Introduction It’s been another great month. The public response to Everything Portishead has been phenomenal and we really appreciate all the feedback. Abba tribute concert

Around Town and 12 neighbourhood awards at the regional competition, they also won a Silver Gilt in the national RHS Britain in Bloom UK Finals.

What an eventful month October has been.

The Abba tribute concert was excellent with hundreds of people turning out, in spite of the rain. The concert, organised by the Rotary Club, was great fun and many people were up and dancing on the floor throughout the event.

The Portbury Wharf Nature Reserve handover and celebration day was also a huge success.

Thankfully the rain stayed off for much of the afternoon for the hordes of people who turned out to enjoy the event and take part in the activities on offer.

We would like to say a huge CONGRATULATIONS to the Portishead in Bloom team. After picking up the exclusive Blue Ribband award, a gold award, the St Bridget Cup, the Urban Communities Trophy

It was great news for the Portishead Royal British Legion Ladies Bowling Club who won the National Top Club competition in Torquay.

The club, known as the Poppies, represented Somerset in the contest where the final rounds are played on a knockout basis by the eight leading teams in the country. It was a close call but Portishead came out on top. Well done to the whole team.

And finally, the town said goodbye to Reverend Sharon Crossman. Rev Sharon came to the Parish as a Team Vicar in 2003 but she has now moved on to pastures new and had been installed as Vicar of St John the Evangelist in Highbridge. We wish her well.

Shop locally - By Mick Brown The local business we are focusing on this month is Summit Outdoor Leisure Situated at the end of Worthington walk, Summit Outdoor Leisure is a veritable Aladdins cave for anyone interested in outdoor pursuits.

Owner and manager Mike Johnston gives me a warm welcome as he shows me around his shop, which is laid out over three levels.

A Portishead resident since 1961, Mike has travelled the world, hitchhiked around Europe and cycled to Scotland.

With no other outlet like it in the area, Mike opened the shop in July 2007 and has gone from strength to strength ever since.

Stocking leisure clothing, camping equipment, walking shoes, cycling and climbing accessories, you can find many of the leading brands such as Jack Wolfskin, Berghaus, Colombia, Lowe Alpine, Trek Mates and Regatta amongst others.

However, it is the expertise that Mike and his staff offer to his customers that is the real find here. It is the company policy to never sell anything to a customer that they do not need.

Mike is very conscious of the internet being a threat to local retail businesses and will source any item not in stock and will price match on any stocked item. That said, the business also has a comprehensive website listing many of the in shop items.

All the staff enjoy interacting with the customers, helping them to choose the right outdoor equipment whatever the time of year or the activity.

Where to Walk Ever since I was introduced to the Black Horse in our Where to Eat and Drink feature, I’ve looked for an excuse to pay another visit. So this month’s walk is the Clapton Circuit.

This is a circular walk of approximately 3 miles in length which links the village of Clapton-in-Gordano with the Avon Wildlife Trust’s Clapton Moor Nature Reserve.

To get there, turn in to Clapton Lane from the mini roundabout by the Gordano School main entrance on Clevedon Road.

As you approach the village of Clapton in Gordano, take the second road on the right and you will see the Black Horse Pub on the right. You can park carefully in Wood Lane opposite the pub entrance and it is from here your walk starts.

Walk up Wood Lane and just before the motorway bridge turn right by an old cottage.

Go under the M5 and across the first two stiles, before descending the hill towards Clapton Church where the views of Portishead and the Gordano Valley are magnificent.

The route carries on down the hill and joins the church path where you follow the signs past Clapton Court farm until you reach the nature reserve.

On entry to the reserve turn right and head towards Portishead and the mouth of the valley.

Charity Each month we select a local charity, community group or local good cause to donate 5% of any profits the magazine makes, with a minimum of £100. So far we have supported a Cancer Support group, Redcliffe Bay Toddlers and the Portishead Lifeboat.

Portishead Christmas Lights This month we have chosen the Christmas Lights.

Portishead has one of the best Christmas illuminations in the south west.

What many people do not realise, is that the festive display is organised entirely by volunteers and is funded by donations, sponsorship and fundraising activities. Members of the lights committee work tirelessly all year round to ensure that residents and visitors are not disappointed with the display.

This year members of the committee need to raise even more cash as they continue to replace the old 15 watt filament bulbs with LED bulbs.

