o help take some of the stress out of festive shopping, retailers in Portishead will be opening late on Thursdays in the run up to Christmas.

On December 4, 11 and 18, many of the High Street retailers and other shops in the town will remain open until 8pm.

To coincide with the Thursday later night opening, Portishead Chamber of Commerce has organised a Christmas Market, selling a mixture of crafts, food and gifts within the Poacher car park. Combined with the town’s famous Christmas lights and free festive entertainment, the shopping opportunity is designed to give people a relaxed retail experience.

Vickie Hancock, president of the Portishead Chamber, said: “This is a great opportunity for people to enjoy the real spirit of Christmas, shopping in our thriving High

Street where they can purchase a wide range of unique, unusual and quality gifts without having to endure traffic jams, large crowds and the crush often experienced in large shopping complexes at this time of year.

“The town’s fabulous Christmas lights are reason enough to walk up and down the High Street and we are delighted that people can now do this on three Thursday evenings, with the added bonus of browsing a great variety of local products in the shops and at the Christmas Market.”

Portishead’s seasonal shopping event is sponsored by the town’s Chamber of Commerce and Waitrose.

ortishead’s Victorian Evening is one of the main fundraising activities for the town’s Christmas lights.

On Friday December 12 the High Street will be closed to traffic between 6.30pm – 8.30pm as the town centre becomes a festive wonderland. Portishead will turn the clocks back to Victorian times as a variety of stalls, sideshows and street entertainers set up throughout the High Street.

The smell of roasting chestnuts and mulled wine will fill the air as traders ply their wares and shops stay open late in to the evening, with shopkeepers and stall holders, dressed in Victorian costume, inviting visitors to share in some seasonal cheer.

Portishead Town Band will play Christmas tunes on the Tudor Garage forecourt, there will be jazz at Tinca Gallery and street musicians will be found at intervals through the High Street.

More than 50 charitable groups, community organisations and traders have already booked their stalls, but there is still room for more. To book a stall at the Victorian evening email lorraineschneider23@gmail.com.

n the November issue of Gordano Living we explained how Portishead Christmas lights are organised purely by volunteers who work tirelessly all year round to raise funds to help keep the festive bulbs burning. In addition to the fundraising events and activities, completion of grant applications and planning the switch on, there are thousands of bulbs to be tested, health and safety issues to be adhered to and the physical work of putting them up at the end of November and taking them back down in January. This is all done by unpaid volunteers who give their time and experience generously, to make sure Portishead has one of the best Christmas lights displays in the South West.

here will be lots to see and do at the Victorian Evening in Portishead High Street from 6.30pm on December 12. In addition to the late night shopping, stalls, games and rides, don’t forget to visit Santa’s Grotto – at Flutterbies 6-8pm where pre-booking is advisable.

Portishead Town Band will play at Tudor Garage Forecourt throughout the evening and look out for the Highly Strung band and Portishead Male Voice Choir. Young children’s fairground rides and sideshows will be situated close to The Precinct and also at

the other end of the Victorian fair near to the Roath Road junction and road closure, where you will also find the Oxfam shop which will be offering some Victorian Evening specials. n September, members of Portishead Yacht and Sailing Club (PYSC), including many of the lifeboat volunteers, took part in Bart’s Bash, a global sailing race and fundraising event that saw thousands of sailors worldwide take to the seas to honour Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson, the gold and silver Olympic medallist who died in an accident while training for the America’s Cup in 2013.

The event was organised by the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, set up in Andrew’s memory to inspire the next generation of young sailors in the UK. Portishead sailors entered into the spirit of the occasion to join the race which aimed to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest sailing race in the world.

Bart’s Bash has so far raised almost £300,000 and another sailing event is in the planning stages.

ork is on schedule for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) boathouse in Portishead’s Pier Road. Once the new lifeboat station is complete the formal adoption of The Portishead Lifeboat Trust by the RNLI will take place. The Portishead and Bristol Lifeboat will benefit from a wider support network when it is adopted, but it will remain a community based organisation manned by local volunteers and it will still rely on local fundraising to help keep it operational.

