Editor’s note

T

he recent annual swimathon sums up the Portishead community spirit for me, not only did more than 500 swimmers of all ages join forces to raise thousands of pounds for local charities, but businesses supported the cost of putting on the event.

The leisure centre staff went out of their way to make sure the day ran smoothly and more importantly, friends and family swamped the poolside to cheer everyone on. Portishead is known for its strength of community spirit and this epitomised it. Well done everyone, a fantastic day.

Of course Portishead has lots more community events coming up as we go in to the summer months. Make sure you let us know about any events you are organising. The deadline for our June magazine is May 5.

Carnival fast approaching

P

ortishead carnival is fast approaching, so if you haven’t entered your float, cycle, van or walking entry in to the

procession yet, please hurry!

The carnival is an event for the whole town to enjoy no matter what your age.

A procession will leave the Lake Grounds at mid-day on June 14 and make its way down the Cabstand and through the High Street to the carnival field. Crowds line the street to see the wonderful creations, listen to the marching bands and throw their loose change in to the collectors’ buckets. At the carnival field (show field opposite Gordano School) you will find live music, commercial, community and charity stalls and stands, various activities, fun fair rides and plenty of refreshment, including a beer tent.

Come rain or shine the event is great fun.

Programmes priced £2.50 will admit a family of four or five in to the carnival field, without a programme it will cost £1 per person. The programmes will be sold door to door by volunteers and will be on sale in

many of the local shops any day now.

Once all the expenses of carnival have been met, proceeds from the day will be awarded to local charities and good causes.

Procession categories Help make the street procession yet another Portishead carnival parade to remember.

Carnival royals named

P

ortishead’s 2014 carnival queen and duchess have been crowned, completing the royal family who will lead this year’s carnival.

After fighting off stiff competition in a series of interviews before a panel of judges, trainee dance teacher Georgia Hulls aged 17 was named queen and 14-year-old Gordano School pupil Bethany

Davies was crowned duchess.

Both girls are avid carnival fans and are said to be delighted to take on the roles.

They will be joined in the procession with the younger royals: carnival princess, 11-year-old Imogen Timbrell and her attendants, 10-year-old Libby Easterbrook and 12-year-old Phoebe Billing.

The flower princess is seven-year-old Blade Maltby with attendants Amelia Davies, eight and Freya Laws, seven.

he carnival is run purely by volunteers with committee members Wendy Watkins and Jemma Cooper co-ordinating and organising everything. More volunteers are needed, whether it is to sell programmes, marshal the procession or pick up litter after the event, there is always plenty to do.

t was like Christmas all over again when Portishead stationers Morgan Westley handed out a number of cheques to local community groups.

The High Street shop is well known for its commitment to the community and was last year awarded the John Daws Cup, by Portishead in Bloom, in recognition of this.

Community News Record number of swimmers take part in Portishead Swimathon

A

record number of more than 550 swimmers, making up a total of 91 teams, took part in this year’s Portishead Swimathon at the Parish Wharf Leisure Centre.

The annual event, now in its 18th year, was organised by the Rotary Club of Portishead in collaboration with the management of Parish Wharf Leisure Centre.

Swimming in teams of six, representing local schools and a variety of organisations, the swimmers swam in relay for 35 minutes, raising funds for charity through sponsorship and all were noisily supported and encouraged by their friends and families at the poolside.

One team swam 143 lengths which was one length short of the previous record of 144 and 6,727 lengths of the pool were swum in total during the event.

The principal charities to benefit this year are Children’s Hospice Southwest (CHSW), The Great Western Air Ambulance and local schools and groups. The total amount raised will not be known until all the sponsorship money has been collected.

Rotarian President David Oyns opened proceedings by starting the first session and popular local BBC radio and TV personality Jemma Cooper then took over the starting hooter for a while, with the last swimmers going into the water at 7.30pm.

Rotarian Mollie Young said: “The generosity and community spirit shown by businesses and residents of Portishead and surrounding areas continues to be astonishing.

“All the costs incurred in promoting and staging this event were met by donations from local businesses, enabling all the money raised by the swimmers to go directly to the selected charities and local projects.

