Army cadets receive award

hree members of the Army Cadet Force based in Nailsea have been presented with their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award certificates.

Cadet Sergeant Louis Lewton and Cadet Corporal’s James Mackenzie– Smith and Alex Butt, who all live in Backwell, have been working hard over the past 12 months to complete the four sections of their award.

All members of the Army Cadet Force are encouraged to sign up for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award when they reach the age of 14.

There are three levels of Award: Bronze, Silver and Gold. For each level you need to complete four sections: Volunteering; Physical; Skills; and Expedition. To achieve a Gold Award, you also have to complete a residential section.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is one of the world’s most popular development programmes for young people aged 14-25. The

DofE Award includes four categories of highly practical, cultural and adventurous activities.

Most of these are cross-related with the ACF activities covered in their own progressive achievement syllabus. So whilst you’re training for first aid, drill, target shooting and expeditions, you’re also working towards your DofE Award. The Awards are well regarded and recognised by universities and employers.

Nailsea Army Cadet Force has spaces for new recruits, both male and female. Young people can join as long as they are in school year eight or above. The unit also has adult positions available for uniformed instructors and civilian assistants.

The ACF in Nailsea meets every Tuesday and Thursday evening, from 7.30pm, at their purpose built headquarters at Greenfield Crescent Park, Nailsea.

Charity Walks this year.

The Nailsea Charity Walks attract more than 300 people who will run, walk or stroll for charity across the Nailsea countryside on Sunday, June 22.

Nailsea Charity Walks is a celebratory fundraiser organised by the Nailsea and Backwell Rotary Club and sponsored by Waitrose.

John Oldham, chairman of trustees, was the first person to sign up for the walk on behalf of Crossroads Care and he said: “The walk is a great opportunity to get fit and support local carers this summer so I urge lots of our supporters, carers and anyone who enjoys walking to have a go.”

Walkers will have the choice of three routes – a 5Km, which is perfect for families and suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs, a 10Km for those who relish going off road, and a 20Km challenge across country with gates and stiles.

Rachel Turner, of Waitrose, said: “Having three walks means that all ages can enjoy walking through our

wonderful countryside whilst raising money for local worthwhile causes.”

Walkers meet at The Scotch Horn Centre, Nailsea, from 9.15am onwards, with runners starting a bit earlier.

Community News Join the Nailsea Moose

A

fraternity in Nailsea is looking for people to join them. Nailsea Moose, which is part of Moose GB, meets every month (apart from August) at the Scotch Horn Centre.

Moose GB is part of a fraternal family that encompasses the United States, Canada and Bermuda. There are fortyfive chartered clubs active throughout England and Wales and almost 1.8 million men and women have found reasons to join the Family Fraternity.

Mark Boulton, of the Nailsea Fraternity, said: “Despite what you may have heard, we don’t wear funny hats or give secret handshakes.

“We believe in caring and sharing within our community and we want to share Moose with you.

“Moose Lodges provide a hub for social interaction, a place for friends and fellowship to enjoy all the benefits a Lodge or club has to offer.

Moose plays a very full part in the life of the communities in which it exists”.

Moose runs many fundraising events for various worthy causes, a diary of social events and generally have fun.

The men and women of Moose look after the elderly and provide for our youth by running vocational guidance programmes.

Community News High Street shop is setting for short film

A

shop in Nailsea welcomed an award winning film company from Bristol to its door.

Beautiful at 132 High Street, Nailsea, was the setting for part of a short film Three Tree Productions are currently filming for the Encounters Film Festival.

And former Nailsea School pupil Emily Miller, a company director at Three Tree Productions, was behind the move.

The film is about a little girl who enters a dance

Beautiful owner Sandi MacDonald said: “I knew Emily as a customer and I was only too happy to help.

“I thought the story was great and it fitted in really well with the shop, with someone passing the shop window and seeing something they like.”

It’s not the first time Sandi and Beautiful have been involved in the entertainment business. Sandi, who has lived in Nailsea for 33 years, supplied the costumes for the Dancing on Ice Show with Kieran Bracken at the Hand Stadium in Clevedon.

The clothing and fashion shop has recently had a makeover and is moving into the home ware and furniture area more, but will still sell the quirky, unique stuff as usual.

The Rotary Round Walk ‘n’ Wheel

ailsea now has a walk that anybody can enjoy and the name says it all with the Rotary Round Walk and Wheel.

After much detailed planning the launch of the route took place last month and was supported by many local people both young and old, and especially local walking groups and wheelchair users.

