surgically.

Sticking to diets designed for the complete nutrition of canines is definitely in their best interest.

Portishead animal lover Sally King gives her time freely to save unwanted cats and dogs from being destroyed. In her spare time the 43-year-old mum, who also runs a pet care service looking after animals in their own homes while their families are away, helps run HEART, the animal rescue organisation. HEART takes in unwanted pets, finds them temporary foster homes and then works hard to find permanent loving homes for them.

Auto Enrolment (AE) was introduced in 2012 as a way to ensure people have pensions in place for their retirement.

Until now it has been up to employees to decide whether they want to opt into their employer’s pension scheme. However, by 2018 all employers must enrol all eligible employees into a workplace pension. Employees have three months after the scheme has been set up to opt out if they do not wish to be included in their employer’s scheme. There are penalties for employers who do not comply once they have passed their staging date (the date the rules become compulsary for your company).

According to The Pensions Regulator “over 1.3 million small and micro employers are due to stage over the next two years” Is this you and your business?

according to the number of employees a company has. Since October 2012 larger companies have been automatically enroling their employees into pension schemes. Now is the time for smaller businesses to start planning for AE. By 2016 an average of 45,000 companies per month will be staging.

Q:

I’ve received an email from HMRC saying that I’m due a tax refund. What should I do with it?

A:

Firstly, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) would never send notifications of a tax rebate by email, or ask you to disclose personal or payment information by email. So this email already sounds

suspicious.

Also, look at the sender’s email address. Fraudsters often have email accounts with HMRC or revenue names in them (such as ‘refunds@hmrc.org.uk’).

These email addresses are used to mislead you. However be aware, fraudsters can falsify (spoof) the ‘from’ address to look like a legitimate HMRC address (for example ‘@hmrc. gov.uk’), so the email address isn’t conclusive.

But the safest way of dealing with this is not to open it or click on any attachment or links, and send it to phishing@ hmrc.gsi.gov.uk. HMRC should reply to confirm whether it is a scam email or not.