Members of the Rotary Club are very grateful to everyone who has taken part in organising and supporting the event.”

Preparations for next year’s Swimathon, which will take place on Saturday, April 25, will begin soon.

Recently they were back at Tickenham Village Hall with a production of The Princess and the Pauper, with the excellent help and support from Dave Sims of Tickenham Drama Group. The girls put on an impressive show with multiple quick costume changes and lots of laughs, all in the right places as well!

New jigsaw by local artist

A

High Street shop window has been dedicated to the work of a Portishead artist.

Bryan Evans saw Gibsons, the famous jigsaw makers, turn a poster he had designed and won a competition with, into a jigsaw in 2013. Now another of Bryan’s works of art, this time of Temple Meads Station, has been released as a jigsaw which is on sale in Morgan Westley at 28-30 High Street. Christian Aid Week 2014

I

n this year when we have been hearing so much about the start of the First World War, Christian Aid has chosen to emphasise the work they do with people whose lives are destroyed by war. Their slogan this year is ‘WAR tears lives apart: LOVE can help piece them back together again.’ Christian Aid works with partner organisations in a vast number of areas to help those affected, regardless of faith.

During Christian Aid Week, thousands of collectors visit millions of homes and collect donations which amount to around £12,000,000.

Portishead people have given

generously and even in these straitened times, the town’s contribution has increased year on year, showing that they are truly a caring community. Local volunteers will be putting a Christian Aid envelope through your door very soon.

International Awards for Robert John

R

obert John had a brilliant time last month at the Blackpool International Hairdressing Championships which is held each year at the town’s Winter Gardens.

The hairdressing group, with salons in Portishead and Clevedon, always sends a strong team to compete in both ladies and gents hairdressing at junior and senior

levels and the hard work that was put in by everyone in the months leading up to the 2014 competition, paid dividends.

Lucy Kew, trainer and manager of the Portishead salon, said: “I was extremely proud of everyone in the team - we had a fantastic couple of days which resulted in us bringing home seven golds, three silver and two bronze awards and no-one in the team finished outside the top five. This was one of our best years ever.”

Senior stylist Ben Price returned home with three golds for Senior Bridal, Uptrend and Photographic.

Lucy Routledge, a first year trainee at the Portishead salon won two golds in the Junior Bridal and Night at the Proms categories.

Courtney Coles, another first year trainee, but at the Clevedon salon, won gold in the Junior Ladies Colour and Blow-dry and a bronze in the Junior Day Style.

It’s Official – St Nicholas’ Church is now consecrated!

t Nicholas’ Church in Redcliffe Bay, was consecrated by the Rt Rev Peter Maurice, Bishop of Taunton, in a ceremony before a packed congregation.

finishing their offerings with a rousing rendition of ‘Anchors Aweigh’ in honour of the church’s origin as the chapel of the Portishead Nautical School. Then, in a ceremony with ancient roots, the Bishop rapped on the church door with his crozier, asking for admittance. Having gained admittance, he marked the floor with the symbol denoting beginning and ending. A procession of the clergy, choir and congregation then filed into the church for the service during which the Bishop preached a sermon focussed on new beginnings for St Nicholas’ as a light reaching out to the whole town, a place where everyone is welcomed and loved.

Whilst St Nicholas has functioned as a parish church since its purchase

by Portishead Church of England when the Nautical School closed, it had never been formally consecrated.

However, it had been dedicated for use of Christian worship when it was opened in 1912. Consecration of a building is a step

further, guaranteeing its future as a place of worship for evermore and providing a permanent legal standing.

The special ceremony, held at the end of March, also marked a new working relationship between Portishead Church of England and Portishead United Reformed Church.

In addition to sharing St Nicholas’ Church for their Sunday worship, the two congregations will be exploring other ways of working together. Towards this later, in the summer they will be launching the Lighthouse Café, a new community initiative that will be supporting more vulnerable groups within the town.

Portishead branch manager Nick Todd said: “We have agreed to run this promotion until the end of 2015 and expect to raise up to £3,000 for the school.”