Contractor, Andrew Scott Ltd, has now completed construction of the 60 metre long concrete launch ramp and work has also been completed on the low water launch area to the west of Royal Beach. A new beach access staircase is currently being built using precast concrete blocks of a cobblestone appearance and the actual lifeboat station is taking shape, with more steel framework in place, internal walls being built, a concrete staircase in situ and external brick face in progress.

Project manager Gavin Evans said: “We are pleased to report that all on shore works have been completed in time to meet with the planning consent, which was in place to protect migratory birds.”

T

he most frequently asked question about re-opening the Portishead railway line is “why is it taking so long?”

Re-opening the rail link to Bristol is not as simple as renewing the track and building a station. The line will be linking into the national network and, in part, will be running on the main line. Consequently there is a mountain of financial, legal,

engineering, environmental, technical, and risk issues that all have to be dealt with.

All have to move forward in unison to deliver a viable working railway. During the Portishead Railway Group’s 15 year campaign, we have often seen progress on some of these issues, but not all. Now however, at last they all are moving forward together, with real momentum.

North Somerset Council is taking the lead on the project, within the West of England Partnership, and they are well aware of the milestones and timescales that need to be achieved.

The Preliminary Business Case for Phase 1 of the MetroWest scheme was approved by the West of England Partnership in September 2014 after 12 months’ work and confirms the project is good value for money, that there are no fundamental impediments to delivering the scheme in 2019 and that the scheme is commercially sound and affordable.

Work on the full business case is due to start in 2015 along with the application for the Development Consent Order (DCO).

The DCO gives permission to build and operate and this plus the full business case are expected to be approved in 2017.

Construction is then due to start in 2017, with trains running on the line in May 2019.

While all the work already mentioned is progressing Network Rail will also be working through their GRIP (Governance for Rail Investment Projects) process, trains to run on the track will need to be sourced, our timetable will be integrated into the national rail timetable and pathways will need to be secured for ‘our’ train to run on the main line. Electrification of the rail network will also have an effect on the project and the location of the Portishead station will need to be resolved.

Portishead Railway Group will be monitoring the progress of these milestones during the next five years to ensure that the timetable does not stall at any stage and to ensure that trains are running from Portishead in May 2019.

ortishead Pool Community Trust has celebrated another great season at the open air pool. The seafront lido welcomed 40,400 visitors during the 2014 season, which ran from April to September.

A pool spokesman said: “Numbers were slightly down on last year (43,750) due to the poor weather in August, but it was still the second best season since 2008 when the pool was taken over by the community.”

Successful events this year included a repeat of the Longest Day Swim on June 19 with over £13,000 raised for the Raj K Soni Legacy Fund, which supports local youth sports and music activities. This was followed in July by the ever popular inter-schools gala when five local primary schools battled it out to win the coveted cup.

At the end of the season, pool volunteers hosted a Macmillan Coffee Morning which raised an incredible £1,600 for the charity which supports people living with cancer and their families.

In a new venture, for the first time in its 52 year history, the pool is staying open on Saturday mornings until Christmas for cold water swimming. Instead of the normal 280C the water has been gradually cooling, but it is still attracting an increasing number of enthusiastic visitors who are passionate about the health and wellbeing benefits of cold water swimming.

A special Christmas Day swim is being organised. The spokesman added: “This will be a free event for swimmers and spectators, although donations will be welcome. We are hoping for a big turnout for a bracing cold water dip to build up the appetite for Christmas lunch.

Doors open at 10.15am to be in the water for 10.30am for a mass start.

We will clear the pool at 11am to give everybody time to go home and tend to the roasties. Changing rooms will be open and hot showers available. Wetsuits, Christmas jumpers, Santa hats and reindeer antlers are welcome but not compulsory.”