The starting tape was cut by Donna Littleton of Nailsea who completed the walk in her powered wheelchair with husband Alan and their Grandson River.

Throughout the course of the afternoon the Searl Knot Civil War Battle Re-enactment Group gave demonstrations of weaponry and fighting tactics together with a live musket display.

Many of the spectators became recruits for the afternoon and joined the march back to their encampment where there were demonstrations of medieval life.

Music was provided by rock trio 4zaCrowd followed by two sets from the Twice Dailies who played a selelection of Adge Cutler songs leaving the crowd asking for more.

The afternoon’s entertainment was completed with a set from singer guitarist Robin Schaefer.

The May Fair is organised by 2nd Nailsea Scouts and as well as being the first major community event in the year is the major fund raising effort for the Scout Group. Early figures indicate that they have raised somewhere in the region of £3,600 for the Group, which will be used to help maintain the HQ and replace some worn out equipment.

The event also provided fund raising opportunities for other local charities who take part.

The event organisers would like to thank everyone who helped set up the event including 1st Nailsea Scouts for providing their marquee, everybody who turned up on the day to enjoy the event, Nailsea Town Council for their help and support, Sustrans and James Rogers Funfair, without who’s generosity and support we could not run the event.

Rotarians and partners heard her explain about her role and she fielded a wide range of questions from the audience.

Community News Lions Ladies Fashion Show raises over £2,000 for charity

A

fashion show organised

by Nailsea Lions Ladies has raised £2,150 for charity.

The proceeds of the evening will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust and the Alzheimer’s Society.

An evening of glitz and glamour at the Cadbury House Hotel was enjoyed by more than 200 ladies.

The show featured clothes from the manufacturers who supply famous High Street stores, and included the very latest fashions. The garments were modelled by the Lions Ladies, and afterwards the ones displayed plus many more were available at hugely discounted prices.

Lion President Pam Hunt thanked the audience for their generous support, and also the ladies who had bravely modelled the clothes.

Outstanding Ofsted for Junior School

ackwell Junior School has been celebrating after receiving an outstanding Ofsted rating, with headteacher Alex Bell saying that the whole school is ‘absolutely delighted’ with the result.

The report highlighted the outstanding achievement throughout the school with pupils of all levels of ability making excellent progress in reading, writing and mathematics.

Inspectors stated: “All the teaching that inspectors observed was, without exception, exciting, interesting and engaging.

“Pupils’ attitudes to learning are exemplary because the pupils find it

inspiring. Pupils behave in a way that is both very courteous and respectful.

“Since the previous inspection, the headteacher has successfully focused on taking teaching to the highest level.”

Headteacher Alex Bell said: “We all work extremely hard to ensure the children have the best possible experience here. It’s great to have this recognised by Ofsted.

Backwell Junior School’s Summer Fair takes place on Saturday, June 14 from noon and will feature stalls, refreshments, inflatables and much more.

The popular vibrant local club, with members ranging in age from under 50 to over 90, provides an evening of Social Sequence Dancing at the WI Hall, Backwell every Tuesday from 8pm-10.15pm with emphasis on the well known and popular dances such as the Mayfair Quickstep, Melody Foxtrot, Rumba One, Square Tango, Saunter Together, Waltz Catherine plus many others.

The aim is to provide social dancing in a friendly atmosphere to good music with enjoyment being high on the agenda. The element of fun and gentle exercise is an added bonus.

The club will also be running another beginners course which will start on Tuesday, September 23, from 7-8pm and run for eight weeks at a cost of £3 per person per week.

This is the ideal opportunity to try sequence dancing or to revive an interest if you used to go dancing in the past.

Neighbourhood plan for Backwell

he Neighbourhood Plan for Backwell has been submitted by the town’s Parish Council.

Residents of the town were invited to have their say on the proposals on a Draft Neighbourhood Plan for Backwell up to 2026, entitled Backwell Future, being developed by the parish council. Feedback was received from more than 500 visitors on housing and business development, the designation of local green space and other key policies.

The plan is the first of its kind in North Somerset and Director of development and environment at North Somerset Council, David Turner, said: “We have been pleased to support the Backwell team in producing the plan and have been impressed by their dedication and commitment to produce a quality document. It shows how local communities can have a greater role in shaping development in their local area.”

The council will now check that

the correct paperwork has been submitted before arranging a minimum six week period for people to have their say on the plan.

The plans will go to an independent examiner and if they meet the conditions set out in neighbourhood planning regulations, a referendum will be held for local residents and if more than 50% of people vote in favour of the plan it will become the main planning guidance for development in Backwell.