This year the 1940s festival of ‘all things vintage’ will take place on July 5 and 6 at the North Somerset Showground in Wraxall. The two-day, familyfriendly event brings together fashion, food, dance, music and vehicle memorabilia. Organiser James Shopland explains: “The Dig for Victory Show is designed to bring history alive and generations together, provoking a real sense of nostalgia and pride through a wealth of demonstrations and vintage entertainment.”

There will also be an opportunity to camp on site so that families can make the most of the entertainment over the two days.

n May 2 Alex Prince, an osteopath at Walnut Grove Clinic, is taking on a 4321challenge with three team mates.

Triathlon legend, Chrissie Wellington MBE (four times world Ironman champion), Marcus Mumford, Matt Edwards and Alex, all accomplished endurance athletes, will be taking on their own self made 4321challenge.

The team will be running up Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis (the classic three peaks challenge of Wales, England and Scotland) but will also be cycling the distance in between. This is a total of 27 miles of mountain running and a massive 450 miles of cycling.

And in case you didn’t think that is bonkers enough, they plan to do it non-stop!

They are doing all this to raise money for two great charities, the Rainbow Trust, which gives support to families of terminally ill children and Jole Rider, a local charity that runs educational and bicycle projects for African children.

The team would, of course be very grateful for any donations.

ortishead Yacht and Sailing Club is again inviting the local community to experience dinghy sailing at its annual Try Sail Event to be held on Saturday May 10 starting at 2pm through to 5pm. All are welcome. Just turn up with some soft shoes/trainers, warm clothes (a waterproof top maybe useful too) and all other equipment will be provided. Members will take you sailing. There is no charge to participate, just turn up at the club at the bottom of Belton Road, Portishead.

Masonic Hall Demolished

A

t the time of reading, contractors Andrew Scott, will have demolished the former Masonic Hall in Pier Road in readiness for Portishead’s new lifeboat station. At the time of writing, demolition is in full swing.

Around 3000 bricks will be recycled on site to form a new wall access to the Royal beach.

The coping stones on the sea wall where the launch ramp will be built have also been removed in preparation for this part of the project.

Gavin Evans, project manager said: “Having now set up site we are aware of our surroundings and the impact it will have on our neighbours this year and so are intent on causing as little impact as possible on them during the work. We now look forward to the challenge of constructing an excellent facility for the RNLI here at Portishead.”

The RNLI are building the new lifeboat station ahead of a formal adoption of The Portishead Lifeboat Trust when the station is built, according to the wishes of the charity’s trustees, who agreed that an adoption would take place once the RNLI had provided a new home for the lifeboat and its crew, that was fit for purpose.

Good News for Portishead Marina

ortishead marina has been made a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Active Marina.

The ‘Active’ programme is designed to help boat owners get more out of life with their boat, encouraging and supporting increased berth holder activity and enhancing a programme of training, cruising and social opportunities.

There will be an active drive to encourage new people to boating and it is hoped that new activities like canoeing and fishing will also be promoted at Portishead marina.

Compass Sea School, which already runs workshops and training programmes at the marina, has launched, in addition to its regular programme of courses, a wide variety of workshops to encourage more women and younger family members to get actively involved.

This years’ Festival on the Quay, which will take place at the marina close to the Hall and Woodhouse pub/restaurant over July 5 and 6, promises to be the biggest to date. Raising money for the Portishead Lifeboat and the new RNLI station, in addition to the stalls and live entertainment, the event will see marina owners Portishead Quays Marina and Compass Sea School run a variety of training demonstrations, displays and rescues.

A new boutique comes to Portishead

A

new boutique has opened in the centre of Portishead High Street.

Flagship Boutique has moved in to the former Top Hat and Tails store at 52 High Street.

The business is a dream come true for Ivan Hargrave who has lived in Portishead for the past five years.

He said: “I have always wanted to run my own business. I have lived near the coast most of my life, hence the nautical theme running through the shop. My wife Stephanie and I love Portishead where we live with our two-year-old daughter and I am extremely pleased to now be running a business here too.”

Ivan has worked in retail for more than 12 years, including 10 years working as the manager of John Anthony in Bristol.