In November the new recruits were welcomed into the police service by senior officers and swore their cadet oath in front of their families and friends at the police headquarters in Portishead.

The cadets and their families were welcomed by Sergeant Gavin O’Reilly, the unit leader, who told them more about the cadets’ role in communities, including how cadets from the Churchill-based unit played an important role in finding a toddler who went missing at the Balloon Fiesta last year. He outlined the training the cadets had already received since the unit began in September, preparing them for their first public duties.

The new cadets joined the Remembrance Day parade in Portishead and will be on patrol at both the Christmas lights switch-on and the Victorian evening in the town.

Lions Club of Portishead, Portishead Neighbourhood Watch and the Avon and Somerset Police Community Trust for supporting the scheme.

The uniformed cadets will meet once a week during term time at Gordano School, to learn about all aspects of policing and volunteering to help their communities.

The 23 teenagers who have signed up are all aged between 14 and 17 and go to Clevedon, Gordano, Nailsea and St Katherine’s schools.

After initial training Avon and Somerset Police Cadets get involved with helping their communities, delivering crime prevention messages and supporting police at local events.

Some of the older cadets also volunteer with neighbourhood teams, accompanying PCSOs on foot patrols, helping to carry out house-to-house enquiries and joining Community Speed Watch volunteers, monitoring speeds on local roads.

As well as getting hands-on making things better in their communities, cadets get the chance to take part in fun team-building exercises, trips and activities.

The Avon and Somerset Volunteer Police Cadet scheme is run by police officers, police staff and volunteers in their spare time, with costs met through sponsorship.

ouncillors, members of Portishead’s Academy of Gymnastics, including Commonwealth Games gymnast Ruby Harrold, and players Cllr Felicity Baker declared the new gym from Bristol Rugby Club open were among the guests who attended the official opening of the new gym at Parish Wharf Leisure Centre.

The opening marked completion of the first phase of North Somerset Council’s £1.2m investment in the Portishead centre.

Over the past 10 weeks the bowls hall has been transformed into a brand new stateof-the-art gym housing 82 stations, making it three times the size of the original gym.

The new gym has been fitted with the latest health and fitness equipment to enable members to achieve their goals with the support of the centre’s qualified instructors.

Cllr Felicity Baker, the council’s executive member for leisure services, said: “This investment will lower costs to the council while at the same time improving the services on offer. This shows how the council is re-shaping the services it provides for the community to safeguard them in the future.”

In line with the transformation of the new gym, work is being completed on the

refurbishment of the changing rooms that serve both the gym and the new studio space and sports hall. The soft play area will be made into a community meeting space, as well as additional office space to serve the increasing number of customers through the centre.

The final stages of the project will include the amalgamation of the reception and café areas, creating a new entrance space and the previous gym renovated into an additional studio space to increase the number and variety of classes available.

The final piece of the jigsaw will be completed by March next year when a small refurbishment of the swimming pool changing room toilets will take place.

n the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918 the guns of Europe fell silent.

Remembrance Sunday provides an opportunity for the nation to pay tribute to those who lost their lives fighting for their country in all wars.

Dr Liam Fox and his wife Jesme joined members of the Portishead community for the town’s Remembrance Parade on November 9. Led by the town band, the procession, organised by the Portishead branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL), had an impressive line-up of RBL members, war veterans and members of the armed forces who were joined by scores of people from a variety of community groups and services. The parade made its way from Stoke Road, through the High Street to St Peter’s Church, where a special service, including a two minute silence, took place.

Members of the Portishead Lifeboat Trust took part in their last Remembrance Parade. They expect to parade as members of the RNLI in 2015.

    T  F un and laughter gave Halloween a new twist at Portishead’s Co-operative store.

On October 31, employee Robert Lord stood alongside the Halloween goods at the supermarket’s entrance, telling jokes, rather than spooky stories, to raise money for charity.

As Robert delivered witty lines, customers donated their loose change to show their appreciation.

