Congratulations to the organisers of Portishead raft race, another successful event enjoyed by both local residents and visitors to the town.

As we go to press, Portishead and District Horticultural Society is preparing for its annual Flower Show and Country Fair, so make sure you go along.

Whether you are young or old there is always plenty going on to keep you busy in Portishead and August is no exception.

Life saving defibrillator

Police Cadets A

P

ortishead Town Council has taken receipt of a brand new community defibrillator.

The new life saving equipment is housed in its own cabinet on the front of the Folk Hall at 95 High Street. Members of the public will be directed to the cabinet by the ambulance service in the event of an emergency.

Portishead Town Council took the decision to get a defibrillator following an emergency at the Folk Hall, which highlighted the need. The defibrillator has been donated by South Western Ambulance Services and the town council has paid for the specialist cabinet to hold it.

von and Somerset Police are looking for young people to join a new volunteer police cadet unit starting up in Portishead.

The uniformed cadets will meet once a week during term time at Gordano School to learn about all aspects of policing and volunteer to help their communities.

The closing date for applications for the new unit is Monday August 11. Application forms can be downloaded from www.avonandsomerset. police.uk and are also available from members of the neighbourhood police team.

To sign up teenagers should be aged between 14 and 17, live in Portishead or Pill or go to Gordano or St Katherine’s schools.

After initial training the cadets will get involved in helping their communities, delivering crime prevention messages and supporting police at local events.

Some of the older cadets also volunteer with neighbourhood teams, accompanying PCSOs on foot patrols, helping to carry out house-to-house enquiries and joining Community Speed Watch volunteers, monitoring speeds on local roads.

As well as getting hands-on making things better in their communities, cadets get the chance to take part in fun team-building exercises, trips and activities.

The Volunteer Police Cadet scheme will be run by police officers, police staff and volunteers, in their spare time, with costs met through sponsorship.

New councillors for Portishead

T

wo new councillors were elected in the Portishead Town Council byelection last month.

Martyn Cruse has been elected to represent Portishead South and North Weston ward, alongside existing councillor Alan McMurray. Lesley Cottrell was elected to represent West ward alongside Cllr Ros Cruse.

The vacancies occurred because former councillors Graham Walker and Icy Patel lost their seats after failing to attend sufficient consecutive town council meetings.

The town council is made up of 14 men and women, who represent seven different wards. You can now visit the town council website www.portishead.gov.uk and click on the individual wards to see which roads are contained within each ward.

Town councillors provide their time free of charge; their work is unpaid and strictly voluntary.

Portishead Town Council, which is based at the Folk Hall, should not be confused with North Somerset Council, the local authority responsible for spending your council tax on things like highways, refuse collections,

education and housing. The town council however, should represent the views of Portishead residents at district level.

Town council meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month when a public participation section invites local residents to speak on issues of concern.

The next full town council meeting is at the Folk Hall on August 13 at 7.30pm.

Swimming Gala P ortishead Open Air Pool hosted its third inter-schools swimming gala in which High Down Junior School were crowned overall champions.

Inspired by the 2012 Olympics, this popular swimming event has become a regular event with pupils from five local schools competing for awards.

High Down stormed ahead with 88 points after gaining16 golds, 13 silvers and 14 bronze medals. St Joseph’s came a close second with 80 points and Trinity came third.

nother Portishead family fun day has been hailed a huge success after thousands of people gathered at the Lake Grounds for the annual raft race and waterside picnic.

24 teams entered in to the fun packed race which saw homemade vessels race across the lake in their attempt to win one of the much sought after trophies.

Bouncy castles, giant slides, charity stalls and a hog roast added to the fun which also included a main stage for live music, featuring Gordano School student, singer and guitarist Ben Hutcheson and rock covers band Avalanche.

With Jemma Cooper having a previous engagement, this year’s compere was Jon Bonner.

Jon lives with his family in Portishead and is a professional actor after training many years ago at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. He has performed in the West End as well as in regional theatres including the Bristol Old Vic and Tobacco Factory theatres. He is currently performing in a production of Calamity Jane for the Watermill Theatre, Newbury with Jodie Prenger playing the lead role. The production tours the UK in September

The actor gave an excellent running commentary throughout the day, keeping the rafters motivated and the spectators fully informed.

A raft race spokesman said: “Everyone had a splashing time and sponsorship is pouring in so I think we can safely call this year’s raft race a resounding success.”