Michelin star chef demonstrations at festival

wo of the South West’s best culinary experts and Michelin star chefs, Josh Eggleton and Sam Moody, will be at this year’s Backwell Festival on Saturday, July 12.

Josh Eggleton recently competed on BBC 2’s Great British Menu while Sam Moody, awarded a Michelin star in 2012, is well known for championing the fantastic flavours of simple, natural food.

Together with a third Michelin star chef, Thornbury’s Romy Gill, who was recently nominated for the Asian Woman of the Year award, they will

Annual Donkey Derby T

he annual Donkey Derby will be taking place on Backwell School Playing Fields on Sunday, June 22.

It will be the 29th Donkey Derby in the town and the donkeys will be back for the eight donkey races for young riders as well as the space hopper “horses” once again, this time on an obstacle course.

There will be wide a variety of entertainments and stalls as well as BBQ lunches, the Adele Stitch Dancers, Backwell Scout Group entertainment and much more.

Try your skill at the coconut shy, bouncy castle, greasy pole, crockery smash, crash-a-can, plant

stall, football shoot-out, tombolas, wine raffle and soak-a-scout.

Free programmes with more information will be coming through the doors of Backwell during June so watch out for them. Please note that the only dogs allowed at the venue will be guide dogs.

There will be fun for all the family and it all takes place from 12.30-3.30pm, with the first race starting at 1pm.

A

Portishead Carnival is back!

fter a year’s brweak Portishead Carnival takes place on Saturday, June 14 and organisers are hoping the whole community will be out in force to support it.

The Carnival is a spectacular procession of floats, marching bands and walking groups that winds its way from the Lake Grounds through the High Street.

Whether you enter a float, join the fancy dress walking procession, line the streets to cheer on the street parade or visit the carnival field to enjoy the fun of the fair, stalls and live music, event organisers Jemma and Wendy urge everyone to take part in some way.

Carnival programmes priced £2.50 each are on sale now in many of the local shops and volunteers will also be selling them door to door, so do look out for them.

The programmes, which are full of information about the event, admit a family of four to the carnival field. Without one it will cost £1 per person to enter the field, so buying a programme can save you money.

The proceeds of the programmes help fund the carnival and once costs have been met, donations are made to local groups and charities.

The Carnival will start with a procession from the Lake Grounds at mid-day. While the procession is going through the High Street and for a time afterwards the roads on the route are closed and street marshals will be diverting the traffic but please keep to the pavements at all times.

ntries are now being taken for this year’s Raft Race, which will be taking place on Sunday, September 21 as part of the 10th Marlens Festival.

The festival, which starts on Saturday, September 20, is organised by nonprofit making organisation Marlens, the local community group devoted to the restoration and renovation of Clevedon’s seafront.

Visitors of all ages can take part in activities over the weekend, like scuba diving, raft races, zorbing, sailing and canoeing, as well as enjoying entertainment and stalls on Salthouse Fields.

It will be a bigger festival than last year too as Marlens are joining forces with The Curzon and the Community Bookshop to add some cultural activities around the

town.

The raft race, which takes place on Marine Lake, is lots of fun and you can start building your raft today, making it as complicated or simple as you like.

Setting up starts at 12.30pm for the races to begin at 1pm and there are trophies and cash prizes for the winners.

Clevedon radio presenter helps station win award

radio presenter from Clevedon has helped a local hospital radio win another award at the prestigious National Hospital Radio Awards.

Sunshine Hospital Radio volunteer and Clevedon resident Laura Tremelling, along with Marcus Tripp, helped the station scoop Nick Chaffey, Laura Tremelling and a silver award in the Best Jo Newey from Sunshine Radio Speech Package category for a programme about the Weston Helicopter Museum.

They put together the programme for the station, which runs in Weston General Hospital, and were delighted with the result.

The National Hospital Radio Awards is an annual celebration of the excellent standards found in hospital radio stations across the country, and with more than 200 individual member stations the entries were subjected to a rigorous judging process by a national panel of industry experts and NHS staff.

Brass 4 Youth concert raises more than ÂŁ1,000 A concert featuring the Lions Brass 4 Youth Orchestra at Nailsea School raised ÂŁ1,100 for local charities.

Organised by Nailsea and Backwell Rotary Club, the event also featured a number of soloists from the school.

Rotarian Chris Perry praised the outstanding performance of the young musicians playing in front of an audience of more than 200 people.

Formed in 2008 by band manager Debbie Underwood and musical director Dave Hollister, the Lions Brass 4 Youth is a local brass band for young musicians up to the age of 18 years and now includes a training band and starter band.