Volunteers will be putting the lights up in High Street this month ready for the ‘switch on’ which takes place at 6.30pm on November 29th.

One of the main fundraising events for the lights, is Portishead’s Victorian Evening, a tradition which goes back more than 30 years. On Friday 10 December High Street will be closed to traffic from 6pm and the clocks in the town centre will be turned back.

The shops will stay open, people will dress in Victorian costume and community groups, charities and clubs will set up stalls selling everything from mulled wine and mince pies to holly and Christmas stockings. Fairground rides for little ones, like carousels and a small Ferris wheel will accompany hoopla, darts and spin the wheel. There will also be traditional street entertainment.

This is definitely a date to put in your diary. The future of Portishead’s Christmas lights lies in the hands of the community and your support will be very much appreciated.

Child’s Play LLADS Lads, Lasses and Dads Once a month, a Llads group meets at the Portishead Children’s Centre, in the old St Barnabas School building at West Hill.

The group has been set up by the Children’s Centre working with Portishead Churches and the idea behind it is to encourage dads and their children and even grandads, to spend quality time together.

There are plenty of mother and toddler groups, and while these are of course open to dads too, at most of these groups in our town, dads are in the minority.

Llads offers breakfast (delicious bacon butties) and asks dads and granddads to make a conscious effort to make time to play with their children. The session runs on the second Saturday of

the month from 10.30am until mid-day. There are plenty of activities to get involved in including Lego, Meccano, clay modelling and plenty of arts and crafts, toys and games.

Don’t feel shy dads, just turn up and play, it’s great fun!

All dads and granddads and their children ranging from babies to primary school age are welcome.

Portishead Youth Youth Centre Developments How it will look

At long last, after all the talk, planning permission to give Portishead Youth Centre a much needed facelift, has been granted.

The image above shows how the current building will look in the future, once the proposed work has been carried out.

A new entrance will face in to Station Road and a new office, special needs area and art block will be housed in the new construction on the Harbour Road side of the building.

here in Portishead. If a youth café is one of their choices, the refurbished youth centre with modern coffee bar, will make an ideal venue.

Full time youth worker Alan Rowe says the final phase of the redevelopment will ensure Portishead has a modern, inviting centre that will benefit not only the youth of the town, but the whole community.

Youth club currently runs at the centre on weekday evenings Monday to Thursday. The club already has lots of activities for young people ranging from a coffee bar where they can sit and chill with friends, to music, dance and sporting activities.

All this can be carried out in a safe environment, with low key supervision. The young people can lead the activities themselves and plan new ones.

It is hoped that a youth survey currently being carried out will highlight what facilities the young people want to see

Portishead Pier, whilst not the most attractive structure when compared to other piers in the county, is none the less as important a feature of the town’s coastline as the pier in nearby Clevedon. The view from it far more impressive with both the old and new Severn Bridges standing majestically in the distance joining England to Wales.

The current structure of steel piles and concrete was built in the 1950s, replacing the original wooden Victorian pier that had stood since the 1860s. This pier was designed as a breakwater to prevent mud and silt collecting at the mouth of the dock.

The Pier is a favourite spot for many an angler living locally and from further afield, where deep sea fishing is possible without leaving dry land. So fondly is the pier thought of, that when access was denied by the pier’s owners Bristol City Council, a campaign immediately began to reinstate fishing rights. People of Portishead A war hero remembered.

Everyone who knew Tommy Broom speaks of him with both respect and affection. The war hero from Portishead, who passed away earlier this year aged 96, was one of the Royal Air Force’s most celebrated fliers.

Squadron Leader Thomas John Broom, known as Tommy, was involved in 83 sorties and managed to escape the Gestapo after crashing his plane in Nazi-occupied Belgium.

He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross three times.

Joining the Royal Air Force at the age of 18 Tommy was promoted to Sergeant in 1939.

With the imminence of war in Europe, his squadron took up its battle station at Rheims.

After crashing the plane in to a pylon, Tommy and his pilot were helped by the French Resistance, to make the 1,500-mile journey through France and Spain, returning home via Gibraltar. It was Tommy’s 25th operation, after which he became a Squadron Leader.

Tommy met his late wife Annemarie in Germany and returned to Portishead in 1949 with her and his step-daughter Sigrid. He and Annemarie had a daughter, Mary-Ann, who married Greg Iles. They still live in Portishead today and have two sons, James and Robert.