He added: “I always thought there was a gap in the market for a smart/casual ladies wear shop in Portishead and finally convinced myself to do something about it last summer. After a lot of hard work and research and the help of my wife and both sets of parents, I cannot believe that at last my dream has turned into reality.”

Shanicatti Shakes – a new experience in the High Street

isters Sharon and Nicola have opened Shanicatti Shakes in the former Scrumptious Café premises at the Old Bakehouse in Portishead High Srreet.

The former St Katherine’s School pupils previously ran a coffee shop in Bristol and also a cake company making exquisite homemade cakes for Westonbirt Arboretum.

All the cakes sold in the new High Street café are homemade and all the food is freshly prepared on the premises, with the sandwiches being made with the famous Hobbs House Bread, home of the famous Baker Brothers.

Sharon said: “We wanted to bring something new to the High Street, including something for the younger generation, which is why we have introduced a range of 16 different flavoured milkshakes,

which are made from delicious chocolate bars, fresh milk and ice-cream. We also have a range of ice-creams and sundaes, all made with whippy ice-cream and everything is available to eat and drink in or take away.”

Nicola added: “Our café is bright with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and we have the added bonus of an outside courtyard, set back away from the road which is ideal for families and especially those with small children.”

hildren starting school in Portishead in September will all be able to attend a school in the town. In previous years a shortage of reception school places has in some cases resulted in four-year-olds having to be bussed out to attend schools in nearby towns and villages.

The high demand for reception class places has been met as a result of an extension to St Peter’s Primary School which will increase its intake from two reception classes to three, giving it 90 places.

In addition Trinity Primary School in The Village Quarter and Portishead Primary School will both need to increase their reception intake by offering an extra reception class. How the extra children will be accommodated in the schools remains to be seen but the authorities are confident the education and wellbeing of pupils will not suffer as a result of the extra numbers.

t Peter’s School has been given a new lick of paint thanks to the work of Sainsbury’s and their local contractors, Kier. The Sainsbury’s team donated their time and materials to the Portishead school last month, when they spent the day painting the old school building.

Michelle Box, Sainsbury’s Project Manager said: “Everyone had great fun getting hands on and my thanks go to all of those involved. I hope this goes some way to make a difference for St Peter’s and I am looking forward to events and actvities we have planned to support other local schools.”

My son pulled an old pair out of the cupboard and I looked down to see his big toe hanging over the edge.

Normally he is the first to tell me when his shoes are too small, but because he couldn’t feel the end of the sandal (like you would a shoe), he thought they were fine. That is until he stubbed his toe!

When selecting children’s sandals it is important to get them correctly fitted and as with any other shoe, you need to make sure you allow for growing room. However, you need to be aware that some children don’t “see” the end of the sandal. The brain can think the end of the toes is the end of the sandal, which often causes children to trip.

It is also very important to ensure the sandals fit correctly around the ankle. If the sandal slips the child will be gripping with their toes as they walk. A small child may still need a filled in ankle to give them the necessary support.

his Chiropractic Awareness Week the British Chiropractic Association (BCA) is warning parents that their teenagers could be at risk from suffering from back or neck pain due to sedentary lifestyles and the excessive use of technology.

The research revealed that almost three

quarters (68%) of 11 to 16-year-olds spend up to four hours a day on a laptop, tablet or computer and a staggering 73% spend up to six hours on the devices. More than a third (38%) of parents said their child spends up to six hours a day on their mobile phone.

In clinics, chiropractors are also noticing a rise in the number of young people presenting with neck and back problems due to their lifestyle choices.

Today, the BCA is encouraging parents to limit the time their children spend using technology and instead, encourage more active pastimes.

Commenting on the findings, chiropractor Lisa Reed from Harbourside Chiropractic Centre, said: “We are seeing more and more people under the age of sixteen with back and neck pain and technology is quite often the cause. Young people are becoming increasingly sedentary which is damaging their posture. There is the tendency to sit in a hunched position when working on computers and laptops, putting a lot of strain on the neck.

“Learning how to sit properly and keeping active will help to keep young people healthy and pain free. It’s important that parents seek help for their children from an expert as soon as any pain starts - if

conditions are left untreated it could lead to chronic back and neck problems in later life.”