The event raised more than £200 for St Peter’s Hospice and Robert says he is now looking for new material so that he can repeat the fundraiser in 2015.

The programme will be recorded at the school on Friday December 12 starting at 6.30 pm.

Any Questions? was first broadcast in October 1948.

Every week it visits a different part of the country with a panel of four speakers who answer questions from the audience.

The programme provides the opportunity for people to challenge politicians, policy makers, writers and thinkers.

Any Questions? is chaired by Jonathon Dimbleby, and the panel has historically featured top politicians, notable writers and poets, and many figures from the world of art, science, business and other areas of

public life.

A spokesman for Gordano School said: “Part of the excitement in hosting Any Questions? is finding out who will be sitting on the panel, and we are anticipating the evening to provide a lively and animated atmosphere of debate.”

  C elebrations for the first anniversary of the North Bristol Commuter Coach service last month were topped off with an important transport award.

The executive service links Portishead with employers in North Bristol, such as Aztec West, Rolls Royce, Airbus and the Ministry of Defence. It is run by The Kings Ferry in conjunction with North Somerset Council, who were handed the ‘Partnership of the Year’ Award at the Route One Awards, along with Volvo.

The service has gone from strength to strength in its first year, notching up nearly 21,000 passenger journeys. To celebrate this achievement and the anniversary, passengers were treated to birthday cake on their morning commute.

Current passengers have given the service their vote of confidence, with 100% declaring themselves either ‘satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’ with the service in a recent

survey. And 55% said they had switched from using their cars.

All the coaches have air conditioning, reclining seats and free wifi to help passengers make the most of their journey time. There are also several ticket options on offer to suit everyone’s work patterns and travelling habits. Tickets range from annual, four week and five-day season passes, to day tickets and ‘Anytime’ journey credits which give commuters the flexibility to travel whenever they want in one year.

t’s been a long time coming, but Sainsbury’s opened its new £15million store in Serbert Road, Portishead on Wednesday October 29.

Local children helped store manager Paul Morrison cut the ribbon, including RNLI mascot Stormy Stan and William from St Joseph’s Primary School, who won the store’s bag for life drawing competition.

Live music was provided by the North Somerset for Young Musicians band as the bags for life, designed

by William, were handed out free of charge to customers.

Mr Morrison said: “I would like to thank everyone for welcoming us to Portishead so warmly. The store

is looking great and I know it will provide a fantastic shopping experience for the community.”

The store includes a petrol station, cafe, delicatessen, a home ware, electrical and clothing range and an onsite bakery.



ollowing the opening of Sainsbury’s petrol station, Portishead resident Annette Hennessy campaigned outside the site calling for fairness when it comes to petrol prices. The mum of two says she is a supporter of Sainsbury’s and she will happily shop in the store, but she also wants to see fairness for Portishead and called for Sainsbury’s petrol prices to be brought in line with those at Sainsbury’s Weston and Brislington petrol stations, which are currently cheaper.

Waitrose garage in Portishead has reduced its fuel prices to remain competitive with Sainsbury’s.

Meanwhile Mrs Hennessy says she will continue to campaign outside Sainsbury’s in an attempt to achieve fairness for Portishead motorists.

The boys all said spending time with their families was the best Christmas present they could get, although JJ said he would also like a new Playstation.

When asked what was better, Christmas pudding or spouts…surprisingly the boys all agreed sprouts were superior.

The Christmas concert was a fantastic show. Union J did an amazing set with great lights and a flurry of snow falling.

Ella Rothwell was great too and all the donations raised from tickets for the event went to the Wallace & Gromit Grand Appeal.

ocal modern jive class Portishead LeRoc held a charity dance in November which raised over £1,600 for the Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

For the seventh year running the fabulous 14-piece funk, soul, disco, rock and blues band, Bring Down the House, kept everyone on the dance floor all night and left them hollering for more.