The starter band takes complete

beginners with the aim to progress into the training band and when musicians reach a required standard they are invited to join the Youth Band.

It is the only youth brass band in the county that provides the opportunity for young musicians to have fun whilst improving and performing.

They play a wide range of music from traditional brass band to pop and film themes at a variety of concerts and performances, which include open practices at Clevedon bandstand, an

outdoor concert in Salcombe, evening concerts as far afield as Devon and Cornwall and Lions South West and National conventions.

he Clifton College Holiday Club and Activity Course programme runs from Monday, July 7–Tuesday, September 2 for children and young people aged 3–16 years. The club operates every school holiday and caters for all abilities and interest groups.

Barn, Great Western Road, Clevedon on Saturday June 7.

Over 120 buyers attend these events and they are a great way to sell unwanted items and purchase good quality pre-loved items for a fraction of the retail price.

More than 20 tables will be selling quality items at affordable prices.

Organiser Tracey Lee said: “I have two young boys and by attending these sales I can afford to treat them to some new toys as well as stock up on clothes and baby equipment.

The event will run from 10-11.30am and remember to arrive early to get the best bargains. Entry is £1 per adult and children enter for free. A donation from the event will be made to Macmillan Cancer Support.

The Dig For Victory Show

T

ickets are now on sale for the Dig For Victory Show, a fabulous 1940s family festival which will take place across the weekend of Saturday, July 5-Sunday, July 6 at the North Somerset Showground, Wraxall.

Recently announced is a Spitfire fly past from the battle of Britain Memorial Flight, whilst on the ground you can get up close and personal to another icon of WW2 – a Sherman Tank.

Listen to a host of high profile speakers and entertainers, including BBC historian James Holland and author Colonel Stuart Tootal. For the music lovers, there is a line up to be proud of including Sticky Toffee Jazz, Ricky Hunter, The Lunettes, Jayne Darling and DJUXB. For those with stamina you can Lindyhop and Swing Dance late into the night on the Saturday at The Victory Dance for only £10 a ticket.

Activities for children include the handling of museum artefacts, traditional games and a children’s trail – a ration of sweets is waiting for anyone who completes it.

The show is proud of its links with the local community and event organiser James Shopland, from Clevedon, said: “Residents of The Hawthorns Retirement home, one of our sponsors, have been sharing some of their wartime stories with the children in our local schools and these oral histories

have been recorded for the public to listen to at the show.

“We want people to have a fantastic weekend filled with fun but also we hope they will learn and take time to reflect on the sacrifices that were made during WW2 by the generations that went before us.”

D-Day fundraising event

World Cup cheer at Baptist church

To mark this, a celebration of words and music, reflecting the seven centuries, is planned for Sunday, June 22 at 11am in the church.

The new Bishop of Bath and Wells, the Rt. Rev’d Peter Hancock, will preach and lunch will follow at 12.30pm.

Old Farmhouse gets award for delicious carvery T

he Old Farmhouse Pub in Nailsea is celebrating after being awarded the Best Carvery in North Somerset award.

The pub, on Trendlewood Way, were awarded a certificate from the The University of the Third Age, a self help organisation which encourages and enables older people no longer in full time paid employment to help each other to share their knowledge, skills, interests and experience via monthly general meetings, coffee mornings, Sunday lunches, and special interest groups covering history, art, and more.

Landlord and landlady, Monty and Marianne, were delighted, considering they hadn’t even realised the organisation had been in to sample the delicious carvery.

Monty said: “It came out of the blue and we’re absolutely delighted with the award as it reflects well not just on The Old Farmhouse but also our

other pub, The White Hart on Wrington Road in Congresbury, as the carvery is mirrored there.

“There were five categories to take into consideration for the award and we came out on top in every single one Manageress Kat, Landlady of them.”

Marianne and Chef Radick The pub is steeped in history and is a 17th century former farmhouse, which is now a Grade II listed building.

Prior to this it was known as East End Farm, which was brought in auction on 12th April 1945, and used as a dairy farm until it was sold to a building company in 1984, who then

sold the farm onto Hall & Woodhouse.

There is a newly refurbished outside area, including a play area, and the old barn can be hired out as a function room. There is also a great quiz every Tuesday night from 8pm.

Heath & eauty New campaign urges residents to become dementia friends

N

orth Somerset Council is supporting the national campaign to create dementia friends to help people in their community living with the condition.

The campaign, launched by Public Health England and the Alzheimer’s Society, is encouraging people to become a dementia friend by watching an interactive video online to increase their understanding.