The event is expected to raise in the region of £10,000, £2k of which has been raised

Charity Splash

81 swimmers took part in the Longest Swim event held at Portishead Open Air Pool in support of the Raj K Soni Legacy Fund. Raj was a talented sportsman killed in a tragic cycling accident in 2012 aged just 18. As Raj’s two great passions were music and sport, his parents set up a memorial fund to benefit under 21’s looking for financial help in those fields.

Money raised from the swim will go to local youth sport and music projects. The pool put in its own team, and 10% of the funds raised by them will go back to support the open air pool.

By the end of the day the swimmers taking part in the challenge had completed 6639 lengths which equates to 138 miles or 6.59 channel crossings!

At the time of printing pledged funds stood at over £11,000 but this looked set to

increase by a few more thousand pounds before the fund-raising efforts were completed.

A barbecue after the swim was attended by around 300 people who enjoyed some brilliant entertainment provided by young students from The Rock Project.

Baby giraffe steals the limelight

J

ust a few weeks ago, Noah’s Ark welcomed a baby giraffe who certainly knows how to arrive on cue!

Genny the giraffe is now proud mum to a healthy calf who well and truly stole the limelight during the daily Giraffe Talk for visitors at the park. At the precise moment giraffe keeper Emma Green was explaining to an inquisitive visitor that “we expect the baby anytime in the next two days” Genny’s waters broke and two little hoofs appeared!

Keepers quickly led Genny safely into her own straw-filled ‘private suite’ in the peace of the Giraffe House away from visitors and carefully monitored her throughout the birth.

Mum Genny is 13 ½-years-old and this is her second calf with proud father, 10-yearold Gerald. The two are still very much ‘loved up’ and delighted to be second-time parents.

Supportive dad, Gerald, was attentive staying nearby throughout the birth, along with their two-year-old calf George.

Emma is delighted everything went so smoothly and said: The next few weeks will be a time of exciting exploration for the baby who will be eating solids from birth but will also be reliant on mum’s milk for the first six to 12 months of her life.

St Katherine’s Sports Awards Evening

O

ne of Portishead’s favourite sports personalities, Bobby Gould, was guest speaker at a local school’s Annual Sports Award Ceremony. Students, parents, staff and special guests gathered at St Katherine’s School in Ham Green to celebrate the year’s sporting successes.

Bob (pictured) , the former Wales and Bristol Rovers manager who previously played for Arsenal, West Bromwich Albion and Bristol City, to name but a few, chatted to pupils and staff before and after the ceremony.

Special Recognition award was Jamie Barrow, who has been part of the British Snow Cross Team since the age of 15 and recently became Britain’s fastest snowboarder clocking an incredible 94.2mph!

Students were nominated for a variety of awards by the PE Faculty staff based on their performance throughout the year, these included categories for Team of the Year, Outstanding Commitment and Outstanding Leadership as well as individual and team achievements in rugby, football, netball, hockey and cricket.

Just like the BBC awards there was also a Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards. Joe Conway picked up the Sportsman of the Year and Amber Parslow Sportswoman of the Year.

Portishead Town Band goes for

P

ortishead Town Band has decided to develop into a non contesting 10-piece brass band.

Band member Nigel Woods said: “We are really looking forward to starting on the 10-piece music and would welcome new players in all sections. We are particularly keen to attract a horn player to support our current line up. We can supply the instrument if someone out there can supply the puff!!!”

Band History Portishead Town Band formally started in 1968, although a number of the founder members including current bass trombonist Eric John, had been practicing in a Portishead Power Station office for

some time before that. In 1968 they became a part of the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) Sports and Social Club, practicing regularly at the clubhouse which is now known as Clarence House.

The initial conductor was Bill Blaker, whose son John is still a very active member of the band as both a cornet player and key committee member. A number of other family members have been involved with the band over the years, as have a number of other local families including Derrick, Pennell, Bold, Reed and Lench within the ranks.

The band first started contesting in 1972 at the Colston Hall. It was in the 4th Section until October 2000 when following an appearance at the Royal Albert Hall it was promoted to the 3rd section. The band was next promoted in October 2005 when it went onto compete in the 2nd section until March 2008 which saw a further promotion

to the 1st section, finally reaching the championship section in March 2011.

Between 1991 and 2004 the band developed and hosted a very successful annual music festival and was a member of the International Federation of Music festivals.