Heather Parsons, owner of Portishead LeRoc and organiser of the event, said: “This dance is one of the highlights of our year and we are delighted to have raised so much money for the charity.

The band was brilliant as always and we are grateful for their continued support.

Their reputation is growing within the LeRoc world and they draw dancers from far and wide whenever they play.”

The band generously gives their time free of charge for this annual event and has helped Portishead LeRoc and their supporters to raise well over £10,000 for CHSW since 2006.

ix months after becoming the Avon Schools’ Orienteering Champions, the Redland High School orienteering team has been awarded silver medals at the British Schools’ Score Championship.

Orienteering is a sport that combines cross-country running with map reading and score orienteering involves trying to find as many controls as possible in a given amount of time. Controls usually have different point values depending upon distance from the start and the difficulty of navigation required to find them.

This was the first time the school had entered the British Schools’ Score Championship. Kathryn Saunders, Abigail Ehrlich, Emily Finnimore, Alexandra Morris, Sylvie Livingstone, Laura Hogg, Claudia Spice and Grace Hillier travelled to Redditch to test themselves against 400 of the UK’s best orienteers from 50 schools around the country. Claudia Spice was also awarded a bronze medal in the Year 7 individual girls’ race.

Caroline Bateson, headmistress at Redland High, said: “All the girls involved should feel very proud of this fantastic achievement, particularly since some of the runners had never competed in this Score format before. Doing so at the British Championships demonstrates true Redland spirit!”

ordano sixth form students are being given a chance to get a taste of university life.

A record number of sixth form students from Gordano School in Portishead have been accepted onto the Access to Bristol University Scheme this year. In all, 27 students have been offered places on the programme which provides eight afternoon sessions designed to give pupils an insight to life as a student at the University of Bristol.

Beth Davis, sixth form learning mentor, said: “This is an excellent opportunity for our sixth formers to gain a really good insight into how subjects are taught and studied at degree level, and to understand some of the research that takes place at Bristol University.”

The University of Bristol invites students to apply, detailing the subject they would like to study at university, and why. In addition to allowing students to experience university life, the scheme helps students with their applications to UCAS for university places.

Jeanne Fairs, head of sixth form said: “We are delighted that we can motivate so many of our sixth formers onto this scheme.”

EH boys and staff dressed up to re-create what life might have been like at the school in the past, as part of celebrating the 425th anniversary of the founding of the school.

Pupils embraced their task to recreate a sense of history in the school, dressing from any period in the last 425 years, while teachers applied Victorian teaching methods to create an old-fashioned feel in lessons, contrasting education today with that of the past.

Boys in the school choir wore the traditional QEH sixteenth century bluecoat uniform comprising long blue gabardine gown with yellow socks - so familiar on the streets of Bristol when the school began in 1590.

For the special 425 Lunch QEH head chef Colin Wood, had developed a new sausage aptly named the Elizabethan Polonian Sawsedge. After much research and with the cooperation of QEH’s quality farm style butcher Farm Meats at Easter Compton, this was served up to the boys. This special sausage has already been trialled by the butchers and is so delicious that it was a sell out with customers and has now become a permanent product line.

A school spokesman said: “Above all, the whole school entered into the spirit of the occasion and had a fun, memorable day!”

The many other ‘425’ events included a series of guest lectures given by old boys of the school, among whom were economist and environmentalist, Tim Sunderland and BBC journalist Nick Beake.

tudents from Portishead’s Gordano School have produced an anthology of spooky stories entitled Tears before Bedtime.

A group of sixth formers worked with school assistant librarian and local author Diana Toft, to produce a collection of spinetingling stories.

The idea began 18 months ago, when a number of students joined a creative writing group.

The project was headed by Mrs Toft, a fiction writer and author of the Wolven Trilogy, who worked alongside the students to help get the anthology ready for publication.

The event on December 6, which takes place at The Venue, which is the function hall at Portishead Working Men’s Club in Slade Road, is being organised by Kim O’Hare, Jeanette Shipp and their friends. The black tie and cocktail dress evening will include dancing to a live band and disco, a buffet supper, raffles and an auction.

