Rotakids raise money

Annual Swimathon

T

he countdown to Portishead Rotary Club’s annual swimathon has begun.

Members of the club were joined by BBC Bristol TV and radio personality Jemma Cooper and staff from Parish Wharf Leisure Centre, where the event takes place, to highlight the launch of one of the biggest fundraising events on the town’s calendar.

Now in its 19th year Rotary is hoping that, as in the past, around 80 teams will join them for the event on Saturday April 25 2015 starting at 1.30pm.

for their own projects as well as selected Rotary charities, which for this year are the RNLI Portishead Boat House appeal and St Peter’s Hospice.

otaKids at Trinity Primary School in Portishead raised £200 for the End Polio Now campaign by selling items they had made during a money themed week at school.

Rotakids is the most junior part of the Rotary family, with the objective to help build children’s self-esteem by introducing the Rotary concepts of service, understanding and citizenship.

A pledge was made in 1985 to rid the world of Polio and Rotary International in partnership with the World Health Organisation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has brought down the numbers by 99 per cent.

Pupils at Trinity Primary School who signed up to Rotakids work alongside the local Rotary Club to work on projects that help make a difference in the local community and further afield.

Visit Laskett Gardens P

ortishead and District Horticultural Society invites members of the local community to join them on a coach outing to The Laskett Gardens on May 14.

The Laskett Gardens in Herefordshire are one of the largest private formal gardens to be created in England since 1945. Over almost four decades the historian, Sir Roy Strong, and his late wife, the designer Dr Julia Trevelyan Oman, transformed a four acre field into a series of stunning garden rooms, vistas, ascents and descents. The trip will also include a visit to Kentchuch Court Gardens where a two course lunch will be included and a tour of the house is a further option. wimmers from High Down Junior School were crowned champions at the North Somerset Schools Swimming Gala at Hutton Moor.

Competing against 31 other primary schools, the team of year five and year six pupils beat off stiff competition to be named overall winners.

Spring Show Saturday March 14 12.30pm Folk Hall, High Street, Portishead

on’t miss the Portishead and District Horticultural Society’s Annual Spring Show which takes place at the Folk Hall in Portishead High Street on Saturday March 14 from 12.30-5pm.

The show marks the beginning of the gardening year for many, but keen gardeners have already been busy preparing daffodils, tulips, crocus and all the traditional spring flowers for the show. As well as the traditional flowers, plants and vegetables the show has sections covering photography, wine and cookery, along with special children’s classes which include flower arrangements,

handwriting, cake making and colouring.

There is still time to enter; schedules are available from many

colour and browse the exhibits.

Refreshments will also be available.

Portishead Girl Guide leader returns from overseas trip

Y

oungsters in Portishead have been hearing about the experiences of a local Girl Guide leader in Sri Lanka.

25-year-old Lindsey Howells, from Redliffe Bay, was one of six young women from the UK chosen to spend three weeks in Sri Lanka, to promote Girl Guiding and help recruit new members and leaders. This was part of an ongoing international scheme known as the G.O.L.D. project - Guiding Overseas Linked with Development. Lindsay and her teammates spoke of the warm welcome they received in Sri Lanka, and the wonderful hospitality of the Sri Lankan Guide leaders who made them feel at home and part of the worldwide Guiding family.

At a recent meeting of Redcliffe Bay Rangers, Lindsay talked about the opportunities for challenge, adventure and personal development Girl Guiding can offer, in the UK and all over the world.

Move for Town Band

ortishead Town Band is on the move and weekly rehearsals will now be taking place at the Wesley Centre in Ferndale Road, adjacent to the High Street Methodist Church. The weekly practice sessions will take place on Tuesdays from 7-45 to 9-45pm.

Band spokesman Nigel Woods said: “Unfortunately the move means we will lose our musical director Dr Fabien Huss as he has a commitment with the Cheddar Male Voice Choir on Tuesdays, but we are extremely fortunate that for the interim period we have secured the services of Dilly Taylor who is an ex-professional trumpet player and for several years a music teacher in the area.”

Portishead Town Band provides an opportunity for musicians to join a small but committed group who are looking forward to the new challenges of building a fresh repertoire of music for forthcoming engagements.”

Charity Abseil

community abseil in Portishead is expected to have raised more than £10,000 for charity.

50 people aged from 11 to 81, abseiled 100 ft down the St Peter’s Church tower last month to raise money for Christian Aid’s Ebola appeal.

Each participant had a target of £200 but many have more than doubled the target set them.

Three members of the St Peter’s clergy took part in the challenge; Rev Jeremy Putnam was one of the last volunteers of the day to lower himself down the side of the historical building, along with his daughter Rebekah and Portishead Pilgrim Rev Tina Hodgett. Dave Francis, a leader from Gordano Valley Church was also among the participants.