The campaign aims to create one million dementia friends by next year with major businesses so far committing to train 300,000 dementia

friends.

More than 1,600 people are currently living with dementia in North Somerset, many of whom live well in the community with the help of friends and neighbours.

North Somerset Council has already trained over 70 staff to be dementia friends and aims to train at least 300 by the end of the year. The council is also encouraging residents to take up the invitation to become a dementia friend.

Becky Pollard, director of Public Health for North Somerset,

commented on the scale of the challenge: “One in three people aged over 65 will develop dementia at some point, so building awareness of the challenges people with dementia face and how they can be supported to live well is key to becoming a dementia friendly society.”

First aid at work course

A

three-day first aid at work course organised by North Somerset Council takes place at The Campus, Weston from Monday, June 23-Wednesday, June 25 for anyone needing to become a qualified first aider in the workplace.

The course will run from 9.30am-4.30pm each day and

it is essential that all three days are attended to pass the course.

ith the gardening season now well underway make sure you don’t suffer any gardening related injuries and low back pain.

There are some helpful tips when gardening to minimise the risk of injury.

Warm up – Start with some gentle movement before moving on to the bigger tasks. This might include a brisk walk, shoulder rolls and stretching. Lying on your back and squeezing the knees in towards the chest is a great way to stretch the low back.

Vary your tasks - With our unpredictable weather it is easy to want to get your gardening done in one go when the opportunity arises,

but prolonged repetitive tasks such as digging causes specific joints and muscles to become over worked.

Try alternating tasks, for example weeding for 20 minutes, then cutting the grass for 20 minutes, then having a bit of a walk and a stretch. A little and often is better than all at once.

Heavy lifting - If you need to life something heavy, bend the knees and the hips deeply and keep the object close in to your body before straightening. Handling heavy objects away from the body, such as unloading the boot of your car gives you far less control and may lead to strains in the lower back. Likewise twisting with heavy objects can be very damaging for the lower back.

This month he talks us through exercise variants Exercise selections may be predetermined by your sport or endeavour; it can equally be determined by mindset and knowledge. In past articles, you’ll note that I always suggest ancillary lifts alongside, or as an alternative to, more generic lifts.

Increasing your available repertoire of movements can prove useful

in adding variety to your training, they’re also an invaluable aid in the circumstance of niggle or injury; allowing the ability to achieve sufficient stimulus without making a matter worse.

As an example, we’ll use one of the most-respected lifts: the Barbell Squat. I’m not for one moment suggesting that you do not perform a barbell squat; it should be a staple of your workout regime. What I will suggest is that sometimes a variant may be preferential.

Okay, so here are some examples with the Barbell Squat... trainer issue: an alternate exercise.

Tight Achilles Tendon: Hack Squats (machine or smith machine). Shoulder restriction: Front Squat or Safety Squat Bar. Tight Patellar Tendon: Hack Squats to parallel. Hip shift: Wider-Stance Squat (& consciously push feet out against the floor). Tight Hamstrings: Squat to parallel only.

Lower back stiffness: Leg Blaster Squats. Lower back pain/ strain: Hip

 

Exercise variations can be found with every major movement. Personally, I find variations more appropriate than pain relief or using an external support (e.g. weightlifting belt, tape, wraps).

Whilst these variants do not address fixing a complaint, they can help avoid aggravating an existing issue. In some circumstances, you may know the root cause; in others, you may not.

Find the cause of the problem and look to resolve it; in the meantime, try not to make a matter worse.

Garden lovers in North Somerset are in for a rare treat in June when the finest gardens in Clevedon and Portishead will be open to the public.

rganised by Clevedon Pride, the Open Gardens weekend in Clevedon is on Saturday, June 21-Sunday, June 22 will give anyone and everyone the opportunity to explore the secrets of hidden and private gardens not usually open to the public.

One thousand motorists sign up for new scheme

ore than one thousand people have already signed up to take part in a new road safety scheme being run by Avon and Somerset Police.

The Road Smart scheme offers free driving awareness sessions to all drivers in the Avon and Somerset force area.

The initiative, which has been specially created for Avon and Somerset Police, started in April and sessions will be held at locations across the force area over the next 12 months.

Supt Ian Smith said: “The sessions are open to motorists of any age but we

are particularly keen to encourage young drivers aged between 17 and 24 to sign up since around a third of all serious collisions in our area involve this age group.

Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said: “To hear that over one thousand motorists have taken the time to sign up to the road safety scheme is really promising.

“It speaks volumes that drivers of all ages are taking personal responsibility to improve their road safety awareness.”