You can read all about Tommy’s life in the book written by his friend since the 1950s, former Gordano School teacher, Tom Evans.

Recipe Stuffed Pork Fillet (Serves 2/3) with a Creamy Cider Sauce

For the sauce

Ingredients 1 medium sized pork fillet 1 pack smoked streaky bacon 2/3 flavoured sausages (pork & leek are good) 250ml dry cider

250ml chicken stock (made from a stock cube is fine) 1 heaped tspn wholegrain mustard 100-150ml double cream (or crème fraiche)

Method • Warm an oven to 175 C • Cut the pork fillet in half

Whilst the meat is resting in a warm place make the sauce • Use the same pan as you browned the meat stirring to add the flavour • Add the chicken stock and cider • Simmer until reduced to about 150-200ml • Stir in the mustard and cream • Bring to the bubble again for a couple of minutes and then turn off the heat Slice the meat on a diagonal and arrange on plates. Serve with fluffy mashed potato and veg and pour the sauce on top.

• Now cut again horizontally but keeping intact (so that you can open out to make a bigger piece of meat) • Put this between to pieces of cling film and flatten slightly with a meat mallet (a rolling pin will do) • Skin the sausages putting the meat into a bowl and mash with a fork • Place some of the sausage meat along one end of the pork

• Stretch the bacon with the back of a knife and wrap around the pork fillet, do this until the pork is covered • Repeat for the other half of the fillet • Gently fry the fillets in a frying pan and when browned all over, remove to an oven dish, setting aside the frying pan • Place in the oven for around 30 minutes or until cooked through

As part of our ongoing research we talked to some of the mature students in our town who said revision was one thing they struggled with. To this end, we looked in to revision techniques, of which there are many, it’s a case of finding which one works best for you.

Revision Techniques Revision Timetable – make sure you plan what you will study and when, without a plan you may find that you concentrate studying too long on one subject and run out of time for another Surroundings – always ensure you are comfortable as this will help you to concentrate Regular Breaks – this is important, regular breaks will help keep you fresh

Exam Preparation Sleep - make sure you have plenty so you are fresh and focussed on the day Remain Calm – don’t panic read through the questions slowly and read twice to ensure you understand what they are asking Time – allow sufficient time for the question – don’t spend 10 minutes on a question worth 5 points and 2 minutes on one worth 30

Index Cards – make short notes on cards, keep going over the notes and make sure you fully understand the subject Visualisations – some people find it easier to link subjects to images or acronyms i.e. bodmas (Brackets, Order, Division, Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction) Revisit – Make sure once you feel you know a subject you come back to it after a few days for a refresher Teachers – make use of your tutors/teachers, if there is anything you are unsure about talk to them, they are there to help Everyday life – try to associate the study with something you are familiar with i.e. cutting a pizza into 4 = ¼’s

How to avoid being in court rather than on a sunlounger? Again, some basic tips.

Ensure your holiday is booked with an ATOL registered provider. This will give you a safety net, in the event the company later ceases trading. Get decent insurance. Never scrimp on medical cover. If at all possible, buy on a credit card. Why? Because if you do, you then have the same rights against the card company, as you do against the holiday company.

And if it goes wrong abroad?

Find your “rep” and complain in full.

Ensure your complaints are documented and you are given a copy. Ask the Rep for answers and suggestions as to how to resolve the problem. Get their contact details and keep at them. If you incur any expenditure, keep all receipts.

And if the situation does not get resolved?

Wait until you are home, the suitcases unpacked ,the washing on the line and get some legal advice

Celebrity Spotlight Last month two of Portishead’s favourite sporting celebrities were very much in the public eye.

Imogen Cairns

Local gymnast Imogen Cairns returned home to Portishead from the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi to a hero’s welcome. Imogen won two gold medals and a team silver, which she says was beyond her wildest dreams. The golds for floor and vault are a remarkable achievement for the 21-year-old who trains at the Academy in Harbour Road. Since the Beijing Olympics, she has undergone two serious ankle operations which at one time put her future in the sport in doubt.

Well done Imogen, the whole town is proud of you!

On a different note, the town’s favourite footballing personality Bobby Gould launched his new autobiography 24 Carat Gould. The sportsman who played for numerous clubs ranging from Arsenal to both the Bristol clubs, went on to become manager of many more, in addition to becoming a popular tv sports presenter. SCUFFS Since starting this magazine I have had the opportunity and privilege to meet many people in Portishead and the surrounding areas.