Bethan Fathins, 11 was the youngest to take part and retired vicar, Colin Duncan, was the oldest.

A church spokesman said: “It was a vibrant, busy, successful day.

The sponsorship is still coming in and it looks as though the overall target of £10,000 will be exceeded.”

The churchyard was crowded throughout the day and hot drinks and cakes were served in the church.

A number of teddies attached to parachutes also took part in the event to help raise funds.

The money from the event will go to help the work being carried out by Christian Aid’s partners to combat Ebola in West Africa, including in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.

Month two of training is going well, although I didn’t realise quite how difficult it would be to fit it all in when I work six days a week and have two children under six who need all my time when I’m not in the office.

I am doing back to back spin classes at Fox Cycling and managed 60 miles last night.

My new bike is great and I can now get out on the road too.

fter five years of trading, Mad Harry’s will be closing the doors on its High Street shop on Saturday March 14.

Owners Dave and Margaret Tansley said: “We are very sad to close up but running the shop is no longer a viable option. If we are going to survive we need to restructure the business.”

What do shoes, the NHS and coffee have in common?

et’s start with shoes and the NHS. We are all very aware of the difficult financial decisions that face the NHS at the moment.

However did you know that by not looking after our feet, and in particular the feet of your children, we are increasing that burden? There are alarmingly increasing numbers of people being referred to podiatrists for problems caused by wearing ill-fitting and/or inappropriate footwear.

Sadly the age of those suffering is getting

Making the best of family holidays

W

ith over 25 years of booking family holidays and as a mother of two little ones myself, I’m often asked for advice on how to make the most out of trips with children.

With early booking discounts still available in the marketplace, now is the time to get your family holiday finalised. Booking too late often means that room types and locations are limited and a family can end up ‘making do’ with a destination rather than getting the most out of their break including crèche and kids club availability.

In terms of hotels with a crèche or kids club, these are generally improving, with hoteliers keen to tap into a growing trend but here are a few of my favourites; For a long haul break, Beaches Resorts really have a great range of family childcare options in the Caribbean. For those wanting a shorter flight some of my favourite family hotels include the Sani Resort in Halkidiki, The Pinecliff Residences at the Sheraton Algarve or the Abama in Tenerife, all of which have really focussed on that attention to detail when looking after your children, staying away from the

mass market approach which can put some families off certain suppliers. These resorts also give you the flexibility to stay in villas on site which may suit larger families.

For those of you with a passion for water sports and activity based family holidays, there are some great tour operators in the market with Mark Warner, Neilson Beach Clubs and Sunsail amongst my favourites.

Once again these companies have really focussed on the quality and range of their childcare product.

If you’re looking to catch some late family Easter skiing, Esprit provide excellent childcare to make skiing with children simple and have some great offers available, although it’s essential to pick the right resort.

Finally cruise holidays are becoming a great option for families with companies such as Royal Caribbean offering all inclusive breaks from as little as £799pp* including morning until late childcare with accredited childcare professionals. With so many activities on board there is no easier way to travel with children.

After being crowned North Somerset Champions in a recent football tournament, the High Down girls’ team travelled to Bridgwater College to take part in the next round of the National Competition Framework for Girls Football.

One draw and four wins put High Down at the top of the group and secured a place in the semis. A two-one win, took the girls through to the final, which after a tough game was clinched

by High Down after going to a penalty shoot out.

The High Down year six boys team, who had also been previously crowned North Somerset Champions, went through to the semi-finals of the regional contest after placing second in their group. They went head to head with Midsomer Norton School resulting in a 2-0 victory, which meant a spot in the final. The boys

won the 2-0, making them the regional champions and giving High Down a double celebration.

Good news for Gordano Dance Academy D

ancers from Gordano School in Portishead have qualified for the second round of The Great Big Dance Off, a national dance competition searching for the best school dance troupe in the country.

The mixed group of 16 dancers filmed and submitted their entry, based upon the popular book The Time Travellers Wife, just before Christmas.

The second round of the competition takes place at the Wyvern Theatre in Swindon on March 24 where they will go head to head with other qualifying

Gordano won The Great Big Dance Off competition in 2014, beating 250 other schools, and the students are keen to defend their title this year. The dancers, who are from school years 8-13, have a wide range of skills which will be judged during their performances in March. Group performance, dramatic impact, originality of performance and use of props are amongst the judging criteria for the next round.

School choir heads for Songs of Praise

Portishead school choir has made it to the finals of the BBC Songs of Praise Junior School Choir of the Year contest.

St Peter’s Primary School’s Majors Choir is one of only six junior school choirs in the country chosen to take part in the finals of the national contest at Nottingham’s Albert Hall this month.