The band has played all over the country and has also visited Portishead twin town Den Dungen on four occasions. It has featured on TV and supported Belinda Evans at Bath Rugby Club in front of 10,000 people and many thousands more on Sky TV. The band was initially known as the Electricity Club Band as a consequence of their connection to CEGB, changing to Clarence House Band before taking on their current name Portishead Town Band.

They practice on Mondays nights, splitting between Gordano School and Clarence House.

The band is keen to attract players in all sections, but in particular cornets, horns and basses.

A Café with a Difference? Future Bathrooms C of Portishead afés are abound in Portishead, in shops, churches, clubs – but not in Redcliffe Bay it seems. But that lack will be remedied with the opening of the Lighthouse Café at St Nicholas’ Church in Nore Road on August 24. The café is the joint project of the two congregations which hold services in the building, Portishead Church of England and Portishead United Reformed Church.

Following the refurbishment of the Nore Road church, inside and out, the café is being launched with a view to opening on Thursday afternoons from 2-4pm.

Revd Andy Bryant, team rector of Portishead, said: “We are particularly keen to reach out to those who feel isolated or alone in the community.

We are delighted to be working on this project in conjunction with Crossroad Cares to see how carers can be better supported.

The Lighthouse café will also be supporting the initiative to make Portishead a dementia friendly town. We very much hope the Café will become a space in which those who use it can help shape it to meet their own needs and provide other activities and events in response to local need.”

Proceeds from the Lighthouse Café will go towards local good causes, with the café supporting a different local good cause each month.

Pupils pose the questions for MP P ortishead Primary School pupils had a special visitor before the end of term.

Dr Liam Fox called at the school to speak to members of the school council and have a look at the installation of new outdoor children’s play equipment.

Pupils hosted a question and answer session with questions ranging from “What is your favourite food” to “What is David Cameron like?”

Dr Fox said: “The children behaved impeccably, were well mannered and so confident. We are so fortunate to have such good schools, like Portishead Primary School, around the area.”

The school also had a fundraising day for the lifeboat which saw both teachers and pupils

dressed as pirates for the day.

The visit was set up by chairman of the Friends of the School, Berkeley Harris. Mr Harris won an auctioned prize at the Lifeboat Ball at Cadbury House in November 2012 to have tea with Dr SALON AND MOBILE HAIRDRESSING Fox at the Houses of Parliament.

Community News Local author signs three book deal

H

uw Powell is a children’s author with an overactive and uncompromising imagination.

He grew up in Pill, where he wrote his first stories for friends and family.

His best subjects at school were English literature and art, which he went on to study at University.

Despite a successful banking career Huw continued to write and recently came up with an idea for a children’s book series called Spacejackers, which has just clinched him a three book deal with Bloomsbury publishing, publishers of the Harry Potter books.

Huw now lives in Portishead with his wife and two sons and was very excited to announce the launch of his first book last month in which Jake Cutler is on the run. He’s being chased by space pirates but he doesn’t know why. Saved by the crew of a rusty old spaceship called the Dark Horse, Jake sets off on an adventure through the seven solar systems. But will he discover the truth about his past before the space pirates catch up with him?

Huw’s book was released in UK and Australia on July 3 and will be released in America in January 2015. He is currently touring local schools and organisations to introduce Spacejackers to youngsters.

Portishead Hairdresser scoops Welsh Championship A Portishead hairdresser has been named winner of the Senior Welsh Ladies Hairdressing Championships in Cardiff.

Erin Casson, a senior stylist at Robert John, was placed 1st in the Senior Ladies Hair Up contest and 2nd in the Senior Ladies Hair Down competition. The results added up to Erin winning overall the Senior Welsh Ladies Championship She then entered the Model of the Day category which is judged on the overall presentation of the model and the style that has already been created. The 22-yearold achieved 3rd in this heat.

Other successes in the team were for Lucy Routledge, who was presented with a gold medal in the Junior Hair Down and a Silver in Junior Hair Up categories. This was a fantastic achievement for Lucy, who is only in her first year of her training at Robert John.

Ben Driscoll Price who, along with manager Lucy Kew, are trainers for the team, decided at the last moment to enter the Bridal category, despite not having a bridal dress for his model!! Robert John owners Bob and Jenny Hancock say they are extremely proud of their team. Jenny

said: “For Ben to win 2nd in the event under these circumstances bears testimony to his amazing hairdressing skills.”