Kim has chosen The Brain Tumour charity to support, as completely out of the blue her daughter India (pictured) was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Thanks to an operation and hospital care, India has made a full recovery and thankful for this, Kim continues to support charities that help such conditions.

Jeanette has chosen Bibic as her charity. Jeanette’s son Sammy (pictured) suffers from autism and has learning difficulties and Bibic supports children like Sammy and their families. This is Jeanette’s way of saying thank you to them, with a little help from her friends.

Kim and Jeanette invite family, friends and members of the local community to join them for this wonderful fundraiser which runs from 7.30pm-1am.

ortishead Stroke Group was set up by stroke survivors for the benefit of stroke survivors, as part of the national charity Different Stokes. It is primarily an exercise class, which can improve strength, balance and confidence and can contribute to recovery.

ortishead Players are delighted to present Oh What A Lovely War in the centenary year of the outbreak of the Great War. This musical play chronicles the horrors of WW1 through songs and documents of the period. It was first performed by the Theatre Workshop at Stratford East in 1963 under the direction of Joan Littlewood, followed by the film version, in 1969, directed by the late Richard Attenborough.

The war is played out by a group of Pierrots, as an ‘end of the pier’ show. It is both humorous and profoundly moving and demonstrates the futility of war and class divides of the era.

A spokesman for the Players said: “We are sure our audiences will enjoy this lively and emotional play, which includes familiar WW1 songs, often with ‘alternate’ words!”

anta and his sleigh are once again expected to be touring the roads of Portishead from December 1.

The Portishead Lions Club carol float, complete with Santa and helpers, will be visiting as many streets as it can in the run up to Christmas. Volunteers will be shaking their collection tins to raise money for Lions’ charities and Santa will be looking forward to hearing stories about how good children have been this year.

This month he talks you through Inverted Rows.

There are many variations of a row exercise in the gym environment - Bent-Over Barbell or Dumbbell Rows, T-Bar Rows, Seated Rows, Prone Bench Rows, Seated Row Machine, etc – all with the common denominator of bringing your hands toward your torso against resistance.

In recent years though, mostly thanks to the increased popularity of suspension training, like TRX, a very basic exercise has made a comeback in to the mainstream – an Inverted Row. In essence, it’s holding on to

something stationary (a bar) or semi-stationary (a suspension trainer or gym rings) and assuming a horizontal position (facing upwards) and pulling your chest toward your hands.

Aside from general variety within training being a good reason to give this exercise a go, it’s also a great way to work the Lats (major muscles of the back) if you have lower back issues.

I’ll explain: The assumed position of exercises like Bent-Over Rows, T-Bar Rows, and Seated Rows require bending of the lumbar region and holding that position static whilst load is far away from this lever point; this requires tremendous strength from the Erectus Spinae muscles of the lower back and is often the weak link as load is increased, leading to bad form e.g. rounding of the spine, leg drive.

Alternative chest supported rows, such as Prone Bench Rows and Seated Row Machine, remove the lower back as a significant stabilising muscle during the exercise, which is not

really what we want either.

This is where Inverted Rows come in; your core is still having to work hard to stabilise your neutral body position – consider the body posture like an upside down plank – and yet the stress on the lower back will not be increased with exercise difficulty.

This combination provides a great way to hit the major muscles of the back, help avoid against cheating and is a comfortable and sensible progressive option for those with lower back issues.

Why not save the resolutions until January 1st: ‘go nuts’ on cake, crackers and crisps this Christmas?

I’m serious. My best piece of fitness advice if you are not already on some form of ‘plan’ - is to enjoy yourself.

I mean, it’s once a year.

With the party season in full swing, temptations are around every corner… …so why not turn a few of them?

Office parties, social catch ups and the big day itself, means you are going to be bombarded with all manner of sweet treats and tasty meats.