To enter, the choir, made up of pupils aged eight to 11, conducted by key stage one leader Catrin Battista and accompanied by year six teacher Jemima Napier, recorded two songs which were sent off for judging.

Reaching the finals of this prestigious competition is the second major achievement for the choir in recent months. In December the Majors won the Bristol School Choir of the Year award, run by The Bristol Old Vic and as champions of this event they performed in front of a full house at the Old Vic on the opening night of Swallows and Amazons.

Wajdja, a romantic comedy and the first Saudi Arabian feature film to be directed by a woman, will be screened by Portishead Film on Friday March 6.

Shot in the suburbs of Riyadh, it tells the story of a 10-year-old girl who wants to buy a green bicycle to race against her friend Abdullah. Wadjda shouldn’t want a bike, and she shouldn’t, as a girl on the edge of puberty, really be playing with Abdullah.

But she does, cheerfully and with cursory regard for mum’s fretting or the disapproval of her staunchly traditionalist teacher.

Watch out for thieves P

olice are asking people living in Portishead to call immediately if they notice any suspicious behaviour after a spate of thefts in the town.

Thieves stole a backpack containing a Dell laptop and paperwork from a car in Curlew Place on the night of February 10. The paperwork was later found in a nearby garden. During the early hours of Wednesday February 11, thieves searched a car in Lundy Gate and another in Kingfisher Road, although nothing was reported missing from the vehicles.

A garage in Kingfisher Road was broken into at around the same time and two bicycles were stolen, a blue and white Trek 6300 and a green Trek 1.5.

Sometime between 9am and 3pm on the Wednesday thieves stole cash and a satnav from a car parked in Robin Place.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Gavin O’Reilly said: “If you’re woken by an alarm, security lights, barking dogs, breaking glass or other suspicious noises, please call us straight away on 101. If you’ve looked out and spotted someone running away or behaving suspiciously, call 999.

While it’s not clear how the thieves got into the cars, as no damage was caused, it’s always important to make sure you have locked your car and set the alarm, even in a lower crime area like ours.”

Social phobia was first recognised as a mental health condition in 1980.

rance is a natural state that our brain finds itself in approximately every 6-7 minutes. The brain needs to be in this state often to be able to process events and experiences that are happening around us on every sensory level.

When we go into trance on the hypnotherapy couch, this experience is called REM and is very similar to a deep relaxation. Your body feels comfortably heavy, but your mind feels comfortably light. You will notice a detachment from the everyday thoughts and it’s similar to the drifting, floaty feeling you have just before you wake up in the morning, you are not quite awake, but not quite asleep.

This state is hugely beneficial, as your brain is at its optimum resting point and also at its optimum productivity. So without you even realising it, any suggestions given at this time, that are positive and solution focused, will be taken on board by your brain and will be put in to an action plan by you as you return to your daily tasks.

Hypnotherapy can help with: Insomnia, easing stress, lifting depression, phobias, addiction, weight control, sports motivation, IBS, self-confidence, OCD and many other issues.

Amalgam - Silver-Coloured Dental Fillings: Dental amalgam is made from a combination of metals and is often described as “silver-coloured” fillings. Amalgam hardens quickly so it is useful in areas that are difficult to keep dry during placement, such as below the gum line. One disadvantage of amalgam is that these types of fillings are not natural looking.

Exercise of the Month: Single-Arm Cable Crossover

By Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym Professor Every month top personal trainer Matt Bemebridge, AKA Gym Professor, provides advice for those who work out. This month he talks you through the single-arm cable crossover.

When working the chest muscles (pectoralis major), many exercises only offer a partial range-of-motion for the muscle itself.

Full-contraction of the chest is achieved when the arm’s drawn forward and across the body.

Some exercises where you may come forward and across the body, such as flyes, pec dec and cable crossover, still only bring your arm partially across your body and do not therefore fully-contract the chest muscles. So, how do we achieve fullcontraction? We perform a crossover with one arm at a time.

Many gyms are now equipped with a Dual Adjustable Pulley or similar. Adjust the cable column height so that it is level with your outstretched arm position, just below shoulder height.

The tea was organised by Contact the Elderly, a project that brings together older people who live alone, for Sunday afternoon tea.

Sundays can be one of the loneliest days for people living alone and so Contact the Elderly works to help combat that.

Volunteer Rachel Nash, who co-ordinates Contact the Elderly in Portishead, liaises with volunteer hosts who invite members of the group to their homes for a cuppa and a slice of cake a couple of times a year.

You’re quite right to make the link between the dirty teeth and the smell. The bacteria around diseased teeth are producing these nasty odours. The teeth are dirty because they are covered in a combination of plaque and tartar.