This month I met Jack James and I thought it would be an ideal time to talk about his achievements and success.

As most people are aware businesses have suffered in recent years and it is great to hear about businesses which are thriving in these times, especially run by local people.

Jack’s parents have been running Tickenham Garage for some time and Jack says he always knew he wanted to become a mechanic. He started to work with his dad as an apprentice at the age of 14. He

Q: I’m coming to the end of my third year of business as a sole trader, and understand I can reduce my tax liability by investing in a new van and some equipment before my accounting year end. Can you explain further?

Q: I have recently started to trade as a selfemployed music tutor and in order to do this I had to gain a teaching qualification. Can I deduct the cost of the training course and exams in my first set of accounts even though the expense was incurred before I started trading?

By purchasing equipment for your business before the end of your accounting period, you can potentially receive a reduction in tax due.

The amount will depend on whether you are a higher rate tax payer (currently 40%), or a basic rate taxpayer (20%). You will also receive relief against National Insurance Class 4.

Under current rules, the majority of small businesses are able to claim a 100% Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) on the first £100,000 of expenditure on most types of plant and machinery in the current tax year. This allowance excludes cars but does include vans. Hence, assuming you spend less that £100,000, you will be able to reduce your profits for tax by an amount equal to that spent.

You should also be aware the new government recently proposed a reduction in the Annual Investment Allowance. From April 2012, the maximum amount will reduce to £25,000.

When considering the cost of professional qualifications and courses, the Revenue will consider whether or not the claimant was learning new skills or merely updating existing ones. Where the training is undertaken merely to update the current expertise and skills of the individual, this will usually be deductible from the business profits, provided it is incurred wholly and exclusively for the purpose of the trade.

However, where the cost relates to new expertise or knowledge, it cannot be deducted from business profits. There are instances where the distinction is not clear and there have been recent court cases concerning this area. If you are uncertain whether or not you should be claiming the cost of training courses or qualifications, contact your local TaxAssist Accountant for further advice.

Drama School Cheryl Rowlands School of Drama in Portishead is currently recruiting new members to take part in the school’s forthcoming production of Carry On Screaming.

Professional actress Cheryl started the drama school in 1998 with one pupil. Twelve years on, many hundreds of pupils have gone through her door, resulting in lavish shows, Christmas pantomimes, performances at schools and care homes in the community and various appearances at events ranging from Carnival to the Portishead Victorian Evening.

In addition, pupils from the school have been selected for professional television work in programmes such as Skins, Casualty and Being Human, they have also appeared in shows at the Bristol Hippodrome.

The actress and writer personally teaches classes at Portishead’s Wesley Centre in High Street. Classes are open to any child who wants the opportunity to ‘tread the boards’.

Cheryl said: “Our Drama classes have the emphasis placed on fun, enthusiasm and teamwork and it is effort and perseverance that are rewarded, rather than a natural talent for stage work There is no audition process, everyone is welcome regardless of ability, the only requirement is that pupils are keen, hard working and committed to their Drama activities.”

Those who show a natural ability are encouraged to progress through the School’s In-House Theatrical Agency.

Cheryl added: “Our ethos has proven that even the shyest of children can develop confidence both in front of an audience and in their

Money Matters – Advertising Feature People often ask my advice about business and personal banking - which company is the best and what account they should choose.

As I have not investigated every bank’s options I am not qualified to answer this question, however I am happy to share my personal experiences.

I have banked with HSBC for many years. They offered me 18 months free banking when I first set up my business and this facility allowed me to establish the company, without having to worry about any additional costs.

I was concerned that when the free banking period ended I would have ‘shop around’ for a new option, something I was not looking forward to.

I have since found out that with the different tariffs available and depending on how I choose to operate my account I can still benefit from free banking I have always had a good relationship with the business specialist, Tim Harvey, at HSBC. Unlike some banks, he is based at the local branch and I can see him, face to face whenever I need to.

Saving money is always good, but let’s not forget the saying “you get what you pay for”. The service I have received from my bank has been excellent.

The HSBC internet banking service is award winning, it’s a service that I find very easy to use, just like their telephone banking.

As I have already mentioned, these are personal views and experiences. I cannot speak of any other branch, but I can say that I have been extremely happy with the service provided by my Portishead branch.

Catherine aged 8 wrote to us asking why her goldfish died after only a couple of weeks. Her second goldfish died two or three weeks later and she wondered if it could be that she overfed her fish.