Ben also entered Model of the Day and again won silver.

The competition attracted a large field with competitors coming from as far away as Finland to take part.

It’s four in Fuerteventura for Zara

Z

ara Davis is the ISWC Women’s European Speedsailing Champion for a record 4th time, adding this title to her double world speed sailing record at almost 46 knots (53 MPH) on a Windsurfer. Zara who lives in Clevedon and runs Walnut Grove Clinic in Portishead returned triumphant from a hard fought week at the ISWC European Speed sailing Championships in Fuerteventura. The competition consisted of nine rounds, of which Zara won seven confirming her status as quadruple European champion.

Her nearest rival and old adversary from previous record attempts, Lena Erdil from Turkey, challenged Zara hard with the newcomer Anna Shindler from Germany also proving to be a credible challenger, making the title an intense competition. The course for the competition was set out over 250 metres in fairly flat waters, found in the south of the island of Fuerteventura famed for strong winds. The event ran for six days with the competitors racing for over four gruelling hours every day when the winds were suitable at over 23 mph.

Changes at Parish Wharf

s part of North Somerset Council’s review of leisure centres in the district some changes are planned for Parish Wharf Leisure Centre in Portishead. In an attempt to make it more profitable the gym will be expanded and other improvements made.

Unfortunately the indoor bowling rinks will be a casualty of the changes. Figures show these are under used and so will be closed, but bowling enthusiasts disagree and are not happy about it.

he start of the school year and the necessary preparations will be with us before we know it, including that dreaded trip to the shoe shop, the fight over which shoes are appropriate and then (gulp!) having to pay for them!

But please consider the Society of Shoe Fitters (SSF) is extremely concerned at the increased number of children being referred to podiatrists and G.P.’s with foot health issues. “Most of the problems are due to the lack of hands-on fitting and younger children insisting on wearing the latest fashions which may not be suitable for their age.

They have no idea they are actually

storing up long term damage to their feet.” says Laura West, secretary of the SSF. Our children are in their school shoes for a minimum of 40 weeks per year, five days per week, seven hours per day including walking to and from school, playing during breaks and walking to each class if they are in secondary school.

With the quandary of looking after our children’s feet and weighing up the cost of school shoes in mind, Gordano Living visited SoleLution in Portishead High Street, to investigate how much it really does cost.

“On average a child will get through two pairs of shoes during the school year depending on how quick their feet are growing and how heavy they are on shoes.” said Tanya Marriott, owner of SoleLution.

“We stock a wide range of brands including Hush Puppies, Geox, Start-rite and Ricosta and you can expect to pay between £35 and £50 per pair.”

That means it costs you between 35p and 50p per

school day to shoe your child. Worst case £2.50 per week – that is the equivalent of treating yourself to a coffee at the local coffee shop or one drink at the pub each week – just some food for thought!

A steak to remember

t Gordano Media, the team are always keen to get together and visit the venues of our advertisers. We recently spent a fantastic evening at the Rudgleigh Inn at Easton in Gordano.

Landlord John and all his staff were very welcoming and we dined in the inviting and relaxed atmosphere of the restaurant, along with a visit to the lovely outside garden, perfect for a balmy summers evening.

We all decided that steak was the order of the day, so perused the menu to see what John could offer our various tastes and we were not disappointed. The Rudgleigh is most definitely an establishment of steak excellence, with a wide variety, specially selected by breed for their succulence, taste and quality. I selected a 10oz rump cooked rare with chips, peas and a béarnaise sauce. What can I say?….. Wow! It truly was the best steak I had eaten in a very long time. Slicing like butter it was mouth-watering and beautifully presented. I cannot recommend this steak enough. My colleagues however disagreed with me, as they all said their steaks were again the best they had tasted!

Meetings of the Portishead diabetes support group are regularly held in the waiting area at Portishead Medical Group, Victoria Square, Portishead.

Typically a talk with questions normally lasts about an hour. Meetings start at 7.30 p.m. (doors open from 7 pm). All those with diabetes, their partners, friends and carers are welcome to attend.

There are no membership fees, although a raffle is held at each meeting, the income from which helps to cover costs.

Puxton Park is to stage a fun filled cheese and cider festival as it officially opens the doors of a new onsite £1 million cheese dairy. The popular South West attraction began the construction phase of the new dairy back in the spring, as part of a new joint venture with award-winning Trethowan’s Dairy. It will produce Gorwydd Caerphilly Cheese, a traditional handmade cheese matured for two months to develop its depth of flavour using milk from Puxton’s pedigree Holstein cows.