Whilst dental chews can play a role in maintaining healthy teeth and gums their impact is only marginal. We’ve all seen how quickly some dogs eat them- in some cases they hardly touch the teeth! Well done for reaching for the tooth brush, this is the gold standard for dental care but whilst you can brush off plaque you cannot remove the tartar.

What your dog really needs is to have the tartar removed before the benefits of tooth brushing can be realised, which can only be done effectively with an ultrasonic scaler or specialised hand scalers.

In summary, don’t put up with the smell for your sake and theirs, get your dog examined by a vet and booked in for dental treatment. During March Vale Vets is offering 10% off dental procedures booked in within a month of a vet recommending

Gordano Living readers ever since they were first allocated a plot at Gertie Gales allotments in North Weston several years ago.

kay, that’s enough cold weather for now and I insist the lovely spring days hurry up and arrive. We love our allotment and are missing it big time. Apart from a quick trip up for leeks, the closest we’ve been is when we drive past on our way to Clevedon and try and guess how many cars will be at Gertie’s. Very few so far, but there’s always one or two who are much braver (or dafter?) allotmenteers than we are.

So it’s still all about planning and getting ready. I try hard not to succumb to internet searches to help me as “growing vegetables” gives 94,500,000 results on Google which might take a while to get through. I try to stick to one trusted book and the weekly advice of Alan Titchmarch.

This being the first full year of the new greenhouse we’re a little uncertain as to when we should start sowing our seeds.

Alan says we can start the leeks and onions now but given we’re dropping the leeks, the onions will have to go it alone. Although that’s not quite true as my other trusted friend, Adrienne from Woman’s Weekly, tells me I can start my bell peppers as they need a long time to ripen. So once this is written it’s off to the greenhouse and time to get the hands dirty again.

Yay! The next job will be to get a book about greenhouse growing, one of the many things that Santa forgot to bring. This gives a mere 67,800,000 results on Google. Fingers crossed

s your bathroom looking a little exhausted? Are you losing the battle against the mould, is the limescale scaling new heights and the shower door difficult to see through?

There is no denying that a completely new bathroom is a big job, but it doesn’t have to be a huge headache, especially if you engage the services of a bathroom professional who understands the design and products from an early stage.

The key is to have a good design that works practically and maximises use of the space available.

Think about what you really need your bathroom to do for you.

Do you need more storage? Better lighting? Would a smaller or larger basin be beneficial?

arch can be unpredictable but hopefully we are now in to the warmer spring weather and we can really get gardening. Be careful though as frosts can still be a hazard, keep vulnerable plants protected at night if frost is likely.

It is now time to weed and dig over your borders incorporating as much organic matter as you can. Mulch the soil once you have done the work and remove moss and weeds from paths, patios and driveways. s the gardens come back to life, it’s time to get the mowers going, but machines are like human beings, they need exercise and looking after, the last thing they need is to be idle in the shed over the winter. Many of the problems we see in the workshop can be prevented and here are a few things you can do to keep you machines working.

1) If you have any fuel left from last year don’t be tempted to use it. It will go stale and this in turn can lead to carburettor problems.

2) Before starting your machine remember to check the engine oil, low oil levels can lead to fatal damage to your engine.

3)Take care to ensure that you only use clean fuel. A cheap filter funnel will prevent small debris getting into your fuel system. Even the smallest piece of grass can cause big problems.

4) Finally keep your mower clean. Brush it off after use and clean under the deck. Grass is full of moisture and will cause rusting very quickly.

I have been in business for several years now as a sole trader and it seems that every year my tax bill keeps going up and up. Is there anything I can do to save tax?

A:

It sounds like you could look at converting your business to a Limited Company. Depending on your own circumstances, these can significantly reduce the amount of tax you have to pay.

Whilst there is slightly more work involved in preparing your tax return, operating via a Limited Company can allow you to grow your business without worrying about what tax rate you will pay as all small companies only pay 20% Corporation tax. The tax is also only paid once a year, nine months after the company’s year end, so you can plan your cash flow better.

I am newly self-employed and have been rather unorganised this year.

I just managed to get my 2013/14 tax return filed online on 31st January 2015, but I didn’t have enough cash put aside for my tax bill. What are the implications of paying my tax late?

A:

You will have interest to pay on anything you owe until HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) receives your payment.

Furthermore, after a delay of 30 days, late payment penalties at 5% of the tax you owe will begin to apply. Additional late payment penalties will be added if the delay exceeds six months.

Please note, if you also registered for self assessment late (i.e. after 5th October 2014), you may also incur a Failure to Notify penalty.

This will be 5% of any tax outstanding on 31st January 2014.