We were sorry to hear about the misfortune with your goldfish keeping. It is very upsetting when a pet dies. Providing the correct environment for your goldfish can be a little tricky, so here are a few tips from the team at Vale Vets.

Goldfish need an aquarium as large as possible, preferably 60 x 30 x 30cm which would be adequate for two large or three small fish. Young fish will grow quickly, so take this into consideration when choosing a tank.

Remember that Goldfish have to swim in their own toilet – so make sure you

flush it regularly! At least 3 times a week you need to scoop out approximately half of the water in the tank and replace it with room temperature clean tap water Never leave your fish tank to get really murky and dirty and then do a complete water change – this is very stressful to the fish and they may die. There are water test kits that you can get from a good ‘Aquacentre’ to check the quality of the water in your tank.

Goldfish eat continuously; they digest what they need and excrete the rest. It is easy to overfeed them and

spoil the water quality in your tank in the process. Tiny amounts of a good quality fish flake 2-3 times a day is sufficient – it is surprising how little they need.

Goldfish can be fascinating pets; they will recognise you and come to say ‘hello’ when you are near; they are good ‘stress busters’ and a beautifully kept tank will brighten any room.

Sue Anderson writes about winter in your garden Last year the winter was very cold and I lost a few well establish plants, so after some research I now have some tips on how to help your plants survive the winter.

I always leave this year’s growth on my plants throughout the cold season, it helps them by keeping the worst of the frost off the crown, especially with plants like penstemens, hardy fuchsias and grasses like miscanthus major.

Although the winter garden looks less tidy, it gives the plants a fighting chance of survival and the miscanthus looks stunning with the frost on the old flower heads.

For very delicate plants like tree ferns, garden fleece is a good buy, not too expensive but will keep most of the frost from damaging your precious plants.

If you do not like the look of white fleece around your garden you can always cover the crown with straw but do remember if we have a lot of rain this can get soaked and freeze in a hard frost, so you will need to keep checking and change the straw if it becomes water logged.

The CRZ is based on the rather bland Honda Insight with its 1.5-litre,four-cylinder petrol engine combined with Honda’s IMA (integrated motor assist) system. This combined system produces a modest 112bhp and 174nm of torque whilst keeping the CO2 emissions to 117g/km but unlike the insight runs with a six speed manual gearbox which is rare for a hybrid!

There are three models to choose from and each will give you a combined fuel economy of 56.5mpg, a top speed of 124Mph and a 0-62mph in around 10 seconds.

The CRZ was inspired by Honda’s classic CRX. This includes the stumpy flat backed rear end, short wheel base and 2+2 seating arrangement but bringing it into the 21st century it has flowing lines, stylish lights, air con and plenty of safety features.

The chassis and suspension does give you a responsive feel with very little body roll, although some of the driver feeling is taken away by the VSA (vehicle stability assist) which can be switched off.

There is a three mode drive system on the dash : Sport, Normal and Econ, with the sport giving you a bit more responsiveness when you need (or want) it and

After test driving the CRZ, it felt reasonably smooth and well planted on the road for a smallish car. When put in sport mode the throttle sharpens up making the battery assist feel like a small turbo charger and the front wheels receive a bit more torque, thus making the acceleration and the cornering a lot more enjoyable. The exhaust note in sports mode, when combined with the handling and performance leaves you with a little grin on your face!

Creche the Wedding When you’re planning a wedding the list of things to plan is endless: dress, church, reception, honeymoon, flowers.

However, what is a long but enjoyable day for grownups can become a little less interesting for young ones. This in turn can put pressure on parents to either leave early or miss out on part of the day to occupy their children.

Lois Miller, a dance instructor by day, started her business Creche the Wedding, after listening to a friend complaining that keeping her children occupied had stopped her relaxing and enjoying much of her sister’s wedding day. Lois, with the help of her own sister who has childcare qualifications and experience, set up Creche the Wedding to offer mobile childcare at events like weddings.

With a team of CRB checked, experienced childcare staff, they now offer a range of activities for children, tailored to the clients’ specific requirements. All ages are catered for from new born to 12 years and activities range from arts and crafts to mini bouncy castles with supervision, treasure hunts to WII games and wedding themed games to balloon releases.

Lois said: “It’s great for us because no two events are the same. We get to meet a lot of people, listen to their needs and organise activities to suit every need.”