Visitors will get the first taste at a cheese and cider festival taking place over the weekend of August 30 and 31, with entertainment from the Mangled Wurzels on August 31.

The addition of cheese production sits nicely alongside Puxton’s ice cream parlour making ice cream from their Jersey cows.

Pitch a Tent For Charity Returns Due to Popular Demand

uxton Park adventure park is to stage a second fundraising charity camping night to raise further funds for the Harvey Hext Appeal.

The family attraction in Hewish, near Weston-super-Mare, allowed families to pitch their tents over the May Bank Holiday weekend, which raised £250 for the appeal.

After receiving such positive response, Puxton will hold another camping night, on August 24, with donations once again going to the charity.

Harvey Hext Appeal aims to raise funds for six-year-old Harvey, which will allow him to access potentially lifesaving treatment not available on the NHS. The charity camping event will see performances from Punch and Judy, as well as a disco on the evening of Sunday August 24, which remains open to the public until 8.30pm.

Campers can arrive at the park from 4pm on August 24 and activities will include full use of the play barn and the outside play equipment.

The event will allow campers second day access to the park on the Bank Holiday Monday, August 25.

Pitch a tent costs £15 per tent for up to four people and additional fee of £3 per person (under 3s go free) with fees payable in advance at the Puxton main reception.

A time to remember…

n August 4, one hundred years since the start of the First World War, vigils and services across the country will mark the occasion. Here in Portishead, all are invited to gather at 8pm at the town war memorial in St Peter’s Church to remember those from Portishead who gave their lives in this conflict. The vigil will begin in light and end in darkness remembering Edward Grey’s remark at the outbreak of the war: “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our life-time.”

The hour-long vigil is deliberately timed to conclude before the main national vigil which will be broadcast from Westminster Abbey at 11pm - the actual time war was declared.

his walk will give you some stunning views of the Bristol Channel, the two bridges and the hills of Wales. You will also get up close to the thousands of cars stored at Royal Portbury Docks. It can be very muddy in places, so please wear appropriate footwear.

The walk begins at the seaward end of the marina. Join the coastal path which begins after the Marina Control Centre adjacent to the lock. Walk away from the Marina with the sea on your left.

At the end of the houses the tarmac path becomes an unsurfaced track. Continue past the electricity substation and follow the right hand bend in the path. Cross the small bridge and turn immediately left. Do not go through the gate into the Nature Reserve.

After approximately 40 metres turn left again and walk down the path alongside the rhyne towards the sea. You will pass a bird hide on your right towards the end of this path.

Climb the slight incline, turn right and take a minute to

enjoy the spectacular views of Portishead to your left. Walk along the raised bank towards Royal Portbury Docks.

Keep walking until the path veers slightly inland. It also gets quite muddy at this point. You will soon join the road next to a large car storage area. Turn right and walk towards the large double gates.

Turn left at the gates onto a narrow, muddy path which follows the edge of the car park.

You will eventually reach a gate which has a small footbridge to its left. Cross this bridge and turn right into a narrow path which eventually opens up into a wider track.

Just keep walking along this track which skirts the car storage compounds. There are a couple of gates and stiles before you eventually reach a group of farm buildings followed by a few houses. The track emerges onto Sheepway.

Turn right and walk along Sheepway (be careful – most of the road has no footpath).

When you reach the railway bridge go through the gate to the right of the bridge and after a short walk take the right hand track, at the end of which there is a small car park.

Turn left into Wharf Lane and simply keep going until you arrive back where you started.

00 blossoming musicians shed a whole new light on the rock music genre during The Rock Project’s annual concert.

Princes Hall in Clevedon roared with undeniable new-found talent, as youngsters professionally performed instruments as though they were a fifth limb. Despite the varying abilities, it was clear to see the enthusiastic members of the Nailsea, Clevedon and Portishead rock schools were determined to raise the roof, and they did it faultlessly while proud parents’ eyes shimmered with tears of pride.

An astounded audience of almost 300 applauded after the young performers

concluded their concert with a classic Queen number, A Crazy Little Thing Called Love.

Members of the crowd were bursting with compliments including: “We were really impressed by the standard of the performance this evening and had a great time!” and “The students all did fantastically well and a concert like this must have boosted their confidence a lot.”