Walk With The Lions

Portishead Open Gardens weekend takes place over June 7 and 8 from 10.30am-5pm daily.

The event is organised by Portishead in Bloom and it is one of the voluntary organisation’s main fundraising events of the year.

The money raised goes to the valuable work carried out by the group which helps to keep Portishead looking so good all year round.

Around 15 gardens will be open to the public which offers a great day out. Some serve refreshments, some provide live music, while others have stalls and raffles. Local produce will also be available.

What’s On Gordano Valley Arts Festival Folk Group

Gordano Valley Arts Festival 2014 starts on Wednesday, May 7, with a performance from the Freshly Ground Folk Group at St Mary’s Church, Portbury. The group is a finely blended ensemble of 12 outstanding folk singers from the South West, brought together by the group’s leader, Issy Emeney, to sing English traditional and original songs in glorious harmony. Once sedated, patients tend to fall asleep as they are so relaxed (unlike general anaesthetic where you are fully unconscious). Conscious sedation has a profound amnesic effect. When patients come around/recover from the sedation, most do not remember anything about the procedure; from the point that the drug is given usually to the point that they wake up at home. Exercise of the Month: Working the Rotator Cuff Muscles Every month top personal trainer Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym Professor, provides an exercise of the month for readers to try.

L

ast month, I emphasised the importance of working on weak links to avoid injury and improve overall strength.

The “weak link” mentioned in the Flat Bench Press was the rotator cuff (comprising 4 muscles - teres minor, infraspinatus, supraspinatus, and

subscapularis).

As the “rotator” name suggests, the individual muscles of the rotator cuff help with rotating the shoulder: teres minor and infraspinatus to rotate your arm and shoulder away from your body, supraspinatus helps you raise your arm out to the side, subscapularis to rotate your arm and shoulder towards your body: however, their most important role is when they work together; here’s why: compared to our other ball and socket joints, such as the hip joint, our shoulder joint has a fairly

shallow socket.

This affords our upper arm greater rangeof-movement in all directions, but more vulnerable to coming out of alignment – which is where a lot of shoulder problems can begin.

When working together, the combined pull of the rotator cuff muscles helps to keep our ball and socket joint correctly aligned (firmly in its place).

So, how do we strengthen the rotator cuff muscles? Simple, we exercise them with good-form and a sensible progressive load in their isolated planes-of-movement: External Rotation (far left), Lateral Raises (right), Internal Rotation (middle).

These exercises can be performed with a hand-weight (dumbbells, bottle of water), bands, or cables.

R

egular deworming of your cat is extremely important, even if flea treatment is up to date. Although the likelihood of a worm problem may seem less likely in an indoor cat, this never rules it out and it is unwise to ignore the risks completely.

If your cat goes outdoors for a daily walk on a harness, this will be enough to expose her to the problem. Worm eggs are everywhere, and can be easily transmitted by a few steps outdoors (soil, puddles, pathways), human contact (shoes, fingernails, dirty hands) and various other creatures (especially fleas). There are several ‘families’ of worms that affect dogs and cats, many of which can also infect humans (especially children). Some of the symptoms of a worm infestation can be very dangerous, with symptoms varying from diarrhoea to internal bleeding to permanent blindness. The dewormer should be one that is veterinary approved (not all pet-shop products are!) and one which covers both tapeworms and roundworms (if in doubt, don’t take the risk, just buy them from your vet). Certain flea spot-on products may also contain roundworm treatment, in which case a solitary tapewormer is all that’s needed.

ith spring bulbs fading and the herbaceous border growing in leaps and bounds, it is now clear that summer is fast approaching and we should be getting nice and busy in the garden.

The colourful bedding season has now got going so it is time to think about adding vibrancy and colour to your pots and hanging baskets.

It’s also time to get back into the lawn mowing regime, as the lawn will be loving the warmer temperatures this month brings.

There are so many treatments now available to help perfect that bowling green lawn: moss/ weed killers, fertilizers/feeds, greeners and soil improvers. Be sure to get good advice on what you need and don’t be shy of getting stuck into a bit of raking, aerating and top dressing. It will pay dividends in the summer. Although there are now some organic/bacterial treatments which eat the moss away and save on the raking!