No two ways about it.

‘Going nuts’ with food and drink might feel good, but after 3-4 weeks? It certainly won’t look that good.

As a little antidote (the antacid to your morning after, as it were) we are doing our ‘Kickstart Detox’ packages which generally lose 7-10lbs for those who stick to the plan.

We only do the ‘Kickstart Detox’ once a year. The first month of the New Year – that’s it.

So saying ‘no’ can be pretty tricky at times…

Every winter thousands of properties suffer burst pipes and their occupiers suffer the misery and inconvenience that go with them. Burst pipes can often be avoided with just a few simple precautions.

Here are some of the things you can do to make your home less vulnerable to the cold weather.

• If you suffer a burst pipe you will need to turn the water off so make sure you know where the stop tap is and that it works.

• Repair any dripping taps.

• Check you know how to use your heating system properly – so that you can heat your home efficiently.

• Keep the heat in – ensure your home is properly insulated.

• If you intend to leave your house unoccupied for more than a few days, turn off the water supply and drain the plumbing system. If you can’t do this, consider leaving on low background heating and ask someone to pop in and check the property regularly.

• Make sure your boiler is serviced regularly.

The Christmas countdown has definitely begun in the Rowsell household. Overseas Christmas cards sent, crackers bought whilst half price, advent calendars ready to start opening; it’s all very exciting. If only it was that easy to plan the veg. Will the parsnips be decent when dug up, will the red cabbage hold ‘til the big day and most importantly will the Brussel sprouts be as good as the past three years?

The fabulous growing weather we’ve had this year has turned everything upside down at Gertie Gales. Most of our crops peaked early with our main harvest being in August. Things that often go badly have been great (for us that was peas and tomatoes) and the things that have worked well in the past have not been so good (our broccoli totally failed and the jury’s still out on the sprouts).

With sprouts the timing is fairly vital because they are the ultimate coldweather lovers and they have to sit through freezing cold nights to taste their best. So having the warmest Halloween in donkey’s years really didn’t help. The little buds started to bloom big and if allowed to continue would have needed a plate of their own on Christmas Day, rather than just snuggling up nicely next to the turkey. So lots of the early ones have already been removed and consigned to the compost and all hope rests on the smaller ones at the top. Now we want some really, really, cold, cold nights. Sorry Portishead.

Q:

My 10-year-old Labrador, Billy has always been fit and healthy but I’ve noticed over the last year that he isn’t as keen to go out for walks as he used to be. Is this just old age or should I get him checked out?

A:

At 10 years of age Billy will now be classed as geriatric, that’s the equivalent of approximately 70 in human years!

At this age dogs and cats can start to get old age problems but when an otherwise healthy, elderly dog starts slowing down and being less keen for walks arthritis is one of the things I would consider.

Recognising the symptoms of arthritis will help you get the right support for your pet.

Your pet may be less keen to go for walks, become very stiff when getting up, no longer jump up onto a favourite sleeping place and no longer being able to get in and out of the car.

If you are suspicious of arthritis you should take your pet to the vets for a health check.

As old age approaches other problems can occur too so the vet will want to make sure that there is nothing else concerning them.

If your pet is diagnosed with arthritis there are many treatments on the market to help manage their pain.

Q:

Are you able to reclaim VAT on the purchase of second-hand vehicles for the business?

A:

If it’s a car, then you’re unlikely to be able to recover the VAT – whether the invoice looks like a “proper” VAT invoice or not.

Generally, the only instance you may be able to recover the VAT on a car is if it will be used exclusively for business use, mainly as a taxi/ driving school car/ hire car or you’re a car dealer and the vehicle is stock.

If it’s a van, you may be able to recover the VAT, but one of the things to look for is that the VAT amount is identified on the invoice.

Structuring your motor running expenses and the ownership of the vehicles is so important to your business, because there

are VAT, capital allowances and income tax implications that can be quite costly if you get it wrong.