From vocalists to guitarists, each song was a success, as the juniors executed songs such as Pharrell Williams’ Happy and the seniors took it to a new level with The Killers’ Mr Brightside.

Anyone between the ages of seven and 18 is invited to join The Rock Project. Sessions

run in Nailsea, Clevedon, Portishead and now also at Ashton School.

Into the Image

I

f you are interested in improving your photography skills the launch of a new business in Portishead may be just what you are looking for. Into the Image Photography, which launches this month, aims to provide training and help on all aspects of photography.

Ken Abbott, owner of Into the Image, says: “Since the advent of the digital camera, photography has become quite complicated to the extent that even choosing the right camera can be a challenge. Therefore Into the Image aims to clear the confusion and make it easier for people take better pictures with the right equipment.”

Ken adds: “The one single thing that improved my photography was studying the great photographers and understanding how they created their

iconic images, so this seemed to be the perfect place to start.”

As well as providing training Ken will also be specializing in event photography and is already working with both Portishead Carnival and the Bath Operatic & Dramatic Society.

Portishead gymnast makes the 2014 Commonwealth Games

ortishead gymnast Ruby Harrold and coach Liz Kinkaid of The Academy of Gymnastics in Portishead’s Harbour Road are currently representing England in the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh.

Liz Kincaid, who was selected as Team England coach for the third consecutive Commonwealth Games, said: “It is a privilege to be selected as Team England Women’s Gymnastics coach, I only hope that we can match or even better our previous years’ performance at the games.”

The Commonwealth Games is a fantastic opportunity to see British athletes compete against the best athletes from around the world. Joining 18-year-old Ruby, who has just finished her first year of A’levels in Gordano School’s sixth form, is 2014 European Bar Champion and 2008 Olympian Beckie Downie, 2012 Olympian Hannah Whelan, GB 2014 European floor and vault finalist Claudia Fragapane and GB International Kelly Simm.

ethan Popel, who plays golf at Long Ashton Golf Club was selected for the England Nations cup side earlier in the summer, playing at Douglas Golf Club in Cork where she tied eighth individually and the team finished second.

Bethan was then picked for the England Nations Cup Team and The St Rule Trophy at St Andrews Golf Club, where she finished 14th individually and the team won the Nations Cup. Next the 18-year-old tackled County Week at Yeovil Golf Club before heading off to the British Amateur Championship at Royal St Georges Club.

olunteers Rachel and Warren Nash help organise Sunday afternoon tea parties for senior citizens in Portishead.

Sundays can be one of the loneliest days for people living alone and so Contact the Elderly works to help combat that.

Rachel and Warren meet with a group of older Portishead residents once a month for a chat and a laugh at Costa Coffee in the High Street. They also have a number of volunteer hosts who invite members of the group round for a cuppa and a slice of cake a couple of times a year.

Thousands invested in energy project

I

n June, Low Carbon Gordano (LCG), a community enterprise, invited members of the community to invest in the

building of a 1.8 Megawatt solar array on the edge of the Avonmouth industrial complex.

In order to help pay for the 8,000 panels LCG launched a share issue with the aim of raising £2.2 million. It is a scheme which is expected to attract not only ethical investors who want their money spent on local, low carbon projects but anyone who wants a reasonable rate of return on their investment in a difficult economic climate.

Ten days into their share offer, after launch events in Portishead, Hallen and Pill, LCG had passed the first £100,000 milestone with an average investment of around £4000.

The share offer closes on August 15 and investors are urged to move quickly.

A spokesman for LCG said: “If anyone is planning to invest in our share offer I would like to encourage them to do so sooner

rather than later. This helps to increase our early investment total and builds confidence and momentum in the share offer.”

Shares are £10 each with a minimum of purchase is £500 and the maximum being £100,000 in shares.

Consequences of late tax payments Q:I am newly self-employed and have been rather unorganised this year. I just managed to get my 2012/13 tax return filed online on 31st January 2014, but I didn’t have enough cash put aside to settle my tax bill.

What are the implications of late payment?

A:

You will have interest to pay on anything you owe until HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) receives your payment.

Furthermore, after a delay of 30 days, late payment penalties at 5% of the tax you owe will begin to apply. Additional late payment penalties will be added if the delay exceeds six months.

Please note, if you also registered for self assessment late (i.e. after 5th October 2013), you may

This will be 5% of any tax outstanding on 31st January 2014.