Growing your own.

May is a funny month, when winter crops and stored veg have all been eaten but very few of this year’s crops are ready. There’s still plenty you can do now for tasty veg to harvest this year.

Plant the following veg outdoors: artichokes, brussel sprouts, celery, courgettes, pumpkins, squash,

sweetcorn and tomatoes (just watch the cold a little on these).

Sow the following veg outdoors: beetroot, carrots, cauliflowers, chicory, cucumbers, French beans, kohlrabi, pumpkins, runner beans, salads, spring onions, sprouting broccoli, squash, swedes and sweetcorn.

Cover the emerging shoots of potatoes with soil. Doing this helps to prevent light reaching the tubers. If they’re exposed to light, they turn green because of an increase in chlorophyll.

Make the most of the space in your veg garden by sowing quick-growing crops, such as salads, between longer term residents, such as brassicas, while they’re establishing.

Three years on and still an Allotment Virgin, which is unlikely to ever change. You learn a bit and think you’ve cracked it then it all goes belly up. Take the carrots and onions for example, lovely in 2011 and 2012 and then last year as miserable as sin. So fingers crossed for 2014.

All the seeds are started. Carrots, onions, parsnips, garlic went straight into the ground and all the rest are in mini cold frames. Most will be done again in a few weeks time so planting is staggered and it’s not all ready at the same time (something we have learnt). The 12

seed beds have been rotated so the different groups of veg (Alliums, Roots, Brassicas, Legumes) move to a new bed on a four year rotation plan which helps soil fertility.

We’re three years on but there’s still a buzz when you see the first shoots emerging. The lottie feels like you’re way out in the countryside; all healthy and uplifting. Home and Garden Why Landlords Should Choose Fully Managed

By Paul Kingston of Clifton’s Estate Agents his week I have seen three landlords seeking our help. All three had previously self managed their properties, probably to save money but all three had ended up wishing they hadn’t bothered.

I always advise allowing us to take full responsibility but respect the decision of anyone who decides to self manage, even if I don’t agree with it.

The three examples this week include a very respectable, young female professional tenant with parents acting as guarantors. She had often paid her rent late and had just left the tenancy without paying the final month’s rent, assuming her deposit would cover it. Unfortunately the flat was left in a far from pristine condition and a lengthy dispute is now likely to recover losses for the repairs and refurbishment required.

As managing agents, Cliftons could have prevented this and at the same time acted as a protective shield from any confrontation between landlord and tenant. If managed by us, a professional inventory company would have carried out the tenant check in and out, with any disputes handled by the Deposit Protection Scheme. We would also have visited the property on a regular basis to pick up and deal with any problems. In this case, as with many others, the cost of Clifton’s managing

the property would have worked out much lower than the losses now faced by the landlord in his current situation.

The other two landlords were pleased with their methods of self managing until the rent started getting later and later and then stopped completely.

One of the landlords, being a busy chap, didn’t even notice for a month or two. If the property had been managed by us we would have noticed the day the payment was due and immediately acted upon it.

The third landlord had let his property to a friend and so could see no benefit in using a managing agent. All I am going to say about this one is that the friendship no longer exists. Putting an agent in charge would have avoided any personal feelings coming in to the arrangement. Had the landlord wanted to help a friend he could easily have offered a reduced rent but still keep everything on a professional level using a managing agent.

With these examples in mind I would stress to all those looking to go it alone as a landlord, the cost of not using an agent can be far higher than using one. If you’d like to know just how reasonable and how cost effective our service is, we would love to hear from you.

What happens to penalties when you cancel a tax return?

Q:

: HMRC issued a tax return for me but my circumstances have changed so I didn’t think it was required. I successfully asked for it to be cancelled, but what happens to the accompanying penalties?

A:

: In the past, HMRC was required to raise a penalty for a late tax return- although the taxpayer was able to appeal if they felt they had grounds.

However, from April 2012 taxpayers have been able to ask HMRC to cancel a return where they felt it was not required. Where HMRC agree, any penalties linked to the return are also cancelled.

This change only applies to tax returns for 2012/13 and onwards but can apply to individual, partnership or trust returns.
